The single track North Strathfield Rail Underpass (NSRU) consists of a dive structure either end of a 148 m long driven tunnel skewed under three live railway tracks. The tunnel is 8 m high, 9 m wide, with a horseshoe profile, excavated by full face using a road header. Ground cover varied between 2.5 m to 3.5 m. Settlements were 5 mm to 15 mm (the latter due to a dyke). A one pass synthetic fibre reinforced shotcrete lining was installed (no lattice girders or steel sets were used). A system of automated robotic total stations was used to provide real time monitoring of the rail track and associated ground formation. Construction of the Northeast Boundary Tunnel (NEBT), the last leg of the Anacostia River Tunnel System on DC Water’s Clean Rivers Project, started in September 2018 and was completed in April 2021. The 26-foot-bore earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) mined 26,737 feet at elevations between 80 to 160 feet belowground. Approximately 55% of the tunnel was cut through lower predominantly coarse-grained facies identified as the Cretaceous Patuxent Formation (undifferentiated) (PTX), and the remainder was cut through upper predominantly overconsolidated fine-grained plastic material facies identified as the Cretaceous Patapsco/Arundel Formation (P/A). Mixed face conditions were encountered in the transition from the P/A to the PTX and vice versa. This paper reviews the performance of the TBM that mined the NEBT through several unique challenges, including 8,000 feet of tunneling under the heavily developed Rhode Island Avenue corridor, major sensitive structures, cast iron water distribution mains, and other sensitive utilities.

The Northeast Tripp Slide is one of the larger slope failures that can be attributed to open pit mining. It is a 11.7 million cubic meter (15.3 x l0 6 yd3) wedge failure created by two thick gouge-filled fault zones whose intersection plunges into the Tripp pit at 13°. One unique aspect of this failure is that the slide is now stable despite having moved an estimated 8.5m (28 ft.) towards the pit and having reached a maximum overall velocity of 2lmmlday (0.07 ft/day). The slide started to fail in 1968, accelerated until mining in the slide's toe area was halted in April 1970, then began to decelerate. With the cessation of mining in the toe area, rubblized rock sloughed into the pit bottom which added weight to the failures toe constraints and began the stabilization process. Measurements from a network of survey stations revealed a correlation between the slide's velocity and heavy precipitation. Runoff water accumulating in the tension cracks is believed responsible for this correlation. Moreover, the survey net measurements showed that during the failure's last stage the vertical component of the slide's movement greatly increased. It is proposed that this settling was caused by plastic-like flowage of the clay gouge underlying the failure The fault zone's effective shear strength was estimated by a back- analysis on the wedge's geometry and by performing direct shear tests. The tests, performed on cores taken from samples that were collected on the failure, yielded a residual shear strength of: cohesion 0.61 kg/cm2 (8.7 lb/in2), and a friction angle of 9.6°. This residual shear strength was near1y equal to the back-calculated strength indicating that the controlling fault's effective strength was essentially the same as the residual shear strength of the gouge filling

The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District’s (MMSD)’s challenges of basement flooding and wet weather sewer overflows are being creatively addressed with the Northwest Side Relief Sewer tunnel. The $132 million, 20-foot diameter, and37,740 feet long conveyance and storage tunnel excavation in dolomite at depths reaching 165 feet below ground surface has been successfully completed within13 months in April 2004. This paper includes Owner’s perspective on the overall project, and the design and construction details by the Designer and the Contractor. The project contract documents included a comprehensive Geotechnical Data Report and the Geotechnical Baseline Report.

