In the present paper, numerical simulations based on a finite/discrete element approach are used to study deformation and failure process during standard rock mechanics. FEM/DEM modeling has been used as available with the ELFEN code, which explicitly model the transition from continuum to discontinuum. The transition is simulated through a crack nucleation and propagation that obeys to the Griffith?s failure criterion. If the fracture criterion within the intact rock (represented by FEM) is met, a new crack (represented by DEM) is initiated. Remeshing allows the fracture process through the FEM mesh to be tracked and visualized, thus contact properties can be assigned to pre-existing fractures and newly generated fractures. In this study, compressive tests of rock samples are simulated. The applicability of ELFEN to properly and efficiently simulate typical laboratory rock mechanics tests, with reference to the rock fracture process, is described in detail. In addition, an indirect validation of the extensional strain criterion proposed by Stacey (1981) is given.

Since the commissioning of the Tati Hydrometallurgical Demonstration Plant (HDP), which produces Ni and Cu cathodes as well as Co salt from sulphide concentrate employing Activox® technology for leaching, no kinetic data has been generated from the plant under normal operating conditions, from start-up to steady state. Therefore, this study seeks to determine the rate of reactions in the leaching circuit with a view to obtaining kinetic data for the system under the current operating conditions. Within the five-compartment autoclave operating at temperatures of 105°C to 110°C and 1100 kPa pressure, the extraction of Ni, Cu, and Co ions into solution is achieved through the oxidation of the sulphide concentrate using approximately 50 kg H2SO4 per ton, 10 kg NaCl per ton, and 1.21 kg O2 per kilogram of S2-. The autoclave reactions showed complex kinetics, with the reactions proceeding via some intermediate(s) before the formation of products. The results suggest that the reactions were dependent on the size of the metal ion of interest and the concentrations of the metal ions in the Tati concentrate as well as in chloride leaching. The order of the leaching rate constants was Fe2+ > Cu2+ > Ni2+ > Co2+ in all the compartments studied. The rates of leaching were also found to decrease as the concentrate moves from compartment 1 to compartment 4. For compartments 1 to 3, leaching was observed to be preceded by dilution of the repulp liquor (copper raffinate). The leaching rate for compartment 5 was slightly lower than that of compartment 1 but higher than the rates of compartments 2, 3, and 4 for all the metals studied. The recent renewal of interest in hydrometallurgical routes for copper production has been brought about by the possible future reliance on mixed ores and lower grade deposits, environmental aspects, and energy considerations.A number of hydrometallurgical processes for the recovery of copper have recently been proposed. Flowsheets are developed for two processes which incorporate several treatment methods being experimentally studied in Australia.In the first process a cupric chloride leach is followed by electrowinning whilst the second is based on the formation of cuprous ions, stabuized by acetonitrile and subsequent disproportionation to cupric ions and metallic copper. For the purpose of comparison, flowsheets were also developed for the Arbiter and Cymet processes.Process economics are estimated for the four processes and the results are discussed in relation to competitive pyrometallurgy. None of the four hydrometallurgical processes, with possible exception of the Cymet process, appears to be competitive with established large scale and newly developed pyrometallurgical processes for chalcopyrite.However, because the economics of the individual hydrometallurgical processes depend strongly on specific conditions, a "tailored" process may be competitive with pyrometallurgy in particular circumstances.

PC-Strand tendons, commonly referred to as cable bolts, have become a major rock reinforcement device for underground mining and civil applications. The most common configuration is a 1+6 strand, which designates a center king-wire, with six outer wires wound around it to form a 0.6-in (15-mm) diameter cable. The capacity of this tendon approaches 30 tons, but the performance is largely dependent on the anchorage medium and the ability of the system to transfer stresses back into the rock mass while reinforcing and suspending the immediate roof. Recent developments to improve the transfer mechanisms of the PCstrand via the anchorage medium by impregnating the individual wires with uniquely designed deformations have resulted in improved anchorage and subsequent cable bolt performance. This paper describes a series of laboratory tests used to develop the initial indentation patterns and numerical modeling simulations that were undertaken to refine and optimize the final designs. The new, indented PC-Strands, offered in both bright and properly galvanized, have been tested in the field and are being used effectively in two new cable bolt products. The results of the laboratory, computer modeling, field testing and in-situ installations provide a glance at the next generation of cable bolts. This suite of testing shows how they will improve the safety and serviceability of openings under adverse ground conditions.

