Advances in inexpensive computer automation led to the development and utilization of a computerized ore control system at Cyprus Coppers tone Gold Mine near Parker, Arizona. These new ore control practices improved accuracy, performance, and productivity of the ore control effort. An automated system for data collection, including bar coding of blast hole samples, laboratory analysis, data management, grade estimation, cut delineation, and ore zone stakeout, plays a major role in ore control practices. This is of particular interest because of the large amount of blast hole information being processed, analyzed, and reported daily.

Modern computers and software provide powerful tools for the geologist to construct reliable models of geological resources, and the mining engineer to produce accurate and workable mine plans. Over the years many people have developed a phobia of computers, especially for geological analysis, modelling and mine planning. This phobia is often caused by a lack of knowledge, poor training or a bad experience. The adoption however of computers for geological modelling and mine planning is now becoming mainstream. With the correct training, a good understanding of input data, and detailed knowledge of the required results, the phobia can safely be overcome to provide mining operations with increased productivity.

The excavation of a coal mine or any other mine, tunnel, or quarry, below the water table establishes a void towards which ground- water will flow. Inflows into the mine, if significant, can cause not only problems such as flooding, and/or muddy floors, in the mine, but commonly also require disposal of poor quality groundwater. The flow of groundwater towards a mine is accompanied by a decline in groundwater levels, which may extend up to several kilo- metres around the mine. This may seriously effect vegetation, stream flow and existing users of groundwater. At the pit face groundwater gradients can also cause slope stability problems and where a water table is intersected, increase blasting costs.

There are many opportunities for computers to assist in dragline mine planning. Three important areas particularly lend themselves to computer assisted study. These are overall mine design and planning, the computation and display of range diagrams and the calculation of production and production variability. The computation of range diagrams is of particular interest because of the importance of matching the dragline and site geometries. This paper examines the uses of range diagrams in dragline mining and illustrates the application of computer techniques to the computation using one such program as an example. The use of computer generated range diagrams for machine selection, pit design and in parameter analysis is discussed. Directions for further development are also provided. There is a great deal that can be done to additionally enhance the ability to provide accurate designs for the dragline operation. One area that needs special attention is the dumping of overburden around access ramps into the pit. This situation is one of the most difficult dumping sequences and affects machine selection and pit operation. It is also suggested that programs that simulate the production schedule of the drag-line would be useful. It is concluded that large overall mine planning programs are very important in dragline mining. However, smaller programs designed for a specific, task are also important tools in many cases. These are easy to learn and use, well adapted to the PC environment and provide useful information, both for design and for daily planning.

What does the information age mean to mining companies? The perception of greatly increased access to information is based on modern communications through ‘smart’ fax machines and computer networks. Computer media allow us to `talk' to the President or to a sister in Australia. If we need data to help put together a mining permit, we can find that data somewhere on computer media. The vast amount of easily accessible information quickly overwhelms us. To avoid `information burnout,' we must learn to target searches and be able to discriminate between dross and information that is useful to our goals. If you watch commercial TV, you have learned to screen out most product commercials. A similar screening process must be applied to computerized information sources. You may need to sort through a lot of irrelevant information before finding the pearls you are looking for. ‘Smart’ fax machines can send information with no direct human intervention. MINES FaxBac, for example, from the US Bureau of Mines instructs you to enter four-digit numbers to have particular reports sent directly to your fax machine. Software vendors use a similar system to supply information about their products. You select an item by number, and the related brochure is faxed to your machine. To compete, the industry must maintain access to as many information sources as possible. The availability of computers and software for almost every conceivable application allows us to accomplish work faster than we ever thought possible, even as recently as 10 years ago. Most mining companies have become aware that doing geology, reserves, mine planning and other technical tasks completely by hand is much too slow. The world moves faster, drilling happens faster, mining happens faster, all related activities happen faster. We no longer have the manpower or time to keep all maps. calculations and records up to date.

