Two Arvedi ESP plants going into operation in 2015 will allow a Chinese steel producer to better serve the extremely attractive local and export markets for high-quality, thin-gauge strip products. The energy consumption and the related costs are reduced by up to 45% compared to conventional casting and rolling processes. This also means a major reduction in CO2 emissions. The new plants are designed for an annual production capacity of 2 x 2.55 million tons of high-quality, ultra-thin, hot-rolled strip products with widths of up to 1,600 mm and thicknesses down to 0.8 mm. The project scope also features a comprehensive training and assistance package for plant start-up and operations by personnel from the existing ESP plant at Acciaieria Arvedi SpA, Italy. The plant setup, the trainings and assistance program as well as latest results from the ESP plant in Italy will be presented. While this project is under execution three further ESP lines have been ordered by the same customer summing up now to five ESP lines at the same location.

The combined 79th Annual Minnesota Section of SME Meeting and 67th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium was held April 11 and 12, 2006, in Duluth, MN. About 300 mining professionals attended, including engineers, executives, mining managers and suppliers, from throughout the United States and Canada. This year’s theme was “Success in the New World of Mining.” The SME Minnesota Section meeting included a keynote session, a special projects update, a general managers update and technical paper presentations. The University of Minnesota Mining Symposium program featured a panel discussion on Minnesota’s relationship with China. The combined meeting included a trade-show consisting of 64 booth spaces. Tradeshow demand exceeded expectations, and an additional 10 booth spaces were added in the registration lobby. Also included were an SME short course on pump basics and social events.

It is difficult to overstate the importance of China to the future of the world mining and metals industries. In a remarkably short time, China has risen to become the world?s largest producer and consumer of steel and its second largest consumer of non-ferrous metals such as copper and aluminium. It is currently the world?s largest buyer of copper on international markets, the second largest buyer of iron ore, and the third largest buyer of alumina. At the same time, it is the world?s largest or second largest producer and exporter of tin, lead, zinc, magnesium and a host of minor metals and industrial minerals, as well as a fast-growing exporter of coal.

"With seven new applications for plans of work for exploration in the international Seabed Area approved by the Council during its twentieth session of the International Seabed Authority, 26 total approvals have been made by the Council up to date. Among them, three contracts were made with COMRA. On 8 August 2014, China Minmetals Corporation submitted another application to the Authority for approval of a plan of work for exploration for polymetallic nodules in the Area, which is also sponsored by the Government of the People’s Republic of China.China is one of the main contributors to the international seabed regime. The Presentation will describe China’s activities in the Area, such as exploration, technology development, environmental protection and policy making.JIAOLONG is a submersible with capacity of 7000 meters. JIAOLONG’s sea trials were carefully made in 4 years, from 2009 through 2012 and it successfully dove to a depth of 7062m in June 2012 at Mariana trench. A so called "Test Application Phase" started thereafter, and is planned to last for 3-4 years. Two cruises and 4 legs have already been made since then. A wide-range of findings were obtained during dives in South China Sea, and in COMRA’s Exploration Contract Areas for polymetallic nodules and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts. This presentation will reveal the colorful findings."

Under the seventh 5-year plan (1986-90), the Chinese Government continued to implement reform and to open the country further to the outside world in order to accelerate the growth of its national economy. As a result of expanded foreign economic exchanges and domestic achievements in education, science and technology, and cultural and public health undertakings, the national economy was strengthened. In 1988, there was impressive growth in the Chinese economy. The gross national product (GNP) grew by 11.2070 reaching $373.4 billion; 2 the national income grew by 11.4070 to $310.9 billion. The major problem in the Chinese economy was the imbalance between high demand and insufficient supply. Chronic shortages resulted in price increases and high inflation, which averaged 19% for China as a whole and about 30% in urban areas. Macroeconomic stability took precedence over market-oriented reform initiative. Because of rapidly growing inflation, the Government re-imposed price controls and rationing in major cities in the fall of 1988. China continued to be a major world producer of minerals, metals, and fuels. Output of the principal commodities continued to rise. The largest in-crease in production was salt which rose 24% in output in 1988; followed by sulfuric acid, 14%; cement, 12%; soda ash, 9%; caustic soda, 7%; and steel, 6%. For fossil fuels, the increase in output of natural gas was 14% in 1988; followed by coal, 3%; and crude oil, 2%. The output of electricity by thermal-fired powerplants rose by 9% while that for hydroelectric power-plants rose 7%. Although China's overall energy output has increased annually since 1980, the growth in demand continued to outstrip the supply.

