Knowing the cost of the gas furnace that was in successful operation here and abroad, I approached the subject with some misgivings as to my ability to attain anything like success, or even to reach a point of advancement. The general impression regarding the preparation of merchantable anthracite is that it is confined to a colossal, grimy structure, called a " coal-breaker." This name is a misnomer; for the desired result is not to break the coal, but to prevent its being broken. Preparation may be said to begin at the face of the chamber, with the mining and loading of the coal. Local conditions vary, not only ill the same field or basin, but also in the same mine, so that there is no fixed empirical rule governing the method of blasting or cutting coal. Tests should be made, when possible, to determine the explosive, or the mechanical coal-cutter, which will produce the largest percentage of what are locally known as " lump " and " prepared sizes " of anthracite. The prepared sizes are those mostly consumed for clomestic purposes. All other sizes might be called by-products of the anthracite industry; for they are not especially desirable, being the degradation resulting from the mining and handling of a brittle or laminated material. Being low in volatile combustible matter, anthracite burns most successfully when nearly of a uniform size, permitting the easy passage of air through the voids. This accounts for the large number of sizes into which the coal is separated. Table I. gives the various sizes, the diameter of ring over and through which each size is made, and the usual purpose for which it is employed.

A MINING institute open to all men interested in any branch of the mining industry will be held at the Col-lege of Mines, University of Washington, Seattle, during the week beginning March 5. Prospectors, miners, mine owners, persons interested in metallurgy, investors in min-ing enterprises, and the public generally are invited to at-tend. This institute will take the place of the Winter Min-ing Session which originated at Seattle in 1897 and con-tinued for twenty-eight years. The complete new equip-ment of the Mines Laboratory will be used to give demon-strations of new machines and processes of mining, ore dressing, and metallurgy. This year the ceramic industry, including cement and branches of clay working of special Importance in the Northwest, will be included in the insti-tute. All instruction will be given by specialists. Prominent technical men and managers will give lectures on their special subjects. Among the speakers engaged are G. T. Jackson, formerly superintendent of the Alaska-Gas-tineau and the Chichagof mines, who will speak on the mining of large bodies of low-grade ore; R. F. McElvenny, superintendent of the Tacoma Smelter, on the nature of contracts that a smelter can offer to mines and prospects; M. D. Leehey, mining lawyer, on some popular errors re-garding the mining law; H. H. Townsend, on the explora-tion and purchase of prospects by operating companies; J. L. McAllen, on quartz mining in the Willow Creek dis-trict, Alaska; F. Powell, on gold dredging. In the evenings, lectures illustrated by stereopticon views and moving pic-tures will be given. The week will close with an excursion o mines and plants.

[Minerals, generally of great geological age, are to a very large extent the material basis of what we know as modern civilization. In most of the so-called civilized world the use f minerals has become such a commonplace that it is easy to se sight of their importance. It was the use of minerals, obably more than anything else, that made it possible for e American people to expand from the Atlantic seaboard the Pacific in a little over one hundred years. As the 1 to use the natural wealth at hand constitutes a funda¬ental element in American life, there seems to be justification for the thought that American geography is largely mineral geography. Of all American environmental reactions, the most striking are those which have come about through the use of the metals and the power fuels. If we turn to the ancient industry of agriculture, we find very little that is unique in North America except those developments which have come about through the use of machinery and transportation, both of which are contingent upon the use of minerals. Practically every crop now grown n North America was grown in some part of Europe before merica was discovered. One can point out exceptions to statement but in general it is true. The practical application of mud-laden fluids in wells has been the subject of many papers.' However, there seems to have been little investigation of what actually happens when mud-laden fluids are applied to a loose porous sand. The assumption is that the fluids penetrate the sands and that there is some plastering action. The degree of penetration and the relation of plastering action to wall stability is not generally known. This paper describes a series of experiments made in an attempt to observe, in laboratory apparatus, the action of mud-laden fluids under conditions simulating those to be found in a well. For the purposes of this discussion all fluids containing solid matter in suspension are mud-laden fluids. Series I: Penetration of the Pores of Uncemented Sands The subject of the penetration of porous formations by water is discussed in detail in Water-Supply Paper No. 67 of the U. S. Geological Survey. No attempt was made to repeat the experiments described therein. The results of the first experiment of this series are given simply to show the capacity of the apparatus used. The conditions in this first experiment were maintained throughout the remainder of this and the second series, except where noted. The experiments of Mills, McCoy, and others on subsurface flows, adjustments, migrations, etc., deal with the oil, water or gas within the porous beds.V he experiments described herein deal with the conditions immediately surrounding the bore hole.

