Twitchell: While I was attending St. Albans High School, my uncle, who had been the American Consul in Kingston, Ontario, for many years, told me of the excellent mining school there. He also introduced me to a Canadian mining engineer who sparked my interest in mining by noting the possibility of achieving personal success without always being under salary. Well, that appealed to me, so I applied to the Kingston School of Mines at Queen's University.

Observations by transmission electron microscoPy of the microstructures in quenched Fe-A1 alloys provide the basis for revision of the Fe-A1 phase diagram. The diagram is characterized by first-order transitions between the disordered ferromagnetic a! solid solution and the two ordered phases FeAl and Fe3Al. However, second-order transitions showing corre-luted fluctuations in the degree of order near the critical temperature occur between the paramagnetic a! and FeAl and the FeAl and FeAl phases. ELUCIDATION of the true nature of the Fe-A1 equilibrium diagram has proven to be an extremely challenging problem as evidenced by the fact that six quite different versions of the iron-rich portions have been published since 1958.&apos;-6 The most recent diagram shown in Fig. 1 was proposed by Rimlinger6 based on X-ray diffraction analysis and dilatometry. He shows the single-phase fields of the ordered phases of the types FeAl(L20) and Fe3A1(D03) and the disordered bcc Fe-A1 solid solution, a, separated from one another in every case by large two-phase regions. Thus, he implies that in Fe-A1 alloys ordering always occurs via a classical phase transition. In contrast to this view, theoretical studies3&apos;" have concluded that the transitions a — FeAl and FeAl — Fe3A1 should be second- or higher-order in character. A further revision of the Fe-A1 diagram of state is presented in Fig. 2 based on our previous8,9 and current observations by transmission electron microscopy of the microstructures found in quenched specimens. The average quenching rate was 50,000°C per sec and although this was sufficiently rapid to prevent Fe3A1-type ordering below -550°C it was not sufficient to suppress ordering of the type FeAl in the temperature range -650" to 800°C. However, ordering during the quench is easily recognized since the FeAl phase formed during holding at temperature rapidly develops large antiphase domains whereas FeAl formed during quenching has a very fine domain size, -50Å diam. Each symbol in Fig. 2 indicates the result of a micro-structural examination of specimens heat-treated (-1 hr) until equilibrium was established. The results will be discussed in the order of the points, A - Dl marked on both diagrams with reference to the phase fields, critical temperature, and "transition" ranges, respectively. The dark-field micrograph corresponding to point A is shown in Fig. 3 and was obtained using a 111 reflection of the Fe3A1 structure which reveals both a&apos;/4<111> and a&apos;/2<100> antiphase domain boundaries.10 The structure observed in this specimen is typical of single-phase Fe3A1 and shows no evidence for FeAl or any other additional phase. The dark-field micrograph shown in Fig. 4 corresponds to point B on the two diagrams. AT the Annual Meeting of the A.1.M.E. last February, Cornelius F. Kelley, chairman of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., was presented with the Charles F. Rand Memorial Medal for "conspicuous success as administrative head of great enter- prises engaged in the production of nonferrous metals at home and abroad; for inspiring leadership of an organization that has trained able engineers for service wherever ores are mined and metals are recovered; and for enhancing the prestige of metal mining in the financial and industrial world." Mr. Kelley&apos;s acceptance speech follows: I am not unmindful of the fact that the distinction is not to be considered a personal one, but that by the language of the citation itself it is rather a recognition of the service that has been performed by the many trained men of an industrial organization that in the arts of mining and metallurgy and in the fabrication of metal products has performed a distinct service to the industry and to mankind. In that spirit, the award is accepted, and on behalf of the organization I represent and myself, I thank you and assure you that the honor is deeply appreciated.

