This paper presents the results of laboratory measurements of relative permeabilities to oil and gas on small core samples of reservoir rock by five methods, and describes the influences of such factors as boundary effect, hysteresis, and rate upon these measurements. The five methods used were the "Penn State," the "single core dynamic," the "gas drive," the "stationary liquid," and the "Hassler" techniques. In those methods in which the results are subject to error hecause of the boundary effect, the error may be minimized hy the use of high rates of flow. In order to avoid complexities introduced by hysteresis, it is necessary to approach each saturation unidirectionally. Observed deviations of relative permeabilities with rate can be explained as a manifestation of the boundary effect, and disappear as the boundary effect vanishes. The results indicate that all five methods yield essentially the same relative permeabilities to gas. Of the four methods applicable to the determination of relative permeability to oil, three, the Penn State, single core dynamic, and gas drive, gave relative permeabilities to oil which were in close agreement. The Hassler method gave relative permeabilities to oil which were consistently lower than the results obtained by the other methods. INTRODUCTION The relationship between the effective permeability of a reservoir rock to each of the fluids flowing through it and the corresponding fluid saturation is an important characteristic of the reservoir rock. Knowledge of this characteristic is and gas reservoirs and of the ultimate recovery to be expected extremely important in the prediction of the behavior of oil under various operating conditions. These effective permeabilities are usually expressed as the "relative permeability" to a fluid phase, defined as the ratio of the effective permeability to the permeability of the rock to a single phase at 100 per cent saturation. Relative permeability-saturation relations are not the same for all kinds of reservoir rock, but may vary from formation to formation, and within the different portions of a heterogeneous formation. In studying the performance of a specific reservoir, it is necessary, then, that the relative permeability characteristics of the individual portions of the reservoir be measured. These measurements may be made in the laboratory on small core samples from the reservoir. Various techniques have been proposed for the measurement in the laboratory of relative permeability-saturation relations. In varying degree, difficulties attend the use of all of the methods which have been proposed. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the factors which influence the measurement of relative permeability, the difficulties encountered in several methods, and to present comparative results obtained by the use of various techniques. Introduction PETROLEUM seepages are known in Alaska at four localities, all on Pacific seaboard. These, named from east to west, are Yakataga, Katalla on Controller Bay, Iniskin Bay on Cook Inlet, and Cold Bay on the Alaska Peninsula. Besides these, a petroleum residue has been found near Smith Bay on the north Arctic coast of the Territory. At Katalla, Cold Bay, and Iniskin Bay there has been some drilling for oil, and in the first field several productive wells have been opened up. Alaskan petroleum so far as its composition is known, is a refining oil, with paraffin base and low sulphur content. Most of what is known of the geology of Alaska oil fields is based on the investigations of Dr. George C. Martin, of the United States Geological Survey. A. G. Maddren, of the same service, has recently made a reconnaissance of the Yakataga oil field. The data to be here presented are chiefly taken from the following publications: G. C. The techniques of testing the physical properties of green pellets produced in a batch balling test are described. It has been found that these physical properties, i.e. drop resistance, wet compressive strength, and plastic deformation under load, are generally related to the moisture content of the wet balls. A "criterion" method of analyzing data from a series of batch tests is discussed. This method facilitates the comparison of results of various test series. A time-sharing computer program, which correlates the test data from a batch series, generates the "criterion" values for subsequent comparison and analysis, and produces X, Y plots of the various moisture-strength relationships, is presented. Examples of computer output and use of the "criterion" evaluation method are given.

