In the past few years, the numbers of underground coal mines in this country using longwa11 mining method have been dramatically increased. In the latest count there are approximately 90 10ngwa11 faces amounting roughly 8% of the total underground production. Meanwhile, shortwall mining adapting longwa11 powered supports to 'coal mining and handling systems in room and pillar mining is also gaining importance in the Appalachian coal field. Although there are only 7 operating shortwall faces so far, indications are that it will be increasing steadily. Modern longwall faces are highly mechanized and productive. One of these key elements that contribute to the success of modern longwall mining is self-advanced powered supports. There are several types of powered supports. Frame type is two sets of one to four hydraulic legs supporting beam-type roof canopy and floor base. However, chock type is more popular and connected to broad roof and base structure. Shield supports were introduced recently but proved to be highly successful (1). A shield support consists of two hydraulic jacks mounted between a base plate and a gob shield. The base plate is hinged to gob shield which is in turn hinged to roof canopy.

Open pits and quarries are the major sources of all "hard rock" tonnage mined today. Normally, ore is fractured from the pit face by blasting and then truck-hauled to a primary crusher where processing begins; over- burden (or waste) is generally truck-hauled from the pit to dump areas. Truck haulage of blasted ore and overburden accounts for some 25 to 50 percent of total mining costs in a typical open pit and commonly is the largest single cost factor. Obviously then, cost reduction efforts should properly focus on improving existing haulage systems and developing new breakthrough techniques for material transport. Continuous flow systems for large tonnages ordinarily will result in a lower cost than batch systems such as truck or rail haulage. Continuous flow with pipelines for liquids and slurries, or conveyors for medium to coarse dry materials (in the -8 in. range) are the accepted economic answers for bulk materials handling over reasonable distances.

"Deep mixing (DM) method, one of the most commonly used solidification methods, is based on the principle of solidifying soft ground. It can be classified into two categories such as Cement Deep Mixing (CDM) method and Dry Jet Mixing (DJM) method which apply hardening agent in slurry condition and in powdery condition respectively. In recent years, DM methods have undergone changes that have evolved them from the traditional method to meet the needs of the diversifying market. Among them, the Contrivance-Innovation Clay Mixing Consolidation (CI-CMC) method is a DM method which mixes a cement-type hardening agent in slurry condition mechanically with soils in situ and incorporates the innovative technique, “atomized ejection” that has been developed to allow faster installation of larger diameter columns without sacrificing quality compared with conventional methods. At this technique, the atomized hardening agent is discharged together with compressed air through a device incorporated into the mixing blade. It also has advantages of performing the works with low-displacement of the surrounding soils in consideration of environmental friendliness and with higher penetration capability against hard ground.This paper presents the technological outline of the above-mentioned CI-CMC method, focusing on the atomized-ejection technique, followed by some construction examples, applied to the self-earth-retaining wall, to the hard ground and the area adjacent to the existing structures.INTRODUCTIONAccording to the accumulation of its case histories, Deep Mixing method has been receiving the demands of its application to more challenging conditions, such as harder ground condition, and requirement of lower displacement of the surrounding ground during its operation. In addition, to match its price against the other cheaper methods and widely receive its benefit of higher quality, the cost reduction of Deep Mixing is also one of the major challenges. For the cost reduction, higher productivity and lower consumption of the material to obtain the equivalent strength and homogeneity with the conventional method are required.The Contrivance-Innovation Clay Mixing Consolidation (CI-CMC) method has been developed to meet these demands. CI-CMC incorporates the mist ejection that has been developed to achieve faster installation of larger diameter columns without sacrificing quality compared with the existing methods. Normally, we obtain cement columns of about 1.0 m in diameter by using Deep Mixing method. To increase the productivity, it is not preferable to drastically increase the penetration and withdrawal speed of the mixing blades because of the hardness of the ground and restriction by minimum number of passage of rotating blades per a certain height of the soil cement. Instead, the expansion of diameter of the columns will simply increase the productivity. The development of the new mist ejection system, as shown in Photo 1, has enabled the diameter of soil cement columns to 2.0 m on single axis while 1.6 m on double axes. Mist ejection means that the hardening agent slurry is sprayed into the ground in mist form together with compressed air thereby achieving homogeneous mixing and reducing the resistance on rotating blades."