Boron-doped p-type and arsenic-doped n-type source materials were used to deposit thin silicon films on amorphous fused quartz substrates by cathodic sputtering in argon atmospheres. All as-sputtered films were found to have high electrical resistivities of about 104 ohm-cm, despite controlled variation of the substrate temperature from 50O to 400°C. The high resistivity of the n-type films persisted even after postdeposition heat treatments as high as 1000°C, while p-type films showed a sharp decrease in re-sistivity to values on the order of 1 ohm-cm or lower after heat treatments above 650°C. X-ray and electron diffraction, together with transmission electron microscopy of the p-type films, revealed that the improved electrical properties resulted from two distinct processes. A primary crystallization or recovery within the pains, which were approximately 200Å diam in the as-sputtered films, accompanied the initial sharp drop in resistivity at 650°C. Following this process, a secondary recrystallization or discontinuous grain growth was nucleated in films heated at 1000°C. The resulting significantly increased size of certain grains and the corresponding decrease in grain boundary area accompanied an additional decrease in resistivity after heat treatment at 1000°C. The properties of thin silicon films are of interest because of their possible application in device technology. Although evaporated silicon films on amorphous substrates1-3 and both sputtered and evaporated germanium films4-&apos; have been studied in some detail, sputtered silicon films have not been widely investigated. It has been observed that evaporated silicon films deposited at substrate temperatures below approximately 600°C are amorphous.1,3,9,10 At substrate temperatures higher than this, the films are polycrys-talline, sometimes exhibiting a fiber texture with the fiber axis normal to the substrate surface.&apos; Similar results have been obtained with germanium films, although in this case the substrate temperature for the amorphous to crystalline transformation is reported to be as low as 150OC.5 The mechanism of film deposition by cathodic sputtering differs markedly from that of thermal evaporation. It might be expected, therefore, that the properties of sputtered and evaporated silicon films would also differ. The purpose of our study was to determine the effects of deposition conditions and heat treatments on the electrical resistivity, structure, and composition of thin silicon films sputtered on fused quartz substrates. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS Apparatus. A schematic diagram of the sputtering apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. The vacuum chamber was enclosed by an 18-in.-diam by 12-in.-high Pyrex bell jar mounted on a stainless-steel base plate. Access holes in the base plate were used to supply argon gas to the chamber, to allow for various electrical feedthroughs, and to provide mechanical motion to the shutter between the source material and substrate. The chamber was evacuated by a pumping system consisting of a 720 liter per sec oil diffusion pump backed by a 13 cu ft per min mechanical pump. Ultimate pressures of less than 1 x 10-6 torr could be achieved. The substrates were securely mounted on the stainless-steel substrate holder by quartz tabs held in place by stainless-steel screws. Temperatures of the substrate holder were measured by a thermocouple inserted within the holder. A quartz lamp was used to heat the holder and temperatures as high as 420°C could be maintained. Deposition Conditions and Procedure. The substrates used were polished fused quartz slides 116 by 1-12 by 3 in. and were outgassed at 200°C for 1 hr at a pressure less than 1 x 10-5 torr before film deposition. This was followed by a presputtering period of 2 hr during which the movable stainless-steel shutter was so positioned that deposition on the substrate was prevented. DeGolyer under date of Jan. 25. 1935. in which he discussed the possibility of modifying rather than discarding the Rule of Capture. He summarized his proposal as follows:

Kansas continued holding, for its seventh year, the fourth position in the list of oil-producing states. The crude-oil production, according to purchaser&apos;s reports to the State Corporation Commission, was 40,008,940 bbl.; as assembled by the Oil and Gas Journal, 41,305,768, and by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, 41,942,000 barrels. Increase of production from 1932 was largely due to greater stability of the industry, and increased return of demand for Kansas oil, caused by the addition of Federal assistance in national production regulation which reduced illegal production, of some areas out of Kansas, that had been destructively competing with Kansas crude or its refined products, at less than cost of production. Prices continued to advance from the lowest level of 25c per barrel during part of May and June, until by the end of September 36" gravity crude had reached $1 per barrel and continued at this price the remainder of the year. Price stability, for a period greater than in previous years, has brought renewed confidence to those producing oil and has led to renewed interest and increased purchases of Kansas leases. Drilling was confined chiefly to the number of wells necessary to protect from offset and other drainage in the field and to meet the requirements of expiring lease contract deeper areas in Mid-Continent, are an added inducement to exploration. The renewal of interest in the search for new fields in Kansas is already apparent and 1934 will probably see more wildcatting than for several years. This is due both to the expiration of leases on large blocks and to actual demand of the industry for new fields. Exploration for favorable areas is being actively conducted by the various methods of surface, subsurface and core drilling and geophysical work. Much of western Kansas cannot be mapped by surface study and geophysical exploration has been of considerable assistance and has led to a large use of the seismograph. Several companies are conducting seismograph surveys and leasing on findings already secured. Development under the more favorable conditions of 1933 can be readily seen by the comparison of the following reports for the last weeks of December in the respective years.

