For a long period of time, the Chinese Government has been attaching great importance to and supporting the rapid development of the coal industry. Particularly since more than 30 years ago, when China introduced the Reform and Opening-up policy, the reform and development of the Chinese coal industry has witnessed world-recognized achievements. National coal production increased from 618 million tonnes in 1978 to 3.52 billion tonnes in 2011. While China?s coal production accounts for 49.5% of the world?s total, its annual production growth contributes to over 80% of global production growth. China is a country utilizing coal as its main source of energy. As the Chinese Government gives support to the rapid development of new and renewable energy sources, as well as to increased coal utilization efficiency, the ratio of coal in the primary energy consumption mix will gradually decline. However, for a long period of time to come, the total volume of coal demand will keep rising modestly. The Chinese Government has been highly committed to and actively promoting the overall, coordinated and sustainable development model, which puts people first. It has put forward a strategic task to build an ecological civilization, and highlighted its resolve to uphold the basic national policy of resource conservation and environmental protection, with a view to the pursuit of sustainable development. China will incorporate its response to climate change into the national economic and social development program, and take effective measures to lower CO2 emissions 40?45% per unit of GDP in 2020 compared to 2005. At the same time, China will increase the ratio of non-fossil fuels to 15% in the primary energy consumption mix. All of the above factors have raised requirements for the Chinese coal industry, with implications for clear directions, plans and goals for the development of the coal industry.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted experiments for predicting materials' ease of combustion (smoldering onset, smoldering, flaming, and decomposition rates) by means of submicrometer smoke particle characteristics for the development of a simple test method. The experiments were carried out in an approximately 20-L furnace, with a 10-L/min airflow through the furnace for a 14-min duration, at set furnace temperatures of 150°, 250°, and 1,000° C. The variables studied as a function of time were the onset time of smoke particles, time and duration of maximum smoke particle generation, average concentration of smoke particles, and particles' average diameter, mass weight loss, and furnace temperatures. Results show that the onset time of smoke particles is predictive of materials' ease of smoldering, and the time of maximum smoke particle generation and its duration, coupled with mass weight loss, are predictive of materials' ease of smoldering and flaming (depending on the experimental temperatures), and decomposition rates.

INTRODUCTION The gold production is from the state-owned gold mines, the local gold mines and the by-product of metal mines. Since 1975, the small gold mines have developed in rapid strides. Currently, there are about 3000 small gold mines in China. Most of them are operated by the local, and the production is about 50% of China's gold output. In the small gold mines, the normalized mining equipments are employed at most of mines, but some mines still use such backward tunnelling and mining tools as pick, shovel and hand hammer etc.. The mining techniques have developed from the primitive to the advanced, especially the methods of open stope, shrinkage and filling have been widely used. Such new mining techniques as bolting, vibrating draw, non-electric ignition and diamond drilling etc. are also introduced in the wall gold mines. In recent years, the development of small gold mines is very fast under the guidance of new mining policy which is ' rapid and great development of large-sized mines, helping small mines to develop, and quick mining for the existing mines; and encouraging the collective and the individual to operate a mine.' GEOLOGICAL FEATURES The gold veins are dominant, which are divided into two types, ie. the mesothermal deposit with altered rock in a crushed zone and the hypothermal deposit with quartz veins. The orebody distribution is not centralized, and the size of deposit and single minable orebody is small respectively. Most of deposit dip at 30° to 50°, characterized by expansion and shrinkage, ramification and compound, thinning out and reappearance, separation and composite at the parallel veins etc.. The ore grade is variable, and the factor of grade change is above 100%. The waste zones with lean or submarginal ore usually exist in deposits. As for the gold deposits with altered rock, the ore boundary is indistinct. Most of gold deposits, particularly the gold deposits with altered rock, are intruded by the late structural rock, thus the faults and joints are developed, and the rock and ore are crushed, especially the host rock of roof wall is very crushed. It ie obvious that the conditions of both formation of deposit and mining are considerably complicated. HISTORY With a long mining history and rich experiences, the local gold sectors are small, but they play an important role in China's gold mining industry. Dated from Xia and Shang Dynasty, the gold goods was made. In the Tang Dynasty, the development of gold mining industry was very fast. A Chinese poem , written by Liu Yuxi -- one of famous poets in the Tang Dynasty, says: As sun is shining over Dengzhou land, The fog on river slowly goes away, The panning girls together meet at bay, The beauty's jewels and stamps of king are gold from river sand. This poem shows the local gold mining was flourishing at that time. In 1888, the local gold mining sectors were all the rage at the moment, and the annual output of gold was as high as 21.5 tons. Since the founding of New China, the development of local gold mining was subjected to several back- sets, but certain advances are made on the whole, especially since 1970. Round about 1970,the simple, backward and indigenous mining was dominant in the small gold mines; for instance, the hand-hammer drilling, the hand-operated winch hoisting and the hand haulage etc.were main methods of gold mining . Up until the late 1970s,great changes took place in stoping, haulage and so on. Currently, some advanced technology and large-sized equipments are adopted in the local gold mines. Generally, the local small gold mining sectors play an important role in development of China's gold mining industry, and are important and attractive sectors. PRESENT DEVELOPMENT

