The operation of cyclones and cylinders is briefly described and com- pared, and a number of recent applications in mineral, gold and coal plants discussed. The capacity of an existing pump and cyclone in a circuit can be sig- nificantly increased by retrofitting a cylinder in series to predensify the cyclone feed. The cyclone overflow product size can also be adjusted and controlled using a variable aperture valve between the cylinder and the cyclone. This predensifier-cyclone system has been used at plant scale to con- trol the pulp density of the feed to cyanidation in gold plants, to size flotation feeds before split conditioning and to deslime and classify in gravity plants. Application in a typical regrind circuit is considered. Cylinders and cyclones also have numerous applications in water management systems, e.g., degritting mine and plant waters to protect pumps, sprays and other equipment. Screen undersize and flotation con- centrate dewatering circuits are described to illustrate how suitable stream recycles can reduce water consumption, optimize fresh water use and improve efficiency.

A description is given of an investigation into the feasibility of using controlled recirculation of warm exhaust air into the cold intake air of underground mines during winter. Canadian mines can experience inlet air temperatures of minus 30 ¦C and less, requiring them to pre-heat their intake air. The use of controlled recirculation would reduce the inlet air quantity and thus reduce heating costs which exceed $1M on some mines.

SYNOPSIS This paper describes simple calculations to evaluate the stability of hangingwall and footwall strata at the work¬ing face and in backfilled areas. It shows that the benefits of support provided by backfill can best be realized when the fill is placed as close to the face as possible. The main beneficial effects of fill are that it reduces the stope span, at the same time providing a damping effect on vibrations, and prevents the fall-out of blocks in filled areas, thus maintaining the competence of the strata.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to assess the effectiveness of different chain pillar designs in maintaining gate entry stability. The study described in this paper was performed in a 1200 ft long, experimental headgate section which contained three pillar designs: - a three-entry, yield-abutment pillar' system, - a four-entry, yield-yield-abutment pillar system, and - a five-entry, all-yield pillar system. As the longwall mined by the experimental section, Bureau engineers monitored entry convergence, roof sag, and changes in roof quality. The results of the study indicate that the all-yield system performed at least as well as, and probably better than, the two abutment pillar systems.

The paper describes a spreadsheet system that enables selection of projects and companies that meet the user's corporate exploration and/or acquisition philosophy. A regularly maintained commercially available database has been used as the basis for this system. It provides an easily accessible efficient com- prehensive search method. The technique enables ranking by various criteria, both technical and financial, to provide groups of projects/companies that are of interest. Initially, target size parameters such as reserves, production and mine life are applied together with geological criteria such as age and deposit type; the significance of the targets in the context of the Australian gold industry is addressed.

Since gold was first discovered, mining development in the West Australian goldfields has been heavily dependent on the location of groundwater both for potable and mineral processing supplies . The location of adequate and economic sources of water has been a constant challenge to both explorers and developers throughout the history of the goldfields. The provision of a piped supply from Mundaring in 1903 greatly alleviated pressure on scarce resources, lowered mining costs and permitted the orderly development of infrastructure. However, increases in the demand for water resulting from new mineral discoveries over the past three decades has led to renewed pressures for more local supplies to be established. Wide-ranging groundwater exploration took place in the late 1960's and early 1970's, also, more recently, in support of intensified gold exploration. The collation and interpretation of the hydrogeological data from the whole goldfields region indicates that despite a low mean annual rainfall of between 180 and 350 mm, quite marked differences exist between the rates of groundwater recharge in different parts of the area, In general, these can be shown to diminish in a southerly direction contrary to a trend towards increases in annual rainfall. Recharge rates are related mainly to differences in rock weathering pattern, geological structure and physiography. The same differences have controlled the pattern of groundwater salinity and the magnitude of groundwater storages associated with the palaeodrainages. In the vicinity of the northern and western watersheds with the Gascoyne, the superficial sediments tend to be thin, may have calcrete in the section and contain moderate storages of brackish or even fresh water. This contrasts with the lower regions of the palaeodrainages where calcrete is absent and deeper erosion has permitted the accumulation of relatively large thicknesses of fine-grained sediments which are saturated with hypersaline water and constitute substantial storages. Account must be taken of these characteristics if water supply sources are to be optimised to meet the growing demands for groundwater in the region.

