Curtailment of bauxite importation by enemy activities during World War II focused attention on the necessity of developing domestic deposits of aluminous materials. Large quantities of aluminum ores such as kaolin, siliceous bauxites, high-iron bauxites, anorthosite, and diaspore clays are available but not readily amenable to Bayer processing because of excessive impurities. The Bayer process, which is the only commercial method in use in the United States for producing metallurgical-grade alumina, requires a high Al2O3 bauxite relatively low in SiO2 and Fe2O3. The Bureau of Mines was charged by Congress to investigate processes for the production of alumina from these low-grade ores. One part of the program was an investigation, in the laboratory and pilot plant, of the recovery of alumina by the lime-soda sinter process. Ores comprising kaolin, diasporic clays, anorthosite, and siliceous bauxites have been investigated and studied in the laboratory and pilot plant, and a series 'of reports covering these investigations has been prepared.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The tactual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigations beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the twelfth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate halt-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that halt township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

To follow the development of the central crushing plant it is necessary briefly to outline the history of the Lake View and Star Limited. This Company, when first constituted, took over the properties of the Lake View Consols, Hannan's Star, and Chaffers Gold Mines.The Company then treated the ore won from these leases at two dry crushing, all-roasting plants, situated adjacent to each other on the site of the present Chaffers Treatment Plant that handles all the ore won by the Lake View and Star Ltd.SUbsequent to the initial union of the three companies mentioned, the Ivanhoe Gold Corporation and the Golden Horse Shoe Ltd. were absorbed. Still later, and after the original crushing plant was erected, the Associated Gold Mines of Australia were purchased.A very extensive development policy was adopted by the Company's management in the late 1920's, and as the underground programme progressed, it became eVident that a large treatment plant would be required. Wet milling of the ore, followed by flotation, was considered desirable, and the necessity of a central crushing plant capable of producing a feed that could be handled by the wet ball mills attached to it was obvious.At this time, each of the properties absorbed had its own crushing station, situated adjacent to the respective...

This paper describes briefly the topography and geology of the region where the mica-bearing pegmatites are found and discusses prospecting, the quality of the mica, its preparation, and evaluation of the deposits. Muscovite mica occurs in a number of widely separated localities in Brazil, but production has come largely from deposits in the southeastern and eastern part of the State of Minas Gerais (Fig. I). There the deposits form a discontinuous zone, which starts at a point go km. north of the city of Rio de Janeiro and extends north for some 500 km., roughly parallel to the coast. A maximum width of 180 km. is reached along the Rio Doce. To the west in Minas Gerais, and extending east into the states of Espirito Santo and Rio de Janeiro, the mica zone proper is fringed by areas in which there are scattered occurrences of mica-bearing pegmatites. A few of these outlying deposits have produced commercial mica, but most of them are unimportant. To the southwest, in the State of Sao Paulo, there are a number of mines, which at one time produced a very considerable amount of sheet mica, largely as a byproduct of kaolin mining. These deposits, and a few others lying between them and the main productive areas to the northeast, appear to be the southwestern continuation of the strong Minas Gerais mica zone. In the vicinity of Conquista, just north of the Minas Gerais boundary in the State of Bahia, and still farther north, near Jacobina, there are several known mica deposits. Their location indicates that they may be the northern continuation of the main mica zone. The major part of Brazilian mica production has come from four areas within the mica zone proper; from north to south, Governador Valadares, Raul Soares, Espera Feliz, and Muriaé.. The first is go km. from north to south and reaches a maximum width of 180 km. The Raul Soares area extends 135 km. from northeast to southwest, and in places is 80 km. wide. The Espera Feliz area is 100 km. from north to south, and reaches a width of 35 km. The Muriai. area extends 150 km. from northeast to southwest and its width reaches 40 kilometers. Between the known productive areas, and in the areas directly to the southwest and to the north of them, little mica has been produced. These gaps, as well as certain irregularities in the outline of the mica zone itself, are to be ascribed either to lack of prospecting or to conditions preventing the discovery of mica, rather than to its nonexistence. Elsewhere in Brazil mica has been reported from eastern Goiaz, Ceará, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Sul, Matto Grosso, and Amazonas. Production from these sources is negligible at present. Because of the inferior quality of the mica from the more accessible of these localities, and the operational difficulties occasioned by the remoteness of others, it is improbable that they will become important producers for some time to come.

