Systematic data are presented on the relation of composition of nickel silvers to color, tarnish resistance, hardness and liquidus temperatures, for alloys containing up to 30 per cent nickel and 50 per cent zinc, further modified at certain nickel and zinc contents by 0 to 8 per cent of tin and 0 to 10 per cent of lead. Attention has also been directed, using a still more limited range of alloys, toward a study of tensile properties and such casting properties and characteristics as fluidity, shrinkage and pressure tightness. In some of these, rather broad ranges of composition are dealt with; in others, it has been expedient to focus attention on the Federal Specification 20 per cent nickel silver casting alloy, WWP-541. Introduction The demand for an alloy essentially white in color, which could be cast and worked by simple methods and which possessed strength and corrosion-resisting properties superior to the usual brasses, led to the discovery and early use of cupronickel alloys containing zinc, and sometimes tin, lead and other metals. This type of alloy was generally known as 'German silver until the war, when the term "Nickel Silver" became generally accepted. The element principally responsible for the white color of the alloy and for its strength and corrosion resistance is nickel, which may constitute from 8 to 30 per cent of the alloy. The functions of the other elements will be described later. The manifold uses of nickel silver are largely due to its color, corrosion resistance, ease of casting, fabrication, joining and rather moderate cost. In many instances the alloy is finished by grinding and polishing while in others it may be finished with a silver or nickel plus chromium plate. Electroplates applied to a nickel silver base behave more satisfactorily than those applied to the softer and less resistant alloys, and owing to the white color of the underlying metal the article will retain a pleasing appearance despite local failures of the plating.

THE occurrence of twins in large ferrite crystals, made by a new process, was reported in a recent note.1 This paper describes a typical case of such twinning and suggests, on the basis of the observed facts, why smooth slip-planes are rarely observed in this metal. METHOD OF PREPARATION The material in. which the crystals here dealt with were grown was made from 1/8-in. Armco iron welding rod containing C, 0.04; S, 0.037; P, 0.003; Si, 0.008, and Mn, 0.02 per cent. This rod was cold drawn into wire about 1 mm. dia. A piece of this wire was supported vertically and was locally heated in hydrogen at atmospheric pressure to about 1400° C. by an alternating current (60 cycles per sec.) of about 35 amp., passed through it between a pair of traveling contacts about 8 cm. apart. The rate of travel for the case in hand was 12 cm. per hr. After some 30 cm. of the length of the wire had been heated and cooled in this manner the whole wire was immersed for a few seconds in dilute nitric acid, not restrained by alcohol. Etching was continued until, ass nearly as could be judged by eye, the original smooth cylindrical surface of the wire was no longer capable of specular reflection. MEASUREMENTS The wire in the etched state was next mounted in a goniometer of special form which allowed the measurement of the spherical coordinates of the normals to any plane surfaces left by the etching. These coordinates were most conveniently a polar distance, ?, from one direction of the wire axis, and an azimuth or longitude, [ø], from an arbitrary prime meridian. The region to be described more particularly is shown at a low magnification in Fig. 1, which gives two different views, differently illuminated to show the spatial relationship of a crystal occupying most. of the part shown and of an inclusion, or rather a series of three inclusions suspected of being twins based on the principal crystal.

