RECRYSTALLIZATION textures-the orientations of grains after recrys-tallization-have been studied extensively not only because of their metallurgical importance but also because of the information they yield regarding the atomic movements during recrystallization. Recrystallized grains must possess the same orientations as the submicroscopic nuclei from which they have grown, and thus they offer a direct road by which experimenters can penetrate the submicroscopic realm. Many perplexing results have come of these studies, but one of the most striking has been the apparent difference in behavior between single crystals and polycrystalline grains. For example, Burgers and Louwerse have shown' that when single crystals of aluminum are deformed by compression and are recrystallized (at 600° C.) the new grains appear with orientations that are different from the orientations of the deformed crystal in which they grew; but polycrystalline specimens, on the other hand, appear to have a [110] fiber texture both before and after recrystal-lization and thus to retain their texture during recrystallization. This apparent difference between the habits of single crystals and small grains is the subject of the first part of the present research and has been explained by findings reported herein. A similar situation appears to exist for aluminum when elongated or drawn into wires, for single crystals alter their orientation2,3 and polycrystalline wires retain their texture 4,1 6 upon recrystallization after elongation (at least with high-purity alumi-num), and it is possible that the explanation found in this paper for compression can be extended to cover elongation and other types of deformation as well. The second part of this paper deals with the theory of recrystallization textures. In the most successful theory for aluminum recrystallized after compression,1 much weight is given to the orientation of highly stressed nuclei in the deformed material. Taylor's "local distortions" are assumed to exist along the slip planes where displacement has occurred, consisting of fragments rotated in a specific way with reference to the slip plane and slip direction; namely, about an axis lying in the slip plane perpendicular to the slip direction. 1,7,8,9

The data which are collected in Table 1 show that the ferrite of low-carbon steel and of electrolytic iron, like the network of hypo- and hyper-eutectoid carbon steel, inherits, either absolutely or relatively, the grain size of the mother austenite from which it is born in cooling through the transformation range. This evidence is so abundant and concordant as to cast doubt on Prof. Jeffries'l hypothesis of what might be called reversed inheritance, by which he explains Mr. Ruder's observation2 that a grain in a "slug of pressed pure electrolytic iron powder" was coarser, perhaps 1,500,000p2, aftcr a 3-hr. exposure to 1000" C. than after a 3-hr. exposure to 1250-1300°, when the grain size was about 35,000µ2. His explanation implies a natural tendency of coarser austenite grains to yield finer ferrite ones than spring from finer austenite grains, so that the inheritance is reversed. What seems to me a simpler explanation is that the enormous grains which followed the 1000" heating were not inherited from the mother austenite, but were formed by the process of natal coarsening, by means of which Stead and Carpenter developed grains of this same order of magnitude in this same kind of material, on heating to 950" or to 1000°, the temperature used by Mr. Ruder, provided the exposure was not unduly prolonged, and it does not seem to have been in Mr. Ruder's case. That their coarsening was natal and not through inheritance is shown first by the fact that their grain coarseness was out of all proportion to their relatively low temperatures and short periods, and hence was very far in excess of the grain size which the mother austenite must have had, and second and more cogently by the fact that the shape of these coarsened grains was evidently determined by the temperature distribution which existed during and immediately after the Ar3 transformation, that during the passage from the gamma to the non-gamma state. INTRODUCTION THE present sketch is submitted by request in the hope that it may serve as a basis for geologic discussion of the mining camps in Mohave County, which is experiencing a marked revival of activities. The region, commonly known as the Mohave district and Kingman district, lies in western Arizona in the southern part of Mohave County, bordering California and Nevada on the west (Fig. 1). Kingman, the principal-town; is situated near the center of the area. on. the Atchison, Topeka & Sante Fe Transcontinental Railway. This region is composed of naked desert ranges of mountains and broad detritus-filled valleys, the southern extension of the characteristic topography of the Great Basin. In altitude it varies from 500 ft. in the southwest to 8,300 ft. on Hualpai Peak southeast of Kingman. The mountains trend north-northwest. They rise about 3,000 ft. above the valleys, are generally rugged and were formed mainly by erosion. They are composed in the main of a, complex of pre-Cambrian granitoid rocks which underlies the area as a whole. Like the valleys, they average about 10 miles in width. Beginning on the east, they are the Grand Wash Cliffs, the Cerbat Range, the Black Mountains or River Range, and the Eldorado Range. The upper or dominantly cliff half of the Grand Wash Cliffs, marking the edge of the Colorado Plateau, is composed of nearly horizontal sedimentary Paleozoic strata of the Grand Canyon section, and the lower half of the underlying pre-Cambrian complex. The Cerbat Mountains situated in the central part of the area, and the Black Mountains situated between Detrital-Sacramento Valley on the east and Mohave Valley, the great trough of the Colorado River, on the west, are locally flanked or overlain by Tertiary volcanics (Fig. 2). The latter consist of five groups of mountains of which the most important is the Black Mesa group on the south. The Eldorado Range, rising from the great trough of the Colorado on the west and containing Searchlight, Eldorado Canyon, and other camps, is topographically and geologically similar to the Black Mountains.