A mine waste dump progression plan can provide a clear outlook of the mining operation. To produce such an output requires detailed placement schedule of the mined material, including the volume (or tonnage) and the allocated dumping location. However, current practise mainly focuses on the ore production, over-simplifying the waste material scheduling. As a result, a rock dump is often treated as a single point in long-term planning, making it difficult to predict the waste dump progression pattern over the life-of-mine. Without such a guidance, it is almost impossible to carry out progressive rehabilitation on the waste rock dumps. The lack of dumping schedule could cause delay in development construction, ie tailing storage facility and run-of-mine pad. Other downstream effect due to the over-simplification is inaccurate estimation of required truck hours, which could have huge financial impact on the operation.In this paper, mixed integer programming (MIP) models of different objective functions, ie maximise truck productivity by minimising the overall haulage distance, minimise required truck deviation between adjacent years, and a hybrid between the two objectives, are utilised to generate the long-term optimum rock placement schedules under the criteria of satisfying site specific conditions. All three MIP models are implemented in a large scale open pit mine. The numerical solutions from the models forms three different rock placement schedules, based on which, the yearly truck requirements are easily calculated and compared. The Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Air Act of .1970 provided the driving force for the current Magma Smelter configuration. The historical and technical perspectives of those process developments are reviewed. Innovations in procedures and equipment have allowed compliance with the requirements of the regulating authorities. The wet scrubbing of converter gasses and the monitoring of converter operations by a controlling foreman are two of the major contributors to these successes. The Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 have posed many new concerns for all U.S. industry, including the few (seven) primary copper smelters remaining. Future concerns include tightening the sulfur dioxide ambient standard from the current three-hour averaging period to one hour"

"This paper describes development of an integrated chloride process for separation and purification of REEs. The process includes atmospheric leaching of ore/concentrate with mixed chloride lixiviant containing HCl and MgCl2 followed by bulk recovery of REEs, dissolution of the bulk intermediate product, and separation of individual REEs by solvent extraction (SX) process steps. Mixed chloride leaching technology provides the opportunity to regenerate the lixiviant, while the addition of MgCl2 in HCl enhances the hydrogen ion activity by orders of magnitude increasing REE extraction efficiency at a lower concentration of HCl. An individual REE separation process developed by Innovation Metals Corp. is being piloted at a state-of-the-art facility at Process Research ORTECH Inc. in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. The SX process includes the separation of light REEs (La – Nd), medium REEs (Sm – Gd) and heavy REEs (Tb – Lu plus Y) from leach liquor followed by individual REE separation. Each SX circuit proceeds by multistage extraction followed by scrubbing and stripping. The process is chloride based and reagents are recycled, reducing waste generation and optimizing water usage to reduce environmental impact.INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements (La to Lu plus Y) exhibit a range of unique magnetic, electronic, catalytic and optical properties. Due to these special properties, the application of REEs is increasing and they are found in components for wind power generation, hybrid electric cars, catalytic converters, and many electronic devices.Rare earth elements (REEs) are commonly divided in two groups: light rare earth elements (LREEs) and heavy rare earth elements (HREEs). Light rare earth elements include elements from lanthanum (La) to neodymium (Nd). Although promethium (Pm) is considered an LREE it is unstable and scarcely occurs in nature and is generally excluded. Heavy rare earth elements include elements from samarium (Sm) to lutetium (Lu) plus yttrium. Although rare earth elements are not rare and the rare earth oxides are scattered around the globe, over 95% of REEs+Y are currently produced in China (Pitts, 2011). On one hand the Chinese government is restricting the export of rare earth elements and on the other hand the demand for REEs+Y is increasing in the rest of the world. This has created an imbalance in the supply and demand of rare earth elements and has led to a rush for developing new rare earth projects."