In a paper read by title at the Washingtoil meeting of the Institute,' May, 1905,I discussed at considerable length the geological relations, mode of occurrence, and the genesis of the lead- and zinc-ores of the VirginisTennessee region. The present paper treats of the purely ecorlomic phases of the zinc-ores of the district,—such as methods of mining the ores, their preparation and treatment. The Albemarle coullty mines and plant were discussed in the paper referred to above, and mill not be considered here. Methods of Mining. Until very recently the mining of lead- and zinc-ores in Virginia mas limited wholly to the surface-belt of weathering. The mode of occurrence and the character of the ores to be mined were such as to demand the employment of niethods used in mining secondary concentrated ores. Accordingly, a system similar to that practiced in mining brown iron-ores was employed, being modified to meet the changed conditions. Oxidized or Soft Ores.—Up to the present time practically all the ore mined in the Virginia district has been of the oxidized or soft type;—the silicate, calamine, and the carbonate, smith-sonite; largely the former, which has been localized and concentrated at only slight depths below the surface. Because of the extreme irregularity with which the limestone weathers when stripped of the overlying residual clay, it presents a roughened surface of large and small irregular " chimneys"

THE statistical data given in this paper are taken from the actual performance of the No. 2 reverberatory furnace of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co., Me Gill, Nev., for a period of four months, from April to July, 1914. The principal furnace dimensions are: Length, 132 ft. ½ in. at the skim-line level; average width, 18 ft., 10 in. at the skim-line level. The roof is 7 ft. above the skim-line level at the firing end. The average area in the uptake flue is 36 sq. ft., and the area above the skim line under the vulcatory arch is 24.3 sq. ft. Fig. 1 shows a diagrammatic plan and sectional elevation of this furnace. The furnace is equipped with two 400-b.h.p. Stirling waste-heat boilers set in parallel. California crude petroleum is used for fuel and has a specific gravity of 16.5° B., flashing in open test at 199° F. The oil is heated to about 200° F. in a steam heater before going to the burners, requiring about 9 b.h.p. per furnace day to heat it from the line temperature to the burning temperature. Measurement is made by oil meter, checked daily by reservoir readings. The oil is fed by gravity (34 lb. static pressure) to seven low-pressure blast burners of the Steptoe type (Fig. 2). The blast for these burners is supplied at about 40-oz. pressure by a motor-driven Connersville blower of 42 cu. ft. capacity per revolution. The air supplied by the blower through the burners for atomizing the oil amounts to about 10 per cent. of the theoretical air necessary for complete combustion of the oil. The remainder of the necessary air enters the furnace through the burner openings in the firing wall. No checker holes are provided, and the charge holes in the roof are equipped with slide gates and "dog houses? to minimize air leakages. The combustion of the fuel, as shown by gas analysis at the front of the furnace, is practically complete, the carbon monoxide in the gases being less than 0.5 per cent.