Introduction.—The spccial object of these notes is to describe the mixing, testing, and use of mud-ladened water for rotary drilling in such a way as to make them helpful to the driller, the operator, or the engineer in solving his own special drilling problems. The structures, apparatus and tools used are indicated in a general way. No attempt is made to describe the art of rotary drilling; only such descriptions as are necessary to make plain the use of mud are given. The information is the result of actual experience in drilling in Coastal Plain formations. The materials encountered in the wells drilled were unconsolidated sands, gravels, and clays, in which thin layers of sandstones, shell conglomerates, and shales began to appear at about 1,200 ft, in depth, although one well was drilled to 3,018 ft. without encountering any cemented or indurated materials. Unusual Conditions.—-The general surface of the ground where the drilling was done being hardly a foot above mean tide, and the daily tidal variation being about 15 in., it was found necessary to plank over the sod surface with 3-in. plank to work from. A 30 by 30 ft. planked area was sufficient to carry the derrick with equipment and 2,500 ft. of 4-in. drill pipe stacked in it. The derrick was set up 3 ft. on cribbed blocking arranged to spread the load over the planking. The engine, bailers, and pipe yard were also carried on 3-in. planking. Drilling 0utfit.—This consisted of a derrick, 20 by 20 ft. and 84 ft. high, two 35-h.p., "oil country" boilers, one double 8 1/4 by 10 in. reversible engine, two 10 by 6 by 12 in. duplex mud pumps, one 15-in. rotary, "hoisting works" with chain drive, hoisting block with line, crown block with pulleys, rotary jetting swivels, hose, complement of tools, pipes and connections, and a mud mixer, with engine. THE small agricultural village of Santa Barbara, in the State of Guanajuato, has been the center of spasmodic tin-mining operations during recent years. The deposits, so far as I know, are unique, and a few brief notes may be of interest. Santa Barbara, about 12 miles west of San Felipe station on the Mexican National Railway, and at an elevation of 2,400 m. above sea-level, is situated in a flat valley extending east and west, and bounded north and south by broken rugged bills rising about 330 m. above the general level of the valley. Tin-mining operations have been conducted-at the Queensland mine, near this village. A small concentrating-mill was erected and attempts were made to smelt the ore in reverberatory furnaces. The country-rock of the district for many miles is rhyolite of great thickness. There are some local variations due to differences in cooling, or subsequent alteration or impregnation; but throughout the whole district the principal constituents of the rocks remain the same, viz., free silica, orthoclase-feldspar and sanidine. The latter is especially marled. The crevice and joints of the rock are frequently filled with calcedonic and opalescent quartz. The ore-formation at the Queensland mine is of an unusual nature, consisting of cracks in the rhyolite which have been filled with clay. This phenomenon is largely developed over a width of from 80 to 100 m., in which the principal fissuring follows an approximate direction of north and south. The av¬erage clip ranges between 70 to 80 degrees. Some of the fissures bold sufficiently true for a time to afford the impression that they are clue to dynamic causes, or earth-movement. The purpose of this paper is to present some data and comparisons regarding three types of Rheolaveur plants washing bituminous coal from the Pittsburgh seam. It deals only with the sections that handle coarse coal. The Rheolaveur system consists of launders or troughs in which coal and its associated impurities are conveyed by water. The impurities. being heavier than the coal, settle toward the bottoms of the launders and are drawn off through specially designed openings called Rheo boxes. Fundamentally, each plant consists of straight-sided, flat-bottomed launders of varying width and length, each launder equipped with one or more Rheo boxes for the removal of high-grauity fractions of the feed that are undesirable in the cleaned coal. Each launder has at least two longitudinal sections, the first with a slope of from 11/2 to 4 in. per foot of length, called the classification section. The single-box launder has a classification section followed by a washing section ahead of the box. A two-box launder is a single-box launder followed by a washing section and a second box. The slope of the washing section between the first and second boxes is determined to some extent by tonnage. At the end of the classification section, which may. vary from 8 to 15 ft. in length, the slope abruptly flattens out to a slope of from 92' to 1 in. per foot of length. This flatter section of the launder, called the washing section, may