"The name Barkc:rville district is applied loosely to the gold-bearing area around the historic town of Barkerville; the first mining camp in western Canada. The region is partly in the Cariboo mining division and partly in the Quesnel mining division. It contains two producing lode gold mines; the Cariboo Gold Quartz and the Island Mountain; and numerous other deposits. The regional structural pattern is outlined in this paper; the structural details of the producing mines are described in the papers that follow.The discovery of rich placer deposits in this district in 1860 was followed by the Cariboo gold rush. Placer mining in the area flourished until 1875 and then declined as the shallow diggings were exhausted, but important operations are still active. The total placer production amounts to about $50,000,000. An extraordinary number of quartz veins outcrop in the district, but many have only a small gold content. The miners soon recognized that the placer gold must have been derived from the erosion of these veins, and some directed their attention to the possibility of quartz mining. The erection of a 4stamp mill in 1876 was the first attempt at ore reduction in British Columbia, exclusive of arrastras. Efforts to mine the Cariboo lodes on a large scale were not successful, however, until 1933, when, due to the pertinacity of F. M. Wells and to the increased price of gold, the Cariboo Gold Quartz mine commenced production, followed by the Island Mountain mine in 1934. This success led to development work at many properties in the district, but the only ones that have reached production to date are the Columbia Tungstens, where scheelite has been mined intermittently since 1937, and the Cariboo Hudson, from which gold was produced in 1938 and 1939."

Stressmap is a program whereby the earth's stress field is charted in detail and utilized for design of mines and mine exploitation. This program is implemented by mapping the attitude (location, direction, dip, and extent) of induced rock ruptures during the process of hydrafracturing drill holes contiguous to mine interest. The program includes utilization of ancillary naturally occurring stress relief signals, They are precipitated because the earth is indeed dynamic and the strata of the crust are continually adjusting to load and/or strain differentials resulting in rock deformation and fracturing. These fracturing adjustments occur as small to tiny earthquakes comparable to Richter magnitudes of one, zero, minus one, and smaller events termed microearthquakes. Obviously, the earth's stress field changes due to continued differential loading and crustal movements; therefore it becomes conspicuously evident that resolving today's stress field as opposed to paleostresses is most important for efficient, economical, and safe mining operations.

In underground coal mines, three types of roof failure (2)*, tensile, local, and shear, occur in the development entries and in room-and-pillar extraction areas. Most of the tensile failures in the roof at the center of the mine opening as well as those local failures due to fracture or jointing can be controlled by roof bolts, trusses, and timbering. However, control of the shear failure at the sides of the roof (or the cutter-roof caving) has not been successful with ordinary roof control methods. The only effective method, when there is an indication of cutter-roof caving, is to use cribs, which are costly and make transportation, ventilation, and production difficult. Frequently, the operator allows the cutter roof to cave and then cleans it up rather than trying to stop it. This shear type of roof failure is often associated with large areas which may progressively involve several hundred feet of roof caving at one occurrence. At times, this shear failure occurs suddenly with little or no warning. This can result in buried equipment and great danger to the safety of personnel. This shear failure may be due to one or more of the following: high stress concentrations at the corner of the roof from (1) high horizontal to vertical load ratio, (2) orthotropic elastic properties of rock and coal, (3) greater stiffness of the immediate roof layer than of the secondary roof layer, (4) viscoelastic behavior of rock and coal, and (5) geometry and material properties of the geologic setting. The flotation behavior of kaolinite and diaspore using N, N-diethyl dodecyl amine (DEN12) and N, N-dimethyl dodecyl amine (DRN12) as collector have been investigated through flotation experiments. The mechanism of adsorption of two tertiary amine collectors on surface of kaolinite and diaspore were investigated by FTIR spectral, Zeta potentials measurements and calculation of molecular orbital energy. It has been found that DEN12 and DRN12 have stronger collecting power to kaolinite and weaker collecting abilityto diaspore than DDA. Kaolinite and diaspore in bauxite ores can be separated by using DEN12 and DRN12 as collectors at pulp pH below 8 and 6, respectively. The results of zeta potentials and calculation of molecular orbital energy indicated that the adsorption strength on kaolinite surface is in the order DEN12>DRN12>DDA and the adsorption strength on diaspore surface is in the order DDA>DEN12>DRN12. FTIR spectral analysis and Zeta potentials approve that the action between kaolinite and tertiary amine collector is strong electrostatic adsorption and that of diaspore is weak electrostatic adsorption in the range of pH 5~6.

