While Cr(VI) is a known carcinogen, the underlying biochemical mechanism is still not fully understood (1). In a pioneering study Jennette (2) utilized electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy to demonstrate that a long-lived Cr(V) species is generated during the reduction of Cr(VI) by microsomes in the presence of NADPH. Later Wetterhahn and co-workers (3, 4) showed that incubation of chromate with isolated rat liver mitochondria causes the reduction of Cr(VI), as well as the formation of a Cr(V) species. Analogous Cr(V) species have also been detected in the reduction of Cr(VI) by other cellular systems such as Hanserulla polymorphared (5) and blood cells (6, 7). All these as well as other studies (8-12) have suggested that this Cr(V) species plays a significant role in the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity. Thus far, however, the chemical structure of this dominant Cr(V) species formed in cellular systems has not been identified, and this observation provided an impetus for the present investigation. Another reason for undertaking this study was that some recent reports (10-16) suggest that hydroxyl ('OH) radicals may also play an important role in the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity. In particular, it has been shown that OH radicals are formed in reactions between Cr(V) species and H2O2 (13-16), and that the radical yield depends on the chemical structure of the Cr(V) species (15). For example, while Cr(V)-diol complexes efficiently generate OH radicals, another Cr(V) species, the tetraperoxochromate (CrO3/8) ion, does not (15). Thus in the present study, we focused our attention on the following: (a) structural identification of the Cr(V) species generated in the reduction of Cr(VI) by subcellular as well as cellular systems, using microsomes, mitochondria, and Escherichia coli; (b) possible detection of OH radical in the same systems since there is no earlier report of chromium-mediated generation of 'OH radicals in a cellular system; (c) possible involvement of molecular oxygen in chromium-related OH radical generation since a recent report (17) indicated that Cr(VI) mutagenesis is strongly oxygen dependent; and (d) elucidation of the mechanism of OH radical formation in these systems.

Subsidence planning and control must be an integral part of mine design in order to minimize the economic impact of underground mining on the surface. Pre-calculation of surface deformations which may cause damage to surface structures must be performed and dam-age criteria must be established, if the response of structures to such movements is to be determined and the extent of damages to be assessed. In this paper the Surface Deformation Prediction System (S.D.P.S.), which can be used to predict accurately the vertical and horizontal parameters of surface movements due to underground mining, is discussed. The Subsidence Response Modeling Program (S.R.M.P.). which can be applied to evaluate the response of buildings to subsidence-induced movements, is also reviewed. Finally, an example is presented demonstrating the applicability of these techniques for subsidence design and control.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing clay mining and crushing methods and costs at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs might, in many instances, cause embarrassment to the individual operator as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to a technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations may ensue. "The main elements of hard coal extraction systems in the Polish mining industry, including the characteristics of gateroads, are described, followed by several dozen underground measurements of gateroad roof sag performed in different geological and mining conditions in Upper Silesia Coal Basin.Based on the analysis of the roof sag measurements, an attempt to describe the gateroad roof sag process using a geometrical model was made. To build the model, it was assumed that the roof sag curve could be described by three straight lines. The first line describes the roof sag ahead of the longwall face; the second line, the sag at the longwall-gateroad junction zone; and the last line describes the zone behind the longwall face. Determining the intersection points and inclination angles is essential for the model. These model parameters depend on the geological and mining conditions in the gateroad.Using the statistical computations and analysis, the dependencies between the characteristic points of the gateroad roof sag model and the selected geological and mining parameters were defined. The STATISTICA computer program by StatSoft was used for computation.This paper presents a simple form of the geometrical description of roadway roof sag progression that is very useful during the gateroad support design process.INTRODUCTIONThe longwall system with caving is the dominant method in European mining in cases of hard coal seam extraction. For instance, in Poland, in 2009, 117 longwalls were driven, with total production of 77.5 million tonnes. In roughly 95% of the longwalls, mining operations were conducted using longwalls with roof caving; the remaining 5% used the hydraulic stowing system. The average mining depth was about 700 m (2,297 ft), and average daily output per face was approximately 2,600 tonnes per day. When using the longwall mining system, gateroads play an important role. These principal roadways transport materials, mine crews, and output. In addition, they impact ventilation of the extraction area, affecting, among other things, the climatic conditions or methane hazard. Unfortunately, difficulties often appear in maintaining an adequate size for the gateroads, due to the face line, which causes origination zones with stress concentration around the gateroad, resulting in rock mass movements in the form ofroofsag, floor heave, or horizontal convergence (Figure 1)."

