"The first printed report on Canada's coal resources was published in Paris in 1672(1. Written by Nicholas Denys, then Governor for France of Isle Royale (Cape Breton Island), the report dealt exclusively with the coal of the Atlantic region because little or nothing was known about the interior of North America. Clearly, also, he wrote about a resource of which much was known among the military and early settlers of that day. This early knowledge is not surprising because the presence of coal is clearly displayed in the coastal cliffs of Cape Breton as it was also, at a later date, to the first arrivals on Vancouver Island.An example of early use was that of the French garrison at Fort Louisburg in the first half of the 1700s. Still earlier, in 1643, Governor Winthrop of New England reported the receipt of a small ship load of coal from New Brunswick (2). Despite this early knowledge there was no significant development of coal mines until the 1800s. This had to await the ending of wars between the French and British factions and the growth of population. Basically, also, its development awaited the beginning of the Industrial Age. Organized coal mining began in Canada in 1825 with the formation of the General Mining Association. This British firm was the creation of a group of London jewellers which had been granted royal rights, by the British crown, to all minerals in Acadia (substantially the present Maritime Provinces). The Association took over a number of existing small mines and opened up larger operations in the Sydney coal field. Subsequently, it expanded to the mainland Nova Scotia fields at Stellarton and Springhill. The Association continued in existence as the major coal producer in Canada until 1899 when it sold its properties to the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Company, Limited (3). This Montreal-based firm managed the coal mines as a major Canadian producer of coal until 1968 when financial problems led to the expropriation of the mines by the Government of Canada. The federal government established the Cape Breton Development Corporation to operate the larger mines on Cape Breton Island. This Crown corporation continues to be a .major producer of coal in Canada."

A brief review is given of the history of the Colliery to date together with the reasons for the development of an additional seam.Investigations into the quality of the coal ami its suitability for the production of metallurgical coke and determination of the economic mining limits and coal reserves are discussed. The commencement of mining operations and the inter-seamarrangements necessary for the disposal of coal won are described with the stages in the opening out of the seam itself and the reasons for the installation of a 48-in. trunk conveyor belt. Choke and manning of face equipment are considered and also the work of secondary development and pillar extraction.It is concluded that with modern face equipment and conveyor belt lines, concentrated mining followed by immediate extraction of pillars is practicable and is giving excellent results at Burwood Colliery.INTRODUCTIONBurwood Colliery, the total holding of which now comprises some 3,140 acres of land and 1,450 acres of sea leases, has mined the Borehole Seam since 1883. The early work took place from Nos. 1 and 2 shafts at Glenrock Lagoon and later on at Nos. 3 and 4 shafts at Whitebridge to which the centre of operations shifted in 1893, shaft sinking at this latter area having commenced in 1888.As all the early operations were confined to the Borehole Seam, reserves of coal on this horizon had been considerably reduced by the mid 1930's, so a cross measure drift was driven to the Victoria Tunnel Seam which is about 300 ft. above the Borehole Seam, and fully mechanized coal winning commenced from the second seam in 1938. The earliest discovery and mining of coal in the northern area of the Greta Coal Measures at Anvil Creek in 1862 was by William Farthing, however, some official records attribute the discovery to Thomas Frost in 1864. Frost's discovery was examined by William Keen, government examiner of coalfields, and further prospecting was carried out. This was followed by the pioneering work of C S Wilkinson, government geologist in 1884. Subsequently in 1886 C S Wilkinson entrusted a detailed survey of the coalfield to the then geological surveyor, T W Edgeworth David.The outcrop of the Greta Coal Measures around the Lochinvar dome was mapped by Edgeworth David and as soon as he reported his discovery, the Department of Mines reserved in the interests of coal mining an area of 23700 acres, which extended between what became the South Greta and Abermain No I Collieries.

The concept of an in stream analysis probe was developed at The Zinc Corporation (now Z.C. Mines) in the late 1960's and commercialised quite rapidly, by Phillips and then AMDEL, as an alternative to the established centralised systems (Courier, etc.). The developments which have taken place since that time are reviewed and current procedures and performance are described. An audit of the system, recently undertaken by AMDEL, has highlighted areas where improvements can be made. In 1988 the ISA system will become an integral part of a substantially upgraded process control system.