"The lack of notch ductility in structural steel in general, and in ship plate in particular, has been the object of widespread attention in the metallurgical world since the spectacular collapse of the ill-fated S.S. Schenectady in 1943. Numerous investigations have been carried out, many new tests have been developed, and a vast amount of useful data has been published, with the result that our knowledge is now far more advanced than it was at the time of this disaster. Interest has focused largely on the medium strength steels, and the various factors which cause a normally ductile steel to behave in a brittle manner in the presence of a notch and at relatively .low temperatures have been thoroughly studied.The literature available on high-tensile steels, however, is less extensive and the present paper is intended to supplement this information. Notch toughness tests have been carried out, at the request of the R.C.N., on a high-tensile manganese steel in the form of commercial ship plate. One of the newer tests, the tear test, and the Charpy V-notch impact test, were used to examine the characteristics of plate for the construction of an ice-breaker. About 250 plates, mainly in the thickness range from 11,4 in. to 1 % in., were tested. An an-alysis of the results obtained is presented, certain aspects of the tear test are discussed, and the correlation between the two types of test is studied. On the basis of information available from casualty ships, the plates, with few exceptions, were considered to be satisfactory."

The Nova Ni-Cu-Co Operation, located in the Fraser Range of Western Australia, commenced commercial production in July 2017 only five years after discovery. Owned by Independence Group NL (IGO), the operation has successfully ramped up over an accelerated schedule and currently deploying leading technologies. This paper begins with a description of the Nova Operation, and its journey to achieve full production in such a short time frame. It includes discussions on development and production design, selection of fixed plant infrastructure, and the features challenges of running a low-pressure primary ventilation circuit. The paper also discusses key technologies that have improved overall safety for the underground workforce, and improved operational efficiencies. Investigations continue into the implementation of further technological applications for safety and productivity enhancements. This paper also discusses the findings from a study into transitioning from a diesel to an all-electric underground mining fleet, based on a review of Nova if it were to be developed today with the current EV offerings. The study indicates compelling savings will be available to future mines when considering development design, project schedule, capital outlay and operational savings, and the ‘next Nova’ is expected to be all electric.

Energy & Densification Systems (EDS) has developed patented new technology crushing/milling equipment. The EDS Multishaft Mill is a compact vertical mill – utilising high-speed impacts to break down particles with large reduction ratios, low energy consumption and improved liberation. The milling action combines several processes to provide a multitude of output products to satisfy various specifications. Comminution often accounts for more than 60% of the total power consumption on a mine. Two of the key problems to be solved in comminution is to bring down the specific energy required to reduce particle sizes; and to improve liberation or improve the efficiency of the beneficiation and recovery of the required elements. The EDS Mill has shown extensive improvements in both these areas with energy efficiencies up to 75% better than conventional milling equipment and improving liberation beyond the standard beneficiation processes. Conventional comminution equipment requires massive, heavy parts to be moved or rotated, consuming a lot of energy in doing so and not inputting that energy into the breakage of particles. In the EDS Mill, ramping up the relatively small shafts to speed is all that is required. Once at speed, the momentum, together with the minimal amount of constant drive required, means that the energy can be transmitted directly and efficiently into breaking down the particles. The high-speed impacts allow for a shattering effect of the particles and this quickly generates a high ratio of fines. Furthermore, the single impact force breaks particles in a very different manner to conventional compressive force breakage. With compressive force breakage, the particle breaks from point to point. With high-speed impact force breakage, the force tends to migrate through the weakest areas of the particle, which tend to be the mineral boundaries. X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry (XRF) is used at various stages of gold refining. Initially, incoming impure gold is analysed for deleterious elements such as As, Cd, Hg, Se, and Te. Based on the levels of these impurities the material can be returned to the client or accepted for refining. XRF is also used to determine the metal concentrations after the impure gold has been melted and sampled. This information is used to assist the final Fire Assay determination of gold and silver. An energy dispersive XRF is used to determine the end point of chlorination refining step.