vary from a few feet, in a single-box launder, to 15 ft., in a two-box launder. Raw coal entering the head end of what we choose to call the "primary" launder or launders is pushed down the classification section by a stream of water entering the head end of the launder with the coal. As it strikes the washing section, of lower pitch, the velocity of flow is retarded and the heavier particles of slate, pyrite, bone, etc., take their places on the bottom and are drawn off as they pass over the Rheo boxes. FOUR mines at Wabana, on Bell Island in Concep-tion Bay, Newfoundland, produced 1,209,777 tons of ore in 1927, and it is expected that the produc-tion will be larger in 1928. The ore is a stratified oolitic hematite of sedimentary origin. Three workable beds and many thin beds occur in a thickness of 400 ft. of interbedded sandstones and shales. It is not profitable under present conditions to mine extensively in ore beds less than 4 ft. thick. The iron ore beds outcrop on the small island and are inclined northward more steeply, than the slope of the ocean bottom. The mine work-ings follow the bedded ore below the sea bottom, No. 3 Mine extending about 2 miles north of the island. At this point there is a cover of 1500 ft. of rock and 600 ft. of ocean water. It is impracticable to operate drills in the ocean to prove the extent of the submarine orebody in advance, and diamond drilling from the mine workings is the only method of exploration. Bell Island has been settled for a long time and a monument at Cupids, near Brigus at the head of Conception Bay, commemor-ates the tercentenary of a settlement there in 1611 by Captain Guy of England. was one of the chief ports of Newfoundland for deep sea fishing and doubtless many a captain wondered about the red rocks as he sailed past. The famous geologist, J. B. Jukes, records seeing a bright red sandstone 8 ft. thick on the northwest side of Bell Island during a visit in 1842, but he evident ly did not try to land on that rocky coast to get a sample. The iron ore is plainly visible in the high cliffs along the coast of the island, as bright brown layers interbedded with gray and white sandstones and dark shales. The heavy red rock was used by the fisher-men as anchor weights for fish nets and small boats, but its real value, so the story goes, was discovered by a merchant in Saint John,

In a series of papers, the authors and their associates have shown the influence of four important factors on the technical cohesion limit.3-l6 By "technical cohesion limitv is meant the technically determin-able resistance to fracture. The four importarlt factors are the stress system, plastic deformation, temperature, and the strain rate, The influence of any one of these factors may be represented by a curve of cohesion limits, although only one point on the curve may represent actual fracture. As the term "fracture stress" has come into general use with the same significance as technical cohesion limit, the authors are here using the shorter term with the understanding that it does not always refer to actual fracture. The previously mentioned series of papers contains ample evidence that plastic extension increases the fracture stress of any polycrystalline metal, In a recent paper of the series,l5 moreover, it has been shown that the effect of plastic deformation on the fracture stress cannot be attributed to reorientation of internal flaws but is a work-strengthening effect, similar to the effect on the flow stress, $ Plastic deformation of steels, however, may not only cause work hardening, but may result in additional hardness because of strain aging. Some evidence that strain aging affects not only the flow stress but also the fracture stress, has been presented in a recent paper.14 In that paper, a study is made of the influence Of Plastic deformstion at room temperature on the fracture stress of ferritic steels at -188°C. The study is based on the results Of two-stage tests. In the first stage each specimen was extended a predetermined amount at room temperature; in the second stage the specimen was tested to fracture in liquid air. In most Of these tests the specimen remained in the testing machine during the interval of about one hour between the first and second stages, it was kept under a tensile load of about 500 lb and maintained at liquid air temperature. The effects of various amounts of .plastic deformation on the fracture stress were thus determined and curves were obtained to represent the influence of plastic deformation at room temperature on the stress at brittle fracture in liquid air.14 Two specimens Of ingot iron, however, were removed from the testing machine at the end of the first stage and several days elapsed before the specimens were tested to fracture in liquid air, As shown in Fig 8 of that paper," the points representing fracture of these specimens are far above the curve representing