Approximately 2.4 million ounces of gold and 11.3 million ounces of silver have been produced from the Umuna Lode by Misima Mines Pty Limited between June 1989 and the end of Decemeber 1996. Reserves remaining at the end of December were 32.1 million tonnes at 1.0 gram per tonne gold and 9.7 grams per tonne silver. To attain precious metal production of this volume, an estimated K60,000,000 (1996 Kina) was spent on exploration alone. from the 1940s to the present day. Exploration expenditure for the 1996 calendar year was approximately K4,400,000. With such a large investment in exploration, large quantities of data were generated and stored in various forms. To make best use of this data, it was necessary to organise and systematically store this data in a form compatible with a modern Geographical Information System (GIS). The Umuna Lode on Misima Island is a low sulphidation gold- silver deposit dated at 3.5 ¦ 0.2 Ma. The deposit is controlled by the 50 to 100 metre wide Umuna Fault- a moderate dipping, brecciated clay- chlorite- carbonate altered, normal fault zone. There is approximately 230 metres of mostly dip slip offset on this fault, which is measurable by the offset of the Cretaceous schist, marble and greenstone host sequence. Late Miocene microdiorite spatially related to the Umuna Lode does not appear to be genetically related to the gold- silver mineralisation. GIS was introduced to Misima at the end of 1995 and until recently has been mostly used for data storage and retrieval, the over- laying of various data sets to assist in targeting prospective areas, and as a drafting tool. The use of data-driven, predictive data analysis is the most recent effort in maximising the use of the extensive Misima database. By characterising the key controls and properties of the Umuna- type mineralisation, a Weights of Evidence, data-driven analysis produced a prospectivity map of Misima Island. The purpose of this map was to identify prospective areas yet to be explored and to assess the effectiveness of exploration to date.

The heat balance and chemical equilibria involved in the production of blister copper from a chalcopyrite concentrate in a single operation are examined. It appears that two stages—one oxidising and one reducing—will be required. The analysis indicates that on thermal grounds the process is possible with a dry, high-grade chalcopyrite concentrate, if oxygen enrichment to about 30 per cent is used, but that copper losses in the slag will be serious and will require a secondary recovery operation. More extensive data on the activities of copper oxide in slags are required to elucidate this point more effectively

