The Flin Flon Mine has been in production for over fifty years, and current mining is dependent on pillar and remnant recovery. One of the last major blocks of ore, and an important economic entity to the Mine, is the North Main Shaft Pillar. A rock mechanics program was initiated through under' ground instrumentation and other subsequent analyses, to establish the degree of instability as min¬ing progressed. Several studies have been and will be undertaken to evaluate the general stability, and possibly improve the chances of stability during pillar recovery. The North Main Shaft Pillar is immediately bounded by cemented cut and fill supporting rib stopes which inturn are bounded by slag and waste filled stopes. The min¬ing method involves a modified longhole open stoping and slag fil¬ling sequence for each mining block in a general mining upwards scheme.

A pilot plant study has been made of the liberation characteristics of a nickel ore under different milling conditions. A series of runs were made ranging from fully autogenous grinding to semi-autogenous grinding with a ball load of 8%. The mill products were sized and assayed then analysed by QEM4SEM. This enabled a full liberation analysis to be carried out to see whether the autogenous grinding leads to improved liberation by promoting selective breakage. Though it is frequently claimed that fully autogenous grinding yields superior liberation this could not be detected in the present study.

Natural petroleum gas occurring in the oil-bearing reservoirs is found to exist either as free gas associated with the oil and/or in solution in the oil. In some virgin fields practically no free gas is encountered under the reservoir conditions of pressure and temperature, although in other fields a considerable section of the "pay" horizon is occupied by free gas. In other words, a given oil field may or may not have a gas cap before the exploitation takes place. However, when the reservoir pressure is reduced to a point below the critical saturation pressure by withdrawals of fluids from the producing formation, the gas dissolved in the oil inevitably begins to come out of solution and becomes free gas. Under the controlled methods of production and drilling, a portion of this gas is produced with the oil to the surface and a portion of it remains within the reservoir to accumulate at higher structural levels toward which it migrates by virtue of its low specific gravity. The rate of growth of a gas cap in a given structure depends primarily upon the rate of decline in the reservoir pressure. If the rate of pressure decline is rapid, the gas cap likewise will grow rapidly. On the other hand, shrinkage in the gas-cap area was noted in some fields in which reservoir pressures wereincreasing. Determination of Gas-oil Contact and Thickness of Gas Cap The gas-oil contact can be conveniently located in the process of drilling a well and by electrical logging. However, very little can be found in the petroleum literature concerning methods of predetermining gas-oil contacts in producing reservoirs. Therefore, the writer feels justified in describing briefly a simple, workable, and inexpensive method of determining gas-oil contacts and outlining the limits of gas-cap areas in a field where such knowledge may be essential for efficient production and development operations. The method involves the determination of the following data: (I) Structural data, such as the depth or elevation of the top' of "pay" horizon; (2) reservoir pressures; (3) tubing and casing pressures at the well head; (4) static oil-pressure gradient; (5) static gas-pressure gradient. At the meetings of this Institute held two years ago, there was presented a very comprehensive paper on the subject of shearing coal. It was well prepared and contained data based upon actual test and experiment. The conclusions reached showed that where the shearing cuts and tests were made and conducted [ ] there was no advantage but a disadvantage from having sheared the coal. In presenting my ideas on the subject of this paper to you, I do not mean to take issue with the author who addressed you two years ago but only to report the advantages which have recently been secured from shearing coal. All of this goes to prove again the well known fact that what one mine's conditions will permit another's will not. A number of years ago, when most of the coal produced was shot from the solid and when the "good, old" pick miner?s pay was based on the amount of lump coal he loaded out of his room, he was frequently seen putting in a vertical cut in the face as deep as he could do so with his pick. This man was the best ac- [ ] quainted with the peculiarities of the coal and, no doubt, saw that his pocketbook would be fattened more if he put forth the extra effort to make this vertical cut. Correlation between Metallography and Mechanical Testing By H F MOORE (Henry Marion Howe Memorial Lecture Trans, vol 120 11,000 words ) The lack of effective correlation between metallography and mechanical testing from the days of Reaumur to the present is noted, and two general problems of such cor¬relation are stated (1) the correlation of qualitative test results with quantitative, and (2) the correlation of average results with maximum or minimum results Some correlation has been achieved, notably in the field of heat-treatment and in the study of elastic strength of metals Correlation is in the process of being developed in several other fields, including the quantitative study of the effect of grain size of metal on mechanical properties, of grain size and type of crystalline structure on the sensitivity of metals to weakening at holes, notches and other "stress raisers," and in the study of the starting phases of spreading, "fatigue" cracks Correlation of mechanical test results and metallographic study is needed in the study of such problems as the various theories of failure of metals, the meaning of and tests for service ductility of metals, and the relative damaging effect of defects inherent in metals, such as minute cracks and segregation, as compared with the damaging effect of "imposed" stress raisers, such as screw threads, sharp shoulders, etc The neces¬sity for more correlation of metallography and mechanical testing during student days is emphasized, and also the need of a better understanding on the part of engi¬neers of the significance and limitations of metallographic apparatus and results and of X-ray diffraction This should be matched by a better understanding on the part of metallurgists of the significance and limitations of mechanical tests of metals, of testing machines and strain-measuring apparatus

