Measurements of surface magnetic field noise were made at various locations over the Geneva Coal Mine near Price, Utah, on June 12, 1973. The locations selected were on the surface over emergency locator beacons underground at depths between 3S0 meters (1150 ft.) and 488 meters (1600 ft.). The surface terrain where these measurements were made was mountainous, and access was difficult. There were no power lines within several miles, and the weather was clear; therefore, the magnetic noise levels were about as low as will normally occur. Results of measurements of distant sferics indicate rather sharp cutoff frequencies below which broadband, impulsive noise is attenuated. The mechanism of propagation for this noise above the daytime cutoff frequency of 3500 Hz and the nighttime cutoff frequency of 1700 Hz is deduced to be a waveguide formed by the D or F layers of ionosphere as an upper plane and the earth as a lower plane.

"Galena is the finest component of the product of a closed-circuit grind treating a lead-zinc ore, largely due to preferential recycling of this high-density mineral by the cyclone. For example, at the Pine Point Mines concentrator, for ~ 55% -200 mesh over-all, the galena will be close to 95% -200 mesh. This sliming of the lead can limit recovery, selectivity and dewatering. A proposed circuit modification to reduce the sliming is to incorporate a unit cell. A simulator was constructed to study the No. 3 grinding circuit at Pine Point modified by a unit cell on ball mill discharge (BMD).The simulator used a cumulative size basis rate-of-breakage with plug flow ball mill model, the parameters being obtained by laboratory grinding tests. Flotation and the cyclone models used a cumulative recovery/size matrix. The behaviour of each mineral, galena, sphalerite, pyrite and calcite/dolomite, was simulated. Simulation was adapted to a programmable calculator. A close fit to the existing circuit performance at two tonnages and mineral mixes was established.The simulator showed that the modified circuit could significantly coarsen the Pb grind, from 95% to —50% -200 mesh, depending on recovery, without substantially altering the size of the other minerals. The other principal findings were: compared to laboratory flotation tests on existing circuit BMD, the unit cell concentrate (CONC) will be coarser and markedly lower in grade; relatively low unit cell stage recoveries are desirable, because the cyclone scavenges the tail to give a circuit recovery which is higher than the unit cell stage recovery; unit cell stage recovery should not exceed the cyclone stage recovery, as the latter is the maximum circuit recovery; low unit cell stage recovery helps offset the disadvantage of the high flow at BMD; other high-density minerals will also be scavenged into the CONC, as illustrated by pyrite, making CONC quality difficult to maintain; density control of BMD flotation does not greatly alter feed density to the cyclone or ball mill.Possible plant metallurgy is forecast for a CONC diverted to final lead concentrate."

