C. H. Samans and W. R. Ham (Chicago, Ill., and Dix-field, Maine, respectively)-—For several years we have been studying transitions of this basic type in metals, alloys, glasses, etc. Usually, however, they are not so clearly marked as those which the authors have found, and hence are much more difficult to determine accurately. Since our studies indicate that most of them occur virtually unchanged (as far as temperature is concerned) regardless of the form in which the element appears, we believe that they are a characteristic of the atom. Specifically, we believe that there is an additional rotational degree of freedom possessed by the nucleus which has not been considered heretofore. This nuclear rotation is made up of several components, each related to the several quantum shells of electrons. In chromium there are four of these shells and hence four separate series of characteristic transition temperatures. The lowest temperature at which any transition occurs, based on the present state of our computations, is 125°K, 4° higher than the authors' value of 121°K. A convergence of this series, we believe, shows up at the higher temperature of 2085 °K, surprisingly close to the transformation temperature of 2103°K recently announced by N. J. Grant of M.I.T. for a body-centered to face-centered transformation in chromium. Likewise, our computations indicate a temperature of 311°K for the second transition temperature, reported by the authors as 310 °K. A convergence of this series, we believe, shows up at a higher temperature as the melting point at 2163°K. Although our work on these series must, in a sense, still be regarded as empirical, since we do not understand fully as yet just what the series mean, it is based on a reasonably firm picture. The individual constants, from which the various series are computed for each element, comes directly from the X-ray K absorption limit. Furthermore, the same basic method has accounted for transformation and melting temperatures in about 50 of the chemical elements, which is all we have tried thus far. In many cases the only known transformation is the melting point, but in others the occurrence of transformations or other transitions, equally as well marked as those of the authors, has been pointed out by others. These observations have assisted us greatly. Consequently we were very pleased to see the authors' excellent work in finding these two transitions in chromium. With these confirming data, our picture of this element is clarified considerably, so we expect that at least some of our work can be published in the near future. R. C. Ruder (E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Cu., Wilmington, Del.)—The authors' interpretation of these transitions in terms of 3d to 4s electronic structure transitions is most interesting. It would be interesting to have additional experimental evidence of such transitions from the temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient in the neighborhood of the property changes discussed in this paper. Simple theory15 suggests the Hall coefficient as a measure of the free electron (or s electron) concentration per unit volume. It has been shown that for paramagnetic'" and ferromagnetic1? metals the simple theory is in fact too simple. However, the existence of a discontinuity in the Hall coefficient would provide information which should aid both in our understanding of these transitions and the significance of the Hall coefficient in these metals. It was rather surprising that no significant paramagnetic effects were observed. In this connection the recent work of McGuire and Kriessman18 is cited. They measured the magnetic susceptibility of chromium from 20" to 1460 °C. They also observed no large change in the susceptibility although there might be a change in slope in the vicinity of the 40 °C transition. The existence of these 3d to 4s electronic transitions has been discussed in connection with the paramagnetic susceptibility behavior of nickel and nickel alloys.'"-" Assuming a correspondence principle between classical and quantum mechanical paramagnetic theory and using classical theory to calculate the effective Bohr magneton number from the Curie constant for substances obeying the Curie-Weiss law," it is found that the effective magneton number is a function of temperature. The process of calculation involves the inverse of the differential of the 1/x4 vs. temperature curve so that good and numerous data are necessary to obtain significant results. The data of Fallot23 show a discontinuous increase of about 12 pct in the effective magneton number between 850" and 900 oC, followed by a continuous increase up to the melting point. The data of Sucksmith and Pearce24 show a possible 8 pct increase. The older data of Terry25 and Weiss and Foex26 show a continuous increase. It is possible that small amounts of impurity atoms change these electronic transitions significantly. Fallot's23 data on a nickel alloy with 4.5 atomic pct Fe indicate that the discontinuity occurs around 1300 °C. Systematic investigation of the transition metals for transitions of this nature should provide information which would be very valuable for our understanding of these metals. The absence of antiferromagnetic structures in chromium has been shown by Shull27 using neutron diffraction techniques. M. E. Fine, E. S. Greiner, and W. C. Ellis (authors' reply)—The remarks by Drs. Samans and Ham are certainly very interesting, in particular those pertaining to the close agreement between the theoretically calculated values for transition temperatures in chromium and the experimental values reported by a number of investigators. This is a remarkable achievement and we shall look forward to a more detailed presentation of the method followed in their calculations. We do not believe that the transition in pure chromium near 40 °C remains temperature invariant with alloying, as was reported by Samans and Ham for a number of the substances that they studied. We have not done any work with alloys but base our belief on the results of earlier studies in which less pure chromium was included and considerably lower transition temperatures were observed. An important phase in the Bureau of Mines investigation of electrical machines designed for operation in gassy coal mines is testing enclosures of electrical components for explosion-proof qualities. In brief, this testing consists of filling and surrounding the enclosure with an explosive atmosphere of methane and air and then igniting the atmosphere within the enclosure to determine (1) Whether the resulting explosion is confined without discharge of flame; (2) whether the enclosure walls are permanently distorted; and (3) whether excessive pressures are developed within the enclosure. Ordinarily, the pressures encountered in routine testing do not exceed 100 pounds per square inch gage. Hence, the designer of the machine does not have too much difficulty in taking corrective measures to prevent flame discharge and distortion of the enclosure. Occasionally, however, the explosion pressures greatly exceed 100 pounds. Then the goblet of the designer may not be solved so readily, From experience over the year 0, the testing personnel often can predict that certain construction will result in high. Pressures, but, only in a very general way, has it been possible to advise designers what modifications might be made to reduce the explosion pressures to normal values. For example, if high pressures were developed in a motor starter having a partition with an opening through it, some enlargement of the opening may appear to be the logical procedure, but it has not been- possible to give information concerning the exact amount the opening should be enlarged to prevent development of high pressures .