The 74th Regular Meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute convened at The Mark Conference Center, Lionshead Village, Vail, Colorado, and was in session at 10:00 a.m. Past President, Ralph Moore, Vice President, Operations, Westmoreland Resources, Hardin, Montana, called the meeting to order. The membership was asked to stand and pledge allegiance to the flag. He welcomed members and guests and thanked Park Lamborn, the Program Chairman, for the excellent speakers and program he engineered. He mentioned the cancellation of our golf tournament due to the conflicting dates with the Annual Jerry Ford Invitational Golf Tournament. He thanked all of the committees with a special "thank you" to Loren Linville and Gussie Whiteside. He introduced President, Shirl C. McArthur. President and General Manager, American Coal Company, Huntington, Utah. A biographical sketch follows: Mr. McArthur, a native of Huntington, Utah, began his coal mining career shortly after graduating from North Emery High School and worked his way up through the ranks, having worked at every job available underground. For example, he dug coal with a "banjo" at the Independent Coal and Coke Company in Kenilworth. In the summer of 1941, he worked at Straight Canyon Mine as a timberman and advanced to section foreman in four years. He was face boss for part of the time. In October 1946, he received a call from the LDS Church General Welfare Board (presided over then by Marion G. Romney) and took over as superintendent of the Church Mine. He operated in that capacity until the mine became privately owned in 1971. In 1961, Mr. McArthur formed Castle Valley Mining company, and in 1970, he organized American Coal Company, which he presently owns and operates.

The flotation chemistry of the commercial INCO matte separation process was investigated. The slow cooling of Bessemer converter matte forms discrete phases of Cu2S and Ni3S2 and a Cu-Ni alloy. After magnetically removing the alloy, the Cu2S and Ni3S2 are separated by flotation at pH 12.4 (saturated lime) using diphenyl guanidine (DPG) as both collector and frother. DPG has been used exclusively in this flotation process because of its unusual selectivity for copper minerals. The surface product resulting from chemisorption of DPG onto the Cu2S was identified as the double salt Cu(DPG)2SO4,.CU(DPG)2(OH)2. The adsorption followed Langmuir behaviour up to a monolayer coverage. In the absence of DPG, the rapid adsorption of oxygen by Cu2S in flotation pulps was observed. The surface product was identified as the insoluble basic copper sulfate CuSO4.3Cu(OH)2 with the production of sulfate ion. In the presence of DPG, the oxidation reaction appears to be suppressed. The frothing properties of DPG and commercial frothers were compared. DPG is not a powerful frother. Batch flotation tests confirmed that DPG is a highly selective collector when compared to most sulfhydryl collectors.

DATING back some five years ago, various foundries made inquiries as to the probable total carbon content in a given specification and grade of pig iron. Up to that time we had no data, and except for a few occasional determinations of total carbon, no attempt had ever been made to set up routine determinations of total carbon. In fact, at that time, a cast analysis was considered sufficient, without examining at further length into possible variations of analysis between ladles of the same cast. In view of the various inquiries as to total carbon, we sampled all piles of all grades of pig iron, making complete analyses. Finding some variation in carbon content, we secured more samples and plotted the carbon content with respect to silicon in each grade of iron except for the higher phosphorus foundry iron, where it was necessary to divide the group into twenty-point phosphorus ranges. This is easily understood, owing to the falling off of carbon content with the increase in phosphorus con-tent, silicon in each case being the same. In addition, these curves clearly demonstrate the lowering of the carbon content as the silicon is increased. In order to insure accuracy and reliable determinations the following method of sampling and analysis was employed: Two pigs selected from each end of the car, each car containing iron from one 50-ton ladle, are drilled with a 5/16-in. drill all the way through from top to bottom in the center of one section of the pig. The drillings are collected and transferred to an 80-mesh sieve; the portion passing through and the portion retained are placed in separate envelopes and labeled accordingly. The amount of sample in each envelope is weighed to obtain the proportionate amount of coarse and fine drillings, then a factor weight of sample (1.3636 grams) made up of proportionate

