The implementation of technological advancements in flotation is key to optimize performance in mining operations. Consequently, flotation cell’s performance is highly dependent on the effectiveness of the mixing mechanism. A more efficient flotation mixing mechanism is likely to improve metallurgical performance and optimize energy consumption, which is the motivation for Metso’s journey to develop the latest iteration of FloatForce®. Looking to test the new design at plant scale, Metso approached the Kennecott Copperton concentrator, which is continuously looking for different venues to improve metallurgical performance. In this context, a test campaign was conducted to implement this new flotation mixing mechanism in their rougher circuit during 2024. The industrial trial consisted of several sampling campaigns assessing different operational parameters for comparison purposes around a 300m3 flotation cell. The effect of the new flotation mixing mechanism on the cell’s power draw was also studied. The results of this trial at Kennecott are presented in this paper. Overall new flotation mixing mechanism, FloatForce+ was seen to perform as well as the original FloatForce.

Frontino, a municipality in western Antioquia, Colombia, has more than 200 years of mining tradition. Currently, mining activities are carried out for lode gold using subway tunnels, where the grinding of the material is done in "cocos", whose energy depends on internal combustion engines and ACPM, environmentally polluting and inefficient methods. In accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals as an initiative developed by the UN, different mining methodologies that are aligned with these are constantly being analyzed. This study proposes to eliminate the use of hydrocarbons in artisanal mining, mainly promoting Sustainable Development Goals 7, 9, 11, 12, and 13. This will be achieved through an energy transition to renewable energy sources that take advantage of the topography and water resources of the area, providing advantages to the communities that live there, such as lighting, electricity for cooking, ventilation for mines, etc

This paper presents the results of pile lateral capacities obtained from both conventional design and fullscale pile lateral load tests. Conventional design using P-Y curve analysis is very commonly being used by designers; designers use well accepted software programs like Lpile and Allpile for analysis. However, these programs do not cover the soil models to simulate engineering behavior of marine carbonate sands; which generally have different engineering behavior than silica/quarts sands. In this study, the existing soil models for common sands have been used to assess pile lateral capacities and these results are compared with the results from full-scale instrumented pile lateral load tests performed in compacted marine carbonate sand fills of artificial island constructed for oil and gas facilities in Abu Dhabi. The objective of this study was to verify the applicability of the existing sand soil models for carbonate sands and also to verify the associated conservatism in the pile lateral capacities. This study shows that the actual pile lateral response is much stiffer than what was anticipated through the LPile analysis. Therefore, further research focus may be required to capture the engineering behavior of the marine carbonate sands to develop specific P-Y curves.

Discussion of the paper of Charles R. Keyes, Bi-Monthly Bulletin, No. 19, January, 1908, pp. 1 to 31. BERNARD MACDONALD, Guanajuato, Mexico (communication to the Secretary*) :-Mr. Keyes's paper is very interesting to me because of my personal experience with the development of the ore-deposits of Lake Valley. Seeing that many of the important facts connected with the early history of the development of these mines are either now unknown, or have become more or less distorted, and thinking that it would be interesting as well as valuable to have these recorded as a historical supplement to Mr. Keyes's elaborate paper, I present the following narrative: In February, 1881, soon after the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fé railroad made connection with the Southern Pacific at Denting, N. M., the Lake Valley properties were brought to the attention of New York and Philadelphia capitalists by John A. Miller, of Silver City, N. M. At that time silver was $1.10 all ounce and silver-mining was very attractive. Vast fortunes were being made in Leadville and other Colorado camps, and Tombstone was pouring out its millions. Lake Valley, like all' other mining-camps in their early history, had its drawbacks, but the railroad, then passing within 14 miles of it, mitigated many of these. The camp lay in the foot-hills of the Black range, in which the Apaches had their stronghold, and raided, when it suited their convenience, the surrounding country, killing the prospectors and pioneer settlers and stealing their cattle. This band of Indians was joined by the outlaws and desperadoes from the frontiers of Texas, Arizona, and Mexico, who collectively defied the United States soldiers, restrained, as the latter were, by the mollycoddles from the East. During the year 1945, the total number of wells drilled in Ohio, including the. non¬productive wells, was 1034. For the 10-year period ending with 1945, the average completions per year were 1125, the least number being 910 in 1938, and the maximum 1561 in 1941. The proportion of dry holes in 1945 was 37 per cent?about the same as for the year 1944 but exceeding the 10-year average, which was 34 per cent. The number of oil wells completed exceeded the number drilled in 1944 by about 30 per cent, the average initial per well being the same in both years. Gas-well completions were approximately 10 per Cent less than in 1944, with the average initial per well about 5 per cent greater. The difference in number of oil and gas wells in the two years was in Berea and Clinton completions, as the number of oil wells increased about 30 per cent, owing to greater activity in the two sands named, while the number of gas wells decreased because of fewer completions therein.

