Equivalent elastic properties of discontinuously jointed rock masses are computed using a non-representative volume element(NRVE) approach within a three dimensional finite element program. Joint persistence, defined as the percentage of a joint plane that is actually occupied by joint material, is used in the NRVE computations as a step towards greater realism in stability analysis of mine openings. Persistence p is also the probability that a segment of a joint plane is occupied by joint material. Computations reveal a threshold phenomenon in jointed rock mass moduli similar to that observed in percolation theory. A rapid decrease in moduli occurs above a critical value pc(about 0.6). A detailed analysis of the well-known solution for stress about a circular opening in isotropic, elastic ground illustrates the effects of joint set orientation, spacing and persistence. Although stable “on average”, joint segment failures reveal a threat to stability and point towards rational design of reinforcement or support of discontinuously jointed rock masses.

"Since 2005, longwall coal mine operators in Pennsylvania (US) have been required to collect extensive hydrologic and biological data to document pre- and post-mining conditions of aquatic resources (streams and wetlands) overlying the subsidence control plan areas. Continued operation of the longwall mine is dependent upon empirical data demonstrating that the undermined aquatic resources have either been maintained or restored to an accepted range of pre-mining conditions. This study used quantitative hydrologic methods and comparative biological metrics to examine response of aquatic resources to longwall subsidence at the Bailey Mine located in Greene County, Pennsylvania. This study analyzed data from over 25 miles of streams and over 8 acres of wetlands that traverse the 4,779-acre study area. Hydrologic analysis of flow intermittency suggested that there are variable degrees of change to headwater streams immediately following mining; however, the majority of the effects are reversible through streamflow mitigation measures. Furthermore, the post-mining discharge from streams can be restored to within the range of pre-mining conditions the majority of the time. Biological assessments showed that greater than 95% of assessed stream length has maintained its ability to support benthic macroinvertebrate communities following mining and intervention (i.e., mitigation). Comparative metrics of the benthic macroinvertebrate communities showed that the biological community in 48 of the 50 sample sites is being maintained or restored across both high- and low-gradient streams. The effectiveness of intervention was further substantiated by the similarity in recovery times between streams having no intervention (median = 2.1 years, 95th percentile = 4.9 years) and streams with intervention, when recovery times were measured from the date of the intervention (median = 1.7 years, 95th percentile = 4.7 years). Changes to individual wetlands were observed between the pre- and post-mining assessments, but cumulatively a net gain of 7% in wetland acreage was realized. Hydrologic assessments were used to infer whether there was a potential that streams had been affected by mining; however, the ultimate test of stream recovery is based on biological metrics that establish the relative quality of the biological communities following mining. Overall, the hydrologic balance is being protected and the aquatic life use of streams is being maintained within the Bailey Mine’s subsidence control plan areas."

Increasing pressure from State and Federal agencies to mitigate mining-induced subsidence damage to overlying structures has presented a unique problem to the coal industry in the western United States. Because sandstone escarpments are an environmental issue, millions of tons of coal reserves that underlie these escarpments risk being classified as unminable by regulatory agencies. At this time, the effect of subsidence on escarpments has not been well documented or characterized. The Bureau of Mines is using numerical modeling techniques to analyze escarpment response to longwall mining. Two- and three-dimensional finite element models have been constructed for a study area near Price, Utah, where longwall panels were mined near an escarpment. This status report includes preliminary results showing that the pattern of subsidence surrounding the escarpment can be simulated through numerical modeling. Models that include such structural details as joint and fracture patterns will better simulate subsidence patterns .and magnitude. By locating longwall panels strategically in relation to the escarpment, stability may be preserved throughout the mining process. Numerical modeling provides a method to analyze relatively quickly the effects of longwall panel location and resulting subsidence on escarpment stability. The goal is to provide a relatively accurate predictive tool for mine planning to determine if escarpment stability can be maintained while maximizing extraction of the coal reserves.

