The orientation and location of the hydraulic legs are two very important parameters for the design of shield supports in longwall mining. Studies have shown that leg orientations and locations of a support determine the magnitude, orientation and location of the resultant support resistance which in turn affects the efficiency of the support and the ability to prevent premature roof falls in the face area. Therefore, there is a need to determine the best combination of orientation and location of the hydraulic legs for each type of shield support under various geological conditions. This paper attempts to evaluate, first, the individual role of each parameter (orientation or location) and then to determine their integrating functions in terms of ground control employing finite element analysis. Three types of shield support (2-leg and 4-leg shields and 4-leg chock shield) with various combination of the parameters are simulated and their effects are discussed. The optimum design for each parameter for each support type under various geological conditions is also discussed and recommended.

Increasing concern with the emission of sulphur dioxide from smelters and roasters has caused renewed interest in processes which can use waste sulphur dioxide, such as the sulphation of nickel laterite ores. The process described here proposes to by-pass the production of sulphuric acid and react laterite directly with a sulphur dioxide containing atmosphere. A thermodynamic analysis identified operating windows in which nickel sulphate forms while iron oxide (the major impurity in most laterite ores) remains stable. The initial assumptions included unit activity of all species except nickel oxide. The lowest possible nickel oxide activity (while maintaining selectivity) increased with increasing temperature, indicating that selective sulphation is favoured by low temperatures. The temperature of interest was found to be between 500 and 800¦C. Calculations show that a feed gas containing ten per cent SO2, five per cent 02, balance N2 requires a temperature greater than 650¦C for selective sulphation of nickel. Laboratory experiments showed that the assumption of unit activity of ferric sulphate was unrealistic above about 680¦C due most likely to the formation of solid solutions which decreased the ferric sulphate activity. Results are presented which illustrate the limiting equilibrium sulphur trioxide partial pressures at 700 and 730¦C below which selective sulphation occurs. Cobalt extraction was usually between 80 and 95 per cent under conditions yielding selective sulphation, whilst nickel extraction was about 50 to 75 per cent depending on temperature and choice of upper limit of iron extraction. An operating diagram is presented for a limonite ore and shows that the optimum reaction conditions are 680¦C and an input gas containing 20 per cent SO2. Under these conditions nickel, cobalt and iron extractions are 73, 95 and two per cent respectively.

THE work to be described was undertaken at various periods from 1937 to 1939 on the Busia gold field, in the eastern province of Uganda. It was decided to examine the possibility of reef prospection by the resistivity method, for it was not known how far the usually disintegrated nature of most reefs in the ubiquitous laterite near the surface would obscure indications obtained by resistivity traverses. The work at the commencement was therefore largely experimental, but the results obtained thereby were satisfactory, and a survey was started at the Government closed area at Amonikakine. With the limited time and resources at the writer's disposal, it was not possible to complete the survey to his satisfaction or to follow up exhaustively all the geophysical indications, but some of the results of the experimental work and the survey were of sufficient interest to be worth recording; in particular the relation between the width of reef, electrode separation and shape of the curve, and the interference effect of constant separation curves over zones of float are significant and useful. Three new veins were located, but only one contained sufficient gold to warrant detailed prospection. This was called the Geophysical reef, and was uncovered over a strike distance of 1140 ft., and there are indications that it extends over a distance of 1990 ft. These results and the recommendations consequent therefrom were embodied in a special report to the Uganda Geological Survey. HISTORY OF THE FIELD The Busia field is in the southeastern corner of Uganda near the Kenya-Uganda border, and is about 17 miles north of the northeastern corner of Lake Victoria. Gold was first discovered in the area in the stream beds by Davies1,2 in 1932. Subsequently numerous small alluvial claims were worked by prospectors and the area was prospected for reef by a company for periods varying from three to nine months, but was finally abandoned, as the results were considered unfavorable. Further prospecting by the Geological Survey in 1935-1936 under Davies3 and later under the writer4 uncovered three reefs with sufficient gold values to be of economic interest. These were finally taken over by a company known as Borderland Syndicate, which still owns the area, and from September 1937 to the end of 1941 about 13,000 oz. of gold was extracted from reefs of the area proved by the Geological Survey. Opencast mining operations are still proceeding (February 1943). The Amonikakine area lies to the immediate north of that of Borderland Syndicate. A certain amount of prospecting had been done when the writer started work there. As a result of his report, this area was taken over by another syndicate, but little further work was accomplished before it ceased operating because of difficulties of wartime working.