The reconstruction of the world after the present war must inevitably be profoundly influenced by the rise and progress of New China.The principle of Chinese mathrity has been admitted by Great Britain and the United States by their abjuration of extra-territorial tights, and by the withdrawal of the Maritime Customs Administration. The United States admits equality by her declaration that Chinese are eligible for American citizenship, and the reaction to this will be swift enmity to such peoples as may impose humiliating restrictions upon Chinese citizens.Finally, the decisions of the Moscow Conference and the recent meeting of National leaders in Cairo give partnership rights to this new State in post-war reconstruction, and open the way for a rapid realization of her destiny.It seems certain that China, if so she wills, can become, within a generation or so, one of the considerable forces of the world. The toad she wiII follow will be lighted by her own inherent and intrinsic genius. Her speed of progress can no longer be forcibly influenced by other nations and the attitude towards her of somewhat contemptuous patronage hitherto adopted by the European communities bordering the Pacific Ocean must be radically modified.It is doubtful whether the European will ever reach full understanding of Chinese mentality. The Chinese "way of life" since the dawn of her civilization has been totally divergent from that of the European, but the enormous potential strength, due to the simplicity of their requirements and their steadfast industry, is a function of that "way of life." On the other hand the trend of reorganization must obviously be towards Western standards; and a wide knowledge of the potential strength of the Chinese is possible and will be essential in our post-war world. The following, necessarily inadequate, notes are therefore offered, as an indication of the obstacles to be overcome and the capacity of the Chinese executives and operatives to overcome them.For 'thirteen centuries the political and social structure of China proper (ie, excluding Mongolia, Manchuria and Tibet) has been rigidly shaped by the philosophy of Lao Tze and the ethics' of Confucius. This Taoism, which is described as the "way of harmony" with its three jewels of character, gentleness, economy and humility, advocates the minimum of social, economic and political organization and still gives the key to the Chinese character.The Mongol and Manchu conquests of the 12th and 17th centuries, respectively, could hardly be dignified with the name of war, but the superior intelligence and harder mentality of the unwarlike Chinese finally absorbed...

