The primary objective of most comminution operations is liberation; however, mill performance is generally quantified in terms of particle size. Only recently has the use of image analysis equipment made it possible to quantify mill performance on the basis of liberation. In this investigation, a series of tests were carried out to study the effect of mill operating parameters on the liberation of sphalerite from a sphalerite/dolomite ore. The parameters studied included mill rotational speed, mill loading and ball size. The results of this work appear to indicate that sphalerite liberation is improved under conditions that promote impact breakage, while dolomite breakage is enhanced under attrition conditions.

The oxidation of iron and nickel sulphide concentrates, and the dominant sulphide minerals which comprise them, has been studied under ignition conditions using thermogravimetry (fG). The concentrates were derived from various minesites and they showed differing tendencies to ignite. Ignition temperatures ranged from 416 to 488°C and the extents of reaction, measured at 500°C, varied from 64 to 88 percent. The reactivity of the least reactivematerial was improved significantly by grinding. Particles <63/lm showed 85 percent oxidation compared with 55 - 65 percent for particles >63/lm.Examination of the individual sulphide minerals revealed that these materials also have significantly different degrees ofreactivity and are subject to particle size effects. For particles <45/lm, the ignition temperatures were as follows:ò pyrite and violarite 380 - 385°C; pentlandite 425 - 430°C; and pyrrhotite 470 - 475°;ò for particles >90 /lm, the ignition values were: pyrite 395 - 400°C;ò violarite 430 - 435°C; pyrrhotite 540 - 545°C; and pentlandite 560 - 565°C.Using the data on the individual minerals it was possible to rationalise the differing degrees of reactivity of the concentrates. The role of the most reactive constituent in initiating the ignition reaction has also been discussed.Finally, the results of this work were found to compare. favourably with the behaviour ofthe concentrates in industrial and pilot-scale flash smelters.

Samples of the same coal measure overburden spoil were obtained from three different mine sites. Site A used a 27-m3 tub-mounted dragline, Site S used a front-end loader and truck combination, and Site C used a 6-m3 crawler-mounted dragline. The spoils were analyzed in the laboratory for the strength parameters using drained triaxial tests conducted on 150-mm diameter specimens. Regression analysis was utilized to determine the appropriate failure criterion for the strength data from each site. Spoil obtained from Site S yielded higher shear strengths than Sites A and C.

Based on two studies that were funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, the authors provide an overview of the benefits expected from mining deeper webs on United States longwalls. The first study, completed in November 1979, identified the limits and potential gains from taking deeper webs with presently available equipment. The second on-going study discusses the conceptual design and benefits of a future system for taking very deep webs.

"The adsorption of mixed cationic/anionic surfactants with different molar ratios onto quartz was investigated. The cationic surfactant used was dodecylamine bromide (DDA), and the anionic surfactant was sodium oleate (NaOL). The critical micelle concentration values for the individual surfactants and their corresponding mixtures were determined using a platinum plate. The adsorption mechanisms of mixed surfactants on quartz were studied using contact angle measurements, flotation tests and adsorption amount measurements. At alkaline condition, NaOL depresses DDA flotation of quartz without depressing the adsorption of DDA. The molar ratio of mixed surfactants is found to be a key factor in the orientation of alkyl chains and thereby the flotation response of quartz. A mixture of 1/2 or 1/3 DDA/NaOL forms on the surface of quartz when the concentration of NaOL is higher than that of DDA. The adsorption of the mixture decreases the wetting of quartz since the alkyl chains are in chaotically orientation with a conceivable number of head groups directing towards the solution phase. These results provide important insights into the adsorption of mixed surfactants onto quartz surface. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is known as an effective method of separating mineral particles on the basis of their surface chemistry, specifically their hydrophobicity. [1]. The hydrophobic particles will attach to the bubbles and rise to the top of the containing vessel to form a froth that flows over the lip of the vessel. The hydrophilic particles remain in the liquid [2]. In the process, surfactant is often used as collectors for surface modification in order to change the wetting properties of mineral particles. The primary long chain alkyl ammonium salts are the most widely used as collectors for the flotation of oxide minerals, such as quartz, muscovite, hematite, phosphate and feldspar [3, 4]. Adsorption mechanism of alkyl ammonium salts on oxide minerals has been extensively analyzed [5, 6]. Generally, the ammonium salts are adsorbed through electrostatic interaction of the polar group of the molecules with the surface of these minerals [7]. Despite many obvious advantages of the ammonium salts in low temperature resistance and hard water resisting, however, their unavoidable drawbacks, such as high sensitivity and poor selectivity for slimes, relatively high cost, have limited their applications [8]. In recent years, mixed surfactants have drawn much attention due to their superior physicochemical and surface properties than single surfactants [1, 9-11]. They have been used in many industrial processes such as dispersion/flocculation, flotation, detergent, corrosion inhibition, cosmetics, foods, paints, chemical mechanical polishing, enhanced oil recovery, and nanolithography [12]. Most of the mixed surfactants have synergistic advantage in reduction of the surface tension and critical micelle concentration (CMC); therefore, they exhibit spurious properties, like excellent surface/interfacial activities, and are less expensive than single mixed surfactant systems [13, 14]."

