THIS investigation is a part of the United States Bureau of Mines work in conserving the Nation's resources. The isothermal sections presented were developed as a guide to a comprehensive investigation of the properties and fabricating characteristics of copper-base alloys containing manganese and tin. These alloys are being investigated as possible replacements for the commercial bronzes containing substantial quantities of tin. Development of the isothermal sections has, therefore, been limited to the area between 0 to 20 pct Mn and 0 to 25 pct Sn. Since Heusler1 reported the ferromagnetic properties of the Cu-Mn-Sn alloys in 1903, the system has been the subject of several investigations. These studies were largely concerned with correlation of magnetic properties and crystal structure.2-6 Vero,' however, established the solidus surface of the system, between 20 pct Mn and 40 pct Sn, by thermal and microscopic methods. The a, ß, and y solid solutions were also observed by Vero and reported to extend into the interior of the ternary system. For the present study, the annotated diagram of the Cu-Sn system prepared by Raynor' and the Cu-Mn diagram by Dean and coworkers9 were used as the binary borders of the ternary system. Procedure The metals used in this investigation were electrolytic manganese, washed cathode copper, and three-star tin. The manganese, produced at the Boulder City pilot plant of the Bureau of Mines, had a purity of 99.9 pct; the copper contained less than 0.004 pct Bi and 0.001 pct S; the tin contained 0.070 pct Pb, 0.070 pct Sb, 0.050 pct Fe, and 0.065 pct Si. Heats of 1 lb were melted in alundum crucibles with a 3-kw induction furnace. The heats were chill-cast in iron or copper molds to form 6-in. ingots 3/4 in. in diameter. Molds were washed with graphite or zirconia, depending on the manganese content, and preheated to 150°C. The maximum impurity content of any alloy was 0.03 pct Fe, 0.02 pct Si, and 0.02 pct Al; in most cases, they contained less than half this quantity of any of these impurities. Composition of the alloys and their treatment prior to homogenizing are shown in Fig. 1. Designations adjacent to each composition refer to the heat numbers. With a few exceptions, ingots containing 20 pct Sn or less were hot-swaged. These ingots were swaged, after a 24-hr preheat at 650°C, to obtain a total reduction of 70 pct in cross section. Intermittent reheating was necessary, and reductions were limited to either 0.025 or 0.050 in. in diameter per pass. Selection of a 200-hr homogenizing treatment was based on extensive experiments which indicated that virtual equilibrium was reached after 150 hr. Structures were retained by quenching in water. Grain sizes in the specimens homogenized at 350" and 450°C were generally small. These homogenizing treatments were preceded by a 50-hr anneal at 650°C to facilitate phase identification by increasing the grain size in these specimens. The specimens were furnace-cooled from this temperature to the homogenizing temperature, and the heat treatment was continued for the standard 200-hr period. The homogenized samples were bisected to provide an internal section for metallographic examination. Optimum definition of the microstructure was obtained by successive polishing and etching. Quarter-strength ASTM copper reagent No. 13 gave the most satisfactory results.10 Filings from interior sections of the samples were used for diffraction studies. These filings were annealed in evacuated glass tubes at homogenizing temperatures for periods exceeding 50 hr and quenched in water. During this treatment the manganese content was reduced by significant amounts, probably by vaporization. This change in composition was considered in applying the diffraction data, which were used only as a means of identifying phases where the data were consistent with the metallographic evidence. Phase Identification The a solid solution is readily distinguished by the copper-colored, twinned, polyhedral grains, as shown in Fig. 2, and a face-centered cubic X-ray pattern. Tukon indentations, using a 25-g load, indicate a Knoop hardness of 155 for a quenched from 650°C. Using white light developed by a Wratten 78 A filter, the ß grains in etched specimens have a dark brown tint in contrast to the lighter copper-colored grains of the a phase. Knoop hardness values of 284 were obtained for the ß structure in specimens quenched from 650°C. The ß structure was also distinguished from the a phase by its body-centered cubic lattice. This report describes in detail methods of making corrosion tests and chemical analyses that have been used extensively and satisfactorily in a study of plants in which various surface, waters and brines are conditioned and used for water flooding, brine disposal, and reservoir-pressure maintenance in Kansas, Oklahoma, and North Texas. The tests and analyses described were designed and adapted for use in the field in determining the relative corrosive and plugging tendencies of waters from various sources conditioned by different methods. Although the described methods were developed and used in testing oil-field waters in the Midcontinent oil-producing area of the United States, these same methods should be equally applicable to testing oil-field or highly mineralized waters throughout the world. Many of the methods used have been discussed by the writer (1)2/ previously, and some of them have been used for similar work in other laboratories. Early in the development of the practice of the subsurface injection of brines for disposal and increasing the recovery of oil, it became evident that different methods of chemical treatment and conditioning equipment would have to be devised to sustain desired injection rates into water-input wells. These changes became necessary because the highly mineralized waters produced with petroleum from deep formations became chemically unstable when pumped to the surface, owing to loss of dissolved gases as pressure and temperature dropped to atmospheric and to the contact with atmospheric oxygen at the surface.

