Before going into this subject, I would very much like to call to your attention some past history on patents granted by the United States Patent office that involved ammonium nitrate. On February 10, 1885, a patent was granted to Russell S. Penniman. "The object of this invention is to securely protect ammonium nitrate against deliquescent and to maintain it in substantially its normal disintegrated condition, so as to afford a new product suited for ready use in the manufacture of high explosives, and enable the immediate admixture thereof with any of the well known explosive substances or compounds heretofore employed. 'Whether the nitrate be thus granulated or otherwise reduced to a granular or divided condition, it is then thoroughly mixed with about twelve (12) percent of the fluid or semi-fluid carbonaceous protecting medium, which forms a readily applied jacket or coating for the granules of nitrate and also serves as a carbonaceous element in such explosive compounds as it may thereafter be employed in."

Historically, geologic data has not been adequately considered in resource estimation. More recently, with the use of computers and sophisticated estimation algorithms and geostatistical justifications, geology has been downplayed further. Many reasons are given for not using geology including cost, time and irrelevance. None are valid. Boundaries defining mineral domains should be used in computer-generated resource estimates. Selected case histories show how the failure to honor geology has caused discrepancies in resource estimates of actual in-place resources. After-the-fact differences have included decreases in tonnage of up to 50% and increases up to 300%; partial to complete recategorization of material; and 50% decreases in grade. The costs of gathering and using geology are trivial compared to the potential consequences.

Arrium’s OneSteel Whyalla Steelworks in South Australia is a fully integrated plant which operates a single blast furnace. The key operational objective has been to maintain high process availability and stability while maximising the process efficiency and the produced hot metal quality. All ferrous raw material input feeds are sourced exclusively from company iron ore deposits in the nearby Middleback Ranges. The Whyalla blast furnace has mostly operated using a combination of a high percentage of pellet feed, produced in Whyalla, together with screened lump ore.The unique ironmaking challenge has always been to extract the maximum value from the ferrous burden feed available locally. In earlier times, high-grade hematite lump ore was available for both screened lump ore and pellet production. Blast furnace trials from acid to fluxed pellet feed commenced in 1977. The furnace pellet feed has been wholly fluxed since 1981. Many pellet/lump ore feed mixes and significant pellet chemistry composition design changes have been made over the years. These changes have been aimed at best balancing the ferrous burden availability/cost and the optimum reducibility/high temperature melting behaviour of the charged ferrous feed within the blast furnace. In more recent times since 2007, the Whyalla blast furnace operation has transitioned from a hematite based pellet feed to a magnetite based pellet feed while there is an ongoing contest dealing with diminishing absolute quality/increased variability raw material feed inputs.The paper will detail key elements of the Whyalla blast furnace operational philosophy with regards to ferrous feed use and process optimisation. A 3-D computerised model of the southern part of Greymouth Coal Limited's Coal Mining Licence area has recently been completed. This model, and associated 3-D CAD tools, has/is being used to optimise drillhole spacing during exploratory data collection and as a visualisation and interpretation aid. This model will also provide the basis for future mine planning, with the emphasis on an optimal mine outline to maximise safety and profitable coal extraction. Previous use of computer techniques was restricted to drillhole database entry, storage and log production. Recently a 3-D geological/structural model was created for the Southern Rapahoe Sector of the Greymouth Coalfield. Geostatistical analysis of the database highlights the inadequacy of the present drillhole spacing for preliminary mine planning. The sparsity of hard data at depth results in a lower level of confidence in the accuracy of the 3-D model. Nevertheless, the model and 3-D CAD techniques has been used to target and refine ongoing resource evaluation, and provides the basis for initial reserves. In the future the geologic model will be used as the basis for preliminary and later (optimal) mine planning. It is also expected to accommodate other forms of data input in seam drilling and seismic. Development of the 3-D computer model was a first in the Greymouth Coalfield and highlights both the use of computerised techniques for resource evaluation and mining, and the effects of wide spaced drillhole data on model accuracy. The computer will continue to provide the most efficient and cost effective tool for optimal resource evaluation and mine planning as Greymouth Coal Limited moves from feasibility/mine planning to full production. The increased use of computer-based methods for mine planning should be seen as part of 'The Changing Face of West Coast Mining' in line with the theme of this Conference.