The problems of slope stability in open cast mines are examined. A criterion, the instantaneous stripping ratio, is suggested for use in the design of pit slopes and as an index of control at all stages of the exploitation of the orebody. This criterion may also be related to safety and to the maximizing of profits. Two approaches to safe design of slopes, one from the point of view of soil mechanics and the other from the point of view of rock mechanics, are described and critically compared. The effect on slope stability of the regional tectonic stress field is discussed. Explanation is given of the application of the Terzaghi effective stress concept to problems in both soil and rock environments, including possible effects when borehole deformation techniques are used to measure stresses in rock in situ. A company embarking on open cast mining is faced with two basic questions: 1) will the venture be profitable and 2) can it be carried out with safety? The two questions are obviously interrelated because both depend upon the slope angles adopted for the pit. The cost of open cast mining depends largely upon the stripping ratio, defined as the volume of overburden that must be removed to the volume of ore recovered. The steeper the slope angles, the more favorable the stripping ratio, but the stability of the slopes, and therefore the safety of men and materials in the pit, require that the angles be made relatively flat. Consequently, the design depends upon a compromise: the slopes must be steep enough to result in economical mining and flat enough to ensure safety. Today there is a world trend towards deeper mining by open cast methods. This is mainly due to the higher cost of underground mining and the lower cost of open excavation resulting from the introduction of large modern earth and rock-moving machinery. Deeper open cast mining has led to a very great increase in the volumes of wasted overburden, and much thought is being given to the considerable economic benefits which would result if pit slopes could be made steeper by even one or two degrees. The result has been an increasing interest in research into slope stability problems in the expectation that the application of scientific principles will provide solutions leading both to economies and to more predictable operation of the mines. In at least four places, the U.S., Australia, Western Germany and Southern Africa, comprehensive investigations are at present in progress, and it is the object of this paper to review some of the more important aspects of these programs. RELATION BETWEEN ECONOMY OF OPERATION AND SLOPE ANGLES The main object of any industrial enterprise in a free economy is to make a profit. In mining, where profits must be made from a wasting capital asset, a further definition of the profit motive is imposed, namely that the economic aim should be to maximize the total possible profit. But since profits deferred for a number of years are not as valuable as profits that are immediately available, it is usual to discount deferred profits at some rate of interest which reflects their current or present value in the hands of the investor. Thus, in mining the logical aim can be defined more closely still: to maximize the present value of the total future profits. In commercial terms the present value represents the market value of the operation as a going concern. Many factors enter into the forecast of current and future profits. They include the volume of production, the price of the salable product and the cost of production. Current profits can be estimated with reasonable accuracy by the operating engineers; but it is the task of economists and management to assess future trends in the mineral markets and in the economy as a whole, and together with the engineers, they can then estimate the future cost and profitability of the mining operations. In open cast mining, the rate of ore production once decided on remains a virtually constant factor unless a major change in the capital structure of the mine is made. "Hydraulic rock drilling equipment has been in use at Falconbridge over the past two years in both production and development situations. This paper deals with the experience gained in the application of hydraulic drilling in the company's mines and discusses the benefits and problems encountered during their use. The paper primarily focuses on technical, operating, maintenance and economic aspects of the machines, and does not attempt to compare the performances of different machines from the various manufacturers.IntroductionThe Sudbury Operations of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited are comprised of five operating mines and two mines under development. All the production comes from underground mines, mostly at depths below 1000 metres. The company, faced with increases in operating costs and difficult mining conditions, has continued to seek solutions with the help of new mining technology.The development of electric-hydraulic drilling machines in Europe had been pursued with great interest and, in 1979, a decision was made to test these machines to prove their technical and economic viability under operating conditions. Since then, a number of electric-hydraulic machines have been evaluated in different situations and currently nine hydraulic machines are being used in the company's various mines. These machines are comprised of two-boom drilling jumbos for development, one-boom machines for longhole drilling and a large-hole-diameter drilling rig for blasthole drilling. One hydraulic jumbo has also been used in a cut-and-fill stope."

ONE of the fundamental principles of efficiency is the use of adequate and permanent records. The rapid increase in the manufacture and use of recording pryometers is a proof of the appreciation of efficiency principles on the part of the manufacturers engaged in the various technical industries. Where recording pyrometers are not employed in an industry in which temperature measurements are necessary, one will generally find that a printed form is used upon which is written, periodically, the temperatures measured by an indicating instrument. It is no serious condemnation of the workman to state that such records are often "doctored," but it is rather a reflection upon the executive who puts such temptation in the way of a workman. One of the well-known "tricks of the trade" is to "force." a furnace so that it will be at the proper temperature during the periodic trips of the foreman or other official. Indicating instruments and recorders may be used together to great advantage. The recorder furnishes .a printed record and a check upon the operator of the furnace, and a record of value in correlating properties of the finished product with the heat treatment. The indicator should be of assistance to the operator in controlling the furnace or oven. Modern practice requires a temperature-recording instrument that is as simple as possible, rugged, reliable, and sufficiently accurate. Of these qualifications reliability is paramount, particularly in cases where the recorder is used for controlling the temperature automatically. By a reliable instrument is meant one that will run continuously with little attention and with a consistent degree of accuracy. That is, if it is in error by 5 per cent. one day, it must be in error by a like amount on any other clay, and not by 2 per cent. or 10 per cent. The earlier forms of recorders were complex and delicate, or mechanically unsatisfactory and inaccurate, and required considerable attention to keep them in operation. Within the past few years, however, the development in the manufacture of temperature recording devices has been highly satisfactory and many excellent instruments are now available. .