THAT bainite formed near the M, temperature bears a striking r esemblance to martensite tempered at the same temperature has been shown by the electron microscope.&apos; By means of electron diffraction,&apos; it has been established that carbide and cementite are present in bainite formed at 500°F (260°C); these carbides are also found in martensite tempered at 500°F (260°C).&apos; The investigation reported here is concerned with an X-ray study of the matrix phases in lower bainite and tempered martensite. These phases have turned out to be dissimilar in structure; the matrix of bainite is body-centered-cubic while that of tempered martensite is body-centered-tetragonal. A vacuum-melted Fe-C alloy containing 1.43 pct C was studied. Specimens of 16 in. diam were sealed in evacuated silica tubing and austenitized at 2300°F (1260°C) for 24 hr. One specimen was quenched into a salt bath at 410°+7 °F (210°+4°C), held for 16 hr, and cooled to room temperature. The structure consisted of about 90 to 95 pct bainite, the re: mainder being martensite and retained austenite. A second specimen was quenched from the austen-itizing temperature into iced brine and then into liquid nitrogen. It consisted of about 90 pct martensite and 10 pct retained austenite. The latter specimen was tempered for 10 hr at 410°+2°F (210°+1°C). The specimens were then fractured along prior austenite grain boundaries (grain size about 2 mm diam) by light tapping with a hammer. Single aus-tenite grains, mostly transformed, were etched to about 0.5 mm diam and mounted in a Unicam single crystal goniometer, which allowed both rotation and oscillation of the sample. Lattice parameters were measured by the technique of Kurdjumov and Lyssak. This method takes advantage of the fact that martensite and lower bainite are related to austenite by the Kurdjumov-sachs orientation relationships Thus, the (002) and the (200) (020) reflections can be recorded separately, permitting the c and a parameters to be determined without interference from overlapping reflections. According to these findings, the matrix phase in bainite is body-centered-cubic and, within experimental error, has the same lattice parameter as ferrite (2.866A). On the other hand, martensite, tempered as above, retains some tetragonality, with a c/a ratio of 1.005t0.002. Most workers in the past have assumed that bainite is generated from austenite as a supersaturated phase, but the nature of this product has not been established. The question arises as to whether bainite initially has a tetragonal structure and then tempers to cubic, or if it forms directly as a cubic structure. If it forms with a tetragonal lattice, it might well be expected to temper to the cubic phase at about the same rate as tetragonal martensite. The martensitic specimen used here was given approximately the same tempering exposure, 10 hr at 410°F, as suffered by the greater part of the bainite during the isothermal transformation. About 50 pct bainite was formed in 6 hr at 410°F. On tempering at this temperature, martensite reduces its tetragonality within a few minutes to a value corresponding to 0.30 pct C.&apos; Further decomposition proceeds slowly, and after 10 hr the c/a ratio is still appreciable, i.e., 1.005. Thus, even if the bainite were to form as a tetragonal phase with a tetragonality corresponding to only 0.30 pct C, which might be assumed to coexist with e carbide, it would not be expected to become cubic in this time. It seems very likely, therefore, that bainite forms irom austenite as a body-centered-cubic phase and does not pass through a tetragonal transition. The carbon content of the cubic phase has not been determined, but it could easily be as high as 0.1 pct, within the experimental uncertainty of the lattice-parameter measurements. It has been postulated that retained austenite decomposes on tempering into the same product as martensite tempered at the same temperature. There is now considerable doubt on this point. The isothermal transformation product of both primary and retained austenite at the temperature in question here is bainite," and the present findings show that bainite and tempered martensite do not have the same matrix. In a recent paper the authors1 discussed the reactions to tempering of hypereutectoid steels quenched from 1000&apos; C., as revealed by studies on changes in hardness, electrical resistivity, coercive force and metallo-graphic charaeteristics. The data, which related specifically to tempering temperatures of 550°, 650" and 710" C., for varying periods up to 125 hr., permitted the following important conclusions: 1. The rate of softening of the steels at the temperatures examined differed markedly although the steels were of "similar" general chemical composition. 