This report represents the first comprehensive accounting of lode mining sites in the Loon Creek mining district, Custer County, Idaho. Thirty-five mine and prospect locations have been added to the Bureau's Mineral Industry Location Subsystem (MILS) data base as a result of initial phases of a mineral appraisal of the River of No Return Wilderness; previously known locations were field checked and the updated information added to the data base. The district's major deposits are gold-copper-silver fissure-fillings hosted by biotite schist intruded by dikes ranging in composition from rhyolite to lamprophyre. These deposits contain a trace element suite similar to Tertiary pink granites and may be related to intrusion of the nearby Casto pluton. Continued firm gold prices could stimulate the search for precious metal occurrences in this and other mining districts in central Idaho.

Unverified reports of rare earth element (REE) concentrations in gold placers and radioactive mineral prospects in the Zane Hills were investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines as part of the Alaska critical minerals program. REE is reported to occur in dredge concentrates at the Hogatza mine and up to 1.2 pct REE was previously analyzed in alkalic syenite (bostonite) dikes marginal to the pluton. In addition, numerous thorium-rich veins, explored for their uranium content but unevaluated for REE, occur on the western margin of the Zane Hills. The Bureau mapped and sampled all of the reported or suspected REE occurrences. Dredge concentrates contain abundant uranothorianite, a mineral species which incorporates cerium subgroup REE. Bostonite dikes occur in conjunction with a multi-phased zoned alkalic intrusion, however, no significant REE concentrations were found. Thorium-rich veins contain nil to 0.5 pct Y but resource potential is limited by this relatively low grade, the ultimate low tonnage potential, and the lack of uranium as a major economic element. The Zane Hills exhibit attractive exploration targets for uranium deposits, primarily in a sedimentary form. Gold may be found peripheral to the pluton in both placer and lode deposits. Resource potential of REE, however, appears limited to a placer by-product of REE-Zr-Ti that is recoverable only during large scale gold placer mining. Placer exploration of the lower Wheeler and Dakli Creeks is suggested.

The Bismark Mine is located in northern Chihuahua, Mexico, 150 km (95 miles) southwest of Ciudad Juarez (Fig.1). The ore deposit was discovered in 1979 and was placed in production in 1992. The production rate is about 2.4 kt/d (2650 stpd) from an ore reserve of 8.5 Mt (9.3 million st). Grades currently average about 8% zinc, 0.5% lead, 0.2% copper and 50 g/t (1.46 oz/st) silver. Substantial inflows of water into the underground mine complicate the operation. Complex metallurgy poses another challenge for the operators. Bismark is a joint venture with 90% participation by Minas Penoles, SA de CR of Mexico City and 10% participation by Promociones Industriales Banamex, S A de C V (PIB S A) of Mexico City. Anew company, Minera Bismark, SA de CV was formed to operate the property. Cyprus Minerals was a 40% participant in the joint venture but, in early 1993, sold its share to Minas Penoles. The Bismark Mine is one of the largest new underground mining projects built in Mexico during the last 10 years. It is the country's fifth largest underground metal mine and provides about 1 % of the world's zinc supply at about 50 t/a (55,000 stpy). Bismark is a trackless operation with overall productivities of 7.6 t/manshift (8.4 st/manshift). The 2.4-kt/d (2650-stpd) concentrator started up in March 1992.

Africa has a long history of mining and has been one’of the world’s greatest sources of gold and other mineral resources since the days of the Egyptian pharaohs. Mining in Africa has been dominated by South Africa since World War II. However, in the past 10 to 15 years, other African countries are beginning to slowly catch up with South Africa. Ghana, formerly called the “Gold Coast” is located on the West Coast of Africa. Ghana has been involved in mining activities for well over 100 years. Most of the mining activities centered on the mining of gold and were to a large extent limited to underground mining methods. With a more liberal economic policy regarding the exploration and exploitation of Ghana’s mineral resources, mining activities are beginning to evolve to a much larger scale. Drilling and blasting which is an important aspect of this evolution is also changing due to the involvement of foreign-based mining and explosives companies.

