The ash contents in coal particles were examined in the paper dependably on particle size and its density. So, the two-dimensional regressive function Z=Z(?, D) was the searched object, where Z is random variable describing ash contents, ? - density and D ? particle diameter. This dependence is determined basing on experimental data concerning the coal of type 31. For this coal, the method of ordinary kriging is applied to calculate the values of a random variable Z. This method requires the proper selection of so-called variogram function, which 4 forms are considered in this paper in purpose to select the best solution. The given results were then evaluated by the residual deviation value and so compared with empirical data.

"A pressure oxidation plant to pretreat refractory sulphide ore at the Goldstrike plant in Nevada, was commissioned in early February 1990. The plant, with a nominal capacity of 1363 t/d, was commissioned over a one-week period and achieved design capacity and availability within ten weeks an unusually short period for a plant of this complexity.The pressure oxidation process is conducted under elevated temperature and pressure conditions, and in a corrosive environment. These conditions demand that the process and engineering design of the plant be carried out in a much more sophisticated and detailed manner than is normally required in a conventional gold plant.This paper provides an account of the process and engineering design of the Goldstrike pressure oxidation plant with special emphasis on the design of the vessels, slurry pumps, piping, valves, and control systems.BackgroundLocationThe Goldstrike property is located in Eureka County in northcentral Nevada on the Carlin geological trend. The mine is approximately 40 km northwest of the town of Carlin which is situated on Interstate Highway 80. The minesite is located 1700 m above sea level in the Tuscarora Mountains.Initial Goldstrike OperationsShallow, low-grade mineralization was discovered by diamond drilling in the Goldstrike area in the 1960s. A heap leach operation was established in the mid-I970s by the previous owners. The Post deposit was discovered in 1982. Gold production by mining and heap leaching reached I t/a (40 000 oz/a). American Barrick purchased the property in 1987 and started an aggressive program of deep drilling. This led to the discovery of the Betze and Deep Post deposits and established sufficient reserves to justify an initial 4100 t/d mill and a 5 500 000 t/a heap leach operation"

A novel chromate [Cr(VI)] reducing bacterium was isolated from chromite ore processing residue disposal site of China and identified as a Leucobacter sp. by 16S rRNA gene sequence homology. The minimum inhibitory concentration of strain CRB1 was 820 mg l-1 of Cr(VI). The reduction of Cr(VI) occurred only under aerobic conditions. With an initial concentration of 2.5×108 cells ml-1, 1800 mg l-1 of Cr(VI) was reduced entirely within 38 h under the optimum conditions, at 30 °C and pH 9.0. Increasing Cr(VI) concentrations prolonged reduction process and higher cell densities meant quicker reduction. A blue precipitate was produced during chromate reduction of strain CRB1, which was binding to the surface of bacterial cells and determined as trivalent chromium with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrometry. The conspicuous chromate reduction ability of Leucobacter sp. CRB1 suggested a potential for bioremediation of Cr(VI) containing wastes.

Coal mining activity is inextricably connected to waste production. These include coal slurries deposited in environment. Current knowledge in the field of mining and especially mineral processing allows extracting valuable fuel from deposit coal slurries. The article discusses of previous works devoted to coal slurries inventory in Jankowice Mine in Poland (Upper Silesia) and quality assessment of coal slurries. 12 samples of coal slurries deposited in waste pond of Jankowice Mine was taken for the investigation. Refractory castables based on alumina-silicate aggregates are commonly used in casting wheel components and launders. In this research the recycling process of waste magnesia chrome bricks for production of refractory castable lining for launders and casting wheel ladles at Iranian Sarcheshmeh copper complex (I.S.C.C.) is discussed. The smelting plant of ISCC consumes 4,000 tons refractory materials and produces 2,000 tons waste refractories annually. In order to reduce the environmental pollutions and gain the economical advantages, the recycling of waste refractories proved to be a solution [1]. In ISCC, 800 tons alumina or alumina-silicate refractory castables are used for linings of anode furnace ladles and launders annually [2]. In the present work, the spent bricks from reverberatory, converter and anode furnaces were analyzed in term of microstructural changes from hot zone to the cold end to evaluate the changes in texture and chemical composition. Different formulations based on recycled magnesia chrome aggregates and various particle size distribution and cement content were tested. Economic recycled magnesia chrome refractory mixture was prepared after crushing and sizing the non-deteriorated regions of wasted bricks. After evaluation of physical and mechanical properties of samples, one ton of refractory castable was prepared and successfully installed in the casting wheel ladles.

