"The use of large AG/SAG mills in the mineral industry has been on the rise recently due to a significant reduction in the capital and operating costs for achieving significant increases in plant throughputs. The major reason for downtimes in these mills is the time taken for the replacement of broken or worn liners. This loss of “availability” of these units has a significant impact on the productivity of these plant operations. The ability to predict liner life time and its evolving shape could help to optimize these comminution operations. In the past decades, various models have been proposed to estimate liner wear rate, but because of their empirical nature they could only be used within certain limited operating conditions. In this research, a phenomenological model which could predict the liner wear rate was proposed and tested. This model considers parameters such as; operating conditions, liner hardness, pressure on the lifter, and, relative velocity of particles and mill shell. Data from industrially measured liner profiles were taken during the liner life time at the Sarcheshmeh and the Gol-E-Ghohar SAG mills to provide a solid base to calibrate and validate the model. The comparison of the model predictions with the actual measurements of the liner wear rate showed that the results were in a good agreement at both, the Sarcheshmeh (R2=0.94), and the Gol-E-Ghohar (R2=0.97) concentrators.INTRODUCTIONAG/SAG mills are one of the most important technologies in the mineral processing industry in the recent decades. The “Availability” of these units in a plant operation is one of the most important economic parameter for evaluating their performance. The major reason for the downtime of these mills affecting their “availability”, is the time required to change worn or broken liners (Yahyaei, Banisi, & Hadizadeh, 2009; Maleki-Moghaddam, Yahyaei, & Banisi, 2012). The knowledge about the magnitude and profile of liner wear not only enables more accurate liner life estimation to prevent unwanted interruptions of the SAG milling in mineral processing plants and more strategically plan the scheduled mill outages for liner changes. It also could provide key information needed to select an appropriate liner design (Yahyaei et al., 2009; Rezaeizadeh, Fooladi, Powell, & Weerasekara, 2010a)."

In the blasting industry, many different techniques are used to estimate and examine the effects of varying explosives and blast designs on the breakage of a rock mass. The overall objective is to find a cost-minimized blasting solution that also conforms to the legal and environmental concerns related to blasting. A major drawback to current blasting methods is the inability to account for "caprock," or a thick overlying layer found in sedimentary rocks that creates large amounts of oversize blasted material, especially on the top of a muck pile. This can lead to underestimating oversize in shots with massive top layers. A better fundamental understanding of blasting processes with caprock is required.

This paper gives the results: first,, of a research into the somewhat extensive literature of titanium; and second, of a series of original tests upon the effect of titanium on iron castr ings. New investigations have also been made upon the effect of titanium on steel, but I hope to treat this subject in an independent paper at some later date, and, therefore, will not discuss the experiments in detail here. The combined results of this study, which extended over a period of more than two years, can be briefly summarized as follows : 1. Steel or cast-iron, in which the titanium is properly proportioned, and which has been properly treated, is improved in strength, toughness, and durability against wear, such 'as, for example, the wear of railroad-rails, of steel and chilled-iron rolls, car-wheels, etc. 2. These improvemerits seem to be caused, not so much by the direct effect of titanium on the metal, as by its cleansing influence in removing harmful impurities, such as oxygen and oxides, nitrogen, occluded slags, and perhaps also sulphur. It appears also to reduce segregation, which would contribute to the same end. 3. In order that its effects may be fully realized, the treatment of steel or iron with titanium must be correctly performed. There are a few simple, but essential, details to be observed; if they are neglected, the best results cannot be expected. To illustrate by an example: A series of tests on cast-iron