This paper contains an outline of the history of the Sullivan mine, now owned and operated by the Consolidated Mining & Smelting Company of Canada, Ltd.; some account of the various methods by which the ore has been treated in efforts to solve the metallurgical problems which its complex character presents, and, finally, to give, as concisely as possible, an outline of the present mining and metallurgical practice along with a description of the mining and milling plant at Kimberley and the smelter and refineries at Trail, in British Columbia. EARLY HISTORY In May, 1892, Pat Sullivan, John Cleaver and Mike Holland left the Coeur d'Alene country, in the State of Idaho, to seek their fortunes in the Kootenay lake district in British Columbia. They were aided in their venture by James Cronin, afterwards locator and owner of the St. Eugene mine at Moyie. Two months later the party broke up, Sullivan and Cleaver crossing the mountains from Crawford bay on Kootenay lake to the head waters of the St. Mary's river, the course of which they followed down to Fort Steele. Here they found a good deal of excitement about the North Star mine, and, joined by "Ed." Smith, who was familiar with this part of the country, they determined to return and prospect in its vicinity.

With the employment of a system of ore pillars to support the hanging wall during the mining operations at the North Mine, it was found that, when the stopes were worked out and the pillars remained intact, the main footwall drives developed an undulating longitudinal section due to the shrinkage of the filling in the worked out stopes.These depressions collected water, which made the footwall drives very wet under foot, and everitually worked its way into the pillar workings and the levels below.Water was also finding its way into the shafts because of the silting-up of the level drainage systems and, as both the shafts are down-cast, this tended to increase the humidity of the air entering the mine.To overcome these troubles it was decided to try a system of siphons as a method of subsidiary drainage.SYSTEM AT PRESENT IN USE.All drainage water is collected as near to its source as possible, run into a sump in an adjacent low lying part of the level, and continuously removed from these sumps by a siphon system.Each level has its own system. Oriel Resources has with the support of SRK (Cardiff) and DRA and Mintek (South Africa) carried our a Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) to recover high grade chrome ore from its Voskhod deposit very close to Chromtau that is near to Aktobe in Kazakhstan. Voskhod is a large podiform ore body that contains nearly 20million tons of chromite grading about 48% Cr2O3 and with a Cr/Fe ratio of over 3/1. Selected bore hole core samples were obtained from the confirmation drilling programme during the DFS phase of the project in 2005 for pilot plant test work to design the mineral beneficiation plant. The chrome ore is characterised by four main types, namely high grade lumpy and chip sized ore, high-grade fine ore, lower grade (subordinate) lumpy ore and lower grade fine ore. Gravity separation tests carried out by Mintek showed that the large density difference between the high grade (at over 3.7t/m3) and lower grade ore (at less than 2.97t/m3 ) should ensure very good separation in the DMS drum and DMS cyclone stages resulting in high recoveries of Cr2O3 - rich chromite ore products. Very high chrome ore grades of up to 64% Cr2O3 and Cr/Fe ratios of 4 to 1 were obtained at an 80% mass yield from selected samples of lumpy and chip ore size fractions. The overall predicted recovery from the design work on the mine and plant is expected to be closer to about 70% of the ROM (Run of Mine) feed. DRA has completed the design of the mineral processing plant to recover about 900 kt/a of chrome ore from the 1.3 Mt/a of ROM feed. The plant has been sized to handle up to 1.5 Mt/a and will also be able to address the variability in ore feed as different regions in the deposit are mined. The lumpy high-grade product and the chips size fraction is expected to grade around 48% Cr2O3 and the fine concentrate between 56 and 58%Cr2O3 The ratio of products is expected to be about 70, 15 and 15 percent respectively but will vary to some extent during the expected 20 year life of the mining operation based on including the associated adjacent Karaagash deposit together with the Voskhod deposit. The prediction of the product split from the processing plant depends on many factors such as the geology, mineralogy, mining, handling and metallurgical processing. An overall process flow model has been developed that covers the ROM ore, the various types of chrome ore feed to the mineral beneficiation plant, the projected products and the subsequent smelting of the chromite ores to produce High Carbon Ferrochromium. The model allows the optimisation of the quality of the chrome ore in terms of Cr2O3 content, Cr/Fe ratio and recovery to be studied. This information can also be evaluated in terms of the economic requirements for smelting High Carbon Ferrochromium (HCFeCr) at a given location. Oriel is planning to supply chrome ore to Ferrochrome plants mostly in China and Russia. The use of the model will assist to maximise the value of the Voskhod project to its owners and also assist the users of the chrome ore in selecting the appropriate supply quality to meet their needs for a given smelter operation. The smelting of high grade Voskhod ore requires a limited addition of about 5 to 7% quartz to flux the MgO and Al2O3 and about 25% coke as a reducing agent to produce an alloy containing from about 65 to 74%chromium depending on the Cr/Fe ratio.