In the United States nearly 200,000 tons of copper per year are being produced, by leaching waste rock and oxidized copper ore with dilute sulfuric acid-ferric sulfate solutions and precipitating the copper on scrap iron. The flow of solutions is in excess of 80 million gpd. A survey conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in late 1965 at 14 mines in Arizona, Utah and Nevada, showed that with a few exceptions, the solutions contain from two to a maximum of 15 ppm U3O8, and there is strong evidence that these represent equilibrium concentration and not merely an accumulated in-process inventory resulting from recycling the solutions for many years. Consequently, it is believed that uranium could be recovered at a constant rate as long as mining and leaching operations continue. Preliminary surveys and estimates by the USBM indicate a production potential of possibly 1000 tons of U3O8 per year at a cost of less than $8 per lb if the major process streams from most of the large copper mines in the western United States were to be treated. Laboratory research by the USBM showed that the uranium could be efficiently recovered as a specification-grade uranium concentrate by a combination of ion exchange resin and solvent extraction of liquid ion exchange techniques. A joint pilot plant investigation by Kennecott Copper Corp. and the USBM was conducted on solutions from the Bingham Canyon mine to evaluate a new system of countercurrent ion exchange developed during the laboratory studies. In subsequent small-scale continuous tests, recovery of uranium from the pregnant eluate by solvent extraction and chemical precipitation techniques was investigated.

Every engineer has occasion to trace or copy a map, plan, or other drawing on paper too thick for the ordinary way of using tracing-cloth or tracing-paper. When the figure is small and simple a copy may be made by holding the original against a window-pane, coverin& it with the paper, and tracing direct by the aid of the strong sunlight from outside. The need of utilizing this principle on a larger scale and in a more convenient position led Dr. J. C. Branner to plan the table of which the following is a description : This table was first made in the form of an adjustable glass-top table with a mirror beneath, in 1887, while Dr. Branner was State Geologist of Arkansas. Later it was modified as experience suggested until the form as here described was evolved. The device consists essentially of a drafting-table with a plate-glass top, upon which the original drawing and the paper are laid, and a mirror mounted underneath to reflect the light of the sky up through the drawing. The glass top is hinged and fitted with two arms and thumb-screws, so that it can be raised and fixed to any position, either inclined or horizontal. The mirror is pivoted and revolves about a horizontal axis, so that it may be tilted to any angle. The hood of cardboard or black cloth prevents the reflection of light from the tracing, and may or may not be attached to the table.

Petroleum operations in Bolivia are still limited to those of the subsidiaries of the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey. Development work is being carried on at Sanandita and at Bermejo and testing operations in the north. Five wells have been completed at Sanandita. Wells 1 and 2 are producers, 3 and 5, which are north of 1 and 2, are poor wells, and well 4, to the south, was dry. In the Bermejo field, well 5 has just been completed. No information as to the production is obtainable. In the north one string was operated at each of the following locations: Machareti, Camatindi and Camiri. The well completed at Machareti during the year was a failure. The result of the others is not known. It is reported on good authority that a pipe line will be completed in 1931 to connect the Sanandita field with the Lomitas field in the Argentine. This will place Bolivia among the ranks of the producing countries of South America for the first time. This development indicates that some arrangement has been arrived at with the Argentine Government for the importation of Bolivian oil. During 1930 the Bolivian Government declared in effect the new Petroleum Law which had been expected for such a long time. One of the first acts of the military junta, which rose to power through a coup d'état, was to cancel this law, so that Bolivian oil operations are still under the old law of 1921. One new local company was formed to exploit 1,500,000 hectares near the town of Cochabamba. The Bolivia Concessions, Ltd., which had a concession permitting the selection of 17,000,000 acres in eastern Bolivia, is reported to have failed in 1930 and is now being liquidated. Chile During 1930 the Chilean Government entered into a contract with an individual to explore in five distinct zones of the Republic. According to the contract, geologists must be at work there by May 1 of this year and a well must be started by the end of 1931. If the operations are

