The metal and nonmetallic mineral mines (excluding coal mines) of the United States had a more favorable safety record in 1935 than in any year except 1931 and 1932 since annual statistics of accidents first became available in 1911. The accident rate was even lower than that for 1911, when the recorded rate probably did not reflect all of the accidents that actually occurred because many companies had not yet begun to keep complete records of accidents, especially those causing only minor injuries, and when, therefore, the number of accidents revealed by the companies' reports to the Bureau of Mines was probably not as complete as that reported for later years. Compared. with 1911, the accident rate covering fatal and nonfatal injuries in. 1935 decreased 13 percent. Compared with 1925, when the rate was the highest ever reported, the rate for 1935 decreased 47 percent and compared with 1934, 7 percent. The progress in safety which the mines of the country made in 1935 was not confined to any section or mining region; it was shared by a majority of the mining States and applied to underground mining operations, to open-pit mining, and to work at surface shops and yards. The rate for underground mining declined 8 percent from 1934; the rate for open-pit mining declined 14 percent, and that for surface shops and yards 12 percent.

The Australian Gas Light. Company was established in 1837, the first gas being sent out from the Kent Street Works, then the headquarters, in 1841. Mortlake Works were opened in 1886, and has since grown to the vast undertaking inspected by members of the Institute.The Kent Street Works were closed in 1921. Continuing the systematic investigation of the influence of elements on the properties of lead(1). If the effects of additions of copper (up to 0.3%) on Port Pirie lead have now been determined in so far as creep rate is concerned.The results in the present paper contain also a survey of the influence of copper on the micro-structure of lead, a feature which has not appeared in the previous papers of this series. Further, it has now become known that creep is but little related to the more usually determined properties such as hardness and tensile strength. Since, however, these properties are of considerable importance in connection with the fabrication and use of this metal. Brinell hardness determinations have also been made and are here included.It is becoming more and more realised also that to be useful, creep data should refer to stresses of the order of those used in practice. This is due to the fact that as soon as deformation takes place, the properties of the metal are automatically changed. Lead does, of course, creep during industrial use, and probably (in lead chamber construction for example) extensions of the order of 5%...

This is the sixth in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior. The first report gave data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ The present report covers 54 brands of gasoline represented by 1,480 samples plus those from the Pacific Coast, which were averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were submitted. In some areas reports were received from 8 to 10 companies on the same brands of gasoline, whereas in other areas only one company reported on a brand. Thus, it can be seen that some of the data are more representative than others. The inclusion of data from several cities within some of the districts has improved the report by reducing the number of brands reported by only one company. Several changes have been made in the districts. A new district, Memphis, Tenn., has been formed to include Arkansas and western Tennessee. The Rocky Mountain areas have been divided into three sections. Salt Lake City and Denver form the Middle Rocky Mountain district; Laramie, Wyo., Idaho, Montana, and Spokane, Wash., are included in the North Rocky Mountain district, and Arizona, New Mexico, and El Paso, Tex., have been combined to represent the South Rocky Mountain district. The Cleveland district has been expanded to include Ohio an,"- Indiana. Eastern Pennsylvania, Maryland, and northern Virginia are included in the Washington (D. C.) district. The Atlanta district includes Georgia, South Carolina; Mississippi, and northern Florida.

NO. 6 shaft at Dome Mines, Limited, is an internal shaft going down vertically from the sixteenth, or 2,000-ft., level to the twenty-ninth, or 4,000-ft., level, with loading station and sump below this. It is located approximately 4,600 feet east of No. 3 shaft, the latter being Dome's main shaft through which ail ore, men, and material are handled. The decision to sink this shaft was made in May, 1935, and work was commenced almost immediately. To reach the site of the new shaft, 3,100 feet of cross-cutting, and 1,400 feet of slashing to widen existing cross-cuts, was necessary. On account of the long haul and the large amount of material to be handled, trolley haulage was decided upon and installed as soon as possible to facilitate the removal of waste rock from the crosscut and other necessary excavations. Figure 1 shows a cross-section of the cross cut and the manner in which the trolley wire is supported and guarded. For hanging each individual cross-piece, two holes are drilled into the roof and filled with snug-fitting wooden plugs. Into these, %-in. ragged hanger bolts arc driven by means of a stoper. The bolts are of various lengths to allow for irregularities in the face of the rock, and they have sufficient thread to permit several inches of adjustment for proper alignment of the cross-pieces. These hangers are spaced at 8-ft. intervals except at the curves, where 5-ft. spacing is used. A 2 in. by 6 in. cedar plank is fastened to the cross-pieces directly over the centre of the track. To this the trolley-wire supports are bolted, and 1 in. by 10 in. cedar boards are nailed on each side to act as guards. Two power-supply cables, one telephone cable, and one .Y2-in. conduit lighting circuit are also supported on the trolley-wire hangers, as shown in Figure 1. A 20-in. ventilating pipe and a 10-in. air line are placed as shown, thus acting as a guard to prevent workmen from walking on the track.

