Effective strata control, utilising fully encapsulated resin grouted roof bolts is dependent on the installed quality of the reinforcement elements. Resin based grouts are the main form of rock bolt anchorage in the underground coal industry in Australia and New Zealand. To be effective the system requires the mixing of the catalyst and mastic components of the resin as well as shredding of the cartridge that contains the resin. Over the past six years Solid Energy New Zealand Ltd (SENZ) has pioneered an extensive work programme quantifying the effects and extent of poor installation quality due to gloving, poor mixing and loss of encapsulation (Pastars 2003, Campbell et al 2003, Mould et al 2004, Campbell et al 2005 and Pastars & MacGregor, 2005). The One-Step Bolt (OSB), an innovative bolting solution designed and manufactured by Hilti Pty Ltd offers a self drilling, single pass bolting method that eliminates gloving, guarantees mixing quality and encapsulation performance of the installed product while not jeopardising the mechanical performance of the bolt. This paper details recent work undertaken by SENZ designed to understand and quantify the system performance of the Hilti OSB in New Zealand?s thick coal seam mining environments.

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health have demonstrated that mine-wide ventilation in large-opening stone mines can be improved by using low-pressure, high-volume propeller fans and constructing stoppings in key locations to direct and control airflow. In light of these findings, a comparative study was conducted to determine if a portable diesel-powered propeller fan could per-form more efficiently for dust dilution and transport than an axial vane fan for localized ventilation. The objective of this study is to evaluate both fan types for ventilation efficiency at an underground dump/crusher facility in a limestone mine. Results showed an improvement with the propeller fan to dilute both the respirable dust and the respirable silica dust around the dump/crusher facility. Overall, an average reduction of 20% in respirable dust and silica was observed at the dump/crusher location with the propeller fan.

Bob Woolsey was born in 1936 in the state of Georgia and grew up to be a man of great integrity, vitality, wisdom and charm, totally neutral on matters of race, gender, and religion. A true Southern Gentleman in every sense of the word. His passing on July 9, 2008, the victim of an automobile collision, left an empty space in the hearts of his family, and his many friends and colleagues throughout the globe. The posthumous award of the Moore Medal of the International Marine Minerals Society, to Dr. J. Robert Woolsey for Excellence in the Development of Marine Minerals, is a well deserved tribute to this man who spent the last 30 years of his professional career heavily involved in research and development of marine minerals on an international basis. He first came to my attention in Burma in 1979 where, as a newly appointed technical advisor to the United Nations Development Program Offshore Exploration for Tin, I had to fill the shoes of an almost legendary figure "Dr. Bob", who accompanied by his wife Maxine had spent the previous two years initiating the program. Bob had planned to completion the construction in Singapore of a unique drilling vessel the RV Sea Drill, a spud anchored, twin-hulled barge, mounted with a Becker Drill, and designed for sampling alluvial tin deposits in the coastal waters of the Mergui Archipelago in the Andaman Sea, off Tenasserim. He had also designed and built, with the help of his side -kick Bruce Jernigan, a barge mounted dressing plant for reducing and concentrating the drill samples. The adventures of Dr. Bob in transporting the equipment to the drilling site in monsoon weather and the transfer of the drill barge from the Malaysian port of Ranong across the strait to Victoria Point in Burma with a mutinous crew will remain in the hearts and minds of his Burmese colleagues for many a long year. On his return to the States he joined, in 1980, the faculty of the University of Mississippi (UM) as assistant Professor of Geology and Geological Engineering. His prior experience in private industry and the United Nations had focused on marine mineral resources and related environmental engineering projects in Africa, South America, the Mediterranean, the South Pacific as well as south east Asia, working with dredges, mining for alluvial tin, gold, diamonds and industrial minerals. He continued to work in the area of marine minerals at UM, making a name for himself as Director of the Mississippi Mineral Resources Institute (MMRI).

