Os aços inoxidáveis superduplex (AISD) aliam boas propriedades mecânicas e resistência à corrosão, possuindo um vasto campo de aplicação na indústria petroquímica. Geralmente, os reparos dos equipamentos são realizados por soldagem, sendo importante a seleção de parâmetros. É de suma importância a obtenção do teor adequado de ferrita no metal de solda, sendo que a variação da energia de soldagem pode influenciar de forma direta a microestrutura e resistência à corrosão. Logo, este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar os efeitos provenientes da variação de parâmetros de soldagem nas características do AISD UNS S32750. Foi avaliado o balanço de fases, relacionando esse efeito com a resistência à corrosão. Foram realizadas soldagens em chapas pelo processo TIG autógeno em 3 níveis de energia de soldagem (5, 10 e 18 kJ/cm), variando a corrente e velocidade de soldagem, de modo a obter 5 condições e a possibilidade de analisar as variáveis-resposta com essas variações isoladamente. A análise da microestrutura foi realizada por microscopia ótica e o teor de ferrita foi quantificado pela utilização de duas técnicas: ferritoscópio e quantificação por imagem. Foram realizados ensaios de temperatura crítica de pite para análise de resistência à corrosão. Concluiu-se então que o acréscimo de energia pela variação da velocidade de soldagem acarretou no aumento no teor de ferrita, ocasionando a redução da temperatura crítica de pite, sendo estes observados na fase ferrítica.

Quando processos de engenharia de superfícies multifuncionais que combinam fases de propósito orientadas são aplicados a substratos moles, uma combinação de alta resistência ao desgaste, suporte de alta carga e baixos coeficientes de atrito podem ser obtidos. Neste estudo, os efeitos de diferentes camadas nitretadas no comportamento tribológico de revestimento Diamond-Like-Carbon (DLC) depositado sobre aço SAE 1040 são investigados. A nitretação foi conduzida sob diferentes temperaturas e misturas de gases para criar três camadas de nitretos distintas: duas camadas de compostos com predominância de fases e e ?’ e uma camada de difusão. Todas as superfícies foram então revestidas com DLC, depositado via Plasma-Enhanced-Chemical-Vapour-Deposition (PACVD). As fases de nitreto foram analisadas utilizando difração de raios-X e a topografia da superfície foi analisada por interferometria de luz branca e microscopia eletrônica de varredura. O comportamento tribológico foi investigado utilizando esfera e plano com movimento alternado com carregamento incremental até a falha do filme DLC. Os testes tribológicos indicaram que o melhor desempenho foi alcançado por uma específica combinação de dureza, rugosidade superficial e tipo de nitreto. A melhor capacidade de mancalização entre o revestimento DLC e o substrato mole foi alcançada quando a camada de nitretos constitui-se apenas de uma camada de difusão.

Enmarcamos este documento en la presentación del programa Moquegua Emerge, cuyo éxito se viene dando de la mano con éxito de las instituciones involucradas, tanto públicas, privadas y organizaciones sociales. Mostraremos con ejemplos, el diseño y puesta en marcha de la metodología propuesta y el camino que se está siguiendo para asegurar la sostenibilidad del impacto a largo plazo. Las conclusiones del mismo nos llevan a repensar la forma en la que se viene diseñando y ejecutando diversos programas sociales, de forma un tanto aislada o sin llegar a generar la sostenibilidad que tanto se espera.

El presente trabajo técnico describe y analiza el proyecto para la implementación de la tecnología de explosivos denominada emulsión bombeable aplicado en el carguío mecanizado de tajos de producción SLS con perforaciones ascendentes y descendentes realizado en mina Cerro Lindo. Este proyecto tiene la finalidad de mejorar los KPIs (Key Performance Indicator) que actualmente maneja la operación. Por ello, el área técnica del sitio ha elaborado un protocolo de implementación, para efectuar la introducción y validación de la propuesta de valor de esta nueva tecnología.

South Africa has one of the largest Cr-related industries in the world and generates large amounts of Cr-containing smelter dusts. It is normal practice to scrub Cr from the furnace off-gas in water, and to recover the Cr by adsorption, followed by recycling of the loaded adsorbent into the furnace. A study was conducted to find a low-cost adsorbent that is capable of removing sufficient Cr from the solutions generated by scrubbing. The test work focused on the evaluation of different clay minerals (attapulgite, bentonite, and kaolinite) as adsorbents for Cr. Cr(VI) could only be adsorbed after prereduction with e.g. ascorbic acid (ASA). An 80% removal of Cr(VI) could be achieved from a solution containing 20 mg/L Cr using bentonite clay after reduction with ASA. Attapulgite and kaolinite adsorbed less than 55% Cr after reduction with ASA. Both ASA and ferrous salts were found to be suitable reducing agents. The use of acid mine drainage (AMD) was also investigated as a low-cost alternative reducing agent, as AMD usually contains iron. The Cr(VI) reduction potential of the AMD was determined by redox titration against a solution containing 50 mg/L Cr(VI). Studies show that AMD can potentially be used as a reducing agent in a Cr removal process if it is available on site.