A new, experimental coke oven was installed at the Southern Experiment Station, Tuscaloosa, Ala., in 1948. This oven, designated as the Tuscaloosa oven, features a 17-inch carbonizing chamber, globar heating elements, and silica-brick heating walls designed to simulate as closely as possible carbonizing conditions in commercial, slat-type coke ovens. Zoned heat-input arrangements maintain uniform temperatures over approximately 95 percent of the total flue area. The reasons for constructing an oven of this size, the details of the design, and the operating characteristics of the oven were given in an earlier publication.2/ This report presents the results obtained from the first series of carbonizing tests on Alabama coals with the new oven. Factors leading to the development of standardized operating and testing procedures and the results of crosscheck determinations with a commercial oven producing foundry coke are included also.

"The name 'Canadian Shield' is used for a vast area; largely in northeastern; Canada; underlain by Precambrian rocks. The part in Canada has an area; of about 1; 790; 000 square miles. The Heavy Media Separation plant operated at Lidsdale siding, eight miles from Lithgow, by the N.S.W. Mining Co. is a product of the Western Machinery Company, of D.S.A.This mill, designed to use finely ground magnetite as the heavy medium, was prefabricated in America and shipped to Australia for erection.First operated early in December, 1951 it has worked on a two-shift basis since. Designed for an input rate of 330 tons per hour, this mill is capable of washing 4 in. x /u in. coal down to its inherent ash by removing all heavy material, including high-ash coal.The principle is quite simple. A stream of raw coal is fed into the separatory vessel which contains a liquid medium, the density of which is adjusted to produce the desired split between coal and refuse. In this bath the lightest coal floats, and all material heavier than the specific gravity of the medium sinks, and is removed separately. Such a system is,. ideally suited to Western coal, as there is no definite splitting point between coal and refuse. Inherent ash of the coal fed to the plant ranges from 8 to 25%, the corresponding density range being from 1.28 up to 1.8.Generally speaking, the higher the density the higher the ash content of the coal.The density in the separatory vessel (hereafter called the cone) can be quickly and easily adjusted throughout the above range to any desired value. "The Island Mountain mine is at the southeast end of Island mountain; across Jack of Clubs lake from the Cariboo Gold Quartz mine.; The orebodies consist of quartz veins and pyritic replacement deposits in limestone. To December 31; 1944; there has been mined 296; 273 tons of quartz-vein ore averaging about 0.34 oz. gold a ton; and 101; 002 tons of sulphide ore averaging about 0.83 oz. gold a ton; a total of 397; 275 tons averaging 0.46 oz. From this; 175; 985 fine oz. of gold and about 26; 450 fine oz. of silver were recovered; having a value of $6; 510; 521.More than 95 per cent of the production has come from a band 500 feet wide along the contact of the Rainbow and overlying Baker members and extending about 100 feet into the latter. Evidence that the Rainbow belongs stratigraphically above the Baker is presented later in this paper. Both members are most variable lithologically, and individual beds and whole series of beds pinch out in short distances. In part, at least, this is due to squeezing out incidentally to intense folding. No section can be claimed with assurance to be really representative. However, both memb.ers are composed predominantly of quartzitic rocks. Both contain argillaceous quartzite, argillite, limy quartzite, limy argillite, limestone (marble), and minor amounts of highly ankeritized rocks believed to be igneous sills possibly originally approaching diorite in composition."