This chapter reviews the steps which should be taken from the time it is decided to consider autogenous grinding in the development of a new ore deposit or the expansion of an existing plant up until the purchase of the new autogenous mills. In this case the term autogenous includes semi -autogenous, secondary pebble mills, and lump milling as well as fully autogenous grinding systems. Also, both wet and dry grinding alternatives have been included. Before the test program it must be decided how many bulk samples are required to properly assess the autogenous grinding possibilities of the deposit. Also, a decision must be made on where and how the samples are to be ground i.e. pilot mill at site or in established location, wet and or dry grinding, etc. In the test program itself, certain fundamental data must be obtained. The testing should include enough work to determine whether fully autogenous or semi-autogenous grinding should be used and what type produces best power efficiency. Also, all the other pertinent data should be collected such as power; tonnages; feed, charge, and product sizing; circulating loads, etc. If a secondary mill is required to produce a final grind the decision on whether a pebble or ball mill should be used may require additional test work. Finally, the concentration of the mineral may play an important part in selection of the circuit and should become a part of the final testing once the grinding has been established.

Many problems have surfaced in our economy during this decade, and the mining industry has certainly had its share: huge capital outlays for environmental controls, volatile markets, double-digit inflation, inadequate capital markets, political uncertainties-plus shortages of energy, manpower, supplies, and equipment. All these and other problems have left their visible marks on the economy of our industry. Solutions are slow in coming; perhaps, in some instances, there are no right answers. However, it appears that many companies are using joint ventures to an increasing extent in efforts to reach partial solutions to some of these problems. A joint venture does present an economic alternative that should be examined-especially when trying to answer questions arising within the current economic context. The dictionary defines "venture" as an undertaking involving chance, risk, or danger. The word was originally applied to hazardous undertakings involving delivery of cargoes to distant ports and subsequent disposition of the merchandise, but it is now applied to any project of limited scope and temporary duration. When two or more entities join in such a project, it becomes a joint venture, and this is the context in which I have used the term. Joint ventures may be formed for exploration, for development of a new ore body, or for expansion of an existing operation. Each requires different approaches for negotiating and drafting the agreement governing the conduct of the joint venture.

THE primary recrystallization texture in cold-rolled silicon iron, which is the matrix texture for developing the Goss texture or the cube-on-edge texture by secondary recrystallization at temperatures near 900°C,1-5,21 has not been adequately described. Thus from the present available information, it is not possible to explain satisfactorily both the grain-growth selectivity of the matrix and the often observed magnetic torque curve, which itself provides some information on the texture. Also lacking is information on the special annealing texture that develops in this material when the annealing temperature is 1200°C or higher and the rate of rise to temperature is extremely rapid. From the work of May and Turnbull5 and from unpublished work, it was known that isothermal annealing near 1200°C tends to reduce the extent of secondary recrystallization and that a much weaker cube-on-edge texture results if appreciable normal grain growth replaces secondary recrystallization. Koh and Dunn6,7 have obtained additional information on complex primary recrystallization textures from further studies made after normal grain growth. In these instances the initial textures were retained during normal grain growth. A similar result reasonably could be expected in the present study except for the presence of a grain growth ihibitor1-5,8,9.21 and its tendency to allow only a few grains to grow. However, any information on the orientations of grains in the special annealing texture, even if far from representative of the initial matrix texture, would provide useful information on the nature of the matrix texture. In the present texture study the method of Newkirk and Bruce,10 which is based on the methods of Geisler" and Schwartz, 12 is used to obtain a complete (110) pole figure of the primary recrystallization texture. The high-temperature annealing texture is determined simply from the orientations of a large number of selected grains. The kinetic nature of the process that produces the annealing texture is treated elsewhere13 and it is shown that a form of secondary recrystallization with a very high rate of nucleation occurs during rapid annealing at high temperatures. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Commercial 0.014-in. cold-rolled silicon iron strip (3.16 wt pct Si), prepared by two stages of cold rolling with an intermediate short anneal, was given a decarburizing 3-min anneal at 800°C. Me-tallographic studies indicated complete recrystallization. Short-time anneals at 900° C and at higher temperatures proved that secondary recrystallization had not begun at 800°C, in fact, the short additional anneals were still in the induction period of secondary recrystallization. A rapid rise to an annealing temperature of 1260°C (2300°F) was obtained in a BaC12and NaCl fused salt bath. The structures that resulted from anneals in the range 12- to 1000-sec duration were relatively finegrained, even though the growth was a form of exaggerated grain growth13 or secondary recrystallization with a high nucleation frequency.= Many of the grains were large enough for an X-ray study using a 5-mil X-ray beam. A transmission Laue Camera and an optical-mechanical stage for moving the grains into the X-ray beam were used. A total of 325 grains were X-rayed in this manner and the grain orientations determined. Complete (110) pole figures were obtained for the primary recrystallization texture using CoKa radiation at 30 kv in the back-reflection range, such as (220) for (110) poles, as described recently by Newkirk and Bruce.10 The low voltage serves to reduce the spurious white radiation to a minimum. A filter of 0.001-inch iron foil was located in front of the detector slit for transmission and in front of the beam slit for back reflection. A new and improved specimen holder extended the useful tilting angle range for transmission to 70 deg instead of 60 deg as previously reported.' A torque magnetometer was used to obtain the magnetic torque curves for a number of l-in. diam disk specimens. RESULTS The (110) pole figure of the material after recrystallization at 800°C is shown in Fig. 1. The positions of the pole concentrations are found to be