the results of two-stage tests without a rest interval between the stages. The assay or estimation of the total gold content of an ore presents little difficulty, when circumstances permit of securing a thoroughly representative sample. The general practice has been fairly standardized, and such errors as occur in the results obtained are for the most part attributable to the methods of sampling rather than to those of assaying, while duplicate assays made by skilled workers usually agree closely. When it is a question of estimating the "free" or amalgamable gold of an ore, as opposed to the total gold, there is but little uniformity in the methods employed by different workers, and often equally little in the results obtained when duplicate determinations are attempted, no satisfactory standard method having been generally adopted. The methods in use are of two general types—"panning" and "amalgamation." Panning For the estimation of the value of the visible gold by panning or washing, a weighed sample may be taken, ranging from an ounce to several pounds; a kilogram or 2 lb. is a favorite quantity for laboratory tests, while a prospector often uses a full miners' pan, say nearly 20 lb. or 10 kg. In the case of rich quartz, ground to about 30 or 40 mesh, a Mexican horn is convenient, using 1 to 8 02;. of material, and a 6-in. frying pan is favored by many prospectors in dry districts. Bateas, plaques, and dishes of various patterns are used for the same purpose. With these, fairly close results may be obtained by using for ocular comparison standards consisting of weighed amounts of gold of similar character as regards purity, fineness of division, and the general shape of the particles, which standards are preferably obtained from gold of the same locality, or the same deposit, as the ore or gravel being tested. Men working in one particular district sometimes become surprisingly expert in thus judging the value of an ore by the eye, the weights of both ore and gold being guessed. On the other hand, many have been led to overestimate the value of ore and gravel from unfamiliar localities, where the gold has been very finely divided or of unusually high silver content, and a novice may

Y.-I should like to ask the authors if there is any evidence of chemical change resulting information of, alpha iron from the gamma crystals found in nickel steel of high nickel content when stressed beyond the elastic limit, similar to the effect produced by drastic cooling. Would the stresses mentioned and the drastic cooling both result in an increase in magnetic induction? I would also like to ask the authors if they have made a test of the hardness. It would be very interesting to see whether the hardness decreased under the conditions of stress, as might be the case if alpha iron were produced. PAUL D. MERICA, Washington, D. There are two places in the world where potash, trade name for potassium chloride, is economically recovered from naturally occurring brines by solar evaporation. One is at the Dead Sea and the other at Wendover, Utah. American Potash and Chemical at Trona, Calif. recovers potash from natural brines, but uses fuel to accomplish evaporation. Solar evaporation is always desirable, because of low costs, however artificial evaporation may be economical if a group of very valuable salts are recovered. This is the case for the American Potash operations at Trona. Solar evaporation is limited by low working temperatures, which in most areas of the world is between 18 and 45°C. In many cases the average working temperature is about 25°C. However, solar evaporation will have to accommodate itself to the highs and lows of each 24 hour period, and to the different average temperatures during the months of the year. Therefore, solar evaporation, although more economical than artificial evaporation, has a tem- perature limit which greatly reduces the chances of its application. The feasibility of solar evaporation as a means of recovery of values from a particular brine, may be evaluated by the use of phase diagrams showing the several components present. This paper is restricted to the five component system: C1-, SO4=, Na+, K+, Mg++, and H2O, which correspond to brines found at Wendover, Utah, the Great Salt Lake, and sea water bitterns. THE BONNEVILLE OPERATION AT WENDOVER, UTAH For more than 25 years Bonneville, Ltd., now a division of Standard Magnesium and Chemical Co. (recently acquired by Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp.), has been recovering potassium chloride from the brines found in the desert area just east of Wendover, Utah. Solar evaporation of the brines is possible as a consequence of relatively low precipitations (year average: 4.8 in.), and of dry and hot summer months. The brine, collected by a series of approximately 67 mi. of ditches crossing the desert, is fed into solar evaporation ponds. Evaporation which