2. The temperature of maximum softening spread over a range from about 650" C, to the eutectoid inversion. 3. The divergence in behavior was ascribed, at least in part, to a profound difference in tendency to graphitization on annealing at sub-eutectoid temperatures. 4. The mode of spheroidization of the cementite, as revealed by metallographic studies, also varied considerably in the different steels. The purpose of the present investigation is to pursue further the study of the difference in behavior of the steels on tempering over a wider range of temperature. To this end the following features have received particular attention: 1. Comparison of temperatures of maximum softening of the various steels when the quenched samples were tempered for 5 hi. and for 75 hr. followed by furnace cooling and by quenching in water. 2. Deterrnirlation of the effect of quenching temperature, prior to tempering, on the rate of softening. Quenching temperatures of 1000" and 850" C. were used in the investigations. 3. The only fine coal washer with proved automatic controls, the feldspar jig is capable of good efficiencies even at low separating gravities, handles a variety of products, and treats 150 tph and over. IN continental Europe the feldspar jig is used almost exclusively for cleaning the fine sizes of coal; it operates with an artificial bed, made up generally of pieces of feldspar or of any other hard and heavy rock with good cleavages. A primitive form of this machine requiring close supervision was used in this country years ago, but output was small. The modern machines are generally air-pulsated Baum-type jigs, with capacities up to 150 tph, and treat sizes from % in. to 0, usually previously dedusted or deslimed. These jigs are equipped with very accurate and sensitive automatic controls insuring satisfactory operation even at low separating gravity and with feeds irregular in quality and quantity. This paper will deal more particularly with coal cleaning separation, but the technical studies apply equally to all minerals. Theory of the Feldspar Jig To understand fully the operation of the feldspar jig and to appreciate its potential value, it is necessary to measure and analyze the motion of small particles of various specific gravities, falling in various media, under various conditions. As no practical formulas were available for that purpose, the writer has developed new theories and established new sets of formulas, which cannot be demonstrated here. They are applicable to all minerals and to many problems of coal or mineral concentration. These formulas do not pretend to absolute accuracy, but results, tested by comparison with experimentally recorded data, are sufficient for practical purposes, as they give definite indications of trends, relative values, and order of magnitude of the many factors involved. For pulsating motions no earlier formulas are available. In the case of continuous currents or motions, such formulas as Rittinger&apos;s, Allen&apos;s, or Stokes&apos;, over a hundred years old, apply only to special shapes and sizes of particles, involve factors and coefficients difficult to measure or appreciate, and deal only with free motions. They are of little use in solving practical problems. Units used with the formulas presented here are in the CGS system. Lateral friction and suction have been taken into account according- to methods currently used in aerodynamics, and only hindered motion is dealt with. As the feldspar jig is primarily intended to create a fluid bed condition, the mixture of fluids and solids obtained is homogeneous, and the apparent specific gravity of the separating medium is calculated accordingly. For instance, if 20 pct of the volume is coal and shale, with an average of 1.60 sp gr, in a liquid of 1.10 sp gr, the actual specific gravity of the separating fluid is 0.80 x 1.1 + 0.20 X 1.6 = 1.20. The fundamental equations are as follows: The general motion of a particle falling in a medium of specific gravity equal to u, hindered motion. is dv/dt = g/Ls [ L (s-u) - u/g v2 [1] g = 981 cm per sec, acceleration of gravity, and L = thickness of the particle of specific gravity (s) and velocity (v). The