At its Port Kembla Plant, Australian Fertilizers Ltd. manufactures Superphosphate and other Phosphatic Fertilizers.Phosphate Rock is received from Nauru and Ocean Island. It contains water insoluble tri-calcium phosphate, Ca3(PO4), to an average of about 86%.It is crushed to pass a 20-mesh x 26-gauge woven wire screen, and is then treated with Sulphuric Acid to give the product Superphosphate with a water solubie prosphate content of 20.5%, estimated as P205. Sulphuric Acid is made by the chamber process. Three sets of chambers are installed, on,e five-chamber set of timber frame work construction and the other two of more recent date, each with four chambers of steel frame work construction. A fourth chamber set is now being built.Sulphuric Acid is delivered for use. at about 70% H2S04, the strength depending upon the rock used.Mixing - The crushed rock and sulphuric acid are mixed in weighed and measured proportions respectiyely in one-ton batches in revolving cast fron pans, mechanically stirred. The mixture, while still slurry, is run into a closed horizontal concrete cylinder (den) where, with the completion of the chemical reaction, it rapidly sets as Superphosphate.Approximately fifty batches are required to fill a den. When full, the den is opened ana the mass cut out by a revolving cutter. The product is elevated and conveyed to any required position in the Superphosphate storage shed, where it dries and matures.Despatch - As required, the Superphosphate is excavated by a two ton grab and conveyed from the matured "dump" to bagging units where it is disintegrated, screened and bagged at twelve bags to the ton. The filled !Jags are closed by machine and delivered to railway trucks immediately.Mixed Fertilizers - Sulphate of Ammonia, Sulphate and Muriate, of Potash, and Blood and Bone are mixed with Superphosphate and thoroughly incorporated to give different mixtures to meet special plant requirements.

The petroleum-refining industry established a new record in fuel efficiency at refineries in 1936, when 597,000 B. t. u. of heat were required to refine a barrel of crude oil, compared with an average of 615,000 B. t. u. in 1935 (see fig. 1). The principal factor in the "indicated gain in fuel efficiency at refineries in 1936 was an increase in crude runs of 11 percent over 1935. A large part of the heat utilized at refineries is consumed elsewhere than under stills, or in ways quite independent of crude-oil distillation. In other words, as the operating ratio (crude runs divided by capacity) for refineries increases toward the maximum of 100 percent, the fuel requirements show progressively smaller increases and the average E. t. u. consumption per barrel of crude refined declines.

In the interest of safety in mining, the Bureau of Mines recommends: 1. That cages or skips used for hoisting or lowering men in vertical and steeply inclined shafts shall be provided with safety catches designed to prevent falling of the cage or skip if the hoisting rope or other connections break; and 2. That cars used. for hoisting or lowering men with ropes in slopes shall be provided with arresting devices, other than ordinary brakes, that come into action if the hoisting rope or other connections break. In presenting this decision, it is recognized that the principal requirements for safety in hoisting operations are the use of hoisting ropes of ample size and strength to provide a factor of safety recognized as adequate by the best en engineering practice; their proper care, protection against undue wear and corrosion, and frequent inspection; and immediate removal of ropes from service when inspection or tests cast doubt upon their further safe serviceability.

THE McIntyre mine is in the Pearl Lake section of the Porcupine gold area. The rocks are Keewatin lavas intruded by quartz porphyries and albitite dikes of Algoman age. Gold-bearing quartz veins are found in the Keewatin rocks near the porphyry stocks. The whole area has been highly compressed by forces acting along a N. 20°W. line. These forces folded the Keewatin rocks before the intrusion of the Algoman rocks, and later schisted both the Keewatin and Algoman rocks. Vein fractures were developed after the folding but before the development of the schist by the compres-sive forces being locally broken up into couples. These couples were set up by the differential resistance to deformation of porphyries and basalts, and also by the competency of the dacites and incompetency of the tuffs and fragmental rocks. During the important period of vein formation, two zones were developed-an inner productive zone in which the quartz veins are ankerite-bearing and an outer barren zone in which the quartz veins are calcite-bearing. The vein solutions originated in the same magma that supplied the albitite dikes.