The Rawley property is located in the Kerber Creek mining-district, Saguache county, Colorado, at an elevation of 10,600 ft. (See sketch-map, Fig. 1.) Ore was found in this vicinity as early as 1880, and claims covering a large area were located and in many instances patented. The ores, however, being of comparatively low grade, and the nearest railway station, Villa Grove, being some 20 miles away, it is extremely doubtful whether any considerable amount of ore was ever handled at a profit. It is safe to say that several hundred thousand dollars were spent (a large part in building mills) previous to 1902-03. About that time a very capable promoter gathered together a group of these claims and interested some New York people, who had had no previous mining experience, in the purchase of these claims. Following the organization of a company, this promoter became General Manager. As often happens under such conditions, the first step was to erect a mill to treat 100 tons per day. It may not be fair to this enterprise to say that the failure which followed might have been foretold, simply on general principles, but this much is certain—the water supply fluctuates in the course of a season through a wide range and for a considerable portion of the year was inadequate to run this mill at capacity. Further, it is currently reported that some of the mill foundations were placed on ice. However true this statement may be, it is a fact that, when first inspected by us, many of the belts in the mill were held on'their pulleys by means of idlers. A shut-down followed, with a material re-adjustment of interests, at which time we became consulting engineers for the company.

The LeadtZinc Concentrator at Mount lsa treats all the lead-zinc-silver ore from the Mount Isa Mine and some of the ore from the Hilton Mine. This concentrator was commissioned in June 1966 and total lead-zinc-silver ore treatment was transferred from the Mount rsa's original No 1 Concentrator in May 1967. Plant capacity is around 5 x 106 t/y.There have been three phases of major plant modifications since commissioning:1. replacement and upgrading of the flotation section in 1979; 2. upgrading of the crushing plant and installation of a heavy medium hydrocyclone plant in 1983 for ore preconcentration, and; 3. doubling ball milling capacity and a further upgrading of the flotation section in 1992.Other developments have included the installation of flotation columns and Jameson cells.The evolution of milling practice since 1955 has been reported by Davey and Slaughter (1970), Bartrum, Dobrowolski and Schache (1977), Fiedler and Munro (1984) and Espinosa-Gomez el al (1989).Lead concentrate is smelted in Mount Isa while zinc concentrate and bulk concentrate (locally called Low Grade Middlings or LGM) are railed to Townsville and shipped to custom electrolytic zinc plants and ISP smelters.

During several years of operation in Europe, South Africa and other locations, the Tri-Flo process has demonstrated substantial improvements in dense-medium dynamic-separation systems. The reasons for this improvement are: • a high-sharpness separation due to the multistage system and the application of new concepts in the design of the regeneration circuit and in the control of the medium Theology, and • the possibility of performing two cuts at different densities using a single separation device and a single regeneration circuit. This paper discusses the above points in detail with particular reference to the multistage technology (based on the circuit analysis theory) and to the control of the medium rheology (based on recent work in the modeling and simulation of the rheological behavior of dense suspensions). Concerning the multidensity separation, information is given on the new three-stage separator where the high-density separation is performed by the first stage and the low-density separation is performed by the second and third stages. This configuration (already realized in two operating plants) was selected because no particular sharpness was required at the high-density separation, while high sharpness was required at the low-density separation. However, the configuration can be inverted or a fourth stage can be added (at very low additional cost) to provide two stages for each separating density. The importance of achieving a high sharpness separation is related to minerals (industrial minerals in particular) where the density difference of the phases to be separated is very low (as in processing of lithium ores, feldspar- and others). Information is provided on plants operating in South Africa and Canada, for the beneficiation of lithium minerals and on a plant under construction in Italy for the beneficiation of feldspar. Finally, the importance of making the separation at two densities is emphasized with particular reference to coal; i.e., producing a low-ash premium coal and recovering, in the middling, a by-product without losing heating value. Also, very important for some minerals is the production of a high-grade concentrate (at the first stage) suitable for sending directly to metallurgy (e.g., chromite ores) and the production of a low-grade concentrate that can be further treated. In this way, a higher overall recovery of the valuable mineral can be achieved, and, at the same time, a reduction of the treatment costs can be obtained. All of the above applications were once considered impossible.

