The copper-clay deposits consist largely of goethite and clayey mudstones carrying native copper, cuprite, and chalcocite. The mudstones are of Ordovician age, are interbedded with Fe-Mn carbonates, and probably contained syngenetic iron and copper sulphides. The secondary copper minerals have been derived from post-Devonian weathering in situ and also by deposition from surfaee and underground waters draining the adjacent mineralized volcanic rocks.

In the Pennsylvania anthracite region, the principal source of U.S. anthracite, refuse disposal problems are common since cities and towns are located over the anthracite measures. The Bureau of Mines surveyed refuse banks in the area, determining that 863 banks containing aver 910 million cubic yards of material occupy a total area of about 19 square miles. The vast bulk of the refuse is located within 2 miles of the traffic centers of incorporated c unities which have a total population of 625,000. Twenty-seven banks are burning, causing considerable distress in a number of communities.

The Bureau of Mines has written a computer program for the design and cost of a shell and tube type heat exchanger, in which a change in phase occurs on the shell side. The total cost, which was minimized, includes the annual fixed charges and annual operating costs. The program was written to meet the following requirements: (1) Triangular pitch, (2) single or multiple pass, and (3) heating or cooling. Price optimum design was obtained for four standard tube diameters and pitch. Standard heat exchangers whose area equaled or exceeded the required area are also listed. The program was made adaptable to various fluids and to various tube dimensions by including many of the required data such as physical properties of the fluids, tube data, and standard shell data as input data.

Threshold displacement pressures are needed to determine how much overpressure can be used in storing natural gas. An experimental technique for determining threshold pressures by displacing water with gas from samples saturated with water is presented. Threshold pressures for eight low permeability samples were measured. Threshold pressure data obtained in this work, plus data on higher permeability samples reported in the literature, are correlated with porosity, permeability, surface tension and formation resistivity factor. Mercury injection pressures also were measured and correlated with air-water threshold pressures. Threshold pressures were found to be independent of time. An aerial photograph of gas emerging from the top of a core shortly alter its threshold pressure has been exceeded shows that the gas bubbles are uniformly distributed across the face of the core. Channeling will occur, however, when an increased gas phase permeability is reached, A porous medium can be re resealed alter its threshold pressure has been reached, provided it has not been desaturated below a fixed saturation. Its new threshold pressure will be lower than when the sample is 100 percent saturated with water. INTRODUCTION The degree of overpressure in excess of the discovery pressure that a gas storage reservoir can withstand is determined by the ability of its caprock to contain gas, providing the pressure does not exceed the structural limit of the reservoir. The retention of gas in a reservoir by a caprock saturated with water is a result of the capillary forces acting at the gas water interface. Without the presence of water in a caprock, gas would leak out of the reservoir at a rate determined by the permeability of the caprock to gas. The ability of a caprock to contain gas is expressed in terms of its threshold displacement pressure, which is defined as the minimum pressure needed to initiate the displacement of a wetting phase by a nonwetting phase from a porous medium 100 percent saturated with the wetting phase. The gas industry must be able to predict how much "overpressure" a gas reservoir can withstand before leakage occurs by gas displacing water from caprock overlying the reservoir. This is of economic importance since the storage capacity of a gas reservoir is proportional to its pressure. The discovery pressure for most reservoirs is found between the upper and lower limits1 shown in Fig. 1. Discovery pressures in excess of their hydraulic pressure gradient are attributed to the compaction of an isolated shale formation by the overburden.2.3 The lower limit of 0.433 psi/ft corresponds to the weight of the overburden, the gradient of the rock itself. A combined reflection seismic and magnetic survey off the south coast of New South Wales has revealed six distinct reflection horizons within the Lower Triassic- Upper Permian sequence, and has enabled the upper part of the Illawarra Coal Measures to be mapped in considerable detail. Large magnetic anomalies in the eastern half of the survey area appear to originate in the Gerringong Volcanic Sequence which forms the magnetic basement in this survey. Small residual anomalies in the western half of the area can be correlated with small scale faulting and folding in the uppert part of the Illawarra Coal Measures, as revealed by the seismic reflection survey. A synclinal axis striking at approximately 55¦ has been mapped near the western margin of the survey area, and areas of faulting and folding have been outlined by com- bined analysis of seismic and magnetic results.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the metallothermic reduction of copper oxide as a function of temperature, reactant proportions, form of reductant, and gaseous environment, using iron and steel scrap reductants. The reaction proceeded rapidly with powdered iron at temperatures above 560° C, attaining over 95 percent copper metallization within 3 hours. The importance of inter-reactant contacts on the extent of the reaction was evident from the variable, but usually lesser, degree of metallization obtained with iron from tin cans and automobile steel scrap. Reduction decreased as the molar ratio of copper to iron increased between 1 and 3. The most favorable gaseous environment for the reaction was a static helium atmosphere containing about 0.6 percent water vapor. Ferrothermic extraction of copper from its oxides appears to be essentially a "solid-state cementation" process. While ordinary cementation processes must be preceded by leaching, the ferrothermic method avoids this generally slow step and also the water pollution caused by the leaching agents. Sulfidic copper concentrates could likewise be reduced with metallic iron following their complete oxidative roasting.

