The suitability of fluid petroleum coke as a blending agent for producing metallurgical coke has been investigated using the Tuscaloosa and sole-heated experimental ovens. From the results of tests with three representative blends, it has been fond that additions of fluid petroleum coke effect the following changes: (1) Increase in size, resistance to shatter, and apparent specific gravity of cokes produced; (2) little or no change in coke hardness and stability or in the amount of breeze formed; (3) increased charge density; (4) modification of expansion characteristics of blends charged; and (5) decreased ash and increased sulfur contents of blends charged and cokes produced. Substitution of a calcined sample of fluid coke of greatly reduced sulfur content resulted in a coke of inferior physical properties. This effect indicates that additions of the calcined product should probably be limited and that other methods for producing a low sulfur fluid coke should be considered.

Flotation tests are described on samples of two lowgrade nickeliferous ores of Oregon and Washington. The sample from the Congress mine, Ferry County, Wash., contained 1.2 percent Ni, occurring chiefly as millerite. The sample from the Shamrock mine, Jackson County, Oreg., contained 2.20 percent Ni and 0.78 percent Cu occurring chiefly as pentlandite, nickeliferous pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite. The millerite in the Congress ore was concentrated by flotatioin with aulfydric collectors in a series of locked tests to recover 73 percent of the nickel as a 7 percent bulk concentrate. By successively regrinding and floating the bulk concentrate, it was further concentrated to 12.4 percent Ni at a recovery of 59 percent and 21.8 percent Ni at a recovery of 50 percent. Attempts at selective concentration of the copper-nickel Shamrock ore were only partly successful because of the intimate association of pentlandite and chalcopyrite. The nickel concentrate, which contained 86 percent of the nickel, had an analysis of 4.42 percent Ni and 1.03 percent Cu. The copper concentrate had an analysis of 18.8 percent Cu and 1.96 percent Ni and contained 48.5 percent of the copper. A bulk sulfide concentrate contained 92 percent of the copper and 01 per¬cent of the nickel and had an analysis of 4.17 percent Ni and 1.63 percent Cu.

[The steady increase of aluminum production means a corresponding increase of carbon consumption in the alumina-reduction cells. Improved petroleum techniques constantly reduce the amount of byproduct petroleum-coke production. These, trends threaten the alumina-reduction works with possible shortages of carbon, which must be supplied from some other source. In anticipation of this shortages, an investigation into the possibility of using coal as an alternative source of carbon was begun at the Northwest Experiment Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines. The investigation lit has developed bench-scale methods that produce carbon of higher purity than is required by specifications for anode carbon. Additional work will b required to bring these processes to pilot-plant seals and to prove the suitability of the carbons, produced or aluminum-anode consumption.]

A picture of the ceramic industrial potential of the Pacific Northwest States is presented by reviewing the present ceramic industries, raw-material resources, and current market demands. A resume is given of the industrial plants manufacturing ceramic ware as well as available information on raw-material resources. No attempt was made to prospect for new deposits but rather to evaluate, insofar as possible, those already known. Since much of the industry is concentrated on the Pacific coast, most of the information available on resources concerns deposits in that area. Large, undeveloped districts in Montana and Idaho, however, offer promise of larger reserves of ceramic raw materials. Average annual production, some operating costs, and annual power consumption are given for each of the plants. Production and some cost figures are listed to show the limited nature of the present industry and to suggest fields open for new development.

An investigation was begun by the Bureau of Mines in 1948 to determine the preparation characteristics of American coals. Results of the investigation were planned to be reported on a county basis and from the data developed, to determine: (a) Which coals either as mined or after beneficiation by conventional preparation are chemically suitable under present standards for producing metallurgical coke; (b) Which coals require special and more intensive treatment in preparation than is now practiced; and (c) Which coals cannot be considered potential sources of metallurgical coke, regardless of preparation. This report is one in this county series that describes the preparation characteristics of the coals of Perry County, Ky.