IT has long been known that there are wide variations in the thermo-electric potential of pyrite. In the last few years a study of this variation and other properties of pyrite was carried out at the University of Toronto by F. G. Smith on specimens of pyrite from many loyalities. As a result of these studies the pyrite geothermometer was developed by Professor Smith. The calibration of the pyrite geothermometer is based on the assumption that "crystals of any one electronically conducting mineral species deposited at a high temperature have a more positive thermoelectric potential than crystals deposited at a low temperature, and the thermo-electric potential varies continuously between any given limits of the temperature of deposition." The cause of the variation was postulated to be crystal discontinuities, such as lineage boundaries. As yet this postulated relationship has not been established as fact. On theoretical grounds it is indicated that the thermo-electric potential of pyrite or any other partial conductor is dependent upon a number of factors as well as the temperature of formation. For this and other reasons there is ground for doubt as to the validity of the relationship postulated above. To date a large number of readings have been made with the pyrite geothermometer which have been recorded in terms of the calibration of the instrument in degrees centigrade. So far most of the pyrite tested by this technique has been in association with gold ore. The values for the temperature of formation obtained in these tests appear to be reasonable and, in relation to geological problems, to vary in the right sense. Determinations on some specimens not in association with gold ore have given readings that appear to be much too high, taking into account the probable maximum temperature of the host rock. To sum up, although many determinations made with the pyrite geothermometer appear to give reasonable values for the temperature of formation of the pyrite, there are at the same time other readings which seem anomalous. On the basis of an examination of available results of work with the pyrite geothermometer, two problems must be considered: 1—the validity of the calibration of the pyrite geothermometer; and 2— the nature of the distribution of the thermo-electric potentials of pyrite in relation to the specific problems that have been examined. In this paper the academic problem relating to the validity of the calibration of the pyrite geothermometer will not be discussed. Instead, the variations of thermo-electric potential of pyrite in association with gold veins will be discussed with regard to specific examinations. The first of these two examinations deals with the distribution of thermo-electric potentials of pyrite in association with a gold vein and was carried out in the McIntyre Porcupine Mine, Schumacher, Ont., in the summer of 1949 as part of a study with this technique. The second problem deals with variations of thermo-electric potential of pyrite in gold ore specimens from all over the world. The specimens used in this study were part of the private collection of Frank Ebbutt, geologist for Howe Sound Exploration Co. Results of Detailed and Reconnaissance Studies In discussion of the results of determinations made in these two studies the values of thermo-electric potential in millivolts will be used. It will be noted that in some of the diagrams the determinations are recorded in terms of pyrite geothermometer temperatures. Fig. 1 is a calibration chart relating pyrite geothermometer temperatures and thermoelectric potentials. A full discussion of the technique is given in the original paper by F. G. Smith.' It is difficult to understand why they did it. It was a demonstration of total commitment which sent chills of mixed admiration and fear up and down your spine. The scene was the bodega in Section A, 2660 Level on the 12 to 8 shift. The jefe was patiently waiting for the tea leaves to settle in a large metal cup. His attention was distracted by the appearance of a miner who had a problem. The long and short of it was that the miner believed the branch raise he was driving was unsafe and he wanted the jefe to come and see it. After lunch the jefe went around. First cautiously shining his light to peer up the raise from outside the chute, he then scrambled inside and swiftly climbed the cribs to the face. No question, it was hairy; about 4 crib sets were needed to catch up to the face. The unsupported raise was slabbing. It didn't take the jefe more than a few seconds to ascertain this situation and to slide back down. As he came out of the chute, a small avalanche arrived on his heels and provided a sort of exclamation point to his order; "cerrado!" In other words, shut 'er down.

The Mamou Field, located in Evangeline Parish, La., is an elongated anticlinal structure on the downthrown side of a major east-west fault with oil and gas production from the upper part of the Wilcox formation. Two main producing horizons occur at an approximate depth of 11,500 ft and have been designated the Morein sand and the Deshotels sand. The upper sand (Morein) had an original bottom-hole pressure of 6,788 psig, which is some 1,500 psi above the normal pressure for that depth. Oil production with high gas/oil ratios and fluid analyses giving high shrinkage factors prompted a study of the reservoir in its early stages. The results indicated a closed reservoir producing under solution gas drive with low expected ultimate oil recovery. The early study of the Wilcox formation and its contained hydrocarbons resulted in the presentation of the data to the Department of Conservation of the State of Louisiana. with suggestions for field rules and a request for permission to inject extraneous water into the Morein sand. The water injection plans eventually led to complete unitization of working and royalty interests, to the construction of a gasoline plant, and to a central tank battery installation for the field. Deshotels sand wells were reworked to the Morein sand, and the water injection system was installed and ready for continuous operation in the early part of 1949. The injection of water was