Various models are discussed for the evaluation of the negative pressures which may occur in solidifying materials which exhibit various deformation modes: elastic-plastic, Bingham, viscous, or creep flow. The inadequacy of the previously proposed elastic-plastic solution for solidifying metals is revealed by comparison with the more reliable creep results which are given graphically for aluminum, copper, nickel, and iron. The maximum tensions experienced in the liquid phase of solidifying spheres ranging in size from large castings to submicron powders are in the range from —10' to —105 atm for these metals. THERE has been much recent interest in the negative pressures associated with the volume change on solidification and in the possibility of the occurrence of cavitation. Considering the freezing of a highly supercooled liquid, an attempt to evaluate the stresses in the liquid ahead of the rapidly moving solidification front has been made by Horvay1 on a microscale and by Glicksman2 on a macroscale. In a casting of a wide freezing range alloy, the pressure differential due to viscous flow of residual liquid through the pasty zone has been discussed by Piwonka and Flemings,3 In a previous publication4 the author has attempted to estimate the negative pressure occurring in the residual liquid of a spherical casting, employing an elastic-plastic model to describe the collapse of the solidified shell under the internal tension. An earlier model assuming a rigid shell was shown to be inaccurate by many orders of magnitude. The elastic-plastic model is critically reviewed here, and other models are developed which are thought to be more closely related to metals and other materials near their melting points. The spherical geometry (Fig. 1) is chosen because the highest shrinkage pressures would be developed, although the analyses are readily adaptable to cylindrical geometry. A parallel sided casting experiences little internal tension because of the relatively easy dishing inward of the sides. (This commonly observed phenomenon has previously been attributed solely to atmospheric pressure.) Furthermore, small regions of confined liquid in a large solidified volume of a casting approximate reasonably well to spherical geometry. ELASTIC-PLASTIC MODEL The author has shown4 that as solidification proceeds the internal hydrostatic tension builds up until the elastic limit of the shell is exceeded. At this point the internal pressure is closely -2Y/3. Subsequently a plastic zone spreads from the inner surface toward the outer surface of the shell. When the whole casting is deforming plastically a rather more generalized analysis taking account of the externally applied pressure PA + 2y/b gives the internal pressure as: P = Pa + 2y/a + 2ys/b - 2 Y In(b/a) [1] The 2y/a and 2ys/b terms result from the tendency of the liquid-solid and solid-vapor interfaces to shrink, reducing their energy, and thereby helping to collapse the solid phase and compress the liquid phase. The 2y/b term would be important only for powders. The last term arises because of the plastic restraint of the solid, resisting collapse and so effectively expanding the residual liquid. From Eq. [I] it is easily shown that there is a minimum in the pressure at the radius amia= y/Y [2] which is of the order of 103K for the metals aluminum, copper, and iron, and corresponds to the minimum pressure Pmin = 2 Y[l-ln(bY/y [3] The results of a fully worked out elastic-plastic solution are given in a previous reporL4 The main criticism which may be leveled at this analysis when applied to metals at their melting points is the strong dependence of the yield stress on the strain rate. The strain rate varies with both solidification conditions (e.g., whether chill-cast or slowly cooled) and during solidification, as is indicated in the following section. Thus an appropriate choice of Y is very arbitrary. Before proceeding to a discussion of models which are strain-rate-dependent, it is necessary to evaluate the strain rate as a function of the rate of solidification. SOLIDIFICATION RATE Various empirical relations have been deduced5 for the rate of thickening of the solid shell by pour- out tests on partially solidified spheres. These, however, are unsatisfactory for our purposes since they become very inaccurate when the liquid core is very small. A theoretical approach is therefore necessary, and some solutions are set out below. "Dust samplers are based on different principles. The konimeter is based on the number of particles counted; mining applications are based on routine sampling; and the photometrical evaluation of samples is used after the pre-separation of particles above 5 micron by the mining konimeter. In special cases, the Draeger sampler is used for quantitative analysis. General trends are toward larger samples, concentration on a weight basis, fractionation into size groups by different techniques and an analysis of composition. Standards or TLVs already exist in all industries. Surface industries base their criteria on concentrations and quartz contents in particles below 5 micron. The mining industry uses the tyndalloscope routinely to determine concentrations; concurrent] y, the rock content, as deter-mined by ashing samples, is obtained by konimeter.Threshold limits are related to the rock content in respirable fractions and tyndallometrically determined concentrations. The TL Vs are based empirically on Landwehr's ""dust values,"" as agreed upon with the Mines Inspectorates. Recently, and in accurate sampling, dust samplers have been used that count the dust in two fractions -above and below 5 microns. Mineral composition is determined either for all minerais or just for quartz. In assessing the dust hazard by Landwehr's ""dust values,"" all minerais are taken into consideration; in coal dust sampling, however, only the quartz content is taken into account. Efforts are now being made to co-ordinate the different assessment methods, arriving at uniform MAC values in agreement with those of other countries."