IT IS WELL KNOWN that chrysotile asbestos from various occurrences exhibits varied physical properties and certain differences in chemical corn position, both of which conditions may have an important bearing on the industrial utilization of the fibre. The usefulness of a harsh fibre in the manufacture of asbestos cement products and of low-iron fibre for certain electrical uses are examples. It is also .possible to obtain a fibre with a texture too harsh and brittle to be of economic value. Much research into the structure of the mineral and to a lesser degree observations relating the water of combination to certain physical properties have ?been reported. This paper is an attempt to show that the pyrolysis of ?chrysotile takes place in three stages and that the conditions of pyrolysis are peculiar to the fibre and may afford some clue to the variations in physical properties of asbestos fibres which affect their utilization.

The United States depends mainly on foreign imports, principally India, for an adequate supply of sheet mica suitable for its many uses in the electrical and electronics industries. Sheet mica has, in fact, played an indispensable role in developing these industries,4/ and, in turn, the products of these industries (radio, radar, electric motors, and many others) have become indispensable to the military forces. Because or these conditions, sheet mica in its better qualities long has been classified as a strategic and critical material, and from this stems the wide-spread interest in substitute materials of which synthetic mica is one potential type. The United States Departments of the Navy and the Army entered into a cooperative agreement with the Bureau of Mines in 1947 to study ways and means of synthe-sizing and growing mica crystals. This is one of a series of reports5/ that describe the results of this program.

The electric smelting of five lowgrade Canadian manganese ores has been investigated at the Mines Branch, Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, Ottawa. Ferromanganese, silkomanganese, and spiegeleisen were produced 1by special smelting processes from these ores since the latter were too low grade to be treated by conventional smelting methods. In one case the results were considered to be sufficiently promising to justify the construction of a pilot plant, by the Company concerned, for the further development of the process.

Two processes for agglomerating fine sized ores with low temperature coke are described. One process (Orcarb) agglomerates ores with limited amounts of carbon; the other (ore-carbon pellets) pelletizes fine sized ores, using low temperature cokes as the binder. Data are presented on the products obtained when taconite, magnetite, and hematite concentrates and several titanium oxide ores were used. REDUCTION of finely divided oxide ores has long been a major metallurgical problem. Various methods of agglomerating, notably briquetting, sintering, nodulizing, and pelletizing, have been developed and are in industrial use. Carbon is the usual reducing agent for oxide ores and attempts have been made to agglomerate fine ores with coking coal in order to get the metallurgical advantages of intimate contact and increased particle sizes suitable for subsequent smelting or reduction.1-3 For the past three years, research has been in progress on two processes for combining fine sized ores with reactive carbon in the form of low temperature coke. By one process, designated Orcarb, the ore is coated with coke carbon in amounts limited to that required for reduction and the result is an appreciable but limited increase in product particle size over that of the original ore. The second process, called ore-carbon pellets, produces pellets of fine ore bound by low temperature coke. The first objective was to develop a process for combining an oxide ore with only enough carbon for its reduction, the amount being that derived from the simple reduction equations. The carbon (that amount theoretically required for the reduction of the oxides in an agglomerate with ore), calculated to CO, ranges from 10 pct for zinc calcines or phosphate ores to 21 pct for rutile and 26 pct for silica. The carbon required for reducing iron oxides falls between the extremes—10 and 26 pct. When the carbon in the agglomerate is low temperature coke, reduction by hydrogen may be expected to take place, thus modifying the calculated carbon require- ment. On the other hand, in practice, an excess of reducing agent over that required in theory is normally used. Screen sizes of three iron ores on which the greater part of the experimental work was performed are given in Table I. Most of the testing was done with Freeport (Renton Mine) coal, but Pittsburgh and Elkhorn bed coals were also used. The first objective was to agglomerate the ore with sufficient low temperature coke to provide carbon for reduction, i.e., in the range from 10 to 25 pct. This was accomplished by preheating the ore, mixing with pulverized coking coal, and completing the coal carbonization in a plain steel rotating retort. The pilot retort, as it is now constituted, is shown by diagram in Fig. 1 and photograph, Fig. 2. The successful development of a titanium prototype of the 81-mm. mortar base plate for the Army Ordnance Corps is outlined in this report. Information is presented dealing with forming, forging, and machining, welding and assembly techniques, and design changes relative to this prototype. INTRODUCTION The work of the Federal Bureau of Mines in making ductile titanium available2/ has resulted in the establishment of a new industry. Owing to its strategic importance and the combination of low density and high strength, titanium has received considerable attention as a structural metal. Titanium's favorable strength-to-weight ratio is of particular importance to the Army Ordnance for equipment that is transported by airplane or by foot soldiers.