When the price of gold cracked the US$9.60/g(US$300/oz) mark last year, the gold-mining industry began to crank up again. This followed several years of gold prices that had languished in the mid-200s. Existing mines increased production and mines that had lain dormant for many years were getting second looks. The United States still produces a large amount of gold. But not much of the new production is coming from that country. Instead, strict environmental regulations still have companies wary of trying to invest the millions needed to start a new mine or expand existing ones. And after years of studies and negotiations between legislators, environmental interests and the mining industry, the United States still has not crafted a new mining law.

The world wide growth dynamics and the continuously growing demand for energy, results in increasing energy prices. Looking from this point, the efficient exploitation of fossil fuel deposits has become a more important factor to the production of energy raw materials than ever before. This shall be reached by an increase of the automation degree of the bucket wheel excavator in the open pit mining as well as a quality increase of the entire mining process chain. A further optimization of this operation can only be achieved by gathering additional information about the input parameters. The earlier and more exact the description of the input parameter, the greater the effectiveness of the entire process chain. To address this major issue, the RWE Power AG assigned the Institute for Transportation and Automation Technology with the research project "SIMT, Sensory Identification of Material Type and Detection of the Interfaces" [Kes07]. Presently, the control of the bucket wheel excavator is carried out manually by the operator, as well as the visual identification of the different geological layers and the energy raw materials. In this paper, a sensor-system is introduced, which was developed in order to transfer the manual material identification and detection of interfaces into an automatic online procedure. A special challenge and the main focus of this contribution is the integration of this sensor system into a bucket of the bucket wheel excavator. For measuring procedures where direct contact with the in situ material is necessary, the sensor has to be integrated into the bucket. Since direct contact with the material is not necessary, it can be integrated next to the bucket wheel. The results of a preliminary study show that although there is a broad spectrum of sensor technologies for material and interface identification, only a few are suitable for an application in on-line measuring at the bucket wheel excavator. Taking into consideration the demands on the sensor technology, the studies carried out and comparable applications of individual sensor technologies which have already taken place in practice, the integration of the following measuring systems have been realized: ground penetrating radar / reflection measurements, geo electric, resistance geo electric technology. The solution developed in the research project offers for the first time the direct integration of sensor systems into the bucket of a bucket wheel excavator. It will now be possible to test other measurement methods and sensors, not only for the ones already mentioned. As an example the integration of a triaxial accelerometer to measure the solid borne sound and vibrations concerning the cutting of different materials will be shown.

Experience is reporled in the operation of the pilot Lurgi carbonization plant at Morwell, afler it had been reconstructed to obtain better control of the heating of the briquettes in order to produce a strong char suitable for use as a metallurgical fuel. The theoretical Ideal Heating Cycle, which had been designed from earlier laboratory research, was closely approached in the carbonizer, and up to 97 per cent of the whole dried briquettes entering the carbonizer were recovered unbroken in the char.The strength of the char produced in the pilot plant was limited by the performance of the drier where the cracking and breakage of the briquettes was more severe. Theoretical studies have indicated that this limitation could be removed by using a hot briquette feed to the pilot plant. Experience indicates that with a hot briquette feed to the drier and with ideal heating in the carbonizer, hard char could be produced from Yallourn briquettes in continuous operation.The project has been terminated for economic reasons...

Stratabound copper ore bodies in thick Proterozoic metamorphosed sedimentary and volcanic rocks at the Tong Kuang Yu Mine in southern Shanxi Province of China were considered as possibly being amenable to block cave mining. Initial evaluation of caving characteristics was based upon old calyx drilling records, limited underground mining experience and geological mapping, a few diamond drill holes and measurements in surface subsidence features. Classification and mapping distribution of rock quality types aided in mine design, prediction of fragment sizing and explosive requirements, cave assist and ground support requirements. Comparison is made between early feasibility predictions and actual mine experience.

