DC plasma-arc technology using a hollow graphite electrode (cathode) has been successfully implemented in the primary metallurgical industry in South Africa up to the 30 MW scale. Mintek has applied its expertise base, established over the past fifteen years, to testing the treatment of metallurgical wastes such as carbon- and stainless-steel plant dusts, lead- and zinc-containing slags, and residues from the base-metal industry. Favourable results have been achieved, and disposable products were produced. The evaluation of numerous wastes indicates that recovery of zinc as metal gives the best economic return from these sources. Direct recovery via a splash condenser or electrolytic zinc extraction from fume are the two preferred alternatives under review. In both instances dehalogenation is an important issue, but can be achieved by suitable treatment processes. The Enviroplas technology provides a flexible, commercially viable approach to the treatment of a wide variety of wastes. Mintek, together with its associate Pyromet CC, are installing a plasma- arc pilot-plant facility with both an ISP lead-splash condenser of about 5 t/d condensed zinc capacity and a combustion chamber to burn zinc vapour to zinc oxide. This will demonstrate the suitability of the Enviroplas technology for treating specific metallurgical wastes, so that customized industrial plants can be engineered based on large-scale testwork.

Carbonaceous gold ores containing gold dispersed in sulfides are refractory to cyanidation because: (1 ) the carbonaceous materials adsorb gold during cyanidation; (2) a portion of the gold s so finely dispersed in the sulfide mineral lattice as to preclude contact with cyanide solution; and (3) a portion of the gold is chemically combined with carbonaceous material. Techniques which have been used to treat these ores are: (1) roasting or chemical oxidation to decompose sulfide and carbonaceous materials; (2) flotation to reject carbon; (3) the use of kerosene or other reagents to passivate the adsorptive carbon compounds; (4) carbon or resin in pulp; (5) flotation of a bulk concentrate which is treated by one of the above methods; and (6) the use of chelating agents which have a stronger affinity for gold than the activated carbon in the ore.

"Campbell mines has been in operation since 1948. Part of the process consists of roasting of a flotation concentrate which contains arsenopyrite.At present operation level the milling rate averages about 850 t.p.d. and about 48 t.p.d. of concentrate is roasted. The gas emissions at present contain between 3 and 3.5 t.p.d. of arsenic trioxide, about2 - 2.5 t.p.d. of particulate matter and between 19 - 25 t.p.d. of sulphur dioxide. The particulate is extremely fine calcine dust and it assays about 4 oz. Of gold per ton.Until 1974 the gas was discharged untreated through a 125' stack.UntreatedThe decision was made in 1972 to erect a gas treatment plant, construction ran through 1973 and operation began in 1974. The cost of the installation was about 1.3 million dollars.On investigation the process technology, it was apparent that the plant operated by giant Yellowknife for the same purpose was the model we should study. I would like to acknowledge the fine cooperation we had from giant, the plant that emerged is very similar to theirs and incorporates some improvements suggested by them and based on their operating experience.The plant is designed to remove arsenic and solid dust and it has no provisions to remove sulphur dioxide.We depend upon the 125' stack to assure adequate dilution. Because of the nearby airport the stack cannot exceed 125'. A stack burner is provided that can ""y used to heat the stack gas and carry it higher into the atmosphere when there is an inversion condition.The removal of arsenic from hot gas is fairly simple. The sublimation point is about 425°f, a few degrees above this point the arsenic is a gas and a few degrees below it condenses into a solid form. The arsenic could have been removed by simply dropping the temperature below the condensation point and collecting all the solids in a baghouse. This would have removed the possibility of recovering the gold in the calcine dust and would have produced an impure and more bulky arsenic material to be placed in safe storage. The decision was made to collect the solid dust in a hot electrostatic precipitator operating above the sublimation point and subsequently lower the temperature below the condensation point and collect the arsenic in a baghouse."