initial acceleration dv/dt = g (1-u/s ) [2] is a function of the specific gravity of the particle, only for a given medium, and independent of its dimensions—an ideal separating condition. The terminal velocity Vt = gxL- (s-u)/u, [3] for a given value of u, is a function of s and L. Two particles, L, s, and L2 s2, are said to be equivalent if they have the same terminal velocity, and accordingly L1/L2=s2-u/s1-u. [4] Two such particles cannot be separated by continuous currents, in any concentrating device. With the increased demand for lightweight aggregate, such materials have been manufactured from slags, clays, slates and, to a minor extent, the refuse of coal preparation processes. The latter source is attractive due to current interest in eliminating air pollution and improving the unsightly appearance of refuse piles as well as potential economic advantages, if a satisfactory product can be manufactured. A study has been made relating the composition of coal refuse, expressed as washability data, and the properties of a resulting aggregate. Three different refuse samples (bituminous and anthracite) were separated at gravities ranging from 1.4 to 2.96. Their chemical composition was determined. Aggregates were prepared in the laboratory from these fractions before and after ashing, at temperatures between 1250&apos; and 1350°C. The specific gravity, expansion and compressive strength of the products were measured. The response of the refuse to bloat is related to the chemical composition of the ash to yield a glass of desirable viscosity and to the presence of a material which will form a gas in the appropriate temperature range. Carbonaceous material within the particle is a negative factor since after the glassy phase forms, oxygen cannot enter the mass thus inhibiting bloating. Precombustion of the refuse is also detrimental since it removes substances of gas-forming capability. The fraction sinking at 2.60 yielded an aggregate which had the lowest specific gravity, greatest expansion and greatest compressive strength. The purpose of this study was to seek and evaluate possible relationships between the composition of coal refuse, as expressed by washability data and factors affecting the production of a lightweight aggregate from refuse by bloating. The study was related to an intense program in the Department of Mineral Preparation at the Pennsyl- vania State University to study the possible elimination of air pollution from coal refuse fires by producing a low-carbon secondary refuse. Another phase of this program is considering possible uses of such a secondary refuse. Thus one study was to determine if a lightweight aggregate could be produced from this new refuse material and what effect the nature of refuse beneficiation would have upon the characteristics of a commercial aggregate product. It was hoped that these studies would assist in the design of a process and in establishing the optimum specific gravities at which refuse separation could be made in respect to the production of a low grade fuel from the float product and a raw material for lightweight aggregate from the sink product. The combination of producing a saleable low grade fuel and a lightweight aggregate, while at the same time minimizing disposal costs and air pollution contributions would be attractive to the coal mining industry. MECHANISM OF BLOATING Austin, Nunes and Sullivan,1 Ehlers,3 Everhart, 4 Riley7 and others, have stated that bloating is an expansion process in which two essential conditions exist simultaneously. These are: the development of a glassy phase over a relatively wide temperature range (the viscosity of this glassy phase plays a major role in the retention of the evolved gases) and the evolution of gases (SO2, SO3, CO2 and O2) from mineral decomposition in sufficient quantities at appropriate temperatures to form a cellular structure in the mass. Unless these two "type" reactions take place at the same time or in overlapping ranges of time and temperature, cellulation will not occur. In this event, the gas will escape or the melt will be too fluid to retain it; or if retained, the cells may be too large or the walls too thin for good strength in the product. The stages that occur when clays and shales are heated in an oxidizing atmosphere may be summarized as follows: 1) Drying and removal of free water to 200°C. 2) Absorbed water dehydration period (200 to 480°C). 3) Chemically-combined water dehydration period (480 to 700°C).

