THE seriousness of the present tin scarcity has stimulated large consumers of this vital metal to develop drastic conservation measures in order to extend the available supplies to cover the emergency period. By devising new soldering methods and alloys the Bell System has contributed a substantial share in the tin conservation effort, Fortunately, the changes, as far as can be determined now, have not introduced weakness into the soldered joints. Some of the new procedures were already in the process of development at the onset of the emergency, while others were devised under its stress. In some instances, the newly developed solders were found to be more difficult to use than the alloys previously available, and would not have been introduced under normal conditions. One major change made that previously had been under consideration will result in large savings of tin. Unless service difficulties are encountered, this modification gives promise of remaining after the emergency has passed. The change involves a reduction in the amount of solder placed on a wiped joint between the cable sheath and the sleeve. Instead of the customary full sized wiped joint, a wipe of fillet proportions is formed. Through this change, a solder saving of more than 60 per cent per joint can be realized. Plumbers and cable splicers for many years have joined lead pipes and cable sheath by a soldering process called "wiping." The name is an apt description of the operation. For a wiped joint, the sections to be united' are heated by molten solder poured over their surfaces, and the resulting semiliquid mass is manipulated by wiping with cloth pads to a well rounded symmetrical form like the one shown in Fig. I, The operation requires considerable skill on the part of the splicer and close control of the composition of the solder. At first consideration, the problem of tightness in such joints seems simple but experience shows that even under the best conditions the fissures frequently found in the solder occasionally link and form a path that allows leakage to occur. In telephone cables not maintained under gas pressure, such leaks permit the entrance of water, which wets the paper-covered conductors and thereby impairs the insulation value and causes service interruptions. By going to an extreme and wiping off all the solder in excess. of a fillet, it has been found that many causes of porosity are eliminated. Figs. 2 and 3 show cross sections of joints wiped in the old and the new ways. The saving in solder, and consequently in strategic tin, is evident. The field splicing forces find that joints are easier to make by the new method and are less likely to be porous. The metallurgical considerations that are responsible for the success of the fillet wipe are of interest. In his excellent book on the Principles of Flotation, Warkl makes the following significant statement concerning the theory of flotation: Two questions of first-rate importance must be considered . . . First, it must be decided whether the sulfide minerals require a collector in order that they may float, or whether as has been claimed, they possess an inherent float-ability and need no collector. Second, it must be decided whether the xanthate type of collector can react with or be adsorbed by the unchanged sulfide minerals themselves, or whether, as many claim, reaction with the collector is dependent upon initial oxidation of the mineral surface. In the theory of flotation there are no two questions of greater importance than these. Ravitz and Porter2 presented evidence that galena can be floated without a collector, and even without any reagent, provided oxidation products are thoroughly removed from its surface. They found also that thoroughly cleaned galena floated faster when xanthate was used than when a frother alone or no reagent was used, and that, without a collector, the recovery decreased gradually upon exposure of the mineral to air. Their work, however, has met with considerable criticism.l(127).3-6 This paper is presented to answer the objections that have been raised, and to present additional data that confirin their results. The apparatus used to provide oxygen-free conditions for flotation has been described in detail by Ravitz and Porter. An atmosphere of purified nitrogen was maintained within the apparatus; all water and solutions used were freed of dissolved air, and could be transferred where desired by the use of nitrogen Pressure; nitrogen was used as the gaseous medium for flotation. The flotation cell was essentially a glass cylinder 15 cm. long and 4.6 cm. in diameter. Near the bottom was sealed a fritted glass filter, which broke up the gas into small bubbles, and 6 cm. above this filter was a side arm through which the froth overflowed. The pulp was agitated by a glass impeller, which entered the cell through a mercury seal. For each test 17 grams of galena and 75 ml. of water were placed in the cell, after which the speed of the impeller and the rate of gas flow were adjusted. Water was added gradually during the test to keep the froth level at the proper height. The mineral was prepared and cleaned in the following manner. Exceptionally Pure galena was crushed by hand on a clean bucking board, screened to —I50+ 200 mesh, and deslimed on a 200-mesh sieve with a fine spray of water. It was then boiled on a hot plate for a number of hours with several changes of the desired cleaning solution, after which both the solution and the mineral were placed in the "mineral flask" of the apparatus. The cleaning solution was drained off, and the mineral was boiled with oxygen-free water