If a bar of wrought iron or steel is suddenly cooled from a bright red-heat, the contraction which then occurs is considerably greater than the expansion previously caused by heating the bar, so that its final length is considerably less than its initial length. Mr. Thomas Wrightson has investigated this phenomenon,* and has shown that not only does this permanent contraction occur on sudden cooling, but, if the heating and cooling be repeated, say fifty times, a further permanent contraction occurs at each successive cooling. In Mr. Wrightson's opinion, this contraction cannot be explained on mechanical grounds, and he ascribes it to some molecular change caused by sudden cooling; but I think that we need not invoke mysterious molecular changes to explain this phenomenon, which appears to me to be due to very simple and purely mechanical action. Let us consider the cooling as divided into two periods, in the first of which the exterior or skin of the bar becomes almost completely cooled, and hence tends to contract almost to its initial dimensions, while the still hot arid plastic interior contracts but little; in the second period the already cool skin remains nearly constant in temperature, and hence tends to contract but little, while the interior cools from a comparatively high temperature to the ordinary temperature, and hence undergoes great contraction. The excess of the contraction of the skin over that of the interior during the first period tends to make the bar bulge in the middle of its length. This, as well as the decrease of density which occurs, Mr. Wrightson correctly explains. The interior of the bar just sufficed to fill the skin when both were in their initial condition, before being heated at all. At the end of the first period, the volume of the still hot interior is more than the now contracted skin can hold while maintaining its initial shape; and the effect is much the same as when we powerfully blom into a soft India-rubher Lag of the shape of the skin of the bar—it bulges, and tends to approach the spherical shape, in which the ratio of surface to

IF ASKED whether limestone production was a mining problem I would; not hesitate to answer emphatically in the affirmative. The question, "When is a quarry a mine?" is familiar. The immediate mental picture induced by the thought of limestone production is that of an open quarry. All are familiar with the open pit in the iron-producing districts of Minnesota and Michigan and the open cuts of the so-called "porphyry" coppers of the West. If these are mines, they differ little from limestone quarries in general mode of operation; if quarries, why do they need the attention of mining engineers? During 1923, the United States produced in round numbers 70,000,000, tons of ore. The limestone production of the United States for the same period was something over 100,000,000 tons. In tons, it about equals the oil production of the United States. The uses of limestone are legion. A paper read by a prominent engineer of Chicago, at the meeting of the National. Crushed Stone Association held last February in St. Louis says: "There is no industry in the United States today that is more basic in its operation or by itself controls. more industries. There is hardly a chemical operation, hardly a metallurgical operation or building operation that a crushed-stone man does not control if he will jump in and make the full utilization of it." Some of the many uses are for road metal, concrete, railway ballast, building stone, riprap, and rubble, the manufacture of iron and steel, alkalies, calcium carbide, magnesia, carbolic and carbonic acids, asphalt filler, mineral wool, poultry grit, sulfuric acid, phosphates, nitrates, soap, baking powder, the purification of copper and prevention of coal-mine explosions, to say nothing of the quantities used in the making of lime and cement. It has been said that without iron we would revert to the Stone Age; how much iron would we have without limestone? From the point. of view of the mining engineer, using the term in its broad sense to include geologists and metallurgists, the production of limestone is important because of its occurrence, volume, commercial importance, and the problems presented by its recovery and treatment.

Black: Bodies.-In the ordinary conception, a black object is an opaque object that reflects but little of the light that is incident on it. This means naturally that such an object is a good absorber of luminous radiation. The black body; which is so closely connected with high-temperature measurements, represents the limit in blackness of all black objects. It is a body that not only absorbs all visible radiations but also all other radiations in the infra-red and the ultra-violet regions of the spectrum which are incident on it. No substance is known that is completely black; platinum black, one of the nearest if not the nearest representative of the ideal, reflects 1 per cent. or so of ordinary visible radiation. The closest approach to the ideal is a small opening in the wall of a relatively large opaque cavity. Any radiation incident on this black body will be almost completely absorbed if the relative dimensions are properly chosen no matter what the material may be. The great difference between the blackness of such a cavity and of lampblack, for instance, will be apparent to one who makes the simple test. Non-black Bodies.