Raw coal will often break intragranularly in either a completely random way or in a differential mode where one species will have a different rate of breakage than another. Locked coal-ash and coal-pyrite particles can also break by the preferential detachment of one species from another along zones of inherent weakness in locked particle assemblages. The mode. cf breakage is largely a function of the nature of the feed, but it is also influenced by the comminution device and the operating variables. Evidence of breakage of particles in the various modes is seen in the crushing of raw coal and middlings particles with a rotary beaker, jaw crusher, rolls, hammer mill and rod mill. Evidence from the literature indicates the detachment mode is often important for coal, ores and metallurgical products. Further confirmation comes from the crushing of a specially prepared 'ore' of sized magnetite in plaster of Paris.

Perhaps the only thing certain about an address that purports to look into the future of any human endeavour is that time will prove it :.o be inaccurate. In undertaking the dubious, but oft-times necessary business of prediction, thr, historian will base his/her forecasts on tr-ands of the past, the speculator on current events, and the politician on what he/she would dearly like to see happen. The thoughts expressed in this address seem to have arisen through exercising a combination of all three of those philosophies but, hopefully, with a smat- tering of pragmatism.

The objectives of this study were to (1) document the hydrologic impacts of longwall mining on ground water, (2) identify the factors which affect the extent of dewatering, and (3) develop empirical trends to predict the extent of dewatering and recovery in advance of mining. The study was confined to three mine sites in north-central West Virginia. At each site, available ground water supplies were identified and monitored for dewatering effects and recovery. Mine A, located in Upshur County, West Virginia, has relatively thin overburden (approximately 715-280 feet). At this site domestic water supplies and specially constructed monitoring wells were monitored, continuing with an earlier study done by Cifelli arid Rauch. Most such supplies were completely dewatered over the longwall panel. Some of these wells have shown significant recovery, especially near a stream. Extensive monitoring of two nested piezometer wells revealed that dewatering generally started in advance of undermining in the lowermost monitored overburden zones first and then progressed upwards. Most dewatered wells completed in bedrock have shown no recovery, except. for valley drilled wells located within 100 feet of a Stream. Affected dug wells completed in valley alluvium rend located within 200 feet. of the nearest stream have shown significant recovery. Some wells have partially collapsed following mine subsidence. Mine B, having relatively thick overburden (approximately 585 to 900 feet), is located in Monongalia County, West Virginia. Ground water supply surveys have been conducted there in an attempt to study past dewatering effects. Owners reported Chat several wells were dewatered by longwall mining arid vertical air shafts that preceded longwall mining. Dewatered wells over longwall panels hove shown some recovery within 3 ½ years of mining. Mine C also has relatively thick overburden (approximately 585-900 feet), and is located mostly in Greene County, Pennsylvania. In addition to a survey of domestic water supplies at this site, five specially constructed monitoring wells were tested. The shallow monitoring wells suffered drops in water level due to mining but totally recovered within one day to three weeks after dewatering occurred. However, they did occasionally exhibit partial collapse during mine subsidence. Subsidence fracturing was beneficial in increasing the lateral hydraulic conductivity by a factor of about S to 22 for rock strata located within 124 feet of the surface, indicating enhanced shallow aquifer potential. One deep well suffered both partial dewatering and structural damage, with the state of water recovery bring uncertain. Also, two shallow domestic supplies out of five located over the mine were reportedly dewatered, but this claim could not, be substantiated.

The real gross national product (GNP) advanced at a annual rate of 3.1 % during the second quarter, following a revised 3.4% increase in the first quarter (see table 1). Export growth continues to play an important role in the rising output. Combined with the decline in imports, it resulted in a noticeably improved trade position. Imports of consumer goods, including automobiles and food, fell while exports rose. Imported cars have been losing ground to domestic cars. The foreign car share of the U.S. market fell from 36% in October 1987, to 29% in May 1988. Business spending for new plant and equipment contributed strongly to the GNP increase. Equipment purchases, particularly of computers, rose at a 14.8% annual rate, following a large first-quarter gain. Purchases of structures rose 11.8%. The other key component of business spending, change in business inventories, declined from the first quarter. Inventory buildup in late 1987 had been considered excessive.

In 1986 the Bureau of Mines conducted a probability sample survey, Mining Industry Population Survey, to measure such employee characteristics as occupation; principal equipment operated; work location at the mine; present job, present company, and total mining experience; job-related training during the last 2 years; age; sex; race; and education. The population estimates are necessary to properly analyze the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) injury (includes illness and fatality data) statistics; that is, to compare and contrast injury rates for various subpopulations in order to identify those groups that are exhibiting higher than average injury rates. This report uses the survey's results to characterize the U.S. nonmetallic mining workforce from March through September 1986. Similar reports have been prepared for the metallic, stone, and sand and gravel mining industries, as well as for the entire metal and nonmetal mining (includes metallic, stone, sand and gravel, and nonmetallic industries) sector and the cool mining sector.