The vapor pressures of liquid titanium and liquid platinum were studied under the Bureau of Mines program for the determination of thermochemical data on the transition elements. Beating was done in a 2-kw electron-beam furnace with a water-cooled copper crucible to contain the melt. Temperature was measured with a disappearing-filament brightness pyrometer. The vapor pressure data for liquid titanium in the range 2,008° to 2,379° K are represented by the least-squares derived equation [log p (atm) = 6.268 - 22, T] Two series of determinations were made on liquid platinum. Results of the first series are expressed by the least-squares derived equation [log p (atm) = 8.240 - 30,460T] for the range 2,0860 to 2,4200 K. Results of the second series are expressed by the least-squares derived equation [log p (atm) = 7.795 - 29,580 T] in the range 2,045° to 2,442° K. Third-law evaluations of each series gave mean standard heats of sublimation of 112.4 kcal/mole, 133.3 kcal/mole, and 133.8 kcal/mole for titanium first series on platinum, and second series on platinum, respectively. Second-law heats of sublimation and equations for heats, free energies, and entropies of vaporization were obtained from sigma plots of each data set.

This paper traces the rise of South Africa's mining industry in the context of the different state forms that oversaw its development. It commences with the mining-led industrial revolution through four periods of conflict, each of which contributed to a deepening of the industrial base, with constant battles between domestic and foreign capital and labour, and the rise of both Afrikaner and African nationalism. The role of state-owned enterprises has been crucial in shaping this dynamic so that at its peak the public sector and leading mining houses constituted two massive centres of power. This was followed by a thirty-year period of neo-liberal experimentation. The current debate on the 'developmental state' is an attempt to reconstruct the state as a counterweight to capital. It is argued that while the country has moved toward inclusive political and economic institutions, these are both limited by deep 'extractive' characteristics. This transformation failure provides a fertile ground for populism that presents one of the biggest threats to inclusive growth. Cited examples point to the many ways that states have sought to deal with the bonanza that conversion of mineral non-resources into resources brings. Such greenfield resources on state land, or in areas where the state holds monopoly rights, do not present ownership issues. It is suggested that this is the route that South Africa should follow, as the alternative will be conflictual.

The excavation of ramps and tunnels often requires high-speed development with (or without) the use of high-energy mining equipment such as loaders, dump trucks, TBMs and roadheaders. This high-speed development creates a challenge in terms of providing a safe and productive working environment. For example, heat from continuously exposed surrounding rock, heat from broken rock, heat generated by mining equipment, potential in flows of hot ground water, pollution from associated diesel equipment and the distance of the advancing face from fresh through-ventilation all have to be taken into account when designing ventilation systems for high-speed ramp and tunnel developments. This paper discusses methods of achieving acceptable environments at the face and along the length of the tunnel. The methodology has been successfully implemented in the development of long (up to 20 km) TBM drives in the Lesotho Highlands Project and in mining projects in hot rock using drill and blast methods as well as mechanized methods using continuous miners and roadheaders. The determination of heat loads includes calculation of the heat flow within the surrounding rock, evaluation of the operating cycle of the equipment and the contribution to the overall heat load of the broken rock as it travels out of the tunnel. The determination of heat loads from surrounding rock in new tunnels required a modification of the algorithms generally used for established excavations. The paper also examines the use of, for example, mobile duct and fan systems to ensure that fresh air is delivered to the specific areas where workers are located.