The Triassic Ipswich (SE. Queensland) coals are of bituminous rank. The more exact rank of individual samples was determined by measuring the reflectance of the vitrinite. While in general the rank of the coals increases with stratigraphic depth, minor reversals, probably related to igneous intrusions, occur.The Ipswich coals form a coherent group so far as petrographic type is concerned. All are comparatively rich in vitrite and clarite, cutinite being the common maceral of the exinite group. The mineral contents of all the coals are comparatively high, clay and quartz being most abundant. The coals appear to be of essentially autochthonous origin, and to have been formed under conditions of fairly rapid subsidence.While the use of the coals is at present restricted to combustion, most have pronounced coking properties, as would be predicted from their petrographic composition and reflectance. However, the high mineral content of the coals would be a limiting factor in their use for coke-making.INTRODUCTIONDuring the last ten years, the Division of Coal Research, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization has carried out an extensive investigation of Australian coals, providing a wide range of analyses of most of the important of them. Special attention has been given in recent years to Queensland coals.Most seams were sampled as a number of subsections, enabling the internal variations, as well as the overall properties, to be assessed. With the depleting iron reserves and difficult market conditions, precision in separation efficiency is of utmost importance. Classical local control options are predominant in the industry, but their inability to adjust to resolve application problems of interest has furthered the need of developing and implementing continuous control methodologies.This paper highlights the recent development in control of Outotec SLon® vertically pulsating high gradient magnetic separator (VPHGMS) including programmable logic controllers (PLC) coupled with distributed control system (DCS), on-site human–machine interface (HMI) control panel, advanced process control, continuous online sampling using Courier® 8 and additional modernisation packages including level control and cooling monitoring. The Bolivar Cu-Zn skarn deposit in the Piedras Verdes mining district of Chihuahua is one of many base and precious metal deposits in the north-northwest trending Sierra Madre Belt extending across the states of Chihuahua, Durango and Sonora in northwestern Mexico. The information presented here is drawn from two papers on the Bolivar property1,4 plus new information. Historical mining and exploration for polymetallic Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag-Au deposits in the Sierra Madre Belt dates to Spanish Colonial days. Access to the Bolivar Property (Figure 1) is by paved road (approximately 305 km southwest from Chihuahua) and approximately 80 km by all-season gravel roads to the villages of Cieneguita (population ~1,000) and Piedras Verdes (population ~500) adjacent to the property. [ ] The Bolivar property comprises an old Cu-Zn producer (the Bolivar Mine), exploration concessions adjacent to the Bolivar Mine, and a new camp at the mine that supports mining, exploration and maintenance. From 1980 to 2000, former operators extracted approximately 300,000 tonnes of ore that was hand sorted to an average grade of 5-6% Cu and 25-30% Zn. From 2005-2010, Dia Bras produced from the mine just over 600,000 tonnes at an average grade of 1.7% Cu and 8.6% Zn. Dia Bras transported mineralized rock 275 km by truck and rail to its Malpaso mill, located about 30 km west of Cuauhtémoc in central Chihuahua, from 2005 until October 2011 when the new Piedras Verde mill was commissioned only 5 km from the mine. (Note: the Company cannot use the term ?ore? because it has never completed a feasibility study.)

Extraction of copper from a chalcopyrite concentrate by means of a cupric chloride leach is described. Initially the concentrate is mixed with sulphur in a 9: 1 ratio, and heated to 350-400°C. This converts the chalcopyrite into more readily soluble sulphides, while the iron rejected from the chalcopyrite is transformed to pyrite, which is insoluble in the leach solution employed. A two-stage countercurrent leach using a leach solution of 1 M cupric chloride, 3.5 M sodium chloride, and 1 M hydrochloric acid extracts 98 per cent of the copper, if conducted at 105°C. Iron extraction is relatively low, the mole ratio of iron to copper extracted being 0.17, compared to 1.0 for unreacted chalcopyrite. After dissolution, copper can be recovered by electrolysis, cupric chloride leach solution being regenerated at the anode.Electrolytic power requirement is low, being approximately 0.5 kWh per kg of copper. The sulphur and, most of the iron entering as feed are rejected from the process in the form of pyrite, which remains in the leach residue.