takes place from around the middle of May to about the end of September, permits the crystallization of approximately 90% of the originally present NaCl on what is called the "General Pond Area". During 1947, a Sinclair research team was assigned to investigate thermal methods of oil recovery. The assignment was recommended by a survey of possible research approaches to increase the amount of oil that ultimately can be recovered from oil producing reservoirs. The use of heat to stimulate oil production rates by the melting of paraffin deposited in well bores can be traced back to within one or two decades of the drilling of the Drake well. The application of heat on a larger scale has been discussed by generations of oil producers. Shortly after the turn of the century, one intrepid operator is reported to have injected steam into a Pennsylvania property. After a few weeks, he apparently became discouraged and terminated his experiment. Subsequently, the literature contains references to several well-developed techniques for supplying heat to a producing well bore to melt paraffin or to reduce the viscosity of oil contained in the formation immediately around the well bore.1.?.3.4 Some early references discuss procedures to furnish heat to the reservoir,5,6 with the injection well as the heat source, thus obligating the process to maintain the entire rock mass at a temperature above that at which the desired improvement in oil recovery would occur. Another approach to reservoir heating was reported by a group of Russian technologists in 1935.7,8,9 They definitely demonstrated that combustion can occur within the porous structure of an oil-bearing sandstone. Their field experiments, however, relied less on combustion within the rock than on heat furnished by combustion of oil supplied to the injection well bore. Ignition of the air-oil mixtures in the well bore was found very difficult, and the field tests were carried on for only short periods of time. Publication of the Russian work spurred at least one independent operator in this country to try firing an air-gas injection well, on for only short periods of time. The broad picture of petroleum refining engineering during 1934 continued to show a tendency in the direction of highly specialized processing improvements, particularly in manufacture of lubricating oil. The slowing up of the trend toward higher octane products in non-premium gasoline noticed in 1933 was definitely established as a fact by 1934 development, with just a slight indication of recession. No outstanding engineering achievements can be credited to 1934 in refinery cracking, unless the completion and successful operation of the 30,000-bbl. crude capacity combination cracking and skimming unit at Texas City, Texas, and a 20,000-bbl. similar unit in the East can be listed as such. Development and improvement was largely a continuation of previous lines of endeavor. Such trend as there is shows a continnation in the direction of very large integrated skimming and cracking units. A lessening of the cost of ethyl lead, coupled with the reaching of the octane number "ceiling," kept the subject of "reforming" low-octane gasoline into high-octane products pretty well in the background. Considerable interest, however, was shown during the year in cracking and polymerizing of refinery gases into high-octane motor fuel. The commercial development and application of this activity was greater in 1934 than during any previous year. Fair yields of gasoline of satisfactory stability and high antiknock value were reported, ranging from 2 to 8 gal. per 1000 cu. ft. of fixed refinery gas, yields varying with both the nature of refinery gas treated and processing methods. Assuming economic feasibility, regarding which there is still difference of opinion, gas polymerization offers the industry a possible outlet for its gases more in keeping with its basic chemical composition and value. The increased interest of railroads and heavy-duty truck and tractor manufacturers served to focus more attention on diesel fuels. The publicity given the Union Pacific diesel train, the Burlington "Zephyr" and others operated on special diesel fuels served to revive the intimations and fears of several years ago as to the ultimate replacement of the gasoline motor by diesel engines in even the passenger car field. The relative interfacial energies of symmetrical tilt boundaries in silver of greater than 99.999 pct purity were measured as a function of orientation difference 0 between 9° and 36° about <001>. The results are in good agreement with the dislocation model of the grain boundary. The energy vs H curve may be represented by the Shockley and Read equation in the form Eoe (0.55—In 8). READ&apos; has indicated that an ideal experimental method of testing the predictions of the dislocation theory of the grain boundary would be to measure the interfacial energies