Production from a major, deep orebody requires the construction of two 6 m diameter, 1000 m deep ventilation shafts over the next three years. Further ventilation upgrades have foreshadowed an additional 1500 m of 6 m diameter shafts beyond that. After reviewing the construction alternatives it was decided to raisebore the first shaft in one pass using Western Mining Corporation's 121R raiseborer and the Wirth sequential head. The significant cost and speed of construction potential of 6 m raiseboring justified the risks associated with this new technology. Large diameter sequential head raiseboring has only been carried out in South Africa. Over the last three years many lessons have been learnt and the technology has progressed to being considered feasible. Operating practice and the optimisation of raiseboring performance for specific ground conditions are the areas requiring further work. The development of large diameter raiseboring in South Africa and the site preparation and initial operation at Z.C. Mines are described. Comment on actual operating experience includes the geotechnical investigations, the raiseborer foundations, cuttings disposal and the drilling of the pilot hole which has progressed to beyond 450 m. Unforeseen difficulties with the verticality of the pilot hole and with mud losses illustrate the types of problems that can be expected.

"Microbiological metal recovery is an emerging technology likely to play an increasing role in commercial ore leaching, metal removal from process and waste streams, and perhaps ultimately in processing to yield metal products in specified forms or oxidation states. We are studying the potential for using microorganisms for the recovery of elements important to emerging materials technologies and for which domestic supplies are limited and/or low grade. Examples to be discussed include the bioaccumulation of yttrium and gallium. These elements are important in the production of new superconductor and semiconductor materials. However, limited domestic reserves and technologies for their recovery may cause supply problems. Microbiological processes may offer new techniques for recovery of these and other strategic elements.IntroductionMicroorganisms in ore leachingMicroorganisms assist in the commercial leaching of copper and uranium from low grade ores (1,2) and recently have been shown to have immediate commercial potential for the pretreatment of refractory gold ores to increase the gold-cyanide recovery yield (3). INTRODUCTION Problems encountered in barite flotation from various waste materials such as spent drilling muds are likely to be closely connected with the effect of contaminant metal ions and other chemicals on the flotation. Investigations on the recovery of barite from tailings ponds and mining wastes (Sullivan and Lamot, 1981) have shown that such barite materials can contain large quantities of carbonate and silicate minerals (including clay minerals). Also iron oxide slimes can be present. From these substances, cations such as Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe2+, and A13+ can potentially dissolve and be present in the aqueous phase accompanying the various minerals. These ions and their hydrolysis products can have a substantial effect on any subsequent flotation scheme. The present study investigates the effect of the noted ions on both the stability and electrokinetic behavior of barite suspensions. Some adsorption (abstraction) experiments were also performed. Experimental materials and methods The barite used was a high-purity, naturally occur¬ring mineral sample (Kings Creek, SC). The material was ground in a porcelain mill and a fine fraction (mean particle size 11.49 µm) separated out by air elutriation. The mean size was determined by an aqueous sedimentation method using a CAHN electro-balance. In the method, an 0.6-g sample of the barite was dispersed in 450 cm3 of pH 7 water containing 0.01 g of sodium tripolyphosphate. The mean particle size was denoted X0. The stability of the barite suspensions was determined by a comparison of the mean size of the investigated barite suspension aggregations with the mean size of barite powder determined in the presence of sodium tripolyphosphate. The mean sizes (X) of the barite aggregations were determined using the same amount of water and barite sample as in the measurements of dispersed barite particle size but without the presence of polyphosphate. The ratio X/Xo is thus a measure of the stability of a suspension (the greater the ratio, the less stable the suspension). The adsorption (abstraction) experiments were carried out in polyethylene bottles containing 1 g of barite powder in 200 mL of solution. The solids were added to a solution containing a known concentration of metal chloride salts (AlCl3, FeCl2, MgCl2, and CaCl2) . The pH was controlled by both HCl and NaOH addition. The suspensions were agitated in a shaker for three hours. The final ion concentrations in solution were determined by atomic absorption analysis. The electrokinetic measurements were made using a Komline-Sanderson Zeta Reader in a conventional manner. All experiments were carried out in the presence of 1.0x10-3 k.mol/m3 NaClO4. "This paper outlines the results obtained when sampling twenty underground coal mine sections, each in a different mine. The sampling effort was oriented toward a detailed characterization of coal mine dusts and thus eight-stage Anderson Model 298 impactors were used as the primary collection instrument. This instrument allowed a rather detailed size distribution for each of the particulates sampled. Because four of the mines used diesel outby equipment and/or diesel shuttle cars at the face, it is possible to make some comparisons on the particulate distributions in diesel versus non-diesel mines.One of the more interesting results is the pattern that exists in mines that contain only diesels used for outby utility haulage. Particulate in these mines seem to be consistently heavy in the fine size ranges, perhaps being of significant concern to the industry. While no definite conclusions can be achieved from the limited data collected in this study, the data indicates that more detaile~ study of particulates in diesel mines is needed so that some idea of the particulate loadings in diesel mines can be achieved."

