Converters have been playing an important role in the extraction and processing of metals ever since the first type of converter was invented about 100 years ago. Historically their operation has been mainly based on the experience of talented operators rather than on strict control and optimization technologies. However, in the new realities of unavoidable necessity to increase productivity and in the conditions of diversification of primary materials from various geographical areas, improving control and optimization techniques have become indispensable. In this paper a review of the authors? previous work in terms of improving control and optimization of converter operational practices related to magnetite content and precipitation, slag and metal blows, problematic and dangerous elements such as As, Sb etc. has been described by highlighting the advantages that the new control and optimization methods and tools bring to everyday converter practices. Several examples are given and future work is underlined

"The application of a thin spray on liner was implemented in longwall T-junction sections in 2009 for the first time. The development of the material and the application is based on a technical cooperation between RAG Deutsche Steinkohle AG and BASF Corporation. The report gives an overview of the first trials. The underground test occurred in a seam with a height of 1.5 m (5 ft) in a depth of 1,100 m (3,609 ft). The roadway is dual-use entry and the roof strata is composed of shale and sandy clay. In some sections geological faults impact the surrounding strata. The poor conditions induce separating and loosening of roof rock. Several remedial actions have to be implemented for decreasing deformations at the face entrance.The application of thin spray on liner (TSL) provides simplification and cost reduction of supporting work at longwall T-junction. The installation of TSL to avoid roof and coal fall operations for lagging are omitted.INTRODUCTIONFor safe operation of face retreat in dual-use roadways, the processes of securing and stabilizing the face end area are very important in order to minimize deformation and stress. Avoiding roof and coal fall are the main concerns for safe operation. For that reason different methods of reinforcement are tested in underground operation. In this paper the application of TSL is presented.The specifications of TSL are described, followed by the case study results. The underground study is located in one mine of RAG Deutsche Steinkohle. The extraction of the hard coal in this mine is characterized by great depth and high stress. There are poor geological and geotechnical conditions. The roadway used for the underground application was headed with the support system combination type A, which will be described later in the paper. After the first face retreat, deformation of steel arch support and bagging destroyed the roadway, so for the second face retreat remedial actions had to be undertaken. For this a new system of reinforcement, simplifying the supporting work at the longwall T-junction was tested. The reinforcement consisted of different parts that are described in the following report. Furthermore two different versions were applied. One method is the operation with TSL and the other one is the use of concrete for sealing. Both methods are compared in the text."

From 2013–2017, there were over 1,120 documented injuries, including fourteen fatalities, from ground falls in underground mines in the United States (MSHA 2017). The majority of these ground-fall injuries were not caused by a major roof collapse, but from falls of smaller rocks from the immediate roof. Roof screen can significantly reduce the number of these injuries and has been widely used in underground coal mines for surface control. Because of the potential of reducing ground-fall injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is further evaluating the performance characteristics of welded-wire screen as used in underground coal mines by conducting a laboratory testing program using the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) in NIOSH’s Bruceton Research Center Laboratory in Pittsburgh, PA. The load-displacement characteristics of an 8-ft x 12-ft area of 8-gauge welded-wire screen were evaluated using a test frame designed for testing multiple load-pull locations. In previous tests, load-pull contact was always in the center of the bolted screen section. In this study, larger pull contact areas are used to simulate roof falls. The information obtained in this and similar studies can be used to better understand the loading behavior and surface control capability of roof screen in underground mines. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The large majority of ground-fall injuries are caused by falls of smaller rocks from the immediate roof. Various controls are currently being used in mines to control this surface rock, including the use of wire roof screen. In mines where wire roof screen has been installed, injuries from rock falls have been reduced dramatically (Robertson and Hinshaw, 2001). Roof screen has the potential to prevent hundreds of injuries caused by the fall of small rocks between permanent roof supports (Compton et al., 2007). Because of this potential for reducing ground-fall injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is evaluating the performance characteristics of welded-wire screen as used in underground coal mines by conducting a laboratory testing program in the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) in NIOSH’s Bruceton Research Center Laboratory in Pittsburgh, PA. Previous tests to evaluate the performance characteristics of various types of screen have been conducted by the University of Alberta (Tannant, 2001). In this study, the load-displacement properties of welded-wire, chain-link, and expanded-metal mesh were measured by performing full-scale pull tests. A flat steel plate was pulled through a screen test sample that was bolted to a special test frame while the pulling force and mesh displacement were measured. These tests established the general load-displacement behavior of the screen. Peak load capacities and stiffness were determined for each screen type, showing how welded-wire mesh has a much stiffer initial loading response, whereas chain-link and expanded-metal mesh have large displacement capabilities and exhibit significant post-peak ductility.