INTRODUCTION SINCE the first determination of Dumas1 in 1880, many authors have tried to measure the solubility of hydrogen in solid aluminum, or at least the amount of dissolved gas in it. However, the interpretation of the results which have been obtained is still difficult. Sieverts,2 then Baukloh and Oesterlen,3 during their gassing experiments could not determine any solubility of hydrogen in solid aluminum. On the other hand, Portevin, Chaudron and Moreau,4 leaving the determination of the hydrogen solubility beyond the scope of their experiments, measured only the amount of gas that they could extract by high voltage positive ion bombardment and found up to 151 cm3 of gas per 100 g of metal. Winterhager,5 by repeated vacuum extraction during severe cold rolling, extracted up to 161 cm3 per 100 g. In both series of experiments, the extracted gas contained chiefly hydrogen with a small amount of nitrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and methan. Later, Schmidt and von Schweinitz6 as well as Chaudron and Moreau7 showed the importance of the adsorbed layer of hydrogen, the extracted quantities being proportional to the surface and not to the weight of the sample, when its cleaning was not perfect. In earlier experiments, Steinhauser8 extracted from more massive samples nothing but a little amount (< 0. 5 cm3 per 100 g) of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and methane. Thus, according to these experiments the quantity of dissolved gas is probably very small and the effect of the surface could falsify the results of the extraction. However, owing to the care taken by Chaudron and his coworkers, it was clear that all the hydrogen extracted could not come from the superficial layer, or that the links which bound hydrogen to the surface were so strong that the usual method of cleaning could not destroy them. After the main parts of the experiments reported here had already been carried out, Eborall and Ransley9 published the results which they obtained with an analysor having an accuracy of 0.03 cm3 per 100 g, while that of the usual apparatus was only about 0.2 cm3 per 100 g. During all their experiments the adsorbed layer would have been a difficulty, for the value of the adsorbed hydrogen was approximately equal to that of the dissolved amount. The results of tests on oxidized lead ores from two properties are reported in this paper. The investigation was on a small laboratory scale only; no pilot-plant tests were made. One sample, from the Magajupa Mining Co., near Duenweg, No., contained coarsely crystalline and disseminated galena and cerussite, so both tabling and flotation were considered in the beneficiation. By this treatment of an ore containing 11.5 percent lead, a recovery of 79.5 percent of the lead was made in a concentrate containing 73.3 percent lead.

The magnetite deposits of the Big Ore Bank, in Lincoln County, N.C., were mined during the reconstruction period following the Civil War. The country rock at the Big Ore Bank property consists of micaceous schists and schistose quartzite with a few beds of dolomitic marble. Magnetite occurs with micaceous chlorite schist and is often so schistose that it is hard to distinguish from associated minerals. A magnetic survey by the North Carolina Geological Survey indicated several magnetic anomalies that appeared to justify exploration. The Bureau of Mines drilled 10 diamond-drill holes, totaling 4,493 linear feet, to delineate the deposits. More than 500 sludge samples and 119 core samples were collected for analysis. The project was begun in November 1943 and completed in April 1944.

Sponge iron is a product resulting from the reduction of an iron oxide below the temperature at which the product melts. Commercial grades usually contain 80 to 95 percent metallic iron, 2 to 5 percent unreduced iron oxide, and an amount of siliceous gangue material depending on the pur.ity of the are used for reduction. The reducing agent may be gaseous or solid, and a large variety of procedures have been proposed for bringing the reducing agent into reaction with the iron oxide. Of the proposed procedures, the one that has the distinction of having been in continuous commercial operation for the longest time, from 1911 to date, was developed at a ceramic plant in Hoeganaes, Sweden, and yields? a product that has an enviable reputation as furnace feed wherever special, high-quality steels are made.