Early in the nineteenth century, coal from Clearfield County entered the eastern commercial market. Ashley reports that coal was moved down the Susquehanna River by ark from Clearfield to Columbia, a distance of 260 miles, as early as 18o4. Around 1850, the famous Moshannon or Lower Freeport bed was discovered. Several years later the Moshannon Basin was developed extensively, and the coal from this area soon acquired an enviable reputation as a high-quality industrial fuel. Today much of the original Moshannon Basin coal is worked out, and the Lower Kittanning bed has replaced the Lower Freeport bed as the principal source of production in southeast Clearfield County. With depletion of the thick underground deposits, the importance 'of Clearfield County as a coal Producer would have diminished rapidly, if it had not been for strip mining the thinner beds. About 60 percent of the coal produced in the county is strip-mined, and the trend toward this mining method is expected to continue as the older underground operations are exhausted. Many strip mines are working in beds that are too thin to be recovered economically by any other method.

The first national survey covering sales of fuel oil by States and principal uses was made in 1926 by E. B. Swanson of the Bureau of Mines (then under the U. S. Department of Commerce) under a cooperative agreement with the American Petroleum Institute. This annual study, covering the market for fuel oil, was made through 1930 with the financial help of the institute bat has since been continued by the Bureau up to the present time. The scope and coverage of the survey have gradually changed over the years as new uses for fuel oil have been found and new products have come into importance resulting in market expansion. Range oil (No. 1 fuel oil or kerosine) came into use for cooking and space-heating daring the depression era in New England, and it was first reported as a total in the 1931 survey. In 1934 the sales were compiled on a State basis. State totals for distillate fuel oil, Diesel fuel, and residual fuel-oil sales were first shown for 1934 and by principal uses and States in 1937. Kerosine deliveries by States and main uses were also released for the first time in 1937.

