The CO2-absorbent canisters used in four approved rescue breathing apparatus were investigated. A breathing machine was used to simulate human expiration with gas flow rates of 26, 37, and 48 1/min of 3.5% CO2 in air. The exit gas CO2 concentration, the pressure drop across the canister, and the exit-gas temperature were monitored. The absorbent capacities of the packed-bed canister designs were found to be dependent on flow rate within the range studied, while the capacities of the other designs were less affected. The radial canister had the least resistance to breathing while the complex bed design proved to be the most effective in utilization of the chemical. The overall results indicated that LiOH (lithium hydroxide) has the highest capacity for CO2 absorption among the absorbents tested. It can be used in a simple packed-bed design while maintaining acceptable levels of resistance and exit-gas temperature. Examination of oxygen supply with respect to CO2-absorption capacity suggested that it is desirable to closely match CO2-absorption capacity with the avail-able O2 supply to minimize the size and weight of rescue breathing apparatus.

Industries dependent on pyrometallurgical processing generally find themselves facing a common set of problems, namely, serious environmental restrictions, heavy capital requirements for new facilities and for plant modernization, the certainty of rapidly escalating fuel costs, and the uncertainty of fuel availability. To remain competitive, it has become clear to industry that a new dimension of attention must be given to assuring the maximum performance from plant facilities already in place and from those that are built in the future. In the last decade or so, in response to these needs, there has been an acceleration in the development of new pyrometallurgical process concepts. Their application, though spotty, is increasing. A common factor in this developing base of technology is the need for effective process control. Digital control is an indispensable element of meeting the challenge. We cannot make the point, however, by looking to a general survey of instrumental control of pyrometallurgical processes. Computer control is in its awkward adolescence. Its application is so new that only isolated applications can highlight the trends. For this reason, the authors have chosen to focus on the nonferrous smelting industry to illustrate the status of pyrometallurgical processing and control. We believe this approach will best meet the interests of most readers of this edition and the background of the authors.

This paper summarizes and emphasizes the potential importance of Canadian rare-earth occurrences, and recommends that efforts to locate and evaluate rare-earth deposits should be increased. Increasing world markets, depending on intensive applied research into the numerous unique and remarkable chemical and physical properties of the rare-earth elements (REE), are developing; their properties and uses are becoming better known; methods of separation are much improved. The REE group comprises a Cerium (Light) subgroup of 7 metals and an Yttrium (Heavy) subgroup of 9 metals. REE are trace elements in many rocks and minerals, and major constituents of more than 50 rare-earth minerals, many of which are difficult to detect and identify. They occur preferentially in acidic and alkaline igneous and metamorphic rocks, including carbonatites, as well as in placer deposits, certain uranium deposits, phosphate rocks and others. The main ores now are bastnaesite (in Precambrian carbonatite), monazite and xenotime (in Recent beach sands) as well as uraninite and brannerite (in Huronian quartz-pebble conglomerate) and loperite (perovskite) and apatite (in alkaline complexes). World resources are summarized. Twenty mines in 1973 produced an estimated world total of about 31,000 tons of contained rare-earth oxides (REO), 19,341 tons of which came from one mine at Mountain Pass, California. A selected fifteen, of 315 or more Canadian occurrences, are briefly described and compared, and their relative merits indicated. Their abundance and variety suggest the possibility of finding high-grade deposits in many geological terranes in Canada.

The asbestifom habit is most commonly developed in certain amphiboles and chrysotile, but other minerals may also crystallize with this unususual habit, The habit may be characterized by 1) a fibril structure, single or twinned crystals of very small widths (generally less than 0.5 inn) which have gram with a common fiber axis direction but which are disoriented in the other crystallographic directions, 2) anomalous optical properties, primarily parallel extinction, 3) unusual tensile strength, 4) high aspect ratio, and 5) flexibility. In addition, there is evidence to indicate that some amphibole asbestos may have unusual surface properties.

Alternative methods of analyzing data acquired by the Morenci copper concentrator process control instrument-computer system are presented. Experimental measures of ore characteristics, for proposed feed forward control, are introduced. These include on-line indexes of ore hardness, ore density, ore dusting, and ore color. Comparison of metallurgical results before and after computerized process control implementation, allowing for differing ore grades, oxidation, hardness, and fineness of grind, also is described.

