DEPRESSION in all lines of the mineral industry except gold, which began in 1930 and continued, even worse, through 1931, had its effect on ore concentration. Construction was limited to the completion of plants already begun. Every possible economy was adopted. Changes and improvements involving expense were postponed. Research was largely abandoned. Operations became highly efficient and costs were cut down, although this did not necessarily mean a lower cost per ton because of the greatly reduced capacity at which mills were run. Lower metal prices caused the operators to seek the optimum ratio of concentration and grade of concentrates looking toward maximum economic recovery; that is, net profit. In the crushing field no marked changes occurred. The Symons cone crusher for intermediate work is in use almost everywhere. Its manufacturers claim that 900 machines have been installed in 21 countries, replacing two previous steps of crushing and yielding a product sufficiently fine to form a satisfactory feed for rod mills and ball mills. A new Telsmith crusher has appeared which has curved jaws something like the Symons cone and consequently the same advantage as the latter.

[Before 1914 Germany held a virtual monopoly on the world supply of potash for fertilizer purposes. During the World War, potash shipments to the United States ceased, and recourse was had to domestic supplies. High war-tine prisms stimulated interest in various sources, and domestic production increased rapidly. At the close of the war, resumption of shipments from Germany mad other sources reduced prices to below pre-war levels, and, as a result, most of the domestic procedures ceased operations. In a Nation-wide appraisal of coking-coal reserves and of the practicability of upgrading marginal deposits to metallurgical standards, this study of the preparation characteristics of the coals in Cambria County, Pa. , was undertaken. Over 90 percent of the coal remaining in Cambria Comity is found in the Upper Freeport, Lower Freeport, Upper Kittanning, and Lower Kittanning beds. The Middle Kittanning bed, although mined on a commercial scale in the past, is not an important bed now, as most of the remaining reserves are too thin to be mined over wide areas. For many years, Cambria County has been an important source of coal for industrial and metallurgical purposes. The) principal production comes from the Lower Kittanning bed, which accounts for almost .60 percent of the Cambria County coal output. Table 1 shows the county's coal production, by beds, during 1948.

A mineral slurry data hank has been compiled, containing slurry pipelining data on sixteen ores, concentrates, and tailings. The data bank it in the form of a computer print-out all they necessary system constants and headloss data for each mineral commodity. The purpose of the data bank was to assist in the development of a universal head loss correlation for mineral slurries, if such a thing exists. Present headloss correlations were tested and found to be inconsistent for the various mineral slurries. Consequently, a different approach was taken, that of compiling a library or Stanton diagrams relating friction factor and Reynolds numbers for a given slurry in a given pipe diameter. The advantages of the diagrams arc demonstrated and discussed. While this correlation shows excellent potential, it is necessary that additional work, both theoretical and experimental, be performed. In addition, two equations are given from which a design velocity may be obtained to minimize deposition or formation of bedload. The equations are based on data taken from the mineral slurry data bank.

The nickel laterite industry is divided into two camps when it comes to the grade of the ferronickels produced. One group, led by Falcondo and Cerro Matoso, markets high-grade ferronickels in the range of 35 to 40% nickel, while another group, led by SLN and the Japanese smelters, favour lower grades in the range of 20 to 25%. Because the ores processed by these smelters vary widely in terms of nickel content and iron to nickel ratios, it is probably more accurate to classify these smelters in terms of their iron recovery: Falcondo and Cerro Matoso smelt at lower reduction potentials and thus recover only 15 to 30% of the iron in their ores, while SLN and the Japanese smelters are very reducing and recover 45 to 65% of their iron. Low reductions generally imply higher slag losses and lower nickel recoveries, but also lower power and reductant requirements; higher reductions, the reverse. The question is, therefore, whether an economically optimum ferronickel grade exists for processing any given ore. This paper proposes a methodology for determining this optimum grade and concludes that nickel laterite smelters should favour low reductions and production of high-grade ferronickels.

As recently as 1915, helium was available only in very small quantities at a cost equivalent to $2,500 per cubic foot. It was a laboratory curiocity, and its properties were of interest to a limited number of scientists (11).3/ During the past 30 years, however, helium has grown from a plaything of scientists to a factor of importance in the prosecution of the recent war. Navy blimps filled with nonflammable helium proved to be more than a match for German submarines operating in the Atlantic. American bombers were able to fly unheard-of distances to drop bombs on Tokyo, Nagoya, Yokahama, and other Japanese cities because they had been made lighter with magnesium, arc-welded in a helium atmosphere. The Army utilized helium-filled radio-sonde balloons to obtain vital information concerning weather conditions affecting D-day invasions and other military maneuvers.

