The major problem encountered in the casting of hypereutectic Al-Si alloys is the stoppage of flow below the rigidity level of solid fraction. In this study, the flow stoppage mechanism was studied using three Al-Si alloys with 14%, 18% and 22% silicon. The horizontal foam patterns used were 12.50 mm (0.50 inch) wide with two section thicknesses 12.50 mm (0.50 inch) and 6.25 mm (0.25 inch) with a common sprue. The primary silicon distribution along the length of the casting was studied to determine the mechanism of flow stoppage. It was found that the surface of the flow tip of Al-14%Si alloy was smooth with a few undulations. As the silicon level increased, undulations at the flow tip increased. The number and size of undulations were maximum for the Al-22%Si alloy. Microstructural analysis using optical image analyzer revealed that the flow tip consisted mainly of eutectic silicon in the aluminum matrix and a few primary silicon crystals (PSC). The PSC were in the interlocked condition few centimeters behind the flow tip. It was also found that the gap between the flow tip and the PSC concentrated area increased with an increase in silicon level. Phase characterization was done with SEM-EDX to identify the precipitating phases.

In this paper, a new approach that uses hot-top DC casting process to producing multi-alloy ingots is present. The different type and size of composite and coated ingots (4045/3004/4045 three-layer composite ingots with section 630mm by 1500mm and 4045/3003 coasted ingot with F140mm/F110mm in diameter) are cast by this approach. The macro-morphologies and microstructures of the composite ingots, the temperature distribution and the element distribution in the interface zone were investigated, also and the interface bonding strength was measured. Results show that the solid supporting layer formed on the cooling plates plays a key role in the casting process of composite ingots. The solid supporting layer can prevent the blending of two melts by resisting the impact of alloy melt, which ensures the stable casting process and casting high quality composite ingots, because the contact height is increased using hot-top DC casting. In addition, fabrication and properties of 4045/3004/4045 three-layer composite ingots with section 630mm by 1500mm are reported in detail.

Mechanism of the action of nonpolar physically adsorbed reactants in froth flotation is under discussion in the paper. It is shown that their basic influence on flotation includes removing of the kinetics restrictions of the flotation complex formation. Experimental data and practical evidence reported in the paper sustain the proposed mechanism. There are discussed potential dependence of the kinetics of dixanthogen formation on platinum and its influence on the induction time (IT).

Leaching of the surface-coated metals from waste acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plastics (WABSP) has been investigated in the ammoniacal solution. The ammoniacal leaching of WABSP (typically containing 4.1 wt% Cu, 1.3 wt% Ni, 0.03 wt% Cr) efficiently dissolved copper and nickel, leaving unleached chromium as fine particles. The results indicate that the anions of different buffer media for metals leaching follow the order: CO3 2− > Cl− > SO4 2−. A declined leaching with high NH4OH–(NH4)2CO3 ratio (8:1) and a steep rise in extraction with high pulp in solution revealed the influence of anion (CO3 2−) and cation (Cu2+) present in the system. The leaching performed in carbonate solution by maintaining 5.0 M total NH3 concentration as NH4OH–(NH4)2CO3 ratio, 4:1; pulp density, 200 g/L; agitation speed, 400 rpm; temperature, 20 °C and time, 120 min yielded the maximum extraction (>99%) of copper and nickel. Degasification and methane control in underground coal mining is an important area augmenting conventional ventilation in order to prevent possible fires and explosions due to excessive methane emissions. Coal bed reservoir engineering has been applied for many years to coalbed methane production. In recent years, modeling the flow and draining methane, not only from coal bed itself but also from the overlying strata, have been recognized as important areas of expertise for supplementing underground ventilation. This paper demonstrates the applications of coal bed reservoir engineering and modeling techniques for optimizing and controlling methane emissions in longwall and continuous miner sections. Practical applications and some considerations are presented for reservoir modeling, borehole performances, and face emission predictions for various coal bed and borehole configurations. A section on field reservoir studies and well bore log analyses for methane control are also presented as a complementary way of controlling methane and optimizing ventilation.

