Eight members of the Board, the Secretary of the Institute, and eleven guests were present. Vice-president Henry S. Drinker presided. The President was authorized to appoint delegates to a meeting, on May 16, of the League to Enforce Peace. The Joint Conference Committee reported that the American Institute of Metals had accepted the invitation to form the Institute of Metals Division of this Institute. The Committee on Publications of the Institute of Metals was added to the Committee on Publications of the A. I. M. E. Exchange of one volume of Transactions of the A. I. M. E. at reduced price to members of the British Institute of Metals was authorized, in return for the reduced price given to our Institute of Metals Division on the annual proceedings of the British Institute.

A new approach to processing an indigenously available low made molysulfide concentrate by chlorination with elemental chlorine in presence of oxygen is reported. Recovery of nickel and copper values associated with the sulfide concentrate by suitably treating the residue obtained after chlorination is also reported.

For an exploration area with a predetermined grid of data points, a construction is given for elementary blocks which subdivide the entire area without omission or overlap, and with the property that each data point is situated at the centre of its corresponding block. The construction has a useful optimal property, and more importantly avoids an error which has been made recently in more than one publication.

I've talked a number of times in the past year or so to audiences like today's about culture -about thinking of it, understanding it, respecting it. So, rather than talk just yet about your laws for mining on Aboriginal land and the successes some of us and some of you have been able to achieve, I'd like to first of all talk about cul- ture as I understand it. Anyone who proposes any kind of development on Aborigi- nal land needs to have some basic understanding of what we, the traditional owners of that land, are about. Without that under- standing, you will find difficulty in coming to terms with us. Many people have experienced this difficulty and, unless we can do something about it together, many more will continue to find it.

HENRY FAY (communication to the Secretary*).-In reply to the discussion of my paper, I wish to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to the Chairman and the various gentlemen who have taken part. I regret that others have not offered criticism, for honest differences of opinion often lead to the truth, and suggest new lines of work. An experiment has been made which bears on Prof. Sauveur's discussion and which helps to emphasize the conclusion that cementation is not a factor in the hardening of: the surface. Dr. Langenberg, of the Watertown Arsenal, has heated for me, in vacuo at 1,000° C., a piece of the metal containing a hard surface. The microstructure shows uniform distribution of carbon throughout the metal, showing that no carbon has been added to .the surface and heating in vacuo has prevented any oxidation of the surface.

The Lucy furnace, owned by Messrs. Carnegie, Kloman & Co., and located on the Alleghany River, on the outskirts of Pittsburgh, is a splendid modern furnace, 75 feet high, and 20 feet bosh. She had been working well on low grade ores of about 50 per cent., producing daily 68 to 75 tons. There was on stock 500 tons of Republic ore, one of the purest and best of the Lake Superior ores, averaging over 68 per cent. of iron, which had been procured for the purpose of making a trial for Bessemer iron. This was charged by itself, and Mr. Skelding, the founder, reports that he did not succeed in getting a single cast when it came down, before the furnace chilled from the hearth to the top of the boshes, some 25 feet. Short term electrodeposition experiments (up to 80 min.) at two current densities 220 and 275 A/m2 with varying concentrations of thiourea and glue were performed to determine the optimum levels of glue, thiourea and current density for industrial copper electrorefining. White Light Interference Microscopy was used to acquire digital images of the morphology of the electrodeposited copper. Scaling analysis was employed to pa-rameterize the morphological information encoded in the images. The limiting rough¬ness, *, the critical scaling length, Lc, and the aspect ratio, 4*/ Lc, were determined as a function of the deposition time and the amount of organic additives. These parameters were used to calculate the dynamic exponent, B, the roughness exponent, 1/z, and the as¬pect ratio exponent, y, plotted as a function of glue and thiourea concentrations. These 3D plots allowed us to find conditions corresponding to the minimum of B and y, at which the deposited copper is characterized by a small roughness and a dense structure.

The potential worldwide "market" for metallurgical bauxite is about 94 million MT. The high degree of concentration of the alumina sector, combined with the high percentage of long-term contractual relationships, results in a small spot market with an illdefined price structure. Further segmentation occurs based on bauxite quality and alumina plant design. The potential 'free" market is estimated to be about 18 million MT that represent the requirements of nonintegrated alumina producers. It, too, is covered almost entirely by multi-year supply contracts.

Explosive casting of overburden is defined as the use of explosives in blasting to move overburden to a spoil pile without rehandling. Studies of the economic feasibility of the method, and the formulation of a design hypothesis involving rock properties, and blasthole geometry are presented. These studies indicate that if technical feasibility can be demonstrated to increase surface coal production, considerable economic advantage would accrue to coal mine operators.

An attached growth aerobic biological treatment process has been developed at Homestake Mining Co.'s Lead operation which not only oxidizes free and complexed cyanides, including the stable iron complexed cyanides, but also thiocyanate, and the oxidation byproduct ammonia. Through the employment of a mutant strain of bacteria which has been gradually and specifically acclimated to the waste, these potential pollutants are mineralized to relatively harmless sulfates, carbonates, and nitrates. The resultant effluent, through toxicological testing, has been shown compatible with the receiving stream, which serves as a cold water marginal trout fishery.