The behavior similarity between pile and cone penetration test, has guided the researchers to use the CPT results in prediction of piles bearing capacity. In this article, artificial neural networks have been used to study about relation between cone tip and sleeve friction strength obtained from cone penetration test and ultimate pile bearing capacity, obtained from static pile load test. Artificial neural networks "ANNS" is a form of artificial intelligence. ANN tries to dramatize the human nerves & brain system biology structure in self-structure. In this article, the results of relevant studies about the prediction of ultimate pile bearing capacity in especial area of soils are presented by use of back - propagation neural networks. The results of static pile load test up to failure on 63 piles with closed end and CPT test results in the place of construction these piles use in order to confirm and creation ANN model. Comparing predicted ultimate pile bearing capacity by utilizing ANN with the numbers which are predicted by 5 common traditional methods shows that using of artificial neural networks is a suitable method for predicted ultimate pile bearing capacity in identified area of texture of soil moreover it has a better operation in comparison with common traditional methods.

The need to establish and harmonise methodologies to quantify air emissions, atmospheric dispersion and the consequences of air pollutants (especially hexavalent chromium) from the ferrochrome industry became important aspects with the increasing demands for comprehensive impact assessments. The paper includes a synthesis of current knowledge on the following aspects: ? Locally and internationally accepted methodologies for the quantification of chromium emissions, including sampling methods and emission factors; ? A compilation of recognised and accepted air quality sampling and laboratory analysing techniques; and, ? Dispersion modelling and impact assessment tools. Depositing and removing materials from the chromium ore stockpile and wind erosion of exposed stockpiles result in mainly chromite emissions unlikely to contain significant amounts of hexavalent chromium. Pre-treatment processes such as drying, crushing and screening also produces chromium emissions, but mainly as trivalent chromium. The smelting of chromium is the major source of chromium emissions - open furnaces have the highest uncontrolled chromium emissions, followed by semi-closed and closed furnaces, respectively. Based on the current knowledge on emission rates, interim emission factors for particulate, total chromium and hexavalent chromium releases are provided. Ambient sampling and analytical methods to determine environmental exposure of the general public require that hexavalent chromium needs to be quantified in very low concentrations. Suggested sampling and analytical methods for both source characterisation and ambient monitoring are provided. The selection between dispersion models needs to be based on the size of the modelling domain and the complexity of the terrain. The discussion on dispersion models includes the US EPA?s Industrial Source Complex Model (Version 3), the AERMET/AERMOD suite of models and the CALMET/CALPUFF suite of models. Guidelines are also proposed for environmental exposure assessments including cancer and non-cancer health effects.