of symmetrical tilt boundaries between face-centered-cubic grains that have a common <001> axis, as a function of orientation difference 0. The misfit H should be defined by a rotation of each grain through an angle of H/2 away from the boundary. Such boundaries might be expected, from geometrical considerations, to be made up of a series of edge dislocations, at least for small values of 0. Energy vs H relationships for tin&apos; and lead:&apos; were previously obtained for an asymmetrical tilt boundary separating two grains in which generally only one grain was rotated about a <001> specimen axis through an angle of H away from the boundary, the other grain remaining fixed. It is possible, however, that the boundary atoms in tin and lead may have attained a symmetrical position, in relation to the orientations of the grains on either side of the boundary, during equilibrium annealing. The two sets of measurements on silicon ferrite&apos; were somewhat better suited for comparison with theory, since the boundaries were symmetrical tilt boundaries in which the axis of relative rotation was <110> in the first series and <l00> in the second; but this alloy has a body-centered-cubic structure. Although the grain boundaries in silver" were symmetrically tilted, the axis of relative rotation was not a simple crystallographic direction, and it varied from boundary to boundary. Although the above measurements were in good agreement with the Shockley and Read equation,"&apos;: it appeared desirable to carry out experiments under the ideal conditions specified by Read.&apos; Consequently, the relative energies of symmetrical tilt boundaries in silver between grains that have a common <001> axis were measured. The technique of equilibrating grain boundaries in oriented tricrystals was used rather than the less satisfactory thermal groove method previously employed for silver bicrystals." Experimental Details and Observations The solidification and seeding techniques, described previouslyh for growing tricrystals of controlled orientations, were used to prepare tricrystal specimens from silver of greater than 99.999 pct purity. The silver was obtained from American Platinum Works, Newark, N. J., in the form of poly crystalline rods 10 cm long and 7 mm in diam. These rods were then cold worked by rolling or drawing them into suitably shaped blanks. Single crystal seeds and tricrystals were grown in a high purity graphite boat by means of a movable furnace with globar heating elements. The graphite boat was enclosed in a Vycor tube, which was first evacuated to about l00/u Hg and then filled with a static argon atmosphere. The maximum temperature outside the Vycor tube was 1250°C. A typical tricrystal specimen of silver is shown in Fig. 1. Grains B and C were grown from seed crystals with a <001> specimen axis or longitudinal direction parallel to the direction of growth and with another <001> direction perpendicular to the surface. Each of the two seed crystals was rotated 18" about the <001> specimen axis but in opposite directions away from the boundary. A symmetrical tilt boundary, therefore, separated grains B and C with an orientation difference 8 of 36" about <001>. Grain A in Fig. 1 was grown from the middle seed with a <110> direction parallel to the specimen axis and with a <001> direction inclined at 45&apos; to the surface of the specimen. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the definition of compressibility and to present a uniform basis upon which instantaneous compressibilities of liquids and gases can be compared. The equations gaverning the instantaneous compressibilities of imperfect gases are derived and the concept of pseudo-reduced compressibility is introduced. Part of the data presented by Brown, Katz et a1 on compressibility factors for natural gases has been rearranged. A graph of pseudo-reduced compressibility vs pseudo-reduced pressure for various pseudo-reduced temperatures is presented. The need for additional work in relating the compressibilities of liquids and gases is discussed. This information should be of value to reservoir engineers in making non-steady state performance calculations in gas reservoirs. It should be of further use irz pointing the direction for additional research in the nature of liquid and gas compressibilities. INTRODUCTION With the increasing use of steady and non-steady state well and reservoir data, there is a corresponding increase in the importance of the various factors entering into such calculations. Increasing emphasis is being placed on the necessity for obtaining reasonably accurate estimates of the physical properties of the reservoir fluids well in advance of the more accurate laboratory data. One such factor is the isothermal coefficient of expansion of the media which are transmitting and attenuating the non-steady state pressure waves. The average isothermal coefficient of