This report describes the feasibility of mining the oil shale deposits of the Piceance Creek basin in Colorado by an integrated open pit system. The study is based upon a comprehensive analysis of pertinent environmental, economic, and engineering factors. Ten mining cases are investigated, and the mine design and cost estimates for each case are presented in this report. Nine of the cases represent three cutoff grades, defining oil shale ore as equal to and above 15 gallons per ton (gpt), 20 gpt, and 25 gpt at three ore production levels of 500,000 tons per day (TPD), 1,250,000 TPD, and 2,500,000 TPD. The tenth case is an alternate design of the 500,000 TPD production rate at the above 15 gpt cutoff grade. The report consists of Volume I, a technical and cost comparison of the ten cases; Volume II-Part I, a detailed explanation of the estimating methods used; and Volume II-Part 2, a more detailed discussion of the technical and cost features of the ten cases than is presented in Volume I.

Cable reel systems for shuttle cars were investigated to determine whether an improved system could be identified. Interviews and mine visits were conducted to better define limitations and problems with present systems. Although simple and relatively inexpensive, present cable reel systems are not fully satisfactory. Several concepts for a different technical configuration were formulated and evaluated. An all ectric system using electronic control and external sensors was recommended for further development.

Underground coal mine tracked vehicles have been studied to determine the state of the art and how brakes might be added to the coal haulage cars. Specific areas of interest are: brake sys terns, couplers, car trucks and car handling procedures. Problems related to adding brakes to the haulage cars appear to be: the limited amount of room to mount the brakes on the cars, brake line connection between rotary dump cars, achieving desirable braking characteristics without over complicating the system and keeping the installation cost to a reasonable figure. This document combines the information contained in the first issue of the "State-of -the-Art of Underground Coal Mine Tracked Vehicle Brake Systems," BRL Report No. 6080, with that contained in a subsequent monthly report.

Five sulfide minerals from the Magiwnt mine, southeast Missouri were analyzed for 31 trace elements in over 300 samples by laser microprobe spectrographic analysis of polished sections. The concentration of several trace elements shows a pattern of progressive variation with depth (space) and variation with different paragenetic stages (time) of each mineral. Factor analysis of the geochemical data shows sympathetic correlation both in space and in time of Bi, Cd, Ge, and Sn in galena and sphalerite, and Ni and Co in sphalerite and marcasite.

THE application of the cyanide process to complex sulphide ores for the extraction of their bold and silver is no longer a novelty, but, as an example showing modern tendencies in this direction, the following description of the new milling process at the Lucky-Tiger mine is offered: The extraordinary richness of the ore in the upper workings of this mine made any thought of milling in its early hays seen unnecessary. Its location in an almost inaccessible part of the rugged mountains just south of the Arizona boundary-line, and 60 miles from the town of Douglas, made the expense of bringing in machinery and supplies a very serious consideration. But, after the property had been shipping high-grade ore on mule-back for a few years, there remained in the mine a considerable tonnage of vein-matter that was too low in value to ship, but which it was thought could be milled near the mine at a profit. The first milling-experiment consisted in the installation of Nissen stamps in conjunction with concentrating-tables and Frue vanners, but, as the ore from the upper workings contained most of its silver in the form of cerargyrite, this type of mill was not successful. The proximity of the mine to the great copper-concentrating mills of Cananea and Moctezuma naturally made the influence of copper-milling, ideas felt in the company's next installation. At considerable expense a stage-crushing concentrating-mill, with a capacity of 100 tons per day, was built. This mill was modeled along the lines of the most approved practice in copper-concentrators at that time, the main idea being that crushing by stages in rolls was necessary in order to prevent losses from ?sliming." This circular is part II of a series of papers reviewing the literature on air conditioning in mines with particular reference to the health, safety, and efficiency of employees. It deals with the physiological aspects of the principal physical qualities of mine air; part I (Information Circular 7001), chapters 1 to 3, discussed the physiological aspects of the chemical qualities of mine air, especially when contaminated with organic matter and noxious and toxic gases; part III will describe theoretical and practical methods of air-conditioning mines to try to correct or alleviate the conditions mentioned and will discuss the results attained by some of the systems now in use in various parts of tae world. With the present emphasis on the necessity for preserving the health of the Nation's defenders, industrial as well as military, attention should be called to the various conditions that may affect adversely their health and efficiency. One of the most important of these is exposure to abnormal air conditions, especially high temperatures and humidities. Therefore, it is believed that although the data presented here on the physiological effects of exposure to high temperatures cue intended mainly for the mining and allied industries, they are applicable to many other defense industries as well as to conditions present in some activities of the Army and Navy.

