Traditionally (with a few exceptions) tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have been utilized on tunnel projects where the risks associated with deep tunnels (rock burst, squeeze, etc) are low (or expected to be low). This has generally been due to the extremely adverse consequences of entrapping or damaging a TBM under such conditions; but also due to the relative difficulty of dealing with these ground conditions in the confined working area of a TBM, in comparison to a drill and blast heading. This paper review the constraints of operating a TBM in a deep tunnel and discusses related project experience, particularly recent and current experience with TBMs in the deep Alpine Base Tunnels. Potential future applications of TBMs in the development of large, deep underground mines are also discussed.

Stillwater Mining Co. (SMC) is the largest primary producer of platinum and palladium in North America. SMC operates two underground mines in south central Montana, along the 45-km (28-mile) platinum/palladium J-M Reef in the Stillwater Complex. The Stillwater Mine exploits 9.6 km (6 miles) of deposit strike length and East Boulder Mine exploits 4 km (2.5 miles) of deposit length. The two mines are 20.4 km (12.7 miles) apart with SMC controlling a considerable length along the entire J-M Reef trace. Production at the Stillwater Mine began in 1986 and in 1988 the first tunnel boring machine (TBM) was commissioned, becoming an integral part of mine development at SMC. TBMs have been used for developing production footwall laterals (FWL) to access new mining blocks at the Stillwater Mine, as well as boring twin crosscut ac-cess tunnels at the East Boulder. Two TBM development expansion projects are currently in progress: the Graham Creek project at the East Boulder Mine, which will extend footwall lateral development 2,591 m (8,500 ft) to the west, and the Blitz project, where a TBM will be commissioned to extend east out of the Stillwater Mine to 3,658 m (12,000 ft) beyond the current production mining front. General strike and dip of the Reef is west to east and to the north, respectively.

Stillwater Mining Company has an extensive history with tunnel boring machines (TBM) at the Stillwater and East Boulder underground PGM mines in Montana. The first use of a TBM was a 4 m (13 ft) diameter main beam unit at the Stillwater mine starting in 1988, where 6.4 km (4 mi) of tunnels were driven parallel to the J-M Reef orebody on four different levels. TBM?s were central to the development of the East Boulder Mine as two 4.6 m (15 ft) TBM?s drove two 5,639 m (18,500 ft) parallel tunnels to access the J-M Reef; one of these units is still in service driving a 2,591 m (8,500 ft) access West of the East Boulder mine for the Graham Creek project. For the Blitz Project, a 5.5 m (18 ft) diameter main beam unit will be utilized to drive a 6,858 m (22,500 ft) ventilation and rail haulage level East of the Stillwater mine. TBM?s have been preferred method for developing new mines and sections of the J-M reef as the geometry and geology of the Stillwater Complex allow for faster development compared to conventional methods.

"Drilling twinned holes is a traditional technique used for verification of intersections of high-grade mineralization, testing of historic data, or confirmation of drillhole data during geological due diligence studies. Twinned holes can also be used for special tasks such as correcting earlier data that are recognized to be biased. Successful implementation of the twinned-holes technique requires thorough planning. Experience suggests that good practice is to drill twinned holes no more than 5 m apart. Many unsuccessful twinned-holes programs could possibly have failed because the twinned holes have been drilled too far apart.Twinned holes are best compared by mineralization intersections and, if the data and geological characteristics of the deposit permit, by samples, equal-length composites, or geological units. Variables to be verified by twinned holes should include the thicknesses of the geological units of interest (e.g., mineralized thickness) as well as the presence of significant geological features (e.g., ore/mineralization contacts, alteration, etc.).A formal, rigorous analysis of twinned-hole data is essential. Repeatability of sampling, analytical results, and bias must be analyzed and statistically quantified. The number of twinned holes required for conclusive statistical and geostatistical analysis can be as high as 20-30, in particular where the studied variables are characterized by high short-range (local) variability.The efficiency of this approach is demonstrated by several examples of successfully applied twinned-hole projects, including applications to orogenic gold, mineral sands, bauxite, and iron ore deposits."