"The Special Standard Surge bin at Agrium’s Vanscoy Potash Operations (VPO) has been plagued with flow problems and wear, and corrosion issues for it’s entire working life. Investigation showed that the carbon steel construction, bin geometry, and resultant funnel-flow pattern were directly responsible for production losses and disproportionate maintenance and capital costs. Potash enters this bin at between 140°C and 165°C, but the stagnant potash outside the active flow channel was much cooler, allowing moisture to migrate toward the outer regions, which caused corrosion of the walls and reduced live capacity as the potash in this area hardened and built up on the walls over time.A 2013 inspection revealed holes and paper-thin areas in the lower cylinder wall sections and in the conical hopper. The only thing preventing major leaks and even a potentially catastrophic failure was the buildup of stagnant hardened product on the cone walls. It was concluded that the cone had reached the end of its life and required replacement. VPO’s original plan was to replace the cone in kind and repair the cylinder as necessary; however, a failure-mode and bin-performance investigation combined with a lifecycle- cost analysis indicated it would be better to redesign the hopper.For success in retrofit projects, it is essential at the design stage to consider the bulk solid flow properties and the operating environment involved. Because education in this area is not offered at a university level, engineers often do not fully appreciate the effects of the flow properties of bulk solids on bulk material handling equipment.Jenike & Johanson conducted flow properties tests on samples of potash and using the data, redesigned the bin and the feeder. After the modifications, VPO’s surge bin provides safer, more reliable operation with a much longer predicted working life. Using this retrofit as an example, we aim to provide a general understanding of bulk solids flow theory and highlight the importance of customizing the design to the appropriate flow properties in the cost effectiveness, reliability, and safety of a bulk material handling system."

"This paper traces the main advances in mine lighting from neolithic times to the 1960s. The earliest lights consisted of reeds or strips of wood soaked in grease. As man's knowledge increased, the oil lamp, the candle, kerosene, acetylene and finally electricity have allowed him to see where no natural light could penetrate. These advances in technology, however, did not come easily. Many false starts were made and great dedication was required by a few lighting pioneers to overcome the many technical difficulties that were encountered. The lighting of coal mines in particular caused unique problems, as there was the ever-present threat of methane explosions. Advances in mine lighting will continue, but these advances are only possible because men like Davy, Wolf, Marsuat and Edison paved the way.IntroductionMan's first efforts at mining consisted of merely picking rock off the surface of the earth. The sun was his only source of light. The early mines of the Neolithic age were simply vertical pits, 5 to 8 m deep. In order to follow an orebody, miners began to dig horizontally from the bottom of these pits, and as work progressed the need for additional light became apparent. With the discovery of the light-giving properties of fire, man was no longer dependent on natural light. Figure 1 gives an impression of the earliest artificial mine lighting used.Early Evidence of Mine LightingCarbonized residue from wood chips which had been inserted into rock cracks can be found in early Neolithic workings. The mines at Krzemionki Opatowski in Poland contain very narrow low tunnels that were lit in this fashion and were worked from 2300 to 1800 B. C. The wood had to burn downward to provide light and because wood burns poorly in this position, the chips were probably soaked in animal fat to make them burn more easily."

"The Swayze gold mine is an Archean vein deposit in northern Ontario. The veins are superimposed on a conjugate joint system and are contained within an anastomosing alteration envelope in a metadiorite body. Reserves were estimated on the basis of fire assays of channel samples and car load samples from underground mine openings, surface and underground diamond drilling and surface trenching. A semi-variogram constructed from channel samples along one of the drifts yielded a horizontal, regionalized influence of approximately 9.0 m. Common industry practice has been to use 6.1 m for similar deposits in Ontario. Proven ore was defined from underground openings. The maximum extrapolation distance for proven ore along strike and dip from a data point is taken to be 6.1 m. Probable ore is extrapolated 7.6 m from a data point in a mine opening or from a drill intersection. Possible mineralization is based on geological continuity one-half the distance to a neighbouring data point.The mineral inventory estimate of 1.45 million tonnes at a grade of4.8 g Au/tonne gives an excellent outline of the geology of the deposit. The deposit contains 313 000 tonnes of ore reservesat a fully diluted grade of6.9 g Au/tonne. These figures include dilution for several reasons: (I) a 2.1 m mining width is used rather than the more typical 1.5 m width to allow for over break because of the shallow dip of some vein zones; (2) over break is allowed for adjacent to major unmineralized dykes; and (3) grams of gold are deleted from estimates to allow for the mining of unavoidable minor dykes.A personal computer with off-the-shelf software was used to compile 712 geologically defined ore blocks and sort them into a number of revealing categories. The computer was used to perform grade sensitivity tests, as well as to evaluate depth potential. Hopefully, the reiterative aspect of the method has randomized the errors and helped to cancel their effects."