The increasing demands for petroleum and its products and the steadily increasing cost of discovering and developing new oil fields are factors that emphasize the importance of increasing the recovery of oil from known petroleum reserves. Water flooding is a valuable conservation measure, not only preventing premature abandonment of stripper leases but also reviving interest in many areas previously abandoned. The use of water flooding as a means for recovering additional oil from partly depleted oil-bearing formations was first tried in Oklahoma in 1931. Early water-flooding operations were confined to the area of shallow Bartlesville-sand formations in Nowata and Rogers Counties, where many of the projects were outstandingly successful. The results of these operations stimulated activities in other pools in Oklahoma, and by the end of 1949 water flooding had been tried in 25 of the 49 oil-producing counties in the State (fig. 1). Approximately 33 million barrels of oil, or 1,806 barrels per acre, had been recovered by December 31, 1949, from 18,221 productive acres included in the 162 active and abandoned projects in Oklahoma by injection of approximately 449 million barrels of water.

UPON the death of its founder, Phelps, Dodge & Co. entered upon a new chapter in its long and varied history. Thereafter, for nearly a decade, William E. Dodge largely determined and executed the policies of the company. The old firm, dissolved automatically by Phelps's death, was succeeded by a new partnership consisting of Anson G. Phelps, Jr., William E. Dodge, Daniel James, James Stokes, William E. Dodge, Jr., and D. Willis James, one of the three sons of Daniel James. Each of the first three partners owned a twenty-five-per-cent interest in the company, Stokes had a fifteen-per-cent interest, and the two younger partners each held five per cent. The new company bought Anson Phelps's holdings in the old firm from Olivia Phelps, his widow and executrix, for approximately seven hundred thousand dollars; but the new partnership, designed by agreement to last the usual five-year period, was brought to an end shortly before that time by the death of the younger Anson Phelps from small- pox. To prove to .the satisfaction of all concerned that electrolytic manganese from our low-grade domestic ores could be substituted satisfactorily for ferro-manganese made from high-grade foreign fires, an extensive series of tests was conducted in cooperation with industry, in which electrolytic manganese pro-duced by, the Bureau of Mines at its Boulder City, Nev., Station was substituted for the ordinary ferro grades in the production of ferrous and nonferrous metals and alloys and welding-rod coatings. Over 1,200,000 pounds of manganese was given out for this purpose. The objectives of the tests were accomplished, and for some purposes electrolytic manganese was shown to be superior to other grades because of its high purity. The only serious objection that can be raised against electrolytic manganese is its price, which puts it out of reach for most purposes. Even if the price were to be lowered to a point where it would be in line with ferro grades, it is questionable whether electrolytic manganese from domestic ores could supply more than a small part of the needs of American industry because of the large volume of domestic ore that would have to be processed to supply a satisfactory feed for the electrolytic process. Thus, although electrolytic manganese is highly desirable from a metallurgical standpoint, it could not be expected to substitute for more than a fraction of our domestic manganese requirements.

THE BARRIER-PILLAR SYSTEM in the Lackawanna Basin consists of 93 barrier pillars between Archbald and Taylor, Pa. These pillars affect 48 mines, have a total length of 87 miles, and confine 21 underground pools, which contain more than 10 billion gallons of water. From an investigation of size, position, and condition of the barrier pillars, it is apparent that those concerned are uncertain, not only as to the method by which the sizes of the barrier pillars were determined but also as to the stability of those that may be expected to act as dams. Where a barrier pillar must act as a dam, its failure may result in loss of life, the mine, or both; it would be far better had it not existed and thereby given a false sense of security.

[This investigation of the refractory properties of seven Pacific Northwest chrome ores and concentrates has shown that five of the ores and one of the concentrates are suitable for making refractories and that all may be used in combination with high-grade chromite. The specific objectives of the investigation were to determine the inherent physic al and chemical characteristics, to shapes using each of the chrome ores and concentrates, to compare the refractory qualities of the laboratory-prepared with commercial chrome refractories. As far as possible, standard tests were used as criteria.]