Industrial Minerals commodity profiles are continued from May's Annual Review issue. Diatomite G. Coombs, Manville Sales Corp. Growth in US diatomite production continued to lag in 1986. The US Bureau of Mines estimated that 580 kt (640,000 st) were produced last year. This is a 1%0 growth over 1985. The cumulative growth from the 1982 low point is 4.4%. Present production, though, is still only 90% of the high tonnage of 1979. The industry will see increased competitive activity with the start-ups of two new mines and production facilities in California and Oregon. US production has come primarily from Lompoc, CA, Bassalt, Clark Station, and Lovelock, NV, and Quincy, WA. New production, probably with capacities of 45 kt/a (50,000 stpy) each, have started near Burney, CA, and Vale, OR. Eagle Picher's new, full-line filter aid and filler plant at Celatom, Vale, OR, was dedicated in August. The plant uses diatomite from the Celatom mining district in Juntura, OR. Grefco's new filter aid and filler plant near Burney, CA, was ready in July. It produced flux calcined products through a single kiln and can handle both bag and bulk shipments. The operations are in Shata County with the plant and mine at the same site. Manville Specialties Group is moving its Filtration and Minerals Division headquarters and research staffs to Lompoc, CA. The move is intended to strengthen response and performance by locating research, marketing, and production close together. Diatomite is processed in three methods: natural, calcined, and flux calcined. The natural is dried to remove water and is particle size classified. Calcined or straight calcined products have been sintered to modify particle size or permeability. Flux calcination, or flux sintering, has a stronger influence on permeability and also benefits color. The unique structure of diatomite is used in a range of particle sizes from fine paint fillers, to coarser filter aids, to granular aggregates. Dimension stone L. Meade, Geomapping Associates Ltd. 1986 was another good year for dimension stone production. The trend toward using marble, granite, limestone, sandstone, and slate has created an increasing demand. According to US Bureau of Mines 1986 estimates, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of dimension stone, with a value of $173 million, was produced by 200 companies. This is an increase from 1985, where 220 companies produced 1 Mt (1.12 million st) valued at $172 million. The increased production volume and decreased unit value is due to the competition from imports. The net import reliance in 1986 was 68% compared to 62% in 1985. The value of imports was $374 million in 1986 versus $295 million the year before. In an effort to maintain their market share, domestic finishers, particularly in the granite industry, continued to upgrade plants and machinery during 1986. In addition, offshore dollars have financed a number of fabricating facilities in North America that will finish imported rough stock. It is hoped that this increased domestic production capability will capitalize on a devalued US dollar. The trend has been for growth in stone usage and market. This trend is continuing with increased public awareness and desire for natural stone in buildings. The area of greatest market growth is expected to be in residential and interior decorative stone usage. Use of sophisticated, automated equipment has made the cost more affordable. Now lobbies, foyers, and specialty rooms are being clad in stone. Dolomite J. Welshimer, National Lime & Stone Co. About three-quarters of dolomite production is used as construction aggregates and 10% to 20% is sold or used as an industrial mineral. Total limestone and dolomite consumed for chemical and metallurgical purposes is about 136 Mt/a (150 million stpy). Sales of industrial dolomitic products were somewhat stronger in 1986 than levels recorded in the early 1980s. Some of the sales' strength, however, can be attributed to reductions in the number of active mining and processing operations. The industry will probably undergo further consolidation by the end of this decade. This will be due primarily to the continued softening in demand by the steel industry. Dolomitic limestone deposits being mined for raw materials for the steel, glass, and refractory in¬dustries are generally 54% calcium carbonate and 45% magnesium carbonate by weight. Impurities composed of silicon, aluminum, iron, sulfur, and phosphorous, represent less than 1%. The heaviest concentration of high purity, surface mineable dolomite in the US is in northwestern Ohio. Crushed and sized dolomitic limestone is a basic raw material for the iron and steel industry. It is also used as feed stone or lime kilns. Soft-burned lime is a popular raw material for BOF steel production. It is also used extensively in insulating glass fiber manufacturing. A case history of design, prediction, probe pile driving, and construction of a pile foundation for Building 3 of Waterside at Bay Beach Condominiums located in Fort Myers Beach, southwest Florida, is presented. Site geometry constraints, the presence of a 12.0 ft (3.6 m) deep lake occupying the southern one-third portion of the proposed building footprint, and marginal subsoils provided specific challenges for design and construction of the foundation. The subsoil conditions were explored by performing Standard Penetration Test (SPT) borings and a Piezocone Penetration Test (PCPT) Sounding to depths of 100 ft (30.5 m) within the building footprint. Additionally, borings were performed to envelope the building. Deep foundation alternatives included driven concrete, monotube, and steel pipe pile as well as drilled shaft. Following an evaluation of high structural loads, site-specific constraints, foundation test data from buildings 1 and 2, and preference expressed by the project owner, a pre-cast prestressed concrete (PPC) pile-supported foundation system was selected as an economical and effective foundation approach. Use of an augered cast-in-place (ACIP) pile foundation system was precluded by the project structural engineer. This paper deals with the design aspects and methodologies utilized in choosing and economizing the foundation system. The building foundation was designed for an allowable pile capacity of 40 tons (353 kN) in compression, 1.5 tons (12 kN) in lateral capacity for a deflection of 0.25-in (0.64 cm) and 15 tons (133 kN) in uplift capacity. For the single story extended garage structure, a pile capacity of 27 tons (238 kN) was indicated in compression. As part of the design process, an extensive probe pile driving program was carried out in order to evaluate the pile driving equipment, determine and verify pile capacities, and optimize the production pile lengths. A total of 33, 14-in (356 mm) square, PPC concrete piles were driven within the entire building limits, and dynamically load tested utilizing Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) as part of the probe pile driving program. Utilization of PDA during probe pile driving helped in predicting pile set-up (i.e., increase in pile resistance with time) as well as reducing the pile lengths by as much as 20 percent. It resulted in variable pile lengths during the production phase. This information was effectively utilized as part of the overall quality control program to install a total of 559 PPC piles (including 33 probe piles) within the Building 3 footprint, including the reclaimed lake area, to depths ranging from 45 to 58 ft (14 to 18 m) below existing ground elevation as part of the foundation support system. Prior to installation of probe or production piles, a termination criterion was established using 1-dimensional wave equation analyses in addition to the design pile embedment requirement. The predicted pile capacities compared reasonably well with the capacities from the CAPWAP analyses for probe piles. This engineered, monitored and tested foundation solution provided a cost effective and satisfactory basis for completion and approval of the foundation work for the building resulted in cost savings over other foundation alternatives for the owner. The building has since been occupied and a recent reconnaissance has indicated that the building foundations are performing satisfactorily.

