Since the hypothesis of coal and methane outburst mechanisms based on elastic mechanics gives no consideration to time, it cannot give satisfactory explanation of the outburst occurrence and its development. A creep mathematical model of coal containing gas has been set up through creep tests and analysis under a condition of triaxial compression. Such a model can explain the phenomenon of coal and methane outbursts successfully. The tests proved that there is no essential difference between the rheological properties of prone outburst coal and non-prone outburst coal. Outburst can take place in any kind of coal if the rheological conditions of coal containing gas are met. The creep mathematical model provides a basis for establishing a comprehensive index of coal and methane outburst potential.

"Ferrochrome (FeCr) is vital for the production of stainless and high-alloy ferritic steels, since it is the only source of new Cr units. FeCr production is an energy-intensive process. The pelletized chromite prereduction process is most likely the FeCr production process with the lowest specific electricity consumption (SEC), i.e. MWh/t, currently in operation. However, due to increases in costs, efficiency, and environmental pressures, FeCr producers are attempting to lower their overall energy consumption even further. Recently, it was proven that pre-oxidation of chromite ore prior to pelletization and prereduction significantly decreases both the SEC and lumpy carbonaceous reductants required for smelting. This paper presents the first attempt at conceptualizing the technoeconomic feasibility of integrating chromite pre-oxidation into the prereduction process. Financial modelling yielded a net present value (NPV) at a 10% discount rate of approximately R900 million and an internal rate of return (IRR) of approximatelyy 30.5% after tax, suggesting that the implementation of pre-oxidation prior to pellet prereduction may be financially viable. Sensitivity analysis indicated that the parameter with the greatest influence on project NPV and IRR is the level of prereduction. This indicates that the relationship between maintaining the optimum pre-oxidation temperature and the degree of prereduction is critical for maximium process efficiency. IntroductionStainless steel is a crucial alloy in modern society. Virgin chromium (Cr) units used in the manufacturing of stainless steel are obtained from ferrochrome (FeCr) – a relatively crude alloy consisting predominantly of Cr and iron (Fe) (Murthy, Tripathy, and Kumar, 2011; Beukes, van Zyl, and Ras, 2012). FeCr is produced mainly by the carbothermic reduction of chromite ore in submerged arc furnaces (SAFs) and direct current arc furnaces (DCFs) (Neizel et al., 2013; Beukes, Dawson, and van Zyl, 2010; Dwarapudi et al., 2013). The energy required to heat, smelt, and reduce the chromite ore to the metallized state is supplied by electricity (Pan, 2013). FeCr production is an energy-intensive process, with a specific electricity consumption (SEC) varying from 2.4 MWh/t to more than 4.0 MWh/t FeCr produced, depending on the process applied (Pan, 2013; Neizel et al., 2013). Daavittila, Honkaniemi, and Jokinen (2004) stated that the typical operational costs of FeCr smelters can be divided into four categories, i.e. chromite ore (30%), carbonaceous reductant (20%), electricity (30%), and other production costs (20%). This makes electricity consumption the joint largest factor that influences operational costs in FeCr production."

Mine # 8 of Pindingshan Coal Group, Henan Province, China has an annual production 2 million metric tons. But it encounters many problems, e.g. mine layout is complicated, roadway maintenance is difficult, coal and gas outbursts are severe, production cost is high, etc. The major reason was due to the additive effects of abutment pressure interaction of previous mining in D, E, and F seams. At the request of mine management, an in-depth systematic analysis including underground observation, modeling with simulated materials, and photoelastic experimentation was performed to obtain site-specific results which include the dynamic and static influence zones of mining D, E, and F seams, propagation characteristics of abutment pressure in the floor strata, interburden movement caused by undermining, etc.