The Capital Mine is one of, the more important zinc mines in Lawrence County, Mo. Owing to the urgent need for additional zinc during the war and the available facilities for the treatment of zinc-lead ores at the property, the Bureau of Mines examined the mine during July and August 1942 and selected it for further investigation by churn drilling, which was accomplished in the fall of 1943 and spring of 1944. At the conclusion of the drilling on the Capital holdings, the Greenland property, immediately south, was investigated by drilling two additional holes. Results of the investigation are presented in this report.

DEFORMATION lines, also called etch markings or strain markings, are noneffaceable lines developed in individual grains by etching a metal specimen which has been cold worked sufficiently to cause atomic non-conformity or slight orientation differences within the grains. Etching occurs more rapidly at these lines of high chemical reactivity to produce a result similar to that revealing grain boundaries.1 Wider etching effects forming bands have been found. They are believed to be bands of deformation lines which form areas of measurably different orientation from the crystal matrix. The crystallite rotations causing these bands have been shown by Barrette to contribute to deformation textures. Although deformation lines have been observed in many metals, the amount of deformation required for their appearance has been established only in general terms. Mathewson and Phillips3 observed the first appearance of deformation lines in cold-rolled alpha brass at about 20 pct reduction in thickness using the standard ammonium hydroxide hydrogen peroxide etchant. Price and Davidson4 noted deformation lines in common high brass after 26.5 pct reduction by cold rolling using the same etchant. Johnson&apos; observed dark thick forklike lines in 99.99 pct pure copper reduced 31.8 pct. Adcock6 observed deformation lines in 80-20 copper-nickel alloy rolled 50 pct. Samans7 found no deformation lines in alpha brass single crystals cold rolled 9.5 pct but they did appear after 25 pct reduction using ammonium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide etchant. Barrett and Levenson8 observed deformation bands in drawn polycrystalline iron at very small reductions in area and noted that their initial appearance perhaps depends on grain size and other conditions. They reported deformation bands in a single crystal of iron reduced 6 pct by drawing. Brick9 noted that deformation lines in 70-30 brass apparently associated with {111} planes appeared after reductions of from 20-50 pct by cold rolling. Brick and Williamson10 noted that in single crystals of 70-30 alpha brass "as in polycrystalline brass, no deformation markings appeared until reductions exceeded 20 pct." Cook and Richards11 reported that in copper cold rolled less than about 50 pct few strain markings were apparent but for higher. reductions many strain markings appeared transverse to the rolled direction. INTRODUCTION A WIDE variety of metallurgical defects in steel have commonly been attributed to the presence of excessive amounts of hydrogen. These defects include flakes in rails and forgings, cracks in welds, and blisters in enameled ware. They have been related to hydrogen largely by circumstantial evidence because the proper sampling and analysis of steel for hydrogen has been known to be difficult and because no general agreement has existed with regard to the relative suitability and accuracy of available methods. The need for a direct approach to these problems has been widely recognized. This general situation has been well described in the publications of the British Committee on the Heterogeneity of Steel Ingots,1 and current approaches to the problem were reviewed in a recent symposium of the AIME.12 The plans described by the present authors at that meeting have now matured satisfactorily and will form the basis of this paper. The principle object of this paper will be to describe the methods of sampling and analysis which have been developed and to illustrate the usefulness and limitations of these methods by citing their application to a specific problem. The first problem selected for investigation was the behavior of hydrogen in rail steel. This was chosen because the occurrence of shatter cracks in rails has received a great deal of study over a long period of time. The defect can be controlled by the expensive procedure of slow cooling. However, it may be hoped that a better understanding of the factors influencing the hydrogen content of rails will lead to a more efficient control of this problem. Rails provide a good starting point for a more general study of hydrogen in steel because they provide a cross section large enough to develop cracks, yet small enough for convenient handling and sampling. Rails were also selected because they are made from plain carbon steel and it was felt that the initial work should not be complicated by the effects introduced by alloying elements. The considerations which determined the original planning of this study should be reviewed. The inherently complex nature of most hydrogen problems requires that a large amount of data must be collected for any particular case. This in turn means that any analytical procedure should be as rapid and simple as possible. The same objective of speed is indicated by the fact that it may finally become desirable to use hydrogen analysis in process control. It is also known that hydrogen is highly fugitive and that any procedure which facilitates early analysis of the sample without prolonged or irregular storage has distinct advantages. The most important previously reported methods of analysis may be classified into three general groups: (I) Vacuum fusion. (2) Vacuum extraction (without melting). (3) Total combustion.