A semi-automatic device has been constructed that can be used to check the solution strength of cyanide solutions. It consists of a wheel on which a gold-foil-bearing glass slide is mounted. The wheel moves the gold foil through the solution under test and intercepts a light beam. As the gold foil is attacked by the cyanide solution its light absorption diminishes. The successive in-crease in transmitted light intensity is recorded and gives a measure of the gold dissolution rate. Curves have been obtained to show the effect of cyanide concentration and oxygen content on dissolution rates. Owing mainly to the use of ethylene dibromide in the production of tetraethyl lead for gasoline treatment, there has been a tremendous increase during the past decade in the demand for bromine. In the United States, production, derived mainly as a by-product from the treatment of brines from salt wells, rose steadily from about two million pounds in 1924 to nine million pounds in 1931. In 1936, production amounted to between 20 and 21 million pounds. Much of the increase during the past four or five years has been due to the operation of the Ethyl-Dow Chemical Company's plant, which extracts bromine directly from sea water. The process employed by the Ethyl-Dow Company is somewhat similar to that in use on salt-well brines at their plant at Midland, Michigan, but whereas these brines contain around 1,300 parts per million bromine, sea water contains only 65 to 70 p.p.m.-about as much as the waste effluent in the brine process. By intensive research, however, a process was developed whereby a very considerable percentage of the bromine content of sea water could be recovered, and at a satisfactory operating cost. In its essentials, the process consists in liberating the bromine from the sea water by treat-ment with chlorine, blowing the bromine out of the water by a current of air, and finally absorbing it in a solution of soda-ash.

[The legislation in many States against the present method of producing carbon-black by the incomplete combustion of natural gas, and the continually increasing demand for gas for otter purposes, indicates that the supply of carbon-black may Gradually be decreased and that new methods for its production, utilizing a greater parentage of the carbon in the has should be developed. In the course of investigations of the effects on hydrocarbons of high voltage discharges, it was noted that under certain conditions natural gas could be decomposed and that carbon-black could be produced. The effects of several tyres of electrical discharges on natural gas have, accordingly, been studied' in order to find out the fundamental factors underlying the reactions and their possible influence in the recovery of a greater part of the carbon content of natural gas than is now possible. Present commercial plants using natural gas for the manufacture of carbon-black recover from 0.9 to 1.5 pounds of carbon-black per thousand cubic feet of gala consumed, or less than 5 per cent of the total Gabon in the gas: It should be noted, however, that the, present methods involve heating the gas to incandescense by burning it as a luminous flame, and a considerable part of the gas is thus consumed as a source of hest. If this heat can be supplied from some other source, or if a more efficient method of applying the energy con. tamed in part of the gas, to the decomposition of the rest of it, can be worked out, then a greater yield of carbon-black per thousand cubic feet of gas care be expected. "INTRODUCTIONNSCC International Ltd. carried out the enabling works and constructed the foundation system for the Emirates Pearl Tower and Bab El Qasr Hotel in Abu Dhabi. Emirates Pearl Tower is a joint venture project of TDIC- Tourism Development and Investment Company and ATLAS group, a leading telecommunication company in the UAE. Bab El Qasr Hotel is a project of EMROC Emirate-Moroccan General Trading & Investment Company. The combined enabling project is executed under the combined management of JACOBS International Holdings Inc. and NASSAR Engineering Services.The project is located to the south-east of Emirates Palace and west of Etihad towers, at about 20m away from the sea shore. Since the two projects are located next to each other a combined shoring system was constructed for the entire area. This decision was based on an agreement with clients and consultants of the two projects and resulted in significant savings for both parties. The shoring system consisted mainly of diaphragm wall with ground anchors and steel struts. Cantilever secant piles were used on the eastern side of the plot, adjacent to Etihad Towers` basement.PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF WORKNSCC International Ltd. was responsible for the design, procurement and construction of strutted and anchored diaphragm walls and cantilever secant piles. "Devices and flowsheets for recovering fine placer gold are reviewed. Inefficiencies of gravity processing techniques are documented and discussed. Prospects of combining gravity and froth flotation techniques are presented. Possibilities of using other separation techniques, such as magnetic and electrostatic devices are also discussed.IntroductionSeveral new methods for beneficiating different types of placer ores have been developed in the last two decades. Improved efficiencies in the recovery of fine particles have been achieved by improving gravity flowsheets and machines as well as by developing multiple treatment techniques involving flotation, magnetic and electrostatic separations. Placer gold processing, however, has been an exception to some extent. Gravity concentration using riffled sluices accompanied by mercury amalgamation is still the main method in use today. Because of this, the recoveries of fine gold and the other associated values are often similar to those achieved several decades ago. For example, very few sluice systems recover significant placer gold finer than 100µm in size.Only a few proposals for using alternatives to simple gravity methods for recovering fine placer gold can be found in the published literature. The fixed, low gold price discouraged research in this field for many years. Development of more efficient processes has not kept pace with the recent rapid escalation in the price of gold. Froth flotation for saving fine placer gold might now prove economic, for example. This paper reviews literature published on the recovery of fine placer gold over the period 1907 to 1980. Suggestions for improving the performance in this field, based on the authors' current testwork, are also presented."