The mining of mineral sands in coastal aquifers is often constrained by other land use conflicts and inappropriate controls imposed through a lack of understanding of environmental interactions and processes. The recent experience with the Tea Gardens mining operation illustrates how increasing our knowledge and understanding leads to more effective management of environmental problems. As well as a source of heavy minerals, the Tea Gardens sand bed serves as a town water supply source. From past experience it was believed that mining could cause undesirable increases in dissolved iron concentrations in the aquifer, but the reasons and mechanisms for this phenomenon were not clear. A water monitoring program was therefore designed for the mining operation which was aimed at protecting the water supply borefield from any detremental effects. After one year the results of the monitoring program were assessed in the light of new knowledge and understanding of iron hydrochemistry. It was found that the existing program was not achieving some of its major aims, and was therefore modified to a more effective and cost efficient program.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed the coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) to aid in ground control. This paper describes the application of the CMRR at four coal mines operated by a major U.S. coal company. The mines are widely separated geographically, and cover a wide variety of geologic conditions and mining methods. The study found that the CMRR was a useful predictor of roof performance. In mines where the CMRR varied, and other parameters held constant, roof falls were associated with low CMRR values. Important similarities in roof performance were found in mines with similar CMRR values, despite radically different geologic environments. The analyses also indicated that statistics can be used to evaluate ground control performance. For these mines, a "roof fall probability" can be estimated from the CMRR and the intersection span. The sampling of waste materials containing copper, lead and tin has taken on a new significance within recent years, and is of increasing importance, on account of the entry of some of the copper refineries into this field and the tendency towards consolidations among the smelters. In the past, such material was sold on the basis either of a rough or grab sample or of casual inspection of the lot. The two principal sources of this waste are the processes of fabrication and the scrapping of automobile, electrical, plumbing, railroad and other equipment. In both cases much material can be sorted, salvaged and sold by classification and grade to be melted "as is" or with the addition of new or virgin metal. The increasing care in classifying exercised in the large manufacturing plants tends to increase the proportion of this usable scrap; on the contrary, the increasing use of more complex and special non-ferrous alloys tends to make sorting and grading more difficult in turnings, borings, clippings, etc., and consequently is making sampling of more moment. In tin, lead, aluminum, and zinc furnace by-products such as ashes, drosses, skimmings, etc., the trade practice of evaluation has not varied much. For instance, tin drosses, battery lead, and aluminum skimmings are ordinarily sold on what is called "metallic button" or "metallic recovery" or ('metallic yield." Copper and lead waste, however, is being sold more and more on actual copper and lead contents based on sample and chemical analyses. This paper will be devoted chiefly to the sampling of materials suitable only for refining and recovery of one or more of the metals present. The methods described are often based on the fact that but one metal, such as copper, is to be paid for. The loss of volatile constituents in melting does not appreciably affect the final copper result, as the "after-melting" assay can be readily calculated to the "before-melting" basis, but if smelter efficiency continues to increase, so that in time zinc, for instance, may be recovered on a paying basis, the method of sampling dirty brass, for example, will have to be changed also. As a matter of fact, we may expect that improved refining processes will make possible the partial recovery of lead and tin which are now lost.

