"Information presented in this paper can be used to support deep soil mixing, subsurface grouting and slurry wall technology as sustainable construction technologies. Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) is the default cementitious material used by Deep Foundation Institute (DFI) Members for geotechnical work. Owners, engineers and contractors can contribute to the sustainability of a geotechnical project by increasing the use blended hydraulic cements and industrial byproducts to replace some of the OPC in mix designs. Sustainability is defined as the quality of not being harmful to the environment or depleting natural resources. Production of cementitious materials consumes natural raw materials and energy while also generating air emissions and waste. Life Cycle Assessments can be used to compare the relative environmental impacts of one cementitious material to another. Blended hydraulic cements (BHCs) are interground (or blended) mixtures of Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) with OPC. Commonly used SCMs include fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and limestone. Examples of industrial byproducts commonly used in geotechnical work include coal combustion residuals (CCR) (aka fly ash), and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS). Much of life cycle impact of these SCMs and industrial byproducts have already been borne by the industries that generated them. There is increasing awareness to LCA and sustainability of different materials used on projects. This is evident in the application of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. The savings in environmental impact with the use of SCMs and industrial byproducts can make proposed use of these materials in a geotechnical project more attractive in terms of sustainability. This paper presents (a) information that compares published life cycle assessment data of OPC, BHCs, and slag cement (SC) to illustrate the potential benefits to sustainability and (b) general strategies for positioning a geotechnical application, use, project design or cementitious material mix as a more sustainable alternative"

"This study was carried out to understand the impact of variation in material morphology on the efficacy of microwave pretreatment. Three different types of mineral matter – coal, iron ore and manganese ore – were treated with microwaves at different energy levels, from 180 to 900 W, for different time durations of one to five minutes. The treated samples were subjected to microscopic, milling and liberation studies. Coal is a porous and amorphous material with low dielectric constant, and grinding of the microwave-pretreated coal samples resulted in an 18.18 percent reduction in the 80 percent of passing particle size, or d80, and a 17.1 percent increase in carbon recovery. The microwave-pretreated soft and friable manganese ore samples showed a 47.82 percent reduction in d80 during grinding and higher manganese recovery of 42.46 percent during liberation analysis. The microwave pretreatment and milling of hard and banded iron ore reduced the d80 by 20.83 percent, but no improvement was observed in mineral liberation. Coal showed better results during treatment at lower energy levels of 180 W for one to three minutes, whereas the minerals needed higher energy of 900 W for five minutes. Particle size analysis indicated rapid size reduction up to an energy input of 25 Wh. This effect diminished with increased energy input.IntroductionComminution is an important unit operation in mineral processing plants for the purposes of size reduction and mineral liberation. But most comminution technologies are energy inefficient and only a small amount of energy is consumed in real size reduction, with the rest wasted. High-grade mineral resources have been exploited on a large scale for the last century, and the upgrading of low-grade resources is now required to fulfill the needs of industry. Pretreatment methodologies for comminution will play a crucial role in the upgrading of low-grade mineral resources. Researchers have studied various pretreatment methods to develop an energy-efficient and techno-economically viable solution to improve mineral liberation and product fineness with minimum energy consumption. Most of these studies were focused on the use of chemical additives, thermal, ultrasonic and microwave treatment, and electric disintegration (Klimpel and Austin, 1982; Norgate and Weller, 1994; Gaete-Garreton, Vargas-Hermandez and Velasquez-Lambert, 2000; Wilson et al., 2006; Kumar et al., 2010; Wang, Shi and Manlapig, 2011; Singh et al., 2012)."

"In tunnel blasting the most challenging objective is definitively obtaining the maximum advanceassociated to a minimum overbreak. Achieving 100% of advance with no overbreak is the targetchallenge by Chavimochic Consortium. Chavimochic Special Project is an irrigation system that extends throughout much of the coast of the La Libertad Region, on the north coast of Peru. In 2012, it began management for construction of the third and last stage of CHAVIMOCHIC to irrigate lands of Chicama Valley, North of Trujillo. This project of 13 Km (8 mi) of various tunnels, it's a combination of technology and daily optimization by experienced people, which allow to accomplish the objective. Achieving this advance with no overbreak provide a huge saving on time. This paper describes the method, technology used, and the results obtained on more than 600 blasts done with conventional initiation system on the first 3 km (1.86 mi)."