According to the Bureau of Mines annual survey, as of January 1, 1954 there were 337 refineries with a total daily crude-oil throughput capacity of 8,006,897 barrels. The total daily capacity increased 368,236 barrels during the year while the total number of refineries declined 6. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude oil therefore increased during 1953 from 22,270 barrels to 23,759. With the exception of the Texas Inland, all refining districts reported gains in the installed capacity for the year, the largest being the Louisiana Gulf Coast with an increase of 20 percent. A total of 397,500 barrels of additional crude oil capacity was reported as under construction January 1, 1954. Accounting for 129,500 barrels of this total are facilities for 3 new refineries in North Dakota, 2 in Washington and I each in Ohio and Utah. Equipment being installed to replace existing units, totaled 180,750 barrels daily.

This report contains a summary of the various studies made to determine the structural design of the production mine area of the Oil-Shale mine, Rifle, Colo. Prior to this investigation, it had been determined from a study of the geology, the structure of the deposit, and mining costs that the deposit should be mined by open stoping. The problem remained to determine the maximum safe roof span, the optimum extraction ratio, and the size of the pillars. These factors were determined from a study of the geologic structure of the deposit, the physical properties of the oil shale, and the magnitude and distribution of the stress around proposed underground openings. The latter was determined from both theoretical calculations and model studies. Safe roof spans, pillar sizes, pillar contours, and optimum extraction ratios were calculated from elastic theory and the physical properties of the mine rock. Safe roof spans, pillar sizes; and time effects were determined by Wright and Bucky by testing mine models in a centrifuge. The models were made from rock specimens taken from the proposed mine roof and pillars. The results from both studies agreed.

Geological mapping in various parts of Australia is revealing a number of regional associations of mineralizations with particular persistent stratigraphic horizons. Such associations have been found in the Broken Hill district of New South Wales, in the Nairne district of South Australia, in the Mount Isa district of Queensland, and in the Cloncurry district of Queensland. The question has arisen as to whether such mineralizations are of sedimentary origin, syngenetic with the enclosing formation, or whether they are of epigenetic origin, and reflect the selective hydrothermal mineralization of favourable beds on a regional scale.The purpose of this investigation is to test the use of sulphur-selenium ratios as an objective method of distinguishing between suphide deposits or sedimentary or supergene origin, and sulphide deposits of hydrothermal origin, with particular application to the districts mentioned. At the same time much data has been accumulated as to the selenium content of Australian sulphide ores. The possible use of sulphur-selenium ratios for this purpose was first demonstrated by Goldschmidt and his coworkers (1933; 1935), and later by Carstens (1941). Goldschmidt and Strock (1935) found that pyrite of sedimentary origin had a sulphur : selenium ratio of the order of 200,000 or more, whereas pyrite of hydrothermal origin had a sulphur: selenium ratio of 10,000 to 20,000. Carstensfound that sedimentary pyrite deposits in Norway contained less than 1 g. Se per ton, whereas hydrothermal pyrite deposits contained 20 to 30 g. per ton.

[Testing explosives for safe use in coal miner ran boon an important factor in preventing mine explosions. In the United States, explosives that have been approved by the Bureau of Mines are called permissible explosives. A purvey of the history of coal mining since permissibility testing welt, instituted some 4 years ago shown that there is no record of a coal-mime explosion caused by permissible explosives when used in a manner prescribed by the Bureau. To maintain the appropriate standards of quality, the Bureau of Mines conducts a series of examinations and tenth on samples of explosives collected in the field. In what is considered the most crucial test, teat 1, the explosives An fired from a steel cannon into a gallery atmosphere containing a mixture of natural gas and air, In another important test, test 4, the explosives charge to fired into a mixture of natural gas, air, and coal diet. To satisfy the permissibility requirements, the explosive must undergo throe gallery teats without igniting gas or coal duet. Other tests also are required for permissibility, but they do not come within the scope of the present paper, which studies the factors affecting the incendivity of explosives when fired into methane, air, and/or coal-dust mixtures. "IntroductionEFFLORESCENCE is herein considered to be any deposit of salts on the surface of a masonry structure that is brought from within or through the structure by capillarity and deposited by evaporation. Usually, efflorescence is white although green, yellow, and brown efflorescence is sometimes observed.The common white efflorescence almost always consists of sulphates of the alkali and alkaline earth metals and calcium carbonate, although sodium chloride is frequently present in structures erected near the sea shore.The first and most obvious result of the presence of soluble salts in masonry is the unsightly accumulation of these salts on the surface. This is particularly noticeable early in its life and is frequently fugitive ( 1), as much of the salt is soluble and is gradually washed away by rain. This removal can usually be facilitated by scrubbing; the structure with dilute hydrochloric acid.A more serious effect is the continuous accumulation of soluble salts as a result of ingress of sulphur acids in rain water or water from the ground. This may eventually cause spalling and disintegration by crystallization of salts in the pores of brick and mortar. An example of this type of failure, resulting from the crystallization of calcium sulphate, is discussed by Hardesty (2). Butterworth (3) describes similar failure resulting from •crystallization of magnesium sulphate."