Scanning electron microscope–Mineral Liberation Analyser SEM-MLA can be used to discriminate between hematite/magnetite in iron ores, but achieving backscattered electron (BSE) segmentation between the two minerals is difficult for particles =75 µm using typical preparation and analysis methods for the MLA based on a tungsten filament SEM (Quanta 400) with 25 kV high voltage. Preparing iron ore sample mounts using a slow-speed polishing method, and conducting the experiment on a field emission gun SEM-MLA (Quanta 650) with the high voltage (HV) setting lowered to 15 kV reduces instrument noise and results in very clean BSE images and segmentation. This method requires new X-ray standards to be acquired for each mineral identity at 15 kV because of major changes in the spectra at lower kV. "High intensity conditioning has been demonstrated in a number of cases to enhance fine particle flotation. The improvement could be attributed to the enhanced formation of particle aggregates. However, the understanding of aggregation mechanisms remains rather limited. Recently, an enhanced particle aggregation was observed by the formation of small air bubbles resulting from high intensity agitations (HIA). In this study, a novel visualization system is designed and constructed for characterizing the fine bubbles formed in an HIA cell. The new design allows determination of gas evolution and bubble size distribution. With this system, the effect of dissolved air on fine bubble generation by HIA is investigated. The results show that HIA creates a favorable environment for the formation of gas nuclei and small size bubbles due to hydrodynamic cavitation.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is a dominant separation technique employed by mineral industry to recover the valuable mineral particles. However, in general, particles finer than approximately 10 µm are not effectively recovered by conventional froth flotation technique due to their low inertia and high specific surface area (Fuerstenau, 1988). Therefore, the fine particle flotation has been considered as the central challenge of flotation research. Substantial advances have been made for fine particle flotation from both a theoretical and technological point of view (Fuerstenau et al., 1979; Song and Lu, 1990; Subrahmanyam and Forssberg, 1990; Sivamohan, 1990; Sedat and Barry, 1991; Matis, 1995). High intensity agitation (HIA), for example, has found some success to improve fine particle flotation kinetics in laboratory tests (Chen et al., 1999a and 1999b; Valderrama and Rubio, 1998; Rubio and De Brum, 1994).The effect of mechanical agitation on flotation kinetics has been recognized for many years. In mid-1970s, Warren (1975) reported that increasing the shear rate of the pulp could improve the efficiency of ultra fine particle flotation. He attributed this improvement in flotation to the formation of aggregates. This concept of aggregation has been extended by Rubio (1978), and Bulatovic and Salter (1989), who employed high intensity agitation (HIA) method to promote aggregation. They found that HIA with the addition of collectors, frothers and suitable modifiers significantly improved both the flotation recovery and selectivity of ultra fine sulphide minerals. The improvement was explained by warren’s shear flocculation theory. Till now, many studies (Chen et al., 1999a and 1999b; Valderrama and Rubio, 1998) have been undertaken to improve fine particle flotation by HIA. However, most of these studies were focused on the relation between energy input and flotation efficiency. Less information was available for describing how the aggregate formed during HIA process."

Radioisotope x-ray methods for the on-stream determination of copper, lead, and zinc in mineral product slurries were developed, and were successfully tested at the plant of Cobar Mines Pty. Ltd.The tests were made in three stages. Measurements to determine the precision of analysis were made initially on briquettes of the mineral products. The effect of slurry solids content variations was then determined by measurements on the mineral products in a recirculating slurry loop. The radioisotope analyser was finally tested in a series of on-stream measurements in the plant.Copper, lead, and zinc in flotation feed and in copper concentrate were determined to a precision ranging between 1·4 and 15 per cent of the mean element concentration in the slurry solids. These precisions are within limits required for plant control purposes at Cobar.

Double rotary drilling combines continuous flight auger drilling with a casing for producing a cast-in-place pile. When producing a pile an outer casing and an auger (hollow auger) rotating inside the casing are driven into the ground in counter-rotation. The outer casing serves to support the surrounding soil and the inner auger excavates the drilling cuttings to the surface inside the casing. After reaching the projected drilling depth concrete is pumped through the hollow stem of the auger and outer casing and auger are extracted. After their complete extraction a reinforcement cage can be inserted in the fresh concrete. Compared to Kelly drilling the double rotary drilling method offers numerous advantages, including, for comparable diameter and length, shorter production times and higher accuracy (pile inclination and excess concrete) combined with increased occupational safety and lower noise emissions. Moreover, pile tests have proved that piles produced by double rotary drilling feature higher axial load-bearing capacities than comparable piles produced by Kelly drilling. This article offers an overview of the basic theoretical principles of double rotary drilling lists the required and currently available machinery and, finally, discusses the results and conclusions of a current jobsite.