The Middle Mississippi River extends from the mouth of the Ohio River to the mouth of the Missouri River, a distance of about 310 kilometers (km) measured along the river. From its founding in 1764 to the first steamboat arrival in 1817, the City of St. Louis was little more than a trading post. However, with the advent of the shallow-draft steamboat, the Middle Mississippi River rapidly became a major thoroughfare of commerce. In this regard, its importance has been reflected by the development of port facilities at St. Louis and by Federal activity relating to channel maintenance and improvement. First Federal work on the Middle Mississippi River was autho¬rized by Congress in 1824. This work was for snag removal and bank clearing and was directed at reducing the hazards to steamboat traffic, particularly during low-flow periods. During the 1820's and early 1830's, the main channel threatened to move toward the Illinois shore and abandon the St. Louis port facilities. In 1836 and 1837, Congress authorized construction of permanent improvements to keep-the river next to St. Louis (Missouri shore). By 1880, it was recognized that bank clearing activities had resulted in a wider and shallower river which exacerbated navigation

"This paper discusses the effects of magnetic field and internal radiation on the melt flow and solidification morphology during solidification processing of oxide crystals for optoelectronic and remote sensing applications. The numerical solution of the integral differential equation characterizing the internal radiation and the magnetohydrodynamic equations describing the magnetic and transport phenomena is obtained by applying the combined discontinuous and continuous finite element method. The results show that both internal radiation and an externally applied magnetic field can have important effects on the melt flow and solidification behavior during the melt processing of oxide materials.IntroductionOptical single crystals are widely used in optical and electronic devices. These crystals are often grown from high temperature oxide melts under strictly controlled conditions. As in the well-known single crystal growth processes for semiconductor wafers, thermal gradient in the melt is a major contributing fuctor to the oxide melt pool. Unlike the semiconductor single crystal growth processes, however, the oxide melt is semitransparent and internal thermal radiation plays an important role in redistributing the thermal energy in the melt pool. Our recent experience with pilot-scale plant measurements also shows that the oxide melt is electrically conducting, although its electrical conductivity is considered much lower than the liquid metal or semiconductor melt.The fact that the oxide melt is absorbing and emitting in the thermal radiation frequency range makes it difficult to study the thermal energy transport in the melt pool. This is because thermal radiation is governed by a hyperbolic differential equation, which is different from those describing the transport processes in liquids. Also, our understanding of how thermal radiation interacts with other transport mechanisms such as convection and conduction is rather limited at point in time, in particular in high temperature oxide melts for optical single crystal processing."

"The use of recycled water in flotation has significant effects on flotation and selectivity because the recycled water contains many dissolved compounds and ions that alter the chemistry of the system. In this study, the effects of calcium, magnesium and sulfate, which are abundant components in recycled water, were investigated on galena, sphalerite and pyrite flotation using pure minerals and a complex sulfide ore by conducting bench-scale flotation, microflotation and zeta potential measurements. The bench-scale flotation tests indicated that higher recoveries of galena and sphalerite are obtained when water is recycled, due to higher concentrations of ions in recycled water. However, there was a critical ion concentration for galena recovery. The microflotation tests showed that galena recoveries at different pHs in recycled water are lower than in tap and distilled water. Pure sphalerite recoveries improved in recycled water in the bench-scale test with ore. Pure pyrite was depressed with recycled water as well. Zeta potentials became less negative with increased calcium and magnesium ion concentrations due to their adsorptions, and the presence of sulfate ions was seen to increase the negative charges of sphalerite and pyrite, conversely for galena. IntroductionWater is among the most important elements for mining and mineral processing. The distance to water sources is one of the major factors for mine site selection. The mining and mineral processing sector needs and consumes large quantities of water. In Chile in 2014, the copper mining sector alone consumed 12.7 m3/s fresh water for 1.189 tons of ore processing, and recycled 74 percent of the consumed water (Chilean Copper Commission, 2015). A plant that does not reuse or recycle any water will require 1.9 to 3.0 m3 of water per ton of ore processed (Gunson et al., 2012). Many stages of mineral processing, such as grinding, gravity concentration, dense medium separation, wet magnetic separation, flotation and hydrometallurgical operations, use large volumes of water (Schumann, Levay and Ametov, 2009).In mineral processing plants, the process water is recycled from the tailings dams, thickener overflows, and dewatering and filtration units. Wet concentration processes can require large quantities of water. Flotation, the most common process, typically takes place at 25 to 35 percent solids by mass. Most flotation plants practice at least some water reuse and recycled. Modern mines and mineral processing operations generally aim for zero water release (Levay, Smart and Skinner, 2001). In most cases, water quality has been found to affect flotation performance, and this interaction remains under investigation."