Low-density explosives (LDE) have applications where the explosive properties of ANFO are not well matched to the rock. In particular, rocks that are of low strength and/or well fragmented in situ. Dyno Nobel Asia Pacific (DNAP) has developed a new LDE, BlastLiteTM, which can be used as a cost-effective replacement for ANFO with excellent detonation characteristics. The product is based on ANFO with the addition of a bulking agent. The key to the product lies in the ability of the bulking agent to form a homogeneous blend with ANFO without the need for any emulsion matrix to bind the product together. This results in an LDE of low cost and high weight strength compared to existing commercial LDE products. The product has been trialled extensively and has proven to provide results that are equivalent to, and often better than, ANFO with reduced powder factors. This paper details the laboratory development and results of field trials for DNAPÆs LDE solution: BlastLite.

This paper presents information on the use of a new propping agent (malleable aluminum particles) which has been used successfully for producing high-conductivity fractures. The conductivity of a packed fracture depends on the width of the fracture as well as the permeability of the propping material. It is significant that the flow capacity of a propped crack is often increased many fold by propping the crack with a sparse distribution of particles. However, the flow capacity of a sparsely propped crack can be limited by two phenomena: (I) crushing of the propping particles, and (2) embedment of the propping particles in the formation walls. Malleable aluminum particles exhibit interesting properties which tend to overcome these limitations. As high loads are applied to the particles they will deform slightly, rather than shattering. The deformation results in a greater bearing area against the formation wall. This reduces the stress on the particle and reduces particle penetration into the formation. The behavior of aluminum particles under load and the bearing capacities of serveral formation rocks have been measured in the laboratory. By properly using these data, as explained in this paper, the flow capacities of aluminum-propped cracks can be calculated for a variety of conditions. Aluminum particles have been used successfully in the field to prop fractures. Where high-conductivity fractures were needed, the aluminum-propped fractures have given greater well stimulation than could have been expected for conventional fracturing processes. INTRODUCTION The purpose of a hydraulic fracture treatment is to create a conductive channel from the wellbore out into the oil or gas formation. The word conductive is emphasized because we believe that the fracture conductivity (flow capacity) is one of the most important factors influencing fracturing results. Previous papers have pointed out the additional well stimulation that can sometimes be achieved by increasing fracture conductivity. Several years ago, we investigated in some detail the effect of fracture conductivity on productivity increases to be expeced from vertical fractures. Both electrical analog and theoretical studies of unsteady-state flow behavior were made. A discussion of the electrical analog equipment and some of the results of the study were given in a previous paper' by Dyes, Kemp and Caudle. Further details were given recently by McGuire and Sikora.5 Fig. 1 shows the remarkable influence of relative fracture flow capacity and length on well stimulation. Briefly, the study indicates the following. 1. High-permeability formations require high-conductivity cracks for best results. 2. The longer the crack, the higher the fracture conductivity required for best results. 3. If the conductivity of the crack is very large compared to the formation (i.e., flow is not being limited by crack conductivity), then the longer the fracture, the better will be the results. Judging from recently published articles,1,314 there is current interest in methods for obtaining high fracture conductivities. Hence, we would like to present in this paper a discussion of a new fracture propping process (use of aluminum particle) which we have used successfully to obtain highly conductive fractures. There are several factors which influence the conductivity of a propped crack. Conventional fracturing techniques frequently result in a crack completely packed with fracturing sand. For such conditions, the crack conductivity is the product of the width of the packed fracture and the permeability of the propping material. It is significant that a large increase in conductivity sometimes can be obtained by propping with particles which are distributed sparsely (less than a

Computer simulation is a well accepted tool for modelling the behaviour of large and complex operating systems. It is a particularly useful technique in complex operations where there are multiple interactions between the inputs and outputs of various unit operations. It can be utilised during the early stages of a project as part of the business case definition phase or the early engineering phases, or alternatively to help understand the various options available in an upgrade or expansion. With the design of a new processing plant to handle a different ore type at Lihir Gold Limited (Lihir), there was concern that the existing conveying system could separately handle the increased tonnages. A simulation model was constructed which allowed Lihir to examine the impact on the conveying system of the new process plant, as well as investigate the effect of different trucking options. As is often the case, once the simulation model was built, further understanding of the downstream bottlenecks was able to be investigated, including the sizing of critical equipment.