QUENCHED, bcc p brass, P1, transforms to a mar-tensitic phase, when it is cooled below room temperature.' This transformation can be followed using resistance measurements since the resistivity of the martensitic phase is considerably larger than that of the parent phase, Fig. 1.' phillips3 first reported that, when Cu-Zn alloys containing between 37.0 and 39.0 wt pct Zn were quenched from the 0 region to room temperature, variable amounts of a phase could be observed depending on the mode of quenching. If the quench occurs very rapidly, the a phase forms by a "massive transformation". The resultant phase has the same composition as the high-temperature P phase from which it was formed. If the quench is less severe, the alloy is retained largely in the p form; however, some a is formed by precipitation. In this case, a contains more copper than the high-temperature 0 phase from which it has formed. The a phase most probably does not undergo a transformation in the temperature range where p transforms to low-temperature martensite. This can be deduced from the Eesistivity-temperature relation which is linear in this temperature range, Fig. 2. The stable a phase which is present along with R. E. The problem of stability of slopes in reservoirs is one of real interest in civil engineering. The problem is whether the valley walls will remain stable or whether they are likely to slide as conditions are changed by storage of water in the reservoir. If major slides are indicated, as on the walls of relatively steep canyons, one must estimate whether they will be so located and of sufficient size as to interfere with operation of the reservoir-as by blocking the outlets, or by displacing sufficient water to over-top the dam in a huge wave. Some cases involve problems in soil mechanics for slides in earth or weaker rock; other locations need the assistance of rock mechanics for slides in harder rock. While this is not a new problem, attention has recently been focused on its importance by the hugh landslide into the Vaiont reservoir in 1963, which claimed the lives of over 2000 people and forced abandonment of the dam and powerhouse.

Volume-rate-of-flow measurements were made of the flow of mercury through porous samples under conditions of no field, magnetic field transverse to the direction of flow, and transverse magnetic field and electric current to determine if a magnetic method might be potentially useful in the study of pore-size distribution. No change was observed in the flow rate from the application of a magnetic field alone. The application of both field and current produced an electromagnetic pumping action with or against the direction of flow, depending upon the direction of the electric current. This pumping effect was observed to be greater in a rectangular porcelain sample than the calculated value for an equal-Sized open channel.

Measurements from an old survey are being machine processed as a pilot project in the development of a computer-assisted method of structural mapping in shield areas. The key element in the system is a field data sheet which requires the geologist to determine a textural hierarchy in each exposure. The pilot system is limited to orientation analysis and utilizes a prior textural analysis, but this would not usually be a problem in utilizing the system ab initio for exploration. A data processing system of this general type offers promise of considerably increased productivity of field geologists by reducing compilation time and improved technical supervision through centralization of processing, and would make structural analysis an economically viable tool in mining exploration and development.