"Recovery of mineralized coarse particles is notoriously low in conventional concentrators that treat copper porphyry ores. The application of coarse particle flotation techniques has the potential to achieve comparable metallurgical performance at significantly coarser primary grind sizings. ALS Metallurgy has been conducting both internal research and commercial test programs to investigate the potential of Eriez HydroFloatTM technology on copper sulphide ores. Test data indicates that significant improvements in the recovery of copper sulphide bearing particles between 200µm to 850µm can be achieved using Hydrofloat technology compared to conventional flotation techniques. This paper summarizes the results from a selection of test programs that includes recovery by size data from both conventional flotation and HydroFloatTM tests. An explanation of the apparatus and test procedure will be given. Mineralogical analyses of the test products and characteristics that limit metallurgical performance will be discussed.Description of Apparatus and Test ProtocolThe HydroFloatTM laboratory cell is a clear plastic column with an internal diameter of 14 cm. Water and air are introduced to the cell through a circular manifold located in the lower portion of the cell. The cell has a conical bottom which directs slurry to a pinch valve that controls the discharge of tailings. Feed solids are introduced to the upper portion of the cell in slurry form. The cell is operated in a manner such that the manifold water creates a teeter bed zone of suspended solids in the middle portion of the cell. Tailings exit the bottom of the cell at a high pulp density, and most of the introduced water overflows the top of the column and is collected in a launder. Particles with a hydrophobic surface may attach to air bubbles that percolate through the teeter bed, rendering them sufficiently buoyant to be transported to the overflow launder.Three significant features of this arrangement enhance the potential to recover coarse, low grade particles by flotation techniques. Firstly, the hindered settling conditions created by the rising column of water allow coarse particles to become buoyant once attached to a modest sized air bubble. Secondly, the flow conditions within the cell are relatively quiescent compared to a conventional flotation cell that utilizes an agitator. This allows particles that have limited hydrophobic portions of their surface, due to a low content of exposed sulphide mineral, to maintain a somewhat fragile attachment to air bubbles long enough for successful recovery to the overflow. Finally, the absence of a froth phase at the top of the cell allows particles attached to air bubbles to immediately exit the vessel, reducing the potential to drop back into the pulp phase as bubbles burst or coalesce."

"Diaphragm walls are known as underground structural elements commonly used for retention systems and permanent foundation walls or elements. Of course they can also be used as deep groundwater barriers. This paper will focus on the construction work in an urban area like Sao Paulo. The Line 5 of Metro Sao Paulo is one of four network expansion projects undertaken at the same time. The projects will cover various areas of the city. The Line 5 on São Paulo’s south-side will be extended 7.1mi (11.5km) to serve 770,000 riders per day, stretching a total of 12.4mi (19.9km) along 17 stations. The extension line will facilitate access to the city’s central section and the commercial and hospital districts located along the line. The Brooklin Station, subject of this paper, had to be carried out in a special five shaft shape design, shaft diameter 131ft (40m) each, without using ground anchors. A focus will be taken on the special requirements of the installation of the arrows as well as on the specialties of installation for the shaft shaped layout. Therefore, it was required to install a 3.3ft (1,000mm) diaphragm wall using a specific layout especially in the connecting sections of the shafts, the so called arrows, to provide a bearing area for the struts. Maximum wall depth was about 121ft (37m); the total volume was about 20,060 cubic yard (15,337m³). The paper will describe the construction method and the sequence of activities required for the construction of this diaphragm wall using a combination of hydraulic grab and trench cutter system.INTRODUCTIONThe Line 5 Extension, in the city of Sao Paulo/Brazil, is currently the most important investment in public transport by Sao Paulo state’s government. It will connect the south part of the city to the city center, crossing through four other major METRO lines and stations, all currently in operation. The extension includes a new parking yard for the trains and 11 new stations. The Brooklin Station is one of the new stations and has a unique geometry of five secant shafts. The station should open and operate in 2016.The original design included constructing five secant shafts stabilized by two plastic slurry walls using conventional grab technology. One of them was to contain the contamination plumes in the neighborhood and the other for temporary support to enable the excavation of the shafts. The final retaining wall design was reviewed and changed to a concrete structural diaphragm wall. The reason of design change was as well the reduction of construction time of the shafts by half to meet the schedule as to avoid dewatering effects in a geological region characterized by Quaternary sediments and environmental contamination plumes. It was the first time that a trench cutter (hydromill) was used in such a situation in Brazil. The cutter increased the quality of the joints by overcutting, and decreased the probability of having seepage into the shafts. The cutter created a seepage barrier and avoided movement of contamination."