THE injury data and experience in this bulletin are presented in three general sections. The first section contains general and detailed data relating to 1948 injury experience in bituminous-coal and Pennsylvania anthracite mines, separately and combined into totals for all coal mines. The related employment, worktime, production, and productivity data are given in each breakdown of the statistical data. Tables 1 through 22 constitute a subsection and present statistics on number of injuries, frequency and severity rates, average severity, detailed and major causes of injuries, injury records of the coal-producing States, distribution of injuries by part of body, and distribution of injuries by days of disability. Tables 23 through 45, the second subsection, present injury experience in bituminous-coal mines by various selected factors of physical or operating conditions that ma contribute to the occurrence of injuries. The degree of mechanical loading, productivity, size of mine by number of men working and by tonnage mined, thickness of bed, length of shift, number of shifts, type of cap lamps, rating of mine as gassy or nongassy, type of ventilation, and combinations of these factors influencing mine safety are presented in this group of tables. Similar data on Pennsylvania anthracite mines are listed in tables 46 through 63, which comprise the third subsection. The second section of the report contains the generalized annual injury records of bituminous-coal, Pennsylvania anthracite, and all coal mines from the earliest available data through 1948. Tables 64 through 97 list the number of fatal and nonfatal injuries, injury rates, and causes of injuries on an industry basis, the long-term injury records of each coal-producing State, and the related employment, worktime, and production data.

J. R. Lane (Metals Research Laboratory, Washington)—A new type of deformation called "kinking" has recently been described. Is there any relation between the "rumpling" described in this paper and "kinking?" D. C. Jillson (author's reply)—Both are manifestations of bending about [210] axis. The difference is one of degree. W. C. Ellis (Bell Telephone Laboratories, New York) —Some observations of deformation in zinc recorded in this paper may be applicable generally to flow in metals. One of these, deformation in torsion without evidence of slip or twinning in the early stages and with startling ease, when the twist is about the hexagonal axis, adds another method of flow to the presently increasing list of mechanisms. This illustrates again that a crystal will utilize any realizable process to flow and relieve stress. The process is not necessarily classical directional slip—& this case, it is rotational slip. The question naturally occurs: Will face-centered cubic metas stressed by twisting about an octahedral axis flow in a similar manner by rotation on an octahedral plane? I would like to ask Dr. Jillson if he has made any experiments or knows of any experiments of this type on face-centered cubic metals? Face-centered cubic metals possibly would behave differently from zinc, since, for one thing, the stacking sequence is different for the two structures. The results of such experiments, however, would be instructive in providing more information about deformation processes. D. C. Jillson—Dr. Roy E. Swift, working in the Hammond Laboratory at Yale, performed a twist test on a single crystal of brass. The work has not been published, and I do not know the crystallographic direction of the axis of the specimen used. Lo-ching Chang (Columbia University, New York)— Observations similar to Figs. 1 and 2 of the paper were obtained by us during the bending and unbending of an orthorhombic Au-Cd alloy.'l This orthorhombic alloy is the product of diffusionless transformation from a single crystal of p Au-Cd alloy (CsC1 structure) containing 47.5 atomic pct Cd on cooling to about 60 "C.62 Referring to the effects of annealing, has the author tried any loilg time high temperature anneal, such as 150 to 200 hr at 40O°C? Although secondary-recovery methods have not been applied widely in California, it is apparent that increasing attention and effort must be given to this phase of recovery if the State is to maintain its high rank as a petroleum producer. Steadily increasing demands for petroleum products and decreasing rates of discovery of new oil fields and rapid depletion of existing reserves emphasize the prospect of an adverse situation of supply and demand in the not-far-distant future. If the trend of discoveries becomes more favorable or if more complete economic recovery of the oil in place can be obtained by secondary recovery, this situation can be averted. Not only are these reserves of economic importance to the petroleum industry to meet increasing market demands, but economic reclamation of such reserves is an important conservation measure, which will prolong the productive life of many fields" Accordingly, progressive operators in California are alert to the possibilities of secondary recovery and have done much to implement such operations wherever feasible. Most of the operations are of the pressure-maintenance type} in which the reservoir pressure is maintained or partly maintained by injecting natural gas to increase oil recovery. The possibilities of recovering additional oil from stripper fields by gas drive and water flooding (including water disposal) also are being tested in experimental field projects. Table 1 summarizes gas and water-injection projects in California.