The Duparquet mining camp situated along the Quebec segment of the Porcupine-Destor Fault was the site of gold exploitation from 1933 to 1956 and 1988 to 1991. Numerous gold showings and deposits straddle the fault. An ongoing regional metallogenic study by the Quebec Geological Survey has identified five main types of gold mineralization, each showing a distinct style, alteration, control, metal content, and timing. In order to maximise the impact of this study, a 3D regional common-earth-model was constructed along a critical segment of the Porcupine-Destor Fault with the gOcad® technology. The realisation of this model required the maximum use of the public SIGEOM numerical database, as well as the recovery of significant private data from exploration company partners. The 3D model is also a powerful new dynamic exploration tool, which can be queried using geological criteria characteristic of the different gold deposit types. This 3D model can be modified and improved continuously by adding data from new drilling, mapping or geophysical surveys. The case of the Porcupine-Destor Fault illustrates the importance of 3D common-earth-modelling in delivering refined technological geological syntheses likely to attract significant investments from the mining exploration industry, especially for deep exploration programs within mature mining camps.

The effectiveness of two synthesized ionic liquids, 1-(benzyloxy)-1-oxopropan-2-aminium 4-methylbenzenesulfonate (1-BOPAMS) and 4-(benzyloxy)-4-oxobutan-1-aminium 4-methylbenzenesulfonate (4-BOBAMS), were evaluated for mild steel corrosion inhibition in 1.0 M hydro-chloric acid solution, using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), and gravimetric techniques. Organic moieties responsible for the adsorption process on mild steel surface were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Gravimetric analysis revealed that the inhibition efficiency of 1-BOPAMS and 4-BOBAMS increased with concentration, with maximum inhibition values of 90.32% and 97.91%, respectively, at the highest concentration of the inhibitors. Gibbs free energy (ΔG°ads) values indicated a strong interaction between the mild steel surface and the molecules of the ionic liquids, and that the adsorption process was spontaneous. These values also show that the inhibitive nature of ionic liquids against mild steel corrosion is caused by a mixedtype of adsorption film formed on the steel surface. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm was used to describe the adsorption of ionic liquid molecules onto the mild steel surface. Polarization curves showed that 1-BOPAMS and 4-BOBAMS have a similar effect on both the anodic and cathodic half-reactions, indicating that they prevent the dissolution of mild steel through both physical and chemical process. Nyquist plots were defined by incomplete semicircle capacitive loops, showing that the charge transfer mechanism controls the corrosion of mild steel in acidic solution.

Traditionally, operators on mineral flotation plants have relied on visual inspection of the froth surface when making adjustments to process set-points. Machine vision systems are being developed to relate froth surface descriptors, which can be consistently measured in real time, to flotation performance. By investigating the impact of various selected operating variables on both froth surface characteristics and metallurgical performance it is possible to develop a management strategy for the control and optimisation of the process. This paper presents the results of testwork conducted at Kennecott copper mine which investigates the relationship between the froth colour and the concentrate grade and discusses the factors which affect the froth colour. This work shows that the main factors that influence the froth colour in this system are molybdenum, copper and iron concentrate grade, pulp and concentrate per cent solids and pulp iron grade.It goes on to develop models to predict the concentrate grade based on colour information and velocity and stability information. It also shows that the most accurate prediction is made with combined colour and stability information.

"Geographic information systems (GIS) provide an efficient means for the recording, manipulation, revision, display and analysis of spatially referenced data. GIS are widely used at the exploration stage of mine development, and are increasingly used for reclamation planning. The ability of a GIS to perform spatial searches and query spatially referenced data make it a powerful tool for use at all stages of mine development. As the amount of data available for analysis increases, so does the power and flexibility of GIS as a planning tool.Starting from the exploration database, this paper describes how a GIS can be used for the development of mining plans based on topography, geology and mineralization information stored in a relational database. Planning decisions approaching the optimal can then be made for a wide range of parameters, including stockpile and waste dump locations, the location of potentially acid generating and neutralizing material for dump design, profitable and risk-controlled mine extraction sequencing, and haul road locations. This is made possible by the overlay and buffer analysis capabilities of a GIS which are explored and exploited to produce a continuous mine production planning program, as well as site remediation and reclamation using a successful case study. IntroductionGeographic information systems (GIS) are a relatively new tool in the mining industry. Although they have existed for a number of years, the potential of GIS for mine management and planning is only beginning to be investigated and exploited. The unique spatial capabilities of GIS make them particularly wellsuited for use in mining, where spatial information is fundamental to the processes of mineral exploration, mine development, and environmental reclamation. A number of potential applications for GIS in the mining industry have been identified, and they are widely used for exploration and reclamation. The use of a GIS as a platform for the development of mine planning routines and software remains an interesting, but as of yet unexplored, application of this technology."