"Base metals and precious metals can be recovered from a nickel matte or nickel concentrate using the Outotec nickel chloride leaching process. The raw material is leached with hydrochloric acid and the metals are recovered by solvent extraction, where ammonia is used to control the pH. Ammonium chloride is regenerated to ammonia and the side product of this step is calcium chloride solution. The regeneration utilizes either calcium oxide or calcium hydroxide. The calcium chloride solution is used to convert sulfuric acid into a hydrochloric acid solution while producing pure gypsum as a side product. The regeneration and reuse of ammonia and hydrochloric acid in this process will have a positive impact, from the point of view of both operating costs and environmental sustainability. This paper concentrates on the test work and technical concept development performed by Outotec to implement and develop chemical regeneration and recycling into a vital part of the nickel chloride leaching process.INTRODUCTION According to a nickel market analysis, the nickel market is expected to grow in the future. Main driver for this growth is the increase in stainless steel consumption as the living standards are equalizing globally. The expected increase in the amount of electrical cars and the need for nickel in the batteries of electrical cars also gives potential for the increased need for nickel in near future. At the moment the use of nickel in nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) and nickel-cobalt-aluminium (NCA) Li-ion batteries is in the range of 14 ktpa. It is estimated to increase to the level of 90 ktpa by 2025. In every era of the nickel industry, Outotec has been constantly developing new processes to create environmentally sustainable and economically viable processing routes. The Outotec® Nickel Matte Chloride Leaching process is a great example of a process that is flexible regarding raw material and could also treat nickel raw materials that are difficult for smelters. Outotec’s main options for pyrometallurgical nickel treatment include the Outotec® Direct Nickel Flash Smelting process (DON) and the Outotec® Ausmelt TSL process. The DON process is operated in Boliden Harjavalta Nickel Smelter in Finland. Ausmelt process is in use for example in Daye nonferrous plant in China. In the Outotec® Direct Nickel Flash Smelting Process, a sulphide nickel concentrate is processed in an Outotec Flash Smelting Furnace (FSF). Producing concentrates and processing them by Outotec Direct Nickel Flash Smelting to matte followed by hydrometallurgical refining offers a reliable route from concentrate to product. In the DON process, high-grade matte with low Fe content is produced in the FSF and the valuable metals in the slag are recovered in an electric furnace (EF). The Outotec® Ausmelt TSL process can use a large variety of raw materials (concentrates, secondary material and scrap metal) as feed. Fuel and oxygen are injected into the furnace through TSL (Top Submerged Lance) and this enables efficient smelting. Both Flash Smelting and TSL plants produce nickel mattes, which can be refined with Outotec hydrometallurgical processes."