The Manto Verde copper mine (Atacama Region, Chile) is due to go into production in 1996. It will produce 40 000 tonne/year of copper cathode by heap leaching/SX-EW. Mineralogical studies were undertaken in conjunction with the metallurgical testwork program to characterise the ore and its response to leaching by dilute sulphuric acid. The leachable copper mineralogy is dominated by the oxide copper minerals: brochantite and malachite with minor chrysocolla and atacamite. The gangue minerals include abundant orthoclase, specularite, quartz and chlorite with minor muscovite and trace smectite clay, calcite and limonite. The study showed that complete or partial decomposition of calcite, chlorite, smectite and wad consumed acid and generated solution impurities (Ca2+, Fe2+, Mg2+, A13+, K+, Si4+ and Mn4+2+ ). Although these were manageable at Manto Verde, their uncontrolled build-up could have affected the operation in several ways: the degradation of heap penneability and fonnation of crud in the SX plant from the precipitation of gypsum, goethite, colloidal silica and jarosite; and the entrainment of contaminated pregnant leach solution in the SX organic resulting in the transfer of impurities to the electrolyte and subsequent effects on cathode quality and electrowinning efficiency. In conclusion, process mineralogy played an important role in understanding and managing potential mineral-related problems in the heap leaching and SX-EW recovery of Manto Verde ore.