"This research is based on PANSTEEL 120t steelmaking converter technology to have the quantitative description of the time needed in uniform mixing of molten steel in the converter with the computer. In present work, the numerical simulation approach is used to analyze oxygen lance nozzle, the flow condition of oxygen and flow status of molten steel in the converter. The various oxygen jet flows that come out from different angles and the flow status of all kinds of jet flows in the converter have also been simulated. All of the simulation parameters are based on the specifically practical conditions according to the physical conditions of PANSTEEL 120 t steelmaking converter. Through numerical simulation, the angle parameter of the oxygen lance nozzle is 16 °. The optimized oxygen lance 536-16 has a good performance in industrial application. This kind of phenomenon shows that the ways and processes of numerical simulation in this research are right.IntroductionThe oxygen lance system is the significant process in semi-steel making converter. It's related to whether the converter or even the whole system can function well. While in actual production, many problems emerge in the process of using the former oxygen lance, such as re-drying, slopping, high lance position, dead burning and even blowing out. In continuous fast-paced process, the unstableness of oxygen lance will lead to speed droop or even stop pouring. Analysis shows that all these problems are not only related to the raw materials but also the design of oxygen lance. Bad oxygen lance's scorification kinetics condition and low content of FeOn in early slag are the direct factors that we cannot easily control in steelmaking at present [l]. Therefore, the good scorification kinetics condition which is related to nozzle has good influence on BOF steel making."

The O.K. deposit occurs within a belt of cherts and spilitised basic volcanics near the western margin of the Hodgkinson Province. The tabular to lenticular shape and gross conformability of the ore bodies; the common occurrence of colloform, framboidal and banded textures in the ores; the lack of significant alteration adjacent to the massive ore horizons and the apparent restriction of stockwork mineralization to the foot-wall side of the massive ore zone at the O.K. mine, all favour a syngenetic origin for the massive sulfide bodies. Furthermore, the micro- structural evidence suggests that the ores have undergone the same deformational history as the country rocks. The invariable association of the ores with spilites; the S isotope values and Co-Ni contents of the pyrites, together with the primitive metal assemblage (Fe, Cu, minor Zn) strongly favour a basic magmatic source for the sulfides. It is suggested-that the sulfides were probably precipitated sub aqueous- ly during a hiatus in volcanic activity. The O.K. deposit is of the cupreous pyrite variety, but unlike other well known occurrences of this type, it does not con- stitute part of an ophiolite complex. The Obuasi Mine has been in operation for the past 100 years. Within this period a host of mining methods have been employed during its various changing phases. The causes for the changes are multiple, ranging from orebody capability, dynamics, technology, safety, economics, production levels, geotechnical, etc. Mining methods applied have also ranged from timber square setts, conventional cut-and-fill, shrinkage stoping, sublevel caving, mechanised cut-and-fill, longitudinal and transverse open stoping, and lately longitudinal retreat mining method (LRMM).The Obuasi Mine has a world class underground resource potential of about 27 million ounces. A third of this is in reserve. The orebody is subvertical, with multiple lodes and with widths ranging from 1.5 - 40 m. It stretches along 8.5 km N/S strike. A cursory statistical analysis on the various resource ore widths show a higher percentage (60 per cent) of the resource being within the range of about 1.5 - 10 m. Thus a high proportion of the resource is amenable to narrow vein mining methods. This has enhanced the choice of LRMM as an alternative method. Also, with the increasing cost of mining over time, LRMM, which eliminates expensive and time consuming footwall drives, will become far more advantageous as compared to the transverse/longitudinal open stoping methods which currently constitute about 40 per cent of the total underground production.The LRMM currently delivers about 20 per cent of the Obuasi Mine production. Plans are underway to improve total underground production from the current average of 160 000 tpm to about >180 000 tpm in the next few years and about 20 - 40 per cent more in the foreseeable future. Recoverable ounces will also increase from 26 000 to about 34 000 ounces per month. The proportion of LRMM in the business plan is also expected to increase from the current modest level to about 50 per cent. Despite its tremendous advantages in terms of economics and productivity, the method is facing some challenges during its inception. INTRODUCTION The method of heat removal during a casting process strongly influences the crystal morphology of the cast product and hence the metallurgical and mechanical properties of the solidified materials. In this paper, the Ohno Continuous Casting Process (OCC) is described in terms of the casting conditions and the type of structure observed in the cast product. Significant improvements are observed in workability, fatigue strength and corrosion resistance of castings produced by the OCC method, Ohno (1988). Applications of this technique to low melting point nonferrous metals and alloys are discussed. The feasibility of the application of this technology to high melting point materials is outlined. THE OCC PROCESS The OCC process involves delivering liquid metal into a heated mold, the temperature of which is held just above the solidification temperature of the metal to be cast. This is the key point which differentiates the OCC process from the conventional continuous casting method. A schematic illustration of the OCC process is shown in Figure 1. The Formation of a Single Crystal When the mold is heated above the solidification temperature of the metal to be cast, nucleation on the mold surface is prevented and solidification takes place only at the mold exit. The heat is extracted through the product being cast by a cooling device located near the mold outlet. Crystals are formed only at the tip of the dummy bar at the start of casting, and as the dummy bar travels away with a progressively increasing speed from the mold, the position of the solid liquid interface will align with the mold exit, producing a unidirectionally