This paper describes the sinking and lining of a 14 foot 6 inch finished diameter shaft down to and into the salt of a typical dome of the Gulf States region. The conditions and nature of the strata encountered divide the work into three distinct sections - that in (1) alluvial surface deposits, sunk through by open caisson methods, (2) water bearing rock, directly above the salt, and in (3) salt. The ternary Ni2MnGa intermetallic compound is an intelligent material which has both a ferromagnetic property and a shape memory effect (SME). The use of the shape memory alloy films for an actuator of micro-machines is very attractive because of its large recovery force. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effects of fabrication conditions and to clarify the relationships between these properties and fabrication conditions of the Ni-Mn-Ga films. The Ni-Mn-Ga films with a thickness of nearly 5 um were deposited with a radio-frequency magnetron sputtering apparatus using a Ni50Mn25Ga25 or Ni52Mn24Ga24 target. They were heat-treated at various temperatures between 873 and 1273 K for homogenization and ordering and then cooled in a furnace. The composition of the films depended on the sputtering power. The as-deposited films were crystalline and had columnar grains. After the heat treatment the grains widened and the grain boundary became indistinct with the increasing heat treatment temperature. The martensitic transformation temperature of the heat-treated films increased with increasing nickel content. Furthermore the effect of plastic deformation and constraint aging on SME is also investigated. After plastic deformation, the two-way SME was shown through the martensitie transformation and its reversion, The intensity of X-ray diffraction peaks from stress-induced martensitie phase was found. The constraint-aged films also showed the two-way 3ME by thermal cycling.

"A laboratory scale model furnace was constructed for obtaining radially inward oriented columnar grains in disc shaped castings. The furnace consisted of eleven circular, concentric, equispaced resistance heaters on each half of a split graphite mold. Water or air flowing through a copper pipe along the periphery of the disc constituted the heat sink. After filling the mold, the heaters were turned off consecutively in top and bottom pairs from the rim towards the center, causing the temperature gradients to move inward. Equiaxed structure was obtained at the center by turning off the inner coils together when desired. Sn:15%Pb alloy was used to cast integral blade disc castings using the above technique to obtain dual-property discs with a central equiaxed structure and an outer columnar grain structure projecting inwards from the blades to the rim. A numerical technique was used to predict the temperature profile in the disc during solidification, and good correlation was obtained with the experimentally measured temperature profiles. The corresponding heat transfer coefficient values obtained were h = 544 Wm- 2k-1 (0.013 cal/cm2- ° C-sec) for cooling between metal and chill and h' = 71 Wm- 2k-1 (0.0017 cal/cm2- ° C-sec) for the heat input from the hot mold to the liquid metal. BackgroundHigh temperature alloys used in the current generation of gas turbine engines have evolved through two main stages of development: in 1950's, the increase in the efficiency of gas turbines was paced by improvements in alloy design, which led to the development of Ni and Co-based superalloys (1). By mid-1960's, it was realized that improved alloy chemistry alone was inadequate in meeting the increasingly stringent service requirements. The focus of research then shifted from alloy development to process development, and resulted in the introduction of directional solidification (DS) techniques for the production of turbine blades and vanes (1,2).Under typical operating conditions, the blades and vanes are subjected to aerodynamic loading, while the blades are additionally subjected to high centrifugal loading and vibratory stresses. Environmental and regulatory authorities are increasingly requiring that precious metals heap leach piles be contoured before they are abandoned so they may present a more "natural" look to the eye. Depending on the ore type, many of these contoured heaps will be subject to substantial erosion by precipitation events, native plants will have difficulty in establishing themselves and slimes be washed onto surrounding areas or into watercourses. This paper presents the argument that the results of contouring heaps are counter to good environmental practice. Calculations which have been made demonstrate that leveling and berming the heap tops as well as berming the edge of each lift or setback will effectively prevent water erosion and promote the growth of native plant species.

This study compares the use of an aminophosphonate chelating resin Purolite S950 and a sulphonic acid strong cation exchange resin Purolite C160H to recover nickel and cobalt from the synthetic bioleach solutions. Batch adsorption of metal citrate is performed as a function of metal citrate concentration (15~2000 mg/L) and solution pH (0.01M and 0.1M citric acid). The adsorption mechanism as inferred from the fit to Langmuir (LM), Freundlich (FM) and Redlich-Peterson (RP) models demonstrates that nickel citrate adsorbed onto C160H appears monolayer in comparison to that adsorbed onto S950 exists multilayer. In contrast, cobalt citrate adsorption onto both C160H and S950 agrees with the LM model. The results have shown that loading capacities of nickel and cobalt citrate onto C160H are 60 and 65 mg/g whereas those observed onto S950 are 16mg/g and 6 mg/g respectively. These are achieved in metal citrate prepared in 0.1 M citric acid. Resin regeneration is conducted in using 2 M nitric acid solution. The results show high efficiency of nickel and cobalt citrate elution from Purolite C160H. Findings from this study suggest Purolite C160H is a suitable adsorbent for recovering nickel and cobalt from bioleaching solutions.

