Subsidence has occurred in several areas of the upper Gulf Coast region of Texas, although in most cases this is not evident without precise instrumental leveling. As referred to in this report, the region comprises about 7200 sq miles of the Gulf Coastal Plain and includes all or parts of the following counties: Harris, Fort Bend, Waller, Brazoria, Galveston, Liberty, Chambers, Orange, and Jefferson (Fig. 1). Topographic relief is low, ranging from sea level at the Gulf of Mexico to 300 ft or more in northwestern Harris County. In this upper Gulf Coast region, which embraces the most heavily populated and industrialized parts of Texas, industrial and municipal water supply is obtained chiefly from wells. Largest center of ground-water withdrawal is the Houston-Baytown area, where about 200 million gallons per day was pumped in 1956 for municipal and industrial use. Other large centers of ground-water withdrawal include the Alta Loma sector and the heavily industrialized Texas City area in Galveston County, where about 23 mgd was pumped in 1956. In the Freeport area in Brazoria County about 6 mgd was pumped in 1956 for city and industrial supply. In addition to withdrawals in metropolitan districts, great quantities of ground water are supplied by irrigation wells to thousands of acres of rice. These wells are widely dispersed over many miles, principally in Harris, Waller, Fort Bend, Brazoria, and Liberty counties, and effects of pumping are not so readily noticed as in the industrial and metropolitan sectors. Subsidence: Starting with the 1905-1906 line from Smithville, Tex., to Galveston, the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey has extended a network of first and second-order level lines throughout the upper Gulf Coast region. In 1918, when a line was run from Sinton, Tex., to New Orleans, La., a tie was made to the 1905 leveling at Houston. In 1932-1933 a line was run from Palestine, Tex., to Houston, and a good deal of leveling was carried out in the vicinity of Houston. At this time the entire network was adjusted to the Sea Level Datum of 1929. In 1935-1936 and 1942-1943 several new lines were run and considerable releveling was performed. Supplementary adjustments were made after both the 1936 and 1943 levelings in order to reduce the elevations to the Sea Level Datum of 1929. These adjustments probably masked some of the subsidence that had occurred up to that time, although a certain amount of subsidence was noticed in the 1943 leveling. When several lines in the vicinity of Houston and Galveston were releveled in 1951, the regional nature of the subsidence became apparent.' Direct comparison with the 1943 leveling was possible because the datum was not changed. Comparisons with prior leveling were unreliable because of differences in the early and subsequent datums. In 1953-1954 many lines in the region were re-leveled and in 1957 the entire network, including the elevations previously determined, was readjusted to determine the changes in elevations as indicated by various levelings between 1905 and 1953-1954. In this instance the adjusted elevations were held fixed near the boundaries of the region where the bench marks seem to have remained stable. The only sea-level connection held fixed was the connection of the 1905 leveling to the 1903-1906 tidal series at Galveston. Almost the entire region has been at least slightly affected by the subsidence, some areas to a great extent. The profiles of subsidence (Fig. 2) and the map showing the contours (Fig. 3) illustrate both regional and local changes. A large area of subsidence is centered in the Houston-Baytown district, where the maximum recorded is about 2.7 ft between 1905 and 1954. This probably falls short of the actual maximum, since land surface subsided as much as 2.5 ft in the industrial section alone between 1943 and 1954. Sub-

Two Opposed Interpretations of the Tonopuh Structure.—The important geological publications concerning the Tonopah min-ing-district are those of Spurrl aud of Burgess.² In these publications are presented fundamental differences of interpretation, which are the more interesting because both authorities have had ample opportunity for observation, and because both are geologists of proved ability. I was vastly puzzled to know which had the better of it, and in order that I might reach a conclusion in my own mind, I recently spent some time in the district going over the physical evidence. Surprising as it may seem, this evidence looks conclusive. A review of it will, I believe, be of interest to those who are familiar with the previous publications. The general geological features of Tonopah are shown in Fig. 1, and the differences of interpretation referred to are outlined in the accompanying notes. Brieflyj Burgees regards the various rocks as flows, lying in the order of their deposition. Spurr regards them in part as flows, and in part as flat-lying intrusives. The disagreement, then, concerns the rocks regarded on the one hand as intrusives, and, on the other hand, as flows. These rocks are chiefly the so-called calcitic andesitc, the upper rhyolite, and the lower rhyolite. The shapes and positions of X-ray reflections from specimens of copper, steel, and aluminum alloy haue been examined in the elastic and plastic ranges both while the specimen was under stress and in