"The Ordos coal field is located in the northern midwestern part of China (Fig. 1). Since the mid- 1980s, it has been developed into one of the major coal fields in the world, producing approximately 833 Mt (918 million st) of raw coal in 2013. There were once more than 400 coal mines operating in the region. However, due to the combination of market conditions and implementation of government consolidation policies, the number of coal mines operating in recent years has been reduced considerably, with increasing output.The surface of the Ordos coal field is covered with loess and alluvium layers of varying thicknesses. In many areas, their combined thickness may amount to as much as 100 m (328 ft) underlain by thin bedrock. Many loess and alluvium are aquifers receiving water from rainfalls. There are also gullies of varying depths crossing the coal field. Figure 2 is a typical stratigraphic column highlighting the coal seams and roof and floor rocks of interest.In conjunction with the development of highproductivity coal mines, numerous ground control instrumentation tests have been conducted in the operating longwall panels. Analyses of the results of those tests offer the opportunity to understand the effect of wide-ranging mining and geological factors on the overburden movement. For this reason, trips were made to coal mines of interest to interview mine management and collect their unpublished internal research reports on ground control instrumentation. In addition, literature searches on published thesis/dissertations and papers in the professional journals were performed. Finally, data from a total of 95 fully mechanized longwall panels were collected. The instrumentation involved primarily the monitoring of hydraulic pressures of longwall shields, from which the first roof weighting and first roof caving interval and periodic roof weighting and periodic roof weighting interval were identified and determined. Some panels also included measurements of roofto- floor convergence at the face, roof strata bed separation, longwall face sloughage and the height of caving and fractured zones in the overburden. Those 95 panels were located in 20 coal mines (Fig. 1) congregated along both sides of the Wulunmulun River with the following mining and geological conditions. All together those 20 mines produced more than 224 Mt (246 million st) in 2013, accounting for approximately 27 percent of the total coal production in the Ordos coal field:1. Period of mining: 1991-2013.2. Mining methods: All panels employed the one slice, full-seam natural-caving longwall mining method like those practiced in the United States. All panels were developed with a twoentry system with a single-row of chain pillars measuring 20- x 20-m (65.6- x 98.4-ft) wide.3. Coal seams (Fig. 3): Coal in Ordos coal field is high-quality steam coal, that is very low in sulfur, potassium and ash, but high in Btu. Data were collected in panels mined in a total of 10 seams with 82 panels in four seams and the remaining 13 panels in six seams. The first six seams (1-2, 2-2, 3-1, 3-2, 4-2, 5-2) were mined by the Shenhua Coal Group (the world’s largest coal company) and the #4-2, 5-2, 6R, 62, and 62R seams were mined by both the Shenhua and Yitai Coal groups. In each coal group, the sequence of mining was in descending order. For example, in Shenhua Group, the top seam 1-2 was mined first, followed by the 2-2, 3-1, 3-2, and 4-2 seam in that descending order. In Fig. 3, the top-down sequence of coal seams is listed from left to right in each coal mine group. All seams were near horizontal with dip angles less than 3°."

Recent research on the development of erosion resistant coatings has been directed to the finite element modelling of the behavior of coating and substrate, and their interface under the impact of eroding particles. The approach presented in this paper is based on advanced computer simulation techniques using ABAQUS/Explicit to investigate stress and strain at the surface and at the coating/substrate interface of multilayer coatings under single particle impact. It was found previously that solid particle erosion mechanisms are predominantly governed by the kinetic energy of the impacting particles. However, recent modelling efforts revealed that effects of various material models could be also significant. Therefore, different material models representing relevant coating and substrate properties were investigated and the effects of these models on the coating/substrate response were studied. Particularly, differences between elastic, elastic-plastic and brittle cracking model responses were assessed.

Iron ore sinter quality depends heavily on the mineralogy, textures and physical structure of the sinter, which is formed upon solidification of the primary sinter melt. The interactions of the initial sinter melt with its surrounding materials will impact on the properties of the primary sinter melt and consequently the solidified structure of the sinter. By using a high-temperature visualisation system, in situ studies have been conducted on the effects of melt compositions (Al2O3, SiO2 and MgO) on the interfacial phenomena of the sinter melt on a natural iron ore substrate. It was found that the melt composition significantly influenced the wettability between the sinter melt and the iron ore substrate. The interactions between the sinter melt and the natural iron ore substrate were also examined. Such interactions can lead to further changes of sinter melt composition and hence the sinter melt properties that, in turn, further affect the wetting behaviour of the sinter melt.CITATION:Ma, M P, Lu, L, Hapugoda, S and Manuel, J R, 2013. An effective technique to minimize miners? respirable dust and diesel exposure on mobile mining equipment is to place mine operators in enclosed cabs with designed filtration and pressurization systems. Many factors affect the performance of these enclosed cab systems, and one of the most significant factors is the effectiveness of the filtration system. High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA)-type filters are typically used because they are highly efficient at capturing all types and sizes of particles, including those in the submicron range such as diesel particulate matter (DPM). However, in laboratory tests, minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) 16 filters have proven to be highly efficient for capturing DPM and respirable dust. Also, MERV 16 filters can be less restrictive to cab airflow and less expensive than HEPA filters. To verify their effectiveness in the field, MERV 16 filters were used in the enclosed cab filtration system on a face drill and roof bolting mining machine and tested at an underground limestone mine. Test results showed that DPM and respirable dust concentrations were reduced by more than 90% when the cabs were properly sealed. However, when the cab door was opened periodically throughout the shift, the reduction efficiency of the MERV 16 filters was reduced to 80% on average.