In some districts of the bituminous coal field the problem of constructing bulkheads to seal off water under pressure is becoming increasingly important. Recently this matter has been brought very much to the front by the loss of a large Illinois mine due to failure of a bulkhead that separated it from several old, flooded mines. As this great misfortune has provoked much inquiry about proper bulkhead design, it is felt that a description of the successful and extensive water-sealing practice at three mines that have different natural conditions will be of considerable interest to those connected with properties having a present or future water problem and to engineers that may have to design safe bulkheads of economical construction. These three mines are the Saxton and Dresser, near Terre Haute, Ind., and the Hegeler, near Danville, Ill. All three have water conditions that make it necessary to regularly seal off all worked-out sections of the mine, and there are considerably over a hundred bulkheads in each. AS far as the writers know, these three mines are the only ones in the bituminous coal fields of the United States with anything like so large a number of water seals and experience, although a number of other mines are known to have a few bulkheads. More detail will be included herein on the Saxton mine than on the others, as the writers are more familiar with it. General Mining System All three of the mines use the same general panel room-and-pillar system, which consists of rooms turned both ways off room entries and a solid block of coal left on all sides of the completed panel except on the cross-entry side, where a heavier pillar is pierced by two entries for haulage and air. On completion of the panel the two entries arc sealed and the panel is then isolated from the rest of the mine. Owing to water conditions, no pillars are pulled; recovery inside the panel barrier pillars is approximately 65 per cent.

The investigations of Wymanl have demonstrated that copper deoxidized with several of the commonly used agents that confer immunily to ordinary hydrogen em-brittlement can still be embrittled if it is annealed alternately under oxidizing and reducing conditions. During the oxidizing cycle, oxygen diffuses into the copper and frequently deposits a subscale composed of the oxide of the residual deoxidizing agent. Upon subsequent reduction with hot hydrogen, the copper becomes ruptured along the grain boundaries to a depth sharply limited by the previous penetration of oxygen as delineated by the inner boundary of the subscale. Obviously the sensitivity to this kind of hydrogen embrittlement is engendered by the introduction of oxygen during the oxidizing anneal, but beyond this the mechanism of the process, and hence the controlling factors, remain obscure. There are several possibilities: (I) oxygen dissolved in the copper matrix of the subscale may, upon cooling prior to the hydrogen anneal, precipitate as cuprous oxide which is subsequently reduced by hydrogen as in the familiar case of hydrogen embrittlement; (2) oxygen in solid solution in copper may itself confer susceptibility to embrittlement by hydrogen; (3) the normally refractory oxides such as those of aluminum, silicon and titanium may themselves be reduced by hydrogen when in contact with copper; or (4) the precipitated oxides of the subscale may be complex compounds such, perhaps, as SiO2.Cu2O, which are partially reduced by hydrogen. These possibilities have been examined, and it has been concluded that the first three and possibly the fourth are operative collectively or individually under more or less predictable conditions. Effect OF Precipitated Cuprous Oxide and Dissolved Oxygen The literature provides no definite proof that oxygen in solid solution in copper can confer susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement; indeed, the research of Leiter2 seemed to indicate the opposite—that to produce the effect, cuprous oxide must be present in massive form and in a more or less continuous network along the grain boundaries. To test this point, pure copper has been annealed in hydrogen under conditions designed to ensure the presence in various samples of: (I) precipitated cuprous oxide, (2) dissolved oxygen only, and (3) no oxygen in any form. Very pure copper" said to contain no oxygen and no spectro-scopically detectable traces of any other element (that is, no individual detectable impurity in quantity greater than 0.0001 per cent) was used. Polycrystalline diamond compacts (PDC) have been widely used as cutting elements in the drilling tools for the oil, gas, civil and mining industries because of their faster penetration rates and longer bit life. US Department of Energy reports that PDC bits account for more than one-third of the total footage drilled worldwide (US Department of Energy, 2004). However, non-thermally-stable diamond composites (NTSDC) have seldom been applied to geothermal drilling, since premature failures of such PDC cutters have been observed in hard rock formations. Several factors need to be considered to prevent premature failure of cutters and improve cutting performance when using PDC-based bits and other rock cutting tools. The first set of factors consists of the strength, density, stiffness, toughness and thermal resistance of the PDC and the rock. A second set relates to the complex behaviour of the bonding between the PDC cutter and the bit matrix, or the pick and the pick holder, which is vital in maintaining stable, reliable and durable adhesion of the cutters to their hubs. Finally, based on a better understanding of the cutting processes, the formulation of a predictive model would assist in further development of cutter design.