The term "timbered stope" is here meant to denote stopes in which timbering is the predominant feature of the mining method. Stopes with stull sets, as in the Hecla mine, are types of timbered stopes; these types are probably the best-known. Timbering stopes by means of square sets is not as common as formerly, as the system is not often necessary, yet there are good examples and large tonnages are being mined by the method. The square set may be utilized in ordinary overhand stopes if the orebody is suitable. At some mines, square sets have been abandoned in favor of top-slicing; and at others, the square set has superseded horizontal cut and backfilling. A drift, either in the wall or orebody, is necessary before opening the sill floor. In wide deposits, there may be a grillage of drifts and crosscuts, and at least one raise to the level above is needed in each stope for ventilation and handling timbers and filling. The square sets are filled with waste rock from the hanging wall, sorted from the ore, from development work, or from the level above. As a rule, little timber is recovered. The examples include the Butte district, Mother Lode of California, Bunker Hill & Sullivan, Hecla, and Morning mines.

"A very conductive zone was revealed in 1977 and 1978 by magnetotelluric (MT) measurements carried out near Ste-Mathilde, 6 km northeast of La Malbaie . In order to identify the structure causing the anomaly, thirty-five MT soundings were recorded in 1980 and 1981 on and around the conductor within a radius of4 km. Results confirmed that the conductor is of limited extent (less than 2 km by 0.4 km). The proposed model is a highly conductive vertical slab, the top of which is within 200 m from the surface. At a depth of approximately 825 m this structure joins a conductive layer which extends to the northwest but not to the southeast. The large conductivities and the depths involved can only be explain ed by a fractured zone flooded with electrolytic solutions, by graphite veins or by metallic mineralization (sulphides). The former seems to be the most likely hypothesis because an EW fault running across this zone could have allowed percolation of water and the leaching of disseminated pyrite out of a mylolisthenite filling the fault.IntroductionLa Malbaie is located 130 km northeast of Quebec City on th e North Shore o f the St. Lawrence River (Fig. I). Four major groups o f rocks have been mapped in this area: charnockitic rocks to the west , granitic rocks in the north east and southeast, gneiss and pegmatites northwest and south of La Malbaie , and Paleozoic sediments in the Clermont-La Malbaie Valley and along the shore of the St. Lawrence River (Rondot, 1966). Two major features dominate the structure of the region: Logan ' s line , a major thrust fault beneath the St. Lawrence which separates the Grenville Province to the north from the Appalachian regime to the south, and the Charlevoix Crater , a large Paleozoic impact crater that created an almost perfect annula r structure centred on Mont des Eboulements (Rondot, 1970). Ste-Mathilde is a village lying 6 km northeast of La Malbaie, just outside the ring-like graben zone caused by readjustments after meteorite impact. The survey area spreads over a granite body which is more than 2 km long and 0.6 km wide, surrounded by a wide migmatite zone which is injected by many bodies of pegmatite, the latter likely related to the granite body (Fig. 2). A zone of leptynites lies west of the area. An east-west trending fault (FA1) related to the Charlevoix Crater runs mid -way across the survey area; a second parallel fault (FA2) south of FAI separates the gneissic rocks from the Paleozoic sediments. The overburden is usually thin with outcrops frequently encountered except for the centre of the survey are a where 10 m of glacial sediments are expected (E. Gaucher, 1982, personal communication)."