"6xxx-series Al alloys are the most commonly used alloys in the automotive industry as they have an appropriate balance of strength, corrosion resistance and formability. The main strengthening phase in these alloys is the ß’-Mg2Si precipitates. One opportunity to achieve stronger 6xxx-series Al alloys, without affecting corrosion and formability, is the use of Sc. The main challenge of using Sc in 6xxx-series lies in the heat treatment, which must be designed to allow for a fine precipitation of both Al3Sc and ß’-Mg2Si. In this work, two model alloys are used, an Al-Sc-Zr and an Al-Mg-Si-Cu-Sc-Zr, to explore the impact of the 6xxx-series key elements (Mg, Si and Cu) on the Al3Sc precipitates. Transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography are used to investigate the precipitates present in the microstructure after casting. We find that higher Si content results in the formation of dispersoids upon casting. The average composition of these dispersoids is (Al0.8,Si0.2)3 (Sc0.888,Zr0.024,Mg0.08,Cu0.008). A closer look at the solid solution reveals that most of the Sc and Zr is supersaturated after casting even in the presence of Mg, Si and Cu. We discuss the impact of these results on the design of a suitable heat treatment for 6xxx-series alloys with Sc.INTRODUCTION The most common strategy to strengthen aluminum (Al) alloys is by micro-alloying to form a fine distribution of precipitates (Gladman, 1999). Whilst precipitates enhance the strength, this is often done to the detriment of ductility and corrosion performance (Davis, 1999). The 6xxx-series Al alloys are heavily used in the automotive industry as they offer an appropriate balance of strength, ductility and corrosion resistance (W. S. Miller et al., 2000). The strength increment in these alloys comes from the formation of the ß’–Mg2Si and the quaternary Q’ phase (Chakrabarti & Laughlin, 2004; Polmear, St. John, Nie, & Qian, 2017). One opportunity to achieve stronger 6xxx-series alloys, whilst keeping good balance of corrosion resistance and formability, is the use of small additions of scandium (Sc). Sc is one of the most potent strengtheners in Al alloys (Dorin, Ramajayam, Vahid, & Langan, 2018; Røyset & Ryum, 2005). Most of the strengthening benefits from Sc come from the formation of fine Al3Sc dispersoids. The following strengthening mechanisms apply to Sc: 1) Solid solution strengthening, 2) precipitation hardening, 3) inhibiting recrystallization, 4) assisting nucleation of other strengthening phases (Dorin, Ramajayam, Lamb, & Langan, 2017). As compared to other dispersoid phases, Al3Sc dispersoids have good electrochemical compatibility with Al alloys and hence do not affect their corrosion resistance (Cavanaugh, Birbilis, Buchheit, & Bovard, 2007). The coarsening resistance of Al3Sc is often improved by adding zirconium (Zr), as it forms a Zr rich shell around Al3Sc which prevents Sc from moving across the interface."

The reaction of O2 with the carbon anode is considered as the main parasitic chemical reaction affecting Hall-Heroult process anodes. The current study aims at investigating the influence of the microstructure of baked anode on its overconsumption. Samples were removed from different positions of an industrial anode. Density, porosity, Lc and BET specific surface area were measured. The anode reactivity was evaluated based on the weight losses for the samples resulting from the reaction of anode with air at 550°C after 7h. The essential parameters determined to control the air reactivity are closed porosity, Lc and pores with a pore entrance radius of 1.5, 8.5 and 12 p.m. The knowledge of effects of these parameters allows better understanding of the reactivity of anodes and consequently reduction of their overconsumption in electrolysis bath.

