This survey report, the first for this type of fuel, is issued to provide information on the characteristics of the burner-fuel oils now manufactured for sale. Reports of surveys of diesel fuel, conducted under a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Deportment of the Interior, have been published annually since 1950.2/ This survey of burner-fuel oils is similar to the diesel-fuel surveys In pattern and has been conducted under an extension of the same agreement at the request of the Oil-Heat Institute of America and the petroleum industry. It is not intended to conflict with the diesel-fuel survey but rather to supplement it. Burner-fuel oils, also specifically referred to as heating oil, range oil, furnace oil, "Bunker C," and fuel oil, are sold in increasing volumes for use in this country and for export. Sales of all grades of fuel oil in the United States have increased from 340 million barrels in 1926Y to over a billion barrels per year. 4/ Distillate fuel oil sales, in proportion to total fuel-oil volume sold, increased from 42 percent in 1950 to 50 percent in 1954. 1.Assessment of methane content in coal. Given a naturally low methane content in 11 Coal Seam and the fact that the areas of the 11 Seam adjacent to the tunnelway were degassing for a very, very long time due to previous development and mining, it is conservatively estimated that the remaining in -situ methane is less than 0.5m3/tonne. 2. Continuous miner cutting rate based on the past practice. The best loading rate recorded at the past operations of Smoky River Coal was 45 seconds for a 8 tonnes shuttle car. Using these records, the maximum peak loading rate potential at the face is calculated at 0.178 tonnes per one second or 10.67 tonnes per one minute. 3. Flotation tests are described on samples of two lowgrade nickeliferous ores of Oregon and Washington. The sample from the Congress mine, Ferry County, Wash., contained 1.2 percent Ni, occurring chiefly as millerite. The sample from the Shamrock mine, Jackson County, Oreg., contained 2.20 percent Ni and 0.78 percent Cu occurring chiefly as pentlandite, nickeliferous pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite. The millerite in the Congress ore was concentrated by flotatioin with aulfydric collectors in a series of locked tests to recover 73 percent of the nickel as a 7 percent bulk concentrate. By successively regrinding and floating the bulk concentrate, it was further concentrated to 12.4 percent Ni at a recovery of 59 percent and 21.8 percent Ni at a recovery of 50 percent. Attempts at selective concentration of the copper-nickel Shamrock ore were only partly successful because of the intimate association of pentlandite and chalcopyrite. The nickel concentrate, which contained 86 percent of the nickel, had an analysis of 4.42 percent Ni and 1.03 percent Cu. The copper concentrate had an analysis of 18.8 percent Cu and 1.96 percent Ni and contained 48.5 percent of the copper. A bulk sulfide concentrate contained 92 percent of the copper and 01 per¬cent of the nickel and had an analysis of 4.17 percent Ni and 1.63 percent Cu.

Recent results from electrochemical measurements demonstrate that trithiocarbonate (TTC) collectors are more readily oxidized to their corresponding dithiolates than the dithiocarbonate/xanthate (DTC) collectors. Based on the traditional analysis of collector adsorption, trithiocarbonates might then be expected to be effective for bulk sulfide mineral flotation. Previous bench-scale flotation research had shown that TTC collectors are very effective for the flotation of copper sulfide minerals and PGM (platinum group metal) sulfide minerals. More recently, the TTC collectors were evaluated for auriferous pyrite recovery in benchscale plant scale flotation testing in the United States and in plant tests at Anglogold in South Africa. TTC collectors were also applied in bench-scale testing of a PGM ore. In each case an improved separation efficiency was realized. Fundamental studies at the University of Utah examining the effect of collector structure (functional group, -O-CS2 versus .S-CS2), specifically with respect to auriferous pyrite flotation, are in progress. The effect of collector structure was evaluated with air as well as nitrogen as the flotation gas medium. Experimental techniques utilized included electrochemically controlled contact angle measurements to evaluate mineral hydrophobicity and infrared spectroscopy to explain collector adsorption phenomena at the mineral surface.