This paper discusses the evolution of a modeling methodology for explaining price behavior in the aluminum industry. Three generations are described, each utilizing as a foundation a microeconomic stages-of-processing approach. The second generation represents an improvement over the initial version, by incorporating more rigorous specifications of energy cost, and market strength (demand-supply balance) as well as endogenous treatment of market strength. International linkages across prices, costs, and markets, are the major extensions in the third generation. The discussion covers theoretical considerations, data problems and limitations, and model specifications. Simulation and forecasting properties of the models are also addressed.

Whilst coalmining in the United Kingdom has been synonymous with longwall mining practice there have been changes in recent times which have enabled not only an extension in the length of the face to be worked but also in the ability to extract both thick and thinner seams. Additionally the industry has taken a positive view in the extension of retreat methods of extraction applied for different reasons both to particularly thick and specially thin seams. To permit development of a flexible programme to meet these diverse needs, it has been necessary to design machinery along with mining systems specially suited to these requirements. In reviewing current UK thinking special emphasis is made on the extraction of thinner seams generally of higher quality coal at moderate depths with a commentary on some recent results.

"2.1. General Considerations and Properties2.1.1. IntroductionOur present knowledge of the platinum-group elements (POE) is extensive, the reason being two-fold. The elements have many uses and, moreover, they exhibit extremely varied chemical behaviour, depending on their state of oxidation and chemical environment. The present chapter reviews a selected body of material which is of particular relevance to mineralogy and geochemistry.Comprehensive treatises on the POE include those by Mellor (1956-1957), Gmelin (1938-1957) and Pascal (1958). The inorganic chemistry, particularly coordination chemistry, has been dealt with in works by Griffith (1967), Hartley (1973) and Livingstone (1975), and the analytical chemistry by Walsh and Hausman (1963), Beamish (1966) and Beamish and Van Loon (1972, 1977). Darling (1973) and Savitsky (1978) have reviewed the metallurgical properties and applications of the metals. Goldberg and Helper (1968) have reviewed the thermochemistry and oxidation potentials of POE systems, and Wagman et at. (1969) have also provided selected values of their thermodynamic properties. The geochemistry of the POE has been reviewed by Yushko-Zakharova et at. (1967), Cousins (1973), Cabri (1974), and Naldrett and Duke (1980).Platinum was used briefly as a coinage metal in ImperialRussia. Otherwise, the principal early use for platinum and its alloys was in the fabrication of chemically resistant apparatus. Subsequently, a large part of platinum production was utilized for catalysts in the sulphuric acid and ammonia industries. Platinum has been replaced by vanadium pentoxide in the manufacture of sulphuric acid, but, in recent times, catalytic upgrading of petroleum and emission control systems for automobiles have opened further huge markets for the metal. All of the POE find uses either as reagents or catalysts in the synthesis of organic compounds, e.g., in the Wacker process, which uses palladium chloride to catalyze the production of acetaldehyde from ethylene. There are, of course, a large number of specialized uses for the elements, particularly in alloys, temperature measurement devices, cancer therapy and so on."

