In gold exploration and metallurgical testing, the role of the mineralogist is to assist in solving problems with regard to (a) sampling, (b) gold occurrences, and (c) petrologic classifications of host rocks. The presence of "coarse" gold as a sampling problem can be overcome by various methods, including "screen fire assays," screened analyses and special gravity techniques which may be used to determine distributions of "coarse" versus fine gold. Determinations of mineralogic associations of gold usually require special separation techniques, accompanied by fire-AA-mineralogic assays of the products. After accurate mineralogic analyses are obtained for various products, quantitative distributions of refractory gold associations can be calculated by the use of simultaneous equations. Petrologic classifications are required by the geologist for mapping and interpretation of the various rocks. After the petrology and mineralogic differences of the rock units are determined, x-ray diffraction analyses of analytical pulps can be used for lithologic logging of drill cores. XRD logging is an efficient method for correlating lithologic units and alteration trends throughout a gold prospect.

"Background The preponderance of Canada's coal resources is located in areas remote from high demand domestic users and at some significant distances from deepsea ports. This places great demands on the transportation system and has forced the coal and the transportation industries to adopt highly efficient methods of handling the product and hauling it to market position. Most of the coal not consumed in minemouth thermal power stations is carried by rail over lines operated by the two transcontinental railway systems, Canadian National and Canadian Pacific. These rail networks are extensive and have the advantage (as compared to most other North American railways) of being able to handle coal movements from origin through to destination without interchange to other rail carriers. Coal SourcesWith exception of the coal produced in Cape Breton, Nova iScotia, all the significant shipping volumes in Canada emanate ifrom mines located in the three most westerly provinces. Figure I ishows the geographic distribution of the major mining operaitions shipping coal to domestic and export markets. The prinicipal routes and the tonnages carried (1980 calendar year) are ialso indicated. iThe 1980 shipping data are summarized in Table I. Saskatchewan lignite began moving from Bienfait to Thunder Bay by CP Rail unit trains in mid-1981 at the rate of one million tonnes per year. The product is handled through Thunder Bay Terminals and delivered directly to a nearby Ontario Hydro electrical generating station."

"La connaissance des contraintes naturelles qui prévalent dans les massifs rocheux est un prérequis indispensable pour la conception sécuritaire et économique des excavations comme on en retrouve dans les exploitations minières souterraines. Certains chercheurs se sont attardés à colliger les résultats de mesures de ces contraintes et les ont utilisés pour produire des modèles de prédiction basés sur leur traitement statistique. Ces modèles de prédiction sont très populaires auprès des exploitants miniers puisqu’ils permettent, du moins dans les étapes préliminaires de design, d’obtenir de façon s’apéconomique mais approximative, une partie des paramètres dont ils ont besoin. Dans le cadre d’un projet initié en 1994 avec la collaboration de l’IRSST, il a été décidé de produire un modèle de prédiction englobant une partie de la zone périphérique de la faille de Cadillac, soit une zone plus restreinte que le Bouclier Canadien utilisé jusqu’ici comme région pour l’élaboration de tels modèles. Pour produire ce modèle de nouvelles données obtenues avec une technique permettant d’exercer un excellent contrôle de qualité ont été ajoutées à celles déjà disponibles. Une telle régionalisation des données de base permet d’obtenir un modèle où les intensités et les orientations des contraintes principales sont beaucoup moins dispersées que ce que rapportent les modèles publiés jusqu’à ce jour. Enfin, il est démontré que le modèle proposé pour la région étudiée est en toute probabilité plus sécuritaire que les modèles plus généraux publiés à ce jour. Knowledge of the in situ state of stress existing in a rock mass is essential to the safe and economical design of underground mining excavations. Prediction models have been published, based on the statistical treatment of stress measurement results. Such prediction models are very popular among mine operators because they allow them, at least at a preliminary design stage, to economically obtain part of the information needed, even if this information is approximative. In 1994, a research project financed by IRSST was initiated aiming to produce a prediction model that would comprise a peripheral zone around the Cadillac fault. This region is more confined than the Canadian Shield on which the existing prediction models have been based up to now. In order to produce such a model, existing stress measurement results have been used in conjunction with new stress measurements that have been performed based on a technique which allows full control of the quality of the measurements. Restricting the data upon which the model is based to a more specific region gives a model in which the intensities and the orientations of principal stresses are far less scattered than the results published to date. Finally, it is shown that the proposed model is probably safer for the studied region than the models previously published."