"The coal mine roof rating (CMRR) was developed by Chris Mark and Greg Molinda to bridge the gap between geological variation in underground coal mines and engineering design. The CMRR accounts for the compressive strength of the immediate roof, the shear strength and intensity of any discontinuities present, and the moisture sensitivity of the immediate roof. The CMRR has been widely used and validated in Eastern US coal mines, but it has seen limited application in the Western US.This study focuses on roof behavior at a Western coal mine. Mine A shows significant lateral geological variation, along with localized faulting and a laterally extensive sandstone channel network. The CMRR is not used to predict roof instability at the mine.It is, therefore, hypothesized that there are other factors that are correlated with roof instability in underground coal mines that could potentially also be included in the CMRR.This hypothesis was tested by collecting 30 CMRR measurements at Mine A. At each measurement location, a binary record of the roof condition (stable or unstable) was made along with parameters, such as depth of cover, thought to also correlate with roof stability. A statistical analysis of the data was performed to determine the parameters in addition to those included in the CMRR, which can be correlated to roof stability.INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUNDRoof fall is one of the greatest hazards facing underground coal miners (Barczak et al., 2000). In 2017, 91 lost-time injuries occurred due to roof fall in US underground coal mines. A further 48 roof falls occurred with no lost days (MSHA, 2018).The coal mine roof rating (CMRR) classification was developed by Molinda and Mark (1994) to quantify the geological description of mine roof into a single value that could indicate mine roof stability and be used in engineering design. It is widely used in the Eastern US as an input for the analysis of longwall pillar stability (ALPS) in underground coal mines. It provides an excellent start; however, it is arguably not fully comprehensive, nor is it widely used in the Western US."

Instabilities in electric steelmaking furnace arcs cause electrical and acoustical noise, reduce operating efficiency, increase refractory erosion, and increase electrode usage. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating methods to stabilize these arcs. To perform experiments to test new hypotheses, Bureau researchers designed and instrumented an advanced, experimental single-phase furnace. This report describes this furnace, which was equipped with high-speed data acquisition capabilities for electrical, temperature, pressure, and flow-rate measurements; automated atmosphere control; ballistic calorimetry; and view ports for high-speed cinematography. Precise environmental control and accurate data acquisition allow the statistical design of experiments and assignment of rigorous confidence limits when potential furnace or procedural modifications are tested.

The Bureau of Mines analyzed the structure of a high-grade metallurgical coke, carbonized at different temperatures in the range 500° to 1,000° C, through X-ray diffraction studies. Growth in the crystallite size with increasing coking temperature was calculated from profile analysis and compared with values obtained from the radial distribution function. The carbonization temperature appeared to have little influence upon the stack height, whereas the layer diameters more than doubled in size between 500° and 1,000° C. These results are comparable to those obtained from other studies of poorer quality cokes.

"A well-considered composite of ZA-27 reinforced with weight percentage 0, 2, 4, and 6% of alwninite particulate has been made by compocasting technique. The elastic properties of ZA- 27 /alwniniute particulate composite were determined by using U1M. The results showed that the modulus of elasticity and UTS of the composite gradually increases with increase in the wt.% of reinforcement. However, the overall ductility decreased monotonically with an increase in reinforcement. The results of these tests· as well as the predictions of several model~ for composite strengthening available in the literature were compared with experimental results. Cooperation between the United States Bureau of Mines and the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain, continuous, since 1924, s made possible this and other papers on safety subjects. Grateful acknowledgment is made to representatives of the board for their assistance in arranging visits to several mine-safety stations, and to F. R. Wynne, Deputy Chief Inspector of Mines, for arranging visits to mines in Great Britain and certain other countries in Europe. During the summer of 1927 the writer had the privilege of visiting the mine-safety testing stations An Great Britain, Belgium, Germany, and France, in the order named. All of these countries have large coal mines, many of which are rated as gassy. Therefore, a the installation of electrical equipment is contemplated each of these countries is confronted with the same safety problem as is the United States that is, the development of electrical equipment that will not, ignite gassy atmospheres should they through neglect or accident surround the equipment. The means employed by these countries in safeguarding gassy mines should therefore be of general interest to safety engineers of American coal mines, and a brief survey is given for each of the four countries mentioned. The fourth or last of these surveys covers conditions in France.

Sustainable Development is a very broad initiative in the mining industry, with major components running over the entire life of the mine. It likely commences with pre-exploration permitting and continues to post-mining final closure and possible land reuse. Most major mining corporations embrace the sustainability initiative, either out of a sense of social responsibility or out of necessity in order to continue doing business. But many may view the overall initiative as an added ?cost of doing business.? In many elements of sustainability, there clearly can be added cost ? some as simple as complying with self-imposed sustainability reporting. Fortunately, one major element of sustainable development can clearly be shown to reduce costs ? energy resource management. This paper will describe how the mining industry sustainable development effort differs from other industries, but can benefit from their experience in energy resource management. The mining industry can utilize proven methods from other industries to further their energy management efforts. In addition, many of the resources developed and employed to promote better energy resource management in non-mining industrial settings will be listed.

Longwall mining appears very attractive from an engineering standpoint because of its simplicity. The use of one long, continuous face can simplify power distribution, ventilation, and supervision, and minimizes or prevents lost time associated with the tramming of equipment in room-and-pillar systems. Since the longwall system is more amenable to automation, it is inherently safer than room and pillar. Remote control of all face equipment from gate roads will obviate the exposure of men in the face area. Considering what has been said, it seems a paradox that more longwall installations are not found in the United States. However, with favorable mining conditions in relatively level seams of adequate height under shallow cover, it has been possible to develop highly productive, mechanized, room-and-pillar systems. Thus there has been no real incentive to employ longwall in the United States. In Europe, mining companies usually have very little choice between the two systems. Pitching seams of low height located at great depth dictate the use of longwall methods. With depletion of its readily accessible reserves, mining conditions will be similar to those now prevailing in Europe, and an increase in the use of longwall in the United States can be anticipated.