Although bismuth mineralization is spread widely through the Lachlan Fold Belt in New South Wales, broad grouping of the various deposits can be effected on the basis of geographical and geological (age and type of associated rocks) affinities. As a result, significant concentrations of bismuth can be recognized in the Mid-Western granites, Cobar-type ore, the Yass Silurian acid volcanic belt, and the Albury, Bega, Braidwoodand Bathurst districts.In these deposits bismuth generally occurs in minor amounts associated with molybdenite, wolframite, scheelite, cassiterite, chalcopyrite, galena, magnetite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, and native gold. From this group of minerals three broadly defined associations can be recognized.I. Bi-Sn-W-Mo2. Bi-Au( -Te)3. Bi-Pb-Cu(-Au)There may be some interchangeability of these metals, as instanced by occasional Bi-Cu-W-Mo mirleralization, but pyrite and/ or arsenopyrite are usually prominent in all associations.The first two of these associations occur mainly in the form of narrow quartz veins rarely averaging more than O· 3 per cent Bi, although there is often a marked enrichment in ferruginous material in the oxidized zone.Most of these veins occur within or adjacent to granitic rocks of varying ages (principally Silurian or Devonian), although Bi-Au mineralization tends to be related to more basic igneous activity than the Bi-Sn-W-Mo association.The latter is also occasionally developed in pipes, usually coarse-grained and richer in bismuth (as at Whipstick, the principal mine in New South Wales with a production of 343 tonnes of the metal), or in lower grade, but probably larger tonnage skarn deposits. The bismuth-base metal association occurs mainly in Silurian acid volcanic sequences and may also form low grade but large tonnage deposits, such as is possibly developed at Cobar.

The conventional rare earth element (REE) industry has historically sought to develop ore deposits where geologic processes have produced mineralized zones with commercially attractive REE concentrations. These deposits are extremely uncommon, particularly in the USA. Given the criticality of these materials and the need for sustainable domestic supply, the current research seeks to leverage other autogenous processes that lead to concentrated REE resources. One such process is the generation of acid mine drainage (AMD). AMD is very common in many coal mining districts and results from the exposure and oxidation of pyrite during mining. During the generation and migration of AMD, liberated sulfuric acid mobilizes several metal ions including REEs. Treatment of AMD is required under U.S.C §1251, the Clean Water Act, and often consists of neutralization, oxidation, and metal hydroxide precipitation. To investigate the deportment of REEs during this process, a field sampling campaign was undertaken, whereby the concentration of REEs in AMD and AMD precipitates was measured directly. In the nine sites evaluated in this study, the REE concentrations of the precipitates varied from 29 to 1286 ppm with an average of 517 ppm among the sampled sites. The individual elements were enriched compared with the associated bulk Northern Appalachian (NAPP) coal material by factors ranging from 3 to 15. Furthermore, the distribution of REEs in all precipitate samples favored the heavy REEs (HREEs) when compared with traditional REE ores. This research represents the first part of multi-part research endeavor to characterize, classify, and determine the practicality of refining REEs from AMD and its by-products.

