This report provides an overview of the worldwide photographic industry and of the applications of photography. It also covers important technological and market trends, with special emphasis on those factors which may affect the consumption of silver in the future. The text is divided into the following eight sections: 1. Principal manufacturers of silver-based photographic products 2. Major product sectors 3. Structure of the international market for silver-based photographic products 4. Silver-bearing raw materials for the manufacture of photographic products 5. Processing of photographic products: recovery of silver and recycling 6. Methods for estimating the use of silver in photographic products 7. Brief history of photography Silver- based photographic materials are made for many applications that require different photochemical and physical response characteristics and a wide variety of formats and sizes. All of these products are laminates consisting of a surface-treated support and bonded gelatin layers. Two basic types predominate - films and papers. Films have transparent or translucent plastic supports (mostly cellulose tri-acetate and polyester), while papers have mostly a paper core coated with polyethylene resin layers on both sides (RC type). The front layer contains white titanium dioxide to provide high reflectivity and the back layer a matting agent. However, a few so-called fiber base papers are still supplied. These have a high quality paper base coated with a baryta layer ; i.e. a gelatin layer containing white barium sulfate. The manufacture of photographic film and paper supports requires special procedures and equipment, because of the severe requirements for chemical purity, optical integrity and uniformity (see Table 1 on page 10 for a list of the principal makers of film and paper supports).

In mineral processing plants it is important to estimate rock composition, size and grindability to improve control of the grinding process. It is well known that variation in ore grindability and size distribution directly affects mills power consumption and throughput. This paper extends a general machine vision approach for on-line estimation of rock mixture composition using color information. Our proposed rock lithological recognition method requires the following steps: division of each image into sub-images, color feature extraction using the Binary Quaternion-Moment-Preserving thresholding technique (BQMP) and support vector machines (SVM) for classification. The BQMP thresholding technique splits the image in two and chooses representatives of each half using the histogram as features. The statistical parameters of the color data can be expressed using the quaternion moments into the representatives. This method can be recursively applied to the sub-images, obtaining 5x2n features in n iterations. Once the feature vector has been computed, each vector is assigned to one of three classes using a classifier. The method was tested on a database containing 20480 sub-images (64x43 pixels) of five ore types as follows: massive sulphide (MS), disseminated sulphide (DS), net textured (NT), gabbro (G), and peridotite (P). These ore types were assigned to three grindability classes: soft (MS), medium (DS and NT) and hard (G and P). The database was divided in 2 subsets: 15360 sub-images used for training and cross validation and 5120 sub-images used for test. The classification accuracy was compared with a method previously published based on a mixture of principal components analysis (PCA) for color, and wavelet texture analysis (WTA) for texture feature extraction. WTA-PCA approach reached a 76% accuracy in test while our BQMP method reached 90% of classification accuracy using only color features. Experimental results show that our proposed method yields excellent results compared to previously published results. El presente trabajo describe la geoquímica y microtermometría de las inclusiones fluídas (IF) de la Mina Chonta, Veta Rublo (VR), ubicada en Huancavelica, Perú, con el objetivo de determinar qué tipos de fluidos se presentan en el yacimiento y, si existieran dos o más, establecer cuál de ellos es el relacionado con la mineralización. En ese sentido, la veta Rublo, está emplazada en rocas volcánicas cenozoicas de la formación “Domos de Lava”, de 8 a 10 ma. de edad (Noble, 1973); su rumbo promedio es N 58º-80ºE y buzamiento 60º-70º SE. Los minerales presentes son: esfalerita, galena, cuarzo, marcasita, pirita, tetraedrita tennantita, calcopirita, guettardita, veenita y bournonita. Estos minerales ocurren en texturas de relleno hidrotermal (crustiforme, brechoide, reemplazamiento y relleno de fracturas) y las alteraciones hidrotermales observadas son: argilización, silicificación y sericitización. Con respecto al origen de los fluídos, existe una mayor salinidad donde la temperatura de ebullición se eleva y con respecto a la salinidad baja, no se indica zonas superficiales con temperaturas bajas ni aguas salobres de origen meteórico.

A novel hydrometallurgical process for the recovery of silver and gold from neutral leach residue that is based upon leaching with thiourea, is described. Laboratory and pilot plant studies have shown that 80-90% of the silver and 60-70% of the gold can be recovered by:? ( i) leaching zinc calcine with 'Spent electrolyte at pH 2.0-3.0 to generate a precious metal-bearing zinc ferrite residue, (ii) leaching of the thickened zinc ferrite with 3-5 g/L thiourea in a six stage carbon-in-pulp circuit, (iii) elution of silver and gold from the loaded carbon with a thiourea- butanol solution, (iv) thermal regeneration of the stripped carbon and (v) recovery of the precious metals from the pregnant eluate by cementation with zinc dust. The reasons for adopting the thiourea CIP leach and the preferred operating parameters for each process step are presented. The requirements for the destruction of any thiourea transferred to the zinc circuit are outlined, and the results of an integrated one tonne/day pilot plant operation at Canadian Electrolytic Zinc are given.