The necessity to evaluate undocumented foundation lengths is essential in assessing the useable life, need for scour protection, retrofitting, or full reuse of existing bridge foundations. For this purpose, Parallel Seismic Testing (PST) has the best accuracy and is applicable to the widest range of foundation configurations used in bridge construction of any test method. Although not limited to bridges, PST case studies are presented involving two bridges. To preface the case study discussions, an overview of the PST method is given along with its results and analysis thereof. In one of the cases, we were afforded the rare opportunity to see the existing piles being extracted long after the PST testing program was completed. The resulting Class A prediction reaffirms the accuracy of the method. Versatility of the PST method is also exemplified in the two cases presented, where unique situations from complex foundation systems were overcome by analysis to provide successful results.

For certain applications, coarse titanium nitride (TiN) precipitates can be deleterious for the final properties of the material. Hence, in order to better understand the mechanisms involved in the generation of these precipitates, a thorough characterization of the particles observed in steels with different titanium and nitrogen content was carried out. Samples from liquid steel (tundish), continuous casting billets and final product were evaluated using an Automatic Particle Analyzer (APA) coupled to a Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM). The location, frequency, size distribution and composition of the different particles observed were assessed. While only few TiN precipitates were observed in liquid steel samples, the density of this type of particle significantly increased in the continuous casting billets samples. Particles ranging from 1 to 10 µm were mainly found in the interdendritic zones of the as-cast structure. The density of TiN particles observed in these samples did not change after re-heating and rolling operations. A model to predict TiN precipitation during solidification was developed. A reasonable agreement was found between model results and measured data. Results of this analysis confirmed that the precipitated fraction of TiN increases as the product of steel Ti and N contents rises.

Dois assuntos que vêm sendo cada vez mais discutido na indústria são revisão crítica de projetos e a capacitação da equipe de operação para otimização do processo. Além dos benefícios financeiros diretos que se obtêm na redução do tempo de partida, as melhorias, quando identificadas em fases anteriores do projeto, produzem resultados positivos durante outras fases do ciclo de vida da planta. Neste sentido, o sistema de controle e a capacitação dos operadores desempenham um papel fundamental. O presente trabalho apresenta uma estratégia efetiva de se validar as lógicas de controle de uma planta por meio do simulador dinâmico de processos de alta fidelidade IDEAS, e a utilização desta ferramenta no treinamento operacional via OTS (Operator Training Simulator). Neste trabalho, é realizada uma breve revisão sobre a metodologia utilizada para a construção da arquitetura de automação que permitiu a validação das lógicas de controle e o desenvolvimento do sistema de treinamento. Especificamente, são apresentados resultados obtidos com a simulação em projetos de beneficiamento mineral, por meio da quantificação dos ganhos em operação, manutenção e segurança. Como exemplo de resultados, mais de 2000 pontos de melhoria foram encontrados em projetos executados, e mais de 14 cenários de operação foram criados para treinamento. Os ganhos observados corroboram a robustez da ferramenta utilizada e o potencial da metodologia empregada.

Aquellos que lo hacen a menudo usan hojas de cálculo que consumen mucho tiempo para compilar y son propensas a errores humanos. Además, es evidente que la actividad minera y la producción de metales, tal como se lleva a cabo en la actualidad, generan emisiones de carbono significativas. Esto pone de manifiesto la necesidad urgente de abordar este problema y adoptar medidas efectivas para reducir la huella de carbono de la industria minera.

A unique feature of the program is the close interaction of the students in all three universities and a significant involvement of industry professionals. Now in its sixth year, it is clear that this unit is achieving its objectives

Reaction kinetics of metallurgical physical chemistry which was successfully applied in metallurgy (as ferrous metallurgy, non-ferrous metallurgy) became an important theoretical foundation for subject system of traditional metallurgy. Not only the research methods were very perfect, but also the independent structures and systems of it had been formed. One of the important tasks of metallurgical reaction engineering was the simulation of metallurgical process. And then, the mechanism of reaction process and the conversion time points of different control links should be obtained accurately. Therefore, the research methods and results of reaction kinetics in metallurgical physical chemistry were not very suitable for metallurgical reaction engineering. In order to provide the definite conditions of transmission, reaction kinetics parameters and the conversion time points of different control links for solving the transmission and reaction equations in metallurgical reaction engineering, a new method for researching kinetics mechanisms in metallurgical reaction engineering was proposed ,which was named stepwise attempt method. Then the comparison of results between the two methods and the further development of stepwise attempt method were discussed in this paper. As a new research method for reaction kinetics in metallurgical reaction engineering, stepwise attempt method could not only satisfy the development of metallurgical reaction engineering, but also provide necessary guarantees for establishing its independent subject system.