FOR the past six years gravity surveys have been used for underground prospecting in the copper mines at Bisbee, Ariz. The primary purpose of the surveys has been to reduce the diamond drilling and crosscutting necessary for exploration. Since many of the orebodies are small, and geologic control is not always apparent, any information that will direct the drilling and crosscutting is highly desirable. Because of extensive development and exploration work in the copper mines at Bisbee, it has been possible to cover more than 630,000 ft of crosscuts on 30 levels with the gravity surveys. In the process the gravity procedures have been refined to a high degree. Density Contrast: For a gravity survey to be successful, a sufficient density contrast must exist between the geologic feature sought and surrounding host rocks. Most mineralized areas will provide this contrast if fairly massive bodies are present. In the Bisbee area the entire sequence of formations, except for alluvium, appears to have specific gravities ranging from 2.65 to 2.70. These values have been determined by means of a large number of cut samples and diamond drill cores. As a further check, vertical gravity differences have been used where nonmineralized sections are known to occur.' The only known major gravity disturbances result from mineralization that has increased the density and the voids that have decreased density. The voids are caused by mining operations and by underground water movement that has developed several areas of caverns. Equipment: While not absolutely essential, a small rugged gravity meter, such as the Worden meter, is highly desirable. A tall tripod, about the height of a transit tripod, permits instrument set-ups in deep water and in locations where fallen timber and muck piles make it impossible to use a short tripod. An additional advantage of a tall tripod is that it places the meter in the center of the crosscut, reducing the error caused by the crosscut void. Size and weight are important, since the only satisfactory means of operating the meter underground is to carry it by hand. A backpack can be used in rare instances but is usually a hindrance because of the close station spacing. The operator's ability to move through tight clearances will improve survey coverage, as it is then possible to move through raises and caved areas and to pass mine cars and machinery with a minimum of trouble. Station Control: Gravity stations are normally located every 100 ft along the crosscuts, at each intersection, and in the face of all stub crosscuts. In areas of high gravity relief, or where small anomalies might be expected, stations may be located at 25 or 50-ft intervals. When possible, the stations should be offset to avoid effects of raises or other voids. The gravity stations on a level are tied to one or more base stations, which are usually located at the shaft or near the portal of an adit. The base stations may be part of a gravity control net that extends to each level in the mine as well as to the surface. Such a net extending throughout the potential area of the surveys is highly desirable, as it is then possible to compare all gravity stations on a uniform basis. The stations that are part of the base net should be carefully established by multiple readings and, if necessary, by a least squares adjustment of the loops. In some instances where levels do not have a shaft station, or where access may be blocked by caving, it may be necessary to establish secondary bases at the top and bottom of the raises that are between levels. Under fair conditions 70 to 90 gravity stations can be located and run in 6 hr by a two-man crew. The best field procedures depend on conditions. Reduction of Field Data: Most of the time required to produce a final gravity map is consumed in processing the data. Each meter reading must be corrected for a minimum of five factors that affect the gravity value in addition to the density contrast being sought. These factors are 1) instrumental drift, 2) station elevation, 3) topography, 4) latitude, and 5) regional gravity gradient. Mine openings, such as stopes and raises, will affect the value. However, it is seldom practical to make corrections for these voids. Usually a rotation is made on the field note on the station, and any