This portion of the circulating load in no way is to be blamed on the characteristics of the classifier and is all composed of oversize. Consider, for illustration, that this portion of the circulating load is handled in the A division of the classifier, assuming that the classifier is divided longitudinally into two divisions by an imaginary line. Because the classifier does not usually make a perfect separation of the undersize, a certain portion of the total circulating load is to be directly blamed on the efficiency of the classifier. Let this portion of the circulating load be considered as being handled in the B division of the classifier. Now if the classifier is operating perfectly (100 per cent efficient), the width due to the B division becomes zero and correspondingly the efficiency of the classifier diminishes as B becomes wider in proportion to A. "Magnetic fields have many actual applications in the metals processing industry. Externally applied magnetic fields give rise to electromagnetic (Lorentz) forces formed by the cross product JxB, between the induced current density J and the magnetic field density B. When the metal is in liquid form, the Lorentz force generates motion in the fluid which in applications of practical interest becomes turbulent. In modelling terms, the Lorentz force appears as a source in the momentum equations. In addition, the induced current generates heat (Joule heating) in the metal that is in proportion to J2, with a corresponding source of heat in the energy equation. Whether as heat or as a force, these effects represent action at a distance - a most useful attribute when dealing with hot metal. The Lorentz force is used to stir solidifying alloys, pump liquid metal in conduits, dampen the flow in the meniscus of a continuous caster, levitate metal drops, induce artificial gravity conditions in suspensions or contain liquid metal. Elsewhere, the Lorentz force may be a by-product of some other operation, so leading to wave excitation in aluminium electrolysis cells, or altering the shape of the weld pool in arc welding. Joule heating is most commonly used with applied AC fields, to melt metal in induction furnaces.The author and his colleagues have been involved in the modelling of most of these processes in the past decade. Modelling is not however straightforward, since most of the examples mentioned represent genuine multi-physics challenges. There is a strong coupling between the flow field and electromagnetic field. The addition of a dynamically varying metal free surface and the moving solidus front means the flow, heat and electromagnetic fields need to be computed simultaneously. In situations involving metal containment, the metal free surface position is governed by the interplay of gravity, Lorentz force, surface tension and fluid inertia. Since all the interesting effects often happen in thin boundary layers at the surface due to the skin effect, mesh generation and mesh control during the computation become non trivial problems that need to be addressed. This paper presents a review of numerical methods used to model droplet levitation, semi-levitation melting and cold crucible induction melting of metals. The first method is based on spectral collocation techniques and the second is the traditional FV approach. Steps taken to validate the computations and typical transient results are also given."

The geostatistical technique of conditional simulation is applied to measure the uncertainty in factor of safety predictions for soil slopes where there is incomplete knowledge of the spatial distribution of soil properties. A case study considers a natural clay slope in Canada. The sequential indicator simulation technique is used as a means for generating a series of spatial maps of soil properties for this site. These maps approximate random draws from the conditional probability density function that characterizes existing uncertainty in the spatial distribution. Factor of safety determinations are then made for each simulated map using the simplified-Janbu approach, where the computations are performed with a new computer program that can operate on irregular spatial profiles of soil properties specified on a discrete grid. A unique capability of this approach is the ability to generate the distribution of factor of safety conditional to the type, position, and value of existing site characterization measurements. This capability should reduce uncertainty in FS predictions.

This paper presents a technique for imaging the extent of solidification of molten metal flowing in a cooled pipe based on the concept of eddy currents. A 3D mathematical model, which relates the geometry of solidification to the scattered field induced in a solenoid external to the pipe, is derived. The model is described by a set of integral equations which are solved numerically using the moments method. An iterative algorithm is developed to reconstruct the solidification distribution image. Experimental measurements have shown that the eddy current technique is sufficiently sensitive for practical purposes.

Foram fabricados compósitos de matriz de cobre, reforçados com grafeno a partir da mistura de uma dispersão de óxido de grafeno com pó de cobre eletrolítico. A dispersão foi produzida pelo método de Hummers modificado e caracterizada por espectroscopia Raman e difração de raios X. Os compósitos foram fabricados pelo processo de metalurgia do pó convencional. Os pós de compósitos foram caracterizados por microscopia eletrônica de varredura, os corpos de prova consolidados foram avaliados quanto a densificação a verde e do corpo sinterizado, e os corpos sinterizados foram submetidos a ensaio de compressão a fim de verificar a resistência dos compósitos.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi desenvolver um compósito permeável formado por uma matriz de polipropileno reforçada com resíduos de construção e demolição (RCD). Inicialmente foi feita a limpeza, peneiramento e caracterização do RCD. O compósito foi conformado na forma de placas pelo processo de compressão a quente. O RCD foi misturado com os grânulos do polímero e a mistura disposta em um molde que foi fechado e comprimido com carga de 1 ton e mantido na temperatura de 210oC por 10 min. Foram conformadas placas permeáveis e impermeáveis variando-se o percentual dos constituintes e granulometria do RCD. Para a caracterização foram realizados ensaios de permeabilidade e flexão em três pontos. As placas permeáveis apresentaram elevado grau de permeabilidade, muito superior aos requisitos mínimos para concreto. Foi constatado que a distribuição granulométrica tem influência na resistência mecânica e permeabilidade do compósito. O aumento do teor de granulados finos promoveu aumento nas propriedades mecânicas em flexão sem perda da permeabilidade. Com a impermeabilização das placas e consequente redução de vazios as propriedades mecânicas em flexão praticamente triplicaram. Analisando os resultados de uma forma geral pode-se concluir que há margem para melhorar o desempenho mecânico do compósito sem perda da permeabilidade.