"Different methods aiming at specific energy calculation and design of AG/SAG circuits are used in mining. They include JK DWT/SMC test, SAGDesign test and CWi/RWi/BWi tests. The simplest methods with no secret equations and giving energy required for grinding in kWh/t were proposed by F.?. Bond and J.H. Starkey. D.J. Barratt proposed to use results of CWi/RWi/BWi tests for AG/SAG mill sizing. The present paper gives an alternative for forecast of specific AG/SAG energy. The principle is similar to the theory proposed earlier and consists in cumulative AG/SAG energy calculation using indices of rod and ball grinding (RWi+BWi) without impact crushing index (CWi). Then total energy is divided between two grinding stages using special formulas based on extensive statistical information. The forecast indices of AG/SAG and ball grinding are similar to the SAGDesign testing results. Hereinafter the predicted indices are used for mill sizing of the whole grinding circuit. The method considered in the paper enables prediction of AG/SAG energy based on the test results according to Bond method. The proposed method version was not widely published earlier. The aim of the work was to elaborate cost-effective, reliable and accessible way to determine specific AG/SAG energy. At this stage of method development, it is recommended to use it only for works at preliminary Geometallurgy stage (Scoping, Pre-Feasibility). At design stage the obtained data should be confirmed by appropriate testing using alternative JK DWT/SMC and SAGDesign methods.INTRODUCTIONAppropriate crushing and grinding testing is required to design efficient comminution circuits. It is obviously important to obtain accurate information about ore hardness properties since the main energy consumption at the plant is associated with comminution processes. Moreover, it is required to apply the processes that make it possible to minimize operating costs and efficiently use capacity of the installed equipment installed.When studying ore hardness properties, it is required to take into account that breakage of the material is performed using different equipment. That is why accurate selection of the equipment and the circuit calculation without relevant testworks is impossible. Ideally, the testworks should provide answers to the following questions: determination of ore hardness properties, determination of specific energy consumption for comminution as well as obtaining of sufficient amount of statistically significant results from the tests. The results from crushability and grindability testworks in the first place provide assessment of ore hardness properties and in addition correlate with throughput of the respective equipment. The data obtained can be used for modeling of comminution circuits at the stage of the technology development"

In order to use metallurgical grade silicon (MG-Si) as a starting material for solar cell, phosphorus has to be removed from silicon because phosphorus is a n-type dopant. On the other hand, silicon, ferrosilicon, and silicomanganese are widely used as deoxidizers in steel refining processes. Since most of the phosphorus introduced during the deoxidation process is brought into final products, it is important -to lower the phosphorus content of these alloys. Hence, thermodynamics of phosphorus in such metals is important for the evaluation of dephosphorization processes. In the present study, thermodynamic properties of phosphorus in molten Si-P alloys at 1723- 1848K and those of Si-Fe-P and Si-Mn-P alloys at 1723K have been determined by equilibrating respective metals in a controlled phosphorus partial pressure. "An important, function of the U.S. Bureau of Mines is to instruct miners in first aid, and as a means of promoting interest in it first-aid contests are held under the auspices of the Bureau, usually in coop; ration with other interested organizations, especially the American Red Cross, the National Safety Council and various operators' and Miners' associations. It was early found that the method of judging first-aid meets is one of the most vital factors in determining the degree of success of the meet.It may be safely stated that there is no method for the judging of first-aid contests that has proved ideal. A method that would give the most uniform judging would necessitate the rating of each team by the same judge or committee of judges and, in order that a judge may rate a team satisfactorily, he should see that team perform several events and average the ratings. Such a procedure is not practicable where there are many terms entered in the contest, as it would prolong the meet indefinitely. To overcome this objection the method has been tried of assigning separate judges to each team but this brings in a new factor the individuality of the various judges, some of whom rate closely, others loosely. The next development was to average the judging by having the judges rate different teams for each event. This would seem to solve the problem out it has been found, after using the method over a wide area for a considerable period of time, that the differences in the judging are too marked to be at all satisfactory. The next development was to appoint a committee of chief judges three to five in number especially trained and experienced, to aid the individual judges in rating the teams. This method has proved satisfactory at small meets but, as committee must review the work of each judge on each event, it has not been deemed feasible for a large meet."

Two-stage electric smelting tests, using small submerged arc furnaces, were made on high-iron manganiferous materials from the Pioche District, Nev., and the Cuyuna Range, Minn. The object was to reduce sufficient iron in the first stage to give a slag with a favorable Mn to Fe ratio for smelting to ferromanganese in the second stage. The nodulized flotation concentrate from the Pioche District contained 29.2 percent Mn and had a Mn to Fe ratio of 2.3:l. When smelted with coke and silica or alumina as flux, more than 90 percent of the manganese was recovered in slags with Mn to Fe ratios of 10: :24:1. The Pioche slag was smelted to ferromanganese using coke and lime- stone or dolomite as flux. The ferromanganese was high in silicon but other- wise met specifications. Recovery of manganese to ferromanganese in this step was 73 to 78 percent. Overall recovery of manganese was about 70 percent. The sintered flotation concentrate from the Cuyuna Range material contained 12.9 percent Mn and had a Mn to Fe ratio of 0.3:1. When smelted with limestone as flux, about 83 percent of the manganese was recovered in a slag with a Mn to Fe ratio of about 6:1. The Cuyuna slag was smelted to ferromanganese with coke and limestone for flux. Recovery in this step was 61 percent of the manganese in a high silicon ferromanganese. Overall recovery of manganese was about 50 percent.