"Results of a program of dust research carried out at the Mines Branch Laboratory, Elliot Lake, indicate that dust-concentration estimates vary greatly, depending on the sampling instrument, the assessment technique and the properties of the dust cloud. The wide range of the ratio between the estimates by any pair of instruments shows that the correlation between the health hazard and dust-concentration estimates by most existing sampling instruments must be questionable. Important studies are being carried out to permit the definition of mine environments in more precise technical terms. The influence of size selection, the physical property measured, composition and sampling period on the assessment of the health hazard are discussed."

The Bureau of Mines performed drill calibration tests on two industrial percussive drills of 2-5/8- and 3-1/2-inch piston diameters to determine operating characteristics for their use in conjunction with penetration rate data in developing drillability equations and furthering the knowledge of percussive drills. The use of a linear velocity transducer for measuring piston velocities and application of its instrumentation are described. Data presented include relationships between maximum piston velocity and feed air pressure other results confirm the theory or data of previous investigators, and some comparisons are made with the performance prediction formulas of other investigators.

The competitive market potential for solvent refined coal is estimated. Market advantages of solvent refined coal are enumerated. Markets are possible in combustion, railroad locomotion, and carbon electrodes. The combustion characteristics are consistent with expected air pollution restrictions on the emission of sulfur and particulate matter. A market potential of sufficient size exists to support the initiation of solvent refining in the United States. The market analysis should help fuel producers determine the advisability of their undertaking the solvent refining of coal.

An empirical equation for the prediction of the viscosity of several pure paraffin hydrocarbons and nitrogen is presented. It involves temperature, pressure and six constants of the material, and it applies reliably to both liquids and gases. The equation is similar in form to van der Waal's equation of state. For the paraffin hydrocarbons methane through r-hexane and nitrogen, an average absolute deviation of 1.9 percent was obtained on 1,006 data points described in the literature by 14 authors. When this equation is extended to complex, liquid hydrocarbon mixtures, a correlation was obtained with an average absolute deviation of 9.9 percent. INTRODUCTION Equations describing the flow of gas and liquid through porous media contain the viscosity coefficient of the fluid. If other pertinent variables remain constant, the volume rate of flow is inversely proportional to this coefficient. In dealing with condensate fluids and volatile oils, however, the compositional effects resulting from changing pressure materially affect the viscosity. The effect of compositional changes also may be significant in certain secondary recovery or pressure maintenance processes, notably miscible displacement or gas injection. Early attempts to describe the performance of reservoirs utilized a volumetric material balance method wherein gas and liquid in the reservoir were identified as produced gas and liquid at the surface. This method of analysis proved adequate for reservoirs at moderate temperature and pressure that contained gas with moderately low amounts of condensable materials. The volumetric material balance procedures for "black oil" reservoirs leave much to be desired when applied to condensate and volatile oil reservoirs because phase behavior and compositional changes are relatively more important in these cases. The alternative is a compositional material balance, which in turn, requires a correlation of properties of the reservoir fluid with composition. This paper supplies this correlation in regard to viscosity, for reservoir crude oils. REVIEW OF LITERATURE The literature contains many empirical equations describing the effects of composition, temperature and pressure on the viscosities of pure liquids and binary liquid mixtures. However, the applicability of a majority of these equations is limited to very low pressures and to a small number of systems. Most of them, when applied to complex hydrocarbon systems, are of little value. The lack of utility of the majority of equations results from the fact that they were developed to show the separate effect of temperature, pressure or composition on viscosity, but not to predict the viscosity as a function of all three variables. And with the few exceptions noted below, they were developed to apply to much simpler systems than hydrocarbon mixtures. Eakin1 developed an equation for the viscosity of pure light hydrocarbons applicable in the gas, liquid and dense fluid regions, and in its most general form is written as µ - µo =A(ebP - e-cpk) The pure component viscosity at atmospheric pressure and temperature T, µo, was calculated using the Sutherland equation: µo = BT3/2/T + S The constants in Eakin's equation permitted the term e-CPk to become quite small at high densities (above 0.215 gm/cc), and the general equation would simplify to