El presente texto describe la aplicación de los métodos más simples de concentración en los minerales oxidados de plata en la mina Uchuccahua. Los métodos se basan en las propiedades físicas y superficiales de los minerales oxidados. Para ello, se realizan análisis químicos, granulométricos, mineragráficos a través del microscopio de barrido y fluorescencia de rayos x. Una vez obtenido dichos resultados, se diseña un tratamiento para el proceso de concentración, donde se da la flotación de los escasos sulfuros y pasivados, así como la flotación de óxidos mediante la técnica de sulfurización y lixiviación para la recuperacíón de valores en plata.

Dado que la concentración de sulfuros de fierro: pirita y pirrotita aplicados gravimétricamente en espirales Humphreys obtuvo resultados óptimos tanto en lo económico como en lo metalúrgico, surge la necesidad de construir una planta concentradora de sulfuros de hierro en la Cerro de Pasco Corporation utilizando como cabeza los relaves de la planta de flotación de minerales de cobre. En este sentido, el objetivo del texto describe el proceso de dicha concentración, donde señala que la alimentación a la nueva planta es una pulpa que requiere mantenimiento de supervisión y mantenimiento, generando un concentrado de fierro a un costo de s/.6. 00 T. C. S. contra s/. 105. 00 T. C. S.; costo del concentrado de fierro producido por flotación en 1961. Asimismo, las diferencias de gravedad específica entre sulfuros de fierro y ganga cuarcífera han ido aprovechados para lograr un ejemplo donde la concentración gravimétrica, actúa con éxito frente al actualmente difundido proceso de concentración por flotación.

Concentradora "Dana Aida" (100 t/d capacity) was built in 1971-1972 to treat dumps and ores containing mixed oxide-sulfide copper-gold-silver minerals from two veins. The veins, Don Felipe and aria are about 150 m apart, but are distinctly different mineralogically. The deposit is near San Juan de Guadalupe, Durango. Mexico. All new process equipment was manufactured locally, in or near Torreon, Coahuila. Sampling, ore testing, flowsheet design, plant design, drawings purchasing, financing, etc. was planned and directed by two engineers. Construction was executed by local miners and common labor (largely agricultural). The paper presents detailed costs for equipment and construction. The subsequent breaking-in operation is discussed.

El presente texto refiere el proceso historiográfico de la planta concentradora Mahr Túnel ubicada en el valle del río Yauli a 3.4 kilómetros de las coordenadas de la carretera central del Perú. La planta se construyó en 1937 para el tratamiento de los minerales de plomo, cobre, zinc de la mina San Cristóbal. La operación de la planta comprende: recibo del mineral, planta de chancado, circuito de molienda, flotación Bulk cobre- plomo, flotación de zinc, espesamiento y flitrado, disposición de relaves. Los datos estadísticos de la planta se basaron en la capacidad, número de obreros, número de empleados, fuerza eléctrica, consumo de barras y bolas y consumo de reactivos. La seguridad y higiene de la planta concentradora mencionada cuenta con un Comité de seguridad conformado por un Superintendente de campo, ingeniero de Seguridad y el médico de campamento, así como para casos de accidentes es suministrado por el Hospital de Mahr Túnel.

En 1959, la concentradora Toquepala inicia sus operaciones con una capacidad limitada de 38,500 toneladas de mineral por día. En ese sentido, se inició un programa de investigación para modernizar y optimizar las operaciones de la concentradora en el futuro. Entre los logros obtenidos a partir de dicho programa están: la reducción del consumo de energía en el proceso de flotación de la planta de cobre, como del consumo de Asmol en la planta de moliddenita, así como se la reducción en el consumo de reactivos. En consecuencia, el presente trabajo señala la evaluación metalúrgica de la operación de la concentadora de Toquepala a futuro y los resultados de la aplicación del programa.