The Mogalakwena Platinum Mine in the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex is Anglo American PlatinumÆs only open cast operation exploiting the Platreef. The Platreef, which extends along the basal contact of the Bushveld Complex, is geologically and mineralogically a much more complex orebody than the Merensky and UG-2 reefs. Changes in the footwall and the genesis of the Platreef translate into a number of rock types being present. These rock types vary in hardness and recovery potential and present challenges to metallurgical staff trying to optimise the concentrator. A true understanding of the implications of treating these rock types is required if the maximum value from this orebody is to be obtained.In order to more accurately forecast production and incorporate ore variation in the mine plan and comminution and flotation circuits, a geometallurgical approach to managing the operation has been used and is being further developed.CITATION:Schouwstra, R, De Vaux, D, Muzondo, T and Prins, C, 2013. The Luossavaara "Research Mine" is the First large, offensive effort in mining research conducted by the Swedish state. Over a 5-year period, 1981-1985, the Swedish Mining Research Foundation works in the "Research Mine" on the development of mining systems and equipment. The purpose is to bolster the competitive strength of the Swedish mining and mining equipment industry. The previosly abandoned Luossavaara mine in Kiruna, in northern Sweden, has been reopened especially For the project. Ore is mined and sold during the course of the research project. The income from the sales covers a large portion of the costs for teh research.

"Without the use of a flux, only a poor dispersion of ceramic phase can be achieved. A molten-flux-assisted ceramic phase dispersion technique for producing aluminium alloy metalmatrix composites has been developed. In this paper, we report the physical chemistry for the dispersion of TiB2 in molten aluminium. In particular, aspects of the interfacial energy and the thermodynamics of the dispersion reactions are briefly discussed for enhancing the volume of dispersion phase in the molten metal and for controlling their morphology. This investigation also addresses the role of molten flux in the fabrication of AI-alloy mmc using a casting technique. The morphological aspects of the dispersion are explained on the basis of the classical theory· of nucleation.IntroductionMetal matrix composites (MMCs), have long been recognised as an important class of material due to their greater wear resistance, specific stiffness and temperature capability when compared to conventional monolithic alloys. Particulate reinforced composites produced by melt casting techniques have been amongst the first MMCs to achieve commercial market viability. The advent of melt mixing techniques such as the Duralcan™ process have enabled low cost, easily fabricated composites based on the AI-SiC and AIAlz0 3 systems to be produced. In this process, uncoated ceramic particles with diameters 10ltm and larger, are incorporated into conventional monolithic alloys with reinforcement levels up to 25 volume percent. The AI-7Si-SiC metal-matrix composites have good wear resistance, high strength, low density and high thermal conductivity. The combination of these physical and mechanical properties has become a major attraction for the fabrication of light-alloy composite disc rotor brakes for the automotive sector2. However, in silicon-free alloys, SiC is thermodynamically unstable above the composite melting point and is extensively attacked by the melt to form aluminium carbide3 :"

The Thompson smelter has three unique features which form the basis ~f its design: fluid bed roasters which treat nickel concentrate filter cake from the mill, as well as the flux, in order to achieve partial desulphurization; the use of electric furnaces for the smelting of the partially desulphurized, preheated roaster product; and the disposal of slag by water granulation and slag slurry pumping. The installation consists of three fluid bed roasters, each feeding an electric furnace. Nickel concentrate is received at the smelter via pipe line. It is thickened and filtered, and the filter cake, together with siliceous flux, is fed through rotary bin feeders and reciprocating double-gate seals into the fluid bed roasters. Air injected into the roasters through club-head tuyeres oxidizes part of the sulphur and associated iron in the concentrate. The heat of reaction dries and heats the charge. Roaster product is recovered from the gas stream in cyclones and from the roaster bed through automatic valves.