This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Also included are tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of Volume I and in the State chapters of Volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

A fully automatic image analysis system that consists of a microprobe, an energy dispersive x-ray analyzer, and an image analyzer was developed at CANME:I' to determine mineral behaviour that affects beneficiation. The interlacing between the instruments permits automatic identification and characterization of minerals in samples of unbroken ore pieces and of mill products. Different types of information are obtained for minerals in samples of unbroken ore pieces than in samples of mill products, and are used differently. For unbroken ore pieces size distributions are determined for discrete mineral grains to predict a grind at which they might be liberated, and other measurements are Irade to predict the percentage of mineral that occurs as nonrecoverable grains. For mill products the minerals are analysed to determine percentages that (1) are free, (2) are likely to be recovered in concentrates, (3) are likely to be lost to tailings, and (4) could be liberated with regrinding. The image analysis data for mill products are processed by a mineral-metals balance program to determine the distributions of free and unliberated mineral grains at each point in a concentrator, pilot plant or bench test. For samples containing trace minerals, such as gold, an automatic search technique is used to scan the entire area of the polished section for the trace mineral grains. The identified trace mineral grains are characterized with regard to size, liberation, and other properties.

Real gross national product3 (GNP) grew at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.2% in the fourth quarter compared with a revised 4.3% rate in the third quarter, according to the most recent estimates released by the U.S. Department of Commerce (table 1). Expanding inventories, Government purchases of goods and services, residential fixed investment, and a narrowing of the trade deficit fueled the growth. Significantly reduced consumer demand led to the heavy inventory growth. Almost half of the buildup in inventories consisted of automobiles because consumers reduced purchases when Detroit ceased most incentive programs in late summer. Reduced consumer demand also affected imports, however, and the narrowing of the trade deficit resumed after widening in the third quarter. Nonresi- [ ] dential fixed investment also declined after a strong gain in the third quarter. On a year-to-year basis, the economy grew at an inflation-adjusted rate of 2.9%, the same as that of 1986. However, on a fourth-quarter-to-fourth-quarter basis, the real growth reached 3.8%, the highest growth since 19M, and exceeded the Reagan Administration's estimate of 3.4%. Rising merchandise exports accounted for about one-third of the growth in GNP for all of 1987 and are expected to continue to grow as domestic manufactures benefit from the lower value of the dollar vis-a-vis other major trading country currencies. Consumer demand became a less important factor of economic growth, but employment continued to grow (table 2), and civilian unemployment declined by 0.9 percentage points (December to December) as the industrial sector geared up to increase exports. Inflation, as measured by the fixed-weighted GNP price index, remained low at 3.4%.

The Government signalled its intention in the Economic Statement on 17 December 1987 to improve the fairness of the taxation system and to facilitate the process of economic adjustment by: removing tax concessions that benefit some taxpayers at the expense of other taxpayers,ensuring that those who can afford it shoulder their fair share of the tax burden,securing a revenue base which will provide sufficient resources to maintain effective social services,reducing artificial protection and concessions that discriminate against some sectors, and encouraging confidence through an economic environment with a medium-term orientation. The Government has clearly stated to all sectors that tax preferences will be phased out and businesses need to look inwardly to their investment policies if they are to survive in an open economy. This paper will address the effect of these Government objectives on the taxation structure for all forms of mineral exploration in New Zealand. The present tax structure will firstly be analysed, in particular setting out the tax advantages available to the industry. The effect of changes to the tax system within the recent past which relate to mineral exploration will then be examined. Finally the paper will address the question of possible future changes, particularly in the light of Government's intention to move towards a tax system which does not provide an advantage for any one sector of the economy.