PETROLEUM has been known in Japan since at least 668 A. D., for a picture shows the presentation, during that year, to the Emperor Tenchi (Tenji) of "burning water" and." burning earth" by his subjects from Echigo Province, which today is the largest producer of petroleum in Japan. The burning water was doubtless petroleum and the burning earth either bituminous shale or oil-soaked earth or rock from near the oil seepages. The early methods of getting the oil were simple and similar to methods used today in Japan and in China. Where the seepages occurred, trenches or shallow wells were dug along the seepages and allowed to fill with oil which was then bailed out; in some cases, they filled with oil and water and overflowed. During the 300 years following 1500 A. D:, the use of petroleum in Echigo Province seems to have increased considerably, as compared with earlier centuries, and records show that in 1818 the depth of the wells had been greatly increased. Doubtless, they passed through the seepages and tapped the shallow oil-bearing strata; probably some of these deeper wells were dug before that time. The real value of petroleum was not recognized until early in the Meiji era, which began in 1868, when the Japanese learned that the kerosene that was being imported was derived from petroleum. Guided solely by information obtained from books, they refined the oil and increased the depth of their wells in order to increase the production. The deepest well, dug by hand, about this time was 894 ft.1 (273 m.) and by 1874 the recorded production reached 3499 barrels. In 1876, Benjamin Smith Lyman prepared geological maps of the Echigo oil field, which were the first. of such geological maps made in Japan, and based on these a more enlightened development of the oil fields began; the. Japanese, however, still dug the wells by hand. Toward the end of the '80s, an American well-drilling outfit was secured, but the efforts to use it failed from lack of experience by the operators. 5. Development of Initial Probing System 5. 1 Introduction The preliminary evaluation of a variety of potential methods for initial probing showed that the optical system using closed circuit television (CCTV) and the sonar, or acoustic ranging, system were the most promising. The former is capable of pro¬viding a visual display of the mine passages in a clear, non-smoky environment, and the latter is capable of providing a map of the spatial location of the coal surfaces making up the entries, as well as objects, such as cribs, mining machines, etc., in the passages in both smoky and non-smoky environments. The sonar system used in conjunction with the CCTV in a clear environment can greatly assist in resolving the spatial distribution of objects seen on the TV screen. Further, in a smoky environment the interpretation of the sonar information could be facilitated if some visual information were also available. CCTV systems exist but require some modifications to suit this particular application. The Industrial Hazards and Communications Division of the Bureau has an ongoing program for the development of such a CCTV system. Rather than duplicate this effort in developing a CCTV system, it was decided to evaluate the possibility of utilizing their system for initial probing, while continuing with the develop¬ment of a system which would work in any environment, including the presence of dense smoke. The concept of using sonar for the initial probing of mine passages represents the application of new technology requiring development. The results of such a development effort undertaken during the course of this program are described in the following sections.

DURING the past 10 or 12 years very little information has been made generally available concerning the commercial possibilities of separating materials by means of static electricity; and yet during that same period important improvements have been made in various branches of the science of electricity, which, when taken together, and applied to electrostatic separation, have resulted in important improvements in that art as well. For example, much improvement has been made in high-voltage electrical equipment such as full-wave vacuum-tube rectification and improved mechanical rectification. Great strides have likewise been made in the development of insulators for high-voltage work, not only in the materials used but also in the design of the insulators themselves. Again, in another field, the development of air-conditioning equipment has improved the technique of controlling the surface condition, through drying or humidifying, of the various materials that are passed through the electrostatic separator. In many authoritative publications and textbooks, the electrostatic separation process is declared to require a balance far too sensitive for general commercial application. For example, one publication1 in the past has referred to an unfavorable effect on the process caused by varying atmospheric conditions such as humidity. Some2 have even gone so far as to state that sunlight and shadows may seriously affect the separating efficiency of the process. Such statements may have been true in the early development of the art, when the source of static electricity was derived from a friction disk machine, such as the Wimshurst. The Blake Mosher equipment and the work of Huff in applying motor- generator sets, transformers and mechanical rectification overcame much of this kind of objection to the commercial application of the electrostatic separating process. IN his inaugural address in 1949, President Truman made a policy declaration which launched the foreign technical assistance program known to the world as Point Four. Congress passed Public Law 535 defining the scope of the program and holding activities to certain limitations. It also provided $34.5 million for the first fiscal year. The Technical Cooperation Administration was established within the Department of State to coordinate and direct a program to include "economic, engineering, medical, educational, agricultural, fishery, mineral and fiscal surveys, demonstration, training and similar projects." The mineral programs of Point Four have been staffed and managed by two agencies of the Department of Interior, the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines. The Geological Survey is concerned primarily with water-supply problems, the discovery of mineral deposits, and the determination of habit, shape, and grade of mineral deposits. The Bureau of Mines is concerned with determining the commercial potentialities of mineral deposits, mineral technology, and the production and distribution of mineral commodities. Mineral projects comprised only 1 pet of the first year's budget. In spite of the relatively insignificant expenditure compared to those for food, agriculture, and health, a commendable record has been achieved.