the unloaded condition. For the aluminum alloy the shape was unaltered by the application of stress either within the elastic limit or in the plastic range provided that no additional plastic strain was induced. In copper the broadening accompanying plastic deformation was very slightly reduced when the specimen was unloaded. A similay but more marked elastic component of broadening was also found for steel, but in this case below the yield stress. Line profiles corrected for instrumental and particle-size broadening indicate very large internal stresses in local regions of the plastically deformed metals. The results are discussed in terms of a recent suggestion that the heterogeneous dislocation distribution between the cells and their boundary walls plays a major role in the peak shifts and broadening of the X-ray reflections. STUDIES of the X-ray line profiles from strained polycrystalline aggregates concentrate usually on one or the other of two main parameters: a) the displacement of the peak of the intensity contour from its position for a strain-free aggregate, or b) the shape of the profile. From peak shifts data can be obtained either on the relation in both the elastic and plastic ranges between applied external stress and average lattice strains in a given (hkl) direction, or, alternatively, on the residual lattice strains which are present after a plastically deformed specimen is unloaded.' On the other hand, the shapes of the broadened profiles from cold-worked metals can be analyzed to separate the broadening produced by small particle size and by heterogeneous lattice strains.' In this paper the terms "size broadening" and "strain broadening'' are used in the general sense adopted by warren.' In the past, apart from two early qualitative observation, it has been customary to examine only the movements of the peaks of the profiles while the specimen is actually under load, since the line broadening induced by plastic strain remains after removal of the external stress. Consideration of the implications of existing data of this type suggests, however, that fruitful additional information on a number of fundamental aspects might be gained by careful examination of whether the X-ray line profile is in fact different in the loaded and unloaded states of the specimen. By taking advantage of the sensitivity and convenience of modern diffractometer techniques it is possible to explore with relative ease the magnitude and importance of any elastic effects which may be superimposed upon the well-known permanent changes in profile. The main aim of the work to be described was thus to investigate this point for typical metals and alloys. For this purpose annealed specimens were extended first elastically and then plastically and the positions and shapes of X-ray reflections were recorded. Initially it was anticipated that prime interest would center on observations within the plastic range; it has been found, however, that small changes in profile sometimes occur both before and after the nominal elastic limit of the material is reached. It is shown that the results obtained have important implications in relation to the structural changes and processes associated with deformation. I) EXPERIMENTAL To enable the diffraction lines to be recorded while the specimen was under uniaxial-tensile stress, a small hydraulic testing machine was designed and constructed for direct attachment to the goniometer of a Philips diffractometer. The specimens, which were machined from 1/2-in.-diam rod and had a central rectangular section 3/8 by 1/16 in. over a gage length of 1 in., were held in the machine by split collets mounted in grooves in the cylindrical ends of each specimen. No special precautions were taken to ensure precise axiality of loading. Constant oil pressure was maintained by a lever and weights system and transmitted to the loading rig by flexible pipe. The actual load on the specimen was measured by a load cell in the machine to an accuracy of * 1 pct. To enable smooth X-ray profiles to be obtained the specimen and machine were oscillated continuously during recording through *7-1/2 deg about the normal half-angle position of the goniometer. The three materials chosen for the investigations were high-purity copper as representative of a ductile fcc metal, a low-carbon steel for a bcc metal, and an aluminum alloy as a material in which the proof stress/ultimate strength ratio is high. The disposal of phosphatic clays has presented a problem to the phosphate industry since the mining of phosphate rock first began in Polk County. As the flotation process was introduced in the late 1920's the problem of clay disposal was increased significantly since clay is present in proportionally greater quantities in reserves yielding flotation concentrates. Because of their physical character and the tremendous surface area per unit volume, these clays have the characteristic of retaining large volumes of water as they are slurried during processing. The disposal of clay and the recovery of a portion of the water require settling areas with a capacity ranging up to 2 cu ft for each cubic foot of phosphate matrix mined. According to a recent study by the Bureau of Mines, the average cost for disposal of these wastes is 24.5[c] per ton of product. This is a major cost of phosphate rock production.