-The field of non-black bodies covers all real bodies. Their characteristics are extremely varied. So far as absorption of radiation-is concerned, these bodies range practically from the almost completely black, platinum-black, and lampblack, which absorb all but a fractional part of 1 per cent. or so of the incident radiation, by an infinite variety of steps to freshly polished silver, which ordinarily absorbs only a few per cent. The exact percentage absorbed depends not only on the nature of the incident radiation, but also on the temperature of the body, the condition of its surface, the angle of incidence, the nature of the surrounding medium, and on certain other less important conditions. As consequences of these varied characteristics, we have not only the differences of color of ordinary objects, but also the changes of color that any one object undergoes on heating or when lighted front various directions. This complexity of the phenomena, in a way, is responsible for the meagerness of knowledge, regarding materials at elevated temperatures. Measurement of High Temperatures.-Excepting in cases where the thermocouple or the gas thermometer are applicable, in which case the temperatures obtained are true temperatures regardless of-the material" studied, high, temperatures are almost always, if not always, determined from measurements of radiation. In fact, determinations of temperature from this latter point of view are often so much more convenient than the thermocouple and especially the gas-thermometer determinations that, in the region where all of these types of measurements may be made, the radiation measurements are often preferred. This is true even though the temperatures usually thus directly determined are not the actual temperatures, a consequence of the sources of the radiation being non-black bodies; in other words, a consequence of being concerned with iron, or glass, or tungsten instead of small openings leading to relatively large-cavities uniformly heated. Coordination of Experimental Results.-In order that data on iron, glass, tungsten, or other non-black bodies obtained in one laboratory, may be, correlated with similar data obtained elsewhere, temperatures must be expressed on a common scale. The true temperature scale is the natural scale for this purpose it is ordinarily the scale to which all other temperatures can be most directly reduced. It has been suggested by a number of people that it would be worth while for some one to attempt to summarize or condense the proceedings of this symposium. This task has fallen to me as organizer and co-chairman. Its difficulty will be appreciated by anyone who attempts to read the whole proceedings. It is therefore with trepidation that I offer the following digest. In recent years there has been a renewal of interest in America on this subject of the cohesive strength of materials, and a growing appreciation of the need for a better theory of cohesion failure. The theories of elastic action and plastic action are well developed, particularly the former. The theory of plastic action is still in the course of development, but it is well along. Plastic action is terminated by cohesion failure and what is needed is a theory that will tell us when to expect the cohesion failure. In the past it has generally been assumed that cohesion failure will occur when a critical value of the maximum tensile stress has been reached. Many experiments have shown that this is not strictly true, and this symposium concerns itself with the failures of this simple hypothesis, and with the efforts that have been made to devise a more satisfactory theory. The most active contributor in recent years to knowledge in this field is Dr. McAdam, and he was asked to open the symposium with a summary or condensation of his papers and views. Undoubtedly it is presumptuous to attempt a still greater condensation, but perhaps it will be useful, because even his contribution to this symposium contains no summary, no concise statement of just what his contribution has been. Dr. McAdam makes two main points The first is that the cohesive strength is not a single valued quantity, but that it is a function of all three principal stresses and hence must be represented diagrammati-cally by a surface in a three-dimensional figure, Dr. McAdam has attempted so to delineate the cohesion limit, basing his

Several investigations in recent years have shown that drilling rates are increased significantly with increased hydraulic horsepower. But, there has been no over-all method of designing jet-bit programs that efficiently uses the surface power. A study of present practices indicates that frequently as little as 50 per cent of the possible effects at the bit are used. Some observers have indicated that the best utilization of hydraulic horsepower (maximum effect on drilling rate) occurs when the bit hydraulic horsepower is maximum; others have stated that jet impact force is more important, and others have believed that maximum jet velocity is required. Limited efforts to date have shown some optimum conditions for bit hydraulic horsepower and impact, but these conditions cannot exist during drilling of a large part of the hole and do not provide a basis for designing a complete