ALMOST all of the coal used for metallurgical purposes west of the Continental Divide is ruined from the Lower Sunnyside bed in Carbon County, Utah. Coke produced from Lower Sunnyside coal and used in western steel plants is weaker structurally than coke used elsewhere in this country. For this reason, western coal operators and steel manufacturers are anxious to develop new areas of coking coal of better quality than the coal produced from the Sunnyside bed. Early in the war, the Bureau of Mines undertook an intensive investigation of western coals to (a) develop additional reserves of coking coal to supplement proved reserves in the Sunnyside bed and (b) develop, if possible, reserves of coal with coking qualities superior to Lower Sunnyside coal. Results of investigations in the Kemmerer district, Wyoming,9 and in the Minnesota Creek area, Gunnison County, Colo.,10 have been published.

[The coarse-grained granitic pegmatities of the United States have long been a source of many important industrial minerals, because of this, they have been studied intensively by geologists, mining engineers, end metallurgists. These studies have amassed a rather astounding array of published and unpublished information. Correlation of geological studies between individual pegmatites, as well as between major districts, has brought fort come semblance of order to the knowledge of the structure and mineralogical composition of those highly complex and irregular deposits, making it possible to classify certain pegmatites and pegmatitic zones into several grouts of associated minerals, based upon the presence or absence of the minor minerals of beryllium and lithium. This classification or trouping of minerals, with the methods that have been developed for recovering certain of these minerals, possible a systematic approach to the winning of many of the industrially important minerals from pegmatite rock by u single integrated process.]