SINCE most modem metallurgical plants are operated continuously and on a large scale, successful operation at maximum efficiency demands that an accurate knowledge of the performance at each stage of the process be available at all times. Quantitative analyses provide the most practical process guides, and it is essential to have analytical procedures that combine accuracy and speed. In continuous plant operations, large losses may occur if the time interval between the development of trouble at any stage and its recognition and correction is great. Many metallurgical plants are using rapid colorimetric and spectrochemical methods of analyses for control purposes. So-called "color coppers" may be cited as an example of the colorimetric methods, in contrast with the routine use of the ultraviolet spectrograph for the analysis of steels.42 By means of this more refined spectrochemical procedure, a complete quantitative analysis of the molten metal is obtained every few minutes. During the past two years the Physics Division and the Ore Dressing Laboratory of the American Cyanamid Company's Stamford Research Laboratories have collaborated in a study of the use of spectrochemical methods for the analysis of various metallurgical products. New methods have been developed, which have proved of practical value in plant operation. The following pages give a general review of the principles of spectrochemical methods and also the details of several specific analyses. PRINCIPLES OF SPECTROCHEMICAL ANALYSIS In general, it can be said that a visible light spectrochemical analysis can be performed for any ion or molecule that is naturally colored, or that can be made to react with another to produce a colored salt or complex. Whereas transmission measurements in the ultraviolet and infrared portions of the spectrum are most useful for the analysis of organic molecules, visible light measurements are of particular value for metal salts. Such elements as copper, manganese, cobalt, nickel, iron, molybdenum, vanadium, chromium, phosphorus, mercury, zinc, lead, and a great many others, can now be determined with a high degree of sensitivity, accuracy and dispatch. From the simplest of qualitative determinations, color analyses have been improved to such an extent that, at the present time, through the use of recording spectrophotometers, hundreds of accurate quantitative analyses can be performed by a single analyst during an 8-hr. day after the standardization curves have been established for the ions to be determined.

Stress measurement is at the core of most stability design analyses. It is demonstrated that contrary to accepted practice, it is the field measurement, and not the calculated prediction, of stress that requires most examination and review. Since it is not really possible to quantify rockmass properties, the stiffness values used in reduction of stress measurements and in subsequent design analyses (either empirical or numerical modelling) must consider an appropriate range of values.