"Mixed ground tunnels come in all kinds. In rock tunnels with possible faults and high pressure water, the challenges are many. With the advent of Crossover TBMs, contractors can minimize machine wear in such conditions while maximizing efficiency. The newest generation of Crossover is exemplified by two projects in Albania and Turkey. A 5.56 m Crossover TBM destined for Turkey’s Gerede Water Transmission will be assembled using Onsite First Time Assembly (OFTA) from within an existing tunnel. The unique machine will bore through 30 fault zones requiring the TBM to be sealable to up to 20 bar so pre-consolidation grouting can be done. If boring under pressure is required, the TBM will bore sequentially using the screw conveyor fore and aft gates. Skewing further towards hard rock, a unique 6.2 m diameter Double Shield TBM with Crossover features was designed for Albania’s Moglicë Headrace Tunnel. The machine features closure doors and a sealing system to contain inrushes of water until they can be grouted off. This paper will discuss the unique aspects of the Crossover designs, including their inception as based on past projects in difficult ground, and their utilization at the two current projects. INTRODUCTION Specialized tunnel boring machines have been made for years to tackle specific types of ground conditions. Traditional types of TBMs bore within a specific set of ground conditions. If a project is located in a competent granite face, then a Main Beam machine is a good solution. In soft ground, Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machines are the method of choice. Years of experience and engineering advancements have made both types of machines fast and economical solutions for tunneling. Unfortunately not all ground conditions are a perfect swath of one material, and the need for a more diverse machine is apparent."

Blue Mountain Minerals is a large supplier of calcium carbonate products used by various manufacturers as a major raw material. Very small amounts of free carbon in the rock can have a huge impact in carbon-sensitive applications. The marble in the deposit at Blue Mountain Minerals contains variable amounts of free carbon in the form of trace amounts of the mineral graphite.To make quality improvements, variography was used to measure the impact of non-ideal sampling practices at the Blue Mountain Minerals operations in Columbia, California in the United States. A major investment in correct sampling systems and sampling protocols was implemented over a one-year period. Subsequent variography was used to measure the improvement on the predictability of the graphite content in marble produced by the quarry and as it is processed as an acceptable raw material for extremely carbon-sensitive applications. The improvements of the sampling protocols, control of long-range changes and better knowledge of process cycles are easily noticeable on variograms when they happen to exist. "Design for reconstruction of the East Flagstaff traffic interchange project located in Flagstaff, Arizona posed particular challenges. The proposed design included construction of a nearly 50-foot tall mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall given rightof- way constraints and soft subgrade soils. The tight right-of-way, approximately 15 feet in certain locations, adjacent to existing structures limited the number of viable remedial alternatives to provide grade separation at the proposed bridge abutment without significant settlement. Preliminary analyses indicated the existing subgrade soils - consisting primarily of relatively soft silts and clays with decomposed pumice - would settle approximately 12 to 14 inches resulting in unacceptable wall deformation. Stone columns placed via vibratory methods (vibro-replacement) consisting of circular excavations which penetrate to firm bearing soils and which are filled with crushed stone were selected to densify the existing subgrade soils. The implemented mitigation measures helped limit settlement to less than one inch and allow for successful construction of the project. The project history - including site constraints, subsurface conditions, evaluation of remedial alternatives, stone columns methodology, and effectiveness of ground improvements - will be discussed.IntroductionThis paper describes the subsurface investigation performed for the reconstruction of the Business Route 40 (B-40) (Country Club Drive) and United States (US) 89 Traffic Interchange (TI) located within the city limits of Flagstaff, Arizona. This project is currently referred to as the East Flagstaff TI. The Project Site Vicinity Map is shown below.The former B-40/US 89 TI was considered ineffective in handling the current and projected volumes of traffic which transition from northbound (NB) B-40 to US 89 (both directions), as well as from southbound (SB) US 89 to SB B-40. The intent of the project was to reconstruct the TI to better accommodate projected traffic volumes. The project eliminated the existing ramps from both NB B-40 to SB and NB US 89. The new interchange includes a Tee intersection from B-40 to US 89. In order to accommodate this alignment, the profile of US 89 was raised several feet (on nearly the same as existing horizontal alignment) to match the elevated profile of B-40. B-40 was shifted just west of its current alignment to accommodate construction of a new, wider bridge structure which spans over Industrial Drive, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railway, and old Route 66. South of the new bridge, B-40 transitioned back to the existing alignment just north of the I-40/B-40 TI. Within the project limits, both US 89 and B-40 were widened to three travel lanes in each direction."