Within the Pofadder district of Namaqualand, South Africa, economically exploited deposits of bedded barite and zinc-lead-silver-copper sulfides occur in close proximity within highly metamorphosed mid-Proterozoic pre-tectonic para¬gneisses of the Namaqualand Metamorphic Complex (NMC) (figure i). The paragneisses belong to the Bushmanland Group (SACS, 1980) that comprises a relatively straight-forward regional sequence of basal leucogneisses, intermediate mica-sillimanite schists and glassy quartzites, and a mixed upper zone of banded iron formations (BIF), minor marbles, quartz muscovite schists and localised uppermost quartz-pebble conglomerates and amygdaloidal mafic gneisses (Joubert, 1974) (figure ii). The base metal and barite mineralisation occurs in close association with BIFs, generally above the glassy quartzites, although in some cases possibly below them. In the regional context, the Bushmanland Group paragneisses are, to the north, intercalated with and ultimately replaced by meta-volcanic sequences of talc-alkaline affinity (Reid, 1977) belonging to the Orange River Group (SACS, 1980). The metavolcanics are generally of acidic to intermediate composition and show evidence of subaerial formation from 'high altitude shield volcanism' with many acidic ashflow and welded tuff bands, mesocratic and lesser melanocratic lavas and some fanglomerates (Ritter, 1980). To the south and east, the schist/quartzite associations are initially intercalated with and eventually replaced by cordierite gneiss/metacarbonate/biotite gneiss associations of shallow marine affinity (Moore, 1980a). The Bushmanland Group paragneisses appear to represent sedimentary material in the extreme distal portions of a talc-alkaline volcanic environment adjacent to a shallow platform sea.

It is believed that sulfur and volatile matter con-tents in coals are the main intrinsic properties to cause the self-heating of coal. Their oxidation at lower temperatures than that of fixed carbon to initiate coal's self-heating should be quantified. This study is aimed to improve the previous mathematical model developed by the authors for studying the coal's propensity for spontaneous combustion. It enhances the model's ability to consider the effects of sulfur, volatile matter and moisture contents in the coal three important factors affecting the coal's self-heating process. Sulfur exists in coal primarily in the form of pyrite which will be oxidized rapidly under suitable conditions. Volatile matters, higher in low rank coals, are more easily to be oxidized. Heat of water condensation provides initial energy for low temperature oxidation. Heat release rates for pyrite oxidation and moisture condensation are built in the model. Finally, the simulation results in terms of time versus temperature on pyrite oxidation and moisture condensation are validated with the adiabatic testing data respectively.

INSTRUMENTATION in the process industries can no longer be regarded as a convenience, but rather an absolute necessity. Although many chemical processes must already be conducted with instruments, every properly designed application of automatic process control will improve operation: 1) the product will be more uniform and of higher quality; 2) the manual labor saved will reduce cost; 3) uniformity of flow and uniform control of process will increase production; and 4) surges will be eliminated, making it possible to operate equipment near ultimate capacity at all times. Industrial instruments fall into two general classifications—those that measure and those that measure and control. The cement industry has been using instruments for a number of years, particularly in the burning process, primarily for indicatlng and recording. Automatic process control makes additional use of these instruments, and others, to control variables. Assisted by the instrument manufacturers, engineers at Ideal Cement Co. achieved considerable progress in determining how well the usual recording instruments could be made to control various phases of cement-making. The results of these experiments were used to make the new plant at Houston as wholly automatic as possible. The original Houston plant, built in 1937 by Gulf Portland Cement Co., consisted of only one 8 x 220-ft kiln and the necessary grinding mills and accessory equipment and had a capacity of 900 bbl per day (300,000 bbl annually). Ideal Cement Co. purchased this plant in 1940 and almost immediately started plans to increase its production. In 1941 a 9 x 220-ft kiln was installed and grinding and storage capacity were increased. The growing demand for cement in the Houston area necessitated a third kiln (9 ft 6 in. x 250 ft) in 1947. This brought the plant up to its present capacity of about 1.3 million bbl per year. Calcium silicates in cement are produced in a burning operation at high temperatures from raw mix of argillaceous and calcareous materials that have been crushed, mixed, and ground to a fine powder. The composition of this mixture must be kept consistent within narrow limits. Raw mixing and grinding may be done either wet or dry, but in both instances the materials must be correctly proportioned, finely ground, and thoroughly intermixed before entering the kiln. IN 1914, the officials of the Brundred Oil Corpn., faced with the problem of introducing new methods to increase production in the old and nearly depleted pools of Venango County, became interested in the Smith-Dunn (Marietta) process which was at that time being tried out in southeastern Ohio and which was already yielding very encouraging results. A license to use the process in Pennsylvania was secured from the owners of the patents. These patents were later declared invalid. The method was first used in Pennsylvania on a property consisting of about 434 acres, of which 300 are productive, at Hamilton Corners, 15 miles northeast of Oil City, in Cherry Tree and Oakland Townships, Venango County. The producing horizon is the First Sand of the Venango Group. A small oil pool was opened up in this vicinity in 1904. By July, 1916, when the compressed air was first introduced to restore pressure, the production had dropped to a point where it was no longer possible to continue profitable operation. From that time until March, 1927, over 100,000 bbl. of oil have been recovered from the tract. The property is being operated at present by the Brundred Oil Corpn. and Lux. The 1926 production, amounting to 10,650 bbl., was only 400 bbl. short of the maximum reached during any year of the 10-year period that the process has been in operation. Inasmuch as the Hamilton Corners pool is the first one in Pennsylvania in which the Marietta process was tried out, and the one in which it has been longest in continuous operation, considerable interest attaches to the results obtained. Through the courtesy of H. D. Brown and W. J: Brundred, officials of the Brundred Oil Corpn., all their data on this operation were made available to the writer in connection with an investigation of rejuvenation methods in the State for the Pennsylvania Geological Survey.