This is one of a series of information circulars describing mining and milling methods being published by the Bureau of Mines. The Summitville Consolidated Mines, Inc., is the only company now active at Summitville. Since the holdings of the company include those of most of the former producers of the camp, the paper virtually becomes a description of the Summitville district. The field data were collected from August 23 to 28, 1937. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The writer gratefully acknowledges his indebtedness to H. F. Detrick, president, and Edward Thornton, general manager of the company for their cooperation in making this paper possible. WE recently received from Professor A. C. Lane, Emeritus Professor of Geology and Mineralogy, Tufts College, Mass., and a Corresponding Member of this Institute, a very interesting account of some recent developments in radioactive methods of determining the age of minerals and, therefore, of the rocks in which they occur. It deals in particular with studies of the minerals of certain pegmatite dykes on the Huron claims and Bear claims in southeastern Manitoba, which, the results indicate, are among the oldest rocks of the earth's crust. The following article presents a non-mathematical summary of Professor Lane's paper . . It will be noted that he is anxious to obtain suitable samples of certain minerals and rocks for further age studies. We hope some o our members may be able to supply him with the material he needs. It may be well to explain briefly how the age determinations are made. Uranium is continually breaking down, or disintegrating in successive steps through radium, etc., to a final product which is lead (uranium-lead), and the rate at which this change takes place is known. Minerals containing uranium will therefore contain lead also, and the lead-uranium ratio mul-tiplied by a certain factor (approximately 7 ,600) will give the age of the mineral in millions of years. Thorium also disintegrates at a known rate to give lead (thorium-lead) as a final product, and the age of a mineral containing thorium can thus be calculated from the lead-thorium ratio. Thorium breaks down more slowly than uranium. In unit time, one gram of thorium produces about as much lead as 0.36 grams of uranium.-ED.

IN most instances the fluids produced from underground reservoirs have been described as they appear at the surface, and usually it has not been necessary to distinguish between surface and reservoir phases. More recently it has become imperative to recognize the fact that changes in phase may occur between the reservoir and the receiving unit. The simple terminology of "wet" and "dry" gases and "crude petro-leum oil" served our needs fairly well in the shallow, low-temperature and low-pressure fields. It has been left to the legislatures, regulatory com-missions, and courts to decide whether a field is or was a gas field, an oil field, or both. This they have done by direct definition and also by implication. For example, in Texas:1 (d) The term "gas well" is any well (a) which produces natural gas not associated or blended with crude petroleum oil at the time of production, or (b) which produces more than one hundred thousand (100,000) cubic feet of natural, gas to each barrel of crude petroleum oil from the same producing horizon, or (c) which produces natural gas from a formation or producing horizon productive of gas only encountered in a well bore through which crude petroleum oil is also produced through the inside of another string of casing. (e) The term "oil well" is any well which produces one (1) barrel or more of crude petroleum oil to each one hundred thousand (100,000) cubic feet of natural gas.

The development, manufacture, and sale of small coal stokers suitable for domestic use has provided a new industry in the United States at a time when badly needed. Sales of domestic stokers have doubled each year for the past 4 rears, until in 1936 probably more than 90,000 such units were put into use. According to reports of the Bureau of the Census 79,543 residential stokers were sold in the first 10 months of 1937 by 109 manufacturers. This rapid expansion has made itself felt in the coal-mining industry. The smaller sizes of coal, either in a sized or slack condition, are in greater demand; as a result, preparation practices at the mines have had to be revised so that, in many instances, lump coal is being crushed to meet the demand for stoker coal. This situation in turn has necessarily resulted in a realignment of price schedules for the different sizes. One of the first underfeed stokers small enough for domestic use was developed at Seattle, Wash., in 1912; in 1916, a small overfeed stoker was developed at Seattle. These two types are generally considered to represent the beginning of the present domestic stoker industry in the United States. A careful inquiry as to the number of domestic stokers now installed in the Seattle area, made by C. R. Pate, who was detailed to this duty by the Works Progress Administration, indicated that probably 7,000 domestic stokers are being used in this area for residential heating. Most of these stokers axe of the overfeed type, although in the past 2 years the underfeed type has made rapid gains.