started in time to arrest the bottom-hole pressure decline at or near the bubble-point pressure. This injection was calculated to increase the ultimate recovery and to conserve natural resources. Pressure maintenance, the extraction of LPG products, and the sale of residue gas (early 1950) represent an attempt to produce an oil field with utmost efficiency. INTRODUCTION The two principal Wilcox oil horizons in the Mamou Field are the Morein sand and the Deshotels sand, occurring at 11,500 ft and 11,700 ft subsea, respectively. Minor oil production has been encountered in Morein stringer sands. (Fig. 1.) This paper deals only with the Morein sand, which is blanket over the Mamou Field. It is, however, segmented by the northwest-southeast "E" fault as shown in Fig. 2. The west segment is the area involved in the water injection pressure maintenance program. To date the east segment has operated largely under the influence of a strong water drive. The paper presents (1) a brief history of field development, (2) a resumé of reservoir conditions which led to the decision to inject extraneous salt water into the principal producing horizon, and (3) a summary of reservoir analysis and performance. Quantitative appraisal of the chances of finding various tonnages and grades of ore clarifies any exploratory development proposal. Ways are discussed of appraising chances in conformance with probability principles, and graphs are suggested to show tonnages, grades and the corresponding judged expectancies. Introduction When exploratory development of a mineral deposit is contemplated, three interrelated questions normally must be answered before a sound decision can be reached. How much will the program cost? How much will the anticipated ore add to the immediate value of the mine? And what is the chance of developing this ore? To justify development, the deposit should present a favorable disparity between the three factors, cost, chance and return. If, for example, there is a 50-50 chance of success, the ore that is sought should have an immediate worth (after deducting all subsequent charges that it must bear) of more than twice the cost of the development. Likewise, if the chance of finding the ore is but one in five, that ore should enhance the immediate value of the mine by more than five times the cost of developing it- With sound economic and operating assumptions, the cost of exploratory development and a present value of anticipated ore may be estimated within reasonable limits. Less general attention has been given to appraising ore chances in comparable terms. The exploratory experience of the mining industry is broad enough that knowledge, vision and judgment may be combined to yield more tangible evaluations of Ore expectancy than are now customary' A way of making such appraisals is suggested herein. The mathematics of probabilities cannot be applied directly to the search for ore. By coupling applicable principles of probability, however, with pertinent experience gained in mineral exploration, an estimate often can be made of the chance of finding a certain tonnage and grade of Ore in a specific location. Such estimated, or judged, expectancies for the several blocks of ground in a deposit may be combined in a simple chart to show the relationship of the various exploratory possibilities and the potential magnitude of the deposit' An engineer or geologist may find that the quantitative thinking required for an appraisal of this type is an aid in clarifying and coordinating his views and recommendations. This paper describes the development of u computer program to calculate changes that occur in the length of tubular goods due to temperature and pressure changes during stimulation operations. Due to the numerous variables involved and the uncertainty of all static and dynamic conditions that could exist, it becomes a staggering task for individuals charged with completions to perform the necessary mathematical calculations. The computer program permits advance calculations for several sets of conditions. INTRODUCTION In the Delaware basin of West Texas alone, 50 wells were contracted or drilled to 15,000 ft or deeper in 1965. Deep well activity is continuing in this and other areas on an expanding scale. Many of these deep wells require extensive stimulation for successful commercial production, and during these operations, pressures and temperatures are encountered that have a pronounced effect on the length of tubular goods. This length change during a large-volume, high-pressure stimulation treatment utilizing fluids considerably cooler than bottom-hole temperature can be of such a magnitude that permanent damage to casing and tubing will result unless mechanical design, pressures and fluid temperatures are evaluated and controlled. These pressure and temperature effects can be calculated. However, the process lends itself well to computer solutions because of the mathematical nature of the problem and the calculating hours involved in arriving at an answer. The engineering-hour demand becomes more severe as tapered strings are involved. On initial treatments on a given well, surface pressure and injection rate conditions are unknown, and offset well conditions have not proven to be a reliable method for making predictions. For these reasons, it has become rather standard procedure for operators to compensate for these uncertainties by placing unnecessary pressure and fluid temperature restrictions on stimulation design. On a number of occasions treating fluids have been preheated to as much as 160F as a means of compensating for thermal contmction resulting from pumping cool fluids. The maintenance of packer seals has been treated by Lubinski, Althouse and Logan',' and the problem of therma1 effects on pipe has been explored by Ramey." These works were expanded and the results made applicable to everyday oilfield terminology before submitting them to computer programming. The pressure and temperature effects on tubing movement previously mentioned occur simultaneously as fluid moves through the pipe. The pressure changes, for purposes of explanation, are categorized here as to the various effects