The quality control of a two-stage coal washing process involves several complex components that need to be modelled accurately, to enable autonomous control of the process. The first objective is to develop a method to track the material through the washing process, while ensuring accurate washing prediction models are used. This was achieved through a digital twin model of the Grootegeluk 1 coal processing plant. The model is the amalgamation of manipulating and combining of data-sets from the plant historian, geological wash tables, and mining dispatch servers. This information is then used to control and set the processing medium densities of all 15 modules on the plant, 10 modules in the primary wash and 5 modules in the secondary wash. This controller has been successfully implemented and controlled the plant for 10 days.

A conceptual scoping study was conducted to investigate pre-concentration options for upgrading ore from an Ag-Pb-Zn deposit. The low grade of the ore would result in only modest economic returns, given current market conditions. Several pre-concentration options were considered. These included: selective mining, crushing and pre-screening (following either standard or high intensity selective blasting), bulk ore sorting, particle sorting, jigging, dense medium separation, or combinations of these approaches. Flowsheets were developed for each option, and the upgrade performance was modelled using Limn to determine mass balances and stream tables. Due to the limited availability of test work data, the models were based not only on what test data was available but also on case study data found in the literature. The Bazin technique was used to derive assay by size data for different streams following crushing. Equipment lists and preliminary layouts were established based on the stream tables, and capital and operating costs were estimated for each flowsheet. This information was used to carry out a preliminary economic evaluation using net present value and sensitivity analysis. In this case, the most economically attractive process was found to be particle sorting; although further benefits may be realised by combining with bulk sorting. The traditional route utilised for the recovery of Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs) in South Africa involves the concentration of ore by flotation, followed by smelting to produce a PGM rich matte, which is then digested hydrometallurgically to solubilise base metals and Platinum Group Elements (PGE). HCl/Cl2 is conventionally used for PGE dissolution from concentrated material, which is an aggressive reagent associated with high maintenance costs as well as environmental concerns. Of interest is the leaching of PGMs directly from mineral ores, low grade concentrates and tailings in a cyanide-ferricyanide system as a more sustainable alternative. This system has shown favourable Pt recoveries among the Pt minerals, but with sperrylite (PtAs2) displaying highly refractory behaviour. The dissolution of sperrylite is investigated in a cyanide-ferricyanide system in the context of an electrochemical study involving OCP, chrono-amperometry and cyclic voltammetry. This approach allows the assessment of leaching characteristics as well as the investigation of surface passivation, which is believed to contribute to poor Pt recoveries. Irgiredmet has substantial experience on RIP and RIL technology for gold recovery, having started development of ion exchange technology in 1964. Irgiredmet specialists were involved in the majority of RIL and RIP projects in the former Soviet Union and Russia, and took part in commissioning of practically all plants using ion exchange technology. Laboratory and pilot plant tests were conducted to develop process design criteria for designing 15 RIP plants of the former USSR using bifunctional macroporous anionite AM-2B or its analogs. This paper is devoted to the laboratory, pilot plant testing and introduction of RIP technology conducted in cooperation with GC Pertopavlovsk. Medium base resin PuroLite S992 (PuroGold) was used as adsorbent. Some adsorption regularities and the affinity of resin to metal cyanide complexes were studied. Laboratory batch and continuous pilot tests on resin-in-pulp process were held for oxidised ores from Pioneer, Albyn and Malomyr mines (Amur region, Russia) owned by the Petropavlovsk company. A simplified flowsheet for gold elution and resin regeneration was developed. Alkaline cyanide solution was used as gold eluent and gold was recovered from eluates by electrowinning. Process design criteria were developed on the basis of the testwork results, and the plants were designed and constructed by GC Petropavlovsk. The RIP plant at Pioneer was commissioned in May 2008, at Malomyr in August 2010, and at Albyn deposit in December 2011. These plants are currently in operation at design performance at throughputs from 3 to 6.5 Mt/year. The primary gold ores of Pioneer and Malomyr deposits are refractory to cyanidation; Irgiredmet also completed continuous testwork on RIP technology using medium-base resin for pressure oxidation (POX) residues derived from their flotation concentrates. In 2019 a hydrometallurgical plant for the treatment of refractory gold concentrate after POX was commissioned at Pokrovsky mine (Amur region). Since 1952, Bond’s equation has been used as a standard to predict the specific energy of grinding for a given duty. The