The need to optimize surface mining operations has led to the use of discrete event simulation (DES) modeling of truck-shovel systems. Often, these models assume truck cycle times are independent and identically distributed (iid) random variables, although, with significant bunching on the haul routes, this may not be valid. The objective of this paper is to present a methodology to (i) account for truck bunching due to slow trucks; and (ii) test for cycle time dependence (i.e. whether truck cycle time data is iid or not). We built a DES model that accounts for bunching due to a slow truck(s) and used the cycle times as data for further analysis. We then tested for cycle time dependence using Pearson correlation coefficients. The results show significant correlation of truck cycle times for different number slow trucks, with variable speeds. Assuming iid in modeling results in over-estimation of productivity and the uncertainty surrounding it. The over-estimation of uncertainty is pronounced when the relative difference in truck speed increases. The confidence interval of the means of truck loads/shift decreases with increasing number of slow operators. This work extends the usefulness of DES in truck-shovel applications.

Geochemical projects in progress or recently completed in the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology, and Geophysics (BMR) cover a wide range of topics and include research projects, regional studies, and prospecting programmes. However, in these notes emphasis is given to projects which are directly relevant to mineral exploration.FIELD INVESTIGATIONSStream sediment sampling, rock and soil sampling, and geobotanical surveys have been used by the BMR in a number of areas, partly in attempts to locate specific zones of mineralization, and partly to investigate the effectiveness of the various methods under different conditions of climate and topopraphy and in different geological settings.Stream sediment sampling has been most successful in the Territory of Papua and New Guinea. For example, in the South Sepik area, zones of disseminated su1phide mineralisation were found to give rise to anomalies with peak values of up to 1,000 p.p.m. copper, compared with background values of about 40 p.p.m. (Dow et al., 1968). "Laboratory and miniplant testwork was carried out to reject uranium from an Iron Oxide Copper Gold (IOCG) deposit that contains an average of 60-70 ppm uranium with high variability. The dominate copper bearing mineral is chalcopyrite with minor bornite and trace covellite. The main gangue minerals are iron-rich chlorite, quartz and magnetite. The main uranium-containing mineral is uraninite (UO2). Downstream processes require the maximum uranium level of no more than 80 ppm in final copper concentrate.Mineralogical examination reveals that uraninite particles are finely disseminated with grain size of less than a few microns in the deposit requiring fine regrind in order to liberate uraninite from chalcopyrite particles. A lab flowsheet was developed to include ultrafine regrind of the rougher concentrate to the particle size of 80% passing 11-13 µm with up to four stages of recleaning in flotation columns. Finer regrind to 80% passing 5-6 µm may continue to improve liberation but does not decrease uranium level in the final concentrate. In each of the successive recleaning stages by flotation column after fine regrind, uraninite is rejected into the column tailings, with the final copper gold concentrate containing less than 70 ppm uranium from a feed containing 83 ppm uranium. The conceptual flowsheet was further tested in an integrated, continuous miniplant showing average 94% copper recovery with average 74 ppm uranium. The uraninite particles that report to the final concentrate are either locked with chalcopyrite or entrained as liberated particles of less than 5 µm in size.IntroductionIron Oxide Copper Gold (IOCG) deposits are copper and gold ores hosted within a large body of iron oxide and are significant ore deposits for copper and gold (Williams, et al., 2005). These deposits can also contain economic levels of other metals such as uranium and rare earth elements. The known sizes of IOCG deposits range from 10 to 4,000 million tonnes with grade of 0.2-5% copper and 0.1-3 g/t gold. One of the greatest IOCG deposits is Olympic Dam in South Australia. It is the fourth largest copper deposit and the largest uranium deposit in the world. Gold and silver in the deposit also contribute significantly to the total revenue."

The activities of the Bureau of Mines include the development and testing of self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus and other devices for respiratory protection, the development and tasting of devices for detecting dangerous or noxious mine atmospheres, and the training of men in the mineral industries in the use and care of this equipment to enable them to render effective service in mine rescue and recovery operations following mine fires and explosions, or under other conditions where irrespirable gases may be found in mines or mining plants. The mineralisation consists principally of layered pyrite, phalerite and galena, situated conformably within a sequence of tuffaceous, bituminous shales and dolomitic sediments that include slump breccias. The sediments show little evidence of post sedimentary reconstitution. A volcanic-exhalative-sedimentary origin is postulated for the mineralisation. Attention is drawn to the similarity between the McArthur deposit and the lead-zinc-silver orebodies at Mount Isa. Further evidence is presented as to the widespread occurrence of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in nature in association with sulphide minerals. Leaching rates are discussed in terms of the effect of environmental parameters, particularly Eh and pH, on the bacterial process.The methods used to investigate leaching phenomena are described and the advantages and limitations of each method are discussed. A theoretical treatment of the bacterial leaching process is given which indicates that the optimum conditions arrived at by traditional methods are compatible with those deduced from consideration of the mathematics of continuous culture and thermodynamics