Roxgold was a small exploration company when it discovered the Zone 55 orebody at the Yaramoko project in Burkina Faso in 2010. Since this time, it has actively progressed the project with the completion of a preliminary economic assessment in 2013, a feasibility study in early 2014 and obtained full permitting for construction in January 2015. With no other underground gold mine in Burkina Faso, developing a modern and productive modern gold mine in West Africa was considered a significant challenge as Roxgold moved from explorer to producer.To facilitate this development, Roxgold engaged an international underground mining contractor to partner this development. This has enabled Roxgold to successfully develop the mine over a relatively short time frame with construction commencing in April 2015, first gold being poured in May 2016 and commercial production being achieved in October 2016.This paper discusses key elements of the project development and highlights some of the challenges faced with operating in a remote poorly developed area with a limited mining culture. In February 2001, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) commissioned its first full-scale ultra fine grinding (UFG) plant to supplement existing roaster concentrate treatment capacity. This process involves the fine grinding of refractory pyritic concentrate to 10µm, followed by direct cyanide leaching for the recovery of gold. By this means gold is economically extracted from the concentrate without the need to first oxidise the host pyrite. This paper details the history of the project from initial laboratory testwork comparing possible treatment options, to current performance of the 12 tph plant. This includes the cost comparison of the major treatment options, the laboratory and pilot scale UFG performance, the UFG mill selection, cyanide leaching of UFG product, commissioning and plant performance to date.

"The formation of ultrafine ferrite by strain induced transformation is assessed using rolling and hot torsion experiments. These experiments are used to examine the impact of thermomechanical processing conditions and steel chemistry on strain induced austenite to ferrite transformation and the formation of ultrafine ferrite. The critical strain for dynamic strain induced transformation increased with increasing carbon equivalence, deformation temperature and austenite grain size. The deformation structure in the austenite grains changes with the thermomechanical processing conditions.Drawing on these results and the current literature, the important factors for the production of ultrafine ferrite are described and a mechanism proposed."

Entrapments are a huge risk in underground mines. This happens when miners (or any other persons who have entered underground) survive the initial event of an accident, become trapped or lost in unknown and life-threatening locations after evacuation, and remain unaccounted for. At this point, every second counts, and emergency response is highly desired for any chances of saving survivors. The survival chances of the missing persons depend on how quickly they can be located. Rescue teams are often deployed to search for the missing persons underground. However, the rescue teams are forced to search in random and presumed areas of the mine. This is due to the unavailability of information pertaining to the whereabouts of the missing persons. Not only the provision of accurate locations, but various other types of information such as post-accident two-way communication can enhance the survival chances of the missing persons. This information can be provided by a fit-for-purpose missing person locator system. A wide variety of missing person locator systems are already commercially available, some are in testing phases and others in prototype and development phases. This includes tracking, tracing, location detectors and post-accident two-way communication systems. These systems have unique functionalities, capabilities and limitations; making it difficult for mines to select the most effective, applicable and suitable system specific to their mine. In this study, the user requirements for a fit-for-purpose missing person locator system were developed. The purpose of the user requirements was to provide a guideline to facilitate the system selection process. The user requirements can also be used as a tool to measure and evaluate the performance of the selected missing person locator system. The user requirements were also used to predict the success of the selected system under different missing person incident scenarios. The development of the user requirements showed a potential for many other benefits for missing person locator systems.