(Butte Meeting, August, 1915.) IN view of the prominence which the conical mill has attained in the fine-crushing field within the few years since its introduction, the following comparison with its more mature forerunner, the Chilean mill, based on extensive tests, is submitted in the interest of the milling profession. Soon after designing the concentrating plant of the Miami Copper Co. in 1909, the Hardinge conical mill made its appearance in the milling forum. Its possibility as a suitable crushing device for the plant was well recognized, but in view of the lack of commercial demonstration, at the time, as to capacity, efficiency for desired product, and the still more uncertain factors of cost of maintenance and power consumption, it was deemed that the immediate adoption of this machine throughout the plant would be a hazardous undertaking. For these reasons it was decided to equip the majority of the imme diately required units of the plant with Chilean mills, the fine-crushing proficiencies of which were better known, and one section with Hardinge mills, to serve as a test unit for the guidance of future installations and replacements. Thereby, after 1.5 years' operation with both types of mills, a thorough test as to metallurgical efficiency and cost economy has been obtained. The conical mill used in these tests is the 8-ft. Hardinge pebble mill, having a cylinder 22 in. in length. The cylindrical portion of this mill is lined with cast-iron liner plates, and the conical extensions with silex bricks bound together by cement. Each liner plate carries a projecting lifter, the function of which is to increase the height of drop of the lifted material. Danish No. 5 pebbles, obtained from the coast deposits of Denmark, are used for the grinding charge. The Chilean mill used is a fast-running, 3-roller, 6-ft. Saturn mill, with screens of 0.037-in. opening. The feed to these mills is the oversize of Callow screens having 0.029-in. openings, which follow rolls crushing to 0.5 in.

A total of 260 micropiles were installed as part of a retrofit effort for two existing bridges. The micropiles consisted of hollow core bars installed under limited headroom conditions. Of the total number of micropiles, 180 were installed in submerged sand and 80 were installed in stiff, silty clay. The micropiles were drilled using a lean cement grout which was re-circulated for de-sanding and re-use. Final grout was injected upon completion of drilling to the design tip elevation. The micropiles were subject to a rigorous quality control that included grout quality testing and proof-testing of each production micropile. This paper presents a description of the procedure for installation and quality control of the micropiles. The successful proof-testing of all the production micropiles showed that hollow core bar micropiles can be used effectively in granular and fine-grained soils. Hollow core bar micropiles offer particular advantages when installed in submerged sand formations with respect to other traditional micropile types. The results of the proof load tests are presented in a companion paper.