MOST commercial alloys undergo changes in phase composition after casting. This is a natural result of the fact that the alloys are not in a state of phase equilibrium as cast and phase changes will therefore take place, with more or less rapidity, in an attempt to attain equilibrium. The practical aspect of aging in zinc-alloy die castings concerns the changes in physical properties and in dimensions that may accompany aging phase changes. Harmful alterations have been reduced to a minimum and zinc-alloy die castings are being produced today that are so stable with respect to dimensions and physical properties that they are entirely suitable for most practical purposes1. In the first paper2 of this series, and in this paper, aging phase changes of zinc alloy die castings have been investigated and the possible influence of these changes on dimensional changes of the castings has been evalu-ated and compared with the dimensional changes actually experienced. The change of dimensions has been selected for practical comparison in these papers because the effect of phase changes on the dimensions of a casting is directly calculable; from X-ray crystal-analysis data of the phase structure. The die-casting alloys considered contain, in addition to zinc, 4 per cent of aluminum, about 0:03 per cent magnesium, and from 0 to 3 per cent of copper. It was shown in the former paper that the eutectoidal decomposition of the beta aluminum-zinc phase, while intrinsically capable of causing a considerable shrinkage, can have very little effect on the observed shrinkage of die castings because it takes place within a few days of aging, whereas the observed shrinkage continues for five weeks. Unfavourable climatic conditions in stopes are of significant economic and social importance due to the following reasons: - Working effect is much lower leading to decreased output and work productivity disregarding implementation of mechanization. - Manpower operating capability decreases much faster under unsatisfactory climatic conditions. Under normal climatic conditions a workman would expend much less effort in line with a shorter effective time for the achievement of identical production effects since the work would be more efficacious. The objective of study of problems and climatic conditions is to make the working environment in mines suitable for normal development of operations. Lowering of mining works to increasing depths and winning of a growing number of small orebodies over a broad area makes the problem of creating suitable climatic circumstances more complex. Mining costs are growing due to bench conditions in line with decreasing metal content in the ore, so frequently the investments required for creating favourable climatic conditions represent, in addition to the selection of mining technology, a very important parameter when making decisions regarding exploitation. As known, the basic factors affecting climatic operating conditions in mines-are: temperature, humidity and speed of air flow, implying that the climatic operating conditions are closely related to mine ventilation. Usually, the concept of unfavourable climatic operating conditions includes increased mine air temperature and humidity and low air flow velocity so that heat exchange between human organism and the working environment is impeded or reduced to minimum. Metal mines in Yugoslavia are characterized by the existence of a large number of active faces - stopes and horizons and lowering of mining operations to increasing depths, so that face ventilation solutions are more and more complex. Since its foundation (1961), our Institute is engaged in investigation of factors influencing climatic circumstances improvement of calculations for air distribution and distribution control in complex ventilation networks and study of problems related to ventilation of large volume and irregular configuration faces, as well as application of gained knowledge in our mines. The peninsula of Nicoya contains virtually all of the known manganese deposits of Costa Rica. These are south and west of the Tempisque River, which flows across the peninsula near its juncture with the mainland. This peninsula forms the westernmost part of the province of Guana-caste, which is the northern. of the two Pacific Coast provinces of Costa Rica. The larger villages are connected by ox-cart roads and trails. The area may be covered on horseback without difficulty except during the rainy season, when rivers are in flood and difficult to ford. This is particularly true of the Rio Seco-Guay-jiniquil area, where there are no inhabitants and few open trails through the tropical jungle. Santa Cruz and Sardinal are served by the Taca Airlines, two planes a week from San Jose and Puntarenas. The port of Puntarenas has excellent loading facilities but none are available nearer the manganese districts; there ore must be lightered to vessels standing offshore. Physiography In Costa Rica there are three physiographic divisions: (I) the central plateau (Mesa Central), a somewhat dissected lava platform upon which are superimposed volcanic peaks, some of which are still active; (2) the Atlantic lowlands and (3) the Pacific lowlands. The peninsula of Nicoya and the larger part of the province of Guanacaste lie within the Pacific low- lands. The term "lowland" indicates relation to the central plateau, as the peninsula of Nicoya is largely mountainous. The mountains of Nicoya form the southern extremity of a range of low hills, which are almost continuous along the Costa Rican coast to the Nicaraguan border. The coast line shows evidence of subsidence. The Gulf of Nicoya obviously is the drowned valley of the Tempisque River. The west coast of Nicoya shows many rocks, shoals, bays, inlets and small islands as evidence of a sea encroachment. The altitude of the manganese deposits ranges from 0 to 800 ft. Topography is of the mature type of wide valleys and low hills, often with abrupt slopes. The climate is tropical and humid; rainfall of 125 in. falls largely between Sept. I and Jan. I. Vegetation often is very dense, the Rio Seco-Guayjiniquil area being truly tropical jungle, containing many hardwoods. History and Production The production of manganese ore in Costa Rica apparently dates from the first World War. It reached a peak of about 10,000 tons in the year 1919, then declined rapidly. Evidence of this period of prospecting has rotted away or been swallowed by the jungle. The war now in progress apparently revived the interest in Costa Rican manganese and has encouraged further prospecting. On August 22, 1966, just 20 months after writing sales agreements with Japanese steel mills, Hamersley Iron Pty Ltd made its first contractual shipment of 52,000 tons to Yawata Iron and Steel Co Ltd. As world news, the event was not spectacular. But to mining men it represented an astonishing achievement. Twenty months of feverish effort and the expenditure of more than $100 million had created a large open-pit iron ore mine, a crushing plant, storage and load-out facilities for sized ore, and a supporting township at Mt Tom Price; a 182-mile standard gauge railway; and port and loading facilities for a nominal loading capacity of 6000 tph as well as a port town, Dampier, on King Bay. The project was executed in the sparsely inhabited, arid, dissected-plateau country of the Hamersley Range in the northwest sector of Western Australia. Hamersley, 60% owned by Conzinc RioTinto of Australia Pty Ltd and 40% by Kaiser Steel Corp, holds sale contracts for ore and pellets valued at $770 million. The main contracts are with the Japanese, who are to be supplied with 65.5 million tons of ore during the 16 years from August 1966 to August 1982 and 18 million tons of pellets over a 10-yr period beginning in early 1968. Of lesser importance at this time, but presaging trends, are contracts for a total of nearly 1.5 million tons to be shipped to England and Western Europe during the years 1966-68. A pellet plant with a capacity of 2 million tpy is now under construction at Dampier and is to be on stream early next year. Another interesting project for which the plans are set, is a desalination plant for sea water to supply industrial requirements and potable water for the town of Dampier.

