INTRODUCTION Kerckhoff-2 is a 140 MW underground hydro-electric project designed and owned by Pacific Gas and Electric Company and constructed between May, 1980 and May, 1983 by Auburn Constructors. The project is located in the western foothills of the Central Sierra Nevada Mountains, about 30 miles northeast of Fresno, California, and develops the power potential of the lower San Joaquin River and its tributaries between the existing Kerckhoff and Millerton Lakes. The Kerckhoff-2 Project consists of project roads, adits, and access tunnels, service tunnels, power tunnels, powerhouse, tailrace tunnel surge shaft, buss shaft, intake structure, discharge structure, and switchyard. In the 1920s, the Kerckhoff 1 project, consisting of a dam, reservior, tunnel, and 34 MW powerhouse, was built in the same general area as Kerckhoff-2. The tunnel was constructed by conventional methods, and was left unlined. In time, other projects were built upstream, allowing the flow of the San Joaquin River to be regulated. The Kerckhoff 2 project is designed to harness that regulated flow, providing an additional 140,000 ON of power. Kerckhoff 2 will be the primary power plant; Kerckhoff I will produce power whenever the flow rate exceeds 4,800 cubic feet. The new power tunnel is built along the east side of the San Joaquin River between Kerckhoff and Millerton Lakes, parallel to the existing tunnel but extending approximately one mile further downstream.

Beutter's introductory remarks, being simply a resume of Prof. Hone's paper, with a disclaimer of the intention to criticise it, have been omitted, and the remainder of this contribution lias been somewhat condensed, without omitting any essential statements. M. Beutter, St. Etienne, France* (communication to the Secretary†):—Professor Home observes in $ 47 of his paper that the fluid-compression of steel diminishes piping by forcing the liquid and viscous metal, while the pipe is forming, or after it has formed, into the space so produced, and proceeds to study the different systems of compression, alluding to the four principal ones: Whitworth, Illingmorth, Williams, and Harmet. Having now for many years had in use the last-named process, that of M. Henri Harmet, I shall attempt to explain the difference between it and the three other processes named. The Harmet process does not diminish or close the pipe after it has formed, but prevents it from forming; and I may add that it is the only one of the four which produces this result. It is true that the Whitworth process diminishes the interior hollow by localizing it around the central axis of the ingot, which is afterwards removed by trepanning the hollow forg-ings for which this process has been, I believe, always exclusively used. The Illingworth and Williams processes, which, in my opinion, are applicable only to small ingots, of necessity allow the pipe to form, or (to use the expression of Professor Howe) they allow the surface of the lake of liquid steel to sink into the interior of the ingot, since they involve waiting a certain time before compression, so that (in the case of the Williams process) the ingot-mold can be opened without danger, or (in the case of the Illingworth process) so as to avoid the risk that the steel may enter the grooves produced by the removal of the distance-bars. The business of mineral exploration and development has become much more than simply a problem of locating orebodies and designing mines. Favorable economic analysis of mining and processing feasibility is no longer sufficient to justify the development of a mine. New laws, enacted by virtually every level of government, require comprehensive land use planning, environmental analysis, mineland reclamation, mine safety studies, and many other considerations. This profusion of new laws says in effect, that the mining company is no longer responsible only to its stockholders. Mineral development today can be compared to a partnership. As in all partnerships, the risks and liabilities as well as the benefits are held jointly by all the participants. In addition to the mining operator, this partnership consists of the public, through its many levels of government, interest groups, and individual citizens. Therefore, you'd better know your partner very well - his responsibilities and capabilities. Mining is considered a high risk venture. The risk on the part of the operator and the lending institutions has long been recognized. The risk that the public and its government take in these mining ventures has now been recognized also. The people and their government have learned that they inherit, through abandonment or forfeiture, the mistakes and problems of individuals and companies regarding these natural resources. In looking through the "Mining Engineering Handbook" recently published by the Society of Mining Engineers, I noted that in their discussion of liability for excavations, the authors quoted from the book of Exodus, 20th chap., where Moses said to his people: "When a man leaves a pit open, or when a man digs a pit and does not cover it, and an ox or an ass falls into it, the owner of the pit shall make it good; he shall give money to its owner, and the dead beast