At the last meeting of the Institute, Mr. Per Larsson read a very interesting paper on the Chapin mine of Michigan, in which he described the systems of mining that had, at different times, been tried in that great ore-body, and especially the system now in use, which consists in working the ore out from the bottom upward in lifts. Shortly after that paper was written, but before it had been published, or that I had had an opportunity of reading it, I bad the pleasure of visiting the mine. At that time I was making a profes sional examination of a nnmber of the mines on theGogebic Range, and others in the Menominee region, Michigan and Wisconsin, and had occasion then, as during several previous visits, to study closely the methods and cost of mining in these districts. The method of obtaining the data on which this paper is based is explained in detail in the paper on Determination of Viscosity of Iron Blast-furnace Slags.' The work was made possible by a grant of funds from Engineering Foundation, and it gives the results now obtained, continuing the general subject of our previous work and reported in former papers2 The data experimentally obtained are in the form of a temperature-viscosity curve for any slag of particular composition. (See Fig. 1.) From these curves, the viscosity of a slag of a definite composition and at a definite temperature is taken off and is plotted on a plane triaxial diagram showing compositions of silica lime and alumina on a plane representing constant-magnesia content (Fig. 4). The temperatures at which these results were plotted are 1300°, 1350°, 1400°, 1450°, 1500°, 1550" and 1600" C. and since the constant magnesia plane sections were an even 1 per cent. magnesia apart, magnesia analyses not of even unit magnesia composition were projected to these even unit magnesia planes. For example, 1.78 per cent. magnesia and 2.35 per cent. magnesia were projected to the 2 per cent. magnesia plane. The triaxial diagrams on which this first plotting was made were drawn on celluloid sheets, a transparent material on which it was easy to draw. When all the experimental work was plotted on celluloid in this way, the sheets representing a definite temperature were stacked in the proper order and were examined by transmitted light. Where

ONE of the problems that confronts the chronicler of the Porphyry story is to determine the date from which Morenci should be regarded as one of the group. The mines have the distinction of being the first operated in Arizona for copper. A small smelter was in operation as early as 1873 and in the eighties two smelters accounted for a substantial production ranging from 3,000,000 to 6,000,000 lb. per year. The first concentrator was built in 1886, but the ores were principally oxidized, and direct smelting ore still supplied most of the production. As early as 1893, the mining of somewhat leaner porphyry ores, containing copper in the form of the sulphide mineral, chalcocite, was commenced; but these still were of comparatively high grade and the concentrators were plants of 100 to 400 tons daily capacity. Moreover, the backbone of operations was still the production of rich oxidized ores for direct smelting. They assayed 10 to 15 per cent copper and the sulphide milling ores assayed 3 to 4 per cent. A significant comment appears in the Copper Handbook for 1908. Speaking of the Arizona Copper Co., Ltd., which was to become the most important component of the present Morenci enterprise, the editor, Horace Stevens, says: "A tremendous amount of ore is in sight, ore reserves . . . being estimated at 10,370,600 tons . . . " It seems fair to infer from this that the property was not yet regarded as an immense low-grade mine, but that the copper content of perhaps 70 lb, to the ton made an ore of "medium " grade even according to the standards of the time. The possibility of using sodium sulfide slags to remove copper from ferrous alloys has been investigated by Jordan1 and by Langenberg.2, 3 In these studies, such slags were determined to be capable of removing copper and sulfur from the melt. The present work represents additional effort to clarify the effects of temperature on copper removal. The experiments were performed in a 17-lb induction furnace. Graphite crucibles contained the melts and kept the baths saturated with carbon. Temperatures were measured with a calibrated optical pyrometer and were controlled by manipulation of power input to the furnace. Estimated accuracy of temperatures in this investigation is ± 10°C (18°F) for measurements prior to slag additions, and + 20°C (36°F) after slag formation. The procedure consisted of melting 800 g of electrolytic iron. During this step, powdered graphite covered the exposed iron surface. After a predetermined temperature was reached, copper shot was added. A sample of the molten alloy for chemical analysis was then aspirated into a silica sheath. Next, a slag-forming mixture of sodium sulfite and graphite was added instantaneously to the melt. The sodium sulfite amounted to one-tenth the charge weight of iron; sufficient graphite was added to combine with oxygen in the sodium sulfite, assuming formation of carbon monoxide and reduction of the sulfite to