Commercially available flotation technologies for recovery of mineral fines have remained essentially unchanged for several decades. Recent studies have focused simply on improving mechanical and open column cells. Such studies have explored different control strategies and have aimed to improve reagent selectivity, fine air bubble generation and particle-air contact. However, no study has questioned whether current techniques are the most efficient technology for recovering mineral fines. Given that both mechanical and open column cells have a widely accepted carrying capacity limitation, the lack of extensive research into an alternative technology is surprising. Most recently, open column flotation has become an entrenched technology, and it is undermining the efficient recovery of mineral fines worldwide. An alternative exists. Packed column flotation overcomes the above-stated problems as the technology surpasses the carrying capacity limitation of current means by several-fold and almost always achieves the best performance in many comparative pilot tests and full-scale plant operations. Filling a column with packing plates creates a network of sloped walls capable of supporting a froth bed many times deeper than conventional machines. Having froth up to 75 percent of the total column volume tolerates all feed changes encountered in the plant environment and permits maximum flexibility in concentrate quality control. Furthermore, its scale-up is straightforward by increasing column volume or the number of interconnected small cells. As the air breaks upon rising and is distributed horizontally through packing plates, the air spargers can be replaced with a simple blower, resulting in considerable savings in operation and maintenance costs. Packed flotation technology provides a break-through solution for the separation of fine and ultra-fine minerals. Its simplicity, superior performance, and low cost structure make it an appealing alternative to current technologies and allow greater flexibility in downstream processing. Future industrial applications include a wide variety of metallic and non-metallic ores. This paper focuses on some recent scale-up campaigns for nickel and copper sulphide flotation applications compared directly to conventional equipment.

The starting mill strip solution· for this study· is an ammonium uranyl tricarbonate solution of pH 8.2 containing 20g uranium/liter, after a DEPA/TOPO extraction process from sulfuric acid leaching liquor. To the first portion of the concentrated acidified strip solution, hydrofuoric acid is added at 95°C in reduced condition to obtain uranium tetrafluoride. The second portion of the uranyl carbonate strip is subjected to a precipitation step by admixing 0.3 volume of non-solvent precipitating agent such as acetone per volume of uranium. ·Uranium oxide (U30 8) is obtained from this precipitate by calcination for half an hour at 800°C in air. The third portion of the strip solution is neutralized to a pH 6.5 with sulfuric acid to precipitate iron and other contaminants. The solution is further acidified to a pH 1.85 with continuous air bubbling to remove CO2, followed by H2Ch precipitation at pH 3.5 to obtain uranyl peroxide. The latter is reduced by stannous chloride to obtain uranium trioxide dihydrate UO3. 2H20. Identifications, characterization· and purity of these products are carried out by complete chemical analyses, Scanning electron microscope study, tap density determination, X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopic investigations. The achieved results agreed well with that of the published data for these nuclear grade purity products.

De otro lado, el trabajo señala también la división de los minerales marinos en tres categorías: las sales disueltas y en organismos, los sedimentos y depósitos en el suelo profundo submarino y los depósitos consolidados e inconsolidados de la plataforma continental. The Explosives Division of the United States Bureau of Mines makes certain laboratory and field investigations that deal with explosions, explosives, ignition, and combustion, together with many related problems, such as the cause and prevention of fires, and certain fundamental scientific questions bearing upon the determination of the chemical and physical mechanisms underlying some of the important phenomena encountered. Its work on explosives has been particularly directed toward determination of the chemical and physical characteristics of explosives designed for use in coal mines and in a more limited way to those used in metal mines, tunnels, quarries, and other engineering operations. This work presents design features of an innovative in-line mixing helical (coiled) reactor for flocculation and flotation as a solid-liquid separation process for suspended particles (including liquid droplets). The device has been named flocs generator reactor (FGR), a compact system whereby the flocculation of particles is assisted by the kinetic energy transfer from the hydraulic flow through the reactor and/or by the injection of microbubbles (30 - 70 ¦m). The flow mixing presented a plug flow regime with a low dispersion degree, promoting the required hydrodynamic conditions to disperse the polymer flocculant (cationic polyacrylamide) and to generate æstrongÆ flocs of Fe(OH)3 or clays (as colloidal model systems) with aggregation using an anionic polymer, Al2(SO4)3 and poly aluminium chloride (PAC), and oil emulsions destabilisation with a high molecular weight cationic polymer. The solid-liquid separation of the flocs was then achieved either by settling or by flotation with microbubbles. This paper discusses advances in this new in-line flocculation-rapid flotation device to remove æaerated aggregatesÆ, aggregates with entrained and entrapped bubbles. Studies were carried out with different models of FGRs (varying the length:volume ratio) and process efficiency (mainly kinetics) evaluated as a function of polymer concentration and some operating parameters, namely, feed flow-rate, air:solids ratio and residence time. Results showed that the aerated flocs are readily floated with rising rates in the order of 120 mh-1, values higher than those obtained for the settling of the non-aerated flocs (18 - 24 mh-1). The FGR requires short residence times and generates dense, well structured flocs (with a mass fractal dimension, dF of about three) which withstand high shear forces. Mechanisms involved appear to include small bubble formation and their rapid occlusion (entrapment) within flocs, nucleation of bubbles at floc/water interfaces, polymer coiling as a result of æsalting outÆ effects at the aqueous/air interface and plug flow type of mixing (flocculation). Successful examples of emulsified oil and solids removal from water are shown and because in all cases high efficiencies were obtained (>90 per cent removal). Due to the high process efficiency and high loading capacity shown, the FGR appears to have good potential as an in-line flotation-separator device in applications requiring high rate solid-liquid or liquid-liquid separations.