The Manapouri Power Station is an underground hydro-electric station located in the South Island of New Zealand, and was constructed in the 1960s. Between 1997and 2002, a second 10m diameter tailrace tunnel was constructed to increase the out-put and to improve the overall hydraulic efficiency and output of the station. A critical economic and project approval consideration for the second tunnel was the outage time required for the breakthrough into the power station. The power station is in part dedicated to providing power to an aluminum smelter with the balance to the National Grid, and apart from the physical problems associated with providing an alter-native power supply to the smelter, the loss of generation revenue and supply risk were significant issues. Innovative planning reduced the planned outage time from several months to21 days, and the breakthrough was eventually achieved in 11 days as a result of additional value engineering measures implemented during construction. This paper describes the engineering optimization that took place during the planning stages of the project and later during construction, as well as describing the construction methodology used.

Traditional iron ore wet beneficiation plants are large multilevel structures, often integrated into centralised processing plants. They are characterised by sizeable footprints, substantial water and power consumption, inflexible design and low scalability. Significant design changes that address these issues need to be made before relocatable modular plants become feasible. Firstly, large amounts of processing water are required in standard wet plants, so it is vital that water consumption is reduced to an absolute minimum. Secondly, the process of depositing tailings into tailings storage facilities (TSFs) is environmentally destructive, consumes significant power and requires lengthy approvals to be completed. Thirdly, modules need to be easily and quickly relocatable.The solution to reducing water usage and eliminating TSF requirements is accomplished by providing a tailings dewatering and dry-stacking capability into a separate module. This equipment needs to dewater tailings to a point (typically below 20 per cent moisture) where dry stacking becomes possible – design is mainly driven by material rheology and particle size distribution (PSD). In this respect, a flexible and scalable strategy is employed to dewatering modules, allowing a variety of components such as dewatering cyclone clusters, paste thickeners, fine mesh vibrating screens and filter presses to be used to achieve the necessary moisture level, enabling the final dry stacking to be accomplished by a simple telescopic stacking system. Plant relocatability also requires modules to comply with mass and dimensional constraints, as well as ‘plug and play’ ease-of-use features.For coarse particle upgrade, jigs provide a low-cost and effective solution, whereas fine and ultra-fine Fe units can be recovered using Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS). Recently, sensor sorting – a dry process using X-ray fluorescence, X-ray transmission, laser or other sensors – has begun to make an impact in coarse particle separation, although capacities are still low. The overall objective of a plant is to provide an Fe upgrade of four to five per cent with a feed of up to 4 Mt/a and a recovery of approximately 50 per cent.CITATION:Graham, T, 2017. This report by the Bureau of Mines is the first of two proposed papers on evaluation of spectrophotometric, spectrographic, polarographic, and other analytical methods for quantitatively determining impurities in high-purity tungsten. Some of the methods described are standard methods that have been successfully applied to determine low-level impurities, several are modifications of known methods, and some procedures are entirely original. The Bureau of Mines is actively engaged in tungsten research because tungsten has an extremely high melting point, in fact the highest of any known metal. The metallurgist must know the content of impurities in tungsten because of the marked effects even micro amounts of impurity elements have on its physical properties. The Bureau procured a number of analyzed samples of above-average purity from research laboratories of companies engaged in production and fabrication of tungsten. These samples were investigated by the analytical procedures of those companies for several metallic impurities. Subsequent analytical laboratory determination of impurities in these samples agreed with the analyses as reported. With this assurance that analytical methods were basically accurate for metallic impurities, procedures for the determination of several of these elements were modified to lower the limits of detection and increase the sensitivity of methods. Carbon and the gases hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen were determined by standard instrumental methods, modified to provide greater sensitivity for reliable determinations when content of these elements was low. After the reliability of the modified procedures was affirmed, they were used as a product evaluation guide in the development of a vapor-plating technique for the production of high-purity tungsten. The following list of elements can be determined by one or more of these methods: AI, B, Be, Ca, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, S1, Sn, Ti, V, and Zn. In addition, a vacuum-fusion method for the determination of H, N, and 0, and a conductometric method for carbon are described. Lower limits of determination and detection for each element listed are given.