To strike a fair balance is not always easy, nor is it possible always to satisfy both sides. "The mechanical properties of RSR anode alloys (lead-calcium-tin, 009+ and lead-strontium-tin) were investigated as a function of time with an objective of developing lead anodes for use in high temperature electrolytic processes such as in copper liberator cells and in cobalt and nickel electrowinning. At a temperature of 70 oC, the mechanical properties of rolled RSR lead-calcium-tin (PbCaSn) alloy currently used in copper electrowinning decreased gradually while the mechanical properties of rolled RSR lead-strontium-tin (PbSrSn) decreased relatively quickly and stabilized at low strength levels. Cast PbSrSn started off as the weakest alloy but its properties remained stable with time. Rolled RSR 009+ anode alloy showed improvement in ageing properties over the other alloys tested. However, its mechanical properties did not stabilize in the study timeframe of 284 days. Further investigations are planned to study the effect of alloying elements on mechanical properties of RSR 009+ anode alloy over several years as a function of time at 70 oC. The mechanical properties will be evaluated to determine the time at which they stabilize. Comparative plant trials with rolled RSR PbCaSn and RSR 009+ will also be performed in copper liberator cells and in cobalt and nickel electrowinning tankhouses to determine their mechanical and electrochemical performance at temperatures of 65-75 oC.INTRODUCTIONLead-based alloys are the primary anodes used in the electrowinning of copper, zinc, nickel, cobalt and manganese from sulfate-based aqueous systems. Lead anode technology has evolved over the years migrating from pure lead and lead-antimonial alloys to the present day PbCaSn alloys for copper and PbAg and PbCaAg alloys for zinc electrowinning (Prengaman, Ellis and Mirza, 2010). It has also migrated from cast to rolled microstructures in search of improved mechanical properties and higher corrosion resistance. Although great strides have been made in the development of new lead anode alloys and production processes for lead anodes to be used in copper electrowinning, the industry still has some unresolved issues. These relate to the necessity of having higher mechanical properties especially for the lead anodes in liberator cells in copper electrorefining and for cobalt and nickel electrowinning as these tankhouses operate at temperatures of 65-75 oC compared to 40-45 oC in case of copper electrowinning."

Calculations based on data obtained from measurements of smoke from coal-fired powerplants predict that infrared imagers will be useful tools for smoke vision. Infrared imagers operating in the 3-to 5-um spectral region have been evaluated for this purpose. A mine opening 110 meters long was filled with smoke from burning coal, and two men, wearing breathing apparatuses, moved through the smoke to serve as targets. The men were detected and identified at 80 meters.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines has been investigating methods and technology that, when applied to existing continuous coal mining machines, may improve production and safety. Toward those goals, a microcomputer network has been designed that provides automated control and monitoring of all mining machine systems using a single twisted pair cable (two conductor stranded wire twisted together to provide a level of noise rejection). The network also provides -connections for intelligent sensors and systems for navigation and diagnostics. The flexibility of the network is demonstrated in that features can be added and removed without redesigning the whole system. A general description of the network's integration to a Joy' 16CM, Joy 14CM, Jeffrey 102, and a custom built auger machine is provided. The microcomputer networks for the Joy 16CM and the Jeffrey 102 have been installed onboard the mining machines and have been extensively tested at the Bureau of Mines test facility. The Jeffrey 102 system has also been tested in an actual highwall coal seam. Both systems have performed satisfactorily. The microcomputer networks for the Joy 14CM and the Auger Miner have been tested and await installation on the respective machines.

O objetivo deste trabalho compreende a realização da síntese de SnO2 dopado com aditivo Sr2 contendo diferentes quantidades molares de SrO (X)SnO2+(1-X)SrO, em que o cátion Sr2+ foi introduzido através do nitrato de estrôncio variando de 5 à 50 % em mol para uma mistura tanto em meio aquoso quanto em meio alcoólico, seguida da calcinação do pó resultante que é feita à 700°C com uma taxa de 10°C/min. Análises de caracterização como difração de raios X, área específica, calorimetria exploratória, picnometria a gás e determinação do ponto isoelétrico das suspensões aquosas foram realizadas de modo a verificar qual o agente dispersante mais apropriado para as características ácido-básicos da suspensão em questão. A partir deste determinar o potencial zeta do composto estudado através da eletroforese. Compostos intermediários a base de estanato de estanho foram identificados, e a deposição por eletroforese foi realizada com sucesso, uma vez que foi possível obter uma suspensão estável a partir dos pós cerâmicos produzidos.