these pressures have on a tubing string. These divisions are (1) the piston-like results of forces acting on horizontal surfaces exposed to pressure, (2) swelling or ballooning of the tubing along its entire length due to the forces of pressure acting against the tubing walls, (3) the elongation of tubing due to frictional drag and (4) corkscrewing of the pipe due to internal pressure. Thermal changes are also of great importance, as their results may be more significant than any of the pressure effects. Steel is an excellent conductor of heat and the earth is a relatively poor conductor. It has been calculated that pipe temperatures at depths of more than 20,000 ft approach within as little as 25" the temperfature of the surface fluid after pumping for 2 hours, or a drop in temperature in some treatments of more than 220F. The equations presented in this paper were developed for computer programming and simplicity of input information; therefore, numerical constants such as Young's modulus for steel (28 X 10\ si), the coefficient of thermal expansion of steel (6.9 X 10."IF) and Poisson's ratio for steel (0.3) are included with unit conversion factors. The moment of inertia of tubing cross-sectional area with respect to its diameter was changed to a constant times (D' — d') where D is outer diameter and d is inner diameter. Units in the equations are length in feet, diameter in inches, density in pounds per gallon, pressure in psi, rate in barrels per minute and time in hours. PISTON-LIKE REACTIONS A change in tubing internal dimensions and the exposure of other horizontal surfaces to different pressures on the inside and outside of the tubing result in a reaction much like a piston under pressure. Such is the case when the internal diameter changes in a combination string of pipe, when seals of a slick joint assembly are subject to pressure and in the end effects of a tubing string. (Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) FEW authors of treatises and papers on engineering subjects have . given adequate attention to topographic maps.. The statement applies especially to mining engineering in all branches. Even those who have discussed such maps have treated the subject only in a general way. Therefore it is proposed to outline in this paper a few of the uncommon, yet important relationships which topographic maps and their by-product, structure-contour maps, have to modern methods of mining investigation and development when the facts depicted on such maps are properly interpreted. Topography, as suggested by the etymology of the word, menus a detailed description of particular places. Written descriptions have been found less effective than the pictorial representations, therefore attempts have been made in various ways to picture the surface features of places. Lines and shading have been used, hachures drawn, and, finally, the contour topographic map. To a large extent this style of snap is the result of the demands of engineers. It is designed to meet their needs far more than those of the man untrained in engineering. In fact, the average man obtains a better idea of the topography of an area from the hachure system than from contour maps. . Since the maps. have been made chiefly for the use of the engineer, they ought to meet his demands on the one hand, and, on the other, should be used by him to the fullest extent. Such maps, when properly made, accurately portray a portion of the earth's surface and should present the topography better than a personal examination of the area without a map could present it, because the person making such examination views only a limited portion of the surface at a time, and estimates distances only roughly with his eye. Let the engineer consider carefully the fact that in many instances the topographic map is superior to a personal examination of the surface features of a property because the map is based on careful instrumental measurements, whereas the eye gives imperfect data because it can be used merely for the estimation and

Arthur Launcelot Collins was born at Truro in Cornmall, England, July 8, 1868. His father, J. H. Collins, is well kuown as an engineer, and his books have been widely read in this country: Arthur was the third son. Three of his brothers are engaged, as is his father, in the profession of mining engineering. His education, gained partly at St. Austell, partly at Falmouth, and partly at Nuttall's Collegiate School in Truro, England, was supervised by his father, who was then Lecturer on the Mining Sciences to the Miners' Association of Cornwall and Devon. In 1881, J. H. Collins went to Rio Tinto, in Spain, as chief chemist and metallurgist, and it was there that Arthur began his practical work in the laboratory and continued his studies in chenlistry and mineralogy. To the latter science he was deeply attached; and he never lost an opportunity of adding to his cabinet of minerals, of which he was an ardent collector. In 1883, he became assayer and general assistant to Mr. Nicol, Manager of the Peña del Hierro copper-mines, ncar Rio Tinto. HARD as it is at any time to provide more than three million tons of coal each year for power plants, the task really gets rugged in the wintertime when the fuel freezes solid in the cars. At the Marysville plant of the Detroit Edison Co. the problem of unloading cars of frozen coal was severe because there was an unloader over only one of the two tracks in the coal unloading house. Moving downward by their own weight, with no driving force to aid them, the spuds of this old unloader were unable to break through the crust on a frozen coal car. 20,000 Lb Force To meet this problem, a new mechanical car unloader was installed over No. 2 track and placed in service in December 1947. It is a Kenney type unloader built by Heyl & Patterson, Inc. of Pittsburgh, Pa., a modification of equipment originally designed to unload iron ore cars. The major advantage of this unloader is the force with which it can drive the sharp spade on the end of its ram down through the pockets of a frozen coal car. The unloader consists of the following major units: 1. A traveling bridge structure. 2. A traveling trolley. 