The reality of rising electrical power costs and the haunting prospect of decreasing electrical power availability are a threat to the growth of new projects and expansion programmes that could negatively affect the sustainability of mining operations. These threats require the adoption of effective power saving measures aimed at three principal objectives: the elimination of wastage, the reduction of power usage particularly during peak demand periods and, more importantly, improving the efficiency of high power-demand processes. It is reasonable to assume that the greatest impact will be achieved by concentrating on those processes that are large electrical power consumers. For Anglo Platinum operations, mine ventilation and, currently to a lesser extent, mine cooling are two continuous processes that fall in this category. It is estimated that these may consume fifteen to thirty-five per cent of the power delivered to the shaft head-depending on the shaft's design. Mine ventilation systems suffer from inherent, historical inefficiencies that lead to excessive power consumption. Air cooling systems are designed to be energy-wise in terms of modulating refrigeration plant operation to meet the underground requirements while maximizing use of 'free' cooling from surface conditions. Currently about ninety-five per cent of the refrigeration capacity used in Anglo Platinum mines is dedicated to surface bulk air coolers. The net thermal efficiency of these systems is compromised as mines expand in depth and on strike. Looking to the future, this practice will be complemented by more energy demanding underground cooling tactics requiring considerably higher electrical power consumption per unit ton produced. To counter this increase in power consumption, more energy-efficient systems and advantageous transient strategies such as thermal storage and the use of ice-on surface and possibly even underground-are being considered. This paper describes work currently undertaken and planned by Anglo Platinum operations to reduce power consumption by main fans during off-shift periods, the associated efforts currently introduced to reduce underground air leakage, the possibility of introducing more efficient auxiliary ventilation systems, the feasibility of thermal storage, and a brief look at energy recovery system as a means of countering the anticipated power demand associated with underground cooling. "Crushing and grinding are the two most common industrial processes. These processes consume nearly 20 per cent of the entire electric power produced worldwide. This enormous amount of electric power consumed results from the fact that modern crushing and grinding machines employ the processes first introduced by the prehistoric man, namely those of compression, impact, attrition, and cutting. The material thus handled decomposes indiscriminately, and almost completely ignoring the microscopic cracks and other defects of its structure. Apart from the irrational use of the power, the crushing and grinding processes currently in use result in irretrievable loss of useful components or else in a substantial deterioration of the final products obtained, all as a result of incomplete grinding or, reversely, of overgrinding, palletizing, or fracture of particles.The principal type of equipment that has almost universally been used all over the world for more than 150 years for crushing both natural and synthetic minerals comprises unbalanced jaw and cone crushers. The driving element of crushing bodies in these machines is an unbalanced weight, which transfers the crushing body, allowing it to squeeze the material within the eccentricity value only. The maximum reduction ratio achieved by such a drive is 5, which is due to the rigid kinematic arrangement of the crusher, its dynamic unbalance, and the impossibility of increasing the number of impacts on the material being crushed. Moreover, conventional machines cannot cope with super hard materials, and their mechanism is vulnerable to damage by uncrushable objects.On the basis of fundamental research into the theories of solid body and vibration, OAO Mekhanobr- Tekhnika have developed a range of vibrating jaw and cone inertia crushers that make a reduction ratio of 30 feasible in an open-circuit operation with the reduction ratio monitored within a wide range. In these crushers, the eccentric drive is replaced with a vibrating one. In this way the rigid kinematic drive became dynamic, thus allowing pieces of material to be crushed in a thick layer due to the effect of their bumping into each other, and with the amplitude changing automatically. The production of phosphate concentrates (phosphate rock) from slimes represents a challenge to the phosphate industry worldwide. In Brazil, this challenge is particularly relevant due to the consistently low P2O5 grades and the igneous origin. The Brazilian phosphate deposits are made up mainly of apatite from alkaline chimneys, representing 80% of the Brazilian reserves; phosphorite deposits contribute 18% and the other sources (guano, phosphorous bauxite, and apatite from veins) reach 2%. The Brazilian industry beneficiates phosphate ores that are mineralogically more complex than those treated elsewhere. The low apatite grade, inherent to the igneous Brazilian ores, added to the mineralogical complexity due to the weathering of the rocks, has represented a permanent challenge to the Brazilian process engineers. The total measured, indicated and inferred reserves reach 3.2 million tonnes of ore with average grade 11% P2O5. The development of local technology for phosphate beneficiation started in the 1960’s. The first industrial experiences of producing phosphate rock from slimes (-44µm or -325#) fraction started at Arafertil, currently Bunge Fertilizantes SA, in Araxá, in the 1980’s. This production corresponds, nowadays, to 35% of the total production of concentrates in the company (830,000t/year) in a circuit consisting of desliming in 40mm microcyclones and concentration in flotation columns, corn starch and fatty acids being utilised as reagents. The performance of slimes flotation and the process control, at Bunge´s concentrator, were improved after the introduction of column flotation technology, in the first half of the nineties. The column flotation technology for slimes recovery was expanded to other Brazilian concentrators still in the nineties: Ultrafértil (Catalão – GO), Bunge (Cajati – SP), Fosfértil (Tapira – MG) and Copebrás (Catalão – GO). At present the Brazilian production of phosphate rock is approximately 4.5Mt/year, with a strong trend for a market increase. Genuinely Brazilian technology is utilised for the processing of slimes, the concentrates representing 11 to 13% of the overall production. The production of apatite concentrates from slimes was relevant to increase phosphate recovery and reduce costs, contributing to the growth of the fertilisers industry.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B Eng (Min. Eng.) degree A study was conducted to investigated and compare the feasibility of two single level extraction layouts for an intact part of theorebody of the De Beers diamond mine, Koffiefontein. Two layouts were chosen and the tonnage profile, development schedule and production ring blast layouts were calculated by applying the information acquired through a literature study. Current principles used on the mine were also applied. The first layout chosen is described as a simple straightforward layout with 6 production tunnels spaced 15 m apart, and is referred to as Layout A. The second layout, named Layout B, is described as a complex chevron layout with 9 production tunnels spaced 15 m apart. This layout has a rim tunnel situated in the kimberlite ground, which is called a chevron and this made the layout more complex than Layout A. By comparing the financial results of the two layouts, it was found that Layout B is a more feasible option than Layout A. Sensitivity analyses show that both layouts are extremely sensitive to the revenue of the projects. Therefore it is recommended that Layout B can prove to be a source of additional tonnage to add to the total tonnage profile of the mine and to extend the life of mine by 20 months, only if certain financial/economic factors improve. There is, however, still some areas of the project that need to be investigated.