sulfide. Subsequent to the slag addition, the molten alloy was sampled periodically, with the exception of heat A in which no intervening samples were taken between the slag addition and the end of the run. The iron was poured into a graphite mold, and the ingots sectioned and drilled for samples. Results of selected heats are presented in Table I. Analyses of samples drawn from the iron prior to slag addition are listed under zero time. Two samples from heat D were reported with copper contents greater than the initial concentration in the bath. Owing to the gradual but complete disappearance of slag during this heat, it is believed copper momentarily became more concentrated in the upper portion of the bath while reverting from the slag. This is the region from which samples were drawn. It should be noted that analysis of the ingot was equal to the copper content at the time of slag addition. The terminal temperatures of heats D and E, and the initial sulfur content of heat A are also to be noted. Because of the large temperature drop which occurred when slag was formed in heat D, power input to the furnace was increased in heat E after the slag addition, causing a higher terminal temperature. In heat A, the initial sulfur concentration was relatively high as compared to heats B through E owing to contamination by some slag remaining in the crucible from a previous heat. It is evident from Table I that copper was removed at the onset of slag formation. Roughly 30 pct of the copper was taken into the slag, with the exception of heat D, which had approximately 50 pct removed. For a comparatively short time of slag-metal contact, it appears that no gain is to be made in copper removal through use of high or low temperatures. If the slag initially formed remains in contact with the iron for an extended period, temperature has a marked effect upon copper removal, as can be seen by studying results for the two extremes in temperature. At about 1425°C, the copper level remained relatively constant after the initial removal by the slag. However, in the region of 1670°C, a definite reversion of copper occurred. Reversion was incomplete in heat D, and complete in heat E. The final temperatures of heats D and E differed by about 75°C. This temperature difference is thought to be the reason for only partial copper reversion in heat D. It is believed the effects of temperature noted above are related to the evolution of a white fume, which appeared in every run except heat A. (In the case of heat A, the fume was practically indiscernible.) After each slag addition, a yellow flame formed for about 5 sec. When the flame subsided, a white fume appeared. Upon contact with surrounding cooler surfaces, this fume deposited as a white solid. In the experiments made at 1425°C, evolution of fume continued unchanged to the end of the runs. However, heats D and E exhibited a different behavior. A very noticeable decrease in fume evolution from heat D was observed. Furthermore, this heat had much less slag remaining than did runs A through C when the experiments were terminated. No slag remained at the end of heat E; evolution of fume from this heat ceased prior to pouring. Spec-trographic analysis of the white deposit indicated sodium to be the major metallic element, with the maximum concentration of iron and copper as 0.1 and 0.01 pct, respectively. It is supposed the white fume observed in these experiments is principally sodium oxide (Na2O), formed by oxidation of sodium in the slag and subsequent sublimation. (Sodium oxide is a white to gray substance in the solid state; at 1275oC, it sublimes.4) According to this mechanism, elevated temperatures would accelerate removal of sodium from the slag, sulfur pickup by the

Instability effects in semicanductor devices have long been attributed to the motion of charges on or within oxide layers on the surface. These effects are of critical importance in metal-insulator-semiconductor MIS) field-effect devices. For this reason, the capacitance-voltage or the conductance-voltage characteristic of these devices can be used as a sensitive detector to study charge transport and polarization effects in the oxide or insulator. A review is given of the results of such studies of thermally grown SiO2 as well as of other insulating films of importance in silicon technology. Three types of effects are distinguished. The first of these is the drift of mobile cations within the dielectric, examples being thermally grown SiO, which is often contaminated with sodium ions, and a variety of other glasses in which the mobile ions are a part of the glass composition. The second effect is a dipole-type polarization which occurs in phosphosilicate glass films obtained by reacting P2O5 with thermally grown SiO2. The third effect involves the transfer of charges between the dielectric and the silicon electrode. This occurs in silicon nitride and other deposited dielectrics. It is concluded that MIS studies have provided a powerful technique joy the study of charge transport and polarization effects in insulating films. The knowledge gained from these studies has led to an understanding of surface effects on conventional transistors and diodes as well as making possible stable MIS transistors. THE metal-insulator-semiconductor field-effect transistor is conceptually the oldest type of active semiconductor device.' The earliest attempts at making this device were frustrated because of high surface state densities at the interface between the semiconductor and the gate insulation.' However, by using a silicon substrate with thermally produced silicon dioxide as the gate insulation, this problem was solved and metal-silicon dioxide-silicon devices with good characteristics were made as early as 1960. 