The production of sulphuric acid from sulphur generates heat. The majority of this heat is recovered as steam and is often used to generate electricity. Heat not recovered as steam is rejected to cooling water systems. The design of the turbine, condenser, and cooling water systems impacts the overall water, energy, and environmental footprint of the plant. This review considers a conceptual 2000 t/d sulphuric acid plant with several alternative cooling water systems. The review utilizes Hatch?s 4 Quadrant sustainable design tool to compare the alternatives on both an economic and a weighted sustainability scale.

This paper is based on the assumption of some knowledge of the National Water Act. It will consider the question of how that Act fits in with: a) existing laws which overlap on the subject matter b) new laws either in draft or in the process of being compiled c) policies which will eventually find their provisions included in new legislation (e.g. minerals policy) d) international practices. The focus will be specifically on the interaction of legislation relating to water use and water pollution in the mining sector as well as the role of the Department of Water Affairs in mining matters. Hence the title of the presentation.

The DEEPMINE Collaborative Research Programme was established to create the technological and human resources platform that would make it possible to mine gold safely and profitably at depths of 3 to 5 km. The DEEPMINE Programme has four goals: to acquire knowledge of and develop appropriate technology for new ultra-deep level mines, to stimulate education and training, to establish a culture of innovation, and to encourage rapid technology transfer and implementation. The research programme was launched in July1998 and will be completed in March 2002, with the final year focusing on the transfer of knowledge to the industrial partners. DEEPMINE represents a new model for conducting mining research: it is driven by industry needs; emphasizes collaboration between industrial partners, research organizations and tertiary education institutions; and has a novel joint-funding mechanism. DEEPMINE has employed a range of vehicles to transfer knowledge to its industrial partners. Novel aspects include: (a) electronic publication of Summary Reports and Guideline Handbooks that seek to consolidate the huge body of knowledge comprehensively and concisely, (b) a series of DEEPMINE Schools designed to enable industry practitioners to apply the knowledge to their current work situation, and (c) Consultancy Reviews, where DEEPMINE specialists seek to apply knowledge to specific real problems on mines.