The flotation response of a Pb-Zn sulphide ore from the Rosh Pinah Mine (Namibia) was studied in the presence of inorganic depressants such as sodium cyanide and zinc sulphate. Poor flotation selective was observed in the rougher concentrate of the galena circuit despite the use of excessive amount of sodium cyanide. Batch flotation tests have shown that the use of cyanide alone is not efficient for the depression of sphalerite from the Rosh Pinah ore when milling is carried out according to the current plant particle size distribution. The use of both cyanide and zinc sulphate improved the selectivity between galena and sphalerite much better than cyanide alone. Flotation selectivity is limited by the mineralogical texture of the Rosh Pinah ore sample. Microscopic analysis has shown that the presence of sphalerite in the galena concentrate is also due to poor liberation between galena and sphalerite, especially in the middlings. Three novel dextrin polymers of varying functional group chemistry but similar molecular weight have been used to depress talc in single and mixed mineral studies. The mixed mineral system was a model sulphide ore consisting of talc, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. Adsorption isotherms for the three polymers on both valuable and gangue mineral phases were determined to give initial clues as to the ability of the polymers to depress talc. Flotation testing revealed a distinct hierarchy of effectiveness of the polymers in the depression of talc in the single mineral system (MP Dextrin > CM Dextrin > Dextrin TYM), reflecting the observed adsorption affinity and adsorbed amount of the polymers on talc. However, a different order of effectiveness was observed for talc depression in the mixed mineral system (CM Dextrin > MP Dextrin > Dextrin TYM). Competition between the valuable and gangue mineral phases for uptake of MP Dextrin is responsible for its observed decrease in efficiency in mixed mineral flotation. All three polymers were found to be reasonably selective in their action, although at high dosages the polymers began to affect the flotation of the valuable minerals.

Polymer dispersants, also known as grinding aids, are widely used to reduce the viscosity of mineral particle suspensions and to improve energy efficiency during fine grinding. In this study, the effect of polymer dispersant with different molecular structure on the suspension properties in the wet stirred media milling of limestone was studied. The stability of suspension was studied by combining rheological and zeta potential measurements. The PDI value of polymers corresponds to the width of the molecular weight distribution so that low PDI corresponds to narrow MW distribution and high PDI to the wide one. In this study, two traditionally fractionated polymer dispersants with high PDI (over 2) and one novel polymer dispersant with low PDI (1.2) has been tested. It was noticed that dispersants worked as electrosteric stabilizators and prevented the agglomeration of ground limestone particles. The uses of dispersants could increase solids concentration used in the grinding experiments and at the same time lower the particle size and specific energy consumption. The obtained particle sizes were about 1 µm regardless of which dispersant was used or the amount of it. The novel dispersant with low PDI reduced viscosity most when compared with the traditionally fractionated polymer dispersants. Results indicated that even higher solids concentrations can be used at the same amount of dispersant when the novel low PDI polymer dispersant is used. Alternatively, lower dosage of novel low PDI dispersant can be used compared to traditionally fractionated dispersants.