This report gives the results of analyzing three groups of crude shale oils by the Bureau of Mines procedure:4/ (1) Oils produced by standard Fischer assay determinations on oil shales from Brazil (Paraiba Valley) and the United States (Colorado); (2) oils produced from Brazilian shale by different retorting methods; and (3) oils from high-temperature retorting of Colorado oil shale in the Entrained Solids retort. It is the second in a series presenting data obtained by analyzing crude shale oils from various sources. The series furnishes information on the general characteristics and compositions of a wide variety of shale oils. Use of a standard analytical method on all samples facilitates comparison of different oils. The 18 oil samples analyzed in this project comprised 3 from assays of Brazilian and Colorado oil shales in the Fischer retort, 9 obtained by processing Brazilian shale in various other units, and 6 from entrained solids retorting of Colorado shale at 1,000° to 1,500° F. The crude oils from Brazilian shale contained about half as much nitrogen as the Colorado oils. Properties of the Fischer assay oils from Colorado shales agreed with some data that relate grade of the oil shale with properties of the crude oil from the Fischer assay. Comparison of results from Fischer assays of oils from the foreign and domestic shales shows that the oil from Brazilian shale contains more low-boiling material and less residuum than either of the two from Colorado shale. This fact is reflected in lower specific gravity, viscosity, and carbon-residue values for the Brazilian oil. Retorting Brazilian shale in the Entrained Solids unit at 1,120° F. produced an oil whose boiling range was generally lower than the boiling ranges of oils obtained by processing in three other retorts at conventional temperatures. The quality of crude oils from high-temperature retorting of Colorado shale in the Entrained Solids process varies with retorting temperature. As the temperature is raised within the range 1,000° to 1,500° F., the amount of the naphtha fraction in the crude oil increases to about 35 percent and the aromaticity to 98 percent.

This report on the properties of burner-fuel oils produced during 1956 was issued under a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, at the request of the Oil-Heat Institute of America and the petroleum industry. This survey is the second for this type of fuel, the first being made in 1955. 2/ The surveys are conducted to provide information on the characteristics of burner-fuel oils now manufactured for sale. They are similar in pattern to the diesel-fuel surveys, conducted since 1950, 3/ and are not intended to conflict with but rather to supplement them. The importance of fuel oil has resulted in the need for more information by the petroleum industry, manufacturers of heating appliances, and consumers regarding the types and qualities of the fuels currently being marketed. Samples of burner-fuel oil typical of their manufacture during the early part of 1956 were analyzed by the refiners in accordance with instructions from the subcommittee on fuel surveys of the Automotive Research Committee of the American Petroleum Institute, Results of the analyses were transmitted to the Bureau of Mines where the data were studied and compiled as shown in the tables of this report.

This report on the properties of aviation gasolines and aviation jet fuels produced in the United States during 1955 was made under a co-operative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. Analytical data are presented for 116 samples of aviation gasoline and for 38 samples of aviation jet fuel. The analyses were made on samples typical of the manufacturers' 1955 production in their laboratories and the results submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. The products of 20 manufacturers of aviation gasolines and of 16 producers of aviation jet fuels are represented.