The two-phase flow of a drilling fluid in a diamond drill bit is investigated by deriving and solving the steady-state continuity and momentum equations. Parameters in this analysis are rotational speed of the bit, local rate of addition of drill solids, non-Newtonian nature of the drilling fluid and drilling rate. The describing equations relate the flow and pressure drop to the design characteristics of the bit. The equations are integrated numerically yielding the flow-rate pressure drop characteristics for the bit, flow distribution in the bit and velocity and static pressure as a function of position in each flow channel of the bit. Results are presented for a particular bit design. This paper shows that under normal drilling conditions certain parameters may be neglected in the hydraulic calculations for a diamond drill bit. Therefore, shortened forms of the equations presented can be used to fit the proper diamond bit to the drilling fluid hydraulic system. INTRODUCTION Like the conventional bit, the diamond drill bit is a key component in the circulating system of a well. The conventional rock bit is fitted to the circulating system by selecting the flow nozzles which provide the system with the proper flow-rate pressure drop relationship. Fluid behavior across the face of the diamond bit must be better understood so the bit can also be fitted to the circulating system. Data from field-operated diamond bits are presently available and do yield some information regarding the flow-rate pressure drop relationship. However, the number of factors affecting this relationship is quite large. Drilling parameters and conditions such as bit penetration rate, bit weight and rotational speed are important. Moreover, flow channels in the bit are part of the cutting head, and introducing drilled solids into the flow channels reduces the flow area, causes additional drag and influences the pressure drop. Many tests would have to be performed if field tests were required to study all parameters which might influence fluid behavior in the bit. A logical approach to this problem is to investigate analytically the fluid behavior in the bit, including parameters that are present under normal drilling operations. This approach, which seems to offer the best method for future studies, is presented in this paper. Following is the general procedure. 1. Equations describing the most general flow channel are written and include the addition of drilling solids (which is related to penetration rate), rotation of the bit, design parameters of the bit and non-Newtonian properties of the fluid. 2. A typical bit is designed and the bit parameters are substituted into the equations. 3. Parameters are assumed (penetration rate, rotational speed of the bit, mud weight, etc.). 4. The describing equations are numerically integrated to obtain the pressure drop across the face of the bit as a function of flow rate. 5. The pressure-drop contribution of each component (friction, acceleration, etc.) is obtained from the numerical solution, and those factors which largely influence the total pressure drop are identified. Classifying the drilling fluid is important in establishing the friction factor relationship since the frictional pressure losses are the main contributors to the total pressure drop. High-density drilling fluid is commonly assumed to be a Bingham plastic. 1-3 Govier4 presented a method for selecting a friction factor in the laminar flow region from the rheology properties of the mud and a modified Reynolds number. Metzner5 presented a criterion for selecting the friction factor in the turbulent flow region. The bit design used in conjunction with the solution of the equations has divergent flow channels. Stall, which is the backflow of fluid in the channels due to eddies that occur on the outer perimeter of the flow stream, can occur in these divergent channels (or diffusers). (communication to the Secretary*):—On close examination I think it will be found that the evidence by which Mr. Corson claims to have shown the inaccuracy of a statement I made a few years ago, is far from convincing. This statement is: "Hot work as such has no influence upon the structure of the metal. Indirectly, however, by retarding crystallization until a lower temperature is reached, it may influence its structure most decidedly ; but the same results could be accomplished by heat treatment alone, i.e., by re-heating the unworked metal to the temperature from which the worked piece was allowed to cool undisturbedly." H. A. BUEHLER, Rolla, Mo. -I consider the lead .and zinc deposits of the Mississippi Valley to be the result of descending waters. There are many features that we have not determined and yet when you see the general field relations, it seems to me that the cause and effect can be well explained by descending circulation. In the Joplin-Miami district, for instance, the ore deposits are connected with openings or with old cavity fillings which have a direct connection downward from the surface to practically 300 ft. In the Miami camp, in the western part of the field, some of the deepest orebodies are directly connected with water, channels; the same condition has been obvious and always present with the shallower ores. I speak of one deposit that I have examined more thoroughly than any other in that district, the Admiralty property, which contains large openings or caves at the deepest levels. It seems to me that waters which would pass upward through 1800 ft. of dolomite would be saturated with lime and magnesia so far as the carbon dioxide of those waters would dissolve them, and therefore, on