In the irradiation of ore particles by microwave energy preferential absorption of this energy occurs in minerals having specific dielectric properties (Bradshaw, 1999). This leads to a selective heating of the various components of within the ore particle matrix. The result is a differential thermal expansion of such components and the resulting induced stresses become ideally concentrated at mineral grain boundaries (Kingman et al., 2000). Dependent upon the relative composition of absorbent, opaque and reflective components this may lead to enhancement of the inter-granular fracture of the ore particles in the initial comminution process (Fandrich et al., 1997). The potential is thus a greater proportion of free mineral grain within the fractured ore particle that may lead to improvement in subsequent mineral separation processes. As the composition of the ore dictates the result of such a treatment (Kingman et al., 2000) it is essential to evaluate the response of each ore sample on an individual basis. This paper reports on results obtained from two ore samples: the one being the zinc ore from the Black Mountain mine (South Africa) and the other a pre-concentrated sample of handpicked cobalt?copper mixed oxide ore from the Gecamines (DRC). The equipment and methods used to simulate the comminution of the samples and evaluate the level of the value liberation will be described along with the results obtained. Using King (1975), Kanellopoulous and Ball (1975), and Gungor and Atalay (1998), a comparison between the behaviour upon microwave irradiation of sulphide and mixed oxide ores leads to conclude that while the technique (i.e. microwave irradiation) is appropriate to the zinc sulphide ore, it does not seem to lead to exceptional results for the oxide.

The iron ore from Yichang in China assaying 41.64% Fe and 1.02% P is a low grade and high phosphorus oolitic hematite ore. The separation of iron minerals from gangue minerals in the ore by conventional processing techniques is ineffective owing to their close similar properties. The modification of iron minerals by microwave-assisted reduction was investigated in order to improve separability of the ore. The effects of microwave-assisted reduction on the subsequent low intensity magnetic separation and floatation were examined. The results show that the main factors affecting the reduction and separation process are grinding size, reduction temperature and reductant. Fine grinding of the microwave-treated ore to smaller than 0.074mm was found to be imperative due to the tiny dissemination characteristics of iron oxide minerals. After magnetizing reduction by microwave heating at 500?, the magnetic concentrate containing 58.36% Fe and 0.67% P can be obtained with the Fe recovery of 91.28%. Magnetizing reduction drops the floatability of iron oxide minerals, thus reverse flotation is fit for upgrading the magnetic concentrate to contain 62.13% Fe and 0.21% P with Fe recovery of 81.59%. Compared with present microwave-assisted reduction technique of carbon reductant, using a waste iron powder as reductant is a novel and effective technique without the green house effect caused by the release of CO and CO2. Waste iron powder with a faster response to microwave heating then coke and charcoal can be recovered by magnetic separation in a low cost and plays the role of reductant and microwave heating accelerator.

Blast resistant structural design continues to be a research area of major concern for governments around the world due to explosive threats from both state and non-state actors. Glass and aluminum curtain wall systems are commonly used to clad the exterior of government and commercial structures, allowing light into the building, regulating the interior environment, and providing an aesthetically pleasing exterior. These systems are likely to fail when exposed to sudden, high-pressure events such as the purposeful or accidental detonation of explosives. Engineers have designed blast resistant curtain walls and structural elements to reduce the likelihood and severity of failure, but the design tools and testing mechanisms commonly used in the process may not accurately model or simulate actual blast conditions at all ranges. In blast resistant structural design, the origin of a shock wave is typically assumed to be in the far-field, creating a wave that is nearly planar and parallel to at least one face of the target. Shock is applied evenly and immediately across the entire impacted surface. However, the source of real-life blasts is often very close to the target structure, and the assumption of far-field planar shock does not always apply. Mid-field blasts exhibit qualities different from those assumed about far-field shocks, specifically a hemispherical shock that produces different peak pressures, impulse curves, oblique reflections, and Mach stems across a target. This paper will examine mid-field shock effects from scaled distances of 2.5 to 4 13 (6.3 to 10.1 13) on a tall, scaled target by measuring reflected and incident pressure, impulse, and shock velocity across the target. Results will be compared to theoretical blast parameter equations and empirical data used by the industry. Possible effects of mid-field blasts on structures and further research ideas will be suggested.

In this study, the effects of milling time, chemical composition and heat treatment on microstructure and magnetic properties of nanocrystalline Fe-Si (6.5-25 at.% Si) alloys prepared by mechanical alloying have been investigated. The results show that increasing the milling time or the Si content, decreases the lattice parameter and increases the internal microstrain. The prepared powders mainly consist of micron-sized particles with an average grain size of less than 20 nm. The specific saturation magnetization values are slightly less than those of single crystal or conventional Fe-Si alloys and decrease as Si content increases. The coercive force values of the nanocrystalline as-milled powders are much higher than those of corresponding Fe-Si bulk alloys with a minimum at 13.5 at.% Si. The values of coercive force decreased after annealing but it seams that the residual strain developed during milling is not the major contributing factor to the higher values of coercive force in the mechanically alloyed powders and nanocrystals behave as single-domain particles without exchange interaction between them.