National Minerals Advisory Council A meeting of the National Minerals Advisory Council on August 3rd in Washington, D. C., indicated the vitally important part that the mining industry is to play in the mobilization program. Director James Boyd of the Bureau of Mines told the Council that the Department of the Interior would review the recommendations of all the Council's commodity committees with regard for mobilization planning in the light of the changed international picture. The Council was requested to reactivate its commodity committees and have them gather all available data on supplies, their sources and availability and present and potential production of the minerals and metals represented on each committee. Data on labor, machinery, transportation, automotive and stationary equipment, power, fuel, lumber, water supply are a few of the important items called for in the reports, which are to be presented at a meeting of the Council on September 1 at Salt Lake City. The material in the reports will become the basis for discussing metal and mineral requirements at that time. Discussion at the meeting bared several $64 questions, probably the most important of which are the following: 1. Which of the war-essential metals and minerals and in what quantities can we reasonably expect to get them from abroad under threat of submarines? 2. How are we going to meet the manpower problem posed by (a) migration of labor from mining to manufacturing since the end of World War II and (b) the draft and the calling up of reservists? Opinion was expressed by industry spokesman at the meeting that the function of complying with mobilization requirements be left to those in the industry itself; that is, those having the "know how." This view contended that any administrating governmental agency should be kept as small and streamlined as possible. There was general sentiment against the reactivation of the wartime Premium Price Plan or other bonus plans as a stimulus to production. The thought was emphasized that what was needed was a change in the basic conditions which have fostered the decline in domestic mining activity in the postwar years. One such condition, long overdue for correction, is the tax structure as it applies to mining enterprises. Many quarters both in industry and in government favor tax relief along the lines suggested in the six tax recommendations by the Council to the Secretary of the Interior last December. The Council adopted a resolution expressing a feeling that the following tax recommendations are still feasible and desirable and will accomplish as much toward increasing exploration for new deposits (thereby subsequently increasing production) as will government loans for exploration: (1) Losses from unprofitable ventures should be allowed corporations, partnerships, or individuals as ordinary deduction against current income. (2) Development costs after discovery should be recognized as operating expenses. (3) Allowance for depletion should be made to the stockholder as well as to the corporation. (4) Income should not be taxed without full allowance for losses of loss years. (5) Adequate allowances for percentage depletion should be made. A discussion of the manpower problem led to the Council's acceptance of a resolution advising that "military authorities should proceed with caution in depriving the mining and metallurgical industry of its manpower." The resolution strongly urged that no personnel "directly engaged in exploration, development, production or supervision (of strategic and critical materials) should be drafted for the armed forces, at least until the anticipated demands upon these producers are clarified." Stockpiles The Munitions Board's "Stockpile Report to the Congress" of July 23, 1950 revealed: (1) The total estimated value of the stockpile objective is $4,051,714,510 at the close of fiscal year 1950. (2) The total value of the stockpile on hand, at the close of fiscal 1950 was $1,556,154,352 or 38.4 pct of the total stockpile objective. An additional $494,948,060 was on order, making a total of 50.6 pct on hand plus the amount on order. (3) Materials obtained for the stockpile by the ECA from January to June 1950 amounted to $13,112,085, while development projects by ECA during this period involved the expenditure of $9,322,000, mainly with counterpart funds. Shortly after the start of the Korean conflict it was felt that Congress ould appropriate greatly increased sums for the purchase of materials for the stockpile. This stimulus to the program may increase the dollar earnings of those European nations that are present or potential contractors in our stockpiling program. Such a development would mean that these nations could add to their gold reserves, thereby stabilizing their respective economies and hastening recovery. This seems to be the picture for the next six months anyway. The "bug" appears when it is realized that the increased threat of total world war actually may retard recovery in Europe as nations on the continent may feel inclined to devote more of their resources to defense programs. Industries Essential to Defense The Department of Commerce in response to a request by the Department of Defense issued on August 3, 1950 a "Tentative List of Essential Activities" as a "guide for calling up for active duty members of the civilian components of the Armed Forces." The list includes the following: Primary Metal Industries. Included herein are establishments engaged in the smelting and refining of ferrous and nonferrous metals from ore, pig, or scrap. Metal Mining. This category includes establishments primarily engaged in mining, developing mines or exploring for metallic minerals (ores). This group includes all ore dressing and beneficiating operations. Anthracite Mining, Bituminous Coal and Lignite Mining, Crude Petroleum and Natural Gas Extraction, Mining and Quarrying of Nonmetallic Minerals, Except Fuels. Challenge to the Mining Industry The source of our country's great strength lies in its capacity to produce. In times of stress such things as national morale and manpower are all-important but without a capable industrial machine we would be helpless. That machine must be fed with minerals and metals in order to generate and maintain momentum sufficient to insure success. Consequences of the lack of adequate supplies of essential metals and minerals to increase and sustain our industrial power are not pleasant to contemplate. It is absolutely imperative that we put forth Herculean effort to guarantee ample supplies of such essential materials as copper, lead, zinc, manganese, antimony, mercury, tungsten, tin, chromite, nickel, cobalt, iron ore and rubber. The mining industry faces a challenge more serious than ever existed before in the history of our country. The industry must be equal to the task.