Sustainable development is currently an extremely relevant concept worldwide, especially in developing countries like South Africa. Mining and metals companies are also directly affected by the sustainable development agenda. The Mining Charter?s requirements as well as new legislation (Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act) expect, among others, for mines to support infrastructure and poverty eradication projects in the communities surrounding the mines. The aim of this paper is to, against the background of a qualitative study of mining communities in the North-West Province of South Africa, put forward some critical factors for the sustainability of social development projects in the mining sector.

There is an urgent need to use our vast knowledge with a new wisdom and this requires new integrated teams of experts to provide the best alternatives for the needed new development problems. These teams must include economists, engineers and a broad spectrum of scientists. Today it is possible to produce clean energy, stop soil erosion, clean water and reduce and use wastes of many types.   There is a great need to improve science, natural science, education at all levels. All people must know how our planet works and that fluctuations, some inevitable, some controllable, are inevitable and that we must prepare for them. And it is clear that protecting the environment, eliminating pollution, preserving bio diversity is good economics. Ecology Economy cannot be separated.

Yallourn brown coal and its characteristics have been the subject of innumerable papers and discussions. The Lurgi process adopted for the production of Towns gas by the gasification of brown coal has been described frequently in literature.The application of the Lurgi process for the gasification of Yallourn briquettes has naturally lead to some unexpected problems. Rather than attempt to review the whole field of experience gained in the first two years of operation of the gasification plant at Morwell, this paper attempts to describe two problems encountered, peculiar to the fuel used, and the steps taken in overcoming them.THE PROCESS AND PLANTTo clarify the conditions surrounding the problems, it is necessary to briefly describe the gasification and cooling processes and plant.Brown coal briquettes are gasified in a pressure generator, using a mixture of steam and oxygen as a gasifying medium. Crude gas produced in the generator is washed and cooled in the waste heat boiler and coolers. Figure 1 shows an arrangement of the generator and coolers. The gasifying medium enters the generator through a hollow shaft in the base. Issues such as noise, vibrations from mining operations, land use and emissions are often a concern for community residents. In order to develop good community relationships it is necessary to take a proactive approach. This paper documents this approach and also deals with the social implications for Vale associated with mining activities in the heart of the community of Copper Cliff, Ontario, Canada.

This paper reviews recent positive developments in Europe on the regulation of gold mining. However, it also examines the problem that while gold projects may be bankable and technically and environmental defensible, the odds tend to be stacked against granting of an environmental permit. The historic background to this situation is examined and current developments and initiatives are critically analysed. Standards and benchmarks for the industry have been established across the community and these have a strong influence in European Union accession (and aspiring) states as well. While this is welcome in regard to improving environmental performance, it also represents a significant milestone with mining (and particularly gold mining) now æon the mapÆ as a legitimate enterprise, a situation that was patently not the case prior to 2003. At the project level, very frequently, the difficult biophysical problems are addressed and satisfactorily dealt with according to the new regulations, but still there are problems regards trust and acceptance that underpin a æsocial licenceÆ. What goes wrong and how can companies deal with the social/environmental issues that lead to entrenched views and concerns, irrespective of any amount of demonstration of good practice and corporate social responsibility? What is the role of the non-governmental organisation (NGO) and are they as accountable and responsible as they should be? The findings presented draw upon recent experience with the environmental permitting of projects in Spain, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia on behalf of Australian, Canadian and British companies as well as international funding institutions.
