The rapid increase in the mmber of automobiles during the last 25 years has resulted in the insistent and growing demand for better roads of more permanent construction. Some form of State license for the operation of automobiles has been in effect almost from the time of the first "self-propelled" vehicle, and some part of the revenue derived from the sale of these licenses has been applied to the maintenance and construction of roads. However, to obtain funds with which to build their present highway systems, the individual States have resorted to the taxation of gasoline. The first State to adopt a gasoline tax was Oregon, the law becoming effective February 25, 1919. By 1928, all of the States except two had levied taxes on gasoline at rates varying from 2 to 5 cents per gallon. New York and Massachusetts passed gasoline tax laws which became effective in 1929. Regulations governing the quality and the methods of handling gasoline and other petroleum products sold in the States have also been adopted by 29 States; many of these laws antedate the adoption of a gasoline tax. The variations in motor fuel speci- fications and methods of test have been pronounced in the several States. The Bureau of Mines, in making certain technical studies of the rasolines marketed throughout the United States, the results of which are reported in its semiannual motor gasoline surveys and other reports, has had occasion to obtain and compile all of the present (April 1, 1931) tax and pection laws of the several States which relate to motor fuel and other petroleum products. To facilitate the use of this material and to obviate the need in most cases of reading the complete text of the laws as published by the States, the pertinent information was arranged in tabular form for cly reference. 3 Although digests of States gasoline tax laws' are available and copies of the complete laws can be obtained from the State agancies in charge of the enforcement of gasoline tax and inspection laws, it is believed that

Deep hardrock mines worldwide increasingly face rockbursts as mining depths increase. These events result from the accumulation and sudden release of stress, causing rockmass damage and posing major safety and operational challenges. This paper focuses on destress blasting as a critical strategy to mitigate rockburst hazards. Although limited practical experience exists in Swedish deep hardrock mines, international case studies demonstrate that, when well implemented, destress blasting redistributes peak stresses by promoting controlled fracturing around mining excavations. The success of such techniques is highly dependent on site-specific factors such as stress regime, rockmass brittleness, structural geology, and blast layout. Although destress blasting is especially effective in massive, brittle rock under high stress, typical conditions for strainburst prone environments, its design cannot rely solely on numerical models. Simulations can offer preliminary evaluation of stress redistribution trends and guide early design assessments but their current limitations, including sensitivity to input data and simplified fracture mechanics, mean they are best used as supplementary tools rather than final decision-makers. Field trials, supported by microseismic analysis and fracture mapping, remain essential for validation. The study critically synthesises international experiences and presents a structured framework for destress blasting design, offering practical and academic perspectives aligned with Swedish geological conditions to support safer and more efficient application in deep hardrock mines.

About 24 per cent of our total production of bituminous coal is used in industrial power plants. As regards fuel conservation, therefore, the recovery of unburned fuel from furnace refuse presents interesting possibilities. Considerable attention has been given to this problem in the past, but because of the comparatively low initial cost of power plant fuel in the pre-war period little progress, has been made in this direction in the United States. Because of the higher price of coal in Europe more attention has there been given to the problem. In Germany a process has been developed for separating unburned coal in refuse by using an electromagnetic separator In the United States the use of mechanical stokers enabled low-priced screenings of high ash content to be used, so that even with relatively high percentages of combustible material remaining in the refuse, the loss in money is not excessive. If the price of screenings returns to the pre-war level around $1.00 per ton the process proposed here will probably not be especially interesting, except where the freight charges are very high. However, if the price of delivered coal continues high, such a process should result in considerable saving. The cost of continuous operation of such a refuse treating plant should not exceed 75 cents per ton of fuel recovered.

It has been recognized that froth flotation of mineral particles utilizing rising flow of micro size air bubbles, counter-current to quiescent falling flow of particles in a column type cell, provides a unique mechanical atmosphere conducive to extension of froth flotation process to much coarser and finer particles sizes than possible with mechanically agitated and aerated cells. 1,2,3,4. This paper describes metallurgical results obtained at several plant installations of large capacity commercial size Deister FLOTAIRE® Column Flotation Cells. These cells utilize air aspiration into surface tension lowered water to generate micro size bubbles. Operating costs, power, wear, and scaling characteristics of rougher, cleaner, and scavenger units are compared with mechanical units. Problems encountered and scale up criteria developed when increasing from 0.20m(8inch) diameter pilot cells to 2.42m(96inch) commercial cells are discussed.