"Measurements obtained during load testing of two steel H-piles driven at a site in Northeastern Mississippi are discussed. The general site conditions, equipment used, testing procedures and results of the pile load tests are presented. Both piles were tested in compression and one of the piles was subsequently tested in tension. The piles were instrumented with strain gauges and extensometers to measure the mobilized soil resistance and pile movement. Three different “zero strain” conditions were used to determine the mobilized soil resistance and residual loads due to driving or a load cycle. It was concluded that the effect of residual loads on driven piles could be significant. Driving residual loads influenced the magnitude and distribution of the load transfer curves more than those due to a load cycle. Results of the tension test were impacted by the residual loads from the previous compression test performed on the same pile.INTRODUCTIONSeveral factors affect the performance of a deep foundation system including the subsoil conditions, loading settings, pile type and installation method. Residual stresses develop in piles particularly due to pile driving, but they are typically not accounted for in the analysis (Fellenius 2002). Siegel and McGillivray (2009) presented an assessment of residual loads measured during load testing of instrumented auger-cast-in-place (ACIP) piles. The magnitude and distribution of residual stresses along the pile shaft and toe depend on the pile installation method, previous load cycles and time effects. Poulos (1987) reported that residual load due to driving at the pile toe is independent of pile driving equipment and may significantly affect the results of a pile load test. Hunter and Davisson (1969) reported results of pile load tests performed in compression on fully instrumented piles driven in cohesionless soils along with a discussion of the effects of residual loads. Tension loads of about 445 kN (100 kips) were measured at the pile toe after driving. Unloading residual compression load at the toe was detected as “apparent” tension since the instrumentation was zeroed prior to the test. The researchers suggested a graphical approach to obtain the “corrected” load distribution curves considering that residual load will dissipate following the tension test. Holloway et al. (1975) conducted a study on the effect of residual stresses due to pile driving and developed a computer software that accounts for residual loads. Briaud and Tucker (1984) suggested a method to account for residual loads based on the results of 33 pile load tests performed in mostly cohesionless soils."

"It is critical to monitor the ground conditions during excavation and drilling of boreholes during construction to identify possible changes in the soil and rock formations. Drilled shafts are increasingly used as foundations to support structures, bridges and other facilities in geomaterials such as soft-rocks and hard clays. Locating the bottom of the borehole during construction with the required design strength is critical. Hence developing a simple device that could be easily adapted/used with the drilling tool was of interest in this study. Determining the shear strength of the geomaterial in the borehole and at various elevations including the bottom of the borehole can lead to better quality control of construction by identifying the various layers based on strength.In this study, a down-hole penetrometer (DHP-CIGMAT) was designed, built, calibrated and tested in the field to determine its effectiveness in measuring the strength of soil/soft rock in the boreholes. Based on limited field tests, linear correlations between geomaterial strengths and DHP-CIGMAT deflection have been developed. The DHP-CIGMAT can be used to identify soils and soft rocks.IntroductionIn-situ tests are increasingly used to determine the soil properties for geotechnical analysis and design of deep foundations (Ampadu and Arthur 2006; Hsu and Huang 1999). Static and dynamic penetration resistances have been used to classify and characterize subsoil (Ahmadi et al. 2005). The penetrometers evolved from the need of acquiring data on subsurface soils that could not be easily sampled by any other method. Laboratory testing undisturbed samples requires great care to avoid disturbance during handling, or systematical disturbance during testing, and it may be difficult to relate the laboratory test results to the in-situ properties of the soil (Sanglerat 1972). There is always a certain degree of disturbance to the samples because the confining pressures, which exist in the ground, are forcibly changed when the sample is collected."

"Refractory sulfidic ores consist of materials in which gold occurs finely disseminated within metallic sulfides or forming solid solutions, with pyrite and arsenopyrite being the two sulfides most commonly associated with gold. Typical cyanide operations show poor performance and require oxidative pretreatments to increase gold recovery. Pretreatment alternatives include roasting, pre-aeration, acidic and alkaline high pressure oxidation, and bacterial oxidation. The presence of arsenic, however, introduces a serious disadvantage to the use of roasting and bacterial leaching, while high pressure oxidation involves high capital costs. This work focuses on evaluating the effect of the addition of a carbon resin as a sulfur collector on the oxidation of different arsenopyrite concentrates under atmospheric tank leaching (ATL) conditions. The addition of the resin improved the oxidation of sulfides and favored the formation of elemental sulfur over the generation of sulfate. The use of AF5 in ATL resulted in higher gold recoveries under standard cyanide carbon-in-leach and thiosulfate leaching.INTRODUCTION Refractory sulfidic ores consist of materials in which gold occurs finely disseminated within metallic sulfides or forming solid solutions, with pyrite and arsenopyrite being the two sulfides most commonly associated with gold. The presence of arsenic, however, introduces a serious disadvantage to the use of roasting and bacterial leaching, while high pressure oxidation involves high capital costs. The use of carbonaceous materials to enhance the dissolution of sulfides is not novel, and leaching additives such as coal, activated carbon and carbon powder have been considered for the improvement of bioleaching, atmospheric leaching, and pressure oxidation leaching processes. However, this type of technology has been focused mainly on the recovery of copper from copper concentrates containing chalcopyrite with less attention paid to other sulfides."