Jet grouting has increasingly become one of the ground improvement technologies used to address seepage concerns and to provide strength improvement of soils. The technique of jet grouting uses high pressure/velocity jet fluids to erode the existing soil and then to mix the cuttings with cement slurry to form soilcrete. Excess slurry or spoil is ejected to the surface. If the native soil is not completely mixed with slurry, the resulting columns will have soil inclusions which can reduce the strength of the column and/or increase the permeability of the column. A jet grout test program at Tuttle Creek Dam shows that the completed large diameter columns contain perhaps 40 to 50% or more of native soil that was not broken up and mixed during the jet grout process. The test program included excavation of full-scale columns to a depth of 35 ft (10.7 m) for visual inspection and testing. Additionally, six of the columns were cut or sectioned to investigate the interior of the columns. The observed inclusions include significant amounts of both fine grained (silts and clays) and coarse grained (fine sands and sands) soils. Evidence suggests at least two explanations: (1) fine grained soils can be difficult to erode and break up into small enough particles that can be ejected to the surface, especially if at low natural water content, and (2) when large diameter columns are being excavated, the excavated roof of the cylindrical cavity may be unstable and may collapse. With this roof instability large slabs of material can break off, fall into the slurry and escape the cutting and mixing action of the rotating jets. This paper describes the Tuttle Creek Dam test program, inclusions observed in the completed columns, and suggests potential causes of the inclusions.

The site of the First Quality Tissue plant is located on a previous paper production facility in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. The new development, which included the construction of a tissue machine building, baled building, converting building, various storage buildings and an electrical switchgear building, required the use of deep foundation systems to transfer loads below compressible fill and alluvial soils. Loading details provided by Jacobs Engineering, the project structural engineer, detailed braced steel frame buildings with typical column loads ranging from 75 to 150 kips and slab live loads of 250 to 300 psf. As an exception to this, however, the tissue machine and stock preparation building, which had a roof height ranging up to 85 feet, had column loads ranging up to 800 kips in addition to high dynamic loads. The First Tissue plant is located in a river valley in the hills of Western Pennsylvania. To evaluate the proposed site conditions and to formulate recommendations for the structure foundations, a geotechnical study was performed by the owner. Approximately 30 borings were advanced to bedrock, with wire-line coring performed in the tissue machine building. The borings disclosed a soil profile comprising of the following:

"Ore grades are declining and getting more complex around the world which not only complicate the ore processing but also produce new type of requirements to manage the produce waste streams. One specifically problematic and increasingly identified element in waste streams produced in mining and metallurgy is arsenic.Arsenic is a compound that has no significant market value, but that needs to be removed from ores, concentrates and other process streams because of environmental or process technical reasons. One example of a removal process is partial roasting of high-As sulfide concentrates, originally developed by Outotec. In this process the arsenic is volatilized in the gas phase and thus separated from the solid material, i.e. the calcine. If the arsenic is recovered by wet methods the process gas is quenched and all arsenic needs to be stabilized in the effluent treatment plant.Outotec has developed ferric arsenate precipitation as a method to produce stabile arsenic residues from wet gas cleaning effluents. Iron based precipitates, when correctly produced, can meet typical landfill criteria measured with different types of leaching methods meant for characterizing the arsenic dissolution behavior from the precipitates.In this paper partial roasting of sulfide concentrates with arsenic volatilization in combination with ferric arsenate precipitation is discussed from the perspective of producing wastes that can meet the stability requirements set by common leaching tests methods, TCLP and CEN. These leaching test methods set the normative landfill requirements for most operations generating arsenic containing wastes. A typical flow sheet of Outotec® Ferric arsenate process is discussed with results showing the importance of correct process control and sequence on producing arsenic containing waste that can meet the landfill disposal requirements."

The conventional practice in open cut coal strip mining has been to blast the overburden or coal layers in separate blast events. This is done in order to maximise the benefits from throw blasting and also to limit coal losses. Each blast event usually has a particular design of hole diameters, burdens and spacings, explosive charges and blast timing in order to achieve the required blast outcome for either the overburden or coal. This means that each blast has to be separately cleaned on the surface after excavation of the previous blast. Hole locations then have to be individually surveyed and marked, holes drilled, explosives and initiators loaded and the blast fired. Each of these actions takes considerable time and resources and therefore impacts on mine productivity. The mine has to be cleared for each blast event and every blast presents a new potential source for noise, dust or vibration disturbance to the neighbouring population. Exposed highwalls are also subjected to vibration and damage from each subsequent blast event

"In late 1985, B-zone ore was first processed through the Eldor Mines mill at Rabbit Lake. Extensive modifications had been completed in order to mill this ore. In-plant process development was initiated to tune up the new circuits and concentrated on leaching, solvent extraction, impurity and uranium precipitation and tailing and effluent treatment. This process development effort and the results are described.INTRODUCTIONEldor Mines, a division of Eldorado Resources Limited, operates the Rabbit lake mine-mill complex at Collins Bay on the western shore of Wollaston Lake in northeastern Saskatchewan.The first orebody was discovered in 1968 by Gulf Minerals Canada Limited below a small body of water named Rabbit Lake. Ore from the Rabbit Lake (RL) deposit was first processed through the new mill in June, 1975, with depletion scheduled over the next ten years. Continued exploration in the area led to the discovery of four orebodies in the vicinity of Collins Bay: A-zone (1971), B-zone (1977), D-zone (1978) and Eagle Point (1980). Collins Bay is about ten kilometres from the mill facility.In 1982, Gulf Minerals was acquired by Eldorado Nuclear Ltd., who continued the development effort to bring the B-zone deposit into production. The RL pit was mined out in May, 1984 with stockpiled ore providing mill feed until startup on B-zone ore, which was scheduled for November, 1985."

Previous paleodepth studies of low-sulphidation epithermal Au-Ag deposits in the Coromandel region indicated that economic gold mineralisation was generally limited to a depth zone of 100 to 400 m below the paleosurface. Notable exceptions are Waihi and Karangahake, where ore shoots extended to depths of about 750 and 900 m respectively. These studies have been extended to include Au-Ag, Hg and Sb epithermal deposits in Northland and the Taupo Volcanic Zone. The main paleodepth indicators used are sinters and hydrothermal eruption breccias, hydrostatic pressures estimated from homogenisation temperature measurements on fluid inclusions, and hydrothermal alteration mineralogy. Also the occurrence of lacustrine and fluvial sediments is an indicator of the paleosurface at their time of deposition. Selected paleodepth indicators have been compiled and mapped in a GIS environment. The distribution of the paleodepth indicators are used to define regional variations in erosion levels, and may be useful in predicting areas most likely to preserve the optimum depth window for gold deposition. In the Coromandel region, regional stream sediment geochemical data has also been used to broadly define erosion levels in terms of Zn, Pb and Cu representing deeper base metal zone mineralization and Hg and Sb representing shallower cinnabar and stibnite mineralisation. The interpretations of paleodepth and potential reconstruction of paleosurfaces are limited by the paucity of data, poor age control on the paleodepth indicators and the epithermal deposits, and marked relief and complex stratigraphy in the volcanic terranes.