The upper limit of richness of concentrates that can be smelted by means of the blast furnace without added diluents is fixed by the operation of sintering. A sinter feed with normal gangue constituents, containing more than about 50 per cent of lead, tends to fuse; as a result, air does not come sufficiently into contact with the sulphides at roasting temperatures, and sulphur elimination is poor. Since most lead concentrates now contain 55 to 80 per cent lead, it is necessary to add diluents to lower the grade of such sinter feed to about 50 per cent or less. This not only entails the expense of providing barren diluents when adequate diluents containing precious metals are not available but also appreciably lowers the capacity of the blast furnace to produce lead and increases slag losses. Attempts to desulphurize rich lead concentrates by methods other than sintering have not proved successful. Flash roasting, for example, converts much of the lead sulphide to lead sulphate rather than to oxide. However, this suggested the possibility that deliberate flash roasting of the concentrates to sulphate, followed by sinter roasting of the resulting product, might prove promising, particularly inasmuch as the elimination of sulphur from lead sulphate requires heat alone and not contact with atmospheric oxygen. The sintering of lead sulphate products has additional interest because important amounts of such products are now treated by lead smelters. Industrial research may be defined as a critical and exhaustive investigation to create new and better ways of doing things. The results of industrial research are new and improved products, processes, and techniques. This broad definition, of course, covers investigation of all subjects by either individuals or groups of people, and this chapter aims to examine the purpose (what research tries to do), and methods (or how research is done) as applied in the mineral industries. Concepts and History The idea or concept of organized research probably originated in the universities of Europe. There, groups of scholars banded together for discussion and application of their particular specialty to a common problem. Publication of the conclusions drawn from such investigations gave scholars in other areas the opportunity to review and criticize the work of their colleagues, and one of the hallmarks of scientific research work is the publication and criticism of the results of the investigation. It was not until the late nineteenth century that the concept of organized research for the profit of industry was recognized. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a large number of industrial enterprises sponsored organizations to study the application of the physical sciences with the aim of making discoveries that would result in profit to the sponsoring organization. The tangible benefits accruing from these activities were so great that they, in turn, fostered several other methods for the support of organized research activities. For the large problems involving public interest, United States Government scientific re- search laboratories were set up. As the demand of smaller enterprises for research activities increased, research institutes and consulting laboratories were organized. In Europe the idea of common industry sponsorship of research centers grew and many large research organizations there were sponsored by associations of manufacturers. Finally, in the United States

Some time ago the Detroit Copper Mining Co. had to decide the question whether it would pay to re-treat slime-tailings, and several machines were tested in order to ascertain the type of construction which would give the greatest saving. In previous tests on the ore of this company, several tables proved far inferior to the Frue vanner, and for this reason they did not receive any serious consideration. In the late tests, however, one table was found to surpass the vanner in the percentage of saving made. The Frue vanner used in these tests had been adjusted approximately to the slope which the slime-vanners in the concentrator of the Detroit Copper Co. had at that time, about 2 in. between the inside of the wooden posts, or 0.272 in. per ft. It had not been determined, however, if this slope was the most economical one for treating the slime-feed in the mill, or for re-treating the tailings from the slime-vanners, and I was instructed to ascertain by test-runs, under different conditions, the best adjustments for the work to be done. In order to determine if a change in the adjustments of the machines would improve the results, it seemed sufficient to continue running the tests between the vanner and the table before mentioned, keeping the feed and all other conditions the same, but varying the adjustments of the vanner from run to run. I employed a vanner-man of long experience to operate these machines, who expressed the opinion that a slope between 28 and 2.5 in. between the posts (0.323 and 0.340 in. per ft.) would give the best results. Some runs made this way gave a considerable improvement. While for a slope of 2 in. (0.272 in. per ft.) the saving had been only 40.5 per cent. of that of the table, it was 49.2 per cent. for 2.5 in. An analysis of bolting reinforcement of several large [approximately 18 m (60 ft) cube] pillars was performed. The many overcoring stress profiles in pillars at the mine were used to produce generalized stress distributions at various stages in pre- and post-failure. A complete stress-deformation curve was estimated from this data. The effect of pillar bolting on the load-deformation behavior was extrapolated from the observed unbolted behavior. Bolting can increase pillar strength by up to 10 percent. The effect of bolting on general mine stability was examined with a shoW computer analysis. The computer model was calibrated against measurements performed at the mine, and produced good agreement between measured and modeled stresses. The analysis indicated that bolting increases the bolted pillar safety factors in the event of additional pillar failure by a small amount (approximately 5 percent). Progressive pillar failure is unlikely, because arching transfers most load from yielding pillars to large unmined abutments rather than to the smaller panel pillars.