"Currently, large amounts of wastewater containing boron are discharged from industries like coal-fired power plants. Although coagulation-sedimentation is widely employed for their treatment, only a little consideration has been given to its mechanism. An additional problem is that the produced sludge has poor solid-liquid separation. This study is focusing on coagulation-sedimentation using magnesium, examining the mechanism and improving the solid-liquid separation. First, the co-precipitation with magnesium hydroxide was conducted against high-concentration boron wastewater with 500 mg/dm3as B. Second, in order to improve the solid-liquid separation by maintaining high reactivity, low-crystalline magnesium oxide was synthesized from magnesium carbonate by calcination at 400–700°C. It was tested as an adsorbent of boron and compared to co-precipitation with magnesium hydroxide. Co-precipitation showed high removal capacity. X-ray diffraction (XRD) of the sludge revealed the presence of other compounds besides magnesium hydroxide. This result suggests that other processes play a role other than simple adsorption on to magnesium hydroxide, and provides a plausible explanation for the observed high separability. As for the adsorption, the synthesized magnesium oxide immobilized as much or more amount of boron than co-precipitation. Furthermore, the results of fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) suggested the residual magnesium carbonate improved solid-liquid separability due to its poor solubility.INTRODUCTIONBoron is used in various industrial applications. In glass industry, the addition of a little amount of boron into glass products can enhance heat-resistance and chemical-resistance. Semi-conductor industry also employs boron as dopant for silicon. From these industries, large amounts of wastewater containing boron have been discharged. Additionally, coal-fired power plants have been recently discharging highly concentrated boron wastewater because the amount of boron contained in coal has been increasing due to a gradual decrease of the quality of coal. Since boron is partially proved to be toxic for animals, plants, and human beings (WHO, 1998),the guideline of the World Health Organization limit the boron concentration in drinking water to 2.4 mg/dm3(WHO, 2009).Because boron does not precipitate from solutions by simply changing the pH, the removal could be carried by operations such as adsorption or ion exchange. However, since ion exchange is an expensive operation with relatively low capacity, it is not suitable to treat the large amounts of wastewater produced by heavy industries like the coal-fired power plants. Therefore, coagulation-sedimentation method is still widely used as a suitable alternative way."

"Ruskin Dam, located near Mission, British Columbia, was constructed in 1929 and 1930 and comprises of a concrete gravity dam structure founded on bedrock. At the right abutment, which consists mostly of dense to very dense sands and silt, the dam abuts against overburden soils, and connects to a cutoff wall system consisting of sloping concrete slabs. Significant seepage and piping issues were encountered during first filling of the reservoir in 1930. In 2012, BC Hydro, the owner of the dam, awarded a contract for the construction of seepage control measures at the right abutment, including construction of a plastic concrete cut-off wall extending upstream of the dam, a plastic concrete seepage training wall extending downstream of the dam, tie-in of the new cutoff wall to the dam, consisting of jet grouting of the soils adjacent to the dam to allow for the construction of the special cutoff connecting the cutoff wall to the dam, and construction of additional jet-grouting ground improvement downstream of the dam.Integral to the upgrade was the requirement for the special tie-in cutoff wall, consisting of a highly flexible, impermeable membrane to connect the concrete dam to the new, 1 m thick plastic concrete cutoff wall. The tie-in extends vertically into bedrock through the dam and jet grout columns constructed adjacent and beneath the overhanging portion of the dam at the right abutment. The membrane is required to survive the anticipated earthquake induced deformation between the dam and the abutment soils.This paper describes the processes used to develop a material suitable to meet the specified flexibility and permeability criteria, as well as the innovative construction techniques utilized to construct the slot and place the bituminous material within it. The final dimensions of the slot were in the order of 7 m long by 25 m deep by 0.17 m wide. The bituminous material was placed under a head of water which was required to maintain stability of the slot, and was placed at temperatures in excess of 120 degrees Celsius."

"In response to mine head grades declining and orebodies becoming more complex, Glencore Technology has developed an alternative method for recovering economic minerals once leached into solution, rather than relying on conventional flowsheet options. The method involves the precipitation and separation of base metals from solution with limestone or lime. The final grade of these precipitate is not usually high enough to attract favourable terms of sale due to dilution from gypsum and sulphate salts. A set of operating conditions have been developed to allow the separation of the base metal precipitate from gypsum by exploiting the difference in particle size. A high-grade oxide product can be easily separated from the gypsum stream at very low cost. This process was originally developed by Glencore for zinc and copper systems. This paper reports on the successful application to nickel and cobalt, and this process has significant advantages over the incumbent precipitation process utilising magnesia.INTRODUCTION During evaluation of transitional and oxide zinc ore deposits during the 1990’s, Noranda Inc. (now Glencore) developed a sulphate based ore leach process to extract zinc into solution. For flowsheet development, conventional schemes dictated that once the zinc was dissolved in an acidified solution it was recovered by means of purification or solvent extraction followed by electrowinning and casting to produce zinc ingots. The deposits Noranda evaluated were high grade but had a relatively short mine life (10 years) and economic analysis showed that the projects couldn’t sustain the investment of a full zinc refinery. Compounding this problem was the lack of power supply infrastructure and the high power cost in the region. Noranda then evaluated alternative means of recovering zinc from solution. Laboratory testwork showed that a high-grade zinc precipitate (+50 wt% Zn) could be produced as an oxide, carbonate or sulphide by contacting acidified zinc sulphate solution with a number of reagents including soda ash, sodium hydroxide, and sodium hydrogen sulphide. Economic evaluation showed that the cost of the reagents are prohibitive, especially when the final product is still a metal intermediate (ZnO, ZnCO3 or ZnS). Noranda then continued to focus on fine zinc oxide precipitation for supply into the automotive tyre industry as this product would attract favourable terms of sale as a premium on Special High Grade (SHG) zinc."