RECENT interest has been shown in utilizing solid-state techniques for obtaining large oriented grains in the Alnico Alloys.1-4 Unfortunately, due to the inherent brittleness of these materials it is difficult to introduce sufficient imperfections by deformation to support the nucleation and growth of new, recrystallized grains. As a result, recrystal-lization methods for obtaining large grains, such as the strain-anneal technique, do not appear to be feasible. Steinort et a1.2 used a combination of a thermal gradient and internal strains to obtain large single crystals of Alnico 5 from a poly crystalline casting by annealing at temperatures above 1200°C. It was suggested that the strains were the result of the precipitation of the y phase which exists between -850° and 1200°C. This paper describes the process used for cobalt purification and recovery at the AMAX Nickel Refining Co. plant In Port Nickel, Louisiana In the first stage, cobaltic precipitate produced in the Outokumpu electrolytic nickel cobalt separation process is dissolved using methanol and sulfuric acid liquor produced in this step is converted to an ammoniacal complex, and sufficient ammonium sulfate is added to facilitate cobalt oxidation to cobaltic pentammine Nickel is then selectively precipitated as nickel-ammonium sulfate double salt at pH 2 5 Final purification of the pentammine liquor is effected by pH adjustment with ammonia and removal of divalent nickel by ion exchange Purified liquor is then advanced to hydrogen reduction to produce cobalt metal Although similar to other cobalt refining processes used in the nickel industry, the Port Nickel process is unique because of a single point chemistry adjustment for a number of unit operations that occur in succession.

For his achievement in building the Panama Canal, Major-Gen. George W. Goethals was presented, on May 22, the John Fritz medal, the highest mark of distinction in the engineering profession. In the absence, in Europe, of Clemens Herschel, chairman of the Board of Award, Charles F. Rand presided over the meeting. Col. John J. Carty, who was chairman of the Board of Award at the time the medal was awarded to Gen. Goethals, and who ordinarily would have presented the medal, was detained in Paris by Government work, so the presentation was made by Ambrose Swasey. When calling the assembly to order, the Chairman said: This medal has been awarded by a Board representing four of the National Engineering Societies: American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and American Institute of Electrical Engineers. The medal was established in 1902, in honor of that great American engineer, John Fritz, and has never been awarded except to very distinguished men. In. 1902, the first award was made to John Fritz for scientific and industrial achievement. In 1905, to Lord Kelvin for his work in cable telegraphy and other scientific attainments. In 1906, to George Westinghouse for the invention and development of the air brake. In 1907, to Alexander Graham Bell for the invention and introduction of the telephone. In 1908, to Thomas A. Edison for the invention of the duplex and quadruplex telegraph, the phonograph, the development of a commercially practical incandescent lamp, the development of a complete system of electric lighting, including dynamos, regulating devices, underground system protective devices and meters. In 1909, to Charles T. Porter for his work in advancing the knowledge of steam engineering and in improvements in engine construction. In 1910, to Alfred Noble for notable achievements as a civil engineer. In 1911, to Sir William H. White for notable achievements in naval architecture. In 1912, to Robert W. Hunt for his contributions to the early development of the Bessemer process. In 1914, to Professor John E. Sweet for his achievements in machine design. In 1915, to Dr. James Douglas for notable achievement in mining, metallurgy, education, and industrial welfare. In 1916, to Dr. Elihu Thomson for achievement in electrical invention, in electrical engineering and industrial development, and in scientific research. In. 1917, to Dr. Henry M. The measurement of interfacial teusions or grain boundary energies in metals is an important metallurgical problem, especially since it bears on growth and nucleation processes. Statistical methods of measuring equilibrium grain boundary angles, which relate interfacial tensions, have been used by some investigators1'2 but more direct methods would be preferred. A direct way, based on a simple extension of a successful method of growing single crystals of silicon ferrite to predetermined orientations in flat specimens,3 is to produce three-grain specimens in such a way that the equilibrium common grain boundary will be perpendicular to the surface of the specimen. The angles to be measured then appear as the grain boundary angles in the surface of the specimen. The method of