"Dewatering of nickel concentrate at the INCO Thompson integrated mine-metallurgical site takes place within the smelter plant. The eight original 60 foot diameter cable torque thickeners of which four were operational and eight Dorrco internal drum filters have been replaced with a single Outokumpu high rate thickener and a single Lasta pressure filter. The modernization has resulted in a filter cake which has a more stable and lower moisture content. Control of the entire dewatering process has been improved and costs have been reduced.Typical filter cake produced from the Dorrco filters during processing of high tonnages of Birchtree mine ore was ~20% moisture vs. ~13% moisture for concentrate produced from the Thompson mine ore. The high moistures were correlated with the amount of fine magnesium silicate gangue in the concentrate. As Birchtree ore processing rates have increased, this filter cake moisture became unacceptable because of material handling problems and the impact on furnace metallurgy. The Dorrco filters were replaced with the Lasta filter in 2003 that has consistently produced filter cake at ~11% moisture.This paper summarizes the piloting, design, installation and commissioning of the modernized dewatering circuit.INTRODUCTIONThe Thompson integrated nickel processing facility was built in 1958 and originally consisted of a mine-mill-smelter and, soon after, a refinery.Nickel concentrate is pumped from the mill as a dilute slurry directly to the smelter facility ~200 meters along an unheated pipe trestle. Originally, nickel concentrate was de-watered using up to 8 conventional 60-foot diameter thickeners and 8 internal vacuum drum filters."

"For its end of life, Kemess Mine processed its difficult-to-treat hypogene ore from the east pit, which is a lower grade copper and higher pyrite content gold ore. Metallurgical testwork showed that improvement was possible with finer grinding. In July 2010, small grinding media were introduced into the regrind mill resulting to a nearly 50% decrease of the power draw with a finer grind, an increase of 1.1% in the final copper grade, an increase of 1.2% in copper and 2.9% in gold recoveries at the cleaners. The overall recoveries of copper and gold increased by 0.6% and 1.3% respectively.INTRODUCTION Kemess Mine was located at 430 km North West of Prince George in North Central British Colombia. Its production started in May 1998 by Royal Oak Mines and was acquired by Northgate Exploration in 2000. Kemess reached its end of life production with its last of production on March 9th, 2011. The concentrator nominal capacity was 56,000 TPD consisting of a primary gyratory crusher feeding two identical conventional SAB circuits totalizing 35,840 kW available for grinding. Rougher flotation consists of four parallel rows of eight 130 m³ tank cells to produce a concentrate of 2% Cu and 6 gr/t Au which was pumped to a 5 m x 10.8 m regrind ball mill. The regrind installed power was 4,480 kW to generate a final grind of 80% passing 40 microns. This product fed the two stage cleaner flotation circuit, first stage being two parallel rows conventional 17 m³ Denver cells and second stage, two 3.3 m x 11.0 m flotation columns in series, designed and constructed by Kemess, to produce a 22% copper concentrate grade. The cleaner flotation middlings were returned back to the regrind mill (Froehling, Mohns, Roman & Grady, 2005; Froehling, Mohns, Rajwani & Fullam, 2007). The large copper-gold porphyry deposit was composed of 15% of oxidized supergene and leach cap ore and 85% of hypogene ore having three major alteration zones, mainly characterized by their sulphur/sulphide content. Chalcopyrite is the main copper mineral species with minor bornite. Gold was mainly present as free gold or electrum. The first alteration zone consisted of a phyllic alteration characterized by moderate and intense sericite alteration which had the highest mill throughput and twice the mine grade when in contact with the supergene horizon. The second zone consisted of a potassic alteration characterized by more competent groundmass and moderate to intense quartz stockwork which had a slightly lower mill throughput. Finally, a third alteration found beneath and on the east side of the deposit having almost no quartz stockwork and hardened groundmass, sulphide content is two to four times more. This zone had the lower mill throughput with significant drop in the mine average gold and copper grade. Through its mine life, the average life of mine copper head grade was 0.21% Cu and 0.64 gr/t Au. Head grades began to decrease from 2008 to be substantially lower in 2011 as shown in Table 1."

Noranda's Altonorte custom smelter, located in the 2nd region of Chile, 20 kilometres southeast of the city of Antofagasta, started operations in 1993. Presently, 1150 tonnes per day of new feed are smelted with an 85% sulphur capture. An oxy-fuel reverberatory furnace produces a 48%-55% copper matte that is treated in 13 ft. x 36 ft. (3..96m x 10.97m) Peirce-Smith converters (two hot and one blowing). Up to thirty percent of the new concentrate is smelted via dry concentrate injection into the converters. This paper reviews the development of the concentrate drying and injection system, and oxygen enrichment at Altonorte from start-up in 1995 to the present time. The relationship between oxygen enrichment and concentrate injection is reviewed from a theoretical and practical standpoint. Concentrate injection has improved the smelter's productivity and added flexibility to the operations. Due to the relatively high matte grades and the subsequent short converting times, maintaining consistent operations was difficult at times and the smelter has gone through a learning curve. Plant operating results and experiences are presented on the impact of concentrate injection in relation to: feed treatment, blowing times, revert generation, slag quality and refractory wear.