Cliffs Natural Resources Pty Ltd (CNR) operates iron ore mines in the Koolyanobbing region of Western Australia. Ore is mined from three locations, separated by many kilometres. The ore is stockpiled at these locations, according to an in-house ore classification system (based on grade and source) and then trucked to the crushing and screening plant at Koolyanobbing. Lump and fines products are railed to Esperance for ship loading and export to Asian customers. CNR prides itself on the relatively low inter-shipment grade variability of the products. The Koolyanobbing crusher is fed using a daily blend plan, generated to maintain lump and fines product grades within acceptable tolerance ranges around targets. Achieving low variability requires predicting lump and fines grades as accurately as practical from the estimated head grades of the ROM ores potentially going into the blend. The grade prediction model may be either a direct prediction of crushed lump and fines grades and lump percentage, or be split into two stages: the bias between blasthole estimated head grade and crusher head grade and then the lump-fines algorithm for splitting the head grade between lump and fines products. The lump-fines algorithm comprises the percentage of lump and the difference between the lump and fines grades. We describe a weighted least squares (WLS) regression model for predicting crusher grades and lump proportion from the estimated head grade for Fe, P, SiO2, Al2O3, Mn and S. The method is applied to CNR production data, where the regression model explains approximately 60 per cent of the variance in the crushed ore grade, for both lump and fines. A further small but significant improvement in prediction can be achieved by including the ore classification data in the model. The regression errors exhibit strong positive serial correlation, indicating trends in grade error across multiple blend records. To compensate for the longer-term error, an exponentially smoothed model was developed and applied to the daily grade blend errors. This gave an increase in the longer-term variance explained and therefore an improvement in grade prediction.

"Under high stress conditions, rock bursts, borehole breakouts, and spalling events are common phenomena that occur around underground openings. In general, together these three phenomena represent brittle failures of an intact rock mass; however, individually they reflect different failure modes under high stresses. After analyzing and comparing the stress-to-strength criteria for rock bursts, borehole breakouts, and spalling events, proposed by previous researchers, it is found that these brittle failure phenomena share common stress-to-strength prerequisite. The stress-to-strength preconditions for brittle failures can be defined by the ratio of the maximum tangential stress around an underground opening to the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) (s?max/sci) or by the ratio of the maximum far-field principal stress to the UCS (s1/sci). Both these indicators can be used to reflect the same stress preconditions. For s?max/sci, a ratio of 0.4±0.1 represents the critical stress requirement for brittle fracture. However, for s1/sci, a ratio of 0.15±0.05 should be considered as the critical stress requirement. Numerous engineering case studies and analysis of rock mechanics based on the Hoek-Brown criterion also verify these two stress-to-strength preconditions. Here, these two indicators are presented with an error range because complex rock mass quality ratings, lithology, and geotechnical conditions have profound impacts on the stress-to-strength preconditions for brittle failures. INTRODUCTIONHigh stresses are one of the most important factors that must be considered when undertaking underground rock mass projects (Kaiser et al., 1998). Wang et al. (2009) reviewed current progress in the evaluation of high stresses and their corresponding criteria. However, after clarifying the definition of high stress, civil engineers need to understand the deformation and failure behaviors of rock mass around an opening under high stresses. Under high stress conditions, the deformation of rock masses around an opening can be categorized into two groups, i.e., severe brittle failures (or rock bursts) and compressional plastic deformation of the surrounding rock mass, as indicated in Figure 1."

Location The Meggen Mine and the concentrator plant of the "Sachtleben Bergbau G.m.b.H." are located in the southern part of the Ruhr-district of the Federal Republic of Germany. The mine has been in operation for more than 100 years, but the concentrator described in this paper was built in 1962 and started up in January 1963. Goelogy and Mining The Meggen ore-body is of sedimentary origin and occurs in a zone of limestones, graywacke and shales of Devonion age. The average thickness of the deposit is 3 meters and, due to an intense folding of the area, the mineralized zone dips very steeply at 800 toward the north. The ore consists of 85 percent of sulfides and 15 percent gangue that mainly contains silicates from the host rocks. The principal ore minerals are pyrite (67 percent), sphalerite (16 percent) and galena (2 percent) with minor amounts of marcasite and only traces of chalcopyrite. As shown in Fig. 1, the sphalerite and galena are very finely disseminated in the massive pyrite of the Meggen ore, and a very fine grinding combined with a special flotation technique are required to liberate the valuable sulfides and to produce separate concentrates of lead, zinc and pyrite. Mining is performed by the sub-level stoping method and employs trackless equipment. Present operations provide ore from the 600 meter level. Annual ore production is 870,000 metric tons.