The successful application of the science of rock mechanics to the practical problems of coal mine design requires the acquisition and reduction to useable form of large amounts of field and laboratory data, and the construction and analyses of numerous geostructural models containing a wide variety of geometric and physical strength variables. Typically, the rime constraints placed on a new mine design project coupled with the inherent complexities of a good rock mechanics study combine to limit the applications of rock mechanics to the most rudimentary level. To facilitate a better application of rock mechanics to mine design problems, an interactive software package has been developed for use on a graphic mini-computer system that serves to aid the engineer in the timely and efficient analyses of rock mechanics data and geostructural models. The first phase of the rock mechanics package solicits the input of the raw geologic and rock strength data, analyzes and arranges this data in a logical manner, produces complete listings and statisitical summaries of the various rock properties, and stores the data on magnetic tapes and disks to serve as a future Rock Mechanics Data Base. The second phase of the software package provides for the analyses of a variety of geostructural models using a wide variety of geometric variables coupled with the rock strength data stored in the Rock Mechanics Data Base. This software package allows for the evaluation of numerous geostructural mine models for the design and selection of mine roof support and pillar systems (see Table l).

"A laboratory Knelson Concentrator (LKC), 7.5 cm in diameter, was used to study the performance of a similar unit at plant scale, 76 cm in diameter, This paper reports on sampling and assaying procedures and problems, and discusses the performance of the plant unit.The sampling procedure was based on the extraction of large samples, 5-15 kg, and their complete processing with a LKC, to characterize size-by-size performance. The procedure yielded reliable estimates of overall gold assays, after blatant assaying errors were corrected. The plant centrifugal unit concentrate was sampled in situ, which yielded very erratic grades, with a large overall negative bias. Due to the very heterogeneous nature of the concentrate, which can be linked to flow patterns in the riffles of the unit, it is recommended that for future testwork, the concentrate be recovered separately, blended and then sampled.The plant centrifugal separator, when operated at a feed rate of 25 t/h, yielded total and free gold recoveries of 41 % and 62%, respectively. This is much lower than previously reported data, and suggest that at 25 t/h, the unit is overloaded. However, recovery did not decrease with time over a loading cycle of 2 hours, which suggests that present loading cycles, generally 1 hour, can be significantly increased. INTRODUCTIONThe study of gold gravity circuits is plagued with the statistical problem of determining the behaviour of particles occurring with a very low frequency. This problem becomes particularly acute with increasing particle size. For example, considering the average weight of a gold flake in the 840-1200 µm (20/28 mesh) to be about 5 mg (Banisi et al, 1991), a reasonably high grade feed of 10 git would require, for a relative error (standard deviation) of 10% on grade, 100 particles, that is 0.5 g of gold, or 50 kg of 840-1200 µm material (a Poisson distribution is assumed). Gy's formula, for the same data, yields a weight of 33 kg, with a shape factor of 0.1 and a size distribution factor of 0.5. Both results are comparable; to obtain the suggested weight of material, a stream containing 5% weight in the 840-1200 µm would require 1 tonne samples (of unsized material). The problem rapidly disappears with decreasing particle size. Still with Banisi et al's data, a gold flake in the 300-420 µm range averages 0.5 mg in weight; the same 10% error on grade corresponds to a weight of 5 kg. Gy's formula for the same size distribution and particle shape factors as above predicts a required mass of 1.4 kg. This would correspond to an unsized sample weight of 10 kg with 14% weight in the 300-420 µm, for example."