The effect of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on growth and respiration of Thiobacillus, thiooxidans, and Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, organisms involved in acid leaching of copper sulfide minerals and uranium oxides, was examined. Oxygen uptake and growth by T. thiooxidans were inhibited after contact with 0.82 mM H2O2. Inhibition of oxygen uptake by T. ferrooxidans occurred at 8.24 mM H2O2, and growth was inhibited after 6 hours exposure to 2.06 mM H2O2. Higher concentrations of H2O2 can be used without detriment to thiobacilli if it is dissipated prior to reaching the oxidation pond or dump surface. A medida que la extracción del mineral progresa, la necesidad de madera en la construcción de edificios e instalaciones de la mina, también se incrementa. Por ello, el objetivo del presente trabajo señala la importancia de la madera como factor de producción en la industría minera, al tiempo que describe la silvicultura como técnica agronómica de ayuda en dicha manufactura. Revisando los cuadros estadísticos realizados en el Perú durante los años 1949- 1955, muestran que de cada extracción global de minerales (metálicos y carbón), obtenemos el promedio de 0,9 pies cúbicos de madera por tonelada de mineral extraído, con un equivalente de 5 pies tablares por pie cúbico, como factor de conversión. El problema surge cuando al intentar desplazar la venta de madera importada, se agotan las fuentes de desabastecimiento local, generando una crisis de reservas en el mercado libre. En consecuencia, se propone el establecimiento de plantaciones forestales en áreas localizadas y dentro del plazo de 10 a 12 años, las cuales prolongarán la conservación de la madera nacional, mejorarán la calidad de la misma y a su vez disminuirán los precios de venta.

A commercially available Halon 1301 extinguisher has been evaluated as part of an explosion-suppression system for use in coal mines. Studies were made both of the dispersion pattern of the Halon 1301 at an initial pressure of 280 psig, and of the efficacy of this suppressant against 9.5 percent methane-air flames. These flames were quenched successfully only when the suppressant was applied before the fireball diameter exceeded 18 inches.

Gypsum is a product from the neutralization of sulfuric acid by lime or limestone. This paper will discuss specifications for gypsum used in wallboard, cement and agriculture and the factors affecting its utilization potential. Process conditions during the neutralization which enhance or inhibit utilization potential will be included. In addition, this paper provides a technical and economic perspective of the gypsum industry in North America with a view to the factors affecting the utilization of synthetic gypsum in traditional applications. Current production and consumption of natural and synthetic gypsum in Nonh America are described and the impact of their differences on utilization options are discussed.

This paper aims to study the influence and action mechanism of collector Y-89 on the flotation of auriferous pyrite. The measurement to identify adsorption quantity, IR and XPS spectrum analysis and flotation experiment made on the pure mineral were conducted. The research results show that when the dosage of MIBC is 20 mg/L, and pH of 8, the dosage of Y-89 over 60 mg/L, the pyrite recovery rate is greater than 80%.And when the dosage of Y-89is 60 mg/L, dosage of MIBC 20 mg/L, the pH in a wider range (pH=4~9), the recovery is greater than 75%. When the pH is above 10, the pyrite is depressed and its recovery rate is found to be dramatically dropping. Adsorption quantity measurement also shows that the strong alkaline conditions inhibit the adsorption of Y-89 on the surface of auriferous pyrite. IR measurement indicates that chemisorption of Y-89 occurs on the surface of auriferous pyrite. XPS spectrum analysis indicates that without adding Y-89, oxidation reaction occurs on the surface of pyrite. But when Y-89 is added, the chemical environment of Fe on the surface of pyrite has changed. Such findings indicate that with Y-89, chemisorption occurs on the surface of auriferous pyrite.

"Water electrolysis in 0.4 mol/L NaOH solution for hydrogen generation was carried out with ultrasound introduced through the anode. It was found that the cell voltage reduced by 150-300 mV in the current range of 20 mA to 40 mA with ultrasound frequency at 25.3 kHz. The cell operation became unstable when the cell current was larger than 75 mA with ultrasound. This reduction in cell voltage was due to removal of the gas bubbles on the electrode surface, which can be directly observed in the see-through cell of water electrolysis. Ultrasound with frequency of 33.3 Hz was also tried, but no better effect was obtained. The results suggest that ultrasound assisted water electrolysis can have potential in energy savings for hydrogen production.IntroductionIn electrolytic process, the electrode that the bubbles generated on its surface usually covered a thin gas film, which can be caused an additional voltage about 0.15-0.25V[l,2], especially in aluminum electrolysis. To solve the problem, loading the ultrasound removes the gas bubbles from the electrodes, this subject had been researched in recent years. From 1995 Jilai Xue et al[3,4,5]. applied the ultrasound in aluminum electrolysis in lab. The results from Sheng-De Li et al.[6] reveals that can decrease the cell voltage and have influences about the hydrogen and oxygen's output ratio. Although there are many paper about the applying of ultrasound such as in electrolysis[5,6], deposition[7,8], plating[9,10], oxidation of salts substance on the surface of electrodes[l 1] and so on, the effect of different frequencies ultrasound hadn't been investigated deeply.We focus on the anode voltage by different frequencies ultrasound and the bubble behaviors in this paper. The environment of this experiment is in alkaline solution. Through this exploration it can offer a basis for the applying of ultrasound in electrolysis."