At Cameco Corporations' Cigar Lake Project, large excavations are developed on the 480 Level and 500 Level must remain stable for at least 15 years to host underground processing infrastructure. Following the successful dewatering of the mine in October 2009, subsequent internal rockmechanics investigations augmented by third party technical investigations; determined that to keep the back of the Water Flush Crusher/Run-of-Mine (WFC/ROMs) excavation stable; required a rehabilitation strategy to mitigate deterioration/deformation of the WFC walls and intersection pillars. The mechanism of failure propagating the movement of the excavation walls is understood to be controlled by the presence of a dominant E-W striking and steeply dipping foliation within a relatively weak and mildly altered rockmass sub-parallel in strike with 14 meters high walls and an intersection span approaching 15 meters. The application of open and resourceful communications between site mining engineers, geologists, contract mining staff, construction management experts, corporate mining and civil engineers, and third party technical experts resulted in a multi-faceted short-term ground support strategy consisting of standard bolting and screening, deep-seated modified-strand cable bolts coupled with heavy gauge mesh straps, rockmass reconditioning using low-pressure grout injection, and horizontal cable-lacing for the intersection pillars applied in lifts using a top-down methodology. The intention of the short-term strategy was to stabilize the excavation so that a long-term structural steel support installation - consisting of composite concrete walls, and arch support applied to the side walls and crown of the back - could be constructed safely. This paper summarizes the evolution of the short and long-term ground support strategy and criteria for the WFC/ROMs excavation developed using elements of civil, mining and hydrogeologic design.

Remapping of the Burdekin Basin has resulted in subdivision of the three interfingering basin-wide megafacies previously recognised in the Early to Middle Devonian Fanning River Group. Eleven carbonate and siliciclastic facies are now identified within the three megafacies, representing coastal plain, shoreline, nearshore, and shallow marine shelf depositional environments. The facies reflect two phases of a major transgression. An initial phase, in the Early Devonian, was confined to the far north of the basin, whereas a second, main phase, resulted in the encroachment of the sea from the east or southeast in the Middle Devonian.The proposed depositional model begins with the drowning of a coastal plain and the transgression of shoreline and nearshore facies between granitic and metamorphic headlands and/or islands. This was followed by the deposition of a patch reef and fringing reef complex including stromatoporoid and coral bioherms, biostromes, and oncolitic, crinoidal, and brachiopod-dominated banks/shoals, together with foreslopes and submarine channels, carbonate rubble deposits and terrigenous sediments. Sedimentation during the peak of the transgression was dominated by sheltered carbonate shelf facies, the maximum, flooding surface being recognisable across most of the Burdekin Basin. Progradation of muddy and sandy nearshore bay and shoreline facies soon followed, terminating carbonate deposition.

Mining operations generate Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) that poses a significant threat to the natural environment. AMD treatment using Ca(OH)2 leads to the precipitation of a sludge dominated by a mixture of ferri-oxyhydroxides. This sludge has poor dewatering tendencies and is deposited in landfills with potential for metal remobilization. This study investigated the dewatering behaviour of a precipitate formed during elevated temperature treatment of a primary, pre-settled sludge from the neutralisation of aqueous acidic Fe2(SO4)3 and Ca(OH)2 solutions in an MSMPR reactor. The resulting treated precipitates were analysed for micro-properties, with results showing that an increase in the secondary reactor temperature from 25 °C up to 50 °C led to an increase in mean particle size, a decrease in the number of particles and improved dewatering behaviour at a ferric concentration of 300 mg/L. This was ascribed to the attainment of a circum-neutral surface charge that favoured agglomeration and a change in micro and nano-structure that allowed for better water passage.

The Bureau de Recherches Geologiques et Minieres (BRGM) (a French Government-sponsored geological and mining agency), through international experience gained over many years, has become very skilled in alluvial prospection, particularly for diamonds. The research laboratories within the BRGM have also been active in creating new mineral processing equipment, some of which is directly applicable to such prospection. One such development, the mobile prospection unit, is described and its application in mineral exploration is demonstrated by a consideration of the diamond search in Australia and the general exploration of the Massif Armoricain (France). Because this latter study was fundamental in the development of the concept of 'mineral-geochemistry', and its application in mineral exploration, it is also briefly described.