Mineral commodity prices are subject to volatility over both the short and longer run – driving fluctuating operating margins for mining companies over time. Such market dynamics influence mine operating decisions depending on the interplay of company-specific and mineral market factors. The company factors include corporate financial strength and price-risk management strategy, as well as mining practices and methods at the operation level. The critical mineral market factor is the price of the ex-mine product. This results from underlying microeconomic and macroeconomic root-causes pertaining to mineral supply and demand, in addition to the activities of financial participants within commodity markets.Significant changes in commodity prices of an extended duration, either up or down, remain the principal influence upon mine economics – and therefore on mining practices too. Accurate and precise forecasting of commodity prices (and of relevant exchange rates) continues to prove elusive both to mineral economists and market analysts. Thus, at any given point in time, there are often widely differing price forecasts available for both the relevant commodity and currency. Companies as a result are unclear how to respond in practical operating terms to such price-side uncertainty – other than to manage incremental capital and operating expenditure. Typical company – and industry financier – responses to the difficulty in predicting future mineral commodity prices are to take measures to manage uncertainties in mining project revenues and costs. These operating practices are prudent – yet come at an economic cost: that is, lost revenue and margin opportunity is inevitable in any such system not easily capable of responding to price volatility in the market. The mine of the future will seek to capture this lost economic opportunity. WTHIN the next month all members of the Institute will be given an opportunity to vote for a new President, two Vice-Presidents, and five Directors. All of the candidates nominated by the official committee are well known to certain groups of the Institute membership but a brief record of their professional lives will be given here for the information of those that will vote. Not since 1927, when Everette DeGolyer guided the destinies of the Institute, has a member of the Petroleum Division been a candidate for President. John Meston Lovejoy has been a Director since 1930, and a Vice-President as well for the last year: In the three years 1932-4 lie was also chairman of the Admissions Committee. Dir. Lovejoy graduated from the Columbia School of Mines in 1911, just before lie was 22 years old, and began his professional career as a copper miner at Chuquicamata. Chile. Silver and gold mining later claimed his % attention, and it was not until 1914 that lie gut into the oil business, as geologist for the Standard Oil Co. of N. Y. This took hint to China and he later worked for the company in Wyoming. In 1917 lie joined the Army where lie rose to be captain of Field Artillery. Upon his return to the United States he went to work for the Amerada Petroleum Co., of which he later became vice-president and general manager, with headquarters in Tulsa. Since coining to New York he has been president of the Petroleum Bond & Share Cu.. and is currently president of the Seaboard Oil Co.

The present work has been done in an endeavor to correlate and complete the data on the constitution of alloys of zinc with other common metals, dealing exclusively, however, with the zinc-rich alloys in which the zinc content is between 90 and 100 per cent. This investigation has included the systems lead-zinc, cadmium-zinc, iron-zinc, copper-zinc, aluminum-zinc, nickel-zinc, manganese-zinc, cobalt-zinc, tin-zinc, and magnesium-zinc. The important ternary system zinc-lead-cadmium and the zinc corners of other ternary systems have been investigated in connection with this work but will not be dealt with here. Zinc does not form a single homogenous zinc-rich solid solution over any considerable range of concentration with any of the metals mentioned. A limited range of solid solubility is said, by previous investigators, to occur in several cases and certain effects on the properties of zinc are attributed (with varying degrees of consistency among different writers) to the presence of certain other metals dissolved in zinc. The increasing use of rolled zinc and the possibilities offered by zinc as a casting alloy in certain fields have made it essential to determine precisely these equilibrium relationships. In carrying out this investigation reliance was placed chiefly on two methods, conductivity measurements and microscopic analysis. The first method proved valuable in determining the existence and extent of solid solubility. The second method stands alone as a means of determining structural characteristics and supplements the first method in the measurement of solid solubility. The scleroscopic hardness of all conductivity specimens was measured partly for its value from the point of view of mechanical properties and partly as a check on the conductivity curves in indicating the limits of solid solubility. No hardness curves are included in this paper, for in no case were they important in arriving at the constitution of any system. For more than 100 years, the Republic of Chile has been one of the leading copper-producing countries of the world. Between 1877 and 1880 Chile accounted for over 50 pet of total world copper production. Today it has the world's largest known reserves of copper ore and a capability of producing over 600,000 tons per year. This capacity can and will be increased as the world demand for copper grows steadily during the remaining years of this century. The Potrerillos mine of Andes Copper Mining Co., a subsidiary of The Anaconda Co., was developed in the rugged, high Cordilleras in the early 1920's, and the townsite, concentrator, leaching plants, smelter, railroad, power and port facilities were completed so that it came into full production in 1927. Since then and until the closing o f the mine in June of last year, 1,762,192 tons o f copper were produced.