FINE IRON ORES, and concentrates such as those produced from taconite, must be converted to lump form by some process of agglomeration before they can be used effectively in the blast furnace or open hearth. At the present time, four major processes for agglomerating these materials are being used on a commercial scale: sintering, nodulizing, pelletizing and briquetting. IN 1945 U. S. Steel Corp. through its subsidiary the Oliver Iron Mining Div., drew up tentative plans for an agglomerating plant on the Mesabi Range which would include a nodulizing kiln and a sintering machine. The purpose of the plant was two- fold: during its initial operation it would provide data on agglomeration of high grade ore fines, and would help relieve the shortage of ore for open hearth charging. Subsequently, it would be available for agglomerating taconite concentrates. While operating on fines screened from direct ore, it was planned to develop techniques and personnel so that a workable plant would be ready to handle taconite concentrates when the time came.

This report of a petroleum-engineering study of the Flat Rock oil field, Osage County, Okla., describes the geology, reviews the production history, and estimates remaining oil reserves. The Flat Rock field in the southeastern corner of Osage County approximately 6 miles northwest of Tulsa. Okla., was discovered in November 1904. The field was one of the first of many Bartlesville-sand fields developed in eastern Osage County during the early part of the 20th century. Although substantial oil reserves remain in the pressure depleted sands in some parts of the field, their economic recovery by water flooding will require careful consideration of the many factors involved.

IN the last 15 years industrial use of ground water has more than doubled, and in 1951 amounted to 5 billion gallons per day. A similar sharp increase in the utilization of ground water for irrigation and public-water supply occurred in the same period. In many areas rapid increase in withdrawal from wells has taken place almost entirely unhampered by regulatory control and with little or no integration of effort. As might be expected, the chief interest in many regions has been maximum production rather than sustained perennial yield. As a result, widespread depletion of underground reservoirs and deterioration of the quality of the water stored in them has taken place in many areas, even though total pumpage in the United States is far below ultimate potential. Of even more concern is the fact that excessive withdrawal has drawn salt water into the reservoirs beneath many heavily populated centers along the Atlantic, Gulf, and Pacific coasts, causing costly abandonment of pumping plants.' Many hydrologists expect that consumption of water will rise rapidly in the near future, and some predict that industrial requirements will more than double in the next decade.2,3 Thus it appears likely that the draft on many already heavily pumped underground reservoirs will be greatly increased and the search for additional sources of usable ground water intensified in years to come. In view of this, industry as a whole will be forced more and more to recognize the potentialities and limitations of ground-water reservoirs and to utilize them more effectively to prevent costly water shortages and disruption of production. Through painful experience, some industries are already well aware of the need for effective water utilization, and have managed individually or through joint effort to check trends threatening to deplete underground reservoirs completely or to impair the quality of the water. Various remedial measures have been used to bring about successful management of local or regional ground-water resources. Of these, replen-ishment of aquifers by recharge wells or basins has played an important role in overcoming some ground water problems. Artificial recharge of underground reservoirs by water spreading has been practiced successfully in the United States for many years. In the West it has become an important method of salvaging flood run-off for irrigation of crops and maintenance of public water-supply reserves, and it is used to some extent in parts of the East. Artificial recharge by means of wells, on the other hand, is a relatively new development. Until recently it was employed in only a few areas, principally along the East coast. For the last few years, in the ever increasing search for additional water supplies, industry has had greater recourse to this method. Utilization of recharge wells to control the temperature and quality of underground water supplies is also being considered seriously. Operation of recharge wells, like water spreading, is governed largely by local conditions. It requires water relatively low in turbidity, whereas in some areas water spreading has been used successfully with water of high turbidity and silt content. However, water spreading must be employed in large areas and can be carried on effectively only where aquifers crop out at the surface. Recharge wells can be used in limited space. Recharge wells are similar to production wells except that the water flows in the opposite direction. Thus any water-bearing bed that will yield water to wells may be recharged by wells. Often, however, the water available for recharge is of a different character and temperature from that existing in the ground-water reservoir and if transmitted directly underground from a recharge well to a production well might require expensive or difficult treatment before it could be used. Fortunately the physical characteristics of reservoir beds, which control the movement and behavior of ground water, are generally not homogeneous. Moreover, the movement of ground water is very slow because of the frictional resistance of the reservoir beds. By taking full advantage of hydrologic and geologic conditions, it is therefore possible in many instances to bring about favorable changes of temperature and dilution as the water moves from the recharge wells underground to the production wells. Furthermore, if the natural quality or temperature of ground water is unfavorable for industrial purposes, recharge wells may be used to introduce water of more favorable quality or temperature into the ground-water reservoir. When water is discharged into a recharge well, the head in the well is increased. Because of this, a cone of elevation is produced on the water table or the artesian pressure surface in the area surrounding the well. The cone of elevation is similar to the cone of depression produced around a pumping well except that the apex of the cone is above the water table or artesian pressure surface. Thus if a recharge well and a production well tapping the same water-bearing bed are close together, as would be the case at many industrial plants, some of the water discharged from the recharge well would be drawn into the production well within a short time. Under such conditions it is apparent that water of unfavorable temperature and chemical characteristics should not be used for recharging. The more important ground-water reservoirs in the United States often consist of alternating layers of impermeable beds and porous material that will yield water readily to wells. Physical characteristics of individual beds in a ground-water reservoir may not persist over great distances, the impermeable layers grading into beds that will yield large quantities of water. During investigations of the occurrence of manganese in the western United States in the early 1940?s, examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected samples from seven claims and mines in southern Arizona. For convenience in reporting the results, the work on the properties is grouped in three districts. As the ores were too low grade to be acceptable to producers of ferromanganese, beneficiation studies were made to determine the amenability of the ores to concentration. The San Fernando group is about 10.5 miles south of Patagonia in the Harshaw mining district. G. T. Humphries and D. Alonso held an option on the property, which was owned by H. Bender. Two samples were taken; 1 was a picked sample and the other a representative sample of ore as exposed in the mine.