"The Niagara Tunnel Project (NTP) is a 10.1 km long water-diversion tunnel in Niagara Falls, Ontario, which was excavated by a 14.4 m diameter tunnel boring machine. The excavated rock types included limestone, sandstone, siltstone, shale and mudstone. Based on observations and measurements the overbreak was divided into four zones. Approximately half the tunnel length was excavated through the Queenston Formation, which locally is a shale to mudstone. Three of the four overbreak zones were within the Queenston. Zone 1 includes the formations above the Queenston Formation, Zones 2 and 4 are border regimes with little or no influence from St. Davids Buried Gorge and Zone 3 is the area influenced by the gorge. Zones 2 through 4 can be generally summarized as having overbreak as the result of stress induced spalling. Zone 2 marks the transition from slabbing at the Whirlpool contact in the stress shadow to spalling towards Zone 3. The behaviour of Zone 3 is interrupted from the typical high stress behaviour due to the presence of St. Davids Buried Gorge. As the tunnel passed from the gorge the high regional stresses induce spalling, which creates the typical notch shaped overbreak geometry of Zone 4.Three modelling approaches were used to back analyze the brittle failure process at the NTP: damage initiation and spalling limit, laminated anisotropy modelling, and ubiquitous joint approaches. Analyses were conducted for three tunnel chainages: 3+000, 3+250, and 3+500 m because the overbreak depth increased from 2 to 4 m. All approaches produced similar overbreak geometries to those measured. The laminated anisotropy modelling approach was able to produce overbreak depths and chord closures closest to those measured, using a joint normal to shear stiffness ratio between 1 and 2. The back analysis results were able to produce sets of stress and strength inputs for different sections of the tunnel at the transition from overbreak Zone 3 to 4. The back analysis procedure demonstrates the importance of including the anisotropic stiffness in the numerical modelling approach to correctly capture the overbreak geometry and deformations around underground excavations."

The process under investigation is the large-scale production of phosphorus. Gravity delivers the feed, consisting of pelletised apatite, coke and silica (in the form of gravel), to a submerged arc furnace through ten, evenly distributed feed chutes ensuring constant packed bed volume. Within this packed bed, solid-gas reactions are dominant in generating the gaseous product. These reactions, as well as the packed bed itself, were the main focus in the development of a fully three-dimensional CFD model in which fluid flow and energy distribution are represented as functions of chemical reactions, heating and melting of material and heat losses. The associated complex process interactions necessitated the creation of two process-specific, user-developed models that integrates accurate, thermodynamical data with computational fluid dynamics calculations, as well as reaction kinetics. The boundary conditions are provided by industrial measurements, and the key model parameters of reaction kinetics were obtained by laboratory experiments for different feed mixtures. Thirteen temperature probes installed inside the refractory lining of the furnace especially for this project allowed parameter fitting and validation to be guided within the constraints of real measurements. Simulation results reveal a thin, dome-shaped, reductive zone where conditions are optimum for maximum phosphorus recovery, as well as evidence of a thermal reserve zone similar to an ironmaking blast furnace located above this reduction zone. When compared to actual operating data, the CFD model can successfully predict the specific power consumption, the phosphorus in the slag and gaseous product flowrate under given operating conditions. This CFD model forms part of a larger project that aims to create a Dynamic-CFD hybrid control model.

In 1970, the Government of Saskatchewan instituted a program aimed at resolving the dilemma of excess productive capacity over the market demand which existed for potash produced in Saskatchewan. The two primary elements of the program were prorationing of potash production to market demand and a minimum selling price. The paper reviews the factors, both local and international in nature that led to the introduction of the program. The licensing mechanics and the operation of the program, along with the changes that have been introduced in two and one-half years of operation, are discussed. Attention is given to the results of the controls as they affect the industry and the province. Also discussed is the outlook for Saskatchewan potash in world markets.