The objective of this investigation was to make a preliminary evaluation of titanium-vanadium-zirconium, alloys using room-temperature tensile properties as criteria for selecting promising alloys for future critical studies. Arc-melted titanium-vanadium-zirconium alloys ranging in composition from 5 to 20 a/o (atomic-percent) vanadium and 5 to 30 a/o zirconium, were investigated to evaluate hardness, hot workability, and room-temperature tensile properties. Metallographic examination coupled with hardness measurements were used to follow structural changes and aging response. Room-temperature tensile properties were criteria for evaluating mechanical and engineering properties of the alloys.

A hydrometallurgical process has been tested at the Sherritt Research Centre for separation of zinc, lead, copper and precious metal values from the zinc oxide fume leach residue stockpiled at the HBM&S operations in Flin Flon, Manitoba. Zinc is found primarily as zinc femte and sphalerite in the residue, lead as lead sulphate and jarosite, and copper as sulphide and jarositic compounds. Gypsum and siliceous gangue are significant diluents. The separation process includes hot acid, atmospheric and reducing (sulphur dioxide) leaching; zinc, copper and lead flotation; and atmospheric iron removal steps. Zinc is recovered to a high strength zinc sulphate solution and to a zinc sulphide concentrate suitable for feed to a roaster or to a zinc pressure leach plant; lead to a high grade lead sulphate concentrate suitable for feed to a lead smelter, and copper to a high grade copper sulphide concentrate suitable for feed to a copper smelter. Precious metals are divided between the zinc, lead and copper concentrates.

A comprehensive model of solution flow through heap leach systems requires a numerical solution with the ability to predict variably saturated-unsaturated flow through porous media domains that contain materials with spatially variable properties. The types of flow associated with stockpile leach processes lead to flow problems, such as infiltration into dry soil, drainage, perched water tables and flow through heterogeneous materials. Computational methods for modelling this class of flow behaviour are conventionally based on the classical Richards' equation. However, the governing equations are highly non-linear, difficult to solve, and require iterative numerical solution methods. The pressure-based form of the Richards' equation suffers from poor mass balance, while the mixed form can possess convergence difficulties. An adaptive transformed mixed algorithm is described, which reduces the non-linearity of the problem, optimizes the time step size, and provides a fast, numerically robust scheme that significantly reduces computation (or CPU) time. This method is shown to give fast, accurate solutions on a number of complex flow problems. The utility of this algorithm is illustrated through its implementation within the PHYSICA computational modelling software, which incidentally, provides a framework for a comprehensive heap leach model.

A series of nonionic and anionic surfactants were tested to enhance the flotation response of a low rank coal. An ethoxylated octyl phenol and several polypropylene polyethylene block copolymers were tested as nonionic surfactants. The anionic surfactant was a dioctyl sulfosuccinate. All the surfactants employed improved the yield significantly but the influence on grade was complex. Separate studies were conducted to determine the emulsification behavior of the surfactants. For the nonionic water soluble reagents tested, a correlation between emulsifying power of the surfactant and flotation was observed. An increase in the number of droplets produced in surfactant containing systems was considered to be the main reason for increase in the yield. Since it increased the number of collisions between dodecane droplets and coal particles. When a surfactant was introduced into the flotation pulp prior to addition of dodecane, it decreased the benefits of the surfactant significantly. The decrease was attributed to an increase in the wettability of coal and a decrease in the surfactant available for emulsification. When a suitable surfactant was added as a solution dissolved in the oily collector, a considerable increase in yield was observed.