Thin-lift atmospheric fine drying (AFD) is a technique used to dewater mine and oil sand tailings, which utilises both self-weight consolidation and atmospheric evaporation. The disposed layers undergo a cyclic drying and rewetting process due to precipitation and deposition of additional lifts on top of the dried layer. The current research aims to optimise the deposition process via use of a numerical model and realistic atmospheric conditions, including both periods of drying and wetting. The model is based upon water balance and includes large strain considerations. A number of material behaviours are characterised using empirical fitting curves based upon laboratory measurement of material characteristics, including both the shrinkage and water retention curves for drying and rewetting. The model is able to model multiple lifts, simulating field scale and realistic climatic conditions within timescales suitable for engineering practice (eg seconds or minutes). The model has been previously validated against controlled laboratory experiments and utilised to simulate field tests. "Gold and silver cyanide complexes are presently desorbed from activated carbon by means of hot caustic elutions. These solutions may or may not contain additional sodium cyanide. There are several parameters which affect the rate of stripping. Some of these include pH, ionic strength, and temperature. (1) Stripping is conducted in recirculating (ZADRA) or once through (AARL) circuits.This paper describes the development of a new chemical eluant which significantly increases the rate of stripping of both gold and silver cyanide complexes from activated carbon. Two case history applications are also described.INTRODUCTIONAdditional cyanide is used in strip circuits in order to prevent its depletion which could lead to precipitation of base metals or lead to a change in the nature of the gold cyanide complex to one which does not strip as easily. (2)The strip circuits that are able to function efficiently without the use of cyanide are mostly those where the carbon is acid-cleaned after stripping.Once the minimum cyanide requirement to maintain the complexes in their proper state are fullfilled, any futher incremental increase in the level of cyanide will have no bearing on the rate of stripping. (3)DEVELOPMENT OF THE NEW ELUANTGeneral DiscussionVarious carboxylated materials were investigated including octanoic acid, polycarboxylic acid (various molecular weights), salicylic acid, polymaleic acid, acetic acid. benzoic acid, terephthalic acid, 4, bi-phenyl carboxylic acid, phosphoric acid and stearic acid.The initial work was done on medium activiiy, non acid-cleaned carbon. The silver to gold ratio on the carbon varied greatly.Two different blanks were used. The first was an elution using a 2% caustic and 0.4% cyanide solution while the second was a 2% caustic elution."

Particulate control is a major concern in underground mining and the subject of continuing research world wide. In Canada the federal government's Mining Research Laboratory at EIIiot Lake, Ontario, has been using two aerosol counters to aid its investigations. Specific studies with the units include: a) evaluating total and elemental size efficiencies of dust filtration units: b) characterizing the dust particulate cloud from different mining operations: and c) determining dust transportation characteristics.

Britain's first pressurised water reactor (PWR) Nuclear Power Station is now under construction at Sizewell on the Suffolk coast. A linear cut-off wall was proposed to ensure that the drawdown of water to some 14m below sea level in the overlying sands during construction of the new power station would not affect the existing adjacent nuclear power station. The low permeability cut-off wall was constructed by diaphragm walling techniques by excavating a continuous deep trench supported by bentonite mud and then dis­placing the bentonite by a plastic concrete to form the "impermeable" membrane. The paper describes the automated digging apparatus ("Hydrofraise") with the extensive support facilities required to achieve completion within programme, control methods used to obtain the high vertical tolerances and the properties of the plastic concrete and the production plant used for its production.

The thermodynamic program is similar to previous mine ventilation programs but has been expanded to consider the compressibility of air. The thermodynamic program does consider: 1) air density variations, 2) humidity changes, 3) intake, exhaust, and underground fans, 4) heat transfer between rock and air, 5) refrigeration of heating plants, both surface and underground, and 6) heat generated by equipment, both diesel and electric. 110st of the compressibility factors are handled in the branch calculations. The field survey necessary to supply-data for this program is quite similar to the basic base and leap-frog pair of stations method used with most incompressible mine ventilation programs. The thermodynamic program is a complete package of ventilation network analysis which can provide mine management with good operational control and planning of mine ventilation systems.

As part of an initiative to improve value in mining, CEMI is developing a handbook on best practice in mine design. Various formats were examined, and of these, the wiki was selected as being most suitable. Being web-based, its global reach and capability of being continuously updated allows the wiki to evolve as new knowledge is generated, and to capture the diversity of experience of practitioners in the mining industry. While wikis have many advantages in terms of organizing content and searching, their ability to be edited by users is often seen as a negative characteristic for quality control. To ensure reliability of information content, author attribution, specific authorship models, and a peer review process have been implemented, in addition to the standard version tracking capability of wikis. The first phase of the project concentrates on topics related to underground hard rock mine design. The scope will be expanded to cover other aspects of mining as the project matures. Strategic partnerships with various organizations, such as the CIM, and CANMET, are being formed to provide a wide range of seed material to stimulate growth of the site. www.minedesignwiki.org