Nos últimos anos diversos trabalhos evidenciam a possibilidade de utilização de small coque como constituinte da carga metálica dos altos-fornos, visando a redução na temperatura da zona de reserva térmica. Esse trabalho avalia a viabilidade técnica, em escala laboratorial, da produção de um determinado small coque altamente reativo, através da adição de 2 catalisadores: pellet feed e cal virgem totalizando 3% em massa, em sua superfície. Foram realizadas caracterizações químicas dos catalisadores por meio de Fluorescência de Raios-X (FRX) e avaliados os impactos destas adições sobre CRI (Coke Reactivity Index) e CSR (Coke Strength after Reaction) das amostras produzidas. Os resultados mostraram aumentos acima de 2% na reatividade do small coque, tanto para a adição de cal virgem quanto para pellet feed, porém mais significativo para a adição de cal virgem, comprovando que a técnica de Pós-adição de catalisadores da reação de Boudouard no small coque, pode ser uma alternativa para redução de custo e emissões de CO2 no Alto-Forno.

A Coqueria no contexto siderúrgico é a área responsável pela produção de coque metalúrgico para os Altos-Fornos. O coque geralmente é obtido em fornos verticais, que tem a finalidade de aquecer a mistura dos carvões minerais até a temperatura de pirolise, através da queima controlada de um combustível. O objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar as alterações realizadas no Controle de Combustão das Baterias de Coque da ArcelorMittal Tubarão para garantir a estabilidade operacional e o maior controle do tempo líquido de coqueificação. O aprimoramento do modelo matemático ajustado as condições atuais do processo, trouxe benefícios tais como a obtenção de uma melhor distribuição de calor ao longo das paredes de aquecimento e consequentemente a redução das resistências aos desenfornamentos, consumo de calor e emissões de poluentes, preservando a estabilidade operacional das baterias de coque e contribuindo para o prolongamento da vida útil.

The Bureau of Mines made a laboratory study of the amenability of anorthosite rock ( from the San Gabriel Mountains , Los Angeles County , Calif . ) to treatment by the lime soda sinter process for the extraction of alumina . The study was done under a cooperative agreement with the California Division of Mines and Geology . This report presents the results of the investigation , and it includes a review of the geology of the deposit ( 7 ) by Dr. Gordon B. Oakeshott . Interest in the recovery of alumina from submarginal aluminum silicate ores is stimulated by the fact that the domestic aluminum industry depends on imports of bauxite for its alumina requirements . Of the 8.0 million long dry tons of high - grade bauxite consumed in 1961 for producing metallurgicalgrade alumina , only 0.9 million long tons , or 11 percent , was mined in this country . During past years many organizations have carried out research programs to determine if alumina could be extracted economically from such domestic ores as clays ( 3 , 4 ) , anorthosite ( 8 ) , and other silicate sources . Successful alumina extraction is the ultimate objective of the Bureau of Mines program.

Direct relationships between rock texture and BWi (grindability index) have been established based on geological and metallurgical information supported by optical microscopy observations, gathered from 731 samples.Each recognised rock texture is observed to be related to a certain BWi range and, this texture is also characteristic of distinct lithological subunits (recognisable at mapping scale). Therefore, this relationship may provide an important tool for early milling in situ estimation.Since each textural type is a response to rock formation conditions, the causality of the relationship between BWi and texture is based on such conditions and, particularly, on the interfacial free energy among its components.According to the abovementioned textural features, the greater the free interfacial energy between mineral components, the greater the necessary energy required to break its grain boundaries and, consequently, the greater the necessary energy required for milling.If the textural evidence indicates that the rock was able to adjust the shape and/or size of its components – in a natural tendency of all systems to minimise energy– then the necessary energy required to break its grain boundaries will be lower.

Optimization of a three-dimensional (3D) underground stope layout is complex given the number of variables and constraints to consider, such as the stope size. Determination of the appropriate stope size in stope layout optimization problems is a complex process that must consider several factors including placement of infrastructure and development, production scheduling, and equipment selection. An inappropriate stope layout can result in unrealistic expectations for a production schedule, consequently negatively affecting the derived economic value. Therefore, this paper used a dual interchange algorithm (DIA) to evaluate the effect of stope size on the stope layout economic value (SLEV) for a synthetic Platreef mineral deposit planned for extraction using sublevel open-stoping. The results showed that generally as the stope size increases, the SLEV decreases. This aligns with practical mining because larger stope sizes have a higher chance of incurring more dilution which reduces economic value, while smaller stope sizes enable more flexible extraction where unprofitable blocks can be left unmined as waste, thus increasing the derived SLEV.

Waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) are excellent metal resources. Mineralogical characteristics of different components in WPCBs were analysed in this study. Organic-enriched particles, fibreglass-enriched particles, associated particles and metal-enriched particles were obtained by density gradient method. Subsequently, the elemental composition, morphology, dissociation characteristics, functional group composition and phase composition of different components were analysed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRF), scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM+EDS), infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Elemental analysis results show that Cu is mainly contained in metal-enriched particles. SEM+EDS analysis results demonstrate that ideal dissociation can be achieved when the WPCBs are broken to -1 mm. Organic matter particles are enriched with carbon and oxygen elements, while fibreglass particles and associated particles mainly contain Al and Si elements, verified by XRD analysis. FT-IR results show that hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups exist widely in all components, caused by widespread organic matter. This study reveals the important properties of different components in WPCBs, which is of great significance for the subsequent separation process. Hydrocyclones are widely used in wet mineral classification applications and can be notoriously prone to wear. The methods currently used for quantifying hydrocyclone wear profiles are mostly twodimensional. In this paper it was attempted to quantify and monitor wear in three-dimensions, using a micro-CT scanner (Nikon XTH 225 ST). Hydrocyclone wear and, more specifically, spigot wear was investigated on a Multotec HC250 (Dc 250 mm, barrel diameter) hydrocyclone. The hydrocyclone is lined by a vulcanised natural rubber compound within a metal shell, with a thermosetting polyurethane spigot and vortex finder. Tests were conducted on the hydrocyclone in a pilot-scale recirculating test setup. The wear rate of the spigot was quantified by measuring the volume change within the spigot over 122 days in operation, using the micro-CT scanner. After 122 days in operation (recirculating feed materials) the wear in the hydrocyclone led to only a 13.67% loss of spigot volume. The relatively low wear rate could be related to the fact that material recirculation led to particle smoothing and a reduction in size, thereby decreasing the wear rate. This also shows the enormous influence that particle shape and size have on wear. The research was conducted with the support of Multotec, NECSA and the University of Pretoria. By the end of 2022, the south-eastern Copper Belt region of the Democratic Republic of Congo was host to more than 40 small, medium, and relatively large sized copper solvent extraction sites. To date, solvent extraction reagents supplied in this region have never exceeded 50% of ketoxime content. We generated laboratory extraction and strip isotherms and used these with the BASF IsocalcTM modelling software to assess the benefit of using higher ketoxime blends on the main metallurgical performance indicators such as copper recovery and net transfer. Pure ketoxime extractants combine a relatively low strip point and a decent loading capacity, which are most effective as the pH of the pregnant leach solution gets closer to 2.

São mostrados os resultados alcançados no primeiro mês de operação.

Também chamado de PRFV, esse tipo de material é usado em diversos segmentos da indústria e a escolha por esse material é devido ao aprimoramento de suas características ou propriedades se comparados com os metais, cerâmicos ou polímeros isoladamente. O tempo médio de um incêndio foi estimado fazendo-se um levantamento de incêndios de média a grandes proporções e esse tempo usado para calcular a temperatura média do incêndio para materiais hidrocarbonetos. O tubo tem sua temperatura limitada em 200ºC, temperatura de degradação do polímero. As amostras foram envelhecidas no forno a uma temperatura próxima da deterioração e depois resfriadas à água e ao ar. Foi comprovado através da análise da transferência de calor que quanto mais perto o material estiver da fonte de calor, maior vai ser a energia incidente sobre o material. O estudo foi feito considerando uma fonte pontual de calor. Além disso, é feita uma análise do tempo que uma estrutura feita do mesmo material levaria para atingir a temperatura de degradação, descartando seu uso posterior.

Carbothermal selective reduction of simulative titanium slag and various titanium raw materials were presented and SiO2 was found to be partially reduced, forming a series of Fe-Si alloys during the process. Thermodynamic analysis of the selective reduction between TiO2 and SiO2 was performed using HSC 6.0 software, then a series of equilibrium experiments were designed and presented. The activity of Si reduced from SiO2 was affected by the presence of Fe reduced from FeOx and the generation of Fe-Si alloys, promoting the reduction of SiO2 in the whole process. The results of experiment are in great accordance with the calculated data obtained from thermodynamic analysis.

The effects of microwave roasting on separation of rhenium (Re) and molybdenum (Mo) from a molybdenite concentrate have been investigated based on evaluation of the heating characteristics of the concentrate in the microwave field. The results show that a variety of operating variables, namely microwave power, sample weight, sample geometry, roasting temperature, roasting time and atmosphere significantly impact on the volatilization rates of Re and Mo. The optimum conditions for Re-Mo separation are microwave power 1300 W, sample weight 20 g, sample geometry pellets, temperature 600 oC, time 1.5 h, and atmosphere 20%O2. Under these experimental conditions, the volatilization rate of Re reaches 88.12%, while that of Mo is just 5.15%. Microwave-assisted roasting provides an alternative route to separating Re and Mo from molybdenite concentrate.