A comparison of the mine site before and after mining is made to demonstrate the ""best practice"" in modern mining.Sustainability in Mineral Resource Development Extraction of mineral resources and other natural resources on the Earth has been and will continue to be an essential activity necessary to support human’s life. We live on the planet and depend on the available resources to survive. The extracted materials form the base to support modern life. However, we must be aware of the fact that mineral resources are limited on the Earth and may not last forever. Every time we extract one ton of materials, there is one ton less. They are not able to regenerate or regrow. One can ask a simple question: How long will they last? Or, is there anything left for our great grandchildren and many generations to come? The answer is not simple. Some minerals have become scarce or about to deplete. Some minerals may last longer. The reserve of a type of minerals depends on what we have discovered and the minable amount depends on accessibility and technology we have. Even if there are minerals in the deep ground, we may be limited by our technological capability. At the same time, we also need to understand the action of mineral extraction from the ground and the consequences of that action. Mineral extraction is a very hard work. We must break the ground to extract the ore, either through surface mining or underground mining. This action means disturbance of the land where we live. The disturbance is much more visible in surface mining than underground mining. The disturbed land, if not properly reclaimed after mining, is not going to be reusable. The very purpose of extracting minerals from the ground is to support our life but the action has a negative impact on our life. How can we reduce and limit disturbance of land from the action of minerals extraction? How can we make the disturbed land reusable? These issues must be properly addressed and a balance achieved."

"Cyanide is a well proven, effective lixiviant that has been utilised for centuries in gold extraction processes. Despite being used in close to 90% of gold processing plants, cyanide leaching is still being scrutinised due to its toxic nature. With governments tightening the regulations on cyanide management, and recently erected sites situated closer to community and environment, leach waste and tailings treatment has become increasingly important. Gekko Systems has worked with engineering companies and directly with gold producers to provide technical services and supply complete modular cyanide destruction (detox) systems for plants leaching both run-of-mine ore and high sulphide gravity and flotation concentrates. Although similar in principle, the different materials presented unique challenges in design and implementation. Similar to designing any section of a processing plant, the development of the cyanide destruction plant design began with laboratory test work to simulate the full scale operation. This paper focusses on the laboratory test work and how other critical factors such as geographical location, logistics, and local community play a role in the process design and construction. Two design and supply cases are discussed in this paper; one treating intensive cyanidation concentrate leach tails and one treating whole ore CIL tails. Although these plants both use the SO2/O2 process, each presented different challenges in laboratory testing and plant design, resulting in variations in final implementation including reagent choice, oxygen supply, and process control.INTRODUCTIONSince 1887, cyanide has played a large part in the beneficiation of gold from gold bearing ores. Cyanide is used to solubilise gold into solution, and is typically added in excess to maintain the leaching process. Some or all the excess cyanide can often be recovered and reused in the process however chemical destruction of cyanide is often necessary to manage cyanide levels in the tailings storage facility (TSF)."

Due to the changing face of warfare there is an ever growing need to protect the underside of combat vehicles from mine blasts. This paper presents a new method to better characterize the pressure profiles experienced by a plate as the blast develops. The explosive deformation of a small-scale plate was recorded using synchronized high-speed digital cameras, and then analyzed using 3D Digital Image Correlation software. Time-varying pressure profiles were input into an axisymmetric FEM simulation by fitting curves to data obtained from tests using Kolsky bars to measure pressures. These were then modified to find possible profiles that produce the measured deformations. It was discovered that the final deformation cannot be determined from only total impulse or peak pressures, and that it is very sensitive to the time and spatial decay of the pressures.