At a time when water resource planning is proceeding on a continental scale, such as the proposed $100 billion North American Water and Power Alliance, which would redistribute water among three nations, including seven provinces of Canada, 35 of the United States, and three States of Mexico, the selection of a single river basin for study may seem to require an apologia. None is offered because of ( 1) the magnitude of the Indus , itself a part of the great Indo-Gangetic Plain drainage system, with Himalayan sources, upon which the thickly populated northern sub-continent of Indo-Pakistan depends for agriculture and hydroelectic power; (2) the extraordinary problems created by dismemberment of the world?s largest irrigation system through legal beheading of the Eastern Waters under the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960; and (3) the herculean effort to contain the twin encroachments of waterlogging and salinization in a basin which faces a shortage of fresh water. The British irrigation system of barrages and canals on the Indus was a venture admirable in conception. Unfortunately, it is now a legacy burdened with unwanted consequences, due to interference with the hydrological regimen, particularly the rise of water table occasioned by leakage.

The operations management system at Olympic Dam has evolved over a two-year period to the state described in this paper. This evolution has been driven largely by the requirements of the recent expansion of the Olympic Dam operation from three to nine million tonnes of ore per year. Such a change process demands an holistic approach to mine management and several techniques have been employed including XPAC, Mine Works Planner as well as a basic philosophy of æjust-in-timeÆ completion. The philosophies, software and tracking mechanisms for managing a large tonnage operation are described, outlining a fully integrated scheduling system from shift to shift detailed activity planning to a 20 year production plan. Moreover, the vision of production exceeding the current limit of nine million tonnes means that there are to be further developments to this state-of-the-art system in use at the Olympic Dam mine.

Proper understanding and management of production drilling in sublevel cave (SLC) mines is essential for meeting production targets and for avoiding inefficiencies that could lead to costly bottlenecks. In many SLC mine management models drilling is considered a derivative activity of firing and bogging. Its scheduling is considered to be implied in a firing schedule and given an arbitrary target completion, ‘several weeks’ or ‘a month’, ahead of production firing. Like development, drilling activities are most efficient when conducted separately from other production activities. Unlike development, however, it is not apparent during planning and feasibility how far in advance of firing drilling activities ought to be conducted. This paper presents a method of defining a minimum threshold of drilled stocks above which drilling, firing and bogging operations occur most efficiently. As an example, the drilling activities, procedures, and maintenance at Glencore Xstrata’s Ernest Henry Mine are presented, and the larger scale consequences of improvements to these areas are presented to illustrate their importance in the operation of an SLC mine.CITATION:Beal, C, 2014. This paper investigated the loss of cyanide via oxidation in CIP or CIL processes by relating the cyanide oxidation to its major oxidation product, cyanate. The results showed that the oxidation of both free cyanide and copper cyanide complexes are substantially enhanced by the presence of carbon. The rate of cyanide oxidation was found to occur in the order: Cu(CN)32- > CN- > Cu(CN)2-. The cyanide oxidation rate in the presence of copper and carbon increased significantly with increasing dissolved oxygen concentration, typical of CIL vs. CIP conditions. Cyanide oxidation rate of iron, zinc or nickel cyanide complexes was minimal.

"The kinetics of leaching of a saprolitic ore from Indonesia by citric acid solution under atmospheric pressure was investigated. An examination of the effects of leaching temperature, citric acid concentration, pulp density and ore particle size on the dissolution rate of nickel found that they all had significant influence on the rate. The highest nickel recovery (95.6 percent) was achieved under the leaching conditions of ore particle size of 212-355 microns, citric acid concentration of 1 M, leaching time of 15 days, pulp density of 20 weight/volume percent, leaching temperature of 40°C and shaker speed of 200 rpm. The shrinking core model was found to be appropriate for describing the leaching kinetics of this ore in citric acid solutions at atmospheric pressure. The experimental data were well interpreted by this model with rate of reaction controlled by diffusion through the solid product layer. Using the Arrhenius expression, the apparent activation energy for nickel dissolution was evaluated as 12.38 kJ/mol. Finally, on the basis of the shrinking core model, a proposed empirical kinetic model for the leaching of nickel from this Indonesian saprolitic ore was expressed as a mathematical model, which was verified as consistent with the observed experimental results.IntroductionIndonesia has some of the world’s largest nickel laterite reserves and was the largest producer of nickel – in the form of nickel lateritic ores – in the world in 2013 (Merchant Research and Consulting Ltd, 2014). However, only high-grade saprolites are processed in Indonesia using pyrometallurgical methods to produce ferronickel and nickel matte. Lower-grade saprolites and limonites are removed, becoming waste or overburden in mining site areas. Hydrometallurgical methods, involving either chemical leaching or bioleaching, are now seen as the most important technologies for treating nickel laterites in the future because of their advantage of not only extracting nickel and iron but also other valuable elements. In addition, hydrometallurgical methods consume less energy and have lower capital and operational costs. Although they are recognized to be more suited to limonites, some researchers have studied their use in the extraction of nickel and other metals from saprolites (Guo et al., 2009; Lu et al., 2013). Hydrometallurgical processes for the extraction of metals, especially nickel, promise to be meaningful alternatives to pyrometallurgical processes to primarily treat low-grade saprolites for which pyrometallurgical processing is not favorable"