"The Functional Performance Equation calculated from a plant grinding survey defines two distinct ball mill circuit efficiencies and how they relate to total production rate through the target grind size. The survey data are also used to calculate a complete ball mill size distribution model, represented by the energy specific grinding rates, not just through the target grind size, but through all the size classes. Cyclone separation performance is represented by individual size recoveries to underflow. When these two unit operation performances are entered into the circuit modelling program (Streamline™), along with the circuit feed rate and size distribution, all the circuit survey size distributions and mass flows are perfectly regenerated by the program. The many issues associated with the historical Epstein (breakage-selection) models are eliminated. Once the circuit program is populated, pump and cyclone performance changes can be evaluated using a step-by-step procedure in order to maximize Classification System Efficiency. Mill water use and media sizing opportunities are also diagnosed in order to maximize Mill Grinding Efficiency at the size of interest. An example is provided. This circuit analysis and modelling system, and related training, is provided through a web-based application. INTRODUCTION Since its development (McIvor, 1988), the Functional Performance Equation for ball milling has facilitated new understanding of industrial circuit cause and effect relationships, leading to significant strides in operational performance. Success stories of this refreshing approach to plant circuit performance improvement are now too numerous to list. Finch and McIvor (circa 1986) also discovered that the Functional Performance “Mill Grinding Rate” at the size of interest was the same cumulative grinding rate that is calculated from mill feed and discharge size distributions using a first-order rate equation. By calculating these cumulative grinding rates for all screen sizes, a complete ball mill model is generated (as used by Finch and Ramirez, 1981). Others in industry, Hinde and Kalala (2009), for example, have noted the same. Lacking the complexity needed to maintain their interest, most researchers have ignored this model, broadly opting instead for Epstein’s (1948) characterization of grinding as a chemical reaction, combining “selection rate” and “breakage size distribution” functions. The much simpler ball mill model presented here has previously been incorporated into a proprietary circuit modeling program (McIvor, 2005) and used for plant improvement work (for example, see McIvor and Finch, 2007, and McIvor, 2014). Now, by combining this extremely business-friendly ball mill model with optimization criteria from Functional Performance Analysis, a circuit modeling system (including the needed supplementary steps to assure successful plant implementation of circuit design changes) is at the disposal of every plant metallurgist, grinding equipment/material provider, and circuit designer."

"Real time analysis of conveyed bulk materials can be used to improve process performance by reducing variability and upgrading ore quality through selective removal of increments of flow that do not meet appropriate selection criteria. This paper focusses on proven Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) and microwave transmission technologies used to representatively measure conveyed ore quality in real time so that meaningful decisions can be made between the mine and mill. This enables the effective removal by bulk diversion of small increments of conveyed flow such as waste, highly deleterious material or sub-economic material from the mill feed. Improved ore quality in plant feed optimises process performance, reduces processing costs and minimises tailings generation. Analysis is unaffected by particle size, dust, layering or segregation, mineralogy and belt speed. Technologies are explained and performance examples given from installations in copper and iron ore. The technology has been used successfully in bulk sorting for over twenty years typically using measured increments of a few minutes. Improvements in technology and calibration performance have resulted in accurate measurements over increments of thirty seconds and below.INTRODUCTION Ore quality variability exists on a number of scales. Block model grades represent a few hundred to many thousands of tonnes. Grade control at the mine occurs on a scale typically down to the size of a haul truck, which may be a few hundred tonnes. Highly variable ore quality is detrimental to process efficiency and effectiveness. Processing waste or low grade ore when higher quality feed is available represents a lost opportunity to generate higher revenues earlier in the operational life. Measuring ore quality accurately over short time increments during conveying enables small increments to be measured and diverted according to their quality. The paper explains the technology and benefits. Neutron irradiation techniques were considered potentially suitable for conveyed bauxite measurement by Beurton et al, 1995. Tran & Evans (2001) concluded there was no equivalent technology to Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) in terms of material penetration power. PGNAA was evaluated by Nelson & Riddle (2003) for possible use in the phosphate industry and recommended its use for further characterisation of the mine’s various ore types to improve stockpile allocation and grade control. Cottle (2007) discussed test work for an iron sinter application and Delwig et al (2011) described the successful installation in 2009 and performance of PGNAA for base-to-acid ratio control in sinter feed with the analyser output used to control lime addition. Geoscan (PGNAA) works very well on iron ore and can “improve control over what is happening in the plant” and that comfort can be provided in knowing that the product is on-spec according to Minnett (2010). PGNAA is not yet used in the minerals sector for tariff purposes as has occurred since 2000 with Coalscan (PGNAA) in coal (Minnett, 2010)."