The Sishen iron-ore-mine produces 3 pro= ducts with size gradings of 25 to 8 mm, 11 to 5 mm and 5 to 0,2 mm and has a product capacity of 20 Mtpa. Ore is produced at an average Fe content of 66,2 % Fe for the two coarser pro= ducts and an average of 65,3 % Fe for the fine ore product. Three stage crushing is practised to re= duce the run-of-mine ore to -90 mm after which it is screened into five different size frac= tions of which four are heavy media beneficiated in static baths and cyclones and the fifth frac= tion discarded to slimes dams. A final three stage crushing and screening process is employed to produce the final three Products which are homogenized by means of blen=ding systems nrinr to despatch.

Este trabalho estuda a obtenção do cobalto metálico a partir da redução de pós de óxido de cobalto (Co3O4) usando como agentes redutores o plasma frio de hidrogênio e o gás de hidrogênio. A redução a plasma foi realizada sob tensão de 540 V e largura do pulso na faixa de 140-170ms, e da mesma forma que na redução a gás foram usadas as seguintes condições: fluxo de 300 cm3/min de hidrogênio, pressão de 530 Pa, temperaturas de 250º, 300ºC, 350ºC e 380ºC e tempos de 10 a 120 min. Os resultados mostraram que o processo de redução ocorre em duas etapas: Co3O4?CoO?Co. Na parte mais externa das partículas parcialmente reduzidas verificou-se a presença de altas concentrações de cobalto e no centro das mesmas, altas concentrações de oxigênio, o que indica que a redução se dá da superfície para o núcleo. Constatou-se que em 300oC após 120 min é possível obter frações de metal reduzido aproximadas de 0,93 quando é utilizado o plasma frio de hidrogênio, enquanto o gás permite obter frações de apenas 0,3. A energia de ativação para a redução por plasma de hidrogênio é de 35,38 kJ/mol, ao passo que a associada ao gás de hidrogênio é de 90,79 kJ/mol.

O aço inoxidável ferrítico tipo 430 estabilizado com Nb, com e sem recozimento após laminação a quente, foi laminado a frio e submetido a recozimentos isotérmicos em temperaturas de 650, 700, 750 e 800°C por tempos variando entre 10 e 86400 s. A quantificação da fração recristalizada foi realizada pelo modelo de JMAK e pela microdureza ao longo do recozimento. A evolução da textura foi analisada via técnica de EBSD. Ocorreu o refino de grão após a recristalização, resultando em um tamanho médio de 8 mm. A temperatura de recristalização aconteceu a 750°C e esta teve maior efeito na recristalização que o tempo. Os expoentes de Avrami se situaram entre 0.8 e 1.2, significando nucleação em contorno de grão. A taxa de nucleação e de crescimento do grão diminuiu continuamente com o tempo. Em relação à textura, observou-se um aumento da intensidade das componentes (111)[121] e (111)[011] da fibra g e diminuição na intensidade da fibra a de deformação. Um modelo de cinética de recristalização do aço tipo 430 estabilizado com nióbio que leva em conta os processos de nucleação e crescimento foi obtido.

O objetivo deste trabalho é de identificar estratégias para avaliação da conta de energia de unidades industriais, que sirvam de subsídio para o processo de tomadas de decisão e que eventualmente forneçam benefícios econômicos imediatos, sem investimento. Para esse fim, aplica-se uma metodologia simples que consiste em três aspectos: avaliação da demanda contratada, análise de modicidade tarifária e averiguação de excesso de consumo de energia reativa. Apresenta-se um estudo de caso da aplicação dessa metodologia em uma unidade produtiva de distribuição de aço. Nesse estudo, observa-se redução de custos por se evitar penalidades tanto de ultrapassagem de demanda quanto de excesso de energia reativa, representando uma economia de aproximadamente 15% do valor total da conta de energia elétrica da unidade.