"Generally, the concentration of bauxite flotation tailings is around 10%, a large amount of water in tailings needed to be recycled in the flotation process. Sedimentation and dewatering properties of tailings were investigated under different conditions. Surface high negative charges on mineral particles are the key factor to destroy the settlement of tailings when the pulp pH is around 8.9. Hence, the modification of pulp pH around 7 is necessary to the diminution of the repulsive force between mineral particles and then the acceleration of sedimentation of tailings. Anionic polyacrylamine with molecular weight of 14 million is the best flocculant for the settlement of tailings in all tested polyacrylamines. P-toluene sulfonic acid shows better properties than hydrochloric acid for pulp pH adjustment when anionic polyacrylamine with molecular weight of 14 million is used as flocculant. Although the flotation of diaspore is depressed in the presence of polyacrylamine using sodium oleate as collector, but the recycling water traded by the combination of ployacrylamine and p-touenesulfonic acid does not show the depression effects on the flotation of bauxite ore. The lower residual content of polyacrylamine in recycling water treated by the combination of ployacrylamine and p-touene sulfonic acid plays an important role. INTRODUCTION Generally, the waste water generated from mineral processing plant is usually treated by sedimentation, oxidization, electrodialysis, ions exchange, active carbon adsorption and flotation technology, and the treated water is also used again in the industrial process. Flotation was adopted widely to improve the quality of bauxite from low grade diasporic bauxite in China. For flotation, the grinding fineness of bauxite is over 90% -0.074 mm, sodium carbonate and sodium hexametaphosphate were used as regulators, so the tailings pulp is very difficult to settle and be dewatered (Y. Wang et al., 2004; Y. H. Wang et al., 2007; Wang Yu-hua et al., 2008; Wang Yuhua et al., 2011). The water recycling of bauxite tailings are becoming the highlight for the industrial application of the flotation process for bauxite ore. "Advanced numerical models can be used to evaluate entry support systems in coal mines. However, these methods require specialized software and specialized skills to create the models and evaluate the results. Practicing support design engineers require a method to rapidly assess a proposed support system for a given geotechnical scenario. A prediction equation that can be used to assess roof support systems has been developed from the results of hundreds of FLAC3D analyses that were conducted during recent research. These models were validated against field cases and empirical design approaches and were found to adequately predict entry stability in coal mines. The understanding developed from the model outcomes was used to develop an equation to predict entry roof stability against large roof falls. Least-squares error analysis was conducted to find appropriate parameters for the nonlinear equation. The developed equation can be solved using spreadsheet software, allowing for rapid assessment of alternative support system performance in variable geological conditions. The performance of the prediction equation is evaluated against empirical design methods and against selected case histories of support practices at currently operating mines. Examples are presented that demonstrate the performance of the equation in variable geological settings. The stability factor (SF) prediction equation can be used as an assessment tool to assist in the design of coal mine roof support systems.IntroductionGround falls represent a significant proportion of injuries and fatalities in underground coal mines in the US. During 2013, ground falls were responsible for 4 of the 14 fatalities and 16.6 % of the 1,577 reportable lost-time injuries (MSHA, 2015). In addition, each year about 400 to 500 large roof falls are reported that can extend up to or above the bolted horizon. Large roof falls and associated ground fall hazards can be mitigated through improved support design.The research presented here particularly addresses the problem of large roof falls that extend more than 90 cm (3 ft) above the roof line of an entry and may extend above the bolted horizon. Smaller roof falls that fall out between supports or extend less than 90 cm (3 ft) above the roof line are excluded. These smaller roof falls can be controlled by appropriate surface support such as roof screen or other skin control methods. Also excluded are roof falls that are associated with an individual geological structure such as a slip of fault. Structure-related instabilities can be controlled by strategically locating individual roof bolts or other supports appropriate for the local situation."