Así, inicialmente se desarrolló el sistema de cortes concéntricos y bloques. Posteriormente en 1983 y 1984 el método fue adaptado por Thomas. Loose, quien desarrolló el sistema de informática y probó los modelos matemáticos de costo por nivel. Finalmente entre los años 1985 y 1986, el método se aplicó en la evaluación y optimización del método Cuajone donde se consideró los ángulos de talud de la mina, ingresos por uno o varios metales que se explotan, los egresos generados por las operaciones involucradas en la explotación, la ley de corte y la inclusión de parámetros operacionales en la mina.

In this study, a combined pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical technique has been designed and used to recover rare earth mixture elements (REE) and cobalt from a NdFeB magnetic waste. while addressing the cost of reagent and process facility. This process can be adjusted to different magnetic wastes regardless of their compositions. Prior to the leaching, the magnet scrap was pretreated by two rounds of roasting (750°C in air) and a mechanical grinding in between, to convert iron metal to ferric oxide. Subsequent leaching was performed using optimized conditions (pH, temperature and retention time) where the extraction ratio of REE to Fe III is the highest. After removing iron content from the leachate (pH ≈ 3), REE was precipitated selectively and purified further. The produced REE concentrate reaches 99% purity with 85% recovery in a single run. The cobalt oxide was isolated from the PLS as a by-product with 99.8% purity.

The thermodynamic of nickel production from laterite ore and from sulfide concentrate can be analyzed using PO2 - PS2 diagram of the Ni-Fe-S-0-SiO2 system. The procedure of the diagram computation is suggested and the diagrams for various temperature and Fe/Ni ratio are calculated. Three-suffix Margules equations are used for the calculation of the thermodynamic properties of three solutions: liquid matte, liquid slag and solid Fe-Ni alloy. The diagrams are used for the considerations about direct one-stage metallic nickel production.

As the dust begins to settle and mining companies begin to take stock of the battle, Newmont Mining Corp. will be one that is standing strong with just a few scrapes and bruises thanks in large part to the leadership of president and chief executive officer Gary Goldberg and his right hand man and chief operating officer, Chris Robison.As he closes in on retirement (for a second time) Robison, a third-generation miner from Nevada, took time to speak with Mining Engineering about a 33-year career in which, among other things, he is credited with not just helping Newmont survive the turbulent times but with steering the company to a safer, more productive and more profitable heading.“I think we did it better than anyone else,” Robison said when asked how the company fared during the past five years. “We didn’t talk about it a lot, we just put together a strategy and we delivered.”What Newmont, the world’s second-largest gold mining company by production, delivered since Robison took the position of chief operating officer in 2013 are improvements in costs, porduction, projects and safety.Operating under the mantra of “live within your means,” Robison was pulled out of retirement from Rio Tinto and into a challenging situation at Newmont. The price of gold was in a nose dive from a high of nearly $58/g ($1,800/oz) and heading to levels closer to $38.60/g ($1,200 oz).“Newmont is a big ship that can’t be turned, but has to be steered,” said Robison. “We recognized that we had to set a new course. The direction the ship was going was great for $1,600 to $1,800/oz gold but we were chasing ounces.”Like the rest of the gold mining sector before the falling gold prices, Newmont was focused on volume and was looking for gold wherever it could be found. The slogan at Newmont in 2011 was “7 million ounces a year by 2017.”When Robison came on board it was a different reality.“We had to begin focusing on value over volume as the cornerstone of Newmont going forward,” he said."

With the continuing demand for industrialisation and urbanisation, the rate of mining and processing lower grade ores will also increase, producing large quantities of waste. As extreme weather events associated with global climatic changes are to be expected, the risk from mine tailings management will also increase (Edraki et al., 2014). In sulfide rich tailings, weathering within the critical zone controls the fate and distribution of the contaminants such as copper, zinc, and lead in the environment (Hayes et al., 2014). Tailings evolve geochemically and physically with time as they age under the influence of complex interacting factors. Understanding of the complex interactions between these controlling factors is important for predicting and mitigating the potential risks associated with sulfide tailings such as generation of acid mine drainage (Lindsay et al., 2015). Wetting and drying initiates weathering processes, influencing the hydrological, geochemical and geomechanical properties of the tailings. In semi-arid climates where evaporation exceeds precipitation, salts may precipitate within the pore system as well as on the tailings surface. These salts become the temporal sink of heavy metals until the next episodic rainfall (Nordstrom, 2011, Grover et al., 2016). Therefore, using kinetic and static test to describe the trajectory of these material evolutions without considering the complex interactions could potentially lead to erroneous prediction. Canada, with one of the largest continental shelf areas in the world, has done little to evaluate its offshore unconsolidated mineral resources which include heavy minerals (gold, chromite, rutile etc.) and industrial minerals (silica sand and aggregates). During glaciation much of the continental shelf was covered with an ice sheet and later subaerially exposed with the result that glacial, glaciomarine and fluvial processes deposited sediments that may contain heavy minerals derived from onland locations. With rising sea-levels, beach and nearshore processes may have served to concentrate heavy minerals by winnowing and removing the lighter mineral components. These potentially valuable resources can be found with suitable exploration techniques such as seismic profiling and bottom sampling. Gold deposits are known to exist off the coast of Nova Scotia, and on the basis of form er beach mining, gold deposits probably occur off Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands. Large deposits of silica sand occur near the Madeleine Islands and it appears likely that supplies of marine aggregates are present close to urban markets or sites of future mega-projects such as oil field developments. This paper, which is based upon a review of literature and consultation with members of the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources' Coordinating Committee on Ocean Mining (DCOM), is the first step in assessing the Canadian offshore f or its resource potential with respect to quantified deposits, known and speculative mineral occurrences. Although this is a subjective evaluation, the potential appears promising. A more detailed resource inventory is required to provide a more certain assessment.