"Microseismic systems at five mines in the Sudbury Basin provide the basic data for Falconbridge Limited's rockburst research. Daily and long-term analysis of this data as well as underground observations has confirmed the fault-slip mechanism of rock bursting at three mines. A detailed analysis of the complete history of Falconbridge Mine is being conducted and Distinct Element numerical models are being used to simulate both the stick-slip behaviour of faults and the dynamic effects of the induced vibrations on rock and backfill. University research includes acoustic tomographic imaging of the rock mass based on seismic wave propagation and collection of full micro seismic waveforms to allow application of advanced seismic and statistical analysis techniques. INTRODUCTIONFalconbridge Limited currently has five mines operating in the Sudbury Basin: East, Lockerby, Onaping, Fraser, and Strathcona Mines, which along with the Falconbridge open pit produced 2.8 million tonnes of ore in 1986. The underground mines range from about 600 m to 2000 m below surface and one of the consequences of mining at these depths is the occurrence of rockbursts.Research into rockburst phenomena at Falconbridge began over 25 years ago and research is continuing in an effort to avoid the problem by improved mine design, to protect mine openings from damage by design of effective support systems and to better understand the processes which precede a major fault slip rockburst. Since the early 1980s, significant progress has been made due principally to micro seismic monitoring and advances in microcomputer technology coupled with detailed underground investigations.It is now possible to identify the fault-slip mechanism as the cause of many of the rockbursts which occur at Falconbridge mines. By gaining an understanding of effect of mining-induced stresses on the pre-existing geological structures, areas which may experience rock bursting can be identified and can be protected against severe damage by appropriate support techniques."