The idea of using water-only cyclones to scalp clean coal from the feed to other devices has recently been gaining in popularity.l,2,6 An indication of this popularity is that water- only cyclone scalping is already employed in a few commercial plants. Water-only cyclones scalp the feed to a heavy media vessel in the Warwick plant,3 to Deister tables in the Rowland plant,4 and to a heavy media cyclone circuit in the Amherst Coal Company's McGregor plant.5 Despite this trend, we found surprisingly little information in the literature on the performance of water-only cyclone scalping. Therefore, we undertook a study of its technical merits, limiting our investigation to a water-only cyclone scalper in conjunction with heavy-media cyclones. We felt this to be a reasonable combination of equipment, since both processes operate well on the same size coal. First, we developed simple mathematical relationships revealing general characteristics of the system. Next, we compared the clean coal yield and quality obtainable by the system on four different coals with that obtainable by heavy-media cyclone circuit alone and water-only cyclones middlings recirculation circuit alone. This was done by using computer program to simulate the operation of the three systems. Finally, we considered the effect that implementation of the system would have on a typical preparation plant circuit.

The concept of using water-only cyclones as a clean coal scalping device preceding a heavy media cyclone circuit shows considerable promise, as it can considerably reduce the feed to the heavy media cyclone circuit. The system will not perform as well as a heavy media cyclone circuit alone, but the resultant loss in yield is small and may be negligible under some conditions. The concept of water-only cyclone scalping has previously been suggested by others. By reducing the amount of raw coal to be processed in the more expensive circuits overall capital and operating costs may be reduced. There are a few commercial plants with circuits operating on this concept. In the Warwick and Rowland plants water-only cyclones are used to scalp the feed to a heavy media vessel and Deister tables respectively while Amherst Coal Company's McGregor plant uses them to scalp the feed to a heavy media cyclone circuit. The system was evaluated on a technical basis, both from a theoretical viewpoint and by analysis of a computer simulation, in order to gain a fuller understanding of its usefulness and limitations.

Large-scale continuous ?Resin-In-Pulp? process tests were conducted at Irgiredmet. The object for testing was the sample of oxidized gold ore from one of Siberian deposit. Weak-base ion ex-change resin PuroGold was used as adsorbent. The duration of ?Resin-In-Pulp? tests was sufficient for a completing of three cycles ?Adsorption/Elution?. Gold in feed was 0.95 mg/L. Gold in solid phase of adsorption tails? 0.065 g/t. Gold in liquid phase of adsorption tails? 0.026 mg/L. Total gold in adsorption tails ?0.11 g/t. Gold recovery ?94.3 %. The use of regenerated resin had practically no effect on gold losses with adsorption tails. Alkaline cyanide solution (NaCN-20g/L, NaOH- 5g/L) was used as eluent for gold elution from loaded resin. Elution temperature ?60 °C. Number of eluent bed volumes passed ?10. Loaded resin analysis was following (g/ton): Au? 1700~1250; Ag? 400~460; Cu? 250~450; Zn? 5100~9600; Fe? 860~1200. Elution efficiency: Au? 95.3%~97.8%; Ag? 84.0%~88.0%; Cu? 84.0%~88.0%; Zn? 97.0%~99.0%. Although high zinc resin loading was shown zinc was eluted efficiently. The adsorption properties of fresh PuroGold resin, PuroGold resin after 3 cycle ?Adsorp-tion-Elution?cycles in comparison with AM-2B resin were tested. It was shown from adsorption isotherms that selectivity of PuroGold resin slightly less in comparison with AM-2B resin mainly due to its higher zinc adsorption properties. It was founded on base of test results that adsorption properties of PuroGold resin was practically constant during three ?Adsorption/Elution? cycles. Gold may be efficiently recovered by resin tested. There were no difficulties during gold elution from loaded resin and its regeneration. PuroGold resin was recommended for industrial use in RIP process. Process design criteria were developed and plant design is on progress at the moment.