"Processing of the tailings accumulated over the lifetime of Madneuli Copper Concentrator is an opportunity to extract additional salable copper and gold products. This paper presents a pre-concentration process for the valuable components (copper and gold) of the accumulated tailings. The developed process makes it possible to obtain a copper pyrite concentrate with a yield of 14.05%, copper grade of 1.36%, and recovery of 83.22% containing 3.78 g/ton of gold at a recovery of 84.31%. The bulk concentrate is produced by a combined process bringing together selective flotation to produce salable copper concentrate and hydrometallurgical processing of the selective flotation tailings to recover gold. KEYWORDS: FLOTATION, ALBION PROCESS, LEACHING, COPPER CONCENTRATE, SELECTION Madneuli Copper Concentrator, Georgia, was put into operation in 1975. Over its lifetime, 40 mn tons of tailings have been accumulated at the tailings storage facility (TSF). Sampling of the TSF has indicated that the average copper and gold grade is 0.23% and 0.56-0.65 g/ton, respectively. Accordingly, the TSF can be classified as a technogenic reserve. This paper discusses pre-concentration of valuable components using flotation, followed by processing of the bulk concentrate in the Albion process. Mineralogical analysis of the accumulated tailings showed that the main ore mineral is pyrite (11.71%). Copper minerals are mainly represented by chalcopyrite (0.7%). The main nonmetallic mineral is quartz (67.3%); sericite, chlorites, etc. also occur. Pyrite is present both as liberated grains and intergrowth. The absolute majority of copper minerals are found as intergrowth with pyrite, less often with quartz. Ore minerals are slightly oxidized. Chemical analysis results are shown in Table 1. Particle size distribution shows that the size class -0.2 mm - 0.045 mm has the highest grade of 0.85 to 0.97 g/ton of gold. Size class +1.25 mm has the lowest grade. Based on the chemical and mineralogical studies and particle size distribution, an optimized process was developed for pre-concentration of the valuable components prior to hydrometallurgical processing. Several gravitation, direct selective, bulk, and bulk selective flotation processes were trialed. (1,2)"

"These proceedings consist of papers presented at a Bureau of Mines Technology Transfer Seminar on postdisaster survival and rescue research. Several seminars are held each year to bring the latest results of Bureau research to the attention of the mining industry as quickly as possible.INTRODUCTIONThe postdisaster research program is directed toward research and development of technology and equipment that increases the chances of a miner surviving or being rescued after an underground mine disaster. A disaster is an accident of major proportions, and it may result in the entrapment of miners whose normal egress from the mine is cut off. This often necessitates a rescue operation and a means of keeping the trapped miners alive while they await rescue. The Bureau is currently pursuing research to develop the technology that will enhance the ability of miners to survive such an occurrence. The research is divided into two basic problem areas, survival and rescue. Both areas are concerned with the inability of miners and rescue teams to cope with the postaisaster environment, such as toxic gases, unstable roof conditions, water flooding, and lack of oxygen. In addition, research is also conducted to find ways of locating and quickly reaching trapped miners. Most of the research conducted by the Bureau has been directed toward the postdisaster problems associated with coal mines. However, most of the research results are also applicable to noncoal mines as well.The papers presented in these proceedings address some of the recent research conducted by the Bureau of Mines that has been directed toward the postdisaster problems outlined above. The topics covered range from an overview of the technology developed for oxygen selfrescuers to training programs for mine rescue. Any questions or comments pertaining to this research are encouraged and appreciated. Excellent gold recovery was demonstrated in a laboratory-scale leaching test on waste material from an open-pit mine in northeastern Nevada. An injection system of leaching was applied in which the sodium cyanide solution was introduced into the interior of the dump at selected points. Dissolution of gold from the waste material, which assayed 0.06 ounce gold per ton, was readily achieved because the gold occurred as submicroscopic particles in a porous host rock. Gold recovery of 80 percent was obtained in 11 days from material crushed to 1 inch in size, and recovery was 90 percent after 21 days.