INTRODUCTION By the end of 1979 pellet productive capacity from the processing of low grade iron ores in the Lake Superior-District will total 86 million tons per year. Of that tonnage, 72 million result from the processing of magnetic ores such as taconite, about 6 million tons from the flotation processing of relatively coarse grained specular hematite, and 8 million tons from the processing of fine grained non- magnetic ores at Tilden. The Tilden flowsheet represents a break- through in the processing of this type of crude ore and hence is unique in the Lake Superior District (1). Operations at Tilden started in late 1974 with Algoma Steel, J&L Steel Corp., The Cleve- land-Cliffs Iron Company, The Steel Company of Canada, Ltd., Wheeling- Pittsburgh Steel Corp., and Sharon Steel Corp. as participants. Cleveland-Cliffs operates and manages the operation. Other companies have conducted extensive pilot plant tests or are in commercial production in the processing of fine grained non-magnetic ore materials (2). Flowsheets and reagent schedules may be different for each particular application, but some of the problem areas in the processing of Tilden ores have also been experienced at operations such as the IOC Plant at Sept-Isles, at Lamco and at Bong in Liberia, and in pilot testing of Fabrica ores of Ferteco Mineracao in Brazil. With a grind of about 80-85% -500 mesh resulting in 50% of the particles in the concentrate being less than 15 microns, a discussion of the pro- cessing of Tilden type ores fits the topic of this workshop. There are very large tonnages of fine grained non-magnetic crude ores which exist throughout the Lake Superior District and other iron ore producing regions. This Bureau of Mines report describes methods to electrodeposit erosion-resistant titanium diboride coatings from molten alkali metal borate baths at 900° C. These coatings have been shown to be highly resistant to material loss during impingement with high-velocity alumina and silicon carbide powders, and they show promise as protective coatings to reduce metal loss in erosive chemical environments, such as coal gasification systems. The most erosion-resistant coatings were prepared on nickel, Inconel, and molybdenum from an electrolyte containing LiBO2, NaBO2, Na2Ti03, and TiO2. The best coatings were deposited at current densities of [~]20 ma/cm2, using titanium or titanium diboride anodes. Erosion-resistant coatings were shown to exhibit (1) a high degree of crystallographic orientation along the (100) or (110) planes, (2) a chromium impurity level of less than 3 pct, and (3) a uniform, smooth, consolidated surface appearance when viewed under a microscope or by scanning electron microscopy. Optical spectroscopic studies of the molten electrolyte suggest that the lower valent (+3) titanium ion predominates in the baths.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, conducted field tests on acidic copper tailing as part of its program to devise, improve, and demonstrate technology for stabilizing mining and mineral processing wastes. Results will be presented from successful 1/8-acre and 1-1/2-acre demonstration revegetation plots established in 1973 and 1974 on an abandoned copper tailing pond located on public land adjacent to Holden Village, Wash. The tailing was neutralized with treatments of either dolomitic lime or limerock and fertilized with processed sewage sludge and/or commercial fertilizer. Plant growth covering 60 percent of the surface was achieved on both test plots. Regar brome, Tegmar intermediate wheatgrass, and tall wheatgrass provided the best plant growth and surface coverage. In neutralizing the tailing, the target pH of 6.8 was not achieved; however, good plant growth occurred in areas where the pH ranged from 2.9 to 5.8.

Roof failures in underground coal mines are related to the lithology and geologic structure of the roof. There are two distinct suites of roof rock above the Herrin (No. 6) Coal in Illinois, and each has distinctive patterns of structure and roof failure. In black shale-limestone roof areas, roof instability is correlated with thinning of limestone beds and presence of faults and clay dikes. In gray shale roof regions, the prime roof hazards are posed by rolls, shear bodies, and presence of coal or carbonaceous partings in the roof. Most structural features examined are believed to have formed during early stages of sediment diagenesis and compaction. Structural trends and lithologic patterns are strongly interdependent for this reason. In many cases geologic patterns are so complex and locally variable that prediction of roof stability far in advance of mining is difficult. The need for greater flexibility in roof control planning is apparent.

This report describes a method developed by the Bureau of Mines for sealing horizontal degasification holes so that they do not create a gas explosion hazard when intercepted by mining. A cement slurry is pumped into the hole through an injection pipe that extends to the back of the hole. Pumping continues until the slurry returns through the annulus to the hole collar. The hole is then shut in and the grout allowed to harden. Application of the procedure to six horizontal degasification holes at Eastern Associated Coal Corp.'s Honey Run shaft is discussed.

In 1977, the Bureau of Mines awarded a grant to the State of South Carolina to explore the possibility of using Landsat multispectral scanner (MSS) data as an aid in monitoring surface mining activities in selected counties of the State. Work had been done in Aiken County prior to the grant by Bureau of Mines and State personnel at the EROS Data Center using both the GE Image 100 and ESL IDIMS systems. The initial work on the 1-100 consisted of locating and measuring the areas of various kaolin mines. The results were excellent on location, identification, and accurate area measurements of several mines as compared with aerial photos of each mine. The effort also included locating and measuring the size of all mines (including sand and gravel) within two U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) 7 ½ min quadrangle maps. Line printer overlays using the IDIMS equipment and software resulted in the location of all known mines within an estimated error less than ±91.4m (5300 feet). Mine acreage was calculated by counting each symbol (which represented one pixel) and multiplying by 1.1 (the number of acres per pixel). Figure 1 shows a portion of one quadrangle overlay. Table I gives a comparison of acreage measured for sever- al mines from the 1-100 and IDIMS systems vs. aerial photo measurements.

In Australia's remote North West are located the operations of Cliffs Robe River, one of the world's largest iron ore projects. Initial project cost was $US300 million and required the construction of a deepwater port, two toms for 3000 people, a 105 Mw power station and 170 km of railroad, all in harsh, arid country over 1300 km from the nearest industrial centre. The ore occurs as goethite cappings on scattered mesas and averages 57 percent iron. All aspects of the project are reviewed from pre-operational research, through project construction to current operation.