Diamonds occur in N.S.W., Victoria and north west Tasmania. Diamonds from different areas appear to have their own characteristics, lending weight to the suggestion that three or four different sources (different in location and age) have produced the diamonds found in alluvials at quite a number of locations in Eastern Australia. Explorers for kimberlites in Victoria must overcome a number of field difficulties. The writer's approach attempted to find exploration targets by literature search, noting unusual garnet occurrences, and by relating records of diamond occurrences to described mining activity. While the records are biased towards gold, the study did lead to a pipe, located well away from known diamond-bearing alluvials. Core from one test hole has shown this intrusive to include an alkaline ultramafic breccia with many kimberlitic affinities - a breccia containing mantle-derived minerals, but not a true kimberlite. (A detailed rock description is appended to this paper, but is not the purpose of the paper.) This result enhances the possibility that kimberlites may occur in Victoria, on or near large scale faults or grabens. The depth of fracture penetration may have been different

IN the belief that a critical study of its operating problems might be a sound investment, the Cuban American Manganese Corporation initiated an ore-treatment research in cooperation with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. One of the early objectives of this research naturally became the relationship of the microscopy of the Cuban ores of the Corporation to their flotation treatment. The operations in Cuba have already been described by F. S. Norcross, Jr.7 and the laboratory study of manganese oxide flotation goes back a number of years .4 Broadly speaking, the difficulties encountered in the flotation of manganese ores are that the consumption of reagents is extremely high, the concentrate contains more silica than is desirable and the tailing losses are relatively high. An appreciable betterment on any of these scores would achieve a definite betterment in costs, quantity of minable ores, and quality of product. The microscope study discussed in this paper was made on samples from the Quinto mine, from the Ponupo mine, and from mill products at various stages of passage of the ore through the mill. The writers have had access to Company records and in particular to the petro¬graphic studies made on thin sections of ore by the late Professors R. J. Colony and Philip Krieger, of Columbia University. They acknowledge their debt to both of these men for the help derived from the reports. Manganese oxides are black, friable, smudging. It is, therefore, very difficult to judge operations by inspection. The mineralogy of manganese compounds seems to be confused, and the authors believe that many more minerals have been described than actually exist. Much of this difficulty is due to the prevalence of the structural conditions that will be discussed further in this paper; namely, the porosity and the friability of the ores, and the extremely intimate association of minute manganiferous mineral crystals with impurities of various sorts. By all odds the most important manganese mineral in Cuba is the one that in this paper is called "psilomelane." The name "psilomelane" has been used in so many different ways that the choice of it for this ore may not be approved by all. However, it seems to be the best under the circumstances. This mineral accounts for about 97 per cent of the manganese in the ores of the Quinto and Ponupo mines and in the mill feed. The remaining odd 3 per cent consists mostly of pyrolusite together with minor amounts of other manganese oxide minerals. HIGH ACTIVITY, continuing the substantial recovery from the slump of 1954, characterized the domestic nonfuels-mining industries during 1956 Income generated in producing nonfuel minerals and mineral products3 increased 9 percent over 1955 as compared with a 6-percent increase for all industries. Thus, the 1956 performance of the mineral industries, while not as dramatic as the 27-percent increase obtained in 1955, continued to exceed the gains of the total economy. Other measures of mineral activity strengthen this conclusion. The index of physical volume of mineral production, presented for the first time as an integral part of this review, reflects significant gains in all major sectors during 1956; and, although the overall increase was diminished somewhat by the steel and iron-ore strike in July 1956, the all-mineral index (including fuels) reached a new high.

"The study described in this paper, on the reactions in an iron blast furnace, is part of the investigation being conducted by the Bureau of Mines on combustion of coke and the reduction of iron oxides in the blast furnace. Previous study of the combustion zone of the iron blast furnace, by means of a series of as samples taken through the tuyeres across the hearths of 13 blast furnaces, showed that the combustion of the coke in the blast-furnace hearth is complete at a distance of 32 to 40 inches from the nose of the tuyere, measured horizontally toward the center of the furnace. The results of this previous work are sum¬marized in the curves shown in figure 1, where it will be noted that practically all of the oxygen disappears at a distance of approximately 30 inches from the nose of the tuyere.In order to determine the height at which oxygen is found in a vertical direction above the tuyeres - it had been suggested that the combustion zone turned upward near the tuyere and to obtain comparisons with the samples taken at the Bureau of Mines experimental6 (5-ton) blast-furnace at Minneapolis, the Bureau extended the gas sampling on a commercial furnace to a number of planes between the tuyere level and the stock line. The sampling was conducted on a 300-ton furnace, making foundry iron, operated by the Central Iron and Coal Co., at Holt, Ala. The furnace was smelting Southern red and brown ores and nodules from pyrite sinter. Figure 3 is a vertical section of the furnace showing the six planes sampled."