3 Yet it was still over 5 years before these devices became a commercial reality. This delay was largly due, not to surface states, but to stability problems associated with polarization effects within the insulating layer which caused the threshold voltage of the device to drift under temperature and bias treatments. The solution to these problems has not only made possible stable MIS devices, but it has added immensely to our understanding of failure mechanisms in conventional bipolar transistors and has added to the reliability of ali types of planar devices. In this review, we shall first describe the effects of various types of polarization phenomena on MIS device characteristics. Then, since thermally grown SiO, is by far the most important insulator used in these devices, we shall review historically the type of instabilities which have been observed in thermal oxides, the attempts at understanding and eliminating them, and the present status of the problem. We shall then turn our attention to the various deposited insulators which have been used, including lead glasses, phosphosilicate glass, vapor-deposited silicon oxide, and silicon nitride. Interestingly enough, many of these materials show polarization effects which are quite different from those generally observed in thermally grown SiO2. THE EFFECTS OF POLARIZATION PHENOMENA ON MIS CHARACTERISTICS The simplest MIS device and the one which has been most frequently used in the study of polarization effects is the MIS capacitor. Two modifications of this structure with single- and double-layer dielectrics are illustrated in Figs. l(a) and (b), respectively. The capacitance of this structure as a function of voltage applied to the metal gate electrode is plotted in Fig. 2 for the case of an n-type silicon substrate. When the silicon surface is accumulated (positive bias) the measured capacitance is just that of the insulating layer C. When the surface is inverted (negative bias), the capacitance is that of the insulator and a silicon depletion layer in series CoCs/(Co + Cs). Indicated on the horizontal axis of Fig. 2 is the voltage VT at which the silicon surface becomes strongly inverted. This voltage corresponds to the threshold or turn-on

Rotary kilns are adaptable to many fuels, but this paper deals principally with the use of powdered coal. The observations and conclusions presented are based on rotary kilns used in the manufacture of basic refractories for steel furnaces. Solid fuels are pulverized for two principal reasons: (I) ease of control, and (2) rapidity of combustion. By the use of pulverized coal, the operator can increase or decrease the fuel supply by small increments and with very little time lag between the change of control and the resultant change in the flame. This is extremely important in this type of furnace, as the temperature range for maturing the clinker is very narrow. By fine grinding, it is possible to increase the rate of burning of the coal, thereby liberating great quantities of heat within a small space in a short time. Under given conditions, temperature is a measure of the heat liberated per unit of time. To attain the temperatures of 2950° to 3150ºF., which are encountered in the manufacture of various steel-furnace refractories, it is estimated that it is necessary to liberate 125,000 to 175,000 B.t.u. per cubic foot of the burning zone per hour. The manufacture of dolomitic refractories is a ceramic process and, as is true in most such processes, the material must be subjected to a certain critical temperature for a certain length of time in order to complete the reaction. If the time of reaction is reduced, the temperature must be increased; in other words, if the rate at which the material flows through the hot zone of the kiln is increased, the temperature of the hot zone must be increased to compensate for this shorter exposure to the flame. Firing with Pulverized Coal Fig. I is a line drawing of a rotary kiln with the attendant equipment indicated in their relative positions. The kiln proper consists of a sloping, refractory-lined steel tube rotating slowly about its longitudinal axis (0.75 r.p.m.), and is countercurrent in operation in that the raw feed is introduced at the stack end and gradually approaches the zone of highest temperature at the lower end, where the fuel is introduced. Before 1930, the usual method of firing a rotary kiln was to store the coal in the pulverized form and then feed from this storage to the kiln as needed. This proved unsatisfactory and dangerous because of dust explosions and the inability to obtain an even feed to the kiln caused by arching of the coal in storage and flooding of the coal feeders. In later years the practice has been to store the raw coal and grind it as it is needed. Such a layout is indicated in Fig. I. The coal is stored in bins, charged from the top and drawn from the bottom into recording scales and then into some type of unit pulverizer. There are a number of good pulverizers .on the market, each incorporating features that the manufacturer considers outstanding.