3. A retractable and oscillating ram. 4. The operators cab and controls. The bridge is provided with safety hooks to prevent its being lifted from the rails by the upwards push of the ram. The bridge will travel 190 fpm and has sufficient traction on its four wheels to move three loaded 70 ton cars. The trolley runs on tracks supported by the bridge girders and also has upper tracks to control the push from the ram. Two of the single-flange trolley wheels are driven by a one and a quarter hp dc motors equipped with magnetic brakes. The ram is raised and lowered by a 20 hp dc motor equipped with a magnetic brake. A full stroke of a little over 14 ft is given the ram through its rack and pinion drive and the spade can be pushed down into a loaded car with a force of about 20,000 lb. A 15 hp dc motor with a magnetic brake is applied to this drive and is able to swing the ram 45º either side of the vertical. The usual procedure in emptying a coal car is first to drive the sharp spade down through the coal until the pocket is opened and the coal starts to run out the hopper. When all the hoppers are open, the sweeping action of the ram and spade is used to move the remainder of the coal in the car over to the open hoppers. The travel of the trolley permits cleaning the sides of a coal car with the edges of the spade, using the sweeping motion of the ram. It is still necessary to clean out the corners of the car by hand. Final Clean-Out This unloader was a new development and there were improvements to be made before it was completely satisfactory, such as reduction in speed and conversion to ac drive motors. However, it helped at Marysville and unloaded many frozen cars that would have taken a lot of heating to thaw out enough for the old unloader to handle. The mechanical coal unloader described above was a considerable improvement but still left a job to be done by hand-the final cleaning out of the coal cars. The ram had the ability to open a hole through the hopper cars, but did not meet required unloading speed. SILVER the whitest of all metals, has been used for thousands of years. Students of antiquity agree that silver, gold, copper, and their alloys were the first metals discovered by man and they have all played an important part throughout the advance of civilization. Native silver has been found in different parts of the world in varying form and size, such as clusters of fine wires in rock cavities, thin sheets along cleavage planes in veins of rocks, and pieces of irregular shape that vary in size from extremely small particles to masses weighing many pounds. Nearly pure silver is found in, the native state but the native metal is more likely to contain copper or gold. Some of the natural alloys closely approximate the compositions of synthetic alloys that are used in the arts at the present time. As these native silver alloys usually are malleable and ductile, it is evident that prehistoric man was provided by nature with metals that he could work, with the crude tools at his command, into simple ornaments or other articles. The relative scarcity of silver combined with its resistance to attack under ordinary atmospheric conditions have been important factors in determining the purposes for which man has used it. Its scarcity and indestructible character have made its possession particularly desirable, and from the earliest times its principal use has been as a measure of wealth and a medium of exchange. The comparatively high value of silver in relation to other commodities makes it possible to transport a large amount of wealth in small bulk, and silver has traveled back and forth over all parts of the world. The installation of the Chance flotation system for the preparation of anthracite demonstrated the need for some means by which the specific gravity of the fluid mass in the separating cone could be determined with a fair degree of accuracy. The means used (with the original cones) was a set of wooden balls attached to ropes or chains, each with a different specific gravity. In the Northern Anthracite field, where the cones are generally operated with the specific gravity at 1.65, these gravity balls are provided with a range of 1.6, 1.65, 1.7 and 1.75. The operator of the cone from time to time would place one or more of these balls in the cone and estimate its specific gravity by the action of the balls. The margin of error with this system was very great, because there was the possibility that the test ball might be held in suspension and carried around by material floating beneath the surface of the cone in what is known as "island " formation—a formation resulting from a low sand line in the separating cone. The inaccuracy of this system of determination of specific gravity was indicated also by periodic tests of the final refuse bank, which showed excessive losses of coal to the refuse. Further evidence of the unsatisfactory operation of the cone was the uneven appearance of the market product, which caused spasmodic condemnation. Maintenance of Even Preparation With the critical market condition of today, it is essential that the preparation units operate consistently to maintain an even preparation. If a plant wishes to maintain a 1.65 specific gravity preparation, which means that all material of a specific gravity greater than 1.65 is classed as "reject," if the specific gravity of the fluid mass runs to 1.70, the market product will not be satisfactory; or if the specific gravity of the fluid mass is 1.60, the market product will be entirely satisfactory but the losses at the slate ends will be excessive. In opening the meeting I wish to express my greatest pleasure at being able to greet this joint session of the Mining and Electrical Engineers. As engineering develops, we find that the border lines between the different branches of engineering become more and more indistinct; the several fields overlap so much that they are three or four layers deep in places. It is only an accident that we couldn't have had the Mechanical Engineers also as a formal part of this gathering, because they are quite as much interested in this subject as the Electrical or Mining Engineers.