Depleting copper resources and advancing technologies have challenged industries to develop more viable, adaptable and cost efficient processes using also secondary raw materials in copper production. This study is targeting to that goal by dynamic modelling of flow and heat transfer coupled with chemical kinetics in an industrial scale flash smelting furnace settler using commercial CFD software ANSYS Fluent. First, different physical phenomena occurring inside the settler, for example, settling and separation of the matte/slag phases, and heat transfer between slag/matte phases and settler walls are studied. Secondly, reaction kinetics between matte and slag, and between slag/matte and settler walls, and impurity element distribution will be studied. This would also include phase changes phenomena due to these reactions and the flow of the reaction gases inside the settler. Settling of polydispersed droplets, their coagulation, breakage, and WEEE particle behavior are further targets of the modelling work.

Caval Ridge Mine (CVM) is one of the newly established open-cut coal mines of BHP in Queensland, where no tailings dam is planned to be built in order to minimise environmental impacts from mining activities. The waste streams from the Coal Handling and Processing Plant, including fine tailings dewatered by belt filter presses, coarse rejects, and mixed plant rejects, are co-disposed within waste dumps built with pre-strip and dragline spoils. Due to high rejects output (35 – 60% of feed) and low spoil to reject ratio (< 5) the large quantities of rejects bring significant geotechnical and operational challenges to CVM, which are exacerbated by increasing annual production rates and additional rejects from washing coal from an adjacent mine. Further in-house geotechnical review commenced in mid-2014 based on the initial geotechnical studies during the project stage of CVM between 2011 and 2013. The outcomes have enabled rejects disposal at CVM by constructing large belt filtered tailings cells, coarse rejects only dumps, and co-disposal of the mixed plant rejects at dump tip-heads. This paper presents the rejects disposal strategies at CVM from both technical and operational aspects. It also discusses future projects for belt filtered tailings moisture reduction including assessment of tailings clay mineralogy, as well as mixed plant reject co-disposal verification and optimisation.CITATION:Li, J, Payne, D and Hooi, H, 2018. A gradual decrease in injection rates commonly occurs as a water-flooding project becomes older. This decrease can be attributed to changes in reservoir conditions, such as swelling of clay minerals, fillup, or gradual plugging of the sand face. However, a rapid decrease in the rate of injection indicates abnormal behavior and is cause for alarm. Extreme plugging conditions can completely stop injections into a formation. Such behavior in wells was the main concern of the tests described in this report. An accepted method of alleviating this condition is by backflowing input wells - closing the supply lines to the wells and allowing the reservoir pressure to force water back into the wellbore and to the surface. If backflowing is not successful, a string of smaller diameter pipe sometimes is run inside the casing, and the sand face is flushed with a waterspray. More drastic treatment is to inject acid into the wellbore to dissolve extraneous matter, or even part of the reservoir material, in an attempt to restore the permeability of the sand immediately around the wellbore. Any of these procedures can he coordinated with bailing and swabbing of the well for cleanout purposes.

The Appalachian Ores Co., Sweetsprings, W. Va. was a small but persistent producer of manganese ore for several years prior to 1942. Most of the ore mined was hard, nodular psilomelane, with some pyrolusite and, wad, occurring in clay. The Bureau of Mines started an investigation of the area in January 1942 and completed the work in May 1942. Twenty-four churn-drill holes were bored, aggregating 2,084 feet. A total of 420 feet of test pits was sunk on selected drill holes to check the churn-drill sampling. Twelve drifts and crosscuts aggregating 139 feet were driven from the bottom of test pits to investigate concentrations of manganese nodules. Three hundred sixty-six churn-drill samples and 102 other samples were sent to Bureau laboratories for analyses. Beneficiation tests were conducted in the Burp.au of Mines laboratory in Rolla, Mo. Results of testing 10 samples indicated that approximately 80 percent of the material in crude ore could be discarded by log washing. Gravity tests indicated 'that 55 percent of the total manganese in the crude ore was recoverable as a gravity concentrate averaging 34.6 percent manganese.