jet-bit program. This paper shows the maximum obtainable bit horsepower, impact force and jet velocity at all depths, taking into account the limitations of the pump, piping, hole and minimum circulating rate for adequate cuttings removal. Ranges of operation are developed; and flow rates, surface pressure and bit pressures are specified for each range to provide a maximum of any one of the desired effects. It also is shown that, by proper selection of nozzle sizes and by following the rules presented, the maximum obtainable quantities can be effectively utilized from surface to total depth. Finally, a simple graphical method of selecting nozzle sizes and flow rates is presented which can be used with familiar bit-company hydraulic tables and calculators to design jet-bit programs for maximum bit hydraulic horsepower, impact or jet velocity, as desired. These programs make most effective use of the pumps. Heretofore, there was no method available for designing field tests which adequately separated the effects of bit horsepower, impact and jet velocity. The programs and procedures developed in the paper are dissimilar and, when used in future field testing, should demonstrate which program is the most important in obtaining the fastest drilling rate. INTRODUCTION During the past decade, rig hydraulics has come into increasing prominence. There has been a definite trend toward providing higher horsepower pumps, jet-type bits have had increased use, numerous investigators"" have reported increased drilling rates as a result of increased hydraulics, and bit manufacturers have provided tablesa-" and calculators that are now commonly used 10 design jet-bit programs. Opinion has varied as to the hydraulic quantity which has the great- est effect on drilling rate. Papers and data have been presented that show pump horsepower,'9 it hydraulic horsepower and jet impact force,' each to be the most significant factor affecting drilling rate. Examinatibn of jet-bit programs of the bit companies indicates emphasis on jet velocity. Only pump horsepower can be eliminated because it can be used to produce any one of the bit effects which, a priori, must be more relevant factors. This contradictory state of opinion and practice regarding the bit effects is unfortunate, but several published references have been concerned with making one or another of the factors maximum; and, because these in each case have given results applicable to only intervals of the hole drilled, there seems to be ample reason to complete the previous efforts. It also is believed that the differences in programs for each effect, where they exist, should be delineated so that future use may determine which hydraulic effect is the more relevant. It is the purpose of this paper to: (1) show the theoretical maximum bit hydraulic horsepower, jet impact force and jet velocity available at all depths, taking into consideration all necessary restrictions on operating conditions; (2) illustrate procedures by which the maximum available horsepower, impact force or veIocity may be obtained; and (3) present a graphical method for rapid selection of jet-nozzle sizes and flow rates to be used with conventional procedures to design jet-bit programs for maximum bit horsepower, impact force or velocity as desired.

THE second operation in the art of casting, and one of the greatest importance, is that of melting and thoroughly liquefying the materials of which you wish to make your casting. On this operation depends the whole outcome of your intentions and the perfection of your work. Without it, even though you had a great abundance of moulds and vast quantities of bronze, your desires, labor, and expense would all be in vain. In this operation I find on consideration that, in addition to experience, there are three necessities-perhaps indeed four-that must be provided without fail. The first is the furnace or other agent which contains the fire and the metal brought together. The second is the wood or charcoal which is the necessary and proper nutriment of the fire, from whose virtues are derived the greater or lesser forces which, according to their kind, are ready to effect what is required. The third is to have the materials disposed to easy fusion by means of corruption, alloying, or by their own nature. The fourth, as the motivating cause of the whole, could perhaps be listed as the first-this is the ingenuity and good judgment of the worker, together with the bodily exertions not only of himself but also of his helpers in addition. For, besides a certain ordinary caution, it is necessary to pay particular attention, first, to see that the furnaces, machines, ladles, hearths, refineries, and other kinds of instruments or similar vessels be made so as to dispose the metals for melting, and, when melted, that they easily maintain them so. These should also be prepared in such a way that they cannot be injured by the fire, for if they should be damaged the operation would fail. In order to do this, it is first necessary that you arrange the instruments with forethought and action so that the power of the fire can operate. Fire operates on things only when brought together with them in long-continued operation, or when driven by a great force of wind. It burns many things and softens others, but it makes the metals as liquid as water.