The presence of undetonated explosives in a rock face after firing constitutes a hazard which can result in a fatal or serious accident if undetected before drilling commences.Most accidents caused by drilling into explosives are the result of failure to examine the working face properly and lack of care in subsequent drilling operations; it is not always realized that explosive may be left in the butts of holes or may be driven into cracks or crevices in the rock.Obviously the best means of preventing accidents of this nature is to adopt methods of drilling, charging and firing which will reduce the hazard to a minimum.There are three ways in which undetonated explosives may be left in the rock face, namely:1. Misfires.2. Cut-off shots.3. Incomplete detonation or failure of the charge to propagate throughout.MisfiresNo attempt will be made in this paper to deal fully with the question of the prevention of misfires, as apart from the fact that most of the preventive methods are well known, it is believed that if the miner receives his explosives and means of initiation in good order, and proper care is taken in their use, the failure of a charge to fire will be a rare occurrence. The provision of central fuse capping stations on mines has gone a long way towards the elimination of misfires caused by the mishandling of safety fuse anddetonators.

This report is the result of a series of coal-cleaning tests using a dense-medium cone-type washer. Detailed results are given for 2 tests using a magnetite medium and 4 tests using a pulverized-refuse medium. Approximately 120 float-and-sink tests and over 500 separate chemical analyses were made in conjunction with these tests. In these tests higher recovery efficiencies and sharper separations were obtained when using a magnetite medium, especially on coal sizes below one-half inch. When sizes above 1 inch at low specific gravities of separation are cleaned, the pulverized refuse medium compared favorably with the magnetite medium.

The physical properties and related geological and petrographic data for 81 rock types obtained from operating mines or selected test sites are presented in this report. Most of these rock data were obtained to supplement structural studies in underground mines; however, the data may be equally applicable to other problems where the physical properties of rock are an important factor. Stress-strain curves are presented, where available, and free medium velocities from laboratory and field measurements are compared for several rock types. Rock-type, geographical, and geo-logical indexes are included for reference relative to physical property data in this and previously published Bureau of Mines physical property reports. INTRODUCTION This report presents the physical properties of 81 rock types from 16 different projects (sections 53-68). Three previous physical property reports2 3 4/ (herein after referred to as parts I, II, and III) presented data on 244 rock types from 52 project areas. (Part I included sections 1-25, part II sections 26-36, and part III sections 37-52).