"The Kuz-Ram model as originally proposed included an error in assuming that the mean fragmentsize predicted by Kuznetsov’s equation was actually the 50% passing size. In 2003 Spathis began discussions on this issue and recommended correcting the equation. The correction produced more fines in the predicted fragmentation, which had been a criticism of some users of the original model. Ouchterlony subsequently showed that the error had, if anything been beneficial, and that the Swebrec function adequately covered the fines. This author shows that the Spathis correction does not assist the fines correction in examples examined, but tends to underestimate coarser fractions. An intrinsic problem of communication between academics and engineers is a root of misunderstanding on both sides, and requires patience by both parties to enable value to arise."

The effect of face resistance on ventilation air leakage through stoppings was measured in a twin development heading. Face resistance was varied by alternately tightening or loosening the face line brattice to change the line brattice leakage. Results indicated that tight brattice lines are necessary to maintain acceptable airflow at the face but result in higher leakage throughout the entire system, reduced overall ventilation efficiency, and higher operating costs. Conversely, a low face resistance which simulated an auxiliary fan/duct system gave reduced stopping leakage losses, higher quantities of air at the last open cross-cut and greater entire system efficiencies

Increasing fuel prices, unavailabilty and high prices of tyres have imposed tremendous challenges for large open pit operations. Carajßs open pit mines, one of the largest iron ore projects in the world, has been particularly affected due to the high amount of giant trucks operating in this site. On the other hand, environmental constraints push the mining industry towards reductions in fossil fuels, noise and waste generation. As a feasible response to these requirements, an alternative mining method for open pit mining, aiming to reduce or even eliminate the need for trucks has been developed, based primarily on coal opencast continuous operations. This innovative approach for open pits involves the replacement of trucks by fully-mobile crushers, bench conveyors and ramp conveyors. Two different applications have been developed for exploiting waste and ore at Carajßs largest pit, named N4E. To make it possible, mine planning paradigms should be replaced leading to new conceptual design of open pits. This paper shows two case studies (waste and ore conceptual design) carried out at Carajßs mines to anticipate and put forward the future of open pit mining, proving that our industry would be greatly affected by this new way of exploitation, reducing thousands of tons of fossil fuels. Productivities can be enhanced and environmental performance greatly improved. In this approach mine automation can be easily implemented reducing operating costs and man's fatigue.

From the standpoint of known recoverable reserves, the following is the order of importance of the beds: Upper Kittaoning, Lower Kittanning, Upper Freeport, Lower Freeport, Middle Kittaning, Clarion, Pittsburgh, and Redstone. 2. mown measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, me estimated at 1,859 million short tons as of January 1, 1952. Of this, 1,351 million short tons me in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimates because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

"The Adams Mine of Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation is situated on the Boston Township iron range near Kirkland Lake, Ontario. Eight different orebodies have been outlined, with a total open-pit crude tonnage of. about 100,000,000 tons or the equivalent of 30,000,000 tons of concentrate. The ore consists of fine-grained, well-bedded Early Precambrian iron-formation composed essentially of alternating layers of chert and magnetite. Grade averages about 22 per cent magnetic Fe.The iron range varies in width from 3,000 to 4,000 feet and is made up of several horizons of iron-formation, cherty ""quartzite"" and volcanic rocks. The latter consist mostly of basic lava flows and minor amounts of tuff. Dips are rarely Jess than 50 degrees, and the range is believed to represent an overturned limb of a major synclinal structure. Dykes of syenite and lam prophyre, along with local younger diabase, intrude the rocks of the iron range."

Galvanized steel scrap is recycled to B OF converters where zinc escapes from the bath and is captured by the gas control system, appearing in BOF sludge. As BOF sludge contain high iron content, it could be recycled, but due to its zinc content, it is disposed in landfills. In this study techniques were evaluated for zinc layer removal from scrap by sulfuric acid leaching. The effects of coating weight, temperature, time and sulfuric acid concentration were evaluated for three different galvanized scrap. The results showed that the behavior of each galvanized scrap was different. Nevertheless zinc removal efficiency was more than 80% with low dissolved iron in the leached solution.

The dissolution behavior of palladium powder in thiourea solutions has been studied. The variables studied included temperature, stirring speed, and concentrations of thiourea, acid and ferric ion. Palladium was found to be soluble in thiourea solutions in the presence of an oxidant such as ferric ion. The dissolution of palladium in thiourea solutions was found to be chemical reaction controlled with an apparent activation energy of about 2S.3 kJ/mol.
