Graphite is a raw .material of considerable importance in both waxy and peace. Two types of graphite, classified according to particle size as flake and fines, are used, but the former is in much greater demand. The principal wartime use of graphite is in the manufacture of crucibles for melting brass and special alloys of copper and steel. Other uses in both peace and war are as lubricants, for foundry facings, and in paints, electrodes, batteries, motor and generator brushes, and a variety of other commodities. . This paper describes the operations of the Southwestern Graphite Co. of Los Angeles, Calif., which produces both flake and fine graphite from a property in Burnet County, Tex.

This paper will describe the large caisson pier foundations for four of the bridges crossing the Mississippi River in the New Orleans area; and will discuss some of the unusual problems encountered during their sinking. Certain settlement phenomena experienced during their service life will also be related: The four bridges in order of their construction: The Huey P. Long Bridge, River Mile 106.1, completed in 1935 The Greater New Orleans Bridge No.1, River Mile 96.0, completed in 1958 The Hale Boggs Bridge, River Mile 121.6, completed in 1983 The Greater New Orleans Bridge No.2, River Mile 96.1, completed in 1988 Each of these bridges employed large open-dredged concrete caissons as foundations for one or more of the river piers, with the smallest being the 65ft by 102ft caissons for Piers I and II of the Huey P. Long Bridge and the largest being the 99ft by 214ft caisson for Pier II of the Greater New Orleans Bridge No.2. The Huey P. Long caissons are founded in a dense fine sand at -170 while all of the other bridge caissons are founded in hard preconsolidated clay at elevations varying from -150 to -185. The Huey P. Long Bridge is currently being widened without increasing the caisson foundations under any of the river piers; and the design reasoning that led to this decision is presented.

Since the late 60's, planners at American Natural have known that natural gas supplies from traditional sources will be insufficient to maintain a consistently high level of service in the near future. This dwindling of traditional gas reserves will force American Natural and other gas companies to seek new and more exotic sources of supply. In recent years a number of alternative supply sources were considered, including arctic gas, LNG, and SNG based on naptha, LPG and coal feedstocks. Several combinations, all of which included SNG from coal were selected as the most suitable alternative sources of gas supply for American Natural, and thus our company embarked on the formation of a coal gasification project in the early 70's. Work began with the evaluation of available coal supplies in the United States in late 1970. Western North Dakota was selected for several reasons: large contiguous reserves of lignite were available near the surface, similar to German brown coal for which the Lurgi gasification process was originally developed; the conditions for land reclamation in the area are favorable; and the people in the area have a positive attitude toward well ordered development.

"The Wangjialing Coal Mine is the main colliery of the China Coal Huajin Energy Limited Liability Company. The average thickness of the coal seam in District 201 is 6.21 m. Fully mechanized longwall mining was used in this district. The ventilation roadway of panel 20102 was influenced by the retreat mining of the adjacent panel 20104. Therefore, large deformation and severe roof falls occurred in this roadway, seriously influencing the safety production of this coal mine. To support the roadway, cable truss was proposed to strengthen the reinforcement of this ventilation roadway. First, numerical simulation was used to optimize the reinforcement parameters, including the cable installation angle, cable length, and eccentric distance. Based on numerical simulation results, in-situ tests were conducted in the ventilation roadway of panel 20102 with the cable truss technology. In-situ monitoring results showed that the roof-to-floor convergence and the convergence of roadway on two sides were within the safety range. Furthermore, no apparent separations occurred in the roof. These indicate that based on the designed parameters, the cable truss system can effectively maintain the roadway stability under the severe influence of the adjacent longwall mining.INTRODUCTIONCable bolts are flexible tendons composed of multi steel wires, which are wound into a strand (Chen, Hagan, and Saydam, 2018). They were initially introduced in the hard rock mining industry in the 1960s. Later, they found rapid application in coal mines to maintain the stability of excavations (Wang et al., 2015).The standard cable bolt is composed of seven steel wires with a diameter of 15.2 mm. Laboratory and in-situ tests showed that there is a low bonding capacity between the standard cable bolt and the grout (Craig and Holden, 2014; Chen, Hagan, and Saydam, 2018). Then, modified cable bolts are developed based on the standard cable bolts. They are improved by changing the surface geometry of standard cable bolts, such as birdcaged cable bolts (Hutchins et al., 1990) or nutcaged cable bolts (Hyett et al., 1993). Further tests proved that modified cable bolts have better mechanical interlock and friction between the cable bolt and grout, leading to larger load transfer capacity of cable bolts.Although cable bolts have been used for many years, failure of the cable bolting system still occurs. A common failure mode is the damage of surrounding confining medium while the cable bolt is still hanging in the roof, which is caused by the bond failure of the cable/grout interface (Hutchinson and Diederichs, 1996). To prevent the cable bolting system from failing, the cable truss system is more widely used in mining engineering."