"A pilot test campaign was undertaken to evaluate dense medium cyclone separation efficiencies on samples of iron ore fines (-1mm +300µm). Evaluations were done using both gas and water atomised FeSi types across a range of operating conditions in the presence of slimes build-up. A Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) was used to measure size, density, shape and liberation data of DMS feed and products. The results of the test work were used to obtain parameters for modelling of the partition size/density response. The findings indicated that accurate density characterisation of the feed ore is essential in understanding product quality and recovery, particularly due to the effect of porosity and micro-inclusions. A significant off-set between cyclone underflow density and separation cut-point (D50) was found indicating that relatively low feed media densities (about 3.4g/cm3) are required to achieve high density cutpoints of over 4.0g/cm3. In agreement with CFD modelling, the separation quality is dominated by viscous effects, hence FeSi type and slimes content will need to be carefully controlled to ensure efficient separation.INTRODUCTION In the South African context, future resources of hematite are expected to be both of lower head grade and will contain a higher content of banded iron formation (BIF) (1). These ores may require finer crushing in order to liberate the high-grade fractions and will thus increase the amount of -1mm material to be processed. In order to efficiently upgrade these materials, it becomes necessary to re-examine both traditional and novel processes to treat material finer than 1mm in size. These include spiral and up-current classifiers, wet high intensity magnetic separation processes, Reflux classification and potentially includes dense medium separation (DMS). This study presents a technical evaluation of fines DMS using a mineralogically-based particle tracking analysis method (PTA) to calculate efficiencies of separation."

El presente estudio surge del desafío de Compañía minera Antapaccay por procesar 40M t de mineral el año 2021, el 62% del material tendría como origen a minerales del Tajo Norte con valores de Axb de 25-35. En los años 2018 y 2019 los minerales del Tajo Norte tuvieron impacto en el tonelaje procesado debido a su bajo Axb que afectó los resultados de fragmentación en la voladura con 35.8% finos < 1 pulg. Se identificó que, para lograr el objetivo deseado, era necesario invertir en voladura, a fin de obtener mejoras en la fragmentación que conllevaría a incrementar el tratamiento de mineral en la planta y los rendimientos de los equipos de carguío.

PT Freeport Indonesia’s Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) is one of three operating cave mines at the Grasberg mine complex. The DMLZ is situated in the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS). It is set 500 m below the operating DOZ mine and located approximately 1,500 m below the surface, making it one of the world’s deepest panel caving operations. Initial undercutting of the DMLZ commenced in the second half of 2015 and has expanded to more than 120,000 m2. High pre-mining stresses and the changes associated with caving, combined with a strong and brittle rock mass, led to significant seismicity and rock bursting. Stress and seismic management are the main challenges for the operation and have evolved significantly from initial undercutting to the present. Considerable amounts of empirical data associated with ground response have been collected, evaluated and combined with historical lessons learned from the Intermediate Ore Zone (IOZ) and Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mines, which are located within the EESS. This has provided an improved understanding of how the various geological, geotechnical and mine design criteria relate to one another. Additionally, the information has allowed for the development and implementation of improved strategies for stress and seismic management in the DMLZ. This paper describes how these learnings have driven changes in mine geometry, layout, and support systems. Through comprehensive monitoring and detailed inspections, positive changes have been seen in the ground response, leading to an increase in footprint reliability and accelerated cave growth. The paper summarizes the key learnings at the DMLZ regarding stress and seismic management as well as the positive improvements towards sustained and safe caving operations in the DMLZ.

The implementation of presplit perimeter control in underground mining as a method to decrease dilution yields positive benefits throughout the current and future mining cycles. A case study to understand the benefits of reducing overbreak and underbreak in a cut and fill mining cycle was performed to quantify the reduction in backbreak. The study was performed in a control section of the mine where a presplit perimeter control design was utilized for a length of heading. This control heading was then compared to the existing standard blasting design within the same mining zone. The comparison included multiple aspects of the mining advance including overbreak, dilution of waste, dilution of Cemented Rock Fill, bolt counts, and cycle times. Once mining in the control section was completed and mining commenced in adjacent headings, blast damage due to blast design could be quantified.