Two Arvedi ESP plants going into operation in 2015 will allow a Chinese steel producer to better serve the extremely attractive local and export markets for high-quality, thin-gauge strip products. The energy consumption and the related costs are reduced by up to 45% compared to conventional casting and rolling processes. This also means a major reduction in CO2 emissions. The new plants are designed for an annual production capacity of 2 x 2.55 million tons of high-quality, ultra-thin, hot-rolled strip products with widths of up to 1,600 mm and thicknesses down to 0.8 mm. The project scope also features a comprehensive training and assistance package for plant start-up and operations by personnel from the existing ESP plant at Acciaieria Arvedi SpA, Italy. The plant setup, the trainings and assistance program as well as latest results from the ESP plant in Italy will be presented. While this project is under execution three further ESP lines have been ordered by the same customer summing up now to five ESP lines at the same location.

Os desafios para o aprimoramento do desempenho operacional dos altos-fornos constituem um campo aberto para o desenvolvimento e aplicação de métodos de controle que promovam a otimização da operação do reator, aliada ao prolongamento da sua vida útil. O Alto-Forno 3 da Usiminas - Ipatinga, nesta sua 4ª campanha, foi projetado para 15 anos de operação, com uma produção estimada de 41 milhões de toneladas de gusa. Os resultados da campanha atual, em termos de produção e de duração da campanha, superam os dados projetados. Neste contexto, são apresentadas as principais características do Alto-Forno 3 na sua atual campanha, a evolução do seu desempenho em termos de produtividade e tempo de operação, além das principais ações direcionadas para a preservação e estabilidade do sistema de refrigeração e do cadinho, contribuindo para o prolongamento da sua vida útil. Como resultado destes esforços, a vida útil estimada do Alto-Forno 3 é de 22 anos, superando em 7 anos a duração prevista.

In today’s competitive steelmaking environment, the optimization and continuous supervision of the blast furnace process is of major importance. Modern probes and process measurement systems can assess the specific operation of the blast furnace. They provide a better and detailed process understanding and control. The benefits are even more important when they are combined with process models and expert systems. Everyday operation, productivity and even the lifetime of a blast furnace can be significantly improved by collecting, interpreting and acting upon such process data correctly. Only a comprehensive knowledge of the various process phenomena together with measurement of process variables inside the blast furnace enables the operators to optimize coke and fuel rates, to run the blast furnace smooth, reliable, and safe, and to make best use of the available raw materials. While the improvement of the blast furnace process with respect to productivity remains the main task, also, the timely identification of abnormalities and the assessment of process variations is an objective. This paper describes the blast furnace measurement systems that are available for everyday automatic use and provides an understanding for the possibilities of modern probes. The different applications are daily blast furnace supervision, charging process optimization, and observation of the internal state. Finally, the paper gives recommendations on probe configurations for different blast furnaces sizes, considering both a technical and an economical point of view.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo estudar a resistência ao crescimento de trinca por fadiga de juntas soldadas de aços inoxidáveis ferríticos do tipo UNS S40910 e UNS S41003, com entalhe na ZTA. Os ensaios de fadiga foram realizados em juntas soldadas com alta e baixa energia de soldagem realizadas pelo processo GMAW, tendo como metal de adição o consumível austenítico ER 308 LSi, e em amostras do metal de base de ambos os aços. Os ensaios foram realizados sob controle de carga com a amplitude de carregamento constante, e razão R entre tensões de 0,1. Os resultados foram obtidos na forma de curvas (da/dN) vs. ?K, com caracterização das regiões I e II do crescimento de trinca por fadiga. Analisou-se também os aspectos microestruturais e fratográficos por intermédio de microscopia ótica e microscopia eletrônica de varredura, respectivamente, como suporte para se justificar o comportamento sob fadiga das amostras. Embora os dois aços tenham comportamento distinto, pode-se concluir que as juntas soldadas não apresentaram efeito do aporte térmico, não sendo influenciados pelas alterações microestruturais existentes na ZTA.