"Abstract -Vanadium mineralization occurs in oxide-rich horizons within the layered gabbro zones of the upper parts of the Bell River Complex, Matagami, Québec and the Lac Doré Complex, Chibougamau, Québec. The vanadium-rich horizons are well defined on the ground and in aeromagnetic surveys by their high magnetic susceptibility; consequently, magnetic susceptibility can be an indicator of vanadium mineralization. The main oxide minerals are ilmenite and titanian magnetite, containing 20% to 70% of volume and the ratio of titanian magnetite to ilmenite is relatively constant, ranging from about 1:1 to 2:1. Their sizes are less than 5 µm to greater than 1 mm to 2 mm, occurring as coarse- to medium-grained subhedral crystals intergrown with cumulate silicate minerals (plagioclase, pyroxene, etc.). Electron microprobe analyses indicate that the ilmenite grains are mineralogically and compositionally homogeneous and have low V contents (average 0.18% equivalent V2O5). In contrast, the titanian magnetite grains are inhomogeneous, consisting of trellisworks of ilmenite lamellae in Ti-poor, V-rich magnetite [less than 2 wt% TiO2, and 1.41% equiv. V2O5 (1.16% V2O3) for 20 analyses]. Thus, the magnetite is the principal ore mineral of vanadium; it hosts vanadium in the form of V3+, not V5+, as is commonly and erroneously reported. We have also devised a flowchart for the beneficiation of vanadium-titanium ores. Sommaire - La minéralisation de vanadium se trouve dans des horizons riches en minéraux oxydés de la partie supérieure des zones de gabbros lités des Complexes de la Rivière Bell, Matagami, Québec et du Lac Doré, Chibougamau, Québec. Des horizons riches en vanadium ont été bien définis sur le terrain et dans les levés aéromagnétiques par leur susceptibilité magnétique élevée; conséquemment, la susceptibilité magnétique est l’indicateur directe du contenu en vanadium. Les principaux minéraux oxydés sont l’ilménite et la magnétite titanifère, contenant 20% à 70% du volume et le rapport de magnétite titanifère à ilménite est relativement constant, allant d’environ 1:1 à 2:1. Leur dimension varie de 5 µm à plus grande que 1 mm à 2 mm, apparaissant sous forme de cristaux subidiomorphes, de grains grossiers à médiums, intercroissant avec la gangue silicatée (plagioclase, pyroxène, etc.) de la texture de cumulat. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Climax mine is located 161 km (100 miles) southwest of Denver on Fremont Pass astride the Con¬tinental Divide. Climax employs 2800 people to pro¬duce 42 670 t/d (47,000 stpd) of molybdenum ore. The Storke level, the main underground level, produces 19 970 t/d (22,000 stpd); the 600 level, the lowest ac¬tive underground area, produces 7260 t/d (8000 stpd); and the open pit presently produces 15 430 t/d (17,000 stpd), Fig. 1. A panel caving method is possible because of the favorable geology and geometry of the Climax ore body. Geology The Climax deposit is composed of three separate ore bodies formed in a massive Tertiary stockwork which penetrates Precambrian granites and schists. The ore bodies are elliptical in plan with overall dimensions of 914 x 1219 m (3000 x 4000 ft). In section the ore bodies are arcuate with an overall height of 457 m (1500 ft), although the depth is not firmly ascertained. Ore grade decreases rapidly into a highly siliceous cen¬tral core and more gradually toward the outer bounda¬ries of the deposit. The mineralization is relatively continuous in the ore zone and contains few dilution-causing waste inclusions. Molybdenite is contained in pre-ore fractures which were largely recemented during the three mineralization pulses. Postore fractures, with a spacing of a few inches to several meters (feet), render the deposit amenable to caving when it is undercut. The peripheral rock caves similarly to the ore, but the central core is competent and is difficult to cave. Caving Feasibility Successful caving action requires an undercut area of approximately 122 by 122 m (400 by 400 ft). When the undercut area exceeds this minimum distance, the arching effect is lost, and the ore column collapses. Ore extensions from the main cave area less than 122 m (400 ft) wide usually cannot be caved. Waste or low¬grade areas within the deposit can be left if they are large enough to carry weight around openings passing through them. Experience indicates that these areas should be over 30 m (100 ft) in length and width. Smaller unprofitable units of waste, such as postore dikes, are mined to avoid weight problems and result in ore dilution. Successful caving and ore recovery are dependent upon timely ore removal from the undercut zone because columns of immobile ore inhibit caving and concentrate weight onto the underlying workings. Climax experience indicates that a finger (drawpoint) spacing* averaging 10.4 m (34 ft) yields an excellent caving action and a 92.5% ore recovery at the estimated grade. The flotation behaviour of the Hilton ore of Mount Isa Mines has been examined in the presence of two collectors (sodium ethyl xanthate (Ex) and sodium diisobutyldithiophosphinate (3418A)) over a range of flotation Eh values and collector additions. Tests were also conducted in the absence of collector to determine the relative contributions of natural and self-induced floatability of the major minerals in the feed. In these tests the influence of metabisulphite on the self-induced floatability of the minerals was also determined. Attention focussed on optimising the selectivity of galena flotation. It is shown that the Hilton ore sample contained lower levels of naturally hydrophobic iron sulphide minerals than are generally contained in the Mount Isa lead-zinc ore. Furthermore, the self-induced floatability of galena was less than that exhibited by the galena in the Mount Isa lead-zinc ore. Sodium metabisulphite (MBS) reduced the self-induced flotation of galena but had no effect on the natural floatability of the iron sulphide minerals.

WHEN measuring ordinary temperatures, the instrument is generally placed in very close contact with the body the temperature of which is desired. However, if the temperature of the source is continually raised, a point is soon reached where no known substance will, in general, remain constant in any of its temperature-measuring properties if placed in direct contact with the source. Also, it is occasionally necessary to measure the temperature of a source that 'is so small or so situated that it would be very hard to bring the measuring instrument into direct contact with the source. When these conditions exist, advantage is taken of the well-known fact that all bodies, when at sufficiently high temperatures, send out radiation in amounts readily measurable. This radiation has been found to be related to the temperature. The temperatures of very hot bodies have probably always been judged by the color, or the brightness, of the light given off. With practice, one can estimate probably within 50° to 100° C. of the correct value. However, if judgment is left to the eye alone, very much larger errors are sometimes made, due to