The separation of cobalt from other base metals can be achieved using diffusion dialysis in a two-compartment reactor separated by an anion exchange membrane. In this work, a Neosepta AFX membrane was used to study the separation of various metals in an acid-chloride solution. The separation of one metal from another was investigated on the basis of the various chloro-complex stabilities. The metals investigated included cobalt, nickel, copper(II), iron(III), aluminum, zinc and cadmium. The impact of several critical experimental conditions, including the initial metal and chloride concentration in the feed solution and their initial concentration in the receiving solution, on the separation factor and the metal transfer rate is reported in this work. Effective separation of different metal pairs was achieved under the experimental conditions.

The U. S Bureau of Mines is conducting research to develop improved guidelines for selecting the type and pattern of roof support in different geologic environments (Mucho, et al., 1995). As a part of this wider research effort, a multifaceted ground control investigation was conducted at the Diamond TB Mine of RoxCoal, Inc. The study included statistical analysis of mine-wide roof bolt performance, instrumented bolt test areas, stress damage mapping, and pillar design analysis. The mine employs state-of-the-art continuous miner technology, including mobile roof supports and continuous haulage, to retreat mine the Lower Kittanning Coalbed. A herringbone section design makes the stability of the center belt entry critical to efficient retreat mining. Roof cutters formed during section development sometimes set up unstable immediate roof conditions in advance of the belt entry mobile roof supports during retreat mining.

"Following several months of test work, water leaching in mined-out areas at Stanrock commenced on a production basis in February, 1963. A combination of fast high-pres-sure washing and rewashing of stopes on a predetermined cycle, and the intermittent sprinkling of low-grade heaps, using both fresh water and recirculated acid water, has proved most successful. There was also a correlation of daily sampling data points to a relationship between the leach water grade and the grade of the material being washed, the leaching time and the location along the dip. An increasing tolerance for uranium by the acid-producing bacteria is also indicated. A steady production rate of 10,000 to 12,000 lbs. of u.08 per month is being maintained, with an over-all mine water grade of 0.25 lb. per ton and a pH of 2.3."

Underground longwall coal mining sections are operated as sealed gobs if the coal is prone to spontaneous combustion. Sealing along the gate roads during longwall face retreat limits the flow of fresh air (oxygen) into the gob and, thus, deprives the spontaneous combustion reaction of oxygen. In a project sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), researchers at the Colorado School of Mines have used computational fluid dynamics modeling to simulate the flow of gases in sealed longwall gobs. The models were validated using measurements and observations from the field and demonstrate that targeted injection of nitrogen along the gate roads inby the face can be used to control the size and location of explosive methane clouds within the gob and to minimize or eliminate the explosion hazard resulting from the formation of flammable methane-air mixtures.

In the course of an investigation3 of the flow of gases through beds of broken solids the author obtained a number of data .on the specific volume of beds of broken solids of variously mixed sizes. A mathematical theory of the limiting conditions has been developed and some generalizations have been made for intermediate cases. A more definite knowledge of the relation between space occupied and size composition would be valuable to all those who are handling large quantities of broken materials. Such knowledge might be advantageously applied to the operation of a coke oven. For example, the output of the oven depends in general upon the number of pounds of coal which can be put in the oven at charging. It is known that the capacity of one battery of ovens was increased several per cent by slightly increasing the proportion of fine material in the charge.