The tide has turned. Developments in China that have continued to unfold over the last four years or so have now reached a point where the supply market dynamics of certain industrial minerals have changed significantly. No more is this sea change better exemplified than by the supply market for magnesite, and in particular, its processed derivative grades of dead burned magnesia (DBM), caustic calcined magnesia (CCM), and fused magnesia (FM). But what has compounded the barrage of influencing factors impacting this sector, which include the widespread effects of energy and freight cost increases, has been rising demand from certain end use markets. Clearly, the magnesia market is experiencing bittersweet conditions. But those western producers which have monitored and responded to this market transformation, stand to taste success in the near and medium future. REVOLUTION IN WORLD SUPPLY STATUS In essence, while China, as host to a wealth of magnesite resources in Liaoning province, remains a huge producer of magnesia, its supply dominance on the global magnesia market has been considerably weakened. In future, it will mainly aim to supply domestic, and to some extent east Asian markets. Magnesia consumers outside China are now scrabbling for alternative, ?western? sources of supply. At the same time, magnesia producers outside China that weathered the storm of low cost Chinese DBM and FM imports flooding their regional markets for the last 20 years (and many did not), are busy investing in production capacity increases to meet not just demand from falling Chinese supply, but also demand from end use markets which is picking up. And it is not just a matter of expanding capacity of existing magnesia product lines. In the face of plentiful lower cost DBM and FM substitutes from China over the last couple of decades, many western magnesia producers started to switch their focus to the non-refractory markets (eg. environmental, specialities) which promised lucrative opportunities (and still do) and crucially, a lessening of sales revenue dependence on the DBM refractories market. Now we have the likes of Baymag (Canada), Bommag (Serbia/Turkey), and Kumas (Turkey) not only expanding capacities but seriously considering diversifying into DBM and FM production. Perhaps DSP (Israel), having ceased its famous high purity DBM activity as recently as 2005, might even reconsider a return to the ?other side?. But it?s not all DBM and FM. The CCM and specialities markets are also demanding a response, and so Baymag, DSP, Martin Marietta (USA), Premier Chemicals (USA), Qmag (Australia), MGR (Spain), and Magnifin (Austria) are also stepping up to the market on the non-refractory side. From most accounts, the situation with regard to Chinese supply has been described as one of turmoil, with prices rising, leading to improving opportunities for western producers. The majors are conducting huge expansion programmes, such as Qmag, Magnezit (Russia), and the new look Magnesita (Brazil). Even smaller players such as Causmag (Australia) and Dalmia (India) are looking to increase production. In short, the western magnesia supply sector is witnessing a landmark event in capacity investment and market share penetration as China?s previously dominant role begins to weaken (for a review of western capacity expansions see Industrial Minerals, September 2008, p.28). MERGER & ACQUISITION ACTIVITY Another response of course has been a raft of mergers and acquisitions in order to secure resources and supply outside China. These have included private equity groups taking over Magnesita and Qmag; Imerys entering the FM business through UCM; Peñoles further consolidating the electrical grade FM market by acquiring Minco; Martin Marietta acquiring Morton Salt?s Specialty Magnesia Group; Bomex entering the market through Calmag (now Bommag); LWB acquiring Magnesita; and Magnezit?s pursuit of Slovakian magnesia, with Slovmag aboard while currently wooing SMZ. Interestingly, RHI has gone ?the other way?, and has invested in a state of the art joint venture operation at Dashiqiao, Liaoning, with which it aims to secure high quality feedstock for its Chinese refractory plants. Tata Refractories Ltd has announced intentions to follow suit, and other majors, such as Qmag are known to be interested in seeking options. Naturally, there is now renewed interest from several parties in the idled 50,000 tpa DBM/10,000 CCM Jormag facility, Jordan, and the commercially undeveloped Zhargat project, Saudi Arabia. Elsewhere, there will no doubt be suitors for stakes in SMZ, in Slovakia, and Magnohrom, in Serbia, whose respective ownerships are on the block. THE ?CHINA FACTOR? The ?China factor? has been key to magnesia?s market change, and has significantly influenced prices and availability of material to global markets. Resources & production China hosts the largest share of the world?s magnesite deposits, accounting for 26% or 3,319m. tonnes of predominantly sparry magnesite (followed by North Korea, 24%, and Russia, 22%; Wilson 2008). China accounts for 44% of total world magnesite mined (19m. tonnes in 2007) and 50% of the total world magnesia produced (8.2m. tonnes CCM, DBM, FM; Wilson 2008). Russia follows China at 13% of magnesia supply, illustrating China?s dominance of magnesia production. Apart from one producer in Shandong province, central eastern China, the country?s magnesite resources and production are concentrated around the cities of Haicheng and Dashiqiao in Liaoning province, north-east China. Although there are also producers in the Xiuyan district of south-east Liaoning, the Haicheng-Dashiqiao Magnesite Belt hosts the majority of producers. In total these may number 200-300 of large,

Changes and the pace of change in China’s coal industry have been extraordinary during the past several years. At least 35 of the 94 former coal bureaus have been restructured into different mining companies and groups. Some of the more productive and efficient ones were further strengthened through consolidation and expansions. And several have even formed, or are in the process of forming, strategic alliances with utility companies, railroads, ports and chemical companies to secure additional reserves and coal sales. In addition, the improvement in coal pricing during the past two years has enabled China’s coal industry to move ahead with some needed changes. Coal mining accidents, though, remain a major concern for the Chinese government. Accidents remain high even though the government has made efforts to shutdown more than 55,000 unlicensed, unsafe small coal operations throughout the country.