Using an automated drill test fooure, the U.S. Bureau of Mines measured the sound power levels produced by a small, pneumatic, rotary roof drill. A series of tests was conducted to determine (1) the relative effectiveness of several drill muffling schemes and (2) the relationship between drill sound power and pneumatic power supplied to the drill. The influence of rotation rate (i.e., airflow) and feed thrust on the penetration rate of the drill was also noted.

"Due to the use of outdated mining technology or room and pillar mining process in small coal mines, the coal recovery ratio is only 10% - 25%. In many regions of China: the damage area caused by the small coal mines amounted to nearly one hundred square kilometers. Therefore, special mining techniques must be taken to reclaim the wasted resource in disturbed coal areas. This paper focuses on the different mining methods by analyzing the longwall panel layout and abandoned gateroad (AG) distribution in in the abandoned area of Cui Jiazhai Coal Mine in northwestern China. On the basis of three-dimensional geological model, FLAC- 3D numerical simulation was employed. The abutment pressure distribution was simulated when the panel face passed through the disturbed areas. The proper angle of the inclined face was analyzed when the panel face passed through the abandoned gateroads. The results show that the head end of the face should be 13-20m ahead of the tail end. The pillars on both sides of abandoned gateroads had not been damaged at the same time, and no large-area stress concentration occurred above the main roof. Therefore, the coal reserves of disturbed areas can be successfully recovered by using underground longwall mining. INTRODUCTIONDuring the 70-90's, there were a lot of small coal mines in China. Due to their disordered mining, most of the small coal mines left a great many abandoned gateroads (defined as AG in this paper) and a large area of damage coal seam. In these type of coalfields, there exist many mining risk issues, including nonuniform stress in the overburden, flooding and hazardous gases accumulated in the gob. So how to lay out a longwall panel and successfully mining under this type of abandoned small mines is a big issue nowadays in China.As mentioned above, longwall panel is being performed in the damaged coal seams in order to increase recovery of coal reserves (Wang, 2009). However, the abandoned geteroads intersect to each other all around the area. So a series of production issues arose while the panel face is passing through these AG. Gang and Gong (2015) analyzed the roof stability and abutment pressure distribution during the face was passing those AG that were parallel and inclined to the faceline. Xie, et al. (2015) proposed the ground control mechanism by passing the AG in top-coal caving longwall mining. He recommended to stop the face advance until the roof is over, using high strength bolts and cable bolts, and grouting consolidation. This paper studies the different mining methods by analyzing the longwall panel layout and AG distribution in damage coal seams. Theoretical analysis and field observation were conducted to determine the overburden movement when the face was advancing under the AG. The pillar between face and parallel AG changes from elastic to plastic and eventually to the residual supporting status. All these three status was combined with the roof structure to establish the theoretical model to calculate the shield support capacity. Numerical modeling was employed to simulate the pillar stability and determine the abutment pressure distribution as the face inclined to the AG during longwall mining."