Particles for heap leaching in conventional circuits are prepared using Cone crushers. Cone crushers are used to crush the ore to the size range between 12-25 mm for heap leaching operations. Leaching from these relatively coarse particles occurs only at the surface and in subsurface regions, which are accessible from the surface by cracks and pores. Since leaching is active in accessible areas, the method of comminution that forms multiple cracks and pores would offer an advantage for heap leach. An investigation was performed in this study to assess if the HPGR forms more cracks and pores than a Cone crusher. X-ray computed tomography (CT) was used to characterize the degree of cracks and pores formed by these two comminution devices that can be used for heap leaching feed preparation. In order to compare the effect of the comminution method on crack network generation, a bulk sample of the zinc ore was crushed by the HPGR at three different pressure settings (45, 95 and 120 bar), the sample ore was also crushed with a Cone crusher for comparison purposes. Products from the Cone crusher and HPGR experiment were then screened into five size fractions ((-25 +19), (-19+16), (-16+9.5), (-9.5+5), (-5+4.75) mm), Subsamples from the ((-25 +19), (-16+9.5), (-5+4.75) mm) size fractions were analysed. The spatial distribution of the crack network of sphalerite particles was characterized using a highresolution industrial X-ray CT system. This paper describes the use of image analysis techniques including image segmentation, which uses a combination of thresholding and other methods to characterize and quantify crack and mineral dissemination in the sphalerite particles after comminution with the HPGR and Cone crusher. The results are validated with those obtained using traditional techniques such as physical gas (with N2) adsorption, mercury intrusion porosimetry, SEM and QEMSCAN.

THE technical and safety press have devoted much space in support of or in opposition to the use of booster and auxiliary fans in coal mines. The Mine Safety Board of the U. S. Bureau of Mines has given the matter consideration, and the Mine Ventilation Committee of the A. I. M. E. is now seeking a discussion of the merits and demerits of such fans to guide it in formulating recommendations. In this paper, I will set up some principles on which I believe most engineers will agree and from which we may work toward a decision, though as to what that decision shall be there may be a difference in opinion. Before stating the points on which I believe. there is accord, I will distinguish between booster and auxiliary fans.

2-hydroxy-3-naphthoy hydroxamic acid code name F203 is a good collector of cassiterite, 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoy hydroxamic acid code name ZJ-3. F203 and ZJ-3 are similar series of isomers. They have similar naphthye, and similar series of functional OH and ?CONHOH, but the seat of OH and ?CONHOH group are different, on the F203 is 2.3; on the ZJ-3 is 1.2, ortho position too. According to Isomeric principle ZJ-3 is a good collector of cassiterite slime too. Using ZJ-3 as collector flotation -10µm occupies 90%, grade 1.16% Sn cassiterite slime of Da Chang Chehe concentration plant, pass one coursing flotation, two cleaning and one scarenging flotation, and obtains grand 18.26% Sn, recovery 92.68% cassiterite concentrate. The result proves the Isomeric principle of flotation reagents is correct again. This principle may supply to synthetize new flotation reagents reference. Rational design based on engineering fundamentals is essential for the layout of safe, stable shafts and tunnels. Shafts and tunnels including winzes, raises, adits, and crosscuts are lifelines to the underground and must be secure. The contribution of this paper describes a significant extension in existing software previously developed for five important design problems in strata-bound mines such as coal, trona, salt, potash, and some large, lead-zinc mines. This extension in software allows analysis to proceed in three easy steps: (1) preparation of a strata properties file, (2) generation of the finite element model, a mesh, and (3) finite element program execution. Circular, elliptical, and rectangular shaft sections are available for a single shaft, twin shafts, and shafts in a row. Spacing of twin shafts and shafts in a row is a free parameter (pillar width). Tunnel shapes are the same as shafts but include the conventional arched back section. Dipping strata of variable thickness, depth and orientation relative to the excavation of choice are allowed. The analyses are three-dimensional. An elastic-plastic material model based on associated rules of flow and an N-type yield condition for isotropic, transversely isotropic, or orthotropic rock are used for all strata. Example analyses from several hardrock mines are provided to illustrate the three-step process including mesh plotting and plotting of selected results. The goal of this software is to advance mine design technology for improved miner health and safety.