(1) The Castleman Basin was investigated by diamond drilling, engineering examination, and geologic study. Agreements permitting investigation of about 14,700 acres of land were entered into with 79 landowners. Eleven beds of coal between the horizons of the Harlem and Mercer beds were penetrated in drilling. These beds from top downward are: Harlem, Upper Bakerstown, Lower Bakerstown, Brush Creek, Upper Freeport Rider, Upper Freeport, Upper Kittanning, Middle Kittanning, Lower Kittanning, Mount Savage, and Mercer. Oil bearing rocks, usually found at depths of 2,000 to 10,000 it, are elastically deformed by overburden pressure. Although the change in porosity with pressure in a number of example rock.: has been shown to be small, it was thought that overburden pressure might have a significant effect on permeability. This note presents results of an investigation to determine the magnitude of the change in permeabilty with pressure. In routine core analysis permeabilities are measured on rock samples which are not under overburden pressure. If permeablity measured in this way differs from permeabilities measured under overburden pressure, a systematic error is introduced into well productivity calculations. The experiments described in this report were made to determine the magnitude of the change and thus to give an estimate of the error introduced into the calculations. The error introduced by the neglect of the change in permeability when overburden pressure is removed may account for part of the difference between well productivity calculated from core analysis and the actual well productivity. The results obtained in this investigation have only quali-tative significance because of the difficulty in reproducing in the laboratory the stress conditions on the rock buried in the earth. The assumption which is usually made is that the rocks in the earth are under a uniform pressure equal to the weight per unit area of the vertical overburden column from the rock in question to the surface of the earth less the pressure of the liquid in the pores of the rock. For an overburden consisting of sandstones and shales (of assumed average specific gravity of 2.3) and for a liquid pressure equal to the pressure in a salt water column (of specific gravity 1.0) reaching from the rock to the surface, the resulting net pressure on the rock is approximately 0.56 psi per ft of depth. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Clean, dry sandstone core plugs one in. in diameter and about three in. long were mounted in a copper foil jacket as shown in Fig. 3 or molded in a Lucite jacket as shown in Fig. 4. All cores except those labeled "2" in Fig. 1 and "8" in Fig. 2 were measured in the copper foil jacket. Cores "2" and "8" were measured in the Lucite jacket. The jacketed core was placed in a high pressure hydraulic bomb in which the liquid pressure outside the jacket could be raised to 15,000 psi. Flow lines from the core were brought out of the bomb through special fittings in the bomh head and connected to a laboratory type gas permeameter. Measurements were made with nitrogen gas; the maximum mean gas pressure in the core was 16.1 psia. RESULTS The specific permeability of sandstone decreases with in. crease in overburden pressure. Most of the decrease takes place over the range of zero to 3,000 psi overburden pressure. If the net pressure on the rock is assumed to be 0.56 psi per ft of depth as discussed above, 3,000 psi of overburden pressure is equivalent to about 5,000 ft of overburden. At 3,000 psi overburden pressure, the permeability of the eight sandstone core samples tested ranged from 59 to 89 per cent of the permeability without overburden pressure. Figs. 1 and 2 show the permeability reduction as a function of overburden pressure. The permeability of the eight cores without overburden pressure ranged from 4.35 md to 632 md; these permeabilities are listed in Figs. 1 and 2. REFERENCES 1. "IntroductionON THE LAST DAY of December, 1951, a half-century of steel production was completed in the open hearth department of Dominion Iron & Steel, Limited, in Sydney, Nova Scotia.During that period, almost every known variation of basic steel making practice was used in working out a steel making process which would overcome the difficult metallurgical problems imposed by the use of Cape Breton coal and Wabana ore.This paper is presented as a brief review of these steel making practices, setting forth the fundamental metallurgical factors involved in their success or failure.Establishing the IndustryThe story of steel production at Sydney is closely interwoven with that of coal. The steel industry owes its inception to a desire on the part of the Dominion Coal Company, which was incorporated in 1893, to improve its marketing position by increasing sales of slack coal and providing a year-round demand for its product. Accordingly, the Dominion Iron and Steel Company, Limited, was incorporated on March 30th, 1899, with Mr. H. M. Whitney -who was President of the Dominion Coal Company -as its first President. The new Company was given powers to manufacture and process iron and steel, and to mine all minerals, including coal.A strong inducement to the industry was the bounty offered by the Dominion Government for the production of both iron and steel."

Soon after the Rosebery concentrator commenced operations in 1936, an investigation was begun in an attempt to discover a substitute for cyanide in lead flotation. Cyanide is an excellent depressant for zinc and iron, but it also powerfully depresses the copper, silver and gold bearing minerals present in Rosebery ore, thus allowing them to pass through to the zinc concentrate or final residue where they are of little or no value.The investigation was not entirely successful, but it did indicate that sodium bisulphite or sodium sulphite could be used as a depressant for zinc without depressing the copper, silver and gold bearing minerals. The sulphites were, however, much inferior to cyanide as apyrite depressant.At about this time, I. W. Wark, using the captive bubble technique, had shown that, at the concentrations normally used, sodium aerofloat is not a promoter for pyrite or galena in alkaline solutions (see his book "Principles of Flotation", p. 188). Pike County in the easternmost portion of Kentucky is one of the major coal-producing areas in the eastern Kentucky coal field. The county contains numerous coal beds, many of which are too thin to support mining. The commercially important beds are usually 4 feet or more thick, but selective mining at some places calls for removal of a much thinner section of the bed. The variation in quality of the beds from place to place and the large number of coal beds make correlation uncertain. Samples were collected from 14 different coal beds, of which the Elkhorn group is by far the most important. In addition to the Upper Elkhorn No. 3, Upper Elkhorn No. 2, Upper Elkhorn No. 1, and Lower Elkhorn beds that comprise the Elkhorn group, the Winifrede, Williamson, and Bingham beds constitute the principal coal deposits in Pike County.