Three samples of solid wastes generated by the non ferrous metallurgy were characterized. These residues contain up to 42 % of valuable metal compounds ( Cu, Pb and Zn ) and 23 %of toxic compounds t As, Hg, Cd and Se ). These sample were subjected to thermal treatments between 200 DC and 800 °C in controlled oxidizing. reducing and chlorinating atmospheres. Up to 99 % of As, Cd, Hg and Se were eliminated from these industrial wastes. Cu, Pb, and Zn compounds were concentrated in the treatments' residues of these samples. A Global Decontamination Factor' GDF ' was defined to measure the efficiency of the elimination of toxic elements and the recovery of valuable elements for a specific sample submitted to a given treatment. It seems that the thermal treatment in a reducing atmosphere was the most efficient in decontaminating these solids and the concentration of valuable elements. a.

With the aim of solving the large deformation problem of surrounding rock in coal mine roadways with a thin sand-mudstone interbed roof, transportation roadway 1603 in Haoyuan Mine was considered. The failure mechanism of surrounding rock was studied through comprehensive on-site investigations, borehole image analysis, mineral composition analysis, and other means. Numerical simulations were performed to determine the influence of roof layer thickness, lateral pressure coefficient, and coal rib strength on the stability of the interbedded roof. The main reasons for support failure and deformation of the roadway are softening and swelling of the sand-mudstone interbed roof upon exposure to water, insufficient support capacity of the roof due to the soft coal rib, an unreasonable support scheme, or poor construction quality, which can reduce the bearing capacity of surrounding rock. Based on our analysis, a control strategy was devised for a thin coal-mudstone interbed roof. The support scheme combines long and short cable support, strengthening of the coal rib to consolidate the roof, and partially shotcrete grout, and was found to improve the overall mechanical strength of surrounding rock and maintain the stability of the thin sand-mudstone interbed roof. The results of the numerical simulations and monitoring data indicated that the proposed support scheme effectively controls the deformation of the surrounding rock of thin sand-mudstone interbed roof of coal mine roadways while maintaining the safety and stability of the surrounding rock and supporting structure.

1. Estimates of reserves were made for three coal beds in Hamilton County the - Lantana, Sewanee, and Richland. Nine coal beds have been mined at one time or another in the county, but not enough information was available to estimate reserves in any beds other than the three given. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves for all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 53 million tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total 35 million tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics were insufficient for making an estimate conforming with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove re-serves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves determined by this investigation.

The Acid Drainage Technology Initiative-Metal Mining Sector (ADTI-MMS) has established a Pit Lake Committee to enhance the science and understanding for the long-term management of pit lakes. Participation in this new committee is from members of federal and state agencies, industry, and academia, including numerous individuals representing 10 states. Work has begun on a pit lake literature search and review, database, classification, and sampling and monitoring procedures document. Coordination with the International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) has been established. Future work will include preparing a prediction and assumption verification document, a report identifying variables upon which water quality is dependent, and an applied remediation technologies document, including an evaluation of the effects of backfilling.

The investigation to evaluate the reserves of coking coal is being made by the Bureau of Mines in three parts: (1) To estimate known (measured plus indicated) recoverable reserves of all coking coal; (2) to upgrade marginal coals through effective preparation; and, (3) to study the carbonizing properties of coal and coal blends not now widely used for metallurgical coke. This is the third of a series of reports giving results of studies by counties under part (1) of the investigation. This report covers Pike County, Ky., which comprises parts of the Harold, Williamson, Matewan, Gilbert, Pikeville, Regina, Hurley, Pound, and Clintwood quadrangles. (See fig. 1.) A base map for each bed in each quadrangle was made to the scale of 1 inch equals 1,200 feet. Maps of mines, locations of drill holes, bed and total coal thicknesses, and the outcrop of the bed were plotted on the maps. With all available data plotted, isopach lines were drawn to limit areas of known unmined reserves in beds 0 to 14 inches thick, 14 to 28 inches thick, 28 to 42 inches thick, and over 42 inches thick. These areas of coal reserves also were divided into "measured" and "indicated" categories. All areas in each thickness range and in each category, mined-out areas, areas excluded from the estimate but which may contain reserves based only on geologic inference, and areas outside of the outcrop were measured by planimeter on the base maps. Estimates of total reserves 14 inches and more thick and maps for individual beds were prepared from these data.