"This contribution describes development and application of a user-friendly finite element program, UT3PC, to address three important problems in underground coal mine design: (1) safety of main entries, (2) barrier pillar size needed for entry protection, and (3) safety of bleeder entries during the advance of an adjacent longwall panel. While the finite element method is by far the most popular engineering design tool of the digital age, widespread use by the mining community has been impeded by the relatively high cost of and the need for lengthy specialized training in numerical methods. Implementation of UT3PC overcomes these impediments in three easy steps: First, a material properties file is prepared for the considered site. Next, mesh generation is automatic through an interactive process. A third and last step is simply execution of the program. Examples using data from several western coal mines illustrate the ease of using the application for analysis of main entries, barrier pillars, and bleeder entry safety.INTRODUCTIONRational design of safe underground entries and crosscuts, barrier pillars, and bleeder entries begins with a site-specific analysis of stress. An analysis of stress identifies the critical regions of high-stress concentration where yielding is likely and additional or more focused ground control measures are needed. This analysis also identifies regions where stress concentration is low, and risk mitigation is less urgent. Displacements induced by mining, including roof sag, floor heave, and pillar squeeze, are also of importance to stability. The popular finite element method is well-suited for such analysis and has been in use for studying coal mine engineering problems since the late 1960s (Dahl, 1969). The method has been taught in undergraduate engineering curricula for many years and offers an alternative to existing design procedures based mostly on rules of thumb, empirical methods based on mine data, and predigital-age concepts of strata mechanics. However, despite the versatility of the finite element method, usage has been limited, mainly because of the cost of the software and the required training in numerical methods.The program UT3PC (Pariseau, 2017) has evolved from early two-dimensional versions in the era of mainframe computers. These early versions were still quite limited using only a few hundred elements that required overnight turnaround times. Recent versions of UT3PC are convenient and efficient desktop programs that use several million elements. With the advent of personal computers in the mid-1980s and subsequent increase in computer speed, expanded memory, and lower costs, applications for mining increased in three-way cooperative projects among industry, the former U.S. Bureau of Mines, and academia. The Spokane Research Center of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of Utah, developed a two-dimensional desktop finite element program, UT2PC, available to the mining community in 1991. This was a short course offered at the 1991 SME Annual Meeting in Denver, CO."