JAY A. CARPENTER, Tonopah, Nev: (communication to the Secretary*).-This description of the Santa Gertrudis mill is of great interest to the operators of similar silver mills in Nevada. At the San Francisco meeting last September there were two excellent papers presented on Nevada silver mills; one by A. H. Jones on The Tonopah Plant of the Belmont Milling Co., and the other by E. E. Carpenter on Cyaniding Practice of the Churchill Milling Co., Wonder, Nev. At the same meeting, I presented a paper on-Slime Agitation and Solution Replacement Methods at the West End Mill, Tonopah, Nev., covering this .particular feature of our milling practice. A comparison of the data presented in these four papers is interesting in that, while the general design and practice is much the same in all cases, there is a wide difference in the design and practice in the various departments of 'the mills. It is to be regretted that Mr. Rose did not round out. this excellent article by following Mr. Jones's and Mr. Carpenter's' lead in giving the average gold and silver content of the ore milled and the resulting tailing, with the consumption of chemicals and the? cost of milling. The practice of the Santa Gertrudis mill in the use of ?cyanide and zinc offers an interesting comparison with that of the Nevada mills, and a discussion of this point may bring out the reasons for the differences that exist.

This paper does not deal with all sands used in the glass industry in Missouri; it covers only that used in the plate-glass factory at Crystal City. However, it is probably safe to say that other sands, pro- duced throughout the state for this purpose, are of identical nature. The glass sand used in Missouri is cornrnonly called the St. Peter deposit, which is ascribed to the Ordovician Rock series in the form of sandstone. This St. Peter deposit, aside from a few small outliers, covers a large area of eastern Missouri. It forms, through a broad curve, the northeast margin of the typical Ozark region between Cape Girardeau on the southeast and Mineola, Montgomery County, on the northwest. The belt is extremely irregular, varying from one to ten miles in width; its length is 150 miles in a straight line. The outcrop near the entrance to the Crystal City mine appears in the form of a sandstone bluff approximately 30 ft. high, running along Plattin Creek (Fig. I). Above the sand rock an overburden of Joachim limestone appears, which thickens to nearly 300 ft. and forms the hill commonly called Buck Knob. Test holes where drilled at various points and the drillers' log indicate that the St. Peter deposit ranges in thickness from 63 to 71 feet. This paper does not deal with all sands used in the glass industry in Missouri; it covers only that used in the plate-glass factory at Crystal City. However, it is probably safe to say that other sands, pro- duced throughout the state for this purpose, are of identical nature. The glass sand used in Missouri is cornrnonly called the St. Peter deposit, which is ascribed to the Ordovician Rock series in the form of sandstone. This St. Peter deposit, aside from a few small outliers, covers a large area of eastern Missouri. It forms, through a broad curve, the northeast margin of the typical Ozark region between Cape Girardeau on the southeast and Mineola, Montgomery County, on the northwest. The belt is extremely irregular, varying from one to ten miles in width; its length is 150 miles in a straight line. The outcrop near the entrance to the Crystal City mine appears in the form of a sandstone bluff approximately 30 ft. high, running along Plattin Creek (Fig. I). Above the sand rock an overburden of Joachim limestone appears, which thickens to nearly 300 ft. and forms the hill commonly called Buck Knob. Test holes where drilled at various points and the drillers' log indicate that the St. Peter deposit ranges in thickness from 63 to 71 feet.