Hindered-settling column process has been used for the separation of mineral particles for many years. In this study, a model based on DEM (Discrete Element Method) was used to simulate the movements of particles in a settling column separation process. DEM model is capable of describing the motion of particles and calculating the impact forces between particle and particle, and particle and wall contact under various operating conditions. Drag force, rotation induced Magnus lift force, contact force and the gravitational force acting on individual particles were considered for establishing the mathematic models. The overall motion of the particles in water is satisfactorily simulated by the DEM, and the result shows good agreements with the result of lap-scale experiment.

Central to any business is its Asset Management Plan which encapsulates the business context and key organisational objectives such as profitability, safety and environmental standards. Life Cycle Planning (LCP) is a key component of an overall Asset Management Plan. A comprehensive approach to Life Cycle Planning forecasts the financial expenditure required to support the performance of the asset over the business life. It incorporates capital, maintenance and operational expenditure along with an estimation of economic life. Within its body the LCP provides the detail of the maintenance plan and method of its execution. Once optimised the LCP becomes the overarching plan executed through the application of several elements of the Asset Management Plan to ensure the return on investment from the assets is optimal. Each of the elements of the LCP is bound by a set of loops that provide information based on the analysis of outcomes. These loops drive the continuous improvement of performance and cost over the life of the asset. In this way we ensure that the LCP is a dynamic plan responsive to the changing business environment. The paper being presented today will describe the process undertaken and the outcomes derived when this approach was applied to a $600 M+ coal handling and preparation plant in QueenslandÆs Bowen Basin. It will also delve into the difficulties encountered from both technical and cultural aspects; the latter proving to be the most difficult to manage. It will describe the hurdles and barriers that hampered progress including the human influences and the natural desire to revert to what has been done in the past when things became a bit difficult. In the end the results are there to show that the upfront expenditure and investment in time was time and money well spent and the outcome has the operation well placed to manage the assets in a manner designed to deliver the optimal business outcome.

Solid wastes produced in ironmaking and steelmaking off-gas cleaning systems often contain zinc. The zinc level in these solid wastes is generally too high to recycle the wastes for iron through blast furnaces, but too low to economically treat the wastes for zinc through zincrecovery facilities. The behavior, status, and distribution of zinc in the ironmaking and steelmaking off-gas cleaning systems have been analyzed from three aspects: thermodynamics of zinc condensation, oxidation and deposition, correlation of zinc concentration with particle size and density, and aerodynamics of dust particles in the off-gas cleaning systems. Theory and supporting data show that spontaneous separation of zinc from iron-bearing dust occurs in the ironmaking and steelmaking off-gas cleaning systems. Dry off-gas cleaning systems provide the most favorable conditions and environments for zinc to separate from the dust. If highefficiency dry separators were applied and appropriately arranged in the off-gas cleaning systems, zinc would be concentrated, and the majority of the solid wastes could be recycled for iron recovery through blast furnaces.

"A simple method is proposed for determining the long-term deformation behaviour of evaporites. The theory developed can be tested by measuring the change in diameter as a function of time of a vertical mine shaft opposite evaporite strata. Ultimate shaft closures predicted by the theory agree well with those calculated with the very much more complex theory of Serata (1968), provided that sufficiently high octahedral shear strengths are used in the former.An analysis of measurements made in an isolated opening in a Saskatchewan potash mine shows that the octahedral shear strength of the surrounding potash and halite was approximately 500 psi several years after the opening was mined. This value is less than that deter-mined experimentally for halite by Serata. The same data indicate, furthermore, that the in-situ octahedral shear strength is decreasing slowly with time.The current controversy regarding the actual deformation of evaporites will only be resolved by the cooperation of potash producing companies in releasing data on the long-term deformation of their mine shafts."