producing a single crystal specimen with a predetermined orientation is basically the same as that employed by Yoshida and Fuji-wara4 in their work on aluminum wires. The specimen, prior to any single crystal transformation, must have a matrix which will support the growth of a crystal of the desired orientation. Growth may occur through exaggerated grain growth or, if the matrix is strained a critical amount. by normal recrystallization. In either case the matrix must have stability at the temperature used to effect the transformation, this stability appearing as a long induction period for exaggerated grain growth or for the formation of recrystallization nuclei. Additional control is gained by using a high temperature gradient through which the specimen is moved at a suitable rate. To obtain the desired orientation, the specimen is fed a short way into the furnace producing one or more crystals in the hot end. After the specimen is removed from the furnace, the orientation of a crystal is determined, so that this crystal may be reoriented by properly deforming a narrow piece of the matrix between the end crystal and the rest of the specimen. This part of the specimen in the case of silicon ferrite is preferably held at red heat during the reorienting process. Fig 1 shows a specimen which is ready to be transformed into a single crystal through growth of a reoriented "seed" crystal. When the method just described is applied to the production of a three-grain specimen two crystals are grown first side by side in one end, the specimen is then reversed and the third grain grown from the opposite end. A suitable group of grains each of different orientation is one where all three grains have the same crystallo-graphic plane in the plane of the specimen. Fig 2 shows a photograph of a three-grain group prepared as described. The notches are introduced in the open ends of the grain boundaries to anchor them during the final annealing operations which ultimately should bring the grain boundaries to the lowest energy configuration. Two-grain groups with different crystallographic planes in the plane of the specimen can be similarly prepared and treated. If the two grains have different surface (gas to metal) energies per unit area, the equilibrium condition leads to a curved grain boundary.* * This feature of the problem was pointed out by J. c. The Chivor emerald field is situated on the eastern slope of the Andes in the Department of Boyach, at an elevation of about 8000 ft. above sea level. It overlooks the Llanos (plains) of the Orinoco and is watered by many streams flowing into the Rio Meta, the Orinoco's largest tributary. The Rio Meta is navigable from the Orinoco to a point within about 50 miles of the Chivor district and may eventually prove to be the reasonable outlet for the future development of this part of the country. The topography of the district is extremely rugged and mountainous (Fig. I), the difference in elevation between two points on a mining claim 1 km. square being sometimes as much as 4000 ft. The ground is covered with dense forest growth and the available timber is suitable and sufficient for mining purposes, but it is becoming gradually depleted by Indian clearings as the country around the mines becomes settled. The many streams combined with the rough topography give good possibilities for hydroelectric power. The center of population nearest to Chivor is Bogoth, the capital of the republic and a city of some 300,000 inhabitants; the distance is two and one-half days' travel. The first stage of the journey from BogotB is accomplished by rail to Choconta, some 4 hr. travel. From Choconth the journey is made in the saddle, one night being spent in Guateque. The latter is a small town and the nearest post office to the mines, being some 10 hr. ride distant. The roads are mere bridle paths, in parts hazardous and almost impassable in the wet season. All supplies brought to the mines, other than those produced locally, are carried by pack mule; mule freight from Choconth costs 3 centavos1 per pound. The climate of the Chivor district is healthful and bracing. The wet season begins in March and concludes in November, the remaining months being dry. The annual precipitation is about 130 in. The temperature throughout the year is nearly constant, varying from about 45" F. to about 65" F. shade temperature. The rains are cold and unpleasant, and for the greater part of each day in the wet season the country is shrouded in dense mist. The so-called "paraffin dirt" of the Gulf Coast oil fields has been considered an indication of the possible presence of oil and gas, and not a few wells have been brought in solely on the basis of such evidence. In a sense, it may be empirically justified as evidence of the presence of oil or gas, though it cannot be said to be infallible. If the writer is correctly informed, its association with oil and gas was pointed