Cement industry relies heavily on the control of large volume of raw materials in the proximity of plant operations for clinker and cement manufacturing. These mineral resources are perhaps considered as ?low-profile? (mostly comprise limestone's, clays, marls and sands), but their availability, accessibility and suitability ? the later with respect to chemistry, mineralogical and physical characters ? are factors of paramount importance and may largely affect production cost and plant productivity. The combination of scarcity of good quality raw materials deposits and the growing environmental concerns have challenged the cement producers towards sustainability and the responsible exploitation of natural resources. In open pit mining and quarrying, the evaluation of mineral resources vs. handling of the non-usable overburden and other off-spec materials directly affects the medium to long-term production planning, quality control practices and environmental management. It is a general trend for many cement producers and a usual case for a number of Titan Cement plants worldwide, that redesign of quarry pits is necessary not only for stability purposes but also as a result of environmental constraints and emerging issues. The material reserves then have to be re-evaluated in the light of the new final pit design, safety distances from houses, other infrastructure and Law restrictions and according to criteria of safety of operations, reduction of environmental impacts, pit optimisation and proper future reclamation. The paper discusses the case of three active quarries of Usje Cement Plant, in Skopje (Macedonia), namely Usje (marl), Goverlevo (lime-stone) and Ljubosh (sand), where a large campaign of redesign and evaluation of recoverable reserves and the needs in rehabilitation took place in 2004. Technical and environmental issues and criteria are presented in the form of master plans and the highlights of the first attempts to propose and apply a reclamation scheme are discussed, by also examining alternative solutions for each quarry area. Finally, the 2005 progress in applying changes to the design of benches and pit layout, as well as experiences gained, are discussed.

The Jianchaling gold deposit is located about 1200 km south west of Beijing in central China. The deposit was discovered in 1988 by the Northwestern Geological Exploration Bureau (711 Exploration Team). Sino Gold Limited, an Australian based company, developed the mine in 1998 and is currently operating a 1000 t per day underground mine, producing about 80 000 ounces of gold per year. The pre-mine resource for Jianchaling was 1.6 million tonnes at 9.85 g/t gold. The deposit occurs within the east-west trending Mesozoic Qinling-Dabie orogenic belt formed during the Yanshanian Orogeny. In the Jianchaling region, gold mineralisation is primarily hosted by regional west-northwest to east-southeast striking faults, the most important of which, the reverse sinistral F145 fault, hosts the larger gold deposits including Jianchaling. At the mine scale, the most important zone of mineralisation is localised within a shallowly north dipping dilation on the F145 fault. Proterozoic dolomite forms the hangingwall and serpentinite and talc schist the footwall to the fault. Within the footwall, serpentinite is the most important host rock to mineralisation. Initial alteration involves replacement of serpentine to dolomite ¦ pyrite, talc to ankerite ¦ pyrite, and magnetite and chromite to pyrite, the latter locally through a transitional hematite phase. Proximal to feeder structures, the carbonate minerals have undergone partial dissolution and replacement to quartz. Gold is related to arsenean pyrite and marcasite rimming and replacement of early-formed pyrite, and associated with iron release during the processes of dolomitisation, silicification and carbonate dissolution.

"Production of explosives for industrial use in,the United States during 1934 continued the upward trend begun in 1933 from the low-level output of 1932, and the output in 1934 was only slightly less than in 1931.Reports to the United Stated Bureau of Mines from companies engaged in the manufacture of industrial explosives showed that the quantity of explosives manufactured in the United States and sold during 1934 for use within the various States was 314,767,922 pounds - 23 percent more than in 1931.Production during 1934 included 39,207,845 pounds of permissible explosives 5 206,625,027 pounds of high explosives other than permissibles, and,68,935,050 pounds of black blasting powder of which 37,192,700 pounds were in granular form and 31,742,350 pounds in pellet form. These figures represent an increase over 1933 of 15.6 percent for permissible explosives, 30.9 percent for other high explosive, and 7.4 percent for black powder.Coal-mining operations were the chief consumers of permissible explosives; 99 percent of the total output in 1934 was used, in coal mines. The proportion used by bituminous mines was 59 percent and by anthracite mines 40 percent. Coal mining was likewise the principal consumer of black blasting powder, taking 88 percent of the total sales during 1934; of this proportion, bituminous mines received 78 percent and anthracite mines between 9 and 10 percent. Consumers of high explosives other than permissibles were more varied; the reports showed that 11 percent of the total quantity sold was for coal mining, 22 percent for metal mining, 17 percent for quarrying and nonmetallic-mineral mining, 46 percent for railway and other construction work, and 4 percent for all other purposes."