Investment in the ferrous sector between 1981 and 1985 will total about $9 billion, or 7.6% of the state budget for capital assets. The money will primarily go to complete the first stage of the Baoshan Iron and Steel complex and to increase steel production by 3 Mt* (3.3 million st) and seamless tubing by 0.5 Mt (551,000 st). Investment in 1983 will be about $3.5 billion, a 28% increase over 1981. Although data on nonferrous investment is less specific, the Chinese announced early this spring that the country's investment would be 2.6 times greater than the average spent during the previous five year plans. Geological surveying will also be stepped up. The Ministry of Geology and Minerals recently announced it will incorporate a search for metal and mineral resources into its second round of oil and gas surveys. The Sixth Five-Year Plan desig¬nates some actual production targets. Steel is to increase to more than 72 Mt (79.4 million st). The country's production of 10 priority nonferrous metals - aluminum (and bauxite), copper, lead, zinc, nickel, tin, antimony, mercury, magnesium, and titanium - is to increase 12.7%. Top priority is to develop aluminum production. Renewed efforts are to be made to develop gold and silver production and to increase rare earth and rare metal production. By April 1983 when the China Nonferrous Metal Industry Corp. was established, some five months after publication of the Five-Year Plan, the goals for nonferrous development had already been upgraded and changed to include: • development priority status equal to that of coal's; • an increase of more than 150% in the 1985 projected production level for the 10 top nonferrous metals (a move from the Sixth Five-year Plan's production increase of 12.7% to one of 34%); and • modification of the top 10 nonferrous metals list to include tungsten, molybdenum, and rare earths. Aluminum, copper, lead, and zinc maintained primary importance, while mercury, magnesium, and titanium were deleted. It is likely that the modification will be taken one step further and titanium will be substituted for antimony. China has already indicated its intentions to stabilize rather than expand its antimony industry, while press reports play up the titanium industry's importance to the country's development. In addition, the China Nonferrous Metal Industry Corp. announced that it expects to register a progressive annual increase of 4% in foreign currency earnings through export. China's nonferrous development efforts, therefore, appear two-pronged. First, the country's efforts will be directed toward self-sufficiency in its four major process and primary metals - aluminum, copper, zinc, and lead - and a number of other nonferrous metals that are in increasing demand by its light industry sector. At present, 96% of China's non¬ferrous consumption is composed of aluminum, copper, lead, and zinc. Substantial portions of that must be imported to meet rising demand. Second, efforts will concentrate on those metals that can be developed the fastest and are in "urgent demand" on the international market. Metals such as tungsten, tin, molybdenum, titanium, nickel, and rare earths will be given freer use of foreign capital and technology to increase production levels and raise quality. Examples of some projects in the area include upgrading the country's carbide industry and developing new high speed and tool steels to meet international standards. DURING the four years, 1922, 1923, 1924, and 1925, China produced the following quantities of non-ferrous metals and ores: Antimony Products - 67,869 (long) tons. The production for 1925 was 20,869 tons, of which 80% was regulus, 14% crude,and 6% oxide.Arsenic (White) - 4200 tons. The production for 1925 was 1200 tons, but only 90 tons were exported, some 25% of which to Hong-Kong, France, and U.S.A. each, and the rest in small lots to other countries. Domestic consumption was 1110 tons, and thelocal price for "cake" was around £47 per ton on 1925 exchange.Arsenic Ore (Realgar) - 1400 tons.Lead Ore (Galena) - 44,853 tons. The production for 1925 was 10,853 tons, of which 16%, produced in Korea, went to Japan, and 84% produced in Hunan, went to Europe.Manganese Ore (Pyrolusite) - 142,567 tons. The production for 1925 was 42,567 tons, of which 94.3% went to Japan.Tin Ingot - 33,480 tons. In 1925 the exports to Hong-Kong were 8880 tons of usual rough tin of 94% to 96%. Most of this was refined to No. I Chinese quality of 99.3% and exported to U.S.A. and Europe, owing to the good price ruling.Sulphur - 12,000 tons. Sulphur is included in this list in order to explain how its production led to the discovery of some other ores.Wolfram - 19,668 tons. The production in 1925 was 5868 tons, most of which came from the Quee Mee mountain district in South Kiangsi, from the detrital deposits. Civil disturbances prevented the usual output from Hunan border.Zinc Ore (Blende) - 134,190 tons. Exports for 1925 were 34,190 tons of low-grade ore, averaging 30% zinc, 14% lead, and 7% silver...

"The People's Republic of China could very well be considered the largest untapped mineral and metal resource in the world. The proven reserves of antimony, barite, bauxite, fluorspar, graphite, lithium, magnesite, mercury, molybdenum, phosphate, pyrite, rare earths, talc, tin, titanium, tungsten, vanadium and zinc are among the largest in the world.Any company involved in the purchase or supply of industrial raw materials has undoubtedly followed the phenomenal growth of some of the Chinese mineral commodities, where growths in production of more than 200010 have occurred during the past ten years, for commodities like barite, cement, gold, gympsum silver and talc. Others, like bauxite and phosphate, experienced production increases in one year alone of over 45%, from 1986 through 1987!A popular rationale in the United States during the past two years has been the acknowledgment by Professor David Calleo, of Johns Hopkins School of Advanced Studies, that ""America is not sinking-the rest of the world is rising"". While we recognized this rise to be that of economic power for Japan, Korea, Brazil, Taiwan and, more recently, the newly-combined Germanies, China has also successfully completed her own modern five year development binge. But with each boom there is also a bust, and the start of the 1990sfor China shows signs of economic distress. China posted a budget deficit equivalent of US$1.9 billion in 1989 coupled with official inflation at 18010. Projections for 1990 are for US$1.8 billion deficit and inflation as high as 24%. However, government spending in the first seven months of the year climbed 16.4%, outpacing an 11.6% rise in revenue. Spending increases have been related to the government policy to keep prices on domestic goods artificially low, through subsidies, and to bailout inefficient state companies."