[The growing importance of the Sundence (Jurassic) formation an a source of oil, in the Rocky Mountain area has prompted the making of a series of porosity determinations of core samples collected. from the reservoir sands of the Lance Creek oil field, Niobrara. County, Wyo. These analyses are preliminary to a stud of fluid and energy relations in the Basal Sundance reservoir of that field, and the determinations of porosity will be used in subsequent studies requiring, calculations of the volumetric capacity of the reservoir and estimation of the reserves of oil and gas. However, the porosity characteristics an of the Sundance sands in the Lance Creek field are factory that affect the solution of many current practical problems of development and operation. Primarily for that reason but also because it is recognized that porosity values of different oil-production sands are of widespread interest throughout the industry, the results of the initial work have been presented in tabular and graphic form with no attempt to evaluate their significance as they relate to the production history of the field.]

[Early in 1936 the Interstate Oil Compact Commission and other groups interested in forecasts of demand .for petroleum requested the Bureau of Mines to make a physical inventory of crude-oil stocks in the United States. Accordingly, the 74th Congress appropriated funds for conducting such a survey during the fiscal year ended June 30, 1937. This circular presents part I of a series of papers of a review of the literature on air conditioning in mines, with particular reference to the health, safety, and efficiency of miners. It deals with the physiological aspects of exposure to air contaminated by organic matter, noxious and toxic gases, and dusts that emanate from various sources in underground workings; part II will discuss the relation of abnormal mine temperatures and humidities to the health and efficiency of minors; and part III will describe theoretical and practical methods of air conditioning mines to correct or alleviate the conditions mentioned and will discuss the results attained by some of the systems now in use in various parts or the world.

The selection of Sydney and Port Kembla for the First Ordinary Meeting of the Institute for 1938 was, no doubt, a recognition of the celebrations marking the 150th Anniversary of the first settlement of this country. In selecting a theme for my Presidential Address, I propose to depart from the precedents of my distinguished predecessors, as I feel that this year of celebration is the natural year for a brief review of the history and progress of the Institute.In July, 1892, the Amalgamated Mining Managers' Association of Australasia held its Annual Conference in Ballarat, Victoria, when Mr. Uriah Dudley, who attended as a delegate from Broken Hill, brought forward the advisability of the formation of an Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Mr. Dudley was authorised to take such action as he thought fit, and the result was the formation of a Provisional Committee in Broken Hill of men who were mostly members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. Broken Hill was therefore really the birthplace of the Institute.A circular headed Broken Hill, September, 1892, with the signature of Uriah Dudley, Acting Hon. Natural petroleum gas occurring in the oil-bearing reservoirs is found to exist either as free gas associated with the oil and/or in solution in the oil. In some virgin fields practically no free gas is encountered under the reservoir conditions of pressure and temperature, although in other fields a considerable section of the "pay" horizon is occupied by free gas. In other words, a given oil field may or may not have a gas cap before the exploitation takes place. However, when the reservoir pressure is reduced to a point below the critical saturation pressure by withdrawals of fluids from the producing formation, the gas dissolved in the oil inevitably begins to come out of solution and becomes free gas. Under the controlled methods of production and drilling, a portion of this gas is produced with the oil to the surface and a portion of it remains within the reservoir to accumulate at higher structural levels toward which it migrates by virtue of its low specific gravity. The rate of growth of a gas cap in a given structure depends primarily upon the rate of decline in the reservoir pressure. If the rate of pressure decline is rapid, the gas cap likewise will grow rapidly. On the other hand, shrinkage in the gas-cap area was noted in some fields in which reservoir pressures wereincreasing. Determination of Gas-oil Contact and Thickness of Gas Cap The gas-oil contact can be conveniently located in the process of drilling a well and by electrical logging. However, very little can be found in the petroleum literature concerning methods of predetermining gas-oil contacts in producing reservoirs. Therefore, the writer feels justified in describing briefly a simple, workable, and inexpensive method of determining gas-oil contacts and outlining the limits of gas-cap areas in a field where such knowledge may be essential for efficient production and development operations. The method involves the determination of the following data: (I) Structural data, such as the depth or elevation of the top' of "pay" horizon; (2) reservoir pressures; (3) tubing and casing pressures at the well head; (4) static oil-pressure gradient; (5) static gas-pressure gradient. These data can be secured with a minimum of expense, inasmuch as the