The present communication records the results of a research investigation conducted in the Porcupine Gold Mines in Timmins, Onto. Soon after silicosis became a compansable disease in Ontario under the Workmen's Compensation Act in 1926, the attention of mine operators and physicians was drawn sharply to the prevalence and importance of this condition in the mining industry. A number of examining centres were established in Northern Ontario by the Workmen's Compensation Board, and the yearly X-ray examination of miners was made compulsory.Although working conditions were soon improved, the mining industry realized that they were confronted by a problem demanding basic research for its final solution. The late Sir Frederick Banting had, for a number of years, been interested in silicosis, and it was upon his suggestion that an experimental investigation was undertaken at the McIntyre-Porcupine Mines Ltd., Schumacher, Ont., in November, 1932. A preliminary report of this investigation was published in 1937 by Denny, Robson and Irwin and a further report by the same authors in 1939.Accepting the theory that silica exerts its injurious effect upon animal tissue through a slow transformation into silicic acid in the presence of body fluids; these authors assumed that if the solubility of the silicious material retained in the lung could be sufficiently reduced, the usual fibrotic response would be modified or would not occur. A search was therefore undertaken for some non-toxic compound that would fulfil this purpose. After investigating ma:qy substances, Denny and Robson discovered in 1936 that the presence of small amounts of aluminum powder almost completely inhibited the solubility of silicious material in vitro. An intensive study of the mechanism involved later showed that the reduction in solubility was due chiefly to a coating of the silica particle with a thin film of a gelatinous hydrated alumina which on drying formed the crystalline alpha aluminum monohydrate boehmite (AI203.H20). The presence of this absorbed layer on the surface of the quartz was indicated by -staining it with aurin (ammonium salt of aurin tricarboxylic acid) and proved by Germer and Storks by means of electron diffraction patterns.Inhalation experiments with animals were at once begun, using pure quartz dust with and without aluminum powder. As requested by my fellow members I shall endeavour to read a paper on the Treatment of the Auriferous Sulphide Ores of Kalgoorlie from a metallurgical standpoint. Before going into the subject it will be necessary for me to make some slight explanations. As most of you are aware many of our London friends holding interests in some of these mines think it necessary that their doings should be shrouded in mystery. The result of this is that in some cases it is impossible to get any official figures from the mines for this paper. I must ask you not to lose sight of the fact that in treating the sulphide ores of the Kalgoorlie mines we had absolutely no data to start on, and that to-day. we are just beginning to get a fair grip of tbe subject; and though very high extractions were announced when the first plants were started on sulphide ore, it was well known that this was only to maintain the public confidence in the mines to allow time to make necessary adjustments; and, as showing the advance made in the treatment of the ore, I notice several of the mines have published the results of the final or re-treatment of the residues of their first sulphide treatment. I have also had the opportunity afforded me of thoroughly sampling the residues of several of the principal mines, and find the results as now published absolutely correct.

Seventy years after the start of the Industrial Revolution in Great Britain, as reckoned from Arkwright's water frame patented in 1769, there was a significant development of the metallurgical industry in Virginia. In Britain, crucible steel had been rediscovered by Benjamin Huntsman in 17~0, and this made spring and tool steel more generally available. The metal-turning, screw-cutting lathe, including the basic principles recognized in today's engine lathe, was developed by Henry Maudslay about 1797. Wrought iron, as manufactured by Henry Cort's process patented in 1784, was readily available. Richard Trevithick's highpressure steam locomotive had met its test on the Pennydarren tramroad in 1804, and George Stephenson had built his famous Rocket, along with several other locomotives, at Newcastle around 1828. Puddling furnaces and a rolling mill had been placed in operation at the Tredegar Iron Works in Glyn Sirhowy, Monmouthshire, Wales, in 1807. In the United States, expanding commerce and a growing population resulted in continuing development from the Chesapeake to Virginia's Blue Ridge, and this demanded improved means of transportation. Ore deposits rich in hematite had been found in Virginia's Piedmont during the Colonial period, and a number of blast furnaces now dotted that area. The products of these operations were mostly pots, kettles, stove parts and like items for local trade. The James River and Kanawha Canal was incorporated in January 1785. Its eastern leg, winding along the slope of the high bluffs overlooking the river, was completed about 1800. About two dozen railroads were chartered in Virginia between 1830 and 1837. With expanding population and steady industrial development came a need for metallurgical products. Throughout the eastern United States, numerous metallurgical enterprises sprang up, and many of these flourished. The purpose of this article is to outline the development of one Southern metallurgical company, the Tredegar Iron Works, which was to have a significant impact on the industrial development of Virginia and the fighting of the American Civil War. Although the Tredegar Iron Works no longer exists, remnants of the early operations have been restored, and the current status of the site is also presented.