The Chino Mines Company, a Kennecott-Mitsubishi partnership, located in Hurley, New Mexico, recently completed a $405 million modernization of its mine, concentrator, and smelter facilities. The mine/ concentrator modernization commenced in 1980 and the smelter modernization began during 1982. Modernization of the mine and concentrator facilities involved increasing the mining rate from 98 kt/d (108,000 stpd) to 152.2 kt/d (167,800 stpd). Ore mining was designed to increase production from 20.2 kt/d (22,300 stpd) to 34.0 kt/d (37,500 stpd). A new concentrator was constructed near the mine using semi-autogenous grinding. The new smelter uses the INCO flash smelting process, increasing capacity by 40.8 kt/a (45,000 stpy) to 99.8 kt/a (110,000 stpy) of salable copper.

As mining operations progress toward tele-mining and autonomous procedures, the need for machine performance monitoring increases. Presently, through a combination of vision, sound, and other subjective observations, an operator attempts to optimize the mechanical excavator’s operation. As the operator is moved away from the face in the case of tele-mining or completely removed for autonomous operation, the qualitative sensory input is lost. This lost information must be replaced with quantifiable sensory input. Chip formation detection may be a suitable replacement sensory input. Chip formation can be predicted with high confidence (>80%) through the analysis of the load waveform associated with the bit/rock interface.

Geological mapping on the Canadian Shield in northeastern Alberta outlined severalgranitoid rock massespotentially suitable as building stone. A particularly attractive prospect, the Chipewyan Red Granite, was subjected to an aerial survey and ground check. The petrologic and fracture characteristics critical for quarrying and use as a building stone were assessed in the course of detailed mapping at two of the most favourable sites. The extension of good rock was tested to shallow depths at one site by shallow diamond-drill coring. , The Chipewyan Red Granite displays a warm red colour, medium grain size and fairly massive texture, and takes a good polish. Deleterious geologic features studied in outcrop and subjected to structural analysis included regular joint systems, quartz veins, pegmatite dykes, basic shear zones and fault zones. Many of these key geologic features are systematic and hence predictable for stone quarrying purposes; other features, such as irregular fracelM tures, are non-systematic and arefar less predictable. The megascopic structural features studied show similar preferred orientations which appear to be collectively related to the tectonic history.

"The current state-of-the-art of chloride hydrometallurgy for treatment of complex sulphide bulk concentrates is reviewed. General considerations regarding the various flowsheet steps are examined and options discussed. Then, individual flowsheets are presented and discussed. Finally, the forward prospects for chloride hydrometallurgy for treatment of complex sulphide bulk concentrates is considered and conclusions drawn concerning the likely application of this technology in the future. IntroductionHydrometallurgical processes for treating sulphide concentrates, in general, have received considerable attention over the last three decades or more. Many flowsheets have been developed, many pilot-plant studies have been undertaken and several processes are now successfully operating. For example, direct ammoniacal pressure leaching has been used by Sherritt Gordon Mines since the 1950s to extract nickel from pentlandite concentrates, the roast-leach-electrowin route is widely used to recover zinc from sphalerite concentrates and direct sulphuric acid pressure leaching of sphalerite concentrates has been successfully commercialized. Also, Duval Corporation operated a direct cupric/ferric chloride leaching process (Schweitzer and Livingston, 1982) with electrowinning to recover copper from chalcopyrite concentrates, this process (now closed) being the only chloride process which has been commercialized for a sulphide flotation concentrate. Despite these developments, it has long been considered, particularly for copper sulphide concentrates, that direct hydrometallurgical processes are in the main unlikely to be able to compete successfully with smelting for large-scale operations of simple high-grade single metal concentrates. As long as such concentrates can be produced commercially, smelting is likely to remain the principal processing route (Flett, 1981). This view is being challenged nowadays through pressure leaching developments made by Dynatec and CESL in Canada and the recent start-up of the Western Metals Gunpowder plant at Mt. Gordon in Queensland (Flett, 2000). Complex sulphide ores offer even greater opportunities because of the ability to produce a bulk sulphide concentrate from the complex sulphide ore with considerably higher metal recovery than is often possible from the production of individual metal sulphide concentrates from differential flotation. Interest continues to focus on hydrometallurgical solutions to these processing problems, particularly with regard to chloride hydrometallurgy. The leaching of a complex matte in chlorine and chloride media was studied. The matte was prepared from manganese nodules by the reduction smelting-sulfidation route. From XRD analysis, the major phases of the matte were identified as CuFeS2, CuS2, (FeNi)9S8, (FeNi)S2, Ni9S8, Ni3S2, (CoFeNi)9S8 and Co metal. Investigated were the chlorine, hydrochloric acid, hydrochloric acid-oxygen, ferric chloride, ferric chloride-oxygen, cupric chloride and cupric chloride-oxygen systems. The results are discussed in terms of reagent concentration, retention time, leach temperature and gas sparging rate. The chlorination process resulted >99% metal extraction efficiency within a short retention time and at atmospheric temperature. However, there were no preferential extractions of Cu, Ni and Co with respect to Fe. The cupric chloride-oxygen system produced leach liquors with the lowest Fe content and with a high base-metal extraction. Sulfide sulfur was converted to mixtures of elemental sulfur and sulfate in all the studied systems.