out by Lee Hager some years ago, and while it is commonly mentioned by geologists and operators in conversation, no discussion seems to have found its way into print. The present interpretation is based on laboratory study rather than on field investigation, and is put forth with the hope of stimulating discussion which shall lead to more complete understanding. The term "paraffin dirt" has been applied to soils with a peculiar texture, which has been described as "curdy" or "rubbery." When moist, the material breaks much after the fashion of "green" cheese. It is rubbery under compression, but does not resemble rubber in tenacity or cohesion. When dry, the material ranges from hard clods to a horny mass of high tensile strength. The shrinkage in drying is very great, especially in the hornlike matter. The moist material ranges in color from dark brown in the specimens rich in organic matter to grayish in specimens containing more inorganic matter. All of the specimens studied were readily attacked by molds, which in some cases grew in great profusion on the samples. Samples exhibited a rather characteristic "swampy" or "mucky" odor when wet, and a characteristic odor of humic soils when moist. If the material is brought into suspension in water, very fine sand settles out and may be recovered by successive washing and decantation. The sand is almost entirely quartz, but contains occasional fragments of feldspar—more or less kaolinized and iron-stained. Practically all of the sand passes through a 100-mesh screen and the grains are extremely sharp —possibly below the limit of rounding. A flocculent mud, of clay and organic matter, remains in suspension for days. Some material is taken into solution in the water, imparting a slight tendency to froth when vigorously shaken. The results of partial analyses of four samples of "paraffin dirt," and, for comparison, one of a coastal plain soil are given in Table I.

PYROPHYLLITE is a hydrous aluminum silicate (A12Si4O10(OH)2)1 that occurs in both the foliated and the massive forms. The foliated variety resembles talc in that it has a greasy feel, a pearly luster, perfect basal cleavage, and usually is white, although in some deposits apple green, gray, brown, russet, and nearly black specimens may be found. The massive deposits of pyrophyllite yield pearl gray to light tan aggregates, some of which are so friable that they may be crushed with the hands into a fine gritty powder. Frequently specimens of the massive variety are studded with crystals of radial structure. The mineral has a specific gravity of about 2.7 and a hardness of 1 on Mohs' scale.1 The chemical composition of commercial pyrophyllite reflects the mineralogy of the deposits, which, according to Stuckey,2 contain pyrophyllite and quartz, together with chloritoid, sericite, and a few other minerals of negligible importance. The latter, he says, "are noticed in but small quantities to the extent they might occur as accessory constituents of an igneous rock or as products of regional metamorphism or weathering. . . . Quartz is abundant everywhere except in the very best grades of pyrophyllite." Analyses of specimens from several deposits are listed in Table 1, showing that the silica content varies from 57 to 73 per cent and the alumina from 22 to 33 per cent. Oxides of iron and the alkaline metals are collectively present, with one exception, to an extent of about 1 to 1.5 per cent. SOURCES At present, North Carolina is the only commercial source of pyrophyllite, although the mineral has been found in small quantities in many parts of the world. A new classification of eutectics is proposed, based on tlze entvopies of wzelting of the tuio eutectic phases. The clnssification was used to predict suitable tvansparent analogs of the metallic systems. Experimental confir?nation loas obtained for the theovetical shape of the lamellar solid-liquid interface, fov the fault mechanisms of lanzellar spacing changes, and for the development of low-energy solid-solid boundaries between the lamellae. An explanation is presented to account jov the irvegular and coinplex regular structures zrhich are found in some eritectic systems. FrOM experimental observations, single-phase materials can be divided into two groups according to their solidification characteristics, those that grow as faceted crystals and those that do not. acksonl' showed from thermodynamic reasoning that the type of growth depended on a factor a which was almost thg entropy of melting. Most nonmetals have high entropies of melting (a greater than 2) and grow with crystalline facets. Most metals have low entropies of melting (CY less than 2) and grow almost isotropically with no facets. The authors propose that eutectics may be classified in a similar manner. There are three groups of eutectics, those in which both phases have low entropies of melting, those in which one phase has a high and the other