At the last Annual Meeting of the Institute, Dr. C. V. Corless sketched the potential mineral wealth of Canada so clearly, graphically and with-all so entertainingly that one's imagination was fired with the promise held out to future generations for the tremendous expansion of the mining industry in the Dominion. Posterity will undoubtedly witness the fruit of much of the geographical search and survey that is now carried on by our government mining departments. Year after year the work advances, slowly but surely, new areas are . explored, older areas are surveyed in detail, the information being compiled in maps and reports of incalculable value to the prospector, the engineer and the general public. The immensity of the task of exploring, geologically, the outlying portions of the country, with the ultimate view of making valuable mineral discoveries, may be visualized from a study of Dr. Corless' paper and the subsequent discussion which took place and one becomes impressed with the fact that three-quarters or more of the problem can be included under the word "transportation". For instance Dr. Corless said, "The few geological explorers who have penetrated to these remoter regions . . . . . . have as a rule been compelled to stick closely to canoe routes,"; Dr. Goodwin remarked, "This barren Laurentian granite, which is put down on the maps as covering the greater part of this area, is the best guess the geologist could make from travelling along watercourses Within the next few years . . . . . . the Timiskaming and Northern Ontario railway will undoubtedly be extended to James Bay . . . . . . In order that we may be prepared for the probable influx of prospectors when transportation facilities to tidewater are provided, I think all available information on this district should be gathered together in handy form." All three-Corless, Goodwin and Cole-emphasize the well-known fact that explorers, geologists and prospectors working in new country must stick to the watercourses and that transportation by rail, road or water has always been the all-important deciding factor in facilitating the exploration and development of remote districts. Dr. Corless did, however, suggest other means of transportation in stating, "The aeroplane will be of assistance in future study of some parts of these remote areas."

Introduction The property of Normetal Mining Corporation is in Desmeloizes township, Quebec, twelve miles north of Dupuy on the main line of the Canadian National railway from Quebec city co Cochrane, Ontario. The ore bodies occur within a band of highly sheared and sericitized agglomerate which strikes N.60°W. and clips 82° north. Along a zone 1,000 feet or more in length and of variable width, the agglomerate has been replaced by copper, zinc, and iron sulphides, with copper usually predominant on the hanging-wall side and pyrite replaced in part by sphalerite on the footwall. A northsouth diabase dyke cuts through the ore zone near its east end. The Normetal mill produces a copper concentrate and a zinc concentrate which are shipped, respectively, to Noranda, Que., and Newcastle, Penn., U.S.A., for further treatment. The present paper deals with the milling of ore from what is known as No. 3 orebody. This is a lenticular body of high-zinc ore lying co the east of the diabase dyke, along the line of strike of the main ore zone, which extends westward from the dyke. On its northern side, No. 3 orebody is in contact along most of its length with a narrow band of copper ore which is highly oxidized.

To enable ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) to be used on an equal weight basis with nitroglycerine explosives, smaller diameter bore holes became necessary with consequent modifications to drill steel and burden on holes. Detonation of AN-FO in small diameter holes proved successful both with and without primer charges but some alterations were required to adapt anoloders to the smaller holes.Important factors in training all operators in the new charging method were the retention of improved fragmentation, avoidance of excessive overbreak and keeping wall rock dilution to an absolute minimum. The successful storage of ammonium nitrate in climatic conditions with daily temperature fluctuations above and below the critical 90°F has been achieved.INTRODUCTIONTechnical aspects of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-Fa) blasting agent are well covered in recent literature. This paper deals primarily with the manner of its introduction as the principal explosive underground at Great Boulder Gold Mines Ltd. and with the many problems encountered in the process. Following reasonably successful experimental firings in June 1962', using granular ammonium nitrate and an anoloder, permission was granted by theWestern Australian Mines Department to carry out test work in selected areas of the mine. The permit allowed for fuse firing only, and for a mixture of AN-Fa containing between 5t and 6 per cent fuel oil, with an adequate primer.The use of AN-Fa on an equal weight basis with nitroglycerine explosives, involved smaller diameter holes with alteration to ground burden and modification to drill steel.Initial tests indicated that it was apparent that AN-Fa could not replace gelignite on an equal weight basis if the...