expansion, or "compressibility" is a complex function controlled by the physical properties of the formation and the fluids contained therein. The isothermal expansion coefficients for reservoir gases are usually quite variable, in many cases being highly-pressure sensitive. The coefficients for reservoir liquids tend to be pressure sensitive, but not nearly so much as reservoir gases. The coefficients for solids, usually expressed in terms of a "modulus of elasticity" are relatively insensitive to pressure variations within their elastic limits. For this reason, and also because many previous applications have been limited to rel- atively small pressure ranges, there has been a tendency to ignore the variable nature of isothermal expansion coefficients and treat them as constants. Also, the term "compressibility" by which these coefficients are generally designated is commonly confused with a similar term, z, used to define the deviation of an imperfect natural gas from the perfect gas laws. A clear distinction should be made at the outset between the term "compressibility", which is an isothermal coefficient of expansion of a substance, and the term "compressibility factor", z, which refers to the deviation of a gas from the perfect gas laws. Although the scope of this paper is limited to the compressibility of single phase natural gases, it is definitely related to the problem of accurately estimating the compressibilities of single phase hydrocarbon reservoir liquids, which will form the basis of a future presentation. BASIC PRINCIPLES The coefficient of isothermal compressibility of a substance, c, is usually determined from pressure-volume or pressure-length -measurements depending upon whether the substance is single phase gas, liquid, or solid. A convenient method for making such estimates for a finite change in pressure and volume at constant temperature is to use the well known equation V1-V2/V1 (p2 - p1) .....(1) Eq. 1 is negative because the volume of a confined substance decreases as the pressure is increased. In this case V1 > V2 and p2 > p1. This equation is useful in approximating the compressibilities of single phase gases and liquids undergoing small pressure changes. It is evident, however, that this equation is almost identical with the determination of Young&apos;s modulus of elasticity for solids. If the assumption is made that change in length is directly proportional to change in volume, as would very nearly be the case for a steel rod in tension within its elastic limit, then E5=-L1 (p2 - p1)/L1 - L2 .......(2) in which E. is the isothermal expansion coefficient, or Young&apos;s modulus of elasticity, for a solid. THE first specimens of this material which came under my notice, as found in the State of Texas, were sent to me by Mr. J. C. Melcher, of Fayette county, soon after the organization of the State Geological Survey. I wrote him concerning it, and had the locality and manner of occurrence described, but 1 had no opportunity to visit and examine the deposit until the present field-season. Later, specimens were collected by Dr. Penrose and myself on a trip made by boat down the Rio Grande, from Eagle Pass to Hidalgo, in June, 1889. At the time of collection I marked the substance "Albertite," doubtfully, but, on examination, it proved to be nearer Grahamite. The geological horizon of the two occurrences is Tertiary. The first locality mentioned is in the upper part of the beds called by us Fayette beds, and provisionally correlated with the Miocene, or Grand Gulf of Hilgard&apos;s Mississippi section, while the latter is in the lowest strata of the Eocene which are exposed on the Rio

One of the interesting features connected with the great continental uplift, which formed the table land of Mexico, is the great depth to which oxidation and secondary enrichment of orebodies occurred. This table land lies at altitudes ranging from 4000 to 7000 ft. (1219 to 2133 m.) above sea level. Several cases could be cited of oxidized zones in copper and lead mines which reached depths of upward of 1500 ft. (457 m.) below the surface, and it is universally admitted that the oxidized zone in a mine is limited by the permanent water level. Mexico, however, like many other countries in which deserts occur, is visited at rare intervals by tremendous floods, which sometimes cause variable water levels over long periods. The following cases bear out the idea, and lead to interesting conclusions of commercial value. My paper demonstrates that carbonates of ores may occur below water level and sulfides above, and I will endeavor to explain the causes of the phenomena in certain specific instances. But during the past forty years, there have been periods-more or less extended when I was compelled, against my finer instincts, to muck or quit eating. For about the same length of time, I have devised schemes to make mucking faster and more painless.