That the death of Martin Coryell, which occurred at Lambertville, New Jersey, on Monday morning, November 29th, touched the sympathies of a wide circle of professional associates and personal friends, was amply testified by the gathering at the funeral services on Friday. Like his distinguished friend and neighbor, the late Ashbel Welch, Mr. Coryell was one of those pioneers in American engineering to whom we owe the great railway and canal systems which lie at the base of our national prosperity, and who have consequently enjoyed the respect and esteem of their successors of the present generation. Martin Coryell was born July 20th, 1815, at New ope, Rucks County, Pa., and was educated principally in the schools of his native town arid of Lambertville, New Jersey, to which place he returned for permanent residence fifty years later. With the exception of a brief period in youth, during which, to restore his failing health, he learned and practiced for a few months the carpenter's trade, and another brief period, later in life, when he read law for a time in the office of B. H. Brewster, of Philadelphia, afterwards Attorney-General of the United States, Mr. Coryell may be said to have spent his life as an active civil and mining engineer. Even these two episodes can scarcely be said to have been deviations from that profession, since they served to give him more thorough preparation for constructive and administrative work. The Delaware Division Canal, the Raritan Canal, and the Brunswick Canal, are among those upon which Mr. Coryell was employed. For the Raritan Canal Company, under the superintendence of Ashbel Welch, he located the greater part of the Belvidere Railroad (now the Belvidere division of the Pennsylvania Railroad), and directed its construction from Trenton to Lambertville. He was also active as a mining engineer, being one of the early pioneers of mining in the Lake Superior copper region, and had much to do with the development of the Hazleton coalfield and the railroad which has since expanded into the Lehigh Valley system. In 1862, he removed to Wilkes-Barre, where, in 1864, he became manager of the Warrior Run Mining Company. One of the editors

Seepages of oil in Ecuador have been known for many years. The locality first to receive attention, and still worked in a modest way, lies on the north shore of the Santa Elena peninsula, between La Puntilla and Salinas. Operations mere first conducted largely by local cdpital. Later, foreign companies acquired large blocks of land, where they have done considerable drilling. For details concerning present drilling activities in Ecuador, we are indebted to Leon Price, an Ame~ican resident engineer of Ecuador. The information solicited came to the author through the office of the American Consulatell with permission to use it. The coastal plain bordering the Province of Tumbes, Peru, continues to the northeast, but narrow on passing the Zarumilla River. From this point northward it widens toward Santa Rosa. In fact, the pampas, as shown on the official Wolf map, correspond fairly well to the areal extent of tbe coastal plain as far as Guayaquil. This is shown in a general way on the accompanying map. The author understands that the Guayaquil enlbayment is bordered on all sides by the coastal plain, as recognized at Tumbes and farther southwest, and that it can be followed without a break as far north as Palmar. This view is supported by the mapped area regarded by Mr. Price as favorable or possible oil territory. Moreover the islands in the Gulf of Guayaquil are the same geologically as the coastal edge, being composed of Tertiary sediments. The author understands also that Tertiary formations occur north of Palmar. According to a report by Mr. Cardon, of Guayaquil, Tertiary sediments are exposed in the region of San Francisco and extend to and beyond Pta. Calera. There is also reason to believe that at least the lower part of the valley of the Santiago River is occupied by Tertiary sediments, ~~hich probably border the const line and extend into the River Mini l)nsin, and into Colombia. On the south coast there are many seepages, most of them near the inner edge of the coastal plain, between Zarumilla and Santa Rosa and also between Santa Rosa and Machala. I11 the latter region are

E, through their monthly meetings, a report of the year's progress is almost superfluous To the members who read the monthly reports of the Board Meetings and of the various activities of the Institute as published each month, a yearly report cannot carry much fresh infor¬mation, yet for both it may be well, as is the custom, to glance over the field of our activities during the past year, and to make an estimate for the year to come The beginning of 1924 was not propitious for the members of the mining profession, though tonnage, production for 1923 had been high and the gross value higher than for several years The margin of profit had been narrow, prospecting and development were limited, and many of our members were unemployed or were working in other industries Toward the end of the year, higher metal prices were in sight Old-time optimism began to grow, and it now brightens the outlook for 1925 An excellent barometer of the prosperity of the industry, and that of the Institute, for they go hand in hand, is the work of our Employment Bureau During the past few months, the percentage of our members for whom openings have been found has been increasing to a marked extent, and many members who had fallen in arrears are placing themselves in good standing The number of new members joining has remained about as it was in 1922 and 1923 The Directors have reason to congratulate themselves on the interest maintained during a dull period, for it is not humanly possible to take a keen interest in the technology of an industry when our hands and minds are not actively engaged in it Now, with a much brighter outlook, we can look forward to a year of increasing prosperity for the industry and for the Institute