Detrital minerals of mantle origin have been found in the Green River Basin of Southwestern Wyoming (Figure 1). Pyrope, pyrope-almandine, and chrome-bearing clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene occur on the antmounds of Pogonomyrmex Occidentalis. These antmounds are a common sight throughout the western U.S., and were used by early paleontologists as fossil mammal collection sites. The mound is composed of two types of material; (1) soil excavated during the digging of the nest below the surface (maximum depth 3 meters) and (2) larger grains collected from the surface and placed on the mound, probably to prevent erosion. The selection of grains to armor the mound seems to be based largely on the mean diameter of the grain, with other factors such as weight, sphericity, roundness and composition in decreasing order of importance (Wheeler and Wheeler, 1963). The minerals of this study happen to fall within that mean diameter range. The garnets are found on the mounds as 3-6 mm diameter subrounded to subangular grains. The pyroxenes are also 3-6 mm in diameter and are most commonly subangular laths. The minerals themselves show evidence of abrasion, such as frosted surfaces and rounded edges. Orange peel texture is present on some of the grains, which suggests that kelyphitic rims were once present, but have been removed. Also, no similar minerals were found in sieved soil auger samples to depths of 2 to 6 meters taken near the antmounds. These observations imply a distal rather than proximal source for the minerals. Lamproitic rocks of upper mantle origin are found bordering the "Green River Basin. The best known are the Leucite Hills, a series of ultrapotassic volcanics found on the north flank of the Rock Springs Uplift (Carmichael, 1967). Minor occurrences of mica peridotite and ultrapotassic volcanics are also found on the western end of the Uinta Mountains in Utah (Best, et al, 1968). None of these rocks are known to contain minerals like those on the antmounds. The garnets are comprised of purple chrome pyrope, red chrome pyrope-almandine, and pink to orange low chrome pyrope/pyrope-almandine. Oxide statistics for these groups are summarized in Table 1. These three groups are distinct when their Cr203 values are plotted against magnesium number (Figure 2). The chrome pyropes are highest in Cr203 (1.28-2.66%) and have high, restricted Mg number values (0.781-0.826). The chrome pyrope almandines have similarly high Cr203 (1.29-2.62%) but a lower Mg number range. The low chrome pyrope/pyrope-almandines have the lowest Cr203 content (0.09-0.73) and the widest Mg number range (0.534-0.836). Using the classification scheme of Dawson and Stephens (1975) the chrome pyropes are most similar to garnets derived from kimberlite and from garnet lherzolite, websterite, and harzburgite xenoliths in kimberlite. The chrome pyrope-almandines and the low chrome pyrope/ pyrope almandines are similar to garnets derived from eclogite nodules (Figure 3).

At the last annual meeting of this Institute the programme very properly was drawn up and carried out with the special object of calling attention to the Dominion's position and problems with regard to fuel supplies. That subject, always one of serious concern, was a source of considerable anxiety twelve months ago. It is still so, but in a decidedly less degree than at that time. So far as the immediate fuel situation is concerned our anxieties have been relieved. And I think we can safely say that such a consciousness of our difficulties and determination to overcome them, has been developed in the minds of our people that there will be no slackening of the offensive until a final solution is reached. In selecting a subject of major importance for the present occasion I have felt free to digress from the pressing problems of last year and to go back, for a starting point, to the presidential address of two years ago .. I do not, however, wish to enter the controversy that has developed as a result of that address, though in spite of my own failure to amass a fortune from participation in certain mining ventures, I am decidedly inclined to the optimistic view that Dr. Corless presented of the future of our mining industry. You will perhaps have observed that in its general wording the title of my paper bears a marked resemblance to that of that address. This simila1ity of titles is not accidental. It is intentional on my part.

Sillimanite, chemically named Aluminum silicate, 3Al2O3SiO2 is one of the three forms of alumino silicate polymorphs and commonly encountered in aluminous metamorphic, plutonic, and volcanic rocks and their weathering products. Most of the sillimanite deposits are granular and are of high grade available in coastal areas as associated mineral along with Titanium bearing minerals namely ilmenite, rutile etc. Sillimanite is one of the widely accepted raw materials for the manufacture of high alumina refractories (55-60 % alumina) or bricks. Sillimanite based refractory bricks are used for the lining of Blast furnaces, Arc furnaces, Soaking pits, Reheating furnaces of iron and steel, rotary kilns for cement manufacturing and general kilns for lime production. Considering the vast potential of unexploited sillimanite reserves in India, M/s Trimex Sands Pvt. Ltd., (TSPL)has set up a Mineral Sand Processing plant in 2010 at Andhra Pradesh with a capacity to produce about 50,000 tons of sillimanite per annum besides the production of various heavy minerals such as ilmenite, rutile, zircon and garnet. Traditionally in India, sillimanite is upgraded by froth flotation technique using Oleic acid as a collector cum frother, sodium silicate as depressant and soda ash as pH regulator. At TSPL, Conventional mechanical float cells are installed to float sillimanite. In addition to the usual problems associated with conventional cells, poor flow ability of the sillimanite concentrate is experienced in dry circuit due to the presence of sodium oleate. Fine garnet in the sillimanite concentrate contributes to high iron content in the final product, making sillimanite separation a nightmare for operators (lower recoveries coupled with inferior grades). Various efforts were made to improve the performance of the circuit such as introduction of additional frother like MIBC, optimizing the operating parameters such as pulp density, collector dosage, depressant dosage, air flow rate, pH etc., use of collector aids, stage wise addition of reagents etc. The challenges faced to produce a sillimanite product with stringent quality norms and the efforts made to improve the grade and recovery are described in this paper. Dicho depósito está asociado a la actividad ígnea de centros y domos volcánicos del terciario medio o superior, mientras que la veta Candelaria está constituida por tetrahodrita, enargita, boulangerita, bournouita, jamesonita, esfalerita, galena, bismutinito, chalcopirita y como minerales de ganga, pirita, cuarzo, barita, oropimente, regelgar, marcasita, arsenopirita, así como hay lazos cimoidea. De otro lado, las intersecciones de vetas favorecen la mineralización y el Domo Volcánico Candelaria es favorable a la mineralización al igual que los tufos.