The indiscriminate surface disposal of coal waste in the past has created a serious fire hazard in the bush of the northern New South Wales coalfields. Spontaneous or bushfire-induced combustion in large neglected dumps of this material has increased in recent years causing a rise in air pollution. Surface methods of coal waste disposal are still being practised, and in many cases new material is being added to old dumps, many of which are burning. CSI RO has conducted research on methods of preventing and controlling fires in coal waste and recommends practical methods of overcoming these problems. Some laboratory and on-site investigations are described and the hazards of improperly constructed dumps are considered. The available techniques of fire prevention and control are discussed in relation to Australian conditions. Proposals for the safe and economical disposal of coal waste are outlined.

During the ongoing research into the possible applications of Virtual Reality in underground operations, the AIMS Research Unit has developed a user-interface driven program which enables a user to input the geometry of underground mines, and add equipment and working processes in order to produce an accurate simulation of their operation. This paper describes the main features of this system (VR-MINE). Virtual Reality is a field which has grown out of three dimensional computer graphics techniques, and allows a user to move freely around a model held within the computer's memory. Movement around this model is carried out by the use of intuitive peripherals such as joysticks, with the user's view from their position within the model being produced in real time on a computer monitor or other device (such as a headset). This enables a user to interact with any three dimensional model and see the results of their actions immediately. VR-MINE is broken into two separate programs, both running under Microsoft Windows 3.1 or above. The first, the editor, allows the user to develop the mine layout and add equipment and personnel. The mine geometry is considered to be made up of various types of objects, for example a straight roadway segment which can be inclined, a junction roadway segment, and a turning segment. The geometry can then saved into a file to be loaded in by the second program of VR-MINE, the viewer. This generates a real- istic representation of the mine, with undulating floors and walls. It also has the ability to display multiple windows on the mine at the same time, which are arranged interactively. The simulation occurs within this program, with the user traversing the model in real time to examine possible areas of improvement in operations. This paper gives a number of examples of how the AIMS Re- search Unit has applied this technology to a range of underground mining scenarios to improve the safety of workers in the under- ground environment. The application discussed include computer graphics and Virtual Reality systems to training, risk analysis, visualisation, simulation, accident investigation and major hazard planning.

For instance, instead of using the terms descending and ascending with reference to the waters resulting in the two concentrations, my modified statement is as follows " The first concentration of many ore-deposits is the work of a relatively deep water-circulation, while the reconcentration is the result of reactions upon an earlier concentration through the agency of a relatively shallow water-circulation. Commonly the deep water circulation is lacking in free oxygen, and contains reducing agents, and the shallow water contains free oxygen. The deep water is therefore a reducing, and the shallow water an oxidizing agent."† Of the papers upon ore-deposits which, in vol. xxx. of the Transactions, follow my own, or which were presented at the Richmond meeting, a considerable number are wholly confirmatory of the conclusions which I have presented. J.-In a paper read at the New York meeting of the Institute last February I presented some notes taken from our experience with the turbo blower operating on a blast furnace. In connection with Mr. Rice's very interesting paper there are a few items that might be of further practical interest. The question of the reliability of this type of blower will naturally be presented. In this connection we would say that our turbo blower has been in practically continuous use during the present blast, which was begun June 7, 1912, with only three interruptions for repairs of any consequence. Soon after blowing in there was developed a tendency of the blower to surge or pulsate. This occurred on operating at a point considerably below the normal capacity of the machine, and was checked with comparatively little trouble by throttling the intake slightly and taking up a small lost motion on the governor connections, a legacy of the previous blast that had not been attended to. All this required only a few hours' time. In. March, 1914, the furnace being banked on account of a blizzard that cut off our freight deliveries for five days, the opportunity was used to replace the carbon packing on the steam-turbine shaft and to repack the steam inlet valves. In June, 1914, the blower was off 8 hr. to replace an oil ring and scrape a bearing. With these exceptions we have made continuous use of the machine and find we can depend upon it with entire safety as a piece of machinery.

Recientes estudios en la ingeniería de voladura de rocas señalan herramientas modernas, como es el caso del sistema JKSimBlast, que han permitido a Shougang Hierro Perú avanzar en la ingeniería del diseño de voladura de rocas desde el diseño original hasta el actual. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe el sistema del diseño, modelamiento, simulación y administración de voladura en la integración de la empresa Shougang Hierro Perú S.A.A. El diseño consiste en modelar cálculos complejos para realizar las modificaciones apropiadas en el diseño y lograr una voladura que convierta al macizo rocoso in-situ en un muckpile de forma apropiada, suelto, con una fragmentación adecuada para los procesos subsecuentes como carguío, acarreo, chancado, molienda etc y que no cause daño por vibración e impacto por presión de onda aérea al entorno de la mina.