WILLIS,* Bisbee, Ariz.-(written discussion?).-The consensus of the discussion of the paper of Dr. Lanza indicates that the physical examination, while it is probably a good thing, is fought by the workingman, and that, because of this fact, it has been proved unsuccessful. The physical examination standing alone is worth but little, and could easily be made a subject both of ridicule and dissension unless the company having such examination shows its own good faith in promoting a thoroughly better health program. It is easily seen why a workman would resent his employer expecting him to be physically fit, if at the same time the employer provides un-healthful, unsanitary, working conditions, or if the town in which the employees are expected to live is dirty and unkempt. One mocks the other. The employer cannot say, "You must remain healthy so that I can get by with unhealthy conditions." But if working- conditions are as good as can be obtained to keep men well, the employer can ask his men to be in a healthy condition. A State examination and standard would have many difficulties, owing to the fact that a man would pass or would not pass the standard set, thus eliminating the discretion on the part of the employer in placing men whose physical condition might well permit working in one place and not another. Any physical examination that is run for the purpose of eliminating the physically unfit is unjust, both to the worker and to the nation as a whole; a State examination would make a distinct dividing line, whereas examination by the employer is conducted with a vision of the positions available. The workman's opposition to the physical examination comes from the fact that he has been taught to believe that it is an interference in his personal affairs, that he can be clean or dirty as he chooses, that he can he healthy or unhealthy, and that it is nobody's business but his own. The war has taught us, however, that the individual is no longer the unit and that all such propositions must be based on the greatest good for the greatest number.

In order to facilitate interpretation of the data in this chapter, we print the following excerpts from circulars to authors, compiled by Mr. Frank A. Herald when he was Vice-chairman for Production of the Petroleum Division: Generally in Table 1 the unit for presentation of data is a field. For our purposes a field is defined as the whole of a surface area wherein productive locations are continuous. Such unit commonly includes and surrounds nonproductive areas. Such unit commonly includes a great variety of geologic conditions-—several units of continuous productive reservoirs of distinctly different structure and of distinctly dzerent stratigraphy. Therefore it is hoped that our authors will subdivide "field" so as to enable students to make analyses that may have scientific and/or commercial value. As to each space in the tabulation, it is either (1) not applicable, (2) the proper entry is not determinable, (3) the proper entry is determinable, but not determinable from data available to the author, (4) the proper entry is determinable by the author. In spaces not applicable, the author will please draw horizontal lines; in spaces where the proper entries are not determinable, the author will please insert x; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable but not determinable from data available to the author, the author will please insert y; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable by the author he will, of course, make such entries. Generally, y implies a hope that in some future year a definite figure will be available. Inability to determine precisely the correct entry for a particular space should not lead the author to insert merely y. Contributions of great value may be made by the author in many cases where entries are not subject to precise determination. In such cases the author should use his good judgment and make the best entry possible under the circumstances. For many spaces, the correct entries represent the opinion of the author (for example, "Area Proved") and in such cases the entries need not be hedged to such extent as in cases where the quantities are definite yet can be ascertained only approximately by the author. In cases under definite headings but where figures are only approximate, the author may use 2. For example, if the total production of a field is known to be between 1,800,000 and 1,850,000, the author may report l,8x,xxx; or if the production is between 1,850,000 and 1,900,000, the author may report 1,9xx,xxx. Where a numeral is immediately to the left of x or y, such numeral represents the nearest known number in that position. As to quantity of gas produced from many fields the question will arise as to whether the figures should include merely the gas marketed or should include also estimates of gas used in operations and gas wasted. The orientation and temperature dependence of the tensile and creep propevties oj Mav-M200 crystals halle been determined. Crystals oriented for single slip exhibit ,maximum ductility, minimum work hardening, and least creep resistance, whereas crystals in multiple slip orientations show nzinimu~n ductility, strongest work hardening, and greatest creep resistance. At 1400" and 1600°F there is a marked improzlenzent in creep strength for orientations approaching [001] and [111], indicating that interactions between dislocations gliding in intersecting octahedral slip systems play an important role in creep resistance. At 1800°F the creep strength is much less dependent on orientation, which is rationalized in terms of slip in cube planes as well as octahedral A frequent mode of failure in high-strength cast nickel-base superalloys is by intergranular fracture, particularly along those grain boundaries oriented transverse to the major stress axis. VerSnyder and ~uard' demonstrated that this problem could be overcome by eliminating transverse grain boundaries through unidirectional solidification. Piearcey and versnyder2 made use of this principle in the development of unidirectionally solidified gas turbine blades and vanes, where the growth direction of the columnar grain structure coincides with the axis of principal stress under operating conditions. The present investigation was undertaken to determine if further improvement in properties may be obtained by eliminating grain boundaries altogether, so as to take advantage of the well-known dependence of mechanical properties of single crystals upon the orientation. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Single crystals of Mar-M200* were grown from the melt under vacuum by a modified Bridgman method. The melt was poured into a preheated alumina mold, and crystal growth was promoted from one end by appropriate gradient cooling. Tensile and creep specimens (2 in. diam by $ in. gage length) were prepared by a series of operations involving electrical discharge machining, precision grinding, and electropolishing. The orientations of the specimens were determined by the Laue X-ray back-reflection method. Tensile tests were carried out in aWiedemann machine with furnace attachment, using a strain rate planes. In all orientations imzpvouement in the strength charactevistics of the material can be induced by heat treatment. Creep ad stress rupture data for (001) oriented crystals are compared with similar data obtailted previously joy random polycvystalline material, and also columnar grained material having a prejevved (001) orientation. The single-crystal )material exhibits both longer rupture life and lower minimum creep rate at all temperatuves, and the rupture elongation is comparable with that in the columnar grained material. From these results it is concluded that single crystals should and useful application in gas-turbine blades and tanes. The optimum orientation for a blade is considered to be with its axis of principal stvess parallel to (001) ou (111). of 0.0001 sec-'. Load and extension were recorded directly on an X-Y recorder. The strain measuring device consisted of extension arms attached to the grips at one end and leading out of the furnace to an LVDT (linear variable differential transformer) at the other. Creep tests were performed using a standard constant load creep frame. 2) DISCUSSION OF RESULTS 2.1) Structure of Alloy. The structure and segregation in as-cast and heat-treated Mar-M200 has been described in detail else where.~ The main features are as follows: the as-cast material is heavily cored, due to pronounced dendritic segregation during solidification; the dendrites are rich in tungsten and cobalt whereas the interdendritic regions are rich in chromium, titanium, nickel, and carbon. The structure consists of -60 vol pct coherent precipitate of y', basically Ni3(A1,Ti), in a matrix of y (nickel-base solid solution), interspersed in the interdendritic regions with minor MC carbides and -y' eutectic. The y' particles, and y-y' eutectic, contain more titanium, aluminum, and nickel, and less tungsten, cobalt, and chromium than the y matrix. Heat treatment partially removes segregation, eliminates the eutectic, refines the y' dispersion in y, and gives additional partially coherent M23Cs carbide. An as-cast crystal, therefore, is composed primarily of two oriented phases (y + y'), whereas the normally heat-treated crystal consists of three oriented phases (y + y' + MZ3Cs). Typical electron transmission micrographs of the y + y' structure are shown in Fig. 1. Crystals grown in the (100) orientation develop a simple unidirectional dendritic structure, Fig. 2, since (100) happens to be the preferred direction of growth for dendrites in this material. Crystals grown in the {110) and (111) orientations, however, tend to promote equal growth, generally in separate colonies, in the two and three geometrically favored (100) growth directions, respectively. The statements and results recorded in Mr. Howland's paper can be accounted for by the use of coke with a low sulphur content (0.60 and under). This allows the furnaces to be run on a small volume of acid slag, which it is presumed was done in Mr. Howland's practice. H. A. Brassert has admitted that this was the largest factor in low fuel consumption in his practice. Where the coke contains from 1.00 to 1.25 per cent. of sulphur the situation is quite different and I doubt whether the results mentioned by Mr. Howland could be obtained under such circumstances. ` N. M. LANGDON, Mancelona, Mich. (communication to the Secretary + ).-Gruner's ideal working (which is but a statement of the law first enunciated by Bell) as given in Gordon's Translation of Studies of Blast Furnace Phenomena, "supposes that the reduction of the oxide of iron is effected by the CO only, without intervention of solid carbon." This ideal, if reached, would mean theoretically perfect or 100 per cent. efficiency of reduction. The workings of the large number of furnaces as given in Bell's and Gruner's great works do not show that this standard of perfection ever was reached. This problem has been worked out by the writer for a number of furnaces, and his results, as well as those given by others, all show a failure to reach perfection. Some furnaces, however, approach nearer to perfection than others. The "ideal" as given by Gruner was not stated as a solved problem in blast-furnace practice, but as an ideal to the attainment of which furnace managers should strive. A study of the factors involved from every angle is interesting and instructive and the paper on this subject contributed by H. P. Howland is no exception to the rule. This article is fairly open to criticism, not because of the unique method of presenting the subject, but for the reason that, as the writer conceives, erroneous assumptions are taken which lead naturally to incorrect conclusions.