1. The investigation shows that nine coal beds have been mined in Harlan County, of which the Harlan and Upper Elkhorn No, 3 are the most important from the standpoint of present production. Of less importance are the Hindman, Flag, Haddix, Wax, Fire Clay, Armburgy, and Upper Elkhorn No. 2. The Harlan, Upper Elkhorn No. 3, and Upper Elkhorn No. 2 beds contain the largest remaining known reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 2,138 million short tons as of January I, 1932. Of this total, 1,956 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study, Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

This paper deals with the application of table flotation to two unusual mineral dressing problems. Both problems involved the removal of interfering minerals at sizes too coarse to normal froth flotation.The first problem was the removal of arsenical minerals from Broken Hill gravity concentrates without further size reduction. Table flotation without grinding of the original concentrates gave almost complete rejection of the arsenic from the concentrates. A typical test result was a reduction of arsenic in jig concentrate from 0.75% arsenic to 0.007% arsenic.The second problem was to develop a method to produce a high grade calcium carbonate concentrate from coastal dune sands containing about 10% silica and about 80% calcium carbonate. The sands were about 30 mesh British Standard Screen (B.S.S.), and for economic and other reasons it was stipulated that the separation be made without grinding. Again, table flotation gave excellent results. A concentrate was produced containing 99.62% acid soluble material, representing a recovery of 98.69% of the calcium carbonate in the feed with a rejection of 96.44% of the silica.The investigations' were carried out at the Kalgoorlie Metallurgical Laboratory, under the Department of Mines...

This paper is a revision of Information Circular 7380, by D. Harrington and J. H. East, Jr., published in 1946, entitled ?Safe Storage, Handling, and Use of Commercial Explosives in Metal Mines, Nonmetallic Mines, and Quarries.? Issued soon after the close of World War II, this earlier circular described the unprecedented increase in the production and use of commercial explosives during the war as a result of expanded industry and the tremendous demand f or metals and minerals. In the years following World War II, the production and use of commercial explosives in the United States have continued to rise. Hence, the Bureau of Mines presents these revised figures through 1952. In rewriting this Wormation circular, most of the text prepared by Harrington and East has been retained, with newer statistical information compiled by Seth T. Reese, Accident Analysis Branch, and V. E. Wrenn, of the same branch.