Keywords: SEED, SSM materials, Microstructural evolution, Rheology, Swirling Speed SEED (Swirled Enthalpy Equilibration Device) is established itself as a new technology amongst the many Semi-Solid Metal (SSM) processes, where swirling of the mush plays an important role in modifying the dendritic structure of as-cast parts. A range of semi solid metal structures, dendritic, rosette and/or globular morphology of primary phase, can be prepared using SEED. The current article reports on the application of rheological tests in characterizing microstructural evolution during SSM processing of 356 Al-Si foundry alloy. A simple parallel plate test machine, designed and constructed at our labs, was used to determine viscosity values for each structure and identify the optimum structure with superior die filling characteristics. Such findings have important technological and economical implications during high pressure die casting of semi- solid metals. The strain-time graphs for 356 Al-Si foundry alloy indicated lower viscosity values for globular microstructure, i.e. improved die filling.

Regulations are needed to keep construction vibrations in tolerable limits. The existing regulations were developed for low-rise residential structures, but they are incorrectly used for different super and underground structures. The existing regulations cannot prevent most of harmful vibration effects on sensitive devices, people and structures from construction and industrial vibration sources. It is important to determine the areas of application of the existing regulations and bring attention to the necessity of measurement of the structural responses for assessment of vibration effects on structures. For multi-story residential, commercial and industrial buildings, the frequency-independent safe limit of 51 mm/s (2 in./s) can be chosen for the peak particle velocity of structural, not ground, vibrations. Specifications for construction operations with dynamic sources have to consider specifics of each construction site. Preventive measures can be used to mitigate harmful vibration effects on various structures and settlements in sand and clay soils.

Porous and permeable rocks deeply buried in sedimentary basins contain immense volumes of hot water with the potential to supply low-grade heat energy. A part of Canada with sizeable potential for low-grade geothermal energy is the northern Williston Basin of southern Saskatchewan. In this region, the University of Regina has conducted a geological study investigating the feasibility of producing large quantities of warm water suitable for space heating in the Regina - Moose Jaw area. The study has shown that the most favourable geothermal reservoirs are in the Basal Clastic Unit (Cambrian Ordovician), which, at an approximate depth of 2,000 metres has predicted temperatures of 71°C to 74°C. We anticipate sustainable flow rates from these reservoirs of 100 to 300 ms/hr. The water contains about 150,000ppm of total dissolved solids, mostly sodium chloride. It is anticipated that the sulphate content will be 3,000 to 6,000 ppm, that the dissolved oxygen and hydrogen sulphide content will be small, and that the waters will be neutral to slightly alkaline. It is anticipated that the piezometric level will be 46 m below the ground surface for reservoirs in the upper part of the Basal Clastic Unit and 141m below the ground surface for the lower reservoirs of the unit. Plans are to build a low-grade geothermal research, testing and demonstration facility at the University of Regina. To be a practical demonstration, the facility will have to handle very large volumes of water. Because of high salinity, the water will be re injected into a subsurface reservoir. We do not anticipate insurmountable problems because of salinities or as a result of corrosion provided that the waters are not aerated during handling

The transport of fluid, heat ,and particles (bubbles and solid inclusions) in flowing molten steel is investigated in steel refining ladles, the continuous casting tundish, continuous casting mold and strand, and steel ingot casting processes. The two-equation k-?? model is used to simulate the turbulence. Multiphase fluid flow is numerically simulated with a Lagrangian-Eulerian approach, an Eularian-Eulerian approach and the Volume Of Fluid (VOF) method. The simulation can predict inclusion trajectories, inclusion removal fraction, free surface waves and other phenomena, which can be used to optimize these important metallurgical operations.

The Wyoming Mineral-Conoco Crownpoint Project represents the first time that big hole drilling has been exclusively used to develop totally a privately financed mine below a depth of 1000 feet. Three shafts, one ten feet in diameter and two six feet in diameter, were successfully drilled to depths of 2243', 2188' and 2188' respectively and cased with hydrostatic designed steel casing. The largest shaft is to be used to handle muck and water from station excavation and enlargement of the other two shafts. A reverse circulation system with potassium chloride base mud was used for drilling. The mud was cleaned by settling in steel lined tanks with assistance by cyclone type separators. Deviation was monitored by gyroscopic surveying at 30 foot intervals and did not exceed 16 inches off plumb. Casing was designed to withstand hydrostatic pressures with a 1.5 safety factor to the large shaft and 1.25 safety factor for the smaller shafts. All casing welds were x-ray tested prior to lowering the casing in the hole. Cementing the annular space completed the operation. The total time to mobilize, drill and move off the three shafts was 363 days. The drilling operation was completed ahead of schedule and under budget.