The Skene mine, in the Elizabeth District, Illinois, produced lead are from 1901 to 1907. Three exploratory holes drilled just north of the mine were said to have penetrated 40 feet of good zinc are. During the summer of 1944, the Bureau of Mines drilled check holes close to what appeared to be two of the three old holes. They also drilled two holes to the south of the mine and one into the core of the deposit. Results of the investigation are given in this report.

The coal stripping project of the Edna Coal Company in Routt County, Colorado, near Oak Creek, is not greatly different than many other such projects in the United States-with two rather significant exceptions. The project is at an altitude of approximately 8,000 feet, and the topography is that characteristic of mountainous terrain. The first exception-that of high altitude-makes year round operation a challenge. The second exception-that of rugged topography makes the haulage of materials a difficult task.

Recovery of gold by smelting zinc dust concentrate has been carried on at Lake View and Star, Ltd., since July, 1930, when the Merrill-Crowe precipitation plant was first put into operation.Part I describes the development of current gold-room practice, commencing with the clean-up of the MerrillCrowe plant, a procedure that has not materially changed since its inception, and then shows how modifications to straight roasting and smelting became necessary, following a gradual increase in the copper content of the ore treated by the mill.Present smelting practice converts most of the copper into a mixed copper-lead matte, thE sulphur being supplied by the addition of flotation concentrates containing about 35% sulphur as pyrite. The process yields gold bullion of a sufficiently high grade to send to the Royal Mint, but until 1943, suffered from the disadvantage of giving matte and slag by-products high in gold and silver, that were not recovered directly but had to be sent to a smelter.Part Il gives details, of experimental work cnrried out since 1943 which led .to a process for the satisfactory and economic recovery of not only the gold and silver, but also the copper from these, hitherto, troublesome by-products. Nevertheless, incidence of matte in a smelt has always been considered undesirable, and it is hoped that eventually it will be obviated by removing most of the copper from the zinc slime before smelting.Part III indicates the methods by which this might be achieved, and outlines the experimental work that has been done up to the present.

Lithium in the form of metal, salts, and alloys is particularly important because of increasing industrial uses resulting partly from wartime developments. Lithium carbonate and lithium strontium nitrate, which impart a brilliant red color to a flame, are used in pyrotechnics. Lithium chloride and fluoride are used in fluxes for welding aluminum to dissolve the oxide coating on the aluminum and prevent oxidation of the molten metal. Lithium carbonate is used in ceramics in raw alkaline glazes because of its unusual fluxing properties. The use of 9 to 12 percent lithium carbonate permits a marked increase in the amounts of alumina, calcium, and silica that may be Used and results in a more stable glaze with sufficient alkalinity to produce vivid copper blues and other typically alkaline colors. Lithium stearate is used as a grease in airplane engines because of its ability to withstand wide changes in temperature. In view of its great affinity for nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur, phosphorus, carbon, and silicon, lithium has an excellent scavenging action on molten metals. It forms stable nonmetallic compounds of low specific gravity or gases that are eliminated at pouring temperatures. Lithium is generally added to the melt in the form of a lithium-calcium alloy consisting of 50 percent of each ingredient or as an alloy of 98 percent copper and 2 percent lithium. The lithium-calcium alloy added to cast iron before pouring, acts as a scavenger and increases the fluidity of the melt. This alloy also is said to increase the corrosion-resistant properties of stainless steel alloys and to improve their polishing qualities.