Gold deposits in Eastern China have characteristic of belted distribution. The concentrating belts of gold mineralization are about parallel to the island are belt in Western Pacific Ocean. Gold deposits are mainly concentrated in the aged metamorphic rock series on the upwarping zones and upwarping fault zones, and obviously controlled by the deep fractures and their deriva-tive secondary faults. Gold mineralization had genetic relation to the Mesozoic (especially Yanshan period) magmatic activity. The distribution and genesis of gold deposits can be explained by the assumption of wavy structure. The formation of wavy structure is related to the process of Pacific plate and India plate.

At the last meeting of the Institute, several contributions were made to the subject of miners' aid funds. Such matters will always form important factors in the administration of large industrial enterprises. From the frequently remote and isolated position of mining properties, it is a subject that often forces itself upon the attention of the mining engineer. Local conditions are usually so variable that no single method can be found equally well adapted to all localities. At the same time, a study of different types is often suggestive and valuable, and it is with this in view that these notes are presented. The Miners' Fund of New Almaden is a remarkably successful example of what may be done for miners by a wise and at the same time firm management, by simply directing their own efforts and without incurring any great expense to the stockholders,—a practical consideration not without importance in most cases. ?Rare earths ?will not be bargaining instruments?? was stated in a headline in China Daily of 29 October 2010. The Chinese government is trying to fend off the persistent accusations from Japan, the USA, and Europe that it is manipulating the supply of these so called ?critical? metals to gain political and economic advantages. The critics maintain that China has taken the rest of the world hostage by controlling 97% of the resources of rare earths. These elements are crucial in a number of high-tech applications. They are not impossible to substitute, but difficult to do so effectively. The name ?rare earth? is a misnomer, as even the least abundant is 200 times more common in the Earth?s crust than gold. They are, however, difficult to find in economic concentrations. The Chinese near-monopoly over the rare earths, together with China?s scramble for other resources in Australia, Africa, and elsewhere around the world, is seen as an example of a Chinese strategy to take control of vital metal resources. The Chinese are also accused of using unfair and sometimes illegal business practices in this fight for resources. Practices which, critics claim, put the Chinese interests above the interests of the host countries, in particular in Africa.