IN the early days of mining in the Anthracite field, only the thicker and better seams of coal were mined, because of the limited mining and coal-cleaning facilities, therefore many of the thinner and less productive seams were permitted to remain unmined. With improvements in mining methods, the introduction of modem preparation plants, and the increased market demand for small-size coal, the thinner and more laminated seams have now become assets. In many instances these seams overlie the mined-out beds of the thicker and better seams, from which all recoverable coal was removed by the conventional breast-and-pillar method of mining. Some collieries in certain sections of the Anthracite field are now relying on these thinner and laminated seams. For the purpose of illustration, a large area in the Hickory Swamp-Ridge Basin of the western middle coal field has been selected, where as early as 1898 the No. 4, or Little Buck Mountain, seam was mined and pillars removed. The No. 5, or Buck Mountain, seam lying on a comparatively light pitch and with intervening strata of but 55 ft. of rock was not mined until 1935. Farther east, in the same basin the Nos. 8 and 9 seams, which are two splits of the Mammoth seam, have been mined and robbed and the workings have been abandoned since 1896. The overlying No. 9 ¾ seam, or the upper split of the Mammoth, and the No. 9 ¾ or 4-ft. seam remained virgin, with only an interval of 50 ft. of rock separating them, and with 40 to 50 ft. of rock strata separating the No. 9 ½ seam from the completely mined area of the Nos. 8 and 9 seams. These seams lie on a pitch of 45° on the south side of the basin and on 75° on the north side of the basin. Mining has been carried on in the 9 ½ and 9 ¾ seams for 3 years on both dips of the basin, for a distance of 3500 ft. In some sections the overlying strata of the thicker seams previously mined have settled without any apparent breaks in the upper strata, as indications have shown in the top split of the Mammoth; while in other areas the roof and bottom of this top split of the Mammoth have settled unevenly, thereby causing the bottom and roof to break into blocks. In attempting to mine over a large area of the No. 5 or Buck Mountain seam, a similar settlement has been encountered; the roof of the seam has been broken and a considerable amount of timbering has been necessary in order to make the mining of the seam possible. The conventional breast-and-pillar method, using shaker conveyors, has been used in the No. 5 seam, and a slant-breast method in the mining of Nos. 9 ½ and 9 ¾ seams. MOVEMENT on a fracture of irregular shape can cause local widening of the fissure and thereby offer freer channelways for circulation of ore-depositing solutions. This influence, coupled with large areas of wall rock available for reacting with ore solutions in brecciated and shattered ground can account for locally active deposition of metals and the resulting ore shoots. Such irregularities in the fracture system may be caused by local variations in the strength of rocks and by pre-existing lines of weakness, especially if these stand at favorable angles to certain components of the fracturing stress. Therefore correct interpretation of the mechanics of fracturing should permit deductions as to structurally favorable places on unexplored portions of the vein system. INTRODUCTION IT has long been recognized that movement on a curved or irregular fault surface is capable of separating the walls in certain portions of the fault, but until very recent years the importance of this mechanism as a factor in localizing ore shoots has escaped proper recognition. A short time ago W. H. Newhouse' presented a careful analytical study of displacements and their corresponding open spaces. For reasons that will be discussed later, it frequently happens that portions of the vein which are favorably oriented are not merely wider but also richer than the average. In many cases the widening with its accompanying richness coincides with very minor changes in the dip or strike of the vein, irregularities that commonly escape notice unless the vein is mapped in detail and a careful geometrical analysis made. While the relationship between the width of the vein and the changes in dip or strike has been recognized as a matter of observation, the irregularities have been accepted as more or less the result of accident. There has been very little effort except in isolated cases to find out the causes of these changes in dip or strike. Yet it is clear that if the causes can be recognized and expressed in terms of geologic structure the geologist will know where to look for repetitions of these favorable conditions either on extensions of the same vein or on adjoining veins. The fundamental problem concerning the fracture of both crystalline and noncrystalline solids is the divergence between the actua1 and the theorcticallY computed fracture stresses; the stress required for fracture, computed from the forces between atoms, is many times that actually observed with commcrcinlly available materials. Computatiolls have been made,,2 indicating that the theoretical fracture stress should be from 100 to 1000 times that actually observed. There are other incidental problems that have arisen, perhaps the most importallt of which is the problem of size effect often observed in the measurement of the fracture stress of non-metallic solids, such as glass. Another effect conccrns the relation between deformation and the stress required for fracture, Experiments recently made with pearlitic steels indicate that the tensile fracture stress increases with increasing tensile deformation and decreases with increasing prior com-pressive deformation, This marked ani-sotropy of the effect of deformation on the fracture stress is in contrast with the essential isotropy of the flow stress. Early experiments on rock salt crystals by Joffe, et al.3 have illustrated the effect of tensile strain in increasing the tensile stress required for fracture. A consistent theory must be constructed that will explain not only the divergence, of the measured fracture stress from the theoretical value, the size effect, and the ergence of deformation; but will also explain and predict the effects of combined stress, of temperature, of strain rate, and of metallurgical structure. With respect to this last variable, it has now been relatively well established that the carbide particle is the clement of structure controlling the fracture of steels. In steels carbide particles vary in shape from plates to spheroids. It has been found that not only docs the magnitude Of the Fracture stress depend upon the size and shape of these particles. but also its dcpendencc upon strain is affected by changes in 'hap' an' size Or the particles. The precipitate resulting from the age hardening Of duralumin also modifies the fracture stress of this alloy. Nonmetallic inclusions greatly lower the fracture stress of all metals. The magnitude of the lowering depends 0' the size and shape of the included particles. In glass, the major source of the low fracture stress has been fairly conclusively demonstrate' by Griffith4 '0 arise from real flaws or cracks present in the material. He showed that the stress concentration at the end of a defect was of suficient magnitude to raise the stress at this location to a value comparable with the theoretical strength Of the material. If the cracks were reduced in size, Griffith showed that the observed fracture slrength the by virtue Of the decrease in stress concentration. He also pointed out that cracks disposed perpendicularly to the applied tensile stress would be more effective in lowering the fracture