"The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) undertook a program to replace four bridges along approximately 4 mi (6.4 km) of US 340 in Northwest Virginia. Two of these bridges, which span Compton Creek and the Norfolk Southern Railroad respectively, are the subject of this article. HDR provided roadway and structural design as well as geotechnical engineering services for the Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge while their subconsultant, Saeed Associates, provided structural engineering services in support of the HDR roadway and geotechnical team for the Compton Creek Bridge.The project is located in the Valley and Ridge Geologic Province of Virginia, on an alignment that is adjacent to the Shenandoah River. The project lies within the Beekmantown Group consisting of limestone and dolostone that are prevalent and prone to karstic activity in a band that passes through the project area and north into Central and Eastern Pennsylvania. This area has been impacted by karst limestone conditions where caves and sinkhole activity is common. Caves at Luray and Front Royal, located to the south and north of the project, respectively, are popular public attractions.Since the potential for variability of subsurface conditions can be, and often is, greater in karst terrain, the need to develop a design that provides as much flexibility as possible during construction, and then to be prepared to efficiently review and respond to construction questions is heightened. Coordination and communication among the design staff, VDOT’s design and construction staff, and the contractor was a key factor in completion of this project.Compton Creek BridgeThe alignment for the new Compton Creek Bridge is located about 125 ft (38 m) west of the existing bridge, placing it between that bridge and the existing Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge. No information about the foundations was available for the existing bridges. Borings in the Compton Creek valley encountered extensive voids (some clay filled and some open) with numerous boulders, rock ledges and pinnacles, particularly on the north side of the creek. Geophysical and geotechnical investigations indicated that below a poor and variable upper zone of rock was a layer of more competent and consistent limestone, which appeared to contain little or no voids."

"Advanced data acquisition and process modelling technology provides online data and decision support about different aspects of the resource extraction process. Real-time approaches have recently been applied to utilize the value of this information for improved production control in mineral resource extraction in different operational set ups including coal, polymetallic ore and gold deposits. The key concept of these approaches promotes the change in paradigm from discontinuous intermittent process monitoring to a continuous process and quality management system in the resource extraction process. The framework includes a real-time feedback control loop that rapidly links online material characteristics data acquired during extraction at the mining face, during material handling and processing with a sequentially up-datable resource model. This will allow near real-time optimization of decisions related to long-term planning, short-term sequencing and production control. The contribution reviews recent developments in the three main constituents sensor based material characterisation, rapid updating of grade control models and simulation based optimization for improved production control. Technological readiness is assessed and critical gaps for further technology development are identified. The value added is illustrated by means of selected case studies. INTRODUCTION With the depletion of known and established mineral reserves, the decrease in head grades and the continuing demand of mineral raw materials by the modern society, future exploitation will move towards extraction of deposits under geologically more complex conditions. Complex deposits are characterized by a low continuity in grade, presence of deleterious elements such as arsenic and high irregularity in the geometry of the ore boundaries. The profitable exploitation of such deposits becomes significantly more challenging. To be able to better utilize such unconventional mineral resources of the future, smart autonomous mining systems are needed, which integrate local exploration of spatially varying material characteristics in–situ and have the ability to follow and extract the pay zones in the ore body while minimizing dilution (Buxton and Benndorf, 2013). The main barriers to overcome for the successful economic exploitation are: • effective grade control which will maximize resource potential along the whole value chain, • minimization of handling zero-value material introduced by dilution, thus • reducing unnecessary expenditure of energy and financial resources and • management and control of the geological uncertainty due to limited information available,"