Corundum, little publicized as an industrial abrasive, has, in its small way, contributed greatly to the production of many specialized items vital to our war program and to Our allies. Optical elements Of the highest quality for range finders, bombsights, and scientific instruments; precision metal parts for torpedoes and airplane engines; quartz crystal plates for military radios; armorplate and malleable castings for tanks and guns; and eyeglasses for everyone; these are some Of the products that corundum has helped to produce in the quantities needed and on time. Unlike metals and many other raw materials, corundum is not incorporated into any Of these finished products. It is simply a grinding medium used to produce the desired finish or precision; an operating supply or tool, so to speak. With a Mobs' scale index of 9, corundum ranks next to the diamond in hardness among the natural minerals and is superior to emery and garnet. The gem varieties of corundum, including the Oriental ruby and sapphire, are frequently more highly prized as jewels than the diamond. It is the intent Of this paper to deal Only with a description of the corundum industry, the administration of wartime control, and certain economic aspects as seen by the author. Several references are listed to assist anyone who wishes further information on the geological occurrence of the mineral. Ore Production and Consumption For the past two decades, south Africa has been the world's sole producer of corundum ore. A possible exception is Russia, where, it is understood, there was considerable production during the thirties for domestic consumption but for which statistics are lacking. The United States is the world's principal consumer of corundum ore; imports lor the period 1934 through 1940 averaging 3000 Short tons per year, The years 1935 and 1936 were close to the 5000-ton mark, and imports during 1941, the last prewar year for which statistics have been released, were approximately 6000 Short tons. Again lacking statistics on Russia, the United Kingdom ranks second, but far below the United States in consumption of ore. Historically, corundum has been found in some 35 countries throughout the world, but the principal deposits are in South Africa, Canada, Madagascar, Russia and the united States. Deposits are generally small and subject to rapid exhaustion. Thus, the United States was the principal world producer for the period 1870 to 1900, when operations ceased except for two years during World War I. India was a producer of ore from 1898 through 1921, with peak output in 1916 through 1918 Canada came into production in 1901 with substantial output of ore and finished grain until 1914; the production thereafter was smaller until 1921. Monazite has had a Cinderella-like history. Although nearly go per cent pure rare-earth compound (rare-earth phosphate) it was sought at first not for the rare earths but for the sake of a minor constituent—thorium. The thorium, essential for the Welsbach gaslight mantle, was present in only small quantities and the principal constituents, the rare earths, were largely discarded. Gradually, however, the rare earths have developed uses of their own and today have left the thorium far behind in value. Occurrence Monazite was first produced commercially about 1886, in North Carolina, where it was collected in small sluices by farmers who found it in stream beds on their land. The deposits were later exploited on a larger scale, but were mostly abandoned in a few years, when monazite from Brazil came upon the market in far larger quantities. Domestic production ceased entirely in 1906. The Brazilian source is still active, together with Indian, Dutch East Indies, and Australian deposits. Several other localities in the United States have yielded monazite, but none of these has produced commercially as yet. Monazite occurs originally in pegmatite~ and gneisses, through which, unfortunately, it is scattered in highly dispersed form. All commercially useful deposits consist of transported monazite sands liberated by erosion and concentrated by the action of water, which has sluiced away lighter materials and concentrated the heavy (D = 5.0 to 5.2) grains of monazite, together with ilmenite, zircon, garnet, and other dense minerals. The Carolina deposits were in stream beds; most of the other deposits mentioned are on or near the seashore, where the action of the waves has served to concentrate the monazite. In most cases today, the sands are worked to obtain the ilmenite and zircon, as well as monazite. The minerals are separated by means of sluices, dry tables, and magnetic separators, and each is finally obtained nearly pure. No crushing or grinding is necessary. The concentrates are shipped in fiber bags. Monazite has had a Cinderella-like history. Although nearly go per cent pure rare-earth compound (rare-earth phosphate) it was sought at first not for the rare earths but for the sake of a minor constituent—thorium. The thorium, essential for the Welsbach gaslight mantle, was present in only small quantities and the principal constituents, the rare earths, were largely discarded. Gradually, however, the rare earths have developed uses of their own and today have left the thorium far behind in value. DEFINITION OF BAUXITE The term "bauxite" (1) dates back to 1821, when it was assigned to a deposit of red earthy material outcropping near the village of Les Baux in Southern France. Chemical analysis indicated the presence of aluminium oxide, iron oxide and water. Deposits of bauxite are widespread throughout the world although the major developments occur within 30 degrees of the Equator. Essentially bauxite is the product of weathering and leaching of a variety of sediments or rocks, generally in a high-rainfall tropical or sub-tropical climate, resulting in the enrichment of the aluminium oxide content. It is characterised by the presence of one or more of the minerals, gibbsite, boehmite, and diaspore. The other constituents are usually clay, (typically kaolin), hematite and/or goethite (iron-oxides), anatase (titanium oxide), and possibly silica as quartz. A variety of minor elements may be present, such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, vanadium, gallium, manganese, and many others in very small quantities. Organic compounds are normally present from development in association with a soil horizon where vegetation may be encouraged by the high rainfall necessary for bauxitisition. The physical form depends upon the geological history of the deposit and correlation also exists with the mineralogy. Older deposits which have been subject to burial are invariably hard and compact with the alumina predominantly occurring as boehmite or diaspore, while the more recent, surface deposits are frequently less compacted and gibbsite is the dominant alumina mineral. In these later deposits, the physical form can vary from the fine red soil (terra rosa) of Jamaica to the Weipa pisolites to the cemented Arkansas type. The presence of concretionary structures is an important aid in identification in the field.