Toxic gases produced by the detonation of six explosives were measured in an underground hardrock metal mine during actual mining operations. The six explosives included two semigelatin dynamites, three slurry explosives and an ammonium nitrate, fuel-oil/ammonia dynamite combination. Explosives were detonated at the face of a drift and the toxic gases produced by the detonation were trapped to the end of the drift by a bulkhead located a short distance away from the face. Toxic gas concentrations were then measured with direct readout instruments and together with the containment volume, the toxic gas volumes per mass of explosive were calculated. Toxic gas measurements were found in the following ranges (ft3/lbm): NO, 0.010-0.035; NO2, 0.003-0.019; CO, 0.08-0.30; S02, 0.00-0.05; and CO2, 0.7-1.8. Results showed that toxic gas production (ft3/lbm) correlated with the densities (kg/m3) and energy densities (kJ/kg) of the explosives tested.

A deep cutting continuous miner, HH456, was tested under production-mining conditions at the Joanne Mine, Rachel W. Va., for about 1 ½ years (226 production days). The miner was run in two modes: a low head-rpm, deep cutting and high rpm, shallow-cutting mode. These tests confirmed that deep cutting and slow cutter speed reduce respirable dust significantly under production mining conditions. Quantitative reductions in dust, in deep vs shallow cutting, were 73°; in return air and 63% at the operator's location. Production rate, (tons/shift), and bit consumption rate did not show any relationship to deep or shallow cutting. Reliability and maintainability of the miner were worse in deep cutting mode due to cutter drive shaft failures; the cutter shaft problem was solved through improved material and design. It can be useful to model the mean grade values for a metal in mineral deposits containing that metal as representing the extreme value tail of a lognormal frequency distribution for the concentration values of the metal in rocks of all types. Results for copper and zinc in the Abitibi area of the Canadian Shield are compared to results previously obtained for the Canadian Appalachian Region. The lognormal model is also applied to a set of 162 large gold deposits in the Abitibi area. In the second part of the paper, 1311 large and small gold deposits in the Abitibi area are modelled as discrete events. By means of a newly developed spatial clustering model it is possible to predict the variances of random variables for frequencies of deposits in cells of different sizes.

In situ mining is now considered an alternative mining method for some ore bodies. The in situ operation consists of a well field designed from reservoir properties and geological information; the wells for such a field are then drilled, cased, and cemented, using good designs and practices to eliminate future problems. Injection and production (recovery) systems are required to be corrosion resistant. Hand in hand with the mining operation is the metal extraction plant, the entire operation offering an environmentally acceptable method for metal recovery. Great opportunity exists in this field for mineral engineers; presently, they must borrow knowledge from other fields, since the schools have not yet addressed this specialty.

"9.1. IntroductionThe application of the electron microprobe for in-situ analysis of platinum-group minerals (PGM), first reported by Borovskii et at. (1959) and Genkin (1959), has resulted in a large and growing number of analyses of unidentified PGM. Figure 9.1 charts the increase in the number of reported unnamed PGM from 3 in 1959 to a total of 140 by 1979. All these minerals, with the exception of UN1968-5 and UN1976-1, were analyzed with the electron microprobe.There has been no recognised or consistent manner for reporting these unidentified PGM. The term ""unnamed"" has been used for PGM that are considered to be new species without a name as well as for PGM which have not been exhaustively compared to named and unnamed PGM in order to determine whether they are unique. Many of the so-called unnamed PGM are only unnamed because of poor microprobe analyses or because larger than usual elemental substitutions (e.g. Bi for As) made it difficult to calculate the true stoichiometry. Some of these unnamed minerals have been unnecessarily reported with non-stoichiometric formulae, as discussed by Cabri (1980). Better analytical data should reduce the number of such proposals.Another unfortunate practice, possibly used to by-pass the scrutiny of the Commission for New Minerals and Mineral Names, I.M.A., is to report a ""new"" mineral by referring to it by a name made up of its constituent elements. This has been deplored on a number of occasions (cf. discussion in Fleischer et at., 1976, p. 179), but some journals continue to publish such material. The Commission on New Minerals and Mineral Names has not recognised such ""names"" and these PGM are therefore included in this chapter with other unnamed minerals.A further example of inconsistency in reporting unnamed minerals is the report of a specific ideal stoichiometry with no further details (not even an analysis!); sometimes with a note that this will be reported in greater detail in due course. I have also been guilty of similar optimistic statements and, unfortunately, it is not always possible to follow through. Some authors give data on unnamed minerals in such a discrete manner that their reports are sometimes missed in literature searches."