"After the mass closures of entire coal mine districts in Europe at the end of the last century, a new phenomenon of surface movement was observed—an upward movement. Although most surface movement (i.e., subsidence) occurs in the months and years after mining by the longwall method, surface movement still occurs many decades after mining is terminated. After the closure and flooding of underground excavations and surrounding rock, this movement is reversed. This paper focuses on quantifying the upward movement in two neighboring coal mines (Winterslag and Zwartberg, Belgium). The study is based on data from a remote sensing technique: interferometry with synthetic aperture radar (INSAR). The results of the study show that the rate of upward movement in the decade after closure is about 10 mm/year on average. The upward movements are not linked directly to the past exploitation directly underneath a location. The amounts of subsidence at specific locations are linked mainly to their positions relative to an inverse trough shape situated over the entire mined-out areas and their immediate surroundings. Local features, such as geological faults, can have a secondary effect on the local variation of the uplift. The processes of subsidence and uplift are based on completely different mechanisms. Subsidence is initiated by a caving process, while the process of uplift is clearly linked to flooding. INTRODUCTION After the mass closures of entire coal mine districts in Europe at the end of the last century, a new phenomenon of surface movement was observed—upward movement in the area above the past exploitation and in the immediate surroundings. Of course, most surface movement (i.e., subsidence) occurs in the months and years after mining by the longwall method (Peng, 1986). This downward movement continues to occur at a smaller rate many decades after mining has been terminated when the water in the underground excavations is pumped to the surface. This is the case as long as a mine is in operation. However, after the closure and flooding of the underground excavations and the surrounding rock, this movement is reversed, and the surface is uplifted. A total uplift of about half a meter has been recorded to date. This phenomenon has been described in several different coal basins in Europe, for example, in Belgium (Devleeschouwer et al., 2008), France (Samsonov, d’Oreye, and Smets, 2013), Germany (Baglikow, 2011), the Netherlands (Caro Cuenca, Hooper, and Hanssen, 2013), and Poland (Preusse, Kateloe, and Sroka, 2013). To date, research has focused mainly on understanding the phenomenon (e.g., Herrero et al., 2012) and identifying general trends, whereby the link with the rise in water levels is an important issue (Caro Cuenca, Hooper, and Hanssen, 2013). The most accepted explanation is linked to the swelling of clay minerals in the argillaceous rocks in the coal strata (Herrero et al., 2012). Without doubt, the full explanation is complex, and swelling is probably not the only cause of the residual movement. Most coal strata rock is weakened upon contact with water. The increase in water pressure also results in a decrease in the effective stress. Both aspects facilitate the fracturing of rock, which normally would result in further subsidence. However, decreases in the effective stresses also result in the relaxation or expansion of the rock, which induces an upward movement (Fjar et al., 2008). All of these aspects, including the long-term residual subsidence due to compaction under dry conditions, result in a net upward movement. The phenomenon discussed here is clearly different from the upsidence, sometimes observed on other continents (e.g., in Australia, Galvin, 2016). When upsidence occurs, the rock near the surface bends and buckles upwards due to the overstressing of the floors of the valleys."

"This paper presents a critical review of the fragmentation data obtained from some large open pit copper and gold mines. Database ncludes 35 mines with Uniaxial Compressive Strength values ranging from 19 MPa to 227 MPa (2756 psi to 32923 psi). Variation in the fragmentation data and the causes are discussed in detail. Quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) in drilling and blasting was shown to have significant impact on fragmentation. In addition, controllable blast design parameters including drill pattern, powder factor, blast timing, stemming length, etc as well as the large blast sizes havesignificant potential to improve fragmentation. Feed size requirements of crushing and grinding circuits were discussed in detail. The paper discusses the effects of different size fractions (top size, 80 %passing size and % passing 10 mm (0.5 in)) on the downstream processes and the role of the fragmentation model in the mine to mill process. Blast domains based on rock strength and structure canbe established by using a fragmentation model which is calibrated using measured fragmentation data. This allows the blast engineer to compensate for changing rock characteristics and stabilize the ROMfragmentation size and result in increased crusher and mill throughput. Two case studies were presented to demonstrate the benefits achieved in downstream processes. Main benefits were reduced downtime at crusher circuits, improved mill throughput as well as reduced total operating cost. A simple relationbetween uniaxial compressive strength and powder factor was proposed using the database for the optimized mines as a guideline to allow site engineers to compare their sites against the other sites."