Bond’s equation considers that the exponent is constant for all conditions. Hukki, in 1961, pointed out that the exponent is a function of the particle size, and concluded that the Bond’s equation applies successfully for an intermediate range of sizes; out of this range the Bond’s equation leads to high error as demonstrated in this paper. More recently, in 2004, S. Morrell presented a new formula in which the exponents vary with the feed and product size. This paper is based on Hukki’s approach and presents a new general formula, in which the exponent varies only with the feed particle size. This new equation has been proven in 82 observable cases in Peru and other countries around the world, involving ball mills and vertimills in different configurations over a wide range of feed and product sizes, work indices and mill diameters; in most cases, the predicted value has an error less than 10% with regards to the observed value and no need for any correction factor. Currently lead nitrate is used as the recommended activator in Au-Sb flotation. However, due to high levels of hazard, the application of lead nitrate constitutes a potential risk for human health and ecosystems. To mitigate the harmful impact of activators on the environment, further research on activation by alternative reagents has been launched to promote the efficiency of antimony ores. In the present study, adsorption of lead, copper and zinc cations has been investigated by nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR), which has revealed copper and zinc cations penetration into the mineral lattice, although lead cations remain adsorbed on the mineral surface. However, the combination of zinc and copper cations leads to preferential volumetric adsorption of zinc in the mineral lattice and further surface adsorption of copper which positively affects the activation process. It has been established that activation of stibnite can be achieved effectively with the mixture of Cu2+:Zn2+=1:1 as much as with lead cations in antimony ore flotation. As a part of this work, the computational modelling has been used in prognosis of reagent activity evaluation (PRAE) for stibnite and aurostibite flotation by sulfhydryl collectors. The lower PRAE value the stronger the ability of a collector to form a stable complex with a mineral. PRAE has shown a strong negative trend to complex formation on the mineral surface of aurostibite and stibnite. Based on these studies, several collectors have been proposed for effective flotation. To verify the feasibility of proposed collectors tetramethyl (ethyl) thiuram disulfides (TMTD and TETD) have been used for flotation of stibnite, sphalerite, pyrite and arsenopyrite. Flotation performance has been improved significantly with TMTD that allows the avoidance of lead nitrate application and increases the recovery of antimony by 8,16%. A indústria da mineração do ferro brasileira ocupa posição relevante no cenário mundial, exportando para os principais mercados consumidores os produtos beneficiados. Esta indústria de beneficiamento tem consumo elevado de recursos e de energia, o que consequentemente gera grandes quantidades de emissões gasosas, líquidas e sólidas, contaminantes do meio ambiente. Nesse contexto o presente artigo tem por objetivo avaliar o ciclo de vida da produção de pelotas de minério de ferro, através da identificação dos impactos ambientais gerados nas etapas de lavra, beneficiamento, transporte e pelotização, com o intuito de dar subsídios a medidas mitigadoras. Foi realizado um estudo de caso em uma empresa de produção de pelotas de minério de ferro e utilizando a metodologia de Avaliação do Ciclo de Vida, baseado na norma ISO 14040. De acordo com os resultados obtidos os impactos ambientais mais importantes em relação ao ciclo de vida da produção de pelota, são referentes à categoria de depleção dos recursos minerais com 64,4% do total ponderado e a emissão de particulados no processo de lavra, que monta a 28,6% do mesmo total. Enquanto a fase com maior contribuição para o impacto total para a produção da pelota é a de beneficiamento.

An alternative cooling curve analysis method focused on the experimental determination of the latent heat of phase changes and phase transformation kinetics is proposed in this work. The method analyses the cooling process of a metallic sample, initially liquid that is contained into a cylindrical metallic mold, both of known weight, thermally isolated at its top and bottom. The method is based on an energy balance associated with the experimental measurement of the temperature change of the sample and the mold during their cooling process. From the numerical processing of the cooling curves, are obtained approximate values of the acting global heat transfer coefficient as a function of temperature in order to describe quantitatively the energy exchange of the metal/mold system with its surroundings. These relationships and other experimental data are used to process the cooling curve of the sample and the mold during solidification, in order to obtain the latent heat of solidification.The method was applied experimentally to zinc and tin of commercial purity, initially liquids and contained into stainless steel molds in order to determine its ability to measure the latent heat of solidification. The obtained results suggests that this method shows a good potential to characterize the solidification of metals.