THE conditions that make necessary the mechanical ventilation of the Butte mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. are due to a number of causes, all of which are incidental to the depth at which mining operations are now carried on. The main object to be accomplished, of course, is the reduction of the temperature and humidity of the air in the working places. Ventilation fans, both surface and underground, have been used for many years, but increasing depth has made the problem much more difficult. Further improvement in both ventilation equipment and methods, therefore, became necessary; and it is the purpose of this paper to describe the work planned and done under the improvement program. The mines of the district have been frequently described in various technical publications, so a description is unnecessary here. From a mine-ventilation viewpoint, compared with coal-mine ventilation systems, the problem is complicated by the fact that the workings to be ventilated are situated on a large number of steeply dipping veins which frequently intersect and are faulted, and also by the fact that the extent, or existence, of orebodies is not definitely known in advance of actual development work. For these reasons ventilation work cannot be planned in advance of actual operations, nor can such regular systems of ventilation as are used in working the more uniform and continuous bodies of coal be developed. When operations are conducted at a normal rate, about 10,000 miners are employed on two shifts, so that about 5000 men will be underground at one time. But as ventilation is necessary to reduce high temperature and humidity due, mainly, to natural causes, the quantity of air per man per minute is not a governing consideration in determining ventilation requirements. Most important among the numerous sources of heat and humidity in the mines are : heat generated during decay of mine timber; heat and humidity given off by mine rock and water; heat generated by oxidation of sulfide minerals; heat given off by electrical equipment; heat generated by mine fires (in certain localities).

TUBES may be produced by a large number of forming processes, the most common of which will be discussed analytically in this paper. In no case will the stress analysis for any given tube producing process be derived formally for where such analyses are available, they may be referred to readily. Rather, emphasis will be placed on the interpretation of the theory of the different processes, few of which are developed to a state that will allow rigorous mathematical analyses, in an attempt to give a rational description of the effects of the different variables involved in each method. Tube producing methods can be divided into two groups: Those used to form shells, and those used to further work these shells into a shape more suitable for their final use. Among the first group are included roll piercing, extrusion and cupping for seamless shells, and bending with welding for welded tubes. The re-forming processes include sinking, drawing with a plug, and drawing with a rod. Only the plastic forming operations will be discussed here; other forming processes such as casting shells will not be considered. PRODUCTION OF SHELLS Shells for Seamless Tubing Piercing: The extremely important process of forming an axial hole in a billet by oblique rolling never has been analyzed satisfactorily, although a certain amount of experimental work relating to this process has been conducted. There are a number of factors that make piercing difficult to analyze; one of these is the fact that piercing is not a problem in plasticity, but one in fracturing, and the laws of fracturing are even less well understood than those of plasticity. If, however, it is assumed that fracturing occurs on a surface as a result of tensile stresses acting normal to this surface, piercing can be analyzed qualitatively by examining the stresses established in the oblique rolling process. To determine the origin of the tensile stresses that are thought to effect piercing, it will be necessary to know the angular relationships between the maximum stresses that are established in piercing. These angles quite frequently can be determined in a plastic deformation process by an examination of the deformed product. For example, consider the stresses established when a tensile test is conducted on a rectangular cross-sectional specimen of pearlitic steel. When stretched, this material first flows plastically, exhibiting the well-known yield jog on a stress-strain curve. The formation of the slip areas that give rise to the yield jog can be detected during the straining, since these flowed areas cause depressions on the specimen surfaces which can be seen if the surfaces are polished highly. The plastically strained areas also can be found after the specimen has been stretched to a strain not exceeding the yield jog, by sectioning the test piece and. etching these sections with Fry's etch.