This paper will discuss the operation and maintenance of Molycorp's Quests Mine ore conveyor system. The 1.2 m wide, steel cable-reinforced conveyor belts are capable of transporting 1089 kt/h of ore over a belt line distance of 3124 m with a vertical rise of 518 m. A portion of the conveyor runs in a 2057 m long underground decline on a 10° slope. Six 448 kW motors power the main 1.2 m wide belts.

The People's Republic of China has 582 Gt (641 billion tons) of proven coal reserves. At present, 576.5 Mt (635.5 million tons) of coal are mined a year which makes China the third largest producer of coal in the world. Underground mining accounts for 95% of the total production. This paper will discuss the coal districts, coal types, jurisdiction of coal mining, and methods of underground mining. The article also will outline China's objectives in future planning and development of its coal reserves.

The key problems of current flowsheets and equipments are analyzed. A new steel slag's crushing flowsheet whose key equipments are the improved inertia cone crusher and inertia vibrating jaw crusher is proposed. An advanced two stage open-circuit crushing method is adopted in the flowsheet, with 90% of particle size crushing under 6mm. Using inertia vibrating technology and selective crushing principle the crushers can realize steel slag separating fully into steel and slag and with flexible transmission mechanism the crusher can be protected when iron lump is passing. The flowsheets can enhance the recovery of metal greatly, and expand the application range of tail slag and added value.

One of the chief sources of the world's supply of asbestos lies in a belt of ultrabasic rocks which runs northeastward through an area called the Eastern Townships, south of the St. Lawrence River in the Province of Québec. The productive portion of this belt extends from the town of Asbestos in the south, for a distance of some 9,5 km to beyond the village of East-Broughton. The first discovery of asbestos in this region was made in 1874. Only crude fibre was produced until 1888 when the first mill was erected near the town of Black Lake. Since the inception of the industry, almost 100 years ago, no less than 100 different compa¬nies have been formed and 46 different mines have been operated. There are presently 5 active companies in the area providing direct employment for 4100 workers, down from 6000 during the seventies.

Phosphate rock is a naturally occurring mineral which, in upgraded form, is important to both agriculture and industry. Phosphate rock normally must be upgraded before it can be assimilated and used. Most of this upgrading is now carried out by chemical means, largely through the reaction of a strong inorganic acid (primarily sulfuric acid) with the phosphate rock to remove major impurities and to produce soluble phosphate. A less important but yet still commercially significant conversion method involves the thermal reduction of phosphate rock at high temperature in an electric furnace to produce elemental phosphorus. The elemental phosphorus is then converted to usable end products. This conversion route is a more costly method than the chemical route, but it has the advantage of being able to produce chemically pure phosphorus derivatives. On the other hand, the use of phosphate rock for agricultural application-primarily for use as a plant nutrient ingredient for fertilizer -does not require the same level of purity. As a consequence, the chemical method of phosphate rock upgrading is the predominant technique for producing phosphatic fertilizers.

The South African Iron and Steel Company Ltd operates a large Iron Ore Mine in the Cape Province of the Republic of South Africa. The Mine is situated on the farm, Sishen, approximately 600 km west of Johannesburg. The annual capacity of the Mine is 100 million ton of ore and waste and the present production level is 60 million ton. The Mine operates continuously for 6 days a week. The primary equipment used to maintain the above production are 55, 154 t trucks (Wabco and Unit Rig) and 14 P & H shovels. During 1979 an urgent feasibility study into the application of a trolley assist system was launched at the Mine. This was due to the unrealistic escalation in the cost of diesel fuel and the appeal from the South African Government to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Tests and economic evaluations proved the system technical feasible. The estimated discounted cash flow return exceeded 50% and the diesel fuel consumption would be reduced by 120 million litres in the next 10 years. Management subsequently approved the implementation of the system at Sishen. The construction of 7,7 km of line and the conversion of 66, 154 t trucks were completed in March 1982.

This handout lists practically all the reports prepared for the FHWA involving deep foundations and some related work involving the same structural elements (piles, shafts, ground anchors).