New 40Ar/39Ar dates of vein and wall rock adularia from seven epithermal deposits and one porphyry copper prospect help constrain the ages of mineralisation in the Hauraki Goldfield. Vein adularia from the Paritu region yielded a single 40Ar/39Ar plateau date of 16.315 ¦ 0.066 Ma. Five 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of three samples of vein adularia from the Opitonui deposit overlap within error to yield a preferred age of 13.149 ¦ 0.016 Ma. Two samples of vein adularia from the Night Reef at the Broken Hills deposit yield exceptionally flat 40Ar/39Ar plateaus, and all dates overlap within error to provide an age of 7.121 ¦ 0.010 Ma. Two 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of one sample of vein adularia from the Wharekirauponga deposit overlap within error to provide an age of 6.318 ¦ 0.061 Ma. Four 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of three samples of vein adularia from the Maratoto deposit overlap within error to provide an age of 6.411 ¦ 0.022 Ma. Two samples of adularia from altered wall rock at the Sovereign deposit yield three 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that range from 6.547 ¦ 0.021 to 6.806 ¦ 0.028 Ma. This suggests that mineralisation formed around 6.6 Ma, but the results are complicated because the adularia contains minor illite that post-dates adularia formation. Results from the Karangahake deposit are complex. Two samples of vein adularia yield three 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that range from 6.116 ¦ 0.116 to 6.901 ¦ 0.101 Ma, whereas one sample of wall rock adularia that contains minor late illite yields two 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that overlap within error to provide a date of 5.734 ¦ 0.041. The range of dates indicates that more work is necessary to understand the history of mineralisation at this deposit. Two samples of vein adularia from the Tui deposit yield four 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that overlap within error to provide an age of 5.714 ¦ 0.017 Ma. These results confirm previous work that indicates that the ages of epithermal deposits young southward in the Hauraki Goldfield. These results are also consistent with previously postulated different ages for deposits hosted in Kuaotunu Subgroup rocks in the northern goldfield (>10 Ma), and deposits hosted in Waiwawa Subgroup rocks in the southern goldfield (7.1 to 5.7 Ma).

"During the early summer of 1989, Ontario Hydro removed a concrete portion of the North Channel Dam at Crystal Falls Generating Station by blasting and excavating in marine conditions. Because of the severity of underwater blasting and because the site was in close proximity to the replacement dam, there was concern that hydraulic shock waves generated by the detonation could damage either the new dam or its control structures. This paper examines the data associated with the hydraulic shock waves generated by underwater blasting, and studies the effectiveness of an air curtain in reducing the peak pressures. In previous trials using the air curtain technique, a rule-of-thumb factor was used to estimate that only 10% of the original pressure pulse would propagate across the air curtain. However, this value had little basis in theory. A theoretical formulation of the problem by Karney in 1989 indicated a provisional value of 0.18 for this factor, but was heavily dependent on confirmation from in-field testing. Data provided by Ontario Hydro from an actual blasting procedure indicate that a more conservative value of 0.32 may be more appropriate. Thus.although the air curtain did provide considerable reduction of peak pressures, the data at Crystal Falls indicates its performance was below the anticipated level. However, due to problems with the instrumentation and some inconsistencies in the resulting data. it is recommended that this value be further refined as additional data become available."

This paper presents the results of a study using computer human modeling to examine machine appendage speed. The objective was to determine the impact of roof bolter machine appendage speed on the likelihood of the operator coming in contact with. A contact means two or more objects intersecting or touching each other, e.g., appendage makes contact with the operator?s hand, arm, head or leg. Incident investigation reports do not usually contain enough information to aid in studying this problem and laboratory experiments with human subjects are also not feasible because of safety and ethical issues. As an alternative, researchers developed a computer model approach as the primary means to gather data. By simulating an operator?s random behavior and machine?s appendage velocity, researchers can study potential hazards of tasks where it is not possible to perform experiments with human subjects. Analysis information is helpful to the mining industry in terms of making recommendations that reduce the likelihood that roof-bolter operators experience injury due to contact with a moving boom. Data analysis of roof bolter simulations show that the virtual-operator?s response time has little effect on the number of contacts experienced. Based on frequency and cross-tabulation, regardless of other variables, contact incidents were always greater when the boom was moving up, were always greater on the palm, and were always greater for the boom part of the machine. Also, regardless of boom speed, the 25th-percentile-sized operators experienced more contacts than did other operator sizes. Furthermore, regardless of boom speed, the 152-cm mine seam experienced more contacts than did other seam heights tested. Results of a survival analytic approach suggest that controlling the boom speed is the most important factor in determining the risk of an operator making contact. Based on the data collected, boom speed greater than 41 cm/s results in a substantial increase in risk to the roof bolter operator and should probably be avoided. At speeds less than or equal to 25 cm/s are associated with a more modest relative risk, which represents an acceptable level of risk.