Electrorefined, magnesium-reduced, and sodium-reduced titanium samples were evaluated for recrystallization behavior, effect of cold rolling on tensile properties, and bend ductility. Curves were determined for the softening of 2.5 to 80 percent reduced cold-rolled metal that was annealed over a temperature range of 300° to 800° C. Upon annealing, coarsening of the grains was found to occur for reductions in thickness of less than 20 percent in titanium made by all three processes. The presence of metallic impurities greatly inhibits coarsening for reductions in thickness below 20 percent, but for reductions in excess of 20 percent grain size is essentially constant at each annealing temperature. The three grades of titanium did not harden excessively from cold rolling; both tensile and bend ductility were good for reduction in thickness up to 80 percent. Upon annealing, softening occurs between 400° and 600° C., and, based on microstructure and property studies, full annealing is accomplished after 30 minutes at 700° C. for the magnesium-reduced and electrorefined titanium and at 800° C. for the sodium-reduced titanium.

An investigation was initiated to obtain the scope of the problems associated with recycling various waste oxide materials generated at Inland Steel and to identify and? test techniques that could possibly aid in increasing the amount of waste oxide materials recycled to primary. operations. Based on the results of this work, several new techniques were developed ?and tested on ?a plant or laboratory scale. These include the use of cold-bond agglomeration methods for producing waste oxide agglomerates for use as a cooling agent or scrap substitute in steelmaking operations, and the use of various techniques for beneficiating blast furnace flue dust and soaking pit rubble so that the upgraded materials can be utilized in sinter plant or ironmaking operations. The physical and chemical characteristics of the waste oxide materials and the results of the laboratory and plant testing are discussed in this paper.

The lanthanon compounds are becoming increasingly more important for ceramic and allied applications. As the supply increases and the cost decreases, further development of these interesting materials will undoubtedly lead to new applications and an increased demand. Recent improvements in separation processes have lead to high purity in the individual lanthanon oxides. This report includes short discussions on the mineralogy of the ores as raw materials, and on the separation processes required to produce the pure individual lanthanon oxides in useful quantities. While it cannot do very well to use the common weak magnetic separation equipment in the final cleaning to remove Si and lower impurities. At present, the plants, adopting single magnetic separation process to realize cleaning and removing Si and lowering impurities, are in the minority. Most magnetite plants adopt the flotation separation process to remove Si, lower impurities and purify the concentrate. Though with stable indexes and high Fe recovery rate, the flotation process is very complicated, high-cost and with lots of environmental pollution. If adopting the weak magnetic separation equipment can realize removing Si, lowering impurities and the final cleaning, the magnetic separation process should be the primary choice."

En el estudio se adopta un nuevo enfoque mediante el uso de bajos niveles de energía HVP para cambiar la procesabilidad de los minerales y lograr una reducción general en el consumo de energía, así como un mejor rendimiento metalúrgico. El artículo discute los vacíos de conocimiento y las incertidumbres que inhiben la adopción del HVP por parte de la industria minera y hace hincapié en la necesidad de realizar más investigaciones para lograr la siguiente generación de tecnología de conminución.

The recovery of silver and gallium from flue dust with acidified thiourea solutions was examined. The studied parameters were temperature, particle size, thiourea concentration, acid concentration, and the presence of oxidants. The study of the extraction of these two metals was undertaken in sulfuric acid medium. Silver dissolution was dependent on all examined parameters, whereas gallium extraction was only dependent on the initial acid concentration. The experimental results suggest a new very efficient method for recovery of both silver and gallium. Almost complete recovery of silver and gallium can be accomplished within 90 minutes. A technological scheme for recovery of both metals is also proposed.