NO ONE could fail to be gratified to receive so profound an approbation in his calling from the members of one's own profession. To have re-ceived this distinction from men, many of whom have been professional associates and friends over more than a quarter of a century, warrants a pride. and satisfac-tion that could come from no other source. It has often been said that men are really known only to their brothers in labor and in profession. The long friendship I have received from Mr. Saunders and the distinguished service that he has contributed to the mining industry add to my appre-ciation of this event. Mr. Kelley's remarks bring my mind easily to the beginning of that period of great advance in the engineering, profession of forty years ago. Three great forces contributed to the development of the profession. The first was the era of intense development of minerals, metallurgy; and transportation in our great West. It greatly stimulated invention; it made a demand for training and skill on the part of our engineers. The pressure of national development advanced our American practice beyond the rest of the world. Moreover, the skill of our engineers of that period owes a great debt to American educators. The leaders of our universities were the first of all the educators of the world to recognize that upon them rested the responsibility to provide fundamental train-ing in, the application of science to engineering under the broadening influence and cultivation of university life. They were the first to realize that engineering must be transformed into a profession in the highest sense, not only in the training and character but that the essential quality of a profession is the instillation of ethics. That implies not alone the job but the responsibility of the community for the job. Our uni-versities poured into our development a great stream of men with this background and training. A third distinction that grew in American engineering was the transformation from solely a technical profession to a profession of administrators-the business manager with technical training.

IN THE southwestern Wisconsin zinc district, lying in Lafayette, Grant, and Iowa Counties, and the adjoining territory in northwestern Illinois, the orebodies are generally small, and are mined out in a few years. Many of the mines are developed with an expectation of five years or less of actual production. For this reason, as well as for considerations of economy, certain features in the development practice, which have been worked out with a view toward keeping the ratio of time required for, development to that occupied by actual production as small as possible, are of interest. ORGANIZATION The organization of a crew for, this work is as follows: Inasmuch as speed in sinking is desirable, the shaft crew comprises three shifts working 8 hr. each. In the smaller shafts, running up to 6 by 12 ft. (1.8 by 3.6 in.) in size, two men are employed on a shift; in larger shafts an additional man is usually employed. A mine foreman, or ground boss, has general control of the work of the three shifts. He is usually with the crew on the first and the early part of the second shifts, and plans the work to be done for the third shift when it comes on. His schedule, of course, is flexible and when pump changes, or other special conditions warrant, he, arranges his working time to suit the occasion. The surface crew for a sinking operation is made up of two hoistermen, each working 12-hr. shifts. Since the various operations in the shaft must be conducted in succession,. and not in combination, one with the other, separate attendance for hoisting and general plant is unnecessary. Drilling is done when no hoisting is necessary and vice versa. The hoisterman trams out and dumps the excavated material which the crew in the shaft is mucking, as a part of his regular hoisting work.