The E h potential during of a iron reducing bacteria such as Aquaspirillum Magnetotacticum (A.M.) can be predicted by a growth model. It also reflects the adsorption of Fe+2 Cu+2 and Mn +2 ions, that can be incorporated into magnetic material called magnetosomes. The Ferric ion concentration during controlled growth of Thiobacillus Ferrooxidans (T.F.) is a function of the bacteria population curve, while A. M. ferrous ion concentration is a function of the integral of the population curve. Charting of the redox potential of T.F. during batch oxidation of refractory ores such as pyrite and pyrrhotite can be helpful to establishing onset and rate the bulk bio-oxidation rate. The onset of biooxidation is marked by an increase in Fe +3 ions that can be correlated with increased growth due to adsorbed electrons.

Zinc-bearing dust from blast furnace gas-scrubbing operation is a well known environmental health problem in the iron and steel industry. Hoogovens IJmuiden (The Netherlands) developed processes to solve this problem. 90% of the zinc is concentrated in 25% of the dust (the fine particle fraction) by means of slurry-hydrocyclonage. The resulting fine particle fraction is treated in a pressure leaching process. Hydrochloric waste pickle liquors have been used as a leaching liquor. By creating optimal leaching conditions more than 98% of the zinc is brought into an acid' solution, whereas nearly all the iron remains in the residue. The zinc can be separated selectively from the solution. The residue can be reused in the blast furnace (via the sintering plant). In the article information is given about the research work and -results of the pressure leaching process as well as the possibilities of the process for solving comparible problems.

Dynamic simulation (discrete event simulation) is the preferred methodology to evaluate the impact of dynamic aspects of processing plants on the overall plant capacity. This tool can be used to: identify bottlenecks in the plant,justify upgrade and expansion projects by evaluating their impact, oroptimise maintenance and operating practices without disrupting the operation. Iron Ore Company of Canada's (IOC) pelletising plant is a complex operation because of multiple products, varying equipment capacity and shifting bottlenecks. Furthermore, with extensive capital requirements for projects and long lead times, a high level of confidence in project outcome is required. Therefore, a model of IOC's pelletising plant in Labrador City was constructed in 2007 by a joint IOC and Hatch team. The model includes both operational and metallurgical aspects in order to better capture the complexity of IOC operation. In this paper, the justification, boundaries, and functionality of the model are described. A comparison of simulation results to historical plant operation is given. It is observed that projects have interactions and that the benefits of combined projects are not equal to the combined benefits of the individual projects. Projects can have synergies that result in greater benefits when combined or can have overlapping benefits that result in lower benefits when combined. The power of the proposed modeling exercise lies in the ability to assess the impact of projects on overall performance.

"Activation mechanism and interfacial reactions in brazing of ShN4 with different AgCuTi filler alloys has been investigated thermodynamically and experimentally. During brazing the AgCuTi filler alloy is divided into two liquids Ll and L2, where the (Cu,Ti)-rich liquid L2 gathers at the ShN4 interface and reacts with it. The concentration of Ti in L2 is high, but due to the strong attractive interaction between Cu and Ti, the activity of Ti in L2 is considerably low. In reaction between ShN4 and Cu-containing brazes a Ti-Cu-Si-N compound is typically formed at the interface. In absence of Cu, in joints brazed with AgTi based filler alloys, extremely Ti-rich solution reacts with ShN4 and as reaction products TiN and TisSh[N] are formed. IntroductionAdvanced ceramics like silicon nitride are increasingly used as structural components in demanding applications as well as in electronics industry. Complex, multicomponent structures for engineering applications generally require interconnections and therefore joinability of ceramics largely determines the possibilities of metal-ceramic structures to enable demanding functions. Brazing with active filler metals, most of which are based on the Ag-Cu-Ti system, has been commonly employed for joining of ShN4 to other ceramics and metals. The interfacial microstructures formed when ShN4 is brazed with Ag-Cu-Ti braze alloys have been discussed in several recent studies [1-7]. However, some inconsistencies exist in the reported results. The formation of layers of TiN and titanium silicides, possibly TisSh, next to the ShN4 has been reported in several studies [1-5], while in another investigation, a layer of an orthorhombic TiSi- Cu-N phase was found beyond the TiN layer [6]. In few investigations the thermodynamics of the ShN4-Ti system has been considered, but no detailed thermodynamic analysis of the chemical interactions between the braze and ShN4 has been provided. In order to resolve which chemical reactions are possible under various joining conditions and thereby to be able to control the brazing of ShN4 the reactions in brazing has to be studied using both microstructural and thermodynamic analysis."