Comparatively recent Tasmanian legisla tion established a series of rigid control standards for environmental protection just as ma spectacular expansion of the mining industry was nearing completion. Upgrading existing protection to obtain the necessary licence to operate under these new regulations required further major works and involved a considerable outlay of non- productive capital at a time when escalating costs and falling metal prices were straining economic efficiencies to the limit. Late in 1974 a major environmental protection scheme was commissioned by the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited at Rosebery on the West Coast of Tasmania. This 4 million dollar project was specifically developed by the Company ahead of and to meet the new standards for control of total effluents discharged from its zinc-lead -copper-pyrites mine and concentrator.

Ion flotation involves the adsorption of ionic species, in association with surfactant molecules, at the surface of rising gas bubbles, for the purpose of recovering and concentrating those ions. The objective of this study was to optimise the ion flotation process using a heap-leach liquor, containing gold cyanide, and the surfactant cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB). The aim was to minimise the surfactant reagent dose, maximise the throughput of feed liquor in the process, and satisfy the dual constraints of a high gold recovery and a high volume reduction factor. Development of a first order model of the ion flotation process formed the theoretical basis for the test program procedure and the interpretation of the results. Batch tests were used in order to determine the ultimate recovery curve for the heap leach liquor-CTAB surfactant system. The results indicated that a surfactant dose of about 0.083 g/l would be necessary in order to achieve a satisfactory gold recovery. Continuous tests were then performed on a small-scale pilot plant at the Newcastle Laboratories. The optimum result achieved was a gold recovery of 85 per cent, a volume reduction factor of ten, and a feed throughput of 2.3 m3/m2-h. Recent work also indicates that very much higher volume reductions can be achieved using a larger diameter vessel. The improvement may be a consequence of a reduction in wall effects and hence an improvement in foam drainage.

Punatsangchu Hydroelectric Project Authority is constructing 1020 MW underground hydroelectric project in Bhutan. The project envisages construction of concrete dam, Desilting Chamber, Head Race Tunnel, Power House Complex and Tail Race Tunnel. Tunneling is one of the major activity in any underground projects as they are driven for multiple activities. By and large the tunnels are a major part of connecting networks from surface to caverns/underground working sites. Many tunnels in hydropower project are part of water conducting systems and one such important tunnel is the Tail Race Tunnel in this project and had to be excavated in thinly foliated rockmass conditions by D&B method. The rockmass is traversed by three to four joint sets and few minor shear seams. Rock Class “Q” values were between III and IV. Tunnel was excavated by full face parallel hole drilling blasting method. The adopted blasting method consisted of drilling 45mm (1.77 inch) diameter holes to a depth of 2m and the drilled holes were charged with 40mm (1.57 inch) diameter cartridge explosives and charges were initiated with half second non electric initiators. The perimeter holes were drilled at closer spacing of 30cm (1 feet) and alternate holes were charged using 32mm (1.23 inch) diameter cartridges explosive. Low dipping foliation joints present in the rockmass tend to slab in crown portion and erratic occurrence of intrusive bodies lead to unpredictable behavior of rock mass posing a major challenge for the safe excavation. Stability was a major issue through controlled blasting under constant supervision too could not limit the overbreak in certain weak rockmass conditions thereby exposing cavities of about 2.5m (8.2 feet). The stabilization of these cavities and handling the overbreak due to rockmass condition was time consuming and warranted additional supports. With systematic measurements and controlled blast designs the Horse Shoe Shaped Tail Race Tunnel of 9.1 m (29.85 feet) diameter and 304m (997.37 feet) length to connect with Downstream Surge Gallery of 314m (1030 feet) length, 18m (59 feet) wide and 58.8m (193 feet) height in thinly foliated and jointed biotite gneiss rockmass was successfully excavated.