"The two dominant metallurgical problems in treating most base metal sulphide concentrates in both the chloride and sulphate system are iron removal and sulphur elimination, respectively [1-3]. In this paper the opportunities, limitations and fundamentals of the chloride metallurgy system are described against this background. Only the treatment of oxide and sulphide ores is considered. Both hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical unit process operations are highlighted, since most successful base metal processes are based on a combination of the two. Hence, an overview of the technical and also some economical aspects of chloride metallurgy are presented.This overview summarizes the successful applications of chloride metallurgy, but it will not give exhaustive process and plant descriptions. It predominantly focuses on the essential technical features of the metallurgical unit process operations, while providing numerous references separately."

The U. S. Bureau of Mines has developed technology to recover by-product materials from aluminum scrap using engineered scavenger compounds (ESC). ESCs are structural oxides with a channel or tunnel structure that allows them to hold ions of a specitksizes and charges. The scavenging reaction is easily reversible allowing the ESC to be recharged for continued use and the ion is recovered as an electro deposit. Key features of this novel technology are; a) ESC ,systems are designed to have a high degree of selectivity for a desired ionic species. b) The recovered mater.ial requires little or no additional reprocessing prior to reuse. Two current uses for the ESC technology that are described in this paper are the removal and recycle oflithium (Li) from lithium aluminum (Li-AL) alloys; and, using ESCs as a replacement for the conventional demaging (magnesium removal) technology used by the secondary casting industry. Research indicates that the ESC technology proposed for both these applications has either 'distinct economic and/or environmental advantages over previously employed methods of recovering. metal values from aluminum scrap.

Coal is our most abundant, low cost energy resource. Expansion of its use is being challenged due to "SO2 emission" regulation with even more restrictive legislation pending. High quality coal reserves are becoming more limited due to greater use in recent years. Aids to allow more use of coal in today's environment include beneficiation of coal before combustion and scrubbing the emissions from coal during combustion. Dow's efforts to help meet these challenges by beneficiating coal include true heavy media gravity separations with chlorinated solvents and liquid/liquid partitioning processes and "Dow Solvent Recovery Technology" to recover the solvent from product (or floats) and rejects (sinks), The objectives of the efforts to clean coal are to reduce sulfur and ash. In this paper, the solvents will be described; a general flow diagram presented; some of the results on upgrading various coals will be described, and projected costs of full-scale plants using chlorinated solvents will be compared to conventional cleaning plants.

The utilization of chlorination in extractive metallurgy and advanced ceramics areas has been widely investigated as a preparative route in order to obtain intermetallic compounds, which are used as precursors in the development of new materials and process. The major processes of decomposition of rare-earth ores use sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide at high temperatures, however there is not much work concerning chlorination. In this work, a systematic study of the reaction between xenotime (REPO4), chlorine and carbon has been performed. Particular emphasis was on kinetic studies to establish optimized conditions for the reaction. The kinetics of chlorination of xenotime raw material by rare-earth elements/compounds has been studied over a temperature range from 600°C to 950°C. The influence on the rate of conversion of xenotime to RECl3 on temperature, partial pressure of chlorine, carbon content, and particle size were investigated. A global rate equation that includes these parameters has been developed. The results show that the process follows the unreacted core-shrinking model with a formation of a porous product layer. The powder X ray-diffraction technique corroborated this model showing clearly the patterns related to the formation of yttrium oxychloride (YOCl), indicating that the reaction mechanism involves the presence ofan intermediate step before the formation of lanthanide chloride.