O início de operação da companhia Siderúrgica do Pecém foi um grande marco para a tecnologia e economia do estado do Ceará. O alto-forno é parte principal da área denominada “Redução”, onde ocorre o processo de transformação das matérias primas (carvão, coque e minério de ferro) no produto ferro-gusa que é a principal matéria prima para o processo de fabricação de aço. A robustez dos equipamentos permite larga capacidade produtiva e por isso ainda é a melhor tecnologia capaz de atender à demanda mundial no consumo de aço. Este trabalho apresenta o plano de início de operação e estabilização do processo do alto-forno, denominado “Início de Sopro”, apresenta os parâmetros definidos para o direcionamento operacional, os índices de performances que balizaram a assertividade no atendimento às metas planejadas. Neste trabalho é possível visualizar os procedimentos para as etapas de comissionamento dos principais equipamentos, a curva de elevação de produção, o atendimento às especificações conforme mensuradas no projeto e os resultados obtidos que sustentaram o sucesso do evento.

A equipe da Coqueria identificou a possibilidade de reduzir o Burn Loss, que é a perda de material por queima durante o processo de coqueificação. Após uma série de estudos, utilizando a metodologia Seis Sigma, identificou-se oportunidades de melhorias operacionais que trariam mais eficiência, estabilidade operacional e consequente aumento na produção de coque e vapor, tais como: maior controle na admissão de ar, controle das perdas de coque e carvão, vedação dos fornos de coque e execução de paradas programadas específicas para Preservação Refratária, com foco na redução do back log e consequente prolongamento da vida útil das baterias de fornos de coque. A redução Burn Loss aumenta o rendimento coque/ carvão, com consequente redução do consumo específico de carvão e aumento na produção de coque e vapor. A implantação desse projeto permitiu a redução de 2,5 dólares por tonelada de aço produzida no Fiscal Year 16/17.

A produção siderúrgica em usinas semi-integradas gera resíduos de processo, dentre os quais pó de aciaria elétrica (PAE). A presença de zinco e os custos crescentes para a disposição deste resíduo são fatores de motivação para sua reciclagem ou incorporação em outros materiais. Entretanto, fatores como o teor de zinco e as espécies minerais existentes, têm influência no processamento do PAE. Adicionalmente, a presença de outros elementos como o chumbo, cromo e o cloro muitas vezes afetam de modo determinante os processos de reciclagem ou aproveitamento. Neste estudo, após análise, são feitas considerações acerca da influência da composição do PAE em processos piro e hidrometalúrgicos de reciclagem. Complementando o trabalho, são feitas simulações sobre o possível comportamento de algumas espécies químicas do PAE em processos de reciclagem, com auxílio da ferramenta termodinâmica computacional FactSage.

Automobile manufacturers are developing Electrified Vehicles with light steel body structure designs that reduce mass and therefore greenhouse gas emissions over the vehicle’s entire life cycle. This raises the demand for the production and development of Advanced and Ultra High-Strength Steels (AHSS / UHSS) and Electrical Steels with increased permeability and reduced core loss to improve energy conversion efficiency. To meet this requirements the steel market is tending towards new generations of AHSS with improved formability (3rd generation AHSS) and high-silicon steels with higher strength and thinner products. With this growing demand for advanced high-strength steels and electrical steels, producers are faced with a unique and interesting challenge in producing materials that strain or exceed the capabilities of existing mill equipment and automation designed to produce low- to medium-carbon sheet. While specialty steel producers have known for decades how to process special high-strength steels and thinner gauges, this equipment typically does not offer the yield and productivity desired by the market, necessitating innovation in re-engineering existing equipment to meet the market demands more economically than new construction. In the case of cold rolling, this can be supported through variable roll geometries, more effective roll-gap lubrication technologies, application of strip heaters (Warm Rolling) to reduce risk for edge crack propagation and strip breaks as well as continuous rolling managed by state-of-the-art automation technologies.