An infrared external reflection spectroscopy (ERS) technique has been developed to study the structure of the adsorbed layer of ethyl xanthate formed on copper and natural chalcocite (Cu2S) electrodes. The infrared technique provides information concerning the identity and the orientation of the adsorbed species at monolayer and submonolayer coverages. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies have also been conducted to monitor changes at the surface. The results show that the first oxidation peak on the voltammograms for copper and the first and second oxidation peaks on the voltammograms for chalcocite electrodes are not characteristic of a chemisorbed xanthate species, which is contrary to what has been reported by other investigators previously. As evidenced by the XPS spectra, there was an increase in sulfur relative to copper on the copper and chalcocite surfaces over the potential region where these oxidation processes occur. The spectroscopic results (ERS, XPS) indicate that the second and third (on copper) and the third and fourth (on chalcocite) oxidation processes recorded on the voltammograms are due to cuprous ethyl xanthate adsorption. The orientation of the adsorbed molecules of xanthate was observed to change with increasing surface coverage. Therefore, it has been concluded that xanthate can modify the copper and chalcocite surface in two different ways. At lower potentials, xanthate is a source of sulfur for the formation of a sulfur-rich surface. At higher potentials, an adsorption layer of cuprous ethyl xanthate is formed. Contact angle measurements show that both of these processes of xanthate surface modification lead to an increase in the hydrophobicity of the substrates.

'Gold-telluride mineralization was deposited in quartz veins which cut a Late Cretaceous tonalite pluton emplaced near the southern margin of the Peninsular tectono-stratigraphic terrane in south-central Alaska. The gold-bearing veins formed shortly after the development of a widespread Cu-Mo sheeted quartz vein system. Early mineral assemblages consist of quartz, white mica, pyrite, and arsenopyrite (wall rock only). Subsequently, pyrite. sphalerite, chalcopyrite, zoned tetrahedrite and gold precipitated within multiply fractured veins. Late stage galena, tellurides (altaite, nagyagite, coloradoite), and Pb-Sb or Pb-Cu-Bi sulfosalta with gold constitute bonanza ore assemblages that are variably associated with quartz, white mica, ankerite, and calcite. Fluid inclusion evidence coupled with mineral assemblage paragenesis suggests the depletion of volatiles (C02, H2S) and cooling resulted in the precipitation of high grade gold mineral assemblages.

"With the increase of shaft excavation depth, the thickness of the shaft lining increases sharply. It is difficult to reduce thickness of lining effectively by improving high-strength concrete performance. The concept of the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is that surrounding rock plays a certain role in tunnel support. The solution should be to find the correct relationship between shaft lining thickness and rock strength, which is related with the interaction between the surrounding rock and concrete lining. The plane strain mechanics model is introduced to calculate lining thickness. Shaft lining design of Cixi Colliery in China is completed with the mechanics-based method proposed in this study. The lining design is verified through numerical simulation and field monitoring. The simulation results show that the maximum mises stress is located at the inner edge of the shaft lining. The increase of lining thickness cannot effectively reduce concrete grade. The monitoring results indicate that a lining design thickness of 900mm with C60 concrete, is safe and reliable in the shaft over 1000metres.This analytical design method can well be referenced in similar deep shaft projects.INTRODUCTION The New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), thought to have helped revolutionize the modern tunneling method, is the most extensive design philosophy and construction principle in today's tunnel engineering. It began to attract attention in the 1960s based on the work of Ladislaus von Rabcewicz, Leopold Müller, and Franz Pacher in Austria[1]. NATM was originally developed for tunneling in depth and in high situ-stress conditions in the Alps. The history of sequential excavation was reviewed, which highlights the progress of tunnel design and construction in Europe after NATM[2]. Structural conditions were introduced into the equilibrium of tunnels in NATM, and the additional force was estimated to stabilize the excavation of the tunnel[3].From the perspective of applied mechanics, there was no accuracy theory to explain the interaction between the tunnel structure and the surrounding ground. Since its development, the functional performance equation for ball milling (McIvor, 1988) has facilitated a new understanding of industrial circuit cause and effect relationships, leading to significant strides in operational performance. Success stories of this approach to plant circuit performance improvement are now too numerous to list. Finch and McIvor (circa 1986) also discovered that the functional performance mill grinding rate at the size of interest was the same cumulative grinding rate that is calculated from mill feed and discharge size distributions using a first-order rate equation. By calculating these cumulative grinding rates for all screen sizes, a complete ball mill model is generated (as used by Finch and Ramirez, 1981). Others in industry, Hinde and Kalala (2009), for example, have noted the same. Lacking the complexity needed to maintain their interest, most researchers have ignored this model, broadly opting instead for Epstein’s (1948) characterization of grinding as a chemical reaction, combining selection rate and breakage size distribution functions. The much simpler ball mill model has previously been incorporated into a proprietary circuit modeling program (McIvor, 2005) and used for plant improvement work (for example, see McIvor and Finch, 2007, and McIvor, 2014). Now, by combining this business-friendly ball mill model with optimization criteria from functional performance analysis, a circuit modeling system (including the needed supplementary steps to assure successful plant implementation of circuit design changes) is at the disposal of every plant metallurgist, grinding equipment/ material provider and circuit designer.