PREVIOUS investigations have shown that lithium is body-centered cubic from near its melting point to the temperature of liquid air1,2,3 Nevertheless there was an incentive to search again for a transformation at low temperatures: C. Zener4,5 has remarked that the low value of the elastic modulus (11 - C12)/2 of body-centered cubic metals and alloys implies a rapid increase in free energy with decreasing temperature, which would favor the occurrence of a transformation; also the shear movement to which this modulus applies is one that can transform a body-centered cubic structure into a slightly distorted face-centered cubic structure. It was confirmed that lithium does not transform spontaneously at liquid nitrogen temperature, but it was found that a transformation can be induced at this temperature by cold working the metal,6 and at slightly lower temperatures a different transformation occurs spontaneously. Transformations were also found in solid solutions of magnesium in lithium. THE NATURE OF THE TRANSFORMATIONS Before presenting a detailed treatment of the technique used and the specific data obtained, it would be well to give a brief survey of the general characteristics of the transformations. A new crystal structure begins to form spontaneously in a specimen when it is cooled below a critical temperature. In lithium the structure appears to be close-packed hexagonal; in the Li-Mg alloys most of the diffraction lines (but not all) are near those for hexagonal lithium. The transformation proceeds as the temperature is lowered and soon stops if the temperature is held constant or raised. The course of the transformation on cooling is indicated by the curve at the lower left of Fig I. This curve is drawn in stepped fashion because the transformation goes by discrete steps with audible clicks. Because of the similarity to the decomposition of austenite into martensite in steels, it seems appropriate to designate the beginning of the spontaneous transformation on cooling as the Ms point. On heating to room temperature after the low temperature treatment only the usual BCC structure is found. On heating, the low temperature modification begins to disappear at a temperature which will be designated as Ac. The transformation on heating is halted when the rise in temperature is halted. The temperature must be raised 40 to 50°C above Ac before the reversion is complete-an interval which is sensitive to the rate of heating and to the time of holding at temperatures above Ac. This behavior on heating thus has similarities also to the formation of martensite in the cooling of steels.

During the spring and summer of 1946, the Bureau of Mines put down 8 churn-drill holes and 9 diamond-drill holes, totaling 3,535 feet of bore, at the Blewett zinc-lead deposit in Jo Daviess County, Ill. Attention of the Bureau of Mines was first directed to this deposit by the Illinois State Geological Survey, which had investigated the Blewett mine. In the opinion of the Survey and the Bureau of Mines, the record of production and results of drilling previously done on the property were considered sufficient justification for continuing investigation to the north and south along a projection of the trend. This report describes the work done by the Bureau on this, property and presents the data obtained.

The Simon & Coles manganese deposit in Sherman Valley, Bedford County, Pa., was investigated by the Bureau of Mines during the fall of 1942. Two churn-drill holes; 65 and 75 feet deep were bored, and 8 channel samples were taken. Manganese occurs at this property in the form of psilomelane and manganiferous iron as replacement of the red sandy shale of the Much Chunk-formation. Two cars of manganese ore had been shipped by the owners in 1940, of which one averaged 10.9 percent manganese and the other 21.3 percent manganese. One car of hand-sorted manganese ore that averaged-45 percent manganese was shipped in 1942.

The ignition problem: for a layer of firedamp bordering on a cloud of detonation products is evidently considerably more complicated than in the usual laboratory ignition experiments, in which a well-defined volume of gas is heated and the occurrence of ignition is observed after an induction period. An atmosphere of firedamp exposed to the detonation of a high explosive is subjected to heating by shock-wave compression and thermal conduction and to intermixing at the interface of the firedamp atmosphere and the cloud of deto¬nation products. Although a reliable physical-chemical analysis of the problem is not yet possible, one may nevertheless form a general view of the role of compression waves and the processes of heat transfer and diffusion at the interface. Near the mouth of a shot hole, or near a freely suspended cartridge, the firedamp atmosphere attains very high temperatures by adiabatic compression, and it is certain that such temperatures are sufficient to initiate chemical reaction. The pressure wave pattern is reproducible from one test charge to another if the initial experimental conditions are held constant; on the other hand, experiments on firedamp ignition do not yield a reproducible threshold condition for ignition, but only an ignition probability. Thus, the induction periods are sufficiently long that there is time for the compressed&apos;, heated gas layers to undergo random changes that may quench or promote ignition. Therefore, the analysis of the ignition problem hinges primarily on the discovery of the random events that modify the chemical reaction in the activated gas layers.