Worldwide TiO2is extracted from natural ilmenite, rutile, and anatase minerals via the sulphateand chloride processes. The sulphate process generates large volumes of less toxic wastes, whereas the chloride process, including the ilmenite-chloride process of DuPont, yields much lower volume of wastes, which are highly toxic and hazardous. The treatment and disposal of such hazardous chloride wastes is both expensive and difficult in terms of long-term monitoring. Besides the waste management and disposal, there is also a shortage of high-grade titanium dioxide minerals in nature, which consequently yields much larger tonnages of sulphate and chloride wastes. In the present investigation we report the results of an alternative titaniferous mineral beneficiation process based on soda ash roasting of minerals. Compared to the conventional processes for beneficiation of TiO2- ores, the alkali roasting of titaniferous offers several advantages including the zero process wastes. In the soda ash roasting process, the mineral is mixed with sodium carbonate and heated above 1023 K in air. The oxidative roasting of ores yields several complex alkali compounds, some of which produce a liquid mixture above 1123 K. In this paper, we have attempted to characterize the composition and physical chemistry of alkali-rich liquid phase. The phase equilibria in the Ti-(M:Fe)-Na-O system are evaluated and compared with the phases formed as a result of roasting reaction. The experimental results revealed that the composition of complex alkali liquid at the reaction interface plays an important role in determining the transport of O2-ions and decomposition of ilmenite. The roles of the crystal structure of mineral phases and their energetics are also emphasized in controlling their decomposition during alkali roasting. The presence of molten alkali in controlling the partitioning of water-soluble alkali salts and insoluble sodium titanate is also explained. This paper reports the results of the study of the influences of concentration and modulus of sodium potassium silicate solution (Na-K activator) and curing mode on the phase composition, mi-crostructure and strength development in the geopolymers prepared using Class F fly ash. X-ray dif-fraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and MAS NMR are utilized in this study. It shows that the compressive strength increases while sodium potassium silicate solution modulus increases, but when modulus exceeds 1.7, the compressive strength decreases, and it decreases markedly while modulus is greater than 2.0. The compressive strength improves with increase of sodium potassium silicate solution concentration. When the concentration is 36%, the compressive strength reaches the maximum. Elevated temperature can increase the strength of samples synthesized using sodium potassium silicate solution with 32% concentration and modulus 1.2. Compared to the strength of the sample cured at 50?, the strength of the samples cured at 65? and 80? are higher at 1 day and 3 days, but when cured at 80?, strength is smaller than that cured at 50? for 7 days. When temperature is too high, too long curing time will decrease the strength. Long precuring at room temperature before application of heat is beneficial for strength development, and there is about 10%~50% increase in strength of the samples cured at 1 day precuring and 2 days elevated temperature as compared to the strengths of the samples cured for 3 days at elevated temperature or cured for 28 days at room temperature. The main product of reaction in the geopolymeric material is amorphous alkali aluminosilicate gel.

The implementation of NAFTA in January of 1994 was expected to have small but beneficial effects for the Mexican economy, mostly through increased investment flows. Mexico's mining industry was especially likely to benefit, as mineral investment funds would be diverted to the now safer Mexico and away from similarly endowed but more risky Latin American mineral economies. The results of the past two years have shown that it is governments and macroeconomic factors that influence investment flows, rather than the fine-tuning of trade flows through so called "free-trade" agreements.

A number of gold processing plants in Western Australia have nickel in their ores, leading to significant levels of nickel on their loaded carbon. The presence of nickel during leaching, adsorption and elution'may have detrimental effects on cyanide consumption, carbon inventory requirements, stripping costs, electrowinning efficiencies and may contaminate the gold bullion.This paper discusses the competitive adsorption of gold and nickel cyanides onto activated carbon and investigates changes in solution parameters that may improve gold adsorption and/or inhibit nickel adsorotion.

"Laboratory batch flotation tests were carried out on fine (-20 µm) hematite to investigate the non-polar oil’s influences when sodium oleate, octyl hydroxamic acid, or oleyl hydroxamic acid were used as a collector. Batch flotation tests were performed with artificial mixed minerals (hematite:quartz = 1:1) under natural pH condition and kerosene was utilized as the model oil. The experimental results showed that kerosene emulsion behaved differently when used in conjunction with the three collectors. Kerosene helped improve the flotation when sodium oleate or oleyl hydroxamic acid was used as a collector. Nevertheless, it reduced concentrate weight yield, grade and recovery to a noticeable extent when octyl hydroxamic acid was used as a collector, especially at low dosages. In addition, single hematite batch flotation kinetics tests coupled with water recovery measurement were carried out to study the role of kerosene at different collector dosages. It was observed that water drainage and the resulting froth destabilization by kerosene was dominant at low collector dosages, especially in the flotation using octyl hydroxamic acid. At higher collector dosages, the water drainage and froth destabilization effect by kerosene was possibly counter-balanced by the higher hematite hydrophobicity and bubble surface tension gradient, which led to more stable froth layer.INTRODUCTION The minerals industry is facing a steady decline in ore grade, compounded by increasing complexity of mineral dissemination. As a result, the ore has to be ground sufficiently fine to have a suitable degree of mineral liberation, which produces large percentages of fine and ultrafine particles outside of optimal size range for ore dressing. Due to the unique characteristics of fine particles, i.e., small mass, high specific surface area, and problems such as increased solubility of complex minerals (Finkelstein, 1997; Finkelstein & Allison, 1976; Fornasiero & Ralston, 2005), high reagent consumption, fast surface oxidation in the case of sulfides (Collins & Read, 1971; Klassen & Mokrousov, 1963), severe particle entrainment (Subrahmanyam & Forssberg, 1988; Warren, 1984), low flotation rates (Glembotsky, 1953; Philippoff, 1952; Ye & Miller, 1988), slime coating (T. K. Mitchell et al., 2005; Parsonage, 1984), etc., flotation performance of these finely ground ores is very poor in terms of low concentrate grade and recovery."