The structure of the Bulli coal seam at Appin Colliery was detailed by the seismic reflection method. This unusual application of the seismic method was possible because there is a reflector near the seam as was revealed during exploration for petroleum in an area north-west of Appin. The reflector, which was at a depth of 1,500 ft, was shallow by normal reflection survey standards. Measurement of the seismic velocity at two ventilation shafts showed that the reflector was probably the Bulli coal seam. Accurate depth control was established from previous drilling results.INTRODUCTIONAppin Colliery, situated on the Southern Coalfield of N.S.W. (Fig. 1), is being developed to supply coking coal to the Port Kembla steelworks of Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd. The colliery is mechanized and a detailed knowledge of structure, particularly faulting, is important in planning the workings.The Bulli seam, which is approximately 9 ft thick, and between 1,500 ft and 1,800 ft below the surface, is worked in the colliery. It is the uppermost member of the Permian Coal Measures and is overlain by Triassic rocks, which consist of thick sandstone beds containing beds of coloured shales, and which are subdivided into the Narrabeen Group, the Hawkesbury Sandstone, and the Wianamatta Group.In the early stages of development of the colliery, surface geological mapping and diamond drilling provided information on structure. Generalized results of the mapping are shown on Fig. 2. Drilling indicated that the physical and chemical properties of the Bulli seam are relatively constant, and that the seam is nearly horizontal, the average dipbeing about 1 in 25 to the west.

THIS paper discusses elementary laws pertaining to seismic reflection methods and presents a general and simple criterion for determining the direction of dipping of a reflection horizon from observational data of distance and time. The important development of practical geophysics and the successful results obtained in America, Germany, and other countries, caused introduction of geophysical methods of prospecting in Poland. Of all methods, seismic prospecting has proved most successful in the area of the Carpathian foreland, where new oil reserves are to be expected. Because of the great depth of the sedimentary column in that area, rang-ing sometimes over 2000 meters, it was obvious that only the seismic reflection method could give reliable information regarding the structural features of these strata at such a depth. During the experimental surveys it appeared that the complicated geological conditions of that area do not always allow prediction of the depth and the angle of dipping of reflecting horizons, and for that reason information about the inclination of a given horizon has great importance in the determination of subsurface structure. Therefore the problem arises of obtaining from seismic reflection data reliable information as to the direction of dipping of reflecting strata, without any previous knowledge of the average velocity and depth of geologic horizons under consideration.

The Kelsey Centrifugal Jig (KCJ) utilizes the application of centrifugal force (and the resultant enhanced gravitational field) to conventional jigging technology principles to successfully process materials where the valuable constituent particulates are very fine and/or where there is a small specific gravity differential between these and the gangue minerals. The KCJ has been successfully employed in mineral sands applications in Australia for approximately 12 years. More recently, the KCJ has been tested and installed on zircon tailings dump retreatment projects in Australia and the USA, while being considered for similar projects in RSA, and is about to be installed in zircon tailings processing duties in India and Africa and in a tin removal duty in a rutile circuit in Australia. Extensive test work has been carried out on these applications and some typical performance data is presented in this paper. Information is also provided on the principles of operation of the KCJ and on the keys to a successful KCJ installation.

Although mining is an old industry its management is quite a new science, and its complications are now being recognised as demanding expert knowledge in many branches of technical and professional education. Not the least amongst these isaccountancy, for probably its most important problem is "How to control the expenditure." Unlike most businesses a mining company stands almost entirely in the light of a purchaser in the world's markets, and not as a seller, except say for product so the established and perfected systems of modern industries cannot be adopted for mining purposes. For this reason it has been left for late years to consider the matter seriously, and now a number of well-managed concerns have devised costs systems to suit their own requirements.Very little, however, has been published and even that is disjoined and difficult to make use of. Some of the costs systems in vogue, although elaborate and imposing, are not of very great value for keeping check on wasteful expenditure, or for displaying the commercial effect brought about 'by any particular change in practice, or by an addition or alteration to a portion of existing plant.

Precipitated calcium carbonate is used as a filler and coating material in the manufacturing of paper because of its high brightness and light scattering characteristics. However, beneficiated calcite has similar potential, given the fact that the industrial specifications are already achieved. For paper industries, the requirement is that the desired product should be pure and have a brightness of 93 to 95 percent. A very-high-grade calcite deposit of around 92 percent is located in the north of Norway, which is used as the raw material for ground calcium carbonate (GCC) feed for the paper industries. There is a substantial amount of calcite resource, which has pyrite and pyrrhotite as major impurities. These sulfides, even when present in minor concentrations, impart color to the end product (paper). Removing these minerals is estimated to increase utilization of the deposit by 10  percent, which represents several million tonnes of calcite marble. Due to the requirement for environmentally friendly reagents and chemicals by the mineral industry, fatty di-amines are being tested for pyrite and pyrrhotite flotation. The interaction mechanism of diamine with the main components of the ore were studied and optimum conditions for removal of sulfide impurities are outlined.