"This study has been developed to illustrate the trend and pattern of distribution applying to the quantities and costs of the fossil fuels used, and the related amounts of electricity generated, in the thermal segment of the Canadian electric utility industry.Traditionally, Canada's requirements for electric energy have been preponderantly met by hydraulic power. The need for augmented supplies of thermally generated power has mainly developed since the close of World War Il-in an era that has seen drastic decline in the production of indigenous coal and buoyant expansion in the supply of oil and natural gas. Although coal currently is faced with serious competition from the fluid fuels, the utility industry in particular promises an advancing market for coal, because of its abundant resource, at prices less likely to show sharp increase. For Canada as a whole, this trend has been progressive since 1959, and, unbelievable as it may now seem, the extent of the advance by 1975, particularly in Ontario and the Prairie Provinces, may well be as much, or even more, than the present rate of consumption for all purposes.The text and the tables and charts are arranged to focus attention on: the growth of thermal genera ting capability; the historical trend in consumption of fuel and the related production of electricity; patterns of distribution by types of fuel and thermal capacity; the relationship of steam to other sources of thermal capacity; and the quantities, costs and related percentages of electricity generated by types and kinds of fuel used, both regionally and provincially."

Since the last occasion on which I spoke to you on this subject there has been a considerable increase in the mechanical ventilation of Western Australian mines.The following table compares the figures for 1939 with those of 1941. The type of fan most commonly used is the limit load fan. On account of its higher mechanical efficiency it has very largely superseded the multivane fan with forward curved blades.Two fans of the propeller type are in use and these have given very satisfactory service. This type of fan also has a high mechanical efficiency particularly at the correct duty for maximum efficiency.The maximum efficiencies obtainable from the various types are, for "multivane" 670/0, for "limit load" 75%, and' for aerovane 7810/0.References to propeller fans with variable pitch have appeared in the technical press, but no detailed d~scription has been issued. The advantages of these fans for mine ventilation are not obvious. An aeroplane is required to operate over a wide range of duties, while the speed of the motor for maximum efficiency is pl'actically constant. In such circumstances the propeller can be adapted to the particular work it has to do by varying the pitch of the blades. In a mine the speed of the fan can be varied to suit.the conditions, and it would appear that variable pitch is not necessary while there is a reasonable range of fans to choose from.The question of the correct position for the fan still comes in for considerable discussion. Exhausting fans at the surface have the support of time and custom, and in many cases this represents the only reasonable arrangement. Such fans should be fitted with an evase, especially in the case of fans with a high outlet velocity such as the aerovane types.It is claimed that there are advantages in having the fan at the surface where it is readily available for inspection and maintenance. Experience has shown that these advantages are more apparent than real. Fans will run for long periods with no attention other than occasional greasing and cleaning, and modern electric motors will run without attention for very long periods.In some instances the expense of a power cable to take current to the fan may be saved by placing it on the surface, but in the majority of cases...

IN brief, this is the story of an attempt to Americanize a process originally developed in Europe. The story will be recited in two sections, the first dealing with the process as developed by the European engineers; the second containing the improvements and modifications of American origin, together with some details of the operating results of the unit as finally assembled. Developments in other directions in this same field have not, up to the present, pointed out an economic future for the process, therefore our record here is largely a report of development progress. Whether some particularly favorable location will be found at some future time for a commercial installation cannot as yet be fore-told. The project is now at a standstill. The peculiar tools of the electrometallurgist should be of great interest to the zinc smelter. The low thermal efficiency of the zinc retort, its comparatively small-scale unit and its intermittent cycle as it stood in 1925, should make this art a particularly fertile field for the electric fur-nace. Yet in spite of years of work recorded in volumes of literature, and an expenditure of large sums of money, there is not a single electrothermic zinc smelter operating anywhere in the world. In this industry the electric furnace plays only a secondary part today.

Gold deposits in Interior Alaska are commonly coincident in time and space with reduced, mid-Cretaceous granitoids. The True North deposit of the Fairbanks district is several km from such granitoids, but yields mineralization ages indistinguishable from the Fort Knox granite-hosted deposit. True North, however, resembles sediment-hosted epithermal Au, demonstrating the variability of intrusion-related Au deposits in metamorphic rocks. The True North deposit (14M tons at 1.5 gpt) is hosted within a carbonaceous thrust complex separating eclogite facies from amphibolite facies rocks, located > 5 km from mineralized granite outcrops. The ores contain anomalous Sb, As, and Hg (stibnite is the most common sulfide) with ankerite-sericite alteration in steep NE-striking ?feeder? shears and low angle thrust shears. Nearest hornfelsed rocks are located > 1 km away, and across several high-angle faults. Fluid inclusion data indicates trapping temperatures of ~250C from low-density, low-salinity fluids at P < 0.5 kb. Au was originally present as solid solution in sulfides; minable ores are restricted to the oxidized upper 100 m of the deposit. The considerable differences between this deposit and the temporally equivalent Fort Knox intrusion-hosted deposit indicate no one description adequately characterizes this deposit type.