Many modern industries rely on rare earth elements (REEs) to produce products that are essential to both civil and defense applications. In a prior study (Vass et al., 2019), the authors showed that REE grades in acid mine drainage (AMD) and associated byproduct precipitates from AMD treatment (AMDp) warrant evaluation as a feedstock for REE production. The current work extends that effort through a broad survey of 141 AMD treatment sites in Northern and Central Appalachia. In this study, 185 raw AMD and 623 AMDp field samples were obtained and analyzed to assess the REE and major metal concentrations. Results show that an average of 282 μg/L and 724 g/tonne of REEs occur in AMD and AMDp respectively. Additionally, both basins contained similar distributions of REEs, and these distributions tended to favor heavy and critical REEs when compared with traditional REE ore deposits. Geospatial analysis identified a total resource of 340 tonnes stored at the 141 sites sampled in this study. While this analysis did not quantify the basin-wide REE inventory, it does indicate the impact that processing cut-off grades will have on the overall AMDp resource base.

In terms of resources of amphibole asbestos only South Africa can be considered. There are only two asbestos producing fields, one in the Northern Cape Province producing only crocidolite and one in the Eastern Transvaal producing only amosite. The banded ironstone sequence in which amphibole asbestos occurs is discussed, and the genesis of the fibre is briefly reviewed. The properties and characteristics of amphibole asbestos are discussed and compared to those of chrysotile. Approximately 300,000 tonnes of amosite and crocidolite are produced annually. Crocidolite has a potential for a fivefold increase of production, which could be sustained beyond the year 2000. An estimate of the resources of the various producing fields in South Africa is made. Mining methods are reviewed and evaluation techniques discussed.

The enthusiasm with which individuals have participated in mineral exploration in the development of this country testifies to the fact that there was once a very real probability of making a worthwhile discovery. Over the years, the discovery and subsequent exploitation of the accessible ore deposits have made the finding of new deposits progressively more difficult. Present day mineral exploration has evolved from the lone prospector with the grubstaker behind him to a very costly and complex business, involving large sums of money and a staff of experts in the fields of exploration technology. Exploration today must be carried out on a large scale to be profitable. With the involvement of large amounts of capital, there has been a good deal of interest in methods of optimization of the allocation of the resources of a firm 'engaged in mineral exploration. As a step toward this, mathematical models have been formulated which are designed to quantify those variables of mineral exploration in such a manner that they can be integrated with all phases of the firms operations so as to optimize its profit objective or more simply, to make exploration more efficient and effective.

During April 1967 a Frasch sulfur mine was placed in operation near Fort Stockton, Pecos County, in West Texas. This was the first Frasch mine to recover native sulfur from a deposit not associated with the caprock of a salt dome. Since 1967 two additional mines have been opened in west Texas, another one near the first at Fort Stockton and a third one near Orla in Culberson County (Figure 2). Recoverable reserves at the Culberson County mine are estimated to be 57,000,000 long tons of native sulfur (Zimmerman and Thomas, 1969). Total recoverable reserves at the three mines probably exceed 60,000,000 long tons, Studies of the geochemical cycle of native sulfur mineralization in test Texas indicate an origin similar to the deposits on salt domes although the geologic framework is different. A comparison of the geologic setting of the west Texas deposits with the deposits in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics as reported in the literature, reveals many similarities. I. GENERAL DISTRIBUTIONS APPEARANCE, AND RELATIONS MINING in Butte has seldom encountered covellite in commercial quantities. The notable occurrences, extending vertically and laterally perhaps several hundred feet, presented scattered, bladed lenses of this mineral in a matrix of quartz, pyrite, enargite, bornite, and chalcocite. But under the microscope covellite is seen to be widespread in the Butte ores, though in such small quantity that megascopic examination will not discover it. In early mining operations covellite was found in the Gray Rock vein, a member of the Blue vein system. As described by Sales,1 it persisted as an occasional ore mineral, associated with quartz, pyrite, tetrahedrite, bornite, chalcocite, and minor amounts of sphalerite, from the 700-ft. to the 1,200-ft. level of the East Gray Rock and Diamond mines.