The purpose of this paper is to bring to your attention the various kinds of high performance graphites available today, their characteristics and possible applications. These materials are products of a proprietary high temperature technology developed by Superior Graphite Company. We feel we have only begun to tap the potential of this technology and the utilization of the resulting products. During the course of the paper, we shall investigate high purity, high performance graphites made from raw materials such as mined natural graphites, synthetic graphites and petroleum derivatives. We shall define their characteristics and resulting benefits to current applications, along with applications currently under development. It is our desire to stimulate speculation and development of current high performance graphites and their applications as well as ideas for new high performance products and applications. First, a little background about the process. The technology was developed through a concentrated R&D effort which culminated in 1976 in the construction of a unique furnace capable of continuously processing tonnage quantities of granular carbons at temperatures in excess of 2,500 degrees C. This process is capable of refining various carbonaceous raw materials, including natural graphites, to levels of purity and consistency that were previously unattainable in commercial quantities. Carbon contents in excess of 99.9% are currently being produced on a continuous flow-through basis. Since beginning operation in 1977, this plant, located in Hopkinsville, KY, has been expanded in stages to its present capacity of producing over 45,000 tons of purified graphites and graphitic carbons per year. In addition to the purification process, the technology used allows the introduction of selected elements into the carbon/graphite structure to provide additional benefits. Elements of interest include boron, silicon, copper, iron and rare earths. The characteristics of and applications for some of these products will be discussed later.

THROUGHOUT the Colonial era, Philadelphia was easily , the leading city of North America, and it still held that position at the end of the period, with a population of about 25,000, though closely pressed by Boston, which had slightly over 20,000, and New York, which had nearly as many. It was the center of a region in which mineral industry was important. Thomas Rutter's bloomery, built in the Schuylkill valley in 1716, was quickly followed by many others, and during the Colonial period at least 20 blast furnaces, 45 forges, and iron- works of other types were built in eastern Pennsylvania, which easily led all the other colonies in iron manufacture. During the Revolutionary period others were erected as far west as Fort Loudon, in the Cumberland c alley.^ After 1800 the rapid development of the anthracite mining industry profoundly affected Philadelphia's, development, since transportation of the coal was then necessarily by water, and the streams of the anthracite . regions mostly flowed into either the Schuylkill or the Delaware Rivers. With an abundant near-by supply of coal and iron, with the seat of government, which had been there since 1774, and with a National Bank established there in 1791, one would have seemed safe in prophesying, at the beginning of the nineteenth century, that Philadelphia would permanently remain the leading city of the United States. Education in Philadelphia was at first wholly in the hands of the Quakers, who had established a "Public School" there in 1689, but in November 1739 George Whitefield, who had created a sensation in England by his preaching, though only 24 years old, passed through Philadelphia on his way to Georgia to found an orphan school there. The Romur is one of several properties in the Copper Mountain mining district, Fremont County, Wyo., that contain scheelite deposits. The district lies on the southern slope of the Bridger Mountains, 18 miles northeast of Shoshoni and 15 miles from the rail point at Bonneville on the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad (figs. 1 and 2). The tungsten deposits occur in a zone of pre-Cambrian schists and gneisses that have been cut by numerous basic dikes and granite pegmatite dikes. Scheelite occurs in lenses and pods that lie parallel to the foliation and bedding in the metamorphic rocks. The more important deposits are found in a lime-silicate rock consisting primarily of zoisite but with small quantities of quartz and carbonate. Scheelite was found in December 1941, and the area was mapped by the U. S. Geological Survey early in 1942. In November 1942 the Bureau of Mines commenced work on the Stardust-Comet group for the purpose of developing reserves for war requirements. The initial work consisted of driving an alit in the ore zone a distance of 109 feet. This zone was sampled during the progress of the work, and subsequently surface and underground exposures on adjoining properties also were sampled (figs: 5, 6, 7, and 8). One hundred twenty-four samples were obtained. Sample and assay data are shown in tables 2, 3, and 4.