A study was made of combustion-air temperatures and factors affecting air temperatures in the open-hearth regenerative systems. Air-temperature surveys in the regenerative system revealed marked thermal gradients in the air above the checkers. The design of the fantail-uptake region plays a prominent part in increasing the heat recovery of the regenerative system. THE efficiency of the open-hearth regenerative system is one of the most important factors affecting open-hearth performance. Until recently, this factor has not received the attention in the literature given to many other items affecting performance, such as the type of charge, speed of charging, and the mechanical equipment of the open hearth. J. S. Marsh' emphasized the importance of the flame temperature and its dependence upon the combustion-air temperature. By means of measured air temperatures in open-hearth furnaces, data were presented which showed a remarkable degree of correlation between production rate and combustion-air temperature. This correlation was extremely good in view of the numerous factors, other than air temperature, which affect open-hearth production rates. In Marsh's work, a 100°F increase in air temperature reduced the heat time by approximately 45 min. Realizing the importance of combustion-air temperature, it is desirable to know which factors control the regenerative efficiency of the open-hearth furnace. B. M. Larsen recently discussed this subject.' The present paper illustrates a few of the more important items that affect regenerative efficiency and combustion-air temperature. In the latter part of 1951, a study of open-hearth combustion-air temperatures was begun at the South Works of the United States Steel Corp. In the initial work at open-hearth shop X, which produces low carbon steel products, temperatures were measured in the uptake in a manner similar to that used by Marsh' and the results obtained were very similar to the Bethlehem data. When it was decided to expand the study of combustion-air temperatures, open-hearth shop Y was selected because of the greater variety of furnace-design features, types of steel produced, and firing rates used. With the use of aspirating thermocouples, continuous gas analyzers, thermocouple and optical pyrometers, a study was made of: 1—effect of combustion-air temperature on open-hearth production rate, 2—thermal gradients present in various zones of the regenerative system, 3—effect of furnace-design variations on air temperature and heat recovery, 4-—effect of furnace-operating variables on heat recovery, and 5—variation in heat recovery with furnace age during the normal furnace campaign. Data collected on individual heats at 15 min intervals included air-flow rate, firing rate, checker temperature, combustion-air temperature, and furnace pressure. These data were collected on approximately 230 heats of steel. In addition, information was obtained at random on air infiltration and combustion-gas compositions. The data gathered have shown the desirability of closer control of open-hearth firing practices, a need for reducing air infiltration in the uptake zones, and a need for further study of design of checkers and of uptake-fantail areas. Equipment Air is practically a nonradiating medium. Consequently, in the measurement of air temperatures, the principle of heat conduction must be used rather than heat radiation. "Several experiments have been carried out in efforts to evaluate qualitatively a variety of electrolytes for refining bismuth. Most extensive work was done with the basic tartrate, hydrochloric acid, and hydrofluosilicic acid electrolytes. Deposits that are smooth and adherent can be obtained from these three electrolytes if low cathode current densities are employed. All three electrolytes were effective in purifying crude bismuth considerably, with additional purification indicated in each instance by a reelectrolysis step.With the basic tartrate electrolyte best results were obtained when the electrolyte was at 40° C. and contained at least 100 grams of bismuth per liter. An apparent disadvantage was depletion of bismuth from this electrolyte, causing the deposits to become spongy and nonadherent.The hydrochloric acid electrolyte had the greatest tendency to yield rough, dendritic deposits. Best deposits were obtained at cathode-current densities below 2 amperes per square decimeter. A small amount of glycerin helped to produce a smoother deposit, and adding sulfuric acid or methyl sulfuric acid retarded the deposition of impurities. Very good results were obtained in electrowinning bismuth from a bismuth trichloride-hydrochloric acid electrolyte.Smooth and adherent deposits were obtained from a hydrofluosilicic acid electrolyte, with very good refining as regards lead and silver impurities; however, higher reagent costs and slow decomposition of the electrolyte have discouraged its use.INTRODUCTIONMethods of recovering bismuth from ores and byproducts were underdeveloped for many years because of the limited uses for bismuth, the pharmaceutical industry being the chief consumer. In the past decade or so additional uses for bismuth, particularly in the metallurgical field, have brought about increased demand for the metal with the result that bismuth is being recovered from byproducts that were once discarded. In addition to such uses as low-melting alloys, solders, bearings, die setting, etc., some interest has been indicated in bismuth as a possible coolant for nuclear reactors. The advent of ductile bismuth and bismuth-alloy thermocouple wire has contributed greatly to temperature measurement, particularly in the below-zero range."

Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7516, Bibliography of Investment and Operating Costs for Chemical and Petroleum Plants, was published in October 1949 to aid in estimating investment and operating costs of processes for manufacturing synthetic liquid fuels. Development of such processes by the Bureau of Mines was authorized by Public Law 290, 78th Congress. This bibliography included references to and abstracts of publications appearing from. 1930 to September 1948 on all processes in general use in the petroleum refining and chemical industries. Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7705, Supplemental Bibliography on Investment and Operating Costs for Chemical and Petroleum Plants, was prepared to cover the area from September 1948 through June 1952.

Primary, low-temperature tars are generally known to alter with time. The effect is believed to occur, in some instances, without the external influence of air, light, or heat. Since one of the processes occurring during extended storage is oxidation, the action of mild oxidation induced by air and heat, in addition to the effect of storage, was studied. The principal effect in aging and oxidation is formation of pitch at the expense of the distillate fraction. The fraction boiling above 270° C. is mainly involved in pitch formation due to storage, whereas all fractions are affected to some degree when tar is heated at 125° C. in the presence of air. If the effects of air are considered, the aromatic and tar-acid fractions seem to be important in pitch formation.