phase has a low entropy of melting, and those in which both phases have high entropies of melting. Lamellar or rodlike structures are formed in systems in which both phases have low entropies of melting. In these alloys dendrites of either phase may be formed, when the alloy is rich in the relevant component. Examples are Pb-Sn, Sn-Cd, Pb-Cd, Sn-Zn, Al-Zn. Irregular, Fig. 14((), or complex regular, Fig. 14(b), structures are formed in alloys in which one phase has a high entropy of melting and the other has a low entropy of melting. Examples are A1-Si, Zn-MgzZnll, Pb-Bi, Sn-Bi. When the alloys are rich in the low entropy of melting phase, dendrites are formed; when the alloys are rich in the high entropy of melting phase, faceted primary crystals are produced. These crystals are sometimes called hoppers or pseudodendrites. In this work the term dendrite will only be used to describe nonfaceted primary crystals. Dendrites are not formed during solidification in high entropy of melting single-phase materials. The third group of eutectics includes alloys in which both phases have high entropies of melting. Each phase grows with a faceted solid-liquid interface. Since most metals do not have high entropies of melting, metallic examples in this eutectic group are rare. However they may occur between some intermetallics and semiconductors or semimetals such as silicon, germanium, and bismuth. Attempts have been made to study eutectic solidification visually by watching the growth process.374 Since metals are not transparent, the observations had to be made on external surfaces. This difficulty can be overcome by using transparent analogs of the metallic systems. As was mentioned earlier, most single-phase compounds have entropies of melting greater than 2 and so grow as faceted crystals. Recently organic materials with entropies of melting less than 2 were investigated.' These materials grow in exactly the same way as the low entropy of melting metals. When the materials are pure, they grow with a solid-liquid interface parallel to an isotherm; when they are impure, cells or dendrites are formed. Since these materials are transparent, have low melting points, and even have cubic structures, they should be ideal for making up transparent analogs of the metallic eutectics. The purpose of the present work was to investigate these organic eutectics and to see whether this quite different series of eutectics could be classified in the same way as the metallic systems. The observations made on the organic alloys are also discussed with reference to the current theories of lamellar growth. Explanations are proposed to account for the structures formed in the other eutectic groups. EXPERIMENTAL Thin cells containing the organic alloys were uni-direction ally solidified on a specially constructed microscope stage.' Uniform growth rates were obtained by moving the cells, with a motor drive, through a fixed temperature gradient, so that the solid-liquid interface remained stationary with respect to the microscope objective lens. The cells were made by fusing two microscope cover slides 7/8 by 7/8 by 1/100 in. together on three sides, leaving a gap of 1 to 3 mils between the slides, and these were filled by surface tension. A preliminary investigation of the phase diagram between two components could be made very rapidly. One side of the cell was filled with component A and the other side with component B. Since only a small amount of mixing could occur every composition from pure A to pure B was present in the cell. When the cell was placed in the temperature gradient a pictorial representation of the phase diagram was obtained. Other names for the softer steels, such as " homogeneous metal," " Bessemer iron," " Martin iron," and the like, have failed to obtain general recognition. The meaning of the term steel, before it was enlarged to cover newly developing varieties, has been traced, by a recent writer, down through Percy, Shakspeare, and the Bible, in a most interesting manner, from an archaeological point of view. Undoubtedly, it did characterize hardness and other qualities imparted by carbon. It is within the memory of most of us, that all steels were tool steels, and that the soft, structural varieties were introduced-varieties which harden but little, which bend cold, and which, in many physical properties, are akin rather to wrought-iron than to tool-steel. But, since both the hard and the soft steels are made by the same processes, and have their great, distinguishing structural feature in common, viz., homogeneity resulting from fluidity, it has come to pass, despite every other proposed nomenclature, that all the compounds of iron which have been cast in malleable masses, are called steel, the term wrought-iron being still confined to malleable iron made from pasty masses, and hence laminated in structure. No inconvenience has been found, so far, in distinguishing