The point load index is a simple, fast, and inexpensive method for determining rock strength and can be applied both in the field and in the laboratory. There are, however, some disadvantages and limitations to the method, and the test results can be affected by the person carrying out the test, the rock characteristics, or the test device. In this study we describe an investigation into how the point load index value is affected by the shape of the conical platens used in the test. Point load index tests were carried out using different devices fitted with conical platens of different spherical radii, and on a modified device which circumvented the limitations/disadvantages. It was seen that the point load index value increased as the platen radius increased, as expected. In the case of testing using non-standard conical platens, an equation is proposed to normalize the point load index value with respect to the standard spherical radius value.

"The global demand for the copper metal is continuously increasing however, the high-grade copper ore deposits are constantly depleting. As a result, ore bodies with complex mineralogy characteristics and rich in arsenic-copper bearing minerals are increasingly processed. Arsenic-copper sulphides such as enargite can represent a significant amount of arsenic in concentrate, which causes high financial penalties by smelters. On the other hand, arsenic (As) is a highly toxic inorganic pollutant, which causes human health and environmental problems. Recent research studies have demonstrated promising results showing the possibility of separating arsenic-copper sulphides from copper sulphides using controlled pulp potential (Eh) flotation at laboratory scale. However, the selective removal of arsenic-copper minerals in real ore systems is not well understood. Two ore samples were selected from the Tampakan copper-gold deposit located in the Philippines named the HAS (high arsenic sample) and the LAS (low arsenic sample) samples and the mineralogical analyses were performed on both samples. The floatability of enargite in a batch flotation system under controlled pulp potential conditions was investigated for the HAS and the LAS samples. It was observed that it is possible to selectively separate enargite from other copper minerals after reducing the pulp potential to about -200 mV SHE at pH 11 in the LAS sample. However, no separation between enargite and other copper minerals was observed at a reducing potential for the HAS sample. Mineralogical analyses and surface chemistry studies were undertaken for both samples to find out the reasons for different observations. This study has an important implication in sulphide flotation to achieve sustainable development in the utilisation of arsenic-copper mineral resources. INTRODUCTIONAs the demand for copper is increasing, the extraction and development of resources including complex deposits is becoming necessary. These complex deposits often have issues such as: lower grade ores, floatable non-sulphide gangue, very fine-grained ore and therefore poor liberation and significant regrinding, mixed copper mineralogy, complicated galvanic interactions, economic levels of gold and silver, and high levels of impurities such as arsenic. There is currently no established methodology for separating arsenic-bearing copper minerals from other copper sulphide minerals by flotation. The possibility of separating arsenic-copper sulphides from other copper minerals by controlling the potential of the flotation pulp has been shown in previous studies. However most of these studies were conducted on single mineral systems and the selective removal of arsenic-copper minerals in complex ore systems is not well understood. The flotation behaviour of arsenic-bearing minerals within complex ores differs significantly from that of pure mineral systems due to the effects of mineralogical composition, the degree of liberation, and the surface oxidation. The understanding and manipulation of these effects can lead to improvements in the selective flotation recovery of arsenic-bearing species from complex ore systems."

This paper presents the second of a two part study on density stratification in a laboratory batch jig. The first study, reported elsewhere, investigated the effect of operating conditions on the stratification profile achieved at equilibrium. The study reported in this paper investigated their effect on the kinetics of density stratification under 18 different sets of operating conditions - five for binary systems with different particle densities; and 13 for a ternary system with different configurations of the jig cycle. Although the study was academic in nature (it involved simple systems of 8 mm glass beads) it has a number of practical implications. It found that the most influential operating variables affecting stratification kinetics are the amplitude of water displacement, the pulsion hold time, and, to a lesser extent, the pulsion time. It also found that reasonable rates of stratification can be expected in systems with density differences as low as 237 kg/m3 but below this the kinetics deteriorate significantly. The two studies together suggest that, within a broad range of operating conditions, the equilibrium stratification profile is independent of control variables and it is the control of stratification kinetics that has the primary influence on the quality of density separations in a jig.