"Since 2008, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has required the installation of refuge alternatives (RAs) in underground coal mines (MSHA, 2008). MSHA requires that RAs provide an environment with breathable air for entrapped miners for a 96-hour period. Heat buildup inside an occupied RA is a serious concern. Without a means to dissipate the heat and humidity generated by the occupants and the carbon dioxide scrubbing system, the temperature and humidity inside RAs could lead to severe discomfort or heat stress depending on the mine ambient temperature before and during occupation of the RA. In its 2006 report, the West Virginia Mine Safety Technology Task Force (2006) recommended an apparent temperature limit of 35 °C (95 °F) for RAs. In Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations Part 7.504, or 30 CFR 7.504, MSHA specifies a maximum apparent temperature of 35 °C (95 °F) inside an occupied RA (MSHA, 2016). The apparent temperature is calculated using both air temperature and relative humidity (Steadman, 1979).Calculations can be used to deter-mine if the air within an occupied RA will reach the apparent temperature limit. In these calculations, the mine temperature could be assumed to re-main constant. With this assumption, the effects of the mine strata thermal mass and thermal conductivity on the heat buildup in an RA are ignored. Thus, calculations performed with the assumption that the mine temperature is constant would underpredict the resulting dry-bulb temperature and apparent temperature for a given RA occupancy. The mine air temperature has been used as the basis for RA temperature calculations. However, there has been no research to confirm that the mine air temperature is the appropriate basis."

Drilling slurry has become an effective aid to the construction of drilled shafts in caving and/or waterbearing soils. Historically, drilling slurry made of bentonitic clay and water was first used in the US in water well drilling as early as 1889. In coastal Texas drilled shaft contractors began using slurry, often made of on-site clay mixed with potable water, in the years following World War II, on a relatively routine basis. This type of slurry was used to "process" boreholes, in which the borehole was drilled "in the dry" until water or unstable soil was encountered, after which water and on-site clay were introduced into the borehole and mixed in place with the auger or other drilling tool. Drilling then continued under a slurry consisting of the uncontrolled mixture of clay and water until the excavation had reached a relatively impermeable and cohesive material. At this point, a steel casing was dropped into the hole and sealed into the lower stratum of impermeable geomaterial (soil or rock). The slurry inside the casing was bailed or pumped out, drilling continued to plan depth in the dry, a reinforcing cage was set in the partially cased borehole, concrete was placed and the casing was withdrawn. Some soil-slurry was undoubtedly trapped between the casing and the borehole wall, but the quality of that slurry was usually of no concern, because engineers of the period usually viewed drilled shafts as nothing more than deeply buried footings. Any unejected slurry would only serve to lower side shearing resistance, not yet considered in design, but would have no effect on end bearing. Grain sticking often occurs in the fluidized bed reduction of f ine iron ore, which is closely related to the precipitation morphology of metallic iron on the surface of ore particles. In this work, simulating the gas-solid reduction process of iron ore, in situ observations were carried out to investigate effects of doping mineral oxides on the precipitation morphology evolution of metallic iron during reduction of iron oxides with CO. Results indicate that the precipitation morphology of metallic iron is related to the quantity of doped mineral oxides. The minimum mole fraction of doped oxide ( xyOA N ) that can inhibit the growth of iron whiskers is related to its cation radius ( Ax r ), extranuclear electronic layers ( Ax n ) and valence electrons ( Ax q ). The German hard coal production predominantly derives from underground multiseam mining activities. Beside common surface damages, ?inner mine damages? on underground infrastructures (i.e. main roads, cross cuts and shafts) due to mining excavations occur to an increasing extent. As these "inner mine damages" dramatically increased because of the development towards high performance longwall mining technologies, this matter raised to be a severe problem concerning mining economics. To protect durable and long lasting underground infrastructures, precautionary measures such as suitable mine layouts, adapted planning of mining operations and moderate face advances have to be considered. Some examples of "inner mine damages" recorded by means of mine surveying methods are given in this paper. An empirical-mathematical model based on the principles of mining subsidence engineering methods will be introduced. This model allows to minimize ?inner mine damages? and helps to support and optimize mining processes.