From the first day of new miner training until the day they retire, mine workers will experience changes due to the normal aging process. It is an unfortunate fact of life that many age-related changes result in diminished physical, sensory, or cognitive capabilities. Of course, workers also gain a tremendous wealth of experience, knowledge, and insight as they age, making them a vitally important resource for their company. Effective leveraging of this precious resource requires both an appreciation of the changes that occur with age and an understanding of methods that can be used to reduce the injury risk that may result. The purpose of this training is to provide the information necessary to accomplish these objectives. Aging workers may not necessarily have a higher injury risk overall; however, the effects of a musculoskeletal injury (MSI) on older workers may be more extreme. MSHA data show that not only does the percentage of MSIs increase when workers are over age 30, so does the number of days lost per injury, as shown in the graph below [MSHA 2005]. [ ] Protecting the safety and health of aging workers requires matching the demands of the job to worker capabilities. This means reducing or eliminating risk factors for injuries, such as heavy lifting, awkward postures, static postures, repetitive movements, and/or vibration exposures. In other cases, it may mean improving visibility or streamlining processes. Designing jobs to accommodate the changing capabilities of older workers will not only reduce injury risk for older workers, it will have the added benefit of protecting younger employees as well.

"With the increasing proportion of bituminous coal in blend coal, the safety of blend coal during pulverization and transportation is gradually being paid more and more attention. Therefore, the explosivity of bituminous pulverized coal (PC) with different volatile content from 25 to 38% was studied by measuring the combustion flame length after its injection into a glass pipe with the heat source installed in the center. The results indicated that high volatile content bituminous PC is apt to have higher explosivity. By blending different bituminous PC with 10% anthracite, the explosivity of bituminous PC showed a positive correlation with the proportion –OH radical. However, different bituminous PC seemed to have the same explosivity when the addition of anthracite increased to 20%. With the further increasing proportion of anthracite to 30%, the explosivity of bituminous PC with high –OH proportion became negligible while a weak explosivity of high –CH3 proportion bituminous PC still remained.IntroductionWith the increasing iron ore prices and decreasing steel prices, it has become critical for iron and steel enterprises to control the cost in ironmaking and steelmaking process. Blast furnaces (BF) are the main consumer in ironmaking process, which occupies 70% fuel consumption of total steelmaking process [1]. In this circumstance, any means necessary is taken by BF operators to lower the cost of iron in production. Coke and iron ore are the main expense in this process, who takes up a very high proportion in total cost. Pulverized coal injection (PCI) is the most efficient way to reduce coke ratio, which replace coke with relatively cheaper PC.At present, most of BF is injected with blend coal in the consideration of decent combustion property and quantity of heat. Simultaneously, bituminite and anthracite blending is an effective method to obtain blend coals with required composition and performance, such as volatile and ash content, etc. Nevertheless, a very huge gap was found between the price of bituminous coal and anthracite in some regions of China, in which the price of bituminite can be just 70% of the price of anthracite. Thus, iron enterprises in these regions attempt to possibly amplify the proportion of bituminite in blend coal. Increasing proportion of bituminite results in higher volatile content in blend coal, by which the safety of blend coal during pulverization or transportation was deteriorated.Relatively, coals with higher volatile content usually possess stronger explosivity, which means that volatile and explosivity may related to some extent. However, the relationship between volatile and explosivity is not of certainty for some PC with high volatile content around 40% was found to be inexplosive in comparison to the coals with lower volatile content. With the increasing proportion of bituminous coal in blend coal, investigations on the factors of PC explosivity have become more and more important. Therefore, bituminous coals with different volatile content were selected. The explosivity of blend coal and its relationship between volatile content and functionality was investigated in this research."

Modification of the silicon in Al-Si alloys can be performed by adding a very small amount of some elements like Na, Sr and Ca to alter the form of silicon from an acicular shape to a fine fibrous one. This modification results in a considerable improvement in mechanical properties especially elongation, Metallographic observations in A356 alloy indicated the degree of the modification with Na, Sr and Ca, They showed that the effect of Ca as a modifier is not as strong as is Na or Sr while Na is the most effective modifier, Although modifiers improve mechanical properties, they also increase porosity in castings, The reduced pressure test (RPT) and Tatur test showed that the increasing porosity with Na is the most and with Sr is the least.