The market demand for reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in the automotive, energy and construction sectors have further increased the demand for new and advanced higher quality microalloyed grades produced via TMCP. The technological integration of the process and physical metallurgical advancements of value-added niobium (Nb) microalloyed thermo-mechanical controlled process (TMCP) steels continue to be developed and is an important element for these more demanding end user requirements and cost-effective steel production. The reheat furnace process step has a profound effect on the TMCP performance, final hot rolled steel quality and mechanical property consistency during the production of hot rolled steels. The uniformity of heating applied across the entire width, thickness and length of the slab or billet is essential in the successful achievement of consistent customer properties regardless of the chemistry. The resultant ferrite grain size in the final hot rolled product is significantly governed by the initial prior austenite grain size. However, the transition from laboratory melted and TMCP hot rolled heats to the production scale is often quite challenging. Aberrations in the reheating process step at the industrial furnace are often the root cause of mechanical property quality issues. Os aços inoxidáveis duplex (AIDs) são ligas metálicas que possuem uma microestrutura bifásica constituída por frações volumétricas aproximadas de ferrita () e austenita (). Esta microestrutura proporciona ao material uma combinação atrativa de propriedades mecânicas e de resistência à corrosão. O desbalanço das frações volumétricas destas fases pode ocorrer quando os AIDs são expostos a temperaturas elevadas, seja durante os processos de produção, soldagem ou até mesmo em condições de serviço e podem provocar alterações indesejadas nas propriedades da liga. Nesse contexto, a utilização de metodologias eficientes que permitam avaliar quantitativamente as frações dessas fases em AIDs é de grande relevância. Diante disso, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar e comparar os resultados da aplicação das técnicas de estereologia quantitativa e ferritoscopia para quantificar as frações de  em amostras de um aço duplex UNS S31803 (2205) submetidas a um tratamento térmico de solubilização a 1050°C e diferentes intervalos de tempo de envelhecimento a 850°C. Concluiu-se que o ferritoscópio subestima os valores da fração de , quando comparado com a estereologia quantitativa. Parâmetros como textura, distorções na rede cristalina, geometria da amostra e padrões de calibração exercem influência em sua medição. Sendo assim, a estereologia quantitativa mostrou-se como a técnica mais adequada para a quantificação de fases nos AIDs.

Perfluoromethylcyclohexane (PMCH), a member of the perfluorocarbon tracer group of compounds, has been shown to be a viable supplement to the widely used tracer gas sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). This viability stems from the fact that PMCH can be used concurrently with SF6 while maintaining adequate chromatographic separation and comparable sensitivity during analysis. However, the release of PMCH in an underground mine ventilation system is challenging due to its physical characteristics. While SF6 exists as a gas at room temperature and pressure and can be accurately released by a variety of means, PMCH exists as a volatile liquid at room temperature and pressure, preventing it from being deployed in a similar manner. One method to release PMCH is to use a permeation plug passive release vessel (PPRV), which allows for the controlled release of the gas. This paper presents the results of a study evaluating various preparation techniques, plug thicknesses and plug materials of an aluminumvessel PMCH release source, so that a source appropriate for the mine scale may be developed.

Research by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has shown that heat/humidity buildup is a major concern within coal mine refuge alternatives. High temperature and humidity levels inside a refuge alternative may expose occupants to heat stress. Due to the safety risks associated with testing using human subjects, NIOSH partnered with ThermoAnalytics Inc. to create detailed thermal simulation models of refuge alternatives with human occupants. The objective of this effort was to predict a miner’s core temperature response and moisture loss in environments that may be encountered in a coal mine refuge alternative. These parameters were studied across a range of temperatures and relative humidity values to determine if the current 35 °C (95 °F) apparent temperature limit for refuge alternatives is reasonable. The results indicate that the apparent temperature limit is protective, provided that miners are supplied with sufficient water. The results also indicate that the body core temperature does not reach dangerous levels even at an apparent temperature of 54 °C (130 °F). However, the results show that moisture loss increases with apparent temperature. Therefore, if the apparent temperature limit were raised, the water provided in a refuge alternative would have to be increased to offset moisture loss.