Arrow Energy NL has been operating a number of coal seam gas wells in the Darling Downs region of Queensland. At the time of writing this paper, the region is enduring an extended drought period. The local aquifers are depleting and have not been significantly recharged in over a decade. The local communities (both rural and townships) are struggling to obtain water. Currently, coal seam gas (CSG) operators (under licence) draw water from the coal seams as part of the gas production process and the majority of operators choose to evaporate this water, as it is characteristically brackish to saline in quality and as such must be contained. Although the water produced from one CSG operator is not sufficient to drought-proof the greater area of the Darling Downs, there is potential to supply smaller local areas and contribute to the sustainability of these communities. This paper outlines the work completed by Arrow and its local community partners on the Darling Downs to date, and discusses the application of the produced formation water for:stock watering in feedlots, as a feedstock for coal washing, as a potable water supply for Dalby, as an agricultural water supply for cotton farming, and use as a medium for growing salt-water fin fish.

The Ridgeway gold mine has been an enigma of the international underground hard rock community for nearly 20 years. It nearly didn’t eventuate as it was more than 500 m below a farmer’s paddock in Central New South Wales when the exploration team, looking for open pit deposits, got a sniff on its last attempt and then drilled the high-grade discovery hole. It took separate studies to find an economic mining approach. Newcrest, then a mid-tier mining company, took the venture that set it on a path of growth and built what was to become the backbone of the company for the next 15 years.The initial mining method was sublevel caving (SLC) for the upper 300 m of the orebody. The nameplate production rate for the SLC was 4 Mt/a, which was reached in June 2002 shortly after the commissioning of the materials handling system. The ultimate production rate was subsequently lifted to around 6 Mt/a through a series of innovative and efficiency initiatives. In June 2007, approval was granted for the development of a block cave (BC) operation to extract the ore reserve situated immediately below the existing SLC operations, Ridgeway Deeps. The BC was designed at approximately 6 Mt/a to match the concentrator and a systematic improvement process through the entire underground system again saw delivery rates consistently around 10 Mt/a.In line with the production rate increases, Newcrest was also committed to advancing caving knowledge through a number of targeted research and development experiments and new processes. These were primarily related to improving cave ore recovery through systematic draw marker trials, cave propagation through preconditioning techniques with associated monitoring systems. New technologies were also developed to improve the safety and efficiency of the mine through data collection, cave establishment techniques, production dispatching and autonomous loading.CITATION:Dunstan, G, 2016. Since 1995, when "freeze lining" refractory systems were introduced to the ferroalloy industry, they have gained in popularity, due to the freeze lining?s reputation for reliability, safety, and the contribution it makes to profitability. As with many popular and effective technologies, however, the freeze lining has spawned low-cost pretenders that claim the "freeze lining" name. On the surface they appear to contain some of the components of the technology, such as thermally conductive materials, but they fail to incorporate all of the principles that define a true Freeze Lining. The term "freeze lining" refers to the refractory system?s ability to maintain a temperature profile that is low enough to freeze a layer of process material on its hot face, which insulates the refractory and prevents direct contact with molten metal and slag. In doing so, the common wear mechanisms found in the submerged arc furnace - chemical attack, erosion, and thermal stress - can be prevented. These wear mechanisms are all related to high temperature; thus, they are prevented by maintaining low temperatures. Certain refractory properties and design concepts are absolutely necessary for the lining system to function as a true Freeze Lining. The paper explains these requirements and why they are important - the Truth of freeze linings - and further explains why systems that ignore one or more of these requirements cannot claim to be freeze linings, thereby exposing the Myths.

"The tungsten-bismuth-molybdenum deposit in southwestern New Brunswick occurs in greisenized and silicified tuffite * and feldspar porphyry in and adjacent to volcanic necks. The ore minerals occur as veins and veinlets and as disseminated grains in gangue. These minerals can be grouped into three assemblages. Assemblage 1 consists of oxides and phosphates of W, Ti, Fe, Nb, Sn, Ta and rare-earth elements, with the main minerals being deposited in the sequence wolframite, rutile, cassiterite. Assemblage 2 consists of arsenopyrite, molybdenite and bismuth, and assemblage 3 of sulphides with minor cassiterite and arsenopyrite. Sphalerite is the main sulphide mineral, but it contains minute inclusions of copper-tin- and indium-bearing minerals. Textural relations suggest that most of the elements can be recovered from this ore by conventional mineral beneficiation and extraction methods, but a variety of techniques must be employed. It is expected that the wolframite and molybdenite can be recovered satisfactorily, but poor recoveries are expected for bismuth and cassiterite. A sphalerite concentrate can be readily obtained by flotation, but it would contain a wide variety of elements. It is suggested that leaching be used to recover the bismuth and the elements in the sphalerite concentrate."