"Sublevel caving in Malmberget mine results in mining-induced surface deformation. One of the currently mined orebodies is the Printzsköld orebody. As mining deepens there is need to assess the behaviour of the cave formed in the subsurface above this orebody. Numerical analysis was used to assess the effects of extraction to deeper levels and perform strength parametric studies. Stress redistribution was studied, and the results showed high stress buildups in the hangingwall and the crown pillar. Two failure mechanisms have been identified – shear and tensile. Reducing cohesion by 50% increased the area of the yielded zone by more than 100% in the hangingwall.IntroductionThe Malmberget mine is owned and operated by the Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) mining company. Iron ore is extracted by large-scale sublevel caving. The mine comprises a total of 20 orebodies, about 10 of which are in production today (Figure 1). The mine is located in the municipality of Gallivare, about 100 km north of the Arctic Circle (Figure 2).Successful sublevel caving requires progressive caving of the orebody after initial blasting. This results in caving of the hangingwall, sometimes all the way to surface, resulting in surface deformation. As mining progresses to deeper levels a larger area is affected by deformation. Over the years, extraction from the Malmberget orebodies has led to deformation of the ground surface, affecting residential areas and existing infrastructure.Forecasting the caving process is not straightforward as it can be rapid or slow, depending on the rock mass conditions, stress conditions, the failure mechanisms at work, etc. Moreover, several of the orebodies in Malmberget are non-daylighting, which makes reliable caving analysis even more difficult, primarily since there is less available experience from such cases. "At present scenario, there has been an increasing demand in the usage of blend coal in power sector; regardless of how, specific knowledge on burning and ignition characteristics and their interactive effects is stingy. In this work a detailed investigation was therefore taken up to study in detail the combustion characteristics of selected coal samples and their blends. Certain parameters were believed to have significant effects on combustion characteristics of individual coal and their blend. Major parameters identified for this purpose included proximate analysis, combustion conditions, heating rate, reaction regions, blending ratios, ignition condition, reactivity (or reaction rate) and burnout temperatures. With the help of these parameters, thermal features and reaction kinetics of the individual and blended samples were investigated through a qualitative and quantitative thermo-gravimetric analysis of two different individual coals and their blend carried out in an oxygen atmosphere from ambient to 800 0C at a constant heating rate of 10 K/min. A significant difference in terms of rate of mass loss with temperature correlated from Arrhenius expression along with coal-coal blend interactions and deviation from their expected behaviour, have been observed between the kinetics of individual and blend samples, the latter showing better ignition performance and comprehensive combustion phase. It was also found that particles having the lowest percentages of volatile matter and ash could possibly be blended with particles having high ash and volatile matter to meet the required burning condition which can be effective in terms of cost savings, improved fuel economy, reduced undesirable exhaust emissions and improved safety of coal burning equipment. Experimental results further indicated that individual samples and coal blend samples have different combustion features in terms of residue left, peak temperatures and activation energies. Thermodynamic activation parameters such as activation energy, pre-exponential factor and order of reaction were computed from the thermal data using the modified form of non-isothermal methods. INTRODUCTION Coal has been the most significant source of energy for India and would remain so at least for the next few decades. About 60-65% of the electricity produced in India is from coal fired power plants. Indian coal is of drift origin and of high ash content. Ash content of the coal burnt in power plants in India is in the range of 30-45%, most of it being Run-of-Mine coal. Most of the power plants in India source their coal from number of mines, most common being multiple sourcing. Usually coal from each source [1] is burnt separately. For various reasons mostly associated with logistics, burning of blended coal is rarely practiced. Blending of coal is practised mainly for improving the quality of available coal and meets the shortage of coal supply. Blending technique is generally practised in power industries to reduce the cost of power generation along with mitigating combustion performance or slagging problem ensuring consistency in as fired coal quality and also for environmental compliance. Blending good quality imported coal can improve coal quality and helps in preserving indigenous coal resources for longer period [2]. Use of blended coal shall reduce load on all boiler components (Mill, CHP, Boiler, AHP) & reduce O&M cost and increase the availability. The main purpose of blending is to get a blended as fired coal having ash, volatile matter and gross calorific value close to design coal and the two coals are to be blended in such ratio proportions that resultant coal blend have desired ash, volatile matter and gross calorific value [3]. For a coal to be blended certain parameters have to be considered to get compatibility with respect to combustibility ( Burn ability) of coal, grindability ( HGI), ash fusion behavior, swelling characteristics of coal, need to be checked"

"A selective chlorination process using cuprous chloride (CuCl) was investigated for producing high-grade chalcocite (Cu2S) from chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) feed. The chalcopyrite feed was reacted with CuCl in the presence or absence of sulfur (S) at temperatures between 900 and 1,100 K for five hours under an argon gas atmosphere. The experimental results indicate that iron (Fe) was selectively removed from the chalcopyrite feed as ferrous chloride (FeCl2) at 1,100K and the mass percentage of Fe thus decreased from 31.5 percent in the feed to less than 0.05 percent in the residue, under certain conditions. As a result, high-grade Cu2S was obtained from chalcopyrite in a single step. This new selective chlorination of chalcopyrite using CuCl as a chlorinating agent is therefore feasible for producing high-grade Cu2S.IntroductionCurrently, blister copper (Cu) is commercially produced from sulfide ores by pyrometallurgical methods. These methods entail matte smelting and converting, with the removal of iron (Fe) and sulfur (S) as slag — mainly Fe2SiO4 — and sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas, respectively.In the pyrometallurgical method, as shown in Fig. 1 (Schlesinger et al., 2011), Fe is removed through two steps at high temperatures of around 1,500 K to reduce the loss of Cu during slag formation. However, the slag still contains 1 to 8 percent Cu. Therefore, Cu in the slag is recovered by slag treatment processes, after which the concentration of Cu in the slag decreases to around 0.4 to 1.3 percent. Although Cu is recovered, the slag that had undergone the treatment processes is difficult to use as a feedstock for ironmaking owing to the small amount of Cu remaining in the slag (Schlesinger et al., 2011).In addition, large amounts of SO2 gas are generated by the oxidation of S in the current Cu production process. The SO2 gas generated is captured and used to produce sulfuric acid (H2SO4). However, despite the development of SO2 gas-capture technologies, the emission of SO2 gas is still a problem in terms of environmental considerations.Several studies had been carried out in the past to overcome the drawbacks of the current process. The extraction of Cu from sulfide ores using a chlorination process is one alternative that had been investigated by several researchers. Most chlorination processes used chlorine gas (Cl2) as a chlorinating agent at temperatures between 573 and 1,023 K under an inert atmosphere (Donaldson and Kershner, 1962; Olsen et al., 1973; Kumar, Li and Warren, 1985, 1987; Kanari et al., 1999; Kanari, Gaballah and Allain, 2001)."