Natural chromium-bearing spinels (chromites), which are used as refractory materials in basic steelmaking, are the only commercially important chromium ore and are also encountered as difficult-to-separate contaminants in ore deposits of potential economic value. Techniques for characterization and separation of ore materials frequently are dependent on the magnetic properties of the constituent minerals. An experimental program was initiated to explore the effects of temperature and of simple mechanical and thermal treatments on the static magnetic properties of several ore-grade natural chromites. Studies of the temperature dependence of the magnetic properties showed that the natural chromites, which are dilute in the magnetic ions Fe and Cr, order magnetically only at cryogenic temperatures. However, mechanical treatment in the form of crushing produces a magnetic component that is ordered at room temperature and that is of sufficient strength to alter magnetic-separation characteristics. The additional magnetic component apparently is associated with surface structures which develop during crushing and disappear after heating to above about 500°C. Preliminary studies indicate that this surface structure enhances the susceptibility of the chromite grain surfaces to gas reactions at moderate temperatures.

The development of set of laboratory experiments, intended to help undergraduate students meet Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board requirements for Engineering Design outcomes, is described.The laboratory, which is part of a third year level course in hydrometallurgy, is aimed at advancing the ability of students to generate and use experimental results to design an industrial copper leach/SX/EW plant. Emphasis is placed on the students demonstrating the ability to use of their engineering knowledge in weighing the pros and cons of the various process options that they test in converging to a final flowsheet. INTRODUCTION Over the past number of years the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board, CEAB, has dramatically shifted the way that they evaluate undergraduate programs. In the past, the focus was on measuring of the quantity and quality of material the students were intended to learn as well as the methods and resources used to deliver that material. Now, rather than principally evaluating the inputs of programs, the focus is more on measuring the quality of the outputs from the programs, i.e. the quality of graduating students. In this regard, the CEAB has developed a list of twelve attributes that learners must develop in the course of their studies. Engineering programs must, not only demonstrate that their curriculums provide opportunities to develop these attributes, but must measure student proficiency in each of these attributes as they progress toward graduation. One particular graduate attribute that Laurentian University’s Bharti School of Engineering has encouraged its faculty members to develop content for is “design”. Engineering Canada (2018) defines this attribute as “an ability to design solutions for complex, open-ended engineering problems and to design systems, components or processes that meet specified needs with appropriate attention to health and safety risks, applicable standards, and economic, environmental, cultural and societal considerations”. The previous laboratory component for the hydrometallurgy course was a collection of unconnected experiments covering leaching, solvent extraction, ion exchange, and electrowinning. Like in other undergraduate courses, students would perform stand-alone experiments, make the specified measurements, do the specified analyses of the results, and report the findings, all as strictly detailed in the lab manual. The vision for the new lab was to create an experience that would more closely mimic an industrial research program whereby students would start with a given feed material and would progress through a series of connected experiments. Emphasis is placed on the student demonstrating competency in, not only, generating and analyzing experimental data, but also in using the data along with their engineering knowledge to design and evaluate the pros and cons various plant configuration options. Principally, students are asked to weigh cost, safety, and environmental concerns in converging to their final flowsheet. In designed the leach circuit, students must weigh the costs/benefits of varying leach temperature. Higher leach temperatures will yield faster and more complete copper dissolution, which will allow for the specification of relatively smaller leaching circuits, saving capital costs. However, hotter acid solutions are more dangerous to handle and require increasing amounts of energy to heat the slurry, increasing operating costs. In solid/liquid separation, students must weigh the pros and cons of the addition of a flocculent to assist settling. The flocculant will allow for the design of a thickener circuit that employs units with a relatively smaller area, but will result in a thickener underflow with a lower pulp density, which may necessitate a larger number of thickeners. In addition, the environmental concerns of producing a tailings product that contains an organic contaminant should be addressed.