The over-all slope angle of between 55 and 60 degrees at the Adams Mine necessitates control blasting on the final pit walls. The control blasting techniques used are pre-shearing and buffer blasting. Pre-shearing with 2'I2-inch holes on 5-foot centers is used in areas where jointing and rock type are not conducive to smooth stable walls. Buffer blasting with 12'/4-inch holes is used in areas where the rock is competent. Control blasting adds to the operating costs, but can result in substantial savings in increased slope angle and reduced stripping.

There are well recognized procedures for determining the various tensile, fatigue, and other mechanical properties of the common structural materials. This makes it possible for engineers to design structures of various materials which have adequate initial strength to stand the stresses to which they are subjected in service. There is also considerable general information about protective measures suitable for protecting the usual structural materials from the effects of ordinary environments. However, often insufficient quantitative information is available on the combined effects of stress and corrosion to permit the designer satisfactorily to appraise the structure from the stress-corrosion standpoint. This situation is further complicated by the fact that the stresses causing stress¬corrosion failures are usually not the design stresses but rather the residual forming and assembly stresses which are generally of unknown magnitudes. Thus, tests which will rapidly evaluate the susceptibility of materials to stress-cor¬rosion failures are extremely useful. Of particular value are tests which can be applied to built-up structures as well as to simple specimens, since, as mentioned above, residual stresses often are caused by fabricating procedures and assembly operations. Enthalpy-entropy diagrams are presented for natural gases of 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, and 1.0 gravity over the pressure range of 5 to 10,000 Ib. per sq. in. and temperature range of 32º to 700°F. The charts indicate directly the work requirement and temperature rise for adiabatic compression or temperature change for free emansion of natural eases. Computation and Uses of Charts The Mollier diagram (Fig. 4), in which the enthalpy (heat content) is plotted against the entropy with lines of constant temperature, pressure,, and in some cases volume, has been found most convenient when dealing with the compression, expansion, and flow of fluids. In dealing with the flow of fluids, the sum of the increase in the enthalpy, AH, plus the increase in kinetic energy, AM —, plus the increase in potential energy, ?MZ, representing the total increase in energy of the fluid in flow, is equal to the sum of the heat q, and work added, —w, to the fluid while flowing between the entrance and exit of the flow system. AH + AM— + ?MZ = q-w [1] In cases where there is no significant change in potential energy or in kinetic energy (velocity), it follows that the increase in enthalpy is equal to the total energy supplied to the fluid. Under such conditions' the changes in the property of the fluid as it flows through a throttling valve, choke, or any other similar arrangement, may be read directly from the enthalpy-entropy diagram by following a horizolltal line between the known pressures' When compressing Or expanding a gas by means of a Or or engine in which no heat is added to or subtracted from the gas, but only work done, the changes in the properties of the gas may be determined along a vertical line of constant entropy between the entering and exit pressures. The power required for the compression of the gas may be readily determined by converting the increase in enthalpy into the desired units. The enthalpy-entropy diagram for natural gases is to the gas engineer what the steam diagram is to the steam-power engineer. For this reason it would be extremely convenient if a reasonably satisfactory enthalpy-entropy diagram could be prepared as a function of the gravity of the gas. A careful study of the known properties of natural gas indicate that this is possible. The effect of temperature upon the enthalpy at constant pressure is expressed as the "heat capacity" or "specific heat" of the gas. The best available data for natural and petroleum refinery gases indicates the relationship shown in Fig. I. From this it is clear that the specific heat of natural gases is a function only of the gas gravity and the temperature at atmospheric pressure. The objective of this research was, to evaluate the hazard of heavy metals in the soil around the National Iranian Lead & Zinc (NILZ) Company. In this study, 38 samples of soil around the NILZ factory were collected using standard sampling method, so that, the heavy metals Pb, Zn, Cd and Cr have been evaluated. The concentration of heavy metals were measured and compared with standard limits. The results show that the hazard of heavy metals in soil is not so serious and the content of Pb in just 5 percent of samples, and the content of Zn in just 3 percent of samples were above standard limits and the concentration of Cd and Cr were under the standard limits. Average, variance and standard deviation of the elements are calculated and with due attention to the standard deviation, Pb and Zn are seen to be more distributed than Cd and Cr. Also the isograde curve of heavy metals was drawn using software called Surfer. These curves showed that the heavy metals are concentrated at particular distances from the factory.