There is a growing interest among transportation planners to make more use of the subsurface to preserve the landscape and make transportation more efficient and economical. At the present time, utilization of the underground for transportation facilities is severely restrained by the adverse environmental impact and high construction costs. However, recent studies performed by the United States Department of Transportation indicate that, in spite of such problems, the volume of underground construction has significantly increased during recent years and projections point to continuation of these trends(1). It is estimated that the total volume of transportation tunnel construction will exceed $4 billion in this decade. This level of Investment justifies a significant research program. Due to the common interest in transportation tunnels and to the similarities of problems encountered during their construction, the tunneling research activities of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are closely coordinated with the programs other agencies of the U. S. Department of Transportation DOT); specifically, the Federal Railroad Administration (PRA) and the Urban mass Transportation Administration (UMTA). The FHWA is responsive to the particular needs of these agencies but will benefit from the research results obtained also. In 1971, the Office of Secretary, DOT, initiated plans for an overall coordination of the DOT, FICA, UMTA, and FHWA tunneling research activities. The objectives of this effort have been to reduce tunneling costs by 30% and to increase the rate of excavation by 200% within 10 years. Foreword The office of the Supervisory Mining Engineer, a branch of the l. Federal Government, is financially interested in no oil company and has no stock to sell. This office, however, is deeply interested in the proper and efficient development of Canada&apos;s natural resources. The people of Canada are interested in the petroleum development in Turner Valley for two principal reasons: As represented by the Department of the Interior, they are the largest owners of petroleum and natural-gas rights in the field; As a nation, they are vitally interested in the development of petroleum and natural gas as a national asset, and therefore, also, in all productive property, no matter who directly controls the leases. As has been stated by Mr. Charles C. Ross, Supervisory Mining Engineer, "The Department, being responsible for the administration of these public resources, necessarily requires regulations to protect them from abuse by lessees. Our portion of this responsibility is to record a complete history of all drilling operations and to see that proper drilling methods are adopted to prevent damage and wanton waste of the valuable natural resources under discussion." Not only does our position necessitate an impartial and a judicial viewpoint, but, being day by day in touch with all operations in the western provinces, we are uniquely situated to comprehend both individual and general problems.

The Port of Shekou is situated at Shenzhen Bay on the east side of the Pearl River estuary. Geological condition of the site is quite complicated. On top of the sea bed, there is a layer of soft silt 8 - 14 m thick. Under the soft silt, there are intercalated layers of sand, silt and clay. Average surface elevation of the underlying undulatory weathered bed rock is about - 20 m, with a variation of about 10 m. In certain locations, the weathered bed rock is covered with a layer of silt 3 - 4 m thick. This paper gives brief account of three types of wharf structures which are of particular interest, constructed in the last few years: (A) Platform type wharf structure with frontal sheet piling and steel raking pile in the rear; (B) Relieving Platform type structure with steel sheet piling and inclined anchoring HP pile ; (C) Steel pipe pile row supported apron added to a marginal quay. Average construction time of a deepwater berth is about six months.

Cement in 1975 indeed did operate in an unfriendly environment. World recession, escalating costs, fuel crises, reduced product demand . . . . all led to market conditions detrimental to industry profit margins and investment re turns. During the year plant utilizations fell, break-even points were raised, and competitive moves introduced to move built up inventory levels. A number of cement plants were temporarily taken out of production to help alleviate specific situations. Meanwhile, under resultant financial pressure, several companies omitted dividend payments, changed their top executives, and reorganized and reduced staff overheads. It was a difficult year for cement, yet a much more ominous note was sounded in permanent plant closings. Four more cement operations were shut down in 1975; to date in 1976 we know for sure of three additional plant closings, while rumour has it that at least one more may not be in production by year-end. The somber feature is found within the descriptions of the closed facilities, and in the stated reasons for their being taken out of cement manufacture.

Old mine workings are found throughout the Western United Sates on lands administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service and private lands. Some of these mine workings date back to the late 1800s. There may be as many as 100,000 sites on lands administered by the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. The U.S. Department of the Interior has worked with the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and western state governments to identify and prioritize these sites on Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service administered lands. This presentation will discuss the accomplishments we have made to date to clean up inactive and abandoned mine sites, focusing primarily on lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management.