IN the course of small seale experiments on the electrodeposition, of copper, extremely brittle deposits were obtained from electrolytes prepared by leaching calcined chalcopyrite with aqueous sulfuric acid. It was not possible to strip the metal without fracture after it had been deposited from such electrolytes onto smooth oiled copper sheets, the usual plant procedure for the production of so-called starting sheets. The embrittlement did not occur with electrolytes made either by leaching the calcine with water or by treating an acid leachate to remove iron as hydrous ferric oxide. The electrolytes which produced brittle deposits were found to contain molybdenum in concentrations of 10 to 25 mg per 1, whereas those which produced ductile deposits contained <0.5 mg per 1. Synthetic electrolytes having the composition: Cu", 40 gpl; Fe", 0.5 to 1.0 gpl; Fe3+, 0.5 to 1.0 gpl; and H,SO,, 10 to 50 gpl, were prepared from reagent-grade salts; by adding ammonium molybdate, the embrittling effect of the higher concentrations of molybdenum (VI) was strikingly confirmed. The brittle deposits contained up to 0.03 pct Mo. The importance of oxidation state of the molybdenum was demonstrated when the electrolyte containing it was circulated continuously through a bed of fine copper metal during deposi- tion. Under these reducing conditions, the cathode deposit was ductile and molybdenum could not be detected. Molybdenum has not been recognized as one of the metals causing embrittlement of copper nor is it listed among the usual impurities. In most elec-trowinning plants there is a purification step which removes iron from the leachate before electrolysis. In these cases molybdenum would be coprecipitated with hydrous ferric oxide. In the case of the large leaching plant at Chuquicamata, Chile, where the leachate is reported to contain considerable molybdenum, it would be reduced to a lower oxidation state during removal of chlorine by means of cement copper. This may explain why the embrittling effect of molybdenum has not been reported previously. Moreover, in copper refining plants where soluble anodes have been prepared by a high temperature smelting process, it is most unlikely that any molybdenum would remain with the copper, whereas the calcines in this work were prepared in a fluidized bed reactor at a temperature not exceeding 720°C. PRIOR to 1936, the Ontario Refining Co. received all incoming blister copper from The International Nickel Company&apos;s smelter in the usual form of 460-lb. cakes, or slabs. These were received in open cars in lots of 250 pieces. At the refinery the cakes were unloaded onto narrow-gauge cars, for convenient handling and pickup by charging cranes. In March 1936, an investigation was started on the feasibility of trans-ferring converter copper in the molten state from the smelter to the refinery anode furnaces, a distance of 114 miles. Although common in steel practice, the transportation of blister copper in this form had not previously been attempted and a preliminary study of the various factors involved was therefore necessary. For this purpose, a series of experiments was made in which molten copper, removed at different stages during the furnace cycle, was held in a small portable holding furnace. This vessel was essentially a refractory-lined steel cylinder provided with ports for filling and emptying, heated by an oil burner. Dimensions of the steel shell were 3 ft. 10 in. diameter by 7 ft. 3 in. long, and thickness of refractories depended oil the design and combination used for the particular experiment. The vessel was filled with approximately 2 ½ tons of copper at a predetermined temperature, the lining having been preheated to a definite point by means of an oil burner. All openings were well luted and temperature readings were made every 15 min. by means of an immersion-type thermocouple. In this manner the rate of heat loss resulting with different refractory design could be developed. The ratio of exterior surface to weight of metal was taken into consideration in comparing the experimental results with what might be expected for a full-sized unit, and observations were also made on type and degree of slag accretion. It was not possible to get as much information on this latter point as desirable, but all evidence showed that the problem would be control of slag build-up rather than attack oil refractories.

For safe and efficient mining operations, it is essential that environment and equipment status be monitored. A system that gives quick access to status at any given time, and also permits quick analysis of their history, is required. Such a computer based monitoring system has been installed at West Cliff Colliery.The system is based on 2 super mini computers. Three major sub-systems monitor conditions in the longwall operations, environmental conditions in the intake and return roadways, status of the underground and surface installations, and mining and transport equipment.

The southern West Virginia coalfield was formed in a rapidly subsiding depositional basin associated with deep-seated growth faults. Subsidence began to the southeast during deposition of the Pocahontas Formation, and then shifted to the northwest during deposition of the New River, Kanawha, and Allegheny Formations. Rocks of all the coal-bearing formations grade into massive sandstones to the northwest. For the No. 3 Pocahontas, Sewell, Campbells Creek, and No. 5 Block coals discussed in this study, the overall sulfur and ash values of each coal seam increase gradually toward the northwest. The thickness of each coal tends to increase toward the southeast. These trends are partly a reflection of the differential subsidence of the coal basin along with varying degrees of peat accumulation and degradation. The northwest side of the coal swamps underwent relatively less subsidence and, thus, more degradation due to increased aerial exposure, with a resulting increase in the sulfur and ash values of the coals, and a decrease in the thickness. The open sea existed to the west of the coal swamps, and this marine environment also contributed to the higher sulfur values to the northwest. Coals of the Pottsville Group in the southern West Virginia coalfield generally have sulfur values between 0.6-1.0% with some as high as 2-3% on the northwest edge of the coal basin.

No one who has visited our Western mining districts, and studied the economical part of the beneficiation of the ores occurring all over that vast extent of country, can underrate the high importance of the above subject. By far the larger number of the districts which contain smelting ores, i.e., argentiferous and auriferous lead, or copper ores, are situated in the Great Basin, that great plateau between the Rocky Mountains on the east, and the Sierra Nevada on the west, almost the whole of which is comprised at present in the boundaries of Nevada, Utah, and part of Arizona. This region is essentially a barren country. The extreme dryness of the atmosphere permits but a scanty vegetation in the plains ; and even in the detached mountain-chains running through it-generally from N. to S., or from N. W. to S. E.-there are no trees found except dwarfed pines and mahogany, at the head of sheltered ravines, and a few cottonwoods and willows, which fringe the insignificant streams, before the water sinks in the arid plains. Nearly all the mountain-chains in this region are rich in silver ores. That class of these ores which is adapted to amalgamation, and rich in silver, has been worked with profit for more than ten years.