"A new Al-Mg-Si-Zn alloy designed for automotive outer panel was trial-produced with industrial procedure. The final product shows a strong planar anisotropy. X ray diffraction analysis shows such strong anisotropy is caused by the dominating cube texture component in the final product. The reason for such high cube texture component was investigated by tracing texture evolution starting from the hot roll slab. It is found that certain cube texture components already exists in the hot rolled slab. The density of cube texture component shows as a wavy change through the following1st cold rolling, inter-annealing, 2ndcold rolling and solution treatment. This study shows that the cold rolling in the laboratory can well represent the texture evolution during the industrial production. The results obtained by lab rolling hints that change of second cold rolling reduction has weak effect on the planar anisotropy, when the gauge of hot rolled slab and final sheet are fixed.INTRODUCTIONWith the rapid progress of light-weighting in the automotive industry, aluminum sheets get more and more application as closure panel and structure parts. Recently the dominating alloy for outer panel is 6xxx series, containing the main alloy elements Mg and Si. The popular gradesareAA6016,AA6111, AA6022, and AA6014. These alloys still cannot satisfy the various requirements from automotive manufacturers. Most suppliers of automotive aluminum sheets are developing their own specific grades according to the customer’s demand. To increase the baking response, anew Al-Mg-Si-Zn alloy was designed, concerning the high combination energy between Zn solutes and vacancies formed during the quenching stage of automotive sheet manufacture. This combination is helpful to the precipitation of ß”phase during the paint baking (Wang, 2015,2016; Yan, 2014).The plastic strain ratio (r value)is a key index of the formability of automotive body sheet. A high r value means a good formability. The r values in different directions can be used to evaluate the planar anisotropy of the metal sheets. The trial produced Al-Mg-Si-Zn sheet shows a strong planar anisotropy with respect to r values. Since the r value is tightly related with texture, the texture evolution from hot roll slab (HRS) to final T4P temper was analyzed with X ray diffraction (XRD) to find the reason for the high anisotropy. Besides, the cold rolling reduction (CRR) was varied in the laboratory to modify the texture distribution, i.e., the planar anisotropy."

The electrolytic zinc plant at the Bartlesville division of Z.C.A. originally used lead anodes containing only 0.25% silver because only H.G. zinc and alloy was to be produced. In 1984, a small addition of strontium carbonate was made to control the surf ace morphology of the cathodes which reduced short circuits and increased current efficiency. Later a drastic reduction in colloid addition further reduced short circuits. Increased strontium additions allowed the production of some S.H.G. zinc. Increasing the silver content of the anodes reduced the lead in cathodes only slightly. More important, the anode scale that was not removed during anode cleaning, entered the electrolyte and contaminated the cathodes with lead. A piping system has been installed to purge the contaminated electrolyte directly back to the leaching section. This has allowed the plant to produce S.H.G. zinc consistently.

These studies are designed to provide basic thermodynamic information of high accuracy facilitating the theoretical study of flame and combustion phenomena. This report is the third of a series3/ presenting results of the study for particular fuel-oxidant systems. The equilibrium composition of the products of combustion and the adiabatic flame temperatures of specified oxyacetylene systems have been computed.

Metal dusting is a corrosion phenomenon that occurs in strongly carburizing gas atmospheres at elevated temperatures. Reaction kinetics and product characterizations of Alloys 602CA and 800 were examined by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD).The results showed that Alloy 602CA is more resistant to metal dusting than Alloy 800. Visual examination and SEM surface analysis showed that Alloy 800 suffered metal dusting attack after a relatively short exposure period. The amount of coke deposits increased on Alloy 800 with increased exposure from 96 to 336 hours. X-ray diffraction on the reacted surfaces identified graphite and austenite in both alloys and some iron oxides/spinel for Alloy 800.

O aço inoxidável austenítico 316 (316 SS) é um dos materiais metálicos mais utilizados em aplicações médicas devido à combinação de propriedades mecânicas e do baixo custo. No entanto, desgaste e corrosão estimulam mudanças permanentes no tecido humano que podem levar à perda do implante. O desenvolvimento de recobrimentos biocompatíveis e estáveis, que apresentem propriedades mecânicas adequadas, e que não sofram ruptura ou delaminação durante o uso, é uma solução muito promissora para melhorar o desempenho do 316 SS como biomaterial para implantes. Neste trabalho, uma liga intermetálica FeAlCr, que tem apresentado propriedades adequadas para a aplicação como biomaterial, foi utilizada como recobrimento sobre um aço inoxidável 316 de grau médico. O revestimento foi obtido utilizando-se a técnica magnetron sputtering por corrente contínua. Os parâmetros de deposição, como distância substrato - alvo e pressão de gás argônio foram mantidos fixos em 50 mm e 5 mTorr, respectivamente. As amostras foram preparadas com os seguintes valores de potência de sputtering: 50 W, 75W, 100 W e 150 W. A adesão dos filmes foi analisada por teste de scratch, enquanto a espessura e a taxa de deposição foram analisadas por perfilometria ótica. As características estruturais foram analisadas por microscopia eletrônica de varredura com EDS.