Barometric pressure and its variation in deep underground workings have a considerable effect on ventilation conditions. Pressure changes which create transient states of air flow and air parameters in workings are especially significant. Experiments have shown that pressure changes have a remarkable effect on air parameters at mine workings and hence, attempts to evaluate the scale of this phenomenon are of value. Continuous monitoring of the barometric pressure on the surface of mines allows for the detection of changes in pressure which undoubtedly influence alternations of pressure in the underground areas of mines. Very important factors are the internal disturbances of pressure within a mine ventilation system due to variable conditions of fan operation and the operation of a winding machine where a mine cage moving in a shaft causes piston like disturbances. Local transient disturbances caused by temporary opening/closing of air stoppings due to personnel or underground transport traffic are of importance. The results of over two years of observations of barometric pressure and its influence on pressure variation in underground mine workings are presented in this paper. The observations were possible through the installation of pressure sensors at selected points of the downcast shaft in a mine. Of interest are the observations of the transient states of pressure and other air parameters caused by emergency fan stoppage, movement of a mine cage and changes due to the opening of air stoppings. Data acquired during experiments of opening and closing air stoppings were used for the validation of a flow model in a long working.

New Zealand Steel Mining Limited operates two independent sand mining operations on the West Coast of the North Island of New Zealand. (Fig. 1)Waikato North Head 30km south of Auckland supplies ironsand concentrate as the raw feed for New Zealand Steel's works at Glenbrook, and Taharoa 70km further south, exports ironsand concentrate to Japan. Taharoa uses two sets of six low pressure Warman centrifugal pumps in series to load bulk ore carriers 3km off shore through two underwater pipelines.Waikato North Head delivers the ironsand to Glenbrook l8kms through a 200mm ID buried pipeline using two stages of high pressure positive displacement (HPPD) pumping.A high level of operating and maintenance expertise has been developed since commissioning the two systems which are proving to be reliable, efficient and of minimal impact environmentally.