In a previous paper upon the enrichment of mineral veins by later metallic sulphides,? the writer has shown that certain masses of rich ores, such as are found in many mines, either near the water-line or as bonanzas in depth, are of secondary origin, and are due to a leaching of lean ore and the concentration of the material by reaction between the solution and the unaltered ore below. The geological and mineralogical evidence is believed to form an adequate basis for a chemical and physical explanation of the phenomenon. In the present paper the writer will give a brief synopsis of this theory, and will apply it more particularly to deposits of the precious metals, laying special emphasis upon the dependence of such enrichments upon the presence of iron sulphide (as pyrite, etc.) in the primary ore, and upon structural features which control the circulation of the enriching solutions below the water-level. It is believed that many, though not all, of the bonanzas arid pay-shoots of rich sulphide ores, especially those carrying gold and silver, which are encountered in ore-deposits, are of such secondary origin. Apparently it is essential that the occurrence and structural relations of such ore-masses should be understood, as the success of the mine is often dependent upon the finding and extraction of these ores. A legitimate deduction, too, is that such ore-deposits decrease in value With depth. COMMERCIAL steel sheet is prepared by a combination of hot and cold rolling and annealing. This treatment usually results in more or less pronounced anisotropy. The [ ] anisotropy may manifest itself both as preferred orientation and in the manner in which impurities, segregations, and the like, are aligned in the sheet. The type of preferred orientation and the organization of impurities or segregations may affect the elastic moduli, the yield strength, the tensile strength, and almost always the amount of ductility in different directions. In any case, the most important directions concerned in the anisotropy are along the rolling direction, along the width direction, and along the thickness direction. Considerable data exist on the anisotropy of sheet steel as demonstrated by conventional tensile tests; however, few attempts have been made to measure the constants of plastic anisotropy and use them to describe the flow of anisotropic sheet under combined stresses. [ ] In this paper, evidence is presented indicating that plastic flow in anisotropic sheet can be described by the shear-strain energy flow theory provided that the anisotropy is properly taken into account. MATERIALS USED IN THE INVESTIGATION Table I lists the sheet materials used in this investigation and describes the condition in which materials were tested. DESCRIPTION OF TESTS AND TEST METHODS Two types of tests were run-tensile tests and hydraulic-bulge tests. Characteristic parameters of anisotropy were determined from the tension tests by methods which will be described later. One gentleman went. so far as to offer one hundred dollars an acre for any land in West Virginia that contained a seam or vein of even a single foot in thickness, and when shown the ore he acknowledged that it was genuine, but declared it had been imported. That black band does occur in West Virginia is to-day well known to a number of persons. There is a seam on the Gauley River of about a foot in thickness of good ore, which I understand Mr. Lewis and others are making preparations to work. The great trouble with black band ores as heretofore found in this country has been their limited extent. At Fort Washington, for instance, they had a very fine show ing of ore, but it soon gave out. It has also been asserted that the black band ores of the Western Coal Measures were worthless in the furnace, and Fort Washington has been pointed out as an example of the fate of any one who should undertake to work them. But they have been successfully worked at Youngstown and in other parts of' Ohio, and I am assured by old furnace-men from Ohio that there is not the slightest difficulty in. working them if properly managed. THe value of any particular ore, coke, or limestone, for iron-making, depends upon its effect, first, upon the quality or value of the resultant product; and second, upon the cost of smelting. The factors under the first head are the percentages of phosphorus, manganese, and other elements, which remain in the pig-iron ; while those under the second head are the percentages of iron, carbon, or lime, the slag-forming constituents, which must be fluxed, and any other ingredients which give rise to variations in cost of fuel and flux. The first of these criteria of value is perhaps not capable of being reduced to a general formula embracing all cases, since it must vary to a great extent with market-fluctuations. For example, Bessemer pig is worth sometimes more and sometimes less than foundry-pig; and the premium paid for high manganese varies within wide limits. The second, or smelt-ing-value, however, can be expressed numerically with a fair degree of accuracy; and it is with this phase of valuation that the present paper is concerned. The utility of a means of comparing numerically the relative smeltiug-values of difierent ores, cokes, and limestones, is self-evident, although it may not have importance in Northern practice, where materials are largely standardized. On the other hand, there are, especially in the South, many furnace-managers who must use a great variety of materials of widely varying grade; and it is with special reference to this district, and in connection with the efficiency-methods which I have elsewhere proposed,' that the methods herein described were devised.

Attempting to analyze a 25-year forecast after less than a third of the time has elapsed may seem premature. The President's Materials Policy Com- mission's report necessarily painted with a broad brush and made no claim for pinpoint accuracy in its predictions. More importantly for present purposes, it made no attempt to predict the detailed courses of production and consumption during the period forecasted. Several statistical highs and lows may very well lie between now and 1957, so comparing recent figures with points taken from the report on a straight-line basis would be illogical. Moreover, the report assumed that the general trend of consumption-domestic and foreign-would be upward. Contrarily, domestic figures were lower in 1957 than in 1950. Therefore, to project curves from 1950 through 1957 leads to conclusions that are probably false. Many in the industry would feel more uncertain about forecasting 1975 domestic conditions now than they would have been in 1950, even though nearly a third of the 25 years has elapsed. In making comparisons, several statistical problems are encountered. The Paley report figures for 1950 were estimated in several cases and corrected figures vary as much as 10 pct. For example, the report placed 1950 lead consumption at 800,000 tons, whereas actual consumption was 885,000 tons. Obviously, in comparing more recent figures with the report's projections, adjustments must be made for positions taken in error from the start. Over the long pull, such discrepancies will probably be insignificant, but they must be noted in comparing short-term changes.