between the more or less carburized products, in general, by the terms " high-steel," " low-steel," " tool-steel," etc., and, in particular, by prefixing the percentage of carbon and other ingredients, to the terra steel. Steels which contain distinguishing ingredients other than carbon, are called "chrome-steel," " titanium-steel," and the like, just as variously compounded bronzes are called "phosphor bronze," "alu¬minium bronze," etc. Thus the combination of several words or symbols, and figures, may completely disclose the characters of the metal, in terms that are subject to no misunderstanding. But inasmuch as several high metallurgical authorities and clever writers have of late proposed to disturb this natural and somewhat settled nomenclature, it seems important to consider the claims of the various classifications. The direct determination of the stabilized performance behavior of low capacity, slowly stabilizing gas wells is extremely time-consuming and wasteful of gas. From both field experience and theoretical considerations, a test procedure has been evolved by which the stabilized hack pressure behavior of such gas wells can he predicted without having to revert to long time flow tests. The method consists of using the isochrona1 test procedure to establish the slope of the back pressure curve, "n", and the short time variation of the performance coeficient, "C", with time. From this short time transient flow data and theoretical considerations, the value of C at large times can he established. By assuming the radius of drainage of a well to be half the distance between wells, one can calculate the stabilization time for various well spacing patterns. Once the stabilization time for a given .spacing has been determined, the value of C can be calculated and the stabilized back-pressure curve can he. establbrhed. The calculated perfortnance coefficient as a function of tinze was cotnpared to the experintentally measured values for a number of gas wel1.e. The time necessary to obtain this data from well tests varies consitlerably, depending on the physical natrcre oj the rt3scrvoir under consideratiot~. INTRODUCTION For many years, the U. S. Bureau of Mines Monograph 7' has served as a guide for testing and evaluating the performance of gas wells by means of the back-pressure method. The back-pressure performance of a gas well is expressed by the following equation: Q~ CW-W.........(I) where the characteristics of the back-pressure equation are determined by C, the performance coefficient, and n, the exponent which corresponds to the slope of the straight line when Q and {P* - PN2) are plotted on logarithmic paper. Q is gas flow rate at standard conditions, and P, and P, are equalized and flowing bottom-hole pressures, respectively. Prior to the development of the back-pressure tcst, the "open flow" capacity method of testing a well was common. By this method, the wells were flowed wide open to the air and the flow rate measured. Such procedure was wasteful of gas and did not provide information on the deliverability of the gas to the pipe line. Monograph 7 Procedure The back-pressure method of testing wells was developed to overcome these shortcomings. Although much has been learned regarding the laws of the flow of gas through porous formations, the original development of the back-pressure relationship was based entirely on empirical methods. The back-pressure behavior provides the engineer with information essential in predicting the future development of a field. It permits him to calculate the deliverability of gas into a pipe line at predetermined line pressures, to design and analyze gas gathering lines, to determine the spacing and number of wells to he drilled during the development of a field to meet gas purchasers' requirements, and to solve many other technical and economic problems. As described in Monograph 7, the flow-after-flow method of back-pressure testing, when applied to fast stabilizing and usually high capacity wells, correctly characterized the behavior of the well. However, as the value of the gas at the wellhead increased, small capacity gas wells having slow rates of stabilization became economically operable. The flow-after-flow method of testing could not be used to describe the behavior of these slowly stabilizing wells. The procedure of Rawlins and Shellhardtl for establishing the back-pressure behavior of a gas well was based on the rcquirement that the data be obtained under stabilized flow conditions; that is, that C is constant and does not vary with time. C depends on the physical properties of the reservoir, the location, extent and geometry of the drainage radius, and the properties of the flowing fluid. In a highly permeable formation, only a very short period of time is required for the well to reach a stabilized condition, and, consequently, the requirements for the test procedure described in Monograph 7 are met.