The key goals for mine site rehabilitation require mine managers to demonstrate that rehabilitation is safe, stable, self-sustainable and non-polluting. Within this context, it is reasonable for stakeholders to expect that mine site rehabilitation is resilient to disturbance impacts such as fire and drought. However, mine managers actively avoid fire on rehabilitation; and as a result have limited understanding of fire behaviour on revegetated landforms, the long term implications for site stability and the potential risk to site relinquishment. An experimental fire that was conducted at the Curragh Mine site in May 2015, burnt 117 ha of 19- to 21-year old mine site rehabilitation, mimicking wildfire conditions and creating a mosaic of fire impacts across the landform. Using a combination of ground surveys and remote sensing assessments, we demonstrate that over a two year period, ecological metrics such as species richness, woody density and understorey biomass all recover to pre-fire levels for both grassland and open woodland areas. This is supported by WorldView-3 satellite imagery and the remote sensing assessment using the differenced Normalised Differenced Vegetation Index (dNDVI) which shows high regrowth within the burn area in 12- and 24-month image captures. The results suggest that within the recorded conditions, this site is resilient to fire impacts, and has the capacity to recover to pre-fire levels within the first two years following the fire.CITATION:McKenna, P, Erskine, P D, Phinn, S, Glenn, V and Doley, D, 2018. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory-scale beneficiation tests on a sample of corundum gneiss from Montana to devise a method for beneficiating corundum for use as a substitute for refractory-grade bauxite. A flotation process utilizing petroleum sulfonate as the collector in an acid circuit was devised. Results showed that two flotation schemes each produced a concentrate exceeding the national stockpile specifications for calcined bauxite. From a feed containing 28 pct corundum concentrates containing up to 92.5 pct alumina (A1203) were produced with a corundum recovery of 78.5 pct.

IN THE first report1 disks of steel of known composition and history were exposed, under carefully prescribed conditions, to impacts of explosion products resulting from the explosion of 50-gm. charges of explosives having well-determined rates of detonation, or to impacts of a weight of known mass, falling through measured distances. There were available at the Bureau of Mines Experiment Station five explosives, having rates of detonation of 5716, 4470, 3190, 2296, and 1523 meters per second. It being desired to continue this exposure downward, and no explosives with a lesser rate of detonation being at hand, resort was had to the impact of a falling weight, the differences in the velocity of impact being attained by varying the height from which the weight was allowed to fall. It was expected by this means to demonstrate experimentally that the development of Neumann bands was determined by the suddenness of the deformation of the metal in which they were produced. But while progressive deformations were obtained with the explosive arges, the falling-weight method failed because the tup was ogressively deformed, also the disks were so flattened as to be unfit for metallographic examination. A return, therefore, has been made to the use of explosives as the source of energy, an air-gap being interposed between the charge of explosive and the disk, as the effect diminishes as the function of the distance between the charge and the object on which the products of its explosion, or the shock wave from its detonation, impinge. The details of the arrangement of the tests by the air-gap method were the same as those described by Foley and Howell,2 except that after the system had been set up and the desired apparent specific gravity for the explosive

Since the discovery of high temperature superconductors has led to extensive interest and conjecture regarding their potential to change contemporary technology, discussions of the impact on the metallurgical and other industries have naturally arisen. In this paper we present data showing the possible impact of these developments on the materials related to the fabrication and proliferation of devices based on superconductor materials. We observe that the largest volume of effort with LTSC will be for the demonstration of high power devices while applied research relating to processing will remain the principal HTSC activity. We also note that in the next decade copper consumption in the US is expected to remain essentially at the current level while the need for Nb and Sn,; two major components of LTSC, will grow at a faster rate both in the US and the world. Although the use of superconductor-based magnetic separation is anticipated to increase, no major impact of these components on the metallurgical industries is expected.

"Fire Refined Copper (EI Teniente Three Stars) has been produced at Caletones Smelter of Codelco Chile since almost the beginning of its operations.Due to changing features of the copper market, together with the targets on technical efficiency and productivity, it has become more and more relevant for copper industry to reach both, good final product quality and a proper environmental control.At present, copper refining process at Caletones Smelter takes place in two cylindrical tilting furnaces, where solid fluxes are injected through horizontal tuyeres into the molten bath. (Fig. N2 1)Solid reagents are pneumatically conveyed and injected into the liquid copper bath attaining excellent solid - liquid contact, so the impurities removal efficiencies are found to be high. Same injection tuyeres are used to introduce both oxidising agent (normal air) and reducing agent (reformed gas) into the molten bath. Air or nitrogen is used as conveying gas for solid reagents, depending on the process stage.This pap~r gives a fundamental description of the process and industrial results related to the injection of blend of sodium and calcium carbonates to remove arsenic and antimony, silica and granulated reverberatory slag to remove lead and a mixture of calcium carbonate and mineral coal to reduce the selenium content of the fire refined copper."