Single crystal whiskers of ZrO2 and TiO2 were grown by solution and crystallization of these oxides in molten baths. Mixtures of Na2B407 and LiC1 were the most suitable growth media for zirconia. Sodium borate alone and Na2CO3 plus SiO2 were best suited for titania. The solubilities of zirconia and titania in molten sodium borate were determined, Whether zirconia whiskers were dendritic or nondendritic depended on the temperature used. The best single crystal whiskers were grown below 1,100° C. Titania whiskers always grew as single crystals. The tensile strengths of zirconia and titania whiskers were about 15,000 psi and 50,000 psi, respectively. Modulus of rupture was about 49,000 psi for zirconia whiskers and 75,000 psi for titania whiskers. Chemical analyses showed the zirconia and titania whiskers to be pure. The zirconia and titania whiskers were shown by X-ray analysis to be, respectively, baddeleyite and rutile.

Tests were conducted to investigate the effects of cyclone geometry, operating conditions, and particle size on magnetite classification. The effects of these parameters on the partition curve for narrow size fractions were studied using a 25mm diameter cyclone cleaning -150 µ m coal. Additional tests were run to investigate the effects of geometry and operating conditions on the slurry, solid, and water splits. The relationship between the relative density of the underflow stream and the relative density of separation was also investigated. This paper presents the results from this study.

Introduction In Canada, the mining industry and water-power development are intimately associated in that mining, which ranks second among the country's primary industries, depends principally upon hydro-electric energy for its large power requirements. On the whole, the Dominion has been very favourably endowed with water-power resources; generally speaking it is a well-watered country with numerous rivers and lakes located in are as where the topography favours water-power development. Precipitation, the raw material of water power, varies from an annual fall of more than l00 inches on the Pacific coast to about 12 inches in sections of the Prairies and the Northwest Territories; in Ontario and Quebec the annual average is 24 to 40 inches and in Nova Scotia about 45 inches. In its descent to the sea, the resulting run-off, much of it from considerable altitudes, creates sources of potential energy at every rapid and fall along the country's many streams and rivers. Many of the innumerable lakes in the Dominion provide storage basins for the regulation of stream flow, thus enhancing the potential power of available sites. While water-power resources are fairly well distributed across the Dominion, as is shown on the accompanying map of Canada showing power sites (Figure 1), it is particularly fortunate that those areas which are lacking in indigenous fuels have been compensated in large degree for this scarcity by being favoured with a high proportion of the total potential water power. This has an important bearing on the mining industry in that extensive mining operations can be economically carried out in the great Canadian Shield, which is lacking in commercial coal deposits but is rich in water-power resources. This Precambrian formation, which forms a wide belt around Hudson bay and in which many metalliferous ores are found, was 'subject to severe glaciation in a recent geological period, so that its river systems are comparatively young and are characterized by numerous lakes joined by short reaches of fast water, rapids, and falls which offer frequent opportunities for power development. The western Cordilleran region, which also is important in mining, has abundant water power. The accompanying geological map (Figure 2), prepared by the Geological Survey of Canada, shows the great extent of the Precambrian and Cordilleran regions and may be compared with the map of water-power sites to show the high incidence of water-power resources in these potential mining